Welcome Message from Sue Lane

We welcome you all to Rolling Stock Networking, an international exhibition focused on Passenger and Freight Rolling Stock, Technical Enhancements, Depot Equipment, Ancillary Services and the Rail Supply Chain.

The show continues to build on its mission to provide high quality, low cost market access to all companies from the largest multinationals to start ups and entrepreneurs.

We are delighted to have added to the opportunities that the show offers to its exhibitors and visitors for RSN 2023.

Cutting through the hyperbole of fashionable industry buzz words, the show is designed to enable companies to meet, build relationships, do business, win work and mutually succeed; be that through innovation, de-carbonisation, energy efficiency, sustainability or the equally important delivery of the everyday products and dependable services upon which the railway industry relies.

We particularly thank Railway-News, Rail Partners, Rail Forum, Railway Industry Association, Jobson James Rail and the many friends that have helped us to shape an event with something for everyone.

Importantly RSN remains a show that is organised by railway people for railway people. The event is not owned by a media company and everyone in our team works day to day in the rail industry.

We would like to think that our everyday engagement in the industry has helped us to shape a superb event for you, that whilst affordable and accessible, also delivers high quality opportunities and information to help you to increase your market share in rail.

We are especially pleased to continue our support for the event charity, Railway Children. There are some fantastic raffle prizes, good luck to you all in the draw.

Most importantly we thank our exhibitors and visitors and wish that you all have, a very successful show.

Rolling Stock Networking showbigger and better than ever before

Anyone involved in Britain’s healthy rolling stock industry, whether as an operator, maintainer, component supplier, software developer or consultant, is welcome. Just register in advance for a free ticket and easy access on the day.

To be held in Derby on Thursday 6 July, Rolling Stock Networking (RSN) will be bigger and better than ever in 2023. Nearly 20% more participants than last year will fill the sold-out venue, anxious to tell visitors all about their latest products and services.

And that’s not all! Rail Partners, the trade association for the nation’s train operators, is holding a conference that will be free to attend for visitors to RSN. The Railway Industry Association is assembling a ‘Small Business Showcase’, a much anticipated ‘Meet The Buyer’ event will be hosted by Jobson James Rail, and Rail Forum will be presenting TOCTalk Live – a fast networking opportunity with senior representation from a range of train operators.

Something for everyone

The RSN 2023 exhibition will have something for everyone. UK-based train manufacturers Alstom and CAF will have a strong presence, as will suppliers of all manners of components from seats to train graphics and from cables to windscreen wipers.

Depot operators aren’t ignored, as various exhibitors will be at RSN to discuss everything from doors and jacks to fasteners, coatings and even train washes!

In short, there is something for everyone at Rolling Stock Networking - all under one roof in the centre of the country.

Business opportunities – plain and simple

Organised by rail professionals for rail professionals, Rolling Stock Networking includes all the content you would expect from a major industry event, but without the frills.

There will be 147 exhibitors, all in one arena. Stands are almost all the same size, so the major players have no great advantage over smaller suppliers - they are all able to show their offerings on an equal basis.

Swiss manufacturer Stadler, which has recently supplied new trains to a number of UK operators, will be taking a stand.

The industry’s two main trade associations are each working with their members to present what visitors and exhibitors want to see.

“ A force for good - RSN is organised by people that work every day in the Rail Industry ”
07 RSN 2023

The Railway Industry Association is presenting a Small Business Showcase, providing high-quality market access opportunities to its smaller members, while Rail Forum will be hosting a Meet the Board event immediately before the show opens, from 8:00 until 9:30 offering a cup of coffee and a breakfast roll to compensate for the early start. While the main show is open, Rail Forum will also be hosting TOCTalk, giving visitors an unrivalled chance to engage with senior representatives from a number of train operators.

Rail Forum, which is based in Derby, has invited delegates who are also members to join them for coffee and a breakfast roll before the Rolling Stock Networking show opens at 9:30. Starting at 8am, guests will be able to engage with a range of board members and guests to discuss strategic, industry direction, challenges, concerns, developments and innovations.

The Rail Forum Guests include:-

• Sarah Spink, Midlands Connect

• Kelly Warburton, GCRE

• Paul Harwood, GBRTT

• Ivan Youd, DBT

• Wendy Richards, DBT

• Jason Groombridge, Porterbrook

• Brian Freemantle, DfT

This early bird event will make an excellent start to a busy day at the Rolling Stock Networking exhibition and is not to be missed.

Showcasing smaller businesses

Much to learn from Train Operators

Rail Partners, which brings together independent owning groups, train and freight operating companies, is hosting the RSN Conference on the mezzanine level, easily accessed from the exhibition area. Free to attend, delegates can dip in and out, choosing the presentation that most suits them.

Show partner Jobson James Rail, the rail industry’s insurance broker, has put together a Meet The Buyer panel that should appeal to everyone. Delegates need to apply and book a time to meet commercial teams from Motherson Innovations, Clayton, Keolis Amey Docklands, Unipart Rail, the Department for Business and Trade, WH Davis and Alstom.

Rail Forum Board members who have indicated their attendance are:

• Will Rogers, Chair

• Michelle Craven-Faulkner, Vice Chair

• Mike Hulme, Alstom

• Nicola Phillips, Siemens

• Nick Andrew, CWE

• Dave Brookes, Elite KL

• Chris Wright, Nottingham Tram

• Donna Hoffman, Inside Out Group

• Lawrence Bowman, Network Rail

• Michael Grace, TXM Group

• Laura May, TUV Rheinland

The Railway Industry Association (RIA), which counts some of the industry’s largest companies among its members, is using Rolling Stock Networking to provide a platform for some of its smallest members to exhibit alongside the industry giants, providing an inclusive opportunity to make contacts, build relationships and increase market share. The economic benefits of developing SMEs is proven to increase employment, create high quality jobs and support the government in its aims for economic recovery and growth.

RIA operations director Gaynor Pates said: “We’re excited to be organising the RIA small business showcase, providing high quality market access opportunities to our smaller RIA Members.

“It is undoubtedly the case that SMEs and micro-companies contribute strongly to the railway with specialist products, innovative products new inventions or dependable everyday products and services.”

RSN 2023 08

Small business that will be exhibiting with RIA at Rolling Stock Networking include:

• Complete Cyber

• Hey Me

• Rail Competence & Compliance

• RTS Solutions

• Seetru

• Water-Trak

“Make sure you come along to see them and take part in this essential event!” Gaynor added.

Talk to TOCs at TOCTalk

Rail Forum is giving Rolling Stock Networking delegates the opportunity to engage with senior representatives from across a range of Train Operating Companies at its novel TOCTalk Live sessions.

Using a ‘fast networking’ format, TOCTalk Live will help delegates understand what is happening within the TOC environment, how to engage in the new budgeting processes and how to support train operators by arranging for them to speak directly to those that are the cutting edge of National Rail Contracts.

The fast networking process means

International opportunities

Meet the buyer

More companies than ever before are sending procurement specialists to Rolling Stock Networking to take part in the Meet The Buyer event organised by Jobson James Rail.

For those visitors to Rolling Stock Networking wishing to expand their international business, a discussion with international trade adviser Bill Smith should be on the agenda.

Bill Smith is an international trade adviser specialising in advanced manufacturing and rail who supports the Midlands Engine, which is part of the Department of Business and Trade (DBT). He will be in the Meet the Buyer section and appointments can be sought through the Meet the Buyer application process, drop in appointments with Bill are presently available.

Alstom is sending four procurement representatives to make sure that as many companies as possible have the chance to meet with them.

A total of 11 TOCs will be participating as well as two owning groups, the Great British Railways Transition Team and London’s Elizabeth line.

TOCTalk Live runs

1:00pm – 2:30pm, giving registered attendees ample opportunity to visit the exhibition and Conference presentations too!

DBT is the department for economic growth, supporting businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country. It advises, supports and promotes British businesses wanting to grow and export by opening up new markets by removing barriers and striking trade deals, securing global investment from businesses and investors and championing free trade, economic security, and resilient supply chains.

Bill is able to connect delegates with the appropriate services and information that is available through DBT. He can also help in developing an Export Plan, guiding companies through the process as he has many years of exporting experience in rail and other highly regulated industries

In addition, Stadler and CAF are exhibiting in the main hall, so representatives on those stands can be approached directly without appointment.

While appointments for the MTB will first be available to RSN exhibitors, delegates may also enquire whether sessions are available with the commercial teams from Motherson Innovations, Clayton, Keolis Amey Docklands, Unipart Rail, the Department for Business and Trade, WH Davis and Alstom.

09 RSN 2023

A Conference by Rail Partners at RSN 2023

Hosted this year by Rail Partners, the RSN Conference will take place throughout the day on the mezzanine floor above the main exhibition area. Organised in timetabled sessions, exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to take in those presentations that interest them and visit the exhibition stands betweentimes.

Last year Neil Ovenden, head of engineering at Rail Partners, was a speaker at the conference, delivering an overview of what the post COVID-19 pandemic GB mainline rail recovery opportunities and challenges might be for the rolling stock and associated products and services supply chain.

One year later, Rail Partners will be hosting the conference and introducing a number of speakers who will bring delegates up to date on progress being made to attract passengers back onto trains, to develop and grow the rail freight business, and meet the engineering challenges of the next few years.

Sustainability, the green agenda, decarbonisation, the national electrification programme and alternative fuels are sure to feature, so visitors to the show should check out the conference programme that will be publicised before the event on the RSN website to choose which sessions to attend.

A Conference hosted by Rail Partners at RSN 2023 will feature industry leading speakers from East Midlands Railway, Eversholt, Rail Forum, The Department for Transport, Transport Focus, First Rail, GBRTT, Hitachi Rail, GB Railfreight and will be compered by Mark Gaynor of Rail Partners.

The conference draws upon Rail Partners’ position as a specialist trade organisation with an international representation portfolio comprising of many operator groups and freight companies. The conference will examine key topics on delivering for customers and delivering for the environment in a series of valuable presentations from the contributing rail industry speakers.

Rail Partners will provide a fresh and exciting perspective to the RSN event.

The conference will provide superb content for those looking toward the passenger and freight markets and the challenges that the railway faces, both operationally and environmentally.

Following an introduction by Andy Bagnall the chief executive of Rail Partners, the morning session will examine how the railway can deliver for its customers. In the first presentation, Will Rogers, managing director at East Midlands Railway will look at the introduction of new rolling stock and the challenges and opportunities this brings to satisfy the key objective of improving the passenger / customer experience.

Shakil Ismail, head of fleet at Eversholt Rail Group will then take the stage to detail from a RoSCo perspective the plans to enhance the customer experience, balancing expectation with affordability to provide the most beneficial solutions.

The morning speakers will be joined by Elaine Clark of Rail Forum, Jag Maitala of the Department for Transport and Dan Taylor of Transport Focus to discuss the realities of a cost constrained world whilst balancing the needs and expectation of customers.

The afternoon session will focus on the challenges faced in delivering for the environment and decarbonising the railway.

First Rail is an operator group operating three major UK TOC’s including Avanti West Coast, Great Western Railway (GWR), South Western Railway (SWR) and two open access passenger rail services, Hull Trains and Lumo. Their speaker, Ben Woods, director of engineering business development, will provide the first presentation in the afternoon session, which will expand upon the importance of decarbonising rail from an owning group perspective.

Change driven by decarbonisation has its consequences for strategic planning of rolling stock, the depots in which they are maintained and upon the programme for electrification. Rich Fisher head of strategic planningnetwork and integration at GBRTT will explain the outlook and the impact of decarbonisation policy on the wider railway, reflecting on the unique challenges that such a complex transportation system faces.

The afternoon panel session will see Lorna McDonald of Hitachi Rail and Robert Tiller of GB Railfreight join the afternoon speakers, to provide analysis and objective consideration to the pace at which decarbonisation can be progressed in an effective, but affordable, manner.

We expect significant audience participation in the panel sessions as the topics all have impact on the many organisations that together deliver the operational railway.

Attending this high-quality event is open to all RSN delegates free of charge.

Innovators set sights on revolutionising train cleaning operations worldwide with showcase at RSN 2023

After incredible market feedback in its groundbreaking train cleaning concept, Orange Train Wash (OTW) is set to take the train washing world by storm – starting with a presentation of its first ever demonstration unit outside the Derby Arena during RSN 2023.

OTW revolutionises how train exteriors are maintained with trailblazing cleanliness standards and radical environmental, carbon reduction, installation, productivity and cost saving benefits.

Now, empowered by Dura Composites as its manufacturing partner, and signing an innovative commercial partnership with the Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) to showcase the modular system, OTW is on a mission to provide the industry with a more sustainable and cost-effective way of cleaning trains –with significant interest already from across the world, from the USA to Australia.

PHENOMENAL SUSTAINABILITY AND COST SAVING BENEFITS

OTW’s chemical-free solution uses 85º deionised water and powerful air blades and brushes, which push the water back down into the Envirosump water catchment system, ready to be pumped back into each machine for recycling. The filters clean the water at 15 litres per minute back into the larger clean water tank ready for the next clean, with no drainage required.

Its 60 water jets allow for an eight-car train to be cleaned within less than four minutes, and with a minimal footprint either side of the train, it provides huge savings on the civil engineering costs required for other cleaning solutions. The modular system can be moved where it is needed, rather than shunting trains within the depot and cleans trains at a speed of three miles per hour.

The Orange Train Wash maintains water temperature at 20º before heating it back to 85º for the next approaching train. This means that unlike conventional train washes, winter conditions won’t disrupt train washing programmes. Featuring easy to use reporting software, the system also provides accurate reports of carbon and water savings.

Testing discovered that 38% of dirt from traditional cleaning solutions was detergent that had not been removed. This is completely eradicated by OTW’s chemical-free operations. Traditional solutions also use cold water which increases the need for legionella testing. OTW’s risk of legionella is at zero as it heats the water beyond the 60 degrees required to kill the bacteria.

Martin Whitbread, OTW founder, says: “This is a very proud moment for all of us and marks our most significant milestone so far. The ability to see the world’s first Orange Train Wash underscores that this is not just a concept, but a real world solution that will transform exterior train cleaning as we know it.

“A system like this proves that sustainability doesn’t always have to come at a cost. By doing things in a more efficient way operators and asset managers can also realise cost saving and operational benefits. OTW allows for the system to be deployed as either a temporary or permanent solution, which is particularly useful as depots continue to scale.

Over the last three years OTW has seen a significant level of worldwide interest and the opportunity to see our demonstrator at RSN 2023 shows that we are ready to make a difference to how train operating companies and rolling stock providers clean their trains.”

Thanks to its modular nature, the Orange Train Wash can be installed in as little as three days from beginning to end.

2 RSN Derby 2023 RSN 2023 22

GAINING MOMENTUM

The presentation of OTW at RSN 2023 will reinforce to the industry how the system works and the benefits it will bring when implemented. The partnership with GCRE will enable OTW to showcase the system in a live environment in South Wales. The GCRE site will become the international showcase site for Orange Train Wash, providing clients with a handson opportunity to see the innovative system in action. The deal has developed a commercial model where both OTW and GCRE benefit from sales of the cutting-edge technology.

Chair of OTW, Stephen Collicott, said: “To have the Global Centre of Rail Excellence as our international showcase site is a significant step in demonstrating our capabilities and the difference Orange Train Wash will make.

The interest in Orange Train Wash already spans the globe and, to work collaboratively with an innovative world class facility will bring to life the environmental, practical and financial benefits to organisations in an applied environment.”

SUPPORTING MAINTENANCE TEAMS TO DEMONSTRATE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

The intelligence provided by the OTW system allows maintenance teams to demonstrate their carbon footprint from using the machines, thanks to digital reporting systems which feed directly to desktops. OTW provides data on the environmental benefits to feed into reporting where required, such as the amount of water used, recycled and lost.

Martin said: “We recognise that companies need to be able to tangibly demonstrate where they are achieving carbon savings and be able to get that information seamlessly. Our system provides this routinely – giving recycling and carbon footprint

reporting at the click of a button to support organisations with their wider objectives.

“A solution like this is essentially a no-brainer compared to the traditional cleaning solutions currently available. Speaking to companies at shows like RSN have enabled the rail industry to understand the benefits, and the excitement building around OTW has been remarkable.”

The momentum we have gathered has been brilliant and we are excited to revolutionise the industry on a global scale. Empowered by Dura Composites as our manufacturing partner, we are bringing Orange Train Wash from concept to reality for rail operators who are ready to Embrace the Future of Train Washing.”
