Do Know If You Have Severe Constipation?

Are you experiencing severe constipation?

You are suffering from a severe case of constipation if doctors can’t find out the cause of your condition through basic tests. It is also severe if the constipation does not respond easily to treatments.

The symptoms of a severe case vary depending on an individual’s diet, age and level of activity. Most patients with severe constipation complain of excruciating pain when defecating, several days without bowel movement and blood in the stool.

The basic tests of constipation include physical examination and assessment of dietary history. One way is to do a rectal examination with the finger to determine if the anal sphincter is tight, which may be the cause of the difficulty in defecation.

Sometimes a doctor would require patients to do a food diary to evaluate how well a patient increases his dietary fiber during treatment.

Physicians need to define the type of constipation so that it can direct them to proper diagnosis and treatment. When constipation is severe, more complicated tests are required to determine the cause. A more careful dietary history is probably required: patients are asked to keep a food diary for a week or two to reveal deficiency in the diet.

In other cases, physicians undergo colonic transit studies wherein X-ray examinations are used to find out how long it takes for food to travel through the intestines. In more severe constipation cases, these procedures may be required: blood tests, defecography and ano-rectal motility studies.

As it is, the treatment of severe cases of constipation entirely depends on the diagnosis and cause. If constipation is caused by another disease (like scleroderma), it is likely that doctors would recommend treatment for both constipation and scleroderma. It is therefore advisable for any patient suspecting of a severe case to consult a physician immediately.

Treatment of constipation, whether severe or not, is alternatively possible using simple methods and medications if done in a holistic manner. A severe case of constipation should not be feared because there’s still a fast and easy way out.

That is, if the severe constipation is treated through its core to attain permanent cure.

Things must be done to fix the diet and whole lifestyle of an individual having a severe case of constipation.
