TUE 4 FEB 2020

7.30PM ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL

THE PLANETS Eminent interpreter of the English repertoire, conductor Mark Wigglesworth, takes the helm for two English gems: Walton’s bustling Portsmouth Point Overture and Holst’s awe-inspiring The Planets, as well as Liszt’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No.2, performed by world-renowned pianist, Khatia Buniatishvili (pictured). A landmark of English Romanticism, Holst’s breath-taking suite explores the contrasting astrological qualities of the Solar System, includes the much-loved movements ‘Mars’ and ‘Jupiter’, and never fails to capture the wonder we project onto the night’s sky. Featuring the resplendent Holst Singers.

ORCHESTRAL VALENTINES SELLING FAST!

Join conductor Paul Bateman and presenter Petroc Trelawny for this delightful Valentine’s concert, celebrating some of the most romantic pieces of music ever written from the worlds of film, opera and classical music. Sit back, relax and revel in well-known themes from: Gone with the Wind, Doctor Zhivago, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Out of Africa, as well as much-loved classics by Mascagni, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Verdi, Massenet and more. Also featuring the sublimely soulful Adagio from Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto (as heard throughout David Lean’s 1945 classic film, Brief Encounter), with outstanding pianist, Clare Hammond.

TUE 10 MAR 2020

7.30PM ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL

THE RITE OF SPRING Three Russian masterworks, including Borodin’s Russian folk inspired Overture from his Prince Igor opera, and one of the most popular concertos of the repertoire, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major – performed here with fire and ferocity by former RPO Artist-in-Residence, violinist Esther Yoo (pictured) – are brought to you tonight by seasoned conductor, Thierry Fischer. Stravinsky’s revolutionary work, The Rite of Spring, shattered tradition, upended conventional settings and, at its 1913 premiere, caused a stir that brought on a near-riot launching Stravinsky to fame – and notoriety.

FRI 3 APR 2020

7.30PM ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL

PROKOFIEV’S FIFTH Join the Orchestra’s Music Director Designate (from August 2020), Vasily Petrenko, for a host of inspiring masterpieces, including Britten’s evocative Four Sea Interludes from his Peter Grimes opera, as well as classical favourite, Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, performed here by the critically acclaimed cellist, Alexey Stadler (pictured). Despite being composed against the backdrop of World War II, Prokofiev’s powerful Symphony No.5 is a work of exuberance and energy which, in the composer’s words, provided ‘a hymn to free and happy Man’.

WED 8 APR 2020

PASTORAL DREAMS Weber’s fantastical Oberon Overture opens tonight’s concert with conductor Long Yu, setting a scintillating scene before Karl Goldmark’s emotive Violin Concerto No.1, performed here by the accomplished violinist, Ning Feng (pictured). Written as a retreat from the modernity of nineteenth-century Europe, and tinged with nostalgia for a countryside that nurtured the composer’s creative passions, Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, ‘Pastoral’, is full of frolicsome melodies that dance freely throughout, until the stormy penultimate movement, which passes with a glorious wave of relief in the Symphony’s climax.

THU 16 APR 2020

7.30PM CADOGAN HALL

A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY Conductor Sascha Goetzel invites you on a voyage of discovery across distinct lands, including the untempered Scottish seascape of Mendelssohn’s sweeping Hebrides Overture and, in Rodrigo’s iconic Concierto de Aranjuez – performed here by rising star classical guitarist, Sean Shibe (pictured) – the flamboyant flavours of Spanish Romanticism. Rimsky-Korsakov’s spellbinding Scheherazade, the much-loved reinterpretation of the classic legend of ‘One Thousand and One Arabian Nights’, ends this evening’s programme with its shimmering strings and enticing woodwind, revealing hope for the heroine’s ambitious escape.

SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE Love, life and longing are tonight’s themes as the great British conductor, Sir Andrew Davis, brings some of the greatest works of the Romantic imagination to life, including Elgar’s charming In the South (Alassio), and Strauss’ heart-bursting meditations Four Last Songs, featuring soprano Siobhan Stagg (pictured). Closing the concert is Berlioz’s gripping Symphonie Fantastique – a colossal work, revolved around the idea of an intense, idealised and unrequited love, which spirals inwards in the final movement towards a passionate outcry, blending dreams and reality.

MUSICAL REFLECTIONS A merry excursion through Berlioz’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing – Béatrice et Bénédict Overture – opens tonight’s concert, before the young and dynamic cellist, Pablo Ferrández (pictured), performs Shostakovich’s compelling Cello Concerto No.1. Bringing a triumphant conclusion to the concert – and to the Orchestra’s 2019–20 Season – is Mussorgsky’s mighty Pictures at an Exhibition. It’s no wonder that this deep, reflective and evocative series of musical portraits, commemorating the artworks of a lost friend with inspired intensity and sensitivity, remains a concert hall favourite – utterly unmissable.
