IT'S PERSONAL "I had a lot of options when I graduated from high school, but I chose RSU. The campus is beautiful, and the financial aid office connected me with scholarship opportunities that allowed me to graduate debt free. I got the traditional university experience while getting hands-on research experience that will definitely pay off when I go to dental school." CLAREMORE | BARTLESVILLE | PRYOR

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT We welcome you to another season of Hillcat soccer, which promises to build upon the excellence we've seen in previous years. The development of our athletic programs mirrors the exciting changes that have occurred throughout the university with a distinguished list of recent milestones that includes: • Developing as Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past decade while still maintaining the personalized attention that’s become the university's hallmark; • Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry; • Constructing two student apartment communities and a dining hall (to open in fall 2014) that serve the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university; • Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and • Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service. RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In only a few short years, our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connection to the community. The university has invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turf installation at Soldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus. We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4 million renovations of the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, but also represents their investment in the quality of life at Rogers State. This year, our Hillcats begin their first season of competition within the Heartland Conference in the NCAA Division II. We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations have placed on promoting healthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values for RSU’s programs, and we work daily to impress them upon our student-athletes. We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great season on the pitch.

LETTER FROM THE INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Greetings from the Hill and welcome to the seventh edition of Hillcat Soccer. The RSU Athletic Department embarks on a new chapter during the 2013-14 campaign as the Hillcats enter the Heartland Conference and continue the NCAA Division II membership process. The RSU men’s and women’s soccer teams have enjoyed tremendous success since their inaugural seasons in 2007. During our tenure in the Sooner Athletic Conference, both programs qualified for the SAC postseason tournament in six consecutive seasons. Coach Larkin and his staff have built a solid foundation for the program while also emphasizing the importance of academic success. Four players have garnered CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, 12 players have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete, and nine players have been chosen CoSIDA Academic All-District. The 2010 women’s team earned the NSCAA Academic Team Award and the 2012 women’s team was named a NAIA Scholar Team. We are very proud of our soccer team’s accomplishments and are excited to see what the future holds for the programs. The outpouring of community support has played a huge role in our success and will remain vital to Hillcat Athletics as we strive to raise the bar once again in 2013-2014. Thank you for all you do to support the Hillcats!

ABOUT RSU

u RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor’s and associate degrees.

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success Story

Rogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education. Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 60 percent, earning RSU the title of Oklahoma's fastest-growing regional university A dynamic, progressive university with nearly 4,300 students, RSU is widely recognized for its high-quality academic programs, distance learning options and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area. RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technology, environmental conservation, military history, sport management and game development. Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studies through RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence in its nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements

RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a major accomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU. RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with private, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earn college credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders and policymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

ABOUT RSU Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees available in their fields from esteemed institutions across the nation, including Princeton University, Duke University and the University of Oklahoma.

A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus was completed in 2010. The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leadingedge features associated with higher learning today, including classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery and an outdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.

The university’s Honors Program provides an atmosphere where scholars can challenge themselves academically to maximize their college experience through specialized courses, student/faculty joint research projects, and a strong emphasis on service learning in the community.

RSU opened in September 2011 a new student apartment community that doubles the number of students living on the main campus in Claremore. The $11.5 million project accommodates up to 255 students in a three-level facility, located across the street from the present university apartments. The new 87,118-square-foot complex is located just west of Soldier Field. A new student dining hal will open on campus in fall 2014.

The President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year scholarship program that fosters personal and professional development, was designed for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities. RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy and Wales through the University's Studies-at-Large Program. The international study programs provide students with opportunities to see the world, learn about other cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Stratton Taylor Library, which opened in 2004, features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations and classrooms.

A Brief History of RSU

Growth in Learning Facilities

RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus.

The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, has become the centerpiece of the main campus in Claremore. This twolevel, 50,000-square-foot facility combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community.

However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971.

6

ABOUT RSU

u RSU is Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country. In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaureate level was granted in 2000. Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs to students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, Pryor and online.

HILLCAT LIFE PROGRAMS

u Over 120 student-athletes have graduated over the last six years.

Academic Development

The Hillcat Academic Center is located in the basement of Bushyhead Fieldhouse. There, student-athletes have access to a full computer lab with a printer and a classroom that can be utilized for study-hall as well as individual study. Academic advising for all student-athletes is available in the office of the Assistant Athletic Director for Student Development. Counseling for choosing a major and advising for course enrollment are provided, as well as help in obtaining a faculty advisor for those that have chosen a major. Tutors are available for most subjects by athletic department academic tutors in one-on-one or group sessions. Additional tutoring is available through individual academic departments. Hillcat Athletics requires study hall for all freshman and first semester transfer students to attend per week. Weekly study hall time thereafter is required as determined by cumulative GPA.

NCAA Compliance Training

Hillcat student-athletes are educated about NCAA rules and regulations. Including the NCAA regulations of practice and play seasons, outside competition and tryouts, commercial endorsements, boosters, student host recruiting and progress towards a degree.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a variety of programs to enrich the college experiences of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Habitudes for Athletes Habitudes for Athletes is a character-based leadership training program designed to prepare athletes for successful participation in team sports as well as life off the playing field. The Habitudes curriculum uses powerful images to teach important character and leadership principles in an epic fashion that is both engaging and memorable. As a result, the athletes are equipped and empowered to develop healthy life skills that will positively impact their lives.

8

HILLCAT LIFE PROGRAMS

u Athletics has become an integral part of the campus community, with student-athletes serving as leaders on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Social Media Training Rogers State educates and prepares student-athletes to make a positive impact through social media. RSU helps studentathletes understand the risk involved with using social media poorly both currently and in the future. Through social media training athletes are educated of the opportunities of social media in developing themselves for the workplace. Student-athletes learn the impact of current social media interaction can have on their job search. Drug and Alcohol Counseling Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. Dangers of Gambling Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NCAA rules. Community Engagement  Rogers State athletic teams develop relationships with charities and community organizations throughout Claremore and surrounding communities to build relationships with community members. Organizations Hillcat teams have worked with include: TOPSoccer, Safenet, Rogers County Youth Services, Claremore Sequoyah Elementary, First Baptist Church Recovery Program, Claremore’s Westside Elementary, Catoosa Special Olympics and the Claremore Community Center’s Blast program. In the fall 2012 semester, Hillcat athletic teams combined to work over 900 hours with community organizations.

DEREK LARKIN - HEAD SOCCER COACH In just six seasons on the Hill, Head Men’s and Women’s Soccer Coach Derek Larkin has established a winning tradition with the Rogers State University soccer programs.

A four-year starter at Missouri Valley College, Larkin was a two-year captain leading the Vikings to two Heart of America Conference Championships. He was twice named first team all-conference and second team all-region. Larkin currently serves as a boy’s coach for the Northeast Oklahoma Futbol Club and is the former director of coaching for the Oklahoma Revolution Soccer Club and girl’s head coach for the Tulsa Nationals Soccer Club. He has collected four Directors Cup Oklahoma State Championships in his coaching career.

Larkin led both of his first-year programs to a second place finish in Sooner Athletic Conference and a spot in the Region VI Tournament in 2007, reaching the postseason with both squads again in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He spurred the Hillcat women to the SAC Tournament Championship during their inaugural season and was named SAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year for his efforts.

Larkin and his wife Christy have two boys, Zach (14) and Adam (12), and reside in Owasso.

His teams have combined for 146 wins over a six-year span with the women’s program posting an 81-30-7 all-time record. Both the men and women enjoyed double digit win totals in each of their first five seasons and have qualified for the Sooner Athletic Conference postseason tournament over the last six seasons. Under his guidance the Hillcats have produced two NAIA All-Americans, eight first team All-SAC members, 28 second team All-SAC members, one SAC Player of the Year, one SAC Newcomer of the Year, two SAC Goalkeepers of the Year, four National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NAIA All-Southwest Team members, four CoSIDA Academic All-America, one NSCAA Scholar Athlete AllAmerica, 12 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete, and nine CoSIDA Academic All-District players. His 2010 women’s team earned the NSCAA Academic Team Award and the 2012 women’s team was named a NAIA Scholar Team. Larkin joined RSU in January 2007 as the university’s first head soccer coach. Before coming to the Hill, Larkin enjoyed success as the head boy’s soccer coach at Bishop Kelley High School from 2004-06. He led the Comets to back-to-back state championships in 2005 and 2006. Larkin previously served as the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Bacone College from 2002 to 2004. He was named the Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading the Lady Warriors to the conference championship. Larkin also juggled “double duty” as both the men’s and women’s head soccer coach at Missouri Valley College from 1997 to 1999 and at Catoosa High School from 1999 to 2002. He compiled six district championships at Catoosa and was honored as the head coach of the Oklahoma AllState team in 2002.

10

SHAWN SLATER - ASSISTANT HEAD COACH Assistant Head Coach Shawn Slater returns for the seventh season of RSU Hillcat soccer. Slater has been an integral part of establishing a winning tradition at RSU since the program’s inception in 2007. He brings a vast amount of experience as a player and coach to the program. An All-State selection at Tulsa Nathan Hale High School, Slater later starred at John Brown University as well as with several professional teams, including the Tulsa Roughnecks and the Dallas Sidekicks. He worked as an assistant coach at Booker T. Washington and Tulsa Memorial High School before landing his first head coaching position at Nathan Hale in 1995. Slater later guided the Bixby and Chickasha boys’ soccer programs and helped Catoosa claim the Class 4A State Championship in 200304. Slater most recently served as head boy’s coach at Claremore High School, leading the Zebras to its first ever state title appearance in 2007. He currently serves as a Director and is a staff coach for Blitz United Soccer Club. Shawn and Erica Parks have a daughter Paige (3) and a son Jaxson (1).

LESLIE FOSTER - ASSISTANT COACH Leslie Foster begins her first season as a member of the Rogers State soccer coaching staff in 2013. Foster began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. After her coaching stint at NWOSU, she began coaching for the Blitz United Academy team. Foster completed a standout playing career at NWOSU in 2005. She was a four-year starter for the Rangers and currently holds the record for most games played. During her senior campaign in 2005, Foster earned ESPN-The Magazine Scholar-Athlete honors and was named to the All-Region IV team. She was a two-time NAIA Scholar Athlete and in 2004 she helped guide the Rangers to a Sooner Athletic Conference Championship. Foster earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Sociology from Northwestern Oklahoma State in 2006 and completed her master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma in 2013.

BRYAN WEYGAND - ASSISTANT COACH Assistant coach Bryan Weygand begins his sixth season with the Hillcats this fall. Weygand works with the keepers for both programs. His coaching career began at Bixby High School as an assistant from 1996-2001. Weygand coached the Hurricane Futball Club in 1999 as co-coach of the 88 boys until their graduation in 2006. Since 2002 Weygand has overseen all goalkeeper training duties within the Hurricane club including the competitive, academy and recreational divisions of the Broken Arrow Soccer Club. MEN’S SOCCER OUTLOOK The Rogers State men’s soccer team returns a veteran squad for the 2013 campaign after registering a second place finish in its final season as a Sooner Athletic Conference member in 2012. Head Coach Derek Larkin hopes to see his team maintain the same type of success in the Hillcats’ inaugural season in the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference this year.

MIDFIELDERS

“We are returning almost everybody from last year’s team and we have a lot more experience,” Larkin said. “The preseason looked good and the kids are more fit than they ever have been. We are excited about where we are going.”

“Niall Masterson is coming back and he is the engine that keeps the team running in the midfield, the go to guy,” Larkin said. “He’s the guy that distributes the ball and controls the midfield.”

Junior Niall Masterson returns for his junior campaign to control the midfield. In his first season at RSU the Dublin, Ireland native earned first team All-Sooner Athletic Conference honors, starting in all 17 contests he appeared in with three goals and four assists.

The midfield will provide the most depth for RSU entering the 2013 season. A mix of returners and newcomers will complete the midfield, including a position shift for Kaspars Kokis who played defense during the bulk of his freshman season.

FORWARDS

The Hillcats return three of their top four scorers from last season, including the only goal scorer to reach double digits, Necas Collins. The junior from Kingston, Jamaica burst onto the scene in his first season on the Hill with 11 goals, starting in 16 of the 17 games he played in last year.

“We have a lot of players that are going to work in the middle. Kaspars Kokis played in the back his freshman year but towards the end of the year we started moving him up so I think he is going to be a player who is going to be a mainstay in the midfield,” Larkin said. “Chris Pérez, who is a redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow High School (Okla.), is a very hard working player and going to be a great role player for us. Danko Kenjic will also contribute in the midfield. Freshman Sergio Tapia Carrasco, who is a great playmaker, will be a difference maker. There are just a lot of kids right now that we think are going to make a difference and contribute to what we are doing in the midfield.”

“As far as our forwards returning we have our leading goal scorer Necas Collins coming back,” Larkin said. “He has a lot of experience and scored a lot of goals for us last year and we are expecting the same type of performance from him this season.” Tulsa, Okla, natives Walter Hubbard and Austin Sexton both transferred to the Hill for the 2013 campaign. Coach Larkin is looking to the duo to help lead the attack and produce goals. “We have some new key players Wally Hubbard, a transfer from Oklahoma Wesleyan, and Austin Sexton who came to RSU from NEO,” Larkin said. “They are both fantastic additions to our team and they really compliment Necas. In the past, we have worked with one or two strikers but now we are working with three or four. I think it is going to create a lot of opportunities and really help our goal production.”

DEFENDERS

With the loss of four-year starting center back Bryan Jones to graduation in the spring, the Hillcats will have a huge hole to fill. However, Coach Larkin is confident that the defense will be a strong suit this year. He is looking to sophomore Mitchell Sowerby to anchor

the backline. The Willington, England native started in 13 of the 17 games he played in as a true freshman, tallying one goal and three assists. Garron Hayes, Kevin Howard and Caleb Pitts are also returning to the backline after seeing significant time last season.

“We are stepping into a conference that is very strong, so day in and day out it is just going to be a brutal schedule and the guys are so excited about it,” Larkin said. “That’s what they want, to play the best each and every day. Our only problem right now is the season cannot start soon enough. They are ready to play.”

“In the back we lost key players like Bryan Jones and goalkeeper Nate Inger but we still have returning backs like Sowerby and Hayes. Sowerby started for us most of last year and Garron Hayes got a lot of minutes last year. As a senior with experience, Garron will be picking up where Bryan Jones left off. Caleb Pitts and Kevin Howard are also returners that garnered quality minutes last year and redshirt freshman Eddie Choe will also be battling for minutes in the back. So we are very confident that our back line will be as good as it has ever been.”

GOALKEEPERS

Coach Larkin will have to replace two-year starter Nate Inger in goal this season. RSU will carry two goalkeepers on its roster. Backup goalkeeper Mitchell Penton returns for his junior season and newcomer Joey Arnold will vie for time in goal. “Mitch Penton who was the back up last year is looking better than ever,” Larkin said. “Joey Arnold, from Broken Arrow High School, is going to be a huge addition.”

SCHEDULE

The Hillcats will take on arguably their toughest schedule in program history in 2013. Coach Larkin has beefed up the schedule this season with highly touted NCAA Division II opponents along with a few familiar NAIA rivalries. “Right now we have five top 20 teams plus Division I ORU on the schedule,” Larkin said. “It will by far be the toughest schedule we have ever had. It’s not about a championship for our guys, they want to play and compare themselves to the best players in the country. So I went out and scheduled the absolute toughest schedule I possibly could get.” RSU will take on NCAA Division I opponent Oral Roberts for the second time in the program’s short tenure. Last time the two teams clashed in 2010 RSU made history, as the Cats knocked off ORU in Tulsa, Okla. 1-0 in dramatic fashion. It was the first time any RSU team had defeated a NCAA Division I opponent. RSU will open the season at home on September 10 against a familiar foe, Southern Nazarene. On September 22 they will face national powerhouse Midwestern State before starting the conference slate on October 5 in Laredo, Texas against Texas A&M International. In October, the Hillcats will face regional opponent Northeastern State, who went to the Elite 8 last

2012 MEN’S SOCCER SEASON IN REVIEW center midfield. He finished the season with three goals and four assists.

The Rogers State men’s soccer team compiled its sixth consecutive winning season and reached postseason play for the sixth straight year in 2012. RSU finished second in the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season standings, the best finish in program history.

Inger was joined by fellow senior Bryan Jones on the allconference second team. Inger started 18 games at goalkeeper making 69 saves, totaling three shutouts and an 8-7-3 record. Jones scored two goals and tallied one assist in his 18 games as the anchor of the RSU defense. Necas Collins and Mohammed Shaban were both named second team selections. Collins, in his first year as a Hillcat, totaled a team best 11 goals and finished with three assists in 17 games played. The Kingston, Jamaica native started 16 games for Coach Larkin as a sophomore forward. Shaban added five goals and two assists in his sophomore season with the Cats. The Tulsa, Okla. native had two game-winning goals and started 15 of his 18 appearances in 2012.

The Hillcat men tallied a season opening 3-0 victory over Missouri Baptist before dropping back-to-back games to Southwestern Christian and No. 13 Oklahoma Wesleyan. The 12 record was the worst three-game start for the RSU men in program history. A 7-0 scoring barrage lit up the scoreboard similar to the lightning storm at halftime in Muskogee as RSU bested Bacone, putting the Cats back at .500. Coach Derek Larkin’s squad returned home for a six game home stand but the return to the renovated Soldier Field didn’t begin in favor of the Hillcats. Ottawa University and Hannibal LaGrange bested the Cats to begin the home stand but a 2-1 victory over Friends University put RSU a game under .500. Missouri Valley claimed a 3-2 victory over RSU before Larkin’s men downed NCAA Division III opponent Austin College 3-1 and Oklahoma City University 3-1 to close out the home stand. A pair of goals by Mohammed Shaban pushed the Hillcats past the Stars for the third straight year. No. 5 University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma found the back of the net in both halves against the Hillcats in Chickasha as the Drovers topped RSU 40. The early October loss to USAO was the final time the Hillcats would be found in the loss column. RSU finished with a draw in its next three games versus MidAmerica Christian, at Lubbock Christian and at Wayland Baptist. Senior goalkeeper Nathan Inger tallied his third shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over John Brown as the Lawton, Okla. native tallied four saves. Whellyn Carroll’s second chance goal versus Oklahoma Baptist in the 73rd minute was the game winner in a 2-1 victory over the Bison. RSU bested St. Gregory’s 3-2 to close out the regular season and grab hold of second place in the SAC. RSU would face OBU for the second time in eleven days in the opening round of Sooner Athletic Conference tournament play. The Bison claimed a 4-0 victory over the Hillcats in the field but later would forfeit the game. The Hillcats concluded the season 9-6-3 and 4-1-3 in conference play. Forward Necas Collins was twice named SAC Offensive Player of the Week while goalkeeper Nathan Inger was named SAC Defensive Player of the Week for October 15-21. Sophomore Patrick Seward was the lone men’s soccer player named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Five Hillcat men were named to the All-Conference team headlined by first team selection Niall Masterson. The sophomore from Dublin, Ireland started 17 games for RSU at

WOMEN’S SOCCER OUTLOOK The Rogers State women’s soccer team found success right from the start, garnering a Sooner Athletic Conference championship in its inaugural season in 2007. The Hillcats look to continue their winning ways as the program begins a new era in the Heartland Conference. The 2013 season will feature a mix of youth and veterans as the team looks to establish themselves in their new conference home.

“Taylor Hallford was a freshman last year who scored a lot of goals and now she is coming back for her sophomore year and has a little more experience,” Larkin said. “On top of that we have Courtney Tucker from Bartlesville who is going to step in and be an impact player right away. Carley Johnson was injured last year and did not get any chances as a freshman but looks great right now as a forward. I think she is going to be able to step in and really contribute.”

“This team is going to be the very first team to compete at the NCAA level,” Larkin said. “They are going to leave their mark for years to come and they are always going to be able to say they were on that first team. So we have a lot to play for and I think the kids are really buying into it. From that standpoint I think it’s really going to be an exciting season.”

Junior Tara Garrett is arguably the most versatile player on the squad. She has anchored the backline for the past two seasons but has found her way into the attack on several occasions, netting two goals and dishing out one assist last season. Coach Larkin could see her moving up into the offense more this season.

Six newcomers join 14 returners for the 2013 season. “The entire back line is returning, two players in the midfield are coming back so we feel really good about where our team is right now. They are more fit than they have ever been, they have been training really hard.”

“Tara, who played in the back all last year, might be one of our better forwards. We are hoping that with the depth we have in the back Tara will be able to move around and play a more offensive role.”

MIDFIELDERS

Coach Larkin hopes to see his team improve throughout the season. They plan to take the season one game at a time.“Since the program started six years ago we have put an emphasis on improving every time we step on the field. Every game we want to get better. Every game we want to compete and we have players who have really bought in to that. They are not concerned with a championship; they are concerned about that first game against Southern Nazarene. They really want to beat Southern Nazarene. We just take it one game at a time.”

Junior Blair Thomas and senior Melissa Subu bring experience to the midfield. Thomas started in 15 of the 16 games she played in last season while Subu tallied one goal and four assists. “Blair is one of our most fit players on the team, she is one of our more technical players, and we expect really big things from her this year. She was more of a role player last year, inserting herself a little more late in the year. Melissa Subu is a great player. She is a senior who has played for us for four years now. I think she is going to have a really big year.”

FORWARDS

Two newcomers and one returner will join Thomas and Subu in the midfield.

Despite the loss of one of the team’s most lethal strikers, Jordan Beasley, along with seniors Veronica Subu and Lauren Hager, Coach Larkin is confident the offense won’t skip a beat.

“Lucy Redmond is a fantastic player and has really shown well in the pre-season,” Larkin said. “I think she is going to be a huge attribute. Kealani Chaidez from Las Vegas is another player we are looking to help us out a lot. Cierra Lohaus plays in the back but also plays defensive midfield. So I think we have a lot of options and a lot of experience in that position. These players are going to be our glue and we expect a huge year out of them.“

“Well there is no doubt that the loss of Veronica Subu, Jordan Beasley and Lauren Hager was a huge void to fill,” Larkin said. “Those three were the key components on last year’s team. But we feel very confident in the players we have brought in this year.”

#15 Loren Leforce

The Hillcats return last year’s leading goal scorer Taylor Hallford. The Sand Springs, Okla. native burst onto the scene during her freshman campaign tallying eight goals and four assists. 34

WOMEN’S SOCCER OUTLOOK “With the jump to Division II our strength of schedule has dramatically increased, so day in and day out the games we play are going to be as good as anything we have played in the past,” Larkin said. “The girls are really going to have to step up. I think we have the right chemistry and the right type of people to do that. They are really up for the challenge and excited about going new places, playing new teams and being in a new conference. All of that has really sparked an excitement within our program. So we are very confident about the future.”

DEFENDERS

Garrett will play dual roles on the pitch, balancing offensive and defensive duties. The Claremore, Okla. native has anchored the back line the last two seasons and will be called upon to continue that role for her junior season. “Of course every defender wants to play forward,” Larkin said. “But she is athletic, smart and technical. She really has been the anchor and will continue to be. But the great thing is if we are needing a little spark on offense we are going to have that option because we are going to have some depth.” Experienced center back Haley Wenlock looks to help improve an already capable backline. Assisting her on defense will be three-year starter Loren LeForce who has been a mainstay on the backline throughout her career. “The addition of Haley Wenlock in the back will be crucial to the defense,” Larkin said. “She has a lot of experience because she is a junior college player. Loren LeForce will be on the right side and has basically started for us the last three years. Macy Travis, Olivia Freeman and Taylor James will also contribute. We have lots of options in the back.”

GOALKEEPERS

In goal, senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris started in all 18 contests with 83 saves and five shutouts, allowing less than one goal per game. She will be challenged day-to-day by freshman Teri Cocke. Coach Larkin sees the freshman from New Braunfels, Texas as a welcomed addition to the team. “Our goalkeeper Jordy Harris coming back for her senior year and had an outstanding season last year. She kept us in a whole lot of games and helped us to many victories. She saved some great penalties in the playoffs. Backup keeper Teri Cocke is going to be a great addition and really push Jordy. She is ready to step in at any time.”

SCHEDULE

The Hillcats open the season with back-to-back contests. RSU opens the 2013 slate against former Sooner Athletic Conference foe Southern Nazarene at Soldier Field on September 10. The following night, the Cats will travel to Tulsa, Okla. to take on NCAA Division I opponent ORU. The Hillcats open conference play on the road on October 5 at Texas A&M International and round out the season on senior night against Newman (Kan.) on November 2. u Jordan Harris returns for her senior season in goal for the Hillcats.

The Hillcat women finished the season with a record of 12-3-3. In their final season competing in the Sooner Athletic Conference, the Cats registered a fourth place finish with a 4-2-2 record.

The Rogers State women’s soccer team excelled not only on the pitch but also in the classroom. Three Hillcats were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Lauren Hager, Loren LeForce and Jordan Beasley were each named to the All-America Third Team. The trio becomes the first RSU women’s soccer players to receive the honor. Cierra Lohaus was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District team. Seniors Jessica Turner and Hager along with juniors Tara Garrett, LeForce and Lohaus were named 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.

Head Coach Derek Larkin’s squad opened the season with a 4-0 win over Missouri Baptist with goals from four different Hillcat players. After falling in their second contest of the year to NCAA DI opponent Oral Roberts, 2-0, the Hillcats bounced back with a seven-game winning streak, including two overtime victories over Ottawa (Kan.) and Oklahoma Wesleyan. RSU started the conference slate with back-to-back losses against Oklahoma City and USAO. The loss against the Drovers came in overtime. The Cats returned to the win column with a 3-0 win over Mid-America Christian and didn’t lose another game during regular season play. RSU tallied wins over Wayland Baptist, John Brown and St. Gregory’s while battling Lubbock Christian to a 1-1 tie and going toeto-toe with Oklahoma Baptist but settling for a scoreless draw. ABOUT THE HEARTLAND CONFERENCE The Heartland Conference is an NCAA Division II conference, founded in 1999, that currently consists of 10 schools, six from Texas, two from Oklahoma, and one each from Arkansas and Kansas. The schools comprising the Heartland Conference stretch from as far north as Wichita, Kan., as far east as Fort Smith, Ark., as far south as Laredo, Texas, and as far west as Goodwell, Oklahoma. The Conference stretches over a distance of 1,050 miles north to south and 610 east to west. The schools that are in the Heartland Conference include founding members St. Edward's University (Austin, Texas), and St. Mary’s University (San Antonio, Texas), and expansion members Dallas Baptist University (Dallas, Texas) in 2002 and again in 2004, Oklahoma Panhandle State University (Goodwell, Oklahoma) in 2002, and Newman University (Wichita, Kansas), Texas A&M International University (Laredo, Texas) and The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (Odessa, Texas) in 2006, the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (2009), McMurry University and Oklahoma Christian University in 2012, and Rogers State and Lubbock Christian in 2013. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are national championships in baseball, golf, swimming, basketball, softball, and nationally ranked teams in all sports. The strength of the student-athlete concept is well supported by the many NCAA scholar-athletes in each school, the high cumulative GPA of the student-athletes in each school, and the high number of student-athletes who graduate from each institution in the Heartland. The Heartland Conference is the newest of the NCAA Division II conferences. At the present time, there are 24 conferences in NCAA Division II, totaling almost 300 institutions in full or provisional status across the nation. Members of NCAA Division II believe that a well-conducted intercollegiate athletics program, based on sound educational principles and practices, is a proper part of the educational mission of a university or college and that the educational welfare of the participating student-athlete is of primary concern.

54

ABOUT THE HEARTLAND CONFERENCE Members of NCAA Division II support the following principles in the belief that these objectives assist in defining the division and the possible differences between it and other divisions of the Association. This statement shall serve as a guide for the preparation of legislation by the division and for planning and implementation of programs by institutions and conferences. A member of Division II: u Believes in promoting the academic success of its student-athletes, measured in part by an institution's student-athletes graduating at least at the same rate as the institution's student body; u Believes that participation in intercollegiate athletics benefits the educational experience of its student-athletes and the entire campus community; u Believes in offering opportunities for intercollegiate athletics participation consistent with the institution's mission and philosophy; u Believes in preparing student-athletes to be good citizens, leaders and contributors in their communities; u Believes in striving for equitable participation and competitive excellence, encouraging sportsmanship and ethical conduct, enhancing diversity and developing positive societal attitudes in all of its athletics endeavors; u Believes in scheduling the majority of its athletics competition with other members of Division II, insofar as regional qualification, geographical location and traditional or conference scheduling patterns permit; u Recognizes the need to "balance" the role of the athletics program to serve both the campus (participants, student body, faculty-staff) and the general public (community, area, state); u Believes in offering opportunity for participation in intercollegiate athletics by awarding athletically related financial aid to its student-athletes; u Believes that institutional control is a fundamental principle that supports the educational mission of a Division II institution and assumes presidential involvement and commitment. All funds supporting athletics should be controlled by the institution. The emphasis for an athletics department should be to operate within an institutionally approved budget, and compliance with and self-enforcement of NCAA regulations is an expectation of membership; and u Believes that all members of Division II should commit themselves to this philosophy and to the regulations and programs of Division II.

Interviews

All interviews should be setup through the sports information office. RSU head coaches are available throughout the week, mainly in the morning. Student-athletes are also available for interviews, typically right before or after practice. Most Hillcat teams practice between 3:00 p.m and 5:00 p.m. during the week. Credentials Request for credentials to athletic events should be made at least 48 hours in advance of the event and directed to the sports information office. Spouses, dates, children and non-working media will not be given a pass or assigned a seat on press row. RSU does not provide parking passes to the media.

Style Guidelines u When making a proper name ending in s possessive, DO NOT add an s: i.e. Coach Blevins’, NOT Coach Blevins’s. u In athletic media communications and publications, DO NOT use the term Lady Hillcats or Lady Cats. Hillcats, Cats, Softball Cats, Diamond Cats (baseball), etc. are acceptable. u Refer to the institution as Rogers State on first mention in news releases or other communications about sports events. The words university or college are understood in such releases, and are a commonly accepted practice within athletics.

Gameday Services

Opponents are asked to supply RSU -- either via fax, email or with a link to availability on the web -- with detailed rosters, up-to-date statistics and season scores, for use in our game day notes no later than a day before the event. Visiting media seating is available in the press box at Soldier Field, RSU asks that those requests be made to the Sports Information Department no late than a day in advance. Following a home event, RSU will supply all results to both home and visiting media. What Is A Hillcat?

The university’s official mascot, the “Hillcat,” is a unique blue and red animal that serves as a source of campus pride and provides a visual identity for the university’s Athletic, Student Activities, and other school spirit programs. The Hillcat embodies the enthusiastic, determined and bold spirit of the university’s athletic programs and the pride our students and alumni feel for the institution.

SOCCER COACHES Derek Larkin, Head Coach dlarkin@rsu.edu | 918-343-7995 Shawn Slater, Assistant Coach sslater@rsu.edu | 918-343-7995

The “Hillcat” is a fictitious cousin of the bobcat, which is indigenous to northeast Oklahoma. The “Hillcat” also draws its name from “College Hill,” a traditional nickname for RSU. The university sits atop a hill overlooking the city of Claremore. The name “Hillcat” was conceived independently by a group of RSU students in spring 2005, and approved by the University Mascot Committee, Student Government Association, President, and Administration.

RSU HILLCAT COMPLIANCE What are Boosters permitted to do?

Booster Education for RSU Alumni, Friends & Fans

u Notify coaches about prospects in your area

Rogers State University is responsible for the actions of its coaches, student-athletes and staff, as well as its alumni, boosters and fans. The following information is intended to help educate athletic boosters and organizations, so they can best support RSU athletes without putting the institution or the individual studentathletes at risk. If you have any questions or would like to seek clarification regarding your actions as a supporter of Hillcat athletics, please call the athletic compliance office at 918-343-7988 or email RSU's NCAA Compliance Coordinator, Eddie Jackson at ejackson@rsu.edu.

u Attend athletic contests where prospects compete, but may not contact the prospect or the prospect's relatives u Continue existing friendships with families of prospects, but not attempt to recruit u Participate with prospects in organized institutional community engagement activities when prospects reside within 100-mile radius of location (Effective 8/1/07)

Enrolled Student-Athletes

What contact can Boosters have with currently enrolled studentathletes?

Boosters

What is a booster?

A booster may not provide a student-athlete any benefit or special arrangement that would not be offered to the rest of the general student population. This would include:

You are a Booster or Representative of Athletic Interests, if you: u Have participated in, or ever have been, a member of a booster organization that supports RSU athletics;

u May not entertain student-athletes or their friends or family;

u Have made any financial contribution to the RSU athletic department or any athletic organization of the University;

u May not use the name or picture of an enrolled studentathlete to advertise, recommend, or promote any product or service;

u Have been involved in the recruitment of a prospect or have been asked to assist in the recruitment of a prospective student-athlete;

u May not provide awards or gifts to student-athletes; u May not allow a student-athlete to use a telephone to make free calls, or allow use of a free or discounted auto mobile;

u Have provided or are providing benefits to an enrolled student-athlete or his or her relatives or friends; u Have otherwise been involved in promoting the RSU athletic program;

u May not provide a student-athlete free or reduced cost goods or services;

u Have helped arrange employment for student-athletes;

NOTE: An enrolled student-athlete may be invited to a booster's home for an occasional home-cooked meal, but may not be taken to a restaurant.

u Are a parent or guardian of an enrolled student-athlete; u Are or have ever been a season-ticket holder.

Employment

NOTE: Once someone has been identified as a Booster, they will retain that identity forever.

Recruiting

A student-athlete may be employed so long as compensation is only for work actually performed, at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar work, and the student-athlete was not hired based on athletics ability.

A prospective student-athlete is any person who has begun classes in the ninth grade. A prospective student-athlete remains so even after signing a National Letter of Intent or accepting financial aid and until they report for the first day of classes.

NOTE: Employment may be arranged for a prospect provided the employment does not begin before the completion of the prospect's senior year of high school.

What are Boosters prohibited from doing?

RSU is responsible for the actions of its boosters and booster support groups. Boosters are regulated by the same NCAA rules and regulations placed upon all institutional athletics staff members.

What is a prospective student-athlete?

Institutional Control

u Contacting a prospect in person on or off campus u Writing or telephoning a prospect or member of the prospect's family

Consequences

If a booster provides an impermissible benefit to a prospect, a student-athlete, or their relatives or friends, institutions may be subject to penalties, even if the student-athlete has completed his or her eligibility. A prospect or student-athlete who accepts an impermissible benefit faces the loss of eligibility.

u Making arrangements for the prospect or the prospect's relatives or friends to receive money or financial aid u Providing transportation for a prospect or the prospect's family or friends to visit the campus u Providing free tickets or reduced priced tickets to attend an athletic event to the prospect or the prospect's family or friends u Entertaining coaches of prospects

HILLCAT SOCCER FACILITIES

u Soldier Field is home to Rogers State’s men’s and women’s soccer programs.

SOLDIER FIELD: HOME OF HILLCAT SOCCER Soldier Field, located in the heart of the RSU campus, was originally constructed as a venue for the Oklahoma Military Academy football team. The field has been widened and resurfaced and new digital scoreboards added in both end zones. Soldier Field also features a large press box, lights, a public address system and stadium seating for a great view of the action. Installation of the new artificial field turf began following the conclusion of the 2011 RSU soccer season in November 2011 and was completed in May 2012. The artificial turf surface allows RSU to maximize the availability and functionality of historic Soldier Field. The durability of artificial turf will permit the university to utilize Soldier Field for athletic training and competition, intramural sports, and other student activities and community events. The Hillcat Athletic Complex is home to the RSU soccer and cross country teams. Construction began in October 2011 and was completed prior to the 2012-13 academic year. The 8,986 square-foot building located in the north end zone of Soldier Field, adjacent to Blue Starr Drive. The facility features spacious locker rooms for the men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as the men’s and women’s cross country teams. Coaches’ offices, an athletic training room, and storage areas for athletics and intramurals are located in the central area of the building. The facility also includes permanent concessions and restrooms for patrons and a paved concourse area with sightlines to the field along with an additional scoreboard located on top of the building.
