VASILY PETRENKO’S MAHLER MATINEE CONCERT
An unmissable opportunity to hear Mahler’s monumental choral symphonies at the one-and-only Royal Albert Hall, beginning with the most epic of them all – the composer’s eighth. Even by Mahler’s standards, his ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ is a work of immense proportions. The RPO and maestro Vasily Petrenko are joined on stage by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, eight soloists, four choruses, two children’s choirs, and an organ, for what promises to be a titanic performance of this rarely heard masterpiece.

CAPTIVATING CLASSICS Join conductor Alpesh Chauhan and 2019 Hastings International Piano winner, Fumiya Koido (pictured), for a virtuosic performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto. Written with his beloved Clara in mind and taking eight years to write, this was the composer’s only concerto written for piano, yet is widely regarded as one of the finest. Also featuring Mendelssohn’s Tenth String Symphony; precociously written when the composer was just a young teenager, as well as Beethoven’s lesser performed, yet always delightful, Fourth Symphony.

TCHAIKOVSKY REVEALED Renowned New Zealander conductor, Gemma New (pictured), brings us two great masterpieces from one of the most compelling composers of all time – Tchaikovsky. Impressive Italian pianist, Beatrice Rana, joins the Orchestra to perform one of the most instantly recognisable piano concertos of all time, Tchaikovsky’s First; brimming full with passion, from its triumphant opening chords to its rapturous finale. Also featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4; a revealing, soul-bearing work, giving a unique insight into the composer’s sensitive state of mind at the time of writing.

Also featuring Mozart’s graceful Third Violin Concerto, performed here by Hungarian violinist Barnabas Kelemen.

ROMANTIC FAVOURITES Conductor Antony Hermus opens tonight’s concert with Grieg’s ‘Peer Gynt’ Suite No.1 – featuring some of the most memorable melodies ever written, including Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King – and closes with Sibelius’ Symphony No.2. The Orchestra warmly welcomes back Beatrice Rana (pictured) for an irresistable rendition of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto; the second movement of which you may well recognise, having become immortalised as the soundtrack to David Lean’s classic film, Brief Encounter (as well as in Eric Carmen’s pop hit, All By Myself).
