Great Benefits Of Essential Fatty Acids
Does the term “essential fatty acids” (EFAs) sound toxic to you? It cannot be helped as it contains two words “fat” and “acid” that are supposed to be avoided. Does it really have fat and acid? Yes. The keyword, though, is “essential”. Indeed, there are good acids and good fats and essential fatty acids foods are beneficial for you. EFAs or omega 3 and omega 6 are acids produced when fats are broken down. Human beings and other animals must ingest EFAs because your body requires them for good health but cannot synthesize them. They are required, and not those that act only as fuel, for biological processes. In other words, EFAs are considered healthy fats and good acids. EFAs can be monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, or saturated. Used for energy by most types of cells, these acids are not highly soluble in water. They contain both carbon and hydrogen molecules – and are, therefore, organic.
There are only two EFAs that are known for humans: alphalinolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid). Other fatty acids are only considered "conditionally essential", which include gamma-linolenic acid, lauric acid, and palmitoleic acid. In 1923, when the two EFAs were first discovered, they were designated Vitamin F. So what other benefits can you get from these essential fatty acids? They play a part in many metabolic processes. There is evidence to suggest that low levels of essential fatty acids, or the wrong balance of types among the EFAs, may be a factor in a number of illnesses, including osteoporosis. EFAs help move oxygen through the bloodstream to all parts of the body. They assist cell membrane development, strength, and function, and they are vital for strong organs and tissue. EFAs can also help keep skin healthy, help prevent early aging, and may promote weight loss by helping the body digest cholesterol. Basically, they help rid the arteries of cholesterol build up. Another purpose of fatty acids is to assist the adrenal and thyroid glands, which may also help regulate weight. Research even suggests that high intakes of fish oil and omega3 fatty acids are said to decrease rates of major depression. Furthermore, EFAs can also help the immune system to react properly. They are required to retain healthy lipid levels in the blood, and necessary for proper clotting and regulated blood pressure. Needless to say, EFAs are essential for optimum health.
Where can you get EFAs? Food sources with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids include fish and shellfish, flaxseed oil, hemp oil, canola oil, soya oil, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, leafy vegetables, and walnuts. Almost all the polyunsaturated fats in the human diet are essential fatty acids. But since they cannot be produced naturally in the body, they must be ingested in the form of foods or natural supplements. It is important, however, to discuss all supplements with your healthcare provider before you begin taking them. Or read a good guide about essential fatty acids.
