1 Königsberg Cathedral Today, the majestic cathedral is a symbol of Kaliningrad, a historical and cultural monument of the Middle Ages; it is an organ and music hall. Before the reformation of the 16th century, it was the main Catholic cathedral of the city, and later, the main Lutheran cathedral of the province. sobor-kaliningrad.ru
The main marine museum of the country has a wide collection of museum water crafts: there are Vityaz and Kosmonavt Victor Patsaev research vessels, a medium catching trawler, as well as a combatant submarine B-413 of Tango class moored near the main building. There are exhibits of amber collections, the most ancient paleontological samples, mollusk shells, and the history of navigation represented in the halls of the main building. Nearby, there are aquariums with the tropic fish which impress the museum’s visitors by their incredible coloring, and the cat sharks are looking at you with their oceanic eyes out of a special ‘small island’ of the marine life. The museum complex includes the King’s and Friedrichsburg Gates.

and the nests of the storks living on the roof for about 100 years. Friedland received its town rights in 1335 and became famous during the Napoleonic wars. In 1807, a battle between Russian-Prussian troops and the French army took place.
4 Zheleznodorozhny Gerdauen The village has preserved an atmosphere of an ancient town with its narrow stone streets and a castle on a hill, old frame-build houses of the 14th century in the very centre of the city, and Kinderhof-Gerdauen brewery.

6 Romincka Forest Romincka Forest is an old forest located on the embankment of the most ancient Vistytis kettle lake, along the waters of which a border of Russia and Lithuania lies. There are traces of the rich history scattered over the place on the background of the wilderness: Protestant medieval churches, Chistiye Prudy, Kalinino, and Nevskoe; survived bridges and viaducts over the Krasnaya River (Rominta), a huge viaduct in Tokarevka Village, and the most beautiful among them is Oleniy Bridge near the ruins of the hunting castle of the Emperor Wilhelm II and the Chapel of St. Hubert. www.wystynez.ru
Five thousand years ago, winds and water currents of the Baltic Sea have formed a sand stripe separating the lagoon and the sea. The narrowest part of the Spit is 400 meters wide, and the widest one is 3.5 km, the overall length is 98 km. Since 1987, the Curonian Spit is considered to be a national park, and in 2000, it was included in the list of the world heritage of UNESCO. The unique combination of wind, fresh and salt water, ‘walking’ sand-dunes and ‘dancing’ forest have made it a place of recumbence for the citizens of Kaliningrad and the Region’s guests for whom there were organized sightseeing platforms and access to the wide beaches. For those who are fascinated with natural science, there is a museum complex and a permanent study area of ornithological observatory of Fringilla Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Science and many other things. www.park-kosa.ru
8 Svetlogorsk Raushen Svetlogorsk, the former Raushen, is a traditional resort town with one and a half century history. In its quite and shadowy streets, even the most restless guest wants to walk unhurriedly feasting his or her eyes on the townscape. Svetlogorsk is located very close to the sea. Its beach slopes of 40 meters wide and welldeveloped promenade have features of unique individuality. The city has a large net of recreation centers and health camps which is typical for a small European resort town. svetlogorsk-tourism.ru

9 Chernyakhovsk Insterburg The Chernyakhovsk history starts from the foundation of Insterburg Castle in 1336. Many times the Castle was visited by and was a residence for such famous people as Earl of Derby, King of England Henry IV (in 1390), Marcgrave George Frideric (in 1583), Prince Elector John Sigismund (in 1612), Queen of Sweden Maria Eleonora (in 1643), and many other historical figures.
The city had been developing simultaneously with the castle, and won the fame of horse ‘Mecca of Europe’. Since 1995, Chernyakhovsk continued the tradition with its horse tournaments. In 1936, the first trolley bus in East Prussia departed there, and it was also here where zip-fastener was invented.
Königsberg’s system of defensive outline and its defensive belt are the unique Russian fortification monuments. The complex includes 15 big forts and 2 inter fort defenses at the exit of the city, there is Crown Prince Barrack, 7 city gates, bastion and ravelins, as well as two big towers (Tower of Don and Wrangel Tower) on the bank of Verkhnee Lake.
Insterburg was a city of architects (Hans Scharoun, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and Maximilian Schwedler). And it has preserved its unique landscape and coloring up to the present days. Thanks to the activity of the Dom-ZAMOK Fund (since 1997), the Insterburg Castle is the place in the Kaliningrad Region where one can find a real medieval theatre, fire show, castle caves, as well as artist’s and craftsman’s studios.

The Polessky District has become popular thanks to its extremely complicated wastewater disposal system, as part of the district’s territory located below sea level. That’s why it was already in the 17th century when the first hydraulic works were performed there, and a complicated net of channels, dikes, and earthworks has been formed. Besides that, the local rivers have unusually heavy current, and there are a lot of small islands in the Deyma River’s entry. Popularly, the place is called ‘New Holland’. The unique ecosystem seems to be created for ecological and educational tourism!
There is a net of guest houses on the territory of the district, in which they organize family holidays, travels along rivers and channels, and assist in fishing and hunting. There are several water routes; the ‘freshest’ one is ‘Rybachy – Polessk – Lesnoe’. A hydrofoil speedboat will take you right to the Curonian Spit.
Holiday cruiser will take you to the picturesque places of the district where you can enjoy the virgin nature; and the bicycle and bidarka routes will check your ability to enjoy the rebellious, but rather friendly, nature of Polessky District channels and the Deyma River.

The Dohna Tower The knight tower Der Dohna located by the Verkhny pond and protecting the process of the water going down to the moat is a wonderful example of fortification architecture, especially together with the Rossgarten Gates which is the perfectly preserved inner defensive ring of Königsberg. Today, there is the Amber Museum located in the tower where the unique pieces of the Baltic semi-precious stone are collected, here you can see the dioramas of the ancient ‘amber forest’ and the pit for extraction of the ‘blue soil’ containing amber, several thousands of amber pieces with remains of Mesozoic plants and animals, including lizards.

The fort was planned to be of a square shape with four bastilles made of soil and stones in the corners. The fort was built upon the project of the court mathematician Christian Otter. In 1697, the fort was visited by Peter the Great where he studied bombardier activity. Upon returning to Russia, Peter the Great gave a command to build several forts on Kotlin Island (Kronshlot, Citadel, and Aleksandr-shanec), the prototype for which was Friedrichsburg fort. www.world-ocean.ru

Königsberg marzipan
The Herring Day Traditionally, Kaliningrad District is considered to be a fishy area. Many restaurants of the city offer fresh fish and seafood dishes. The main fish festival of the city — the Herring Day — is being held each spring on the embankment of the Planet Ocean Project Centre. On this day, the residents and guests of the city come to the embankment of Pregoli River where they regale on fish dishes and participate in the festival fairs and concerts.
Königsberg marzipan traditions are widely represented on the Kaliningrad market; they are represented both by small confectionary and large factories. The main difference between the Königsberg marzipan and the Lübeck one and some others is in its baked golden crust. Also, marzipan penny busters are produced there in the form of small loafs.

Festival of the Long Sausage Tilsit cheese
Tilsit cheese production was started in the middle of the 19th century in Tilsit (Sovetsk) by Prussian and Russian settlers from Emmental Valley (the Canton of Bern). The first buildings of the cheese factory still exist in Sovetsk.
Tilsit (German: Tilsiter) is light-yellow semi-firm cheese. It has moderately firm structure with ragged holes and splits. Tilsit cheese of industrial manufacture is being produced of pasteurized cow milk, has the fat content from 30 to 60% and darkbrown crust.
Starting from the 16th century, Festival of the Long Sausage had been celebrated by the East Prussia people. Nowadays, the ‘sausage’ celebration is being held by the Royal Gates in the former Königsberg and is organized by the Planet Ocean Project Centre.

150 kilometers of beaches with soft golden sand
The Kaliningrad beaches have acquired their wide distinction thanks to the wonderful sealine running for of about 150 kilometers from the Curonian Spit to the Baltic one. Each part of the Kaliningrad seashore is unique in its own way and inimitable. You should start your travel with visiting the Curonian Spit National Park; walk along its clean beaches and then go to the north of the Sambia peninsula right to the promenades of Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk resort towns. After that, go down a little bit southward to the Yantarny Village seashore where tourists are picking up pieces of amber and catching the fair wind while riding their surf-boards or travelling by sailing yachts; and finally, to reach the wide beaches of Baltiysk and the Baltic Spit that will amaze you with their half-wild beauty.

Baltiysk Pionersky Zelenogradsk In this resort town, you can walk along a beautiful promenade with a long beach and a big park which merges into the pine forest. The beach is covered with light powder send passing into small maritime dunes. The bottom configuration by the seashore is flat and straight. There is a pumproom located near the promenade, where everybody can satisfy their thirst by a glass of Zelenogradskaya medicinal table water. The beach is stretched right along the promenade. The ‘trademark’ of the beach-related rest in Zelenogradskoe is so called ‘frying pan’ beach which is surrounded by dunes fencing the sea wind off.
Pionersky town is located on a beach of 30 meters high so you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Baltic sea coast right from here. There is the longest sea promenade of Kaliningrad Region (of about 2km). Walking along the promenade, you can get to Zaostrovie Village (bordering with Pionersky) right from the beach. Yantarny
Svetlogorsk The town stands on a high coast, and there are seven slopes and a ropeway leading to the sea. The Svetlogorsk beach is diverse; its sand is interspersing with gravel stones. It’s quite crowded in Svetlogorsk on hot holidays, as it’s probably the most popular beach resort in Kaliningrad District. The water is clear and transparent. Sometimes, you can see some seaweed by the coast; the iodine released under the action of the sun, is easily acquired by an organism and has beneficial effects on thyroid function. The water temperature in the sea by Svetlogorsk is nearly always lower by 0.1—1 degree comparatively with Zelenogradsk. It Is connected with the deeper water and the currents’ directions.
The widest beach and the most beautiful wooden promenade of the Kaliningrad sea coast is located in a small and cozy Yantarny Village. The territory can impress by its comfort and wealth of possibilities for active recreation. The beach is equipped with deckchairs and straw umbrellas. You can quench your thirst, have a bite and have a rest in one of the nearest bungalow restaurants built in the form of a Roman galley. Besides, this part of the sea coast is very popular among surfers because it’s always windy there. In the centre of the city, you can rent a bicycle and have a ride to Sinyavino Lake. There is the largest amber deposit in the world which looks like a submerged opencast with the depth up to 30 meters; tourists can see the process of excavation from a viewing platform.
Baltyisk is the most western city of Russia, there is a sea port and a ferry terminal. There are two beaches in the city. The first one is located by the Catherine the Great monument. The beach is wide, the bottom is flat, but the water is rather deep by the coast. If you don’t like hot sun, so this place perfectly suits you. You can hide from the heat by leaving the beach and going to the grassy meadows between trees and bushes. The second beach is located on the territory of Baltiyskoe Vzmorie Tourist Complex where after walking along the promenade made of unique Siberian larch, you will definitely want to drink a refreshing cocktail in one of the cafes or have fun at one of the open-air parties which are so popular here in summer.

The luckiest people still find pieces of amber here! Yantarnoe Lake is quite big but not deep. The average depth is 20 meters. However,

Kaliningrad Zoo
Kaliningrad Zoo is one of the three old zoos of Russia (together with the zoos of Moscow and Saint Petersburg) and it is the only zoo where a lot of historical details, including building, organization, and aviary have been preserved. The wonderful old zoo (German: Königsberger Tiergarten) was opened in Königsberg in the 21st of May 1896 on the territory of the largest in the East Prussia North-East German Industrial Fair-Exhibition. The proposal about preserving the building for the zoo was put forward by German Klaas, one of the exhibition’s organizers and a passionate animal lover, who became the first director of the zoo. At the central Alley, you can see the monument to Klaas presented to him by the grateful citizens of Königsberg.

Thanks to that, you can obtain a lot of interesting information on the history of the zoo represented on various information stands, as well as to see unique exhibit items in the mini museum of the zoo.
