Stunning first edition Fantasia book, signed by Disney during his visit to Buenos Aires
498. Walt Disney Signed Book. Signed book: Walt Disney’s Fantasia by Deems Taylor. First edition. NY: Simon and Schuster, 1940. Hardcover with dust jacket, 10 x 13, 158 pages. Prominently signed and inscribed on the title page in beautiful blue fountain pen, “To Robert Frazere, from Walt Disney, B.A. 1941.” Autographic condition: very good to fine, with scattered light foxing to the signed page. Book condition: VG-/VG, with moderate overall foxing (primarily to board extremities and endpapers), loose hinges, fraying to spine ends and staining to spine cloth, minor nicks and creasing to dust jacket edges, and a price-clipped front jacket flap.
Disney was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1941 as part of a South American ‘goodwill tour’ sponsored by the government of the United States. Following the tour, Disney produced the films Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros, which were well received by critics and audiences alike. Starting Bid $300

500. Elias Disney Document Signed. Father (1859–1941) of Roy and Walt Disney. Partly-printed DS, one page, 8 x 3.25, February 5, 1917. Promissory note, in part: “Ninety Days after which I promise to pay to the order of The O-Zell Company Three Hundred Dollars at Chicago, Ills.” Signed at the conclusion by Elias Disney. In fine condition. Originally from the estate of Ruth Disney Beecher, Walt’s sister and the youngest child of Elias and Flora Disney. Walt’s father Elias Disney began investing in the O-Zell Company in 1912, and eventually moved back to Chicago to work for them in 1917. Originally, the O-Zell Company was a jelly-canning factory that also bottled apple juice; Elias planned to convert it to producing and bottling soft drinks. Walt Disney worked at the O-Zell factory before joining the Red Cross Ambulance Corps in World War I. The autograph of the Disney family patriarch is far rarer than that of his son. Starting Bid $200

from Plane Crazy. (Walt Disney Studios, 1928) Original production drawing featuring Mickey Mouse from Plane Crazy, showing the wide-eyed mouse in his plane’s cockpit. Accomplished in graphite on untrimmed 12 x 9.5 animation paper, marked “346” in the lower right. Image measures 1.75 x 1.5. In fine condition. Plane Crazy was extremely significant in the history of animation, as it marked the creation of Mickey Mouse. The short was codirected by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, with Iwerks serving as the main animator. Plane Crazy was a silent film and given a test screening to a theater audience, but failed to pick up a distributor; later in 1928 Disney released Steamboat Willie as a very successful sound cartoon, which is generally considered Mickey’s debut despite being made after Plane Crazy. This scene, which is highlighted by a hand-painted Eyvind Earle master background, who signed in the lower right corner in blue paint, shows Prince Philip only moments after surviving his epic battle with the evil Maleficent in her enormous black dragon form, being led by the three good fairies—Flora, Fauna and Merryweather—up the castle staircase and to the bedroom of the sleeping Princess Aurora. While the cels themselves are exceptionally bright, the stunning Earle background takes center stage with its impressive attention to detail, namely with its focus to texture and lighting. The images measure 5 x 5.75 (Philip) and 4.25 x .75 (Fauna, Flora, and Merryweather and their sparkling special effects), and the background measures a remarkable 28 x 11.25. The cels have been trimmed to image and applied to a vivid hand-painted production master pan background attributed to Eyvind Earle and his staff that is gorgeously rendered, with impressive detail and color given to all aspects of the woods. The scene depicts the sorceress in an exquisite full-length pose with scepter and flowing cloak as she emerges from the interior of her gargantuan castle. The cel has been trimmed to image and applied to a vivid hand-painted production master pan background attributed to Eyvind Earle and his staff. Maleficent measures 10.75 x 7.75, with overall dimensions of 30 x 12.5; the background is removably corner-mounted to an overall size of 35.5 x 18.25. In fine condition.
Disney artist Eyvind Earle was Sleeping Beauty’s production designer, and Disney gave him a significant amount of freedom in designing the settings and selecting colors for the film. A completely painted Earle background is extremely rare as his time as a background painter was very limited. His stylistic influence is readily apparent throughout this feature film referred to by Walt Disney as the ‘height of color.’ Starting Bid $1500

Earle imbues the scene with a vivid and dreamlike quality, contrasting the transition from forest to open space with a brilliant light and dark contrast. The central coach, with its trumpeting riders and galloping horses, lends soul and life to the scene, as does the high setting sun placed directly above the mountainous faraway castle. The lushness of the painting is likewise not to be ignored, with Earle, as he is wont to do, adding an array of his trademark trees and bushes to fill out the scene into a complete and engrossing fairy tale vista.
