“I was looking for a university where I would be more than a face in the crowd. At Rogers State University, I’m a member of the Honors Program and the varsity cheerleading squad, all while pursuing my degree in medical/molecular biology. I don’t know for sure where I’ll be ten years from now but I do know I’ll be working in the medical field and my education will have prepared me to be successful. RSU has given me so many opportunities that I would not have gotten at other schools. For that, I’ll always be grateful.”

Letter from the President I am pleased to welcome you to the 2011 season of Hillcats basketball.

RSU student athletes have the opportunity to live in oncampus apartments that opened this fall. Each apartment comes with cable TV, internet access, a kitchen, bathroom, private bedroom, and access to study lounges and recreational facilities.

This is truly an exciting time at Rogers State University, as our institution continues to expand in ways that benefit all of our students, faculty and staff.

Of course, campus improvements also include ongoing projects to update academic buildings and improve classroom resources. Just last year, we celebrated the opening of new Baird Hall which boasts classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery, and a number of other exciting features.

Student athletes at RSU are seizing the opportunity to be a part of something truly unique. They are choosing to embrace the academic and athletic rigors of collegiate athletics, while contending for conference championships and competing in national tournaments. Last year, 31 student athletes representing each of our athletic programs received an RSU bachelor’s degree and that number continues to rise.

I am not only proud of everything RSU offers our student athletes, I am beyond proud of the contribution our student athletes make to RSU. Thank you for joining us to see it happen for a fifth season.

RSU Student athletes have the opportunity to benefit from a monumental period of university growth. During the 2011-2012 academic year, RSU will undertake major renovations at its soccer and baseball/softball complexes. This follows investments made in training and basketball facilities, and the inception of a cross country program.

Dr. Larry Rice

President Rogers State University

Letter from the Athletic Director Both teams enter the 2011-12 campaign ranked in the Top 25 and looking to improve on last year’s triumphs. With all the excitement surrounding our sports and academic programs, I can’t think of a better time to be involved with the Hillcats.

Greetings from the Hill and welcome to the fifth edition of Hillcat Basketball. The RSU men’s and women’s basketball teams have enjoyed tremendous success since their inaugural 2007-08 seasons. Last season was particularly memorable with both teams advancing to the NAIA National Tournament in the same year for the first time ever.

We are very proud of our basketball teams and eager to see what the future holds for these fledging programs. The outpouring of community support has played a huge role in our early success and will remain vital to Hillcat Athletics as we strive to raise the bar once again in 2011-2012. Thank you for all you do in support of the Hillcats!

Coach Justin Barkley’s men’s squad gave us all a thrill by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Big Dance before bowing out in Kansas City. Coach Amy Williams’ women continued their ascent to the top of the Sooner Athletic Conference with 23 wins and a Top 25 national ranking in 2010-11.

About RSU

u The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leading-edge features assoictaed with higher learning today.

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success Story Rogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education. Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earning RSU the title of one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities. RSU is a dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, widely recognized for its high-quality academic programs, distance learning options, and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area. RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technology, environmental conservation, military history, sport management, and game development. Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studies through RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence in its nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a major accomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU. RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with private, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earn college credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders and policymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

About RSU Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees available in their fields from esteemed institutions across the nation, including Princeton University, Duke University and the University of Oklahoma. The university also boasts an Honors Program, which provides an atmosphere where scholars can challenge themselves academically to maximize their college experience through specialized courses, student/faculty joint research projects, and a strong emphasis on service learning in the community. In addition, the President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year scholarship program that fosters personal and professional development, was designed for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities. RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy, South Korea, and Wales through the University's Studies-atLarge Program. The international study programs provide students with opportunities to see the world, learn about other cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, has become the centerpiece of the main campus in Claremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facility combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community. A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus was completed in 2010. The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leading-edge features associated with higher learning today, including classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery, and an outdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days. The University dedicated in September a new student apartment community that doubles the number of students living on the main campus in Claremore. The $11.5 million project will accommodate up to 255 students in a three-level facility, located across the street from the present university apartments. The new 87,118-square-foot complex is located just west of Soldier Field, with a main entrance on Colonel Horne Drive. The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library opened in 2004. The library features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations, and classrooms.

About RSU

u RSU is one of the fastest-growing universities in Oklahoma.

A Brief History of RSU RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus. However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971. Known as the “West Point of the Southwest, OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country. In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station, and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted in 2000. Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs to more than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville and Pryor.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Academic Development The Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete. Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future. The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all athletes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE Programs The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners, and courtesies. Each athlete is given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals. Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more careful decisionmaking. Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

8

Hillcat LIFE Programs Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules. RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches, and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators, and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines, and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

Men’s Basketball Outlook After a remarkable run to the Final Eight at the Buffalo Funds NAIA National Championship a year ago, Head Coach Justin Barkley added 10 newcomers who will join six returners to make up the 2011-12 squad that will boast six seniors and seven juniors.

pleased with Alex Ewings and Joey Twilley. They have both bought into the system and this is their program. I am hoping this will be a big senior season for Joey.” Larry Cox is returning for his final season after playing in 23 contests as a junior. The Byron, Ga. native was a key contributor in the Hillcats run to the NAIA Final Eight. Jeremy Marseille is also returning for his senior campaign and sophomore Jordan Burrell is back after playing in 29 contests for the Hillcats during his freshman season.

“We want to continue to build on the solid foundation that the team from last year and previous teams that RSU has put on the floor set before us,” Barkley said. “I like this team, if we handle our business and continue to improve on and off the floor I think we can have success.”

Newcomers Five of the 10 newcomers have competed at the NCAA Division I level in their collegiate career, while two come from the NCAA Division II level, one is a junior college transfer and two are from the high school ranks. RSU hasn’t seen a recruiting class with such Division I experience since the inaugural class in 2007 featured six Division I transfers.

Returners The Hillcats will turn to a trio of veteran returners to lead the team. Maurice Rutherford returns for his final season on the Hill. The redshirt senior has been with the Hillcats since the inception of athletics in 2007.

“My coaching staff has done an outstanding job with the recruiting class,” Barkley said. “We are really pleased with the guys we brought in this year. I would say about every kid we brought will be leaned on in some capacity. Each player will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact. They are earning their playing time on the practice floor every day. I think we will be able to play deeper into our lineup than we did a year ago and hopefully that is something that will help us down the stretch.”

“Of the six returners, you don’t have to look any further than senior Maurice Rutherford,” Barkley said. “He has been here through some really good teams. He has fought through some adversity with a knee injury but this is his senior year and he will join the team at Christmas due to a semester rule with the NAIA. He has been a constant, day in and day out. Maurice has been a solid kid that you can hang your hat on not only on the court but off the court as well.”

Expectations The Hillcats are looking to finish what they started a year ago. In his second year at the helm of the men’s basketball program, Barkley says the team’s sights are on the Big Dance in Kansas City, Mo. However, to achieve their goal the Hillcats will have to contend in conference play.

Coach Barkley is also turning to senior Joey Twilley and junior Alex Ewings to provide leadership to the team. “This is a big year for a lot of guys,” Barkley said. “I have been extremely

u The Hillcats set their sights on a trip to the Big Dance in Kansas City, Mo.

“We are going to have to be mature very early,” Barkley said. “RSU has had success in a short amount of time and we are going to get everyone’s best shot. We have to come ready to go every single night. Right now we have such a new team with a lot of new faces and it is going to take time for our chemistry to come together. I think once we learn and build trust in one another we will have some opportunities to do things that not only the players can be proud of but also the university and community as well.” The climb to the top won’t be quite as steep as it was a year ago as RSU was picked just outside of the Top 10, coming in at No. 11 in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Hillcats were slated second in the Sooner Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. “Being ranked early is primarily based on the success we have had in the past as a program,” Barkley said. “It is definitely nice of our peers to think of us this highly but we really have to prove on the court. The SAC is easily considered one of the best small college conferences across the country. There are no nights off and we are going to get tested in all 22 games. It's not where you start but where you finish.”

the NAIA National Tournament and achieved a No. 1 national ranking in 2008-09. RSU notched its third straight 20-win season and reached the finals of SAC Postseason Tournament for the second straight year in 2009-10. “We are excited to start a new chapter in Hillcat basketball,” said then RSU Athletic Director Wren Baker. “Justin Barkley is the perfect fit to lead us into the future. He is a knowledgeable coach, proven recruiter and hard worker. Most of all he will be a good role model and leader of men.”

In his first season at the helm, Barkley led the Hillcats to their fourth consecutive 20-win season. He also led the program on a memorable second half of the season winning 17 of 23 games as RSU streaked to the NAIA Final Eight and finished with a record of 22-12.

Barkley began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Coach Larry Gipson at Northeastern State University following a storied playing career. He later spent two seasons as an assistant at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, where he helped the Norsemen to a 27-9 record and their first national tournament appearance in 16 years.

Barkley, who served as the Hillcats’ assistant coach the previous two seasons, is the third head coach in the brief history of the program. “This is an opportunity I’ve always dreamed about,” Barkley said at the time of his hiring. “I’m ecstatic to be the head coach at Rogers State, but I know that there is no time to celebrate because there’s a lot of work to be done if we are to continue the tradition of success already in place here.”

Barkley left NEO to return home to the community where his father, Clyde, made the family name synonymous with basketball as the dean of Rogers County hoops for the past three decades. As a player, Justin Barkley led Inola High School to a state championship under the direction of his father in 1998. He continued his playing career at NSU, where he spurred the Redmen to a Division II National Championship in 2003.

Barkley helped guide the Hillcats to a 52-13 record during two years as an assistant. The Hillcats claimed the school’s first Sooner Athletic Conference championship, reached

Since arriving on the Hill, Barkley also has assumed teaching duties in RSU’s Sport Management program. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters Degree in Health and Kinesiology. Barkley and his wife Courtney reside in Claremore.

Kyle Blankenship - Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Kyle Blankenship enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Hillcat Men’s Basketball team. In his first season on the Hill, Blankenship helped RSU to a NAIA Final Eight appearance as the Cats reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth consecutive year. Blankenship came to Rogers State after coaching one season at Lamar State College – Port Arthur. In his lone year as an assistant, Blankenship helped guide the Seahawks to a record-breaking season, including a school-record 20-wins and a second place finish in the South Division of the Texas Eastern Conference (Region XIV). Blankenship is no stranger to NAIA Division I basketball. Prior to working at LSC-PA he spent three seasons as an assistant coach at perennial powerhouse Louisiana State University in Shreveport. Blankenship also played one season at LSUS, finishing his playing career in 2006 for the Pilots. As a player and coach, Blankenship helped the Pilots to a 109-27 overall record, two regular season Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) titles, four consecutive GCAC Tournament championships (2006-2009) and four straight NAIA National Tournament appearances (2006-2009). Blankenship guided the Pilots offense to a record-breaking season and a No. 1 national ranking in his final season as a player in 2005-06. He finished his career at LSUS as the school’s single-season assists leader (199) and single-game assists record holder (14), while leading the nation in assists-to-turnover ratio. Blankenship began his playing career at the University of Tulsa in 2001 where he was a team captain, three-year letter winner and a member of two Western Athletic Conference championship teams that made consecutive appearances in the second round of the NCAA Tournament (2002 and 2003). Blankenship earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from the University of Tulsa in 2006. He is the grandson and nephew of two Hall of Fame Coaches in the State of Oklahoma, Gerald and Bill Blankenship.

Chuck Love - Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Chuck Love enters his first season as assistant coach for the RSU men’s basketball team. Love is no stranger to the Sooner Athletic Conference, as he comes to the Hill after coaching one season at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, and finishing his playing career at Northwestern Oklahoma State. Love played at NWOSU from 2006 to 2008. During his senior campaign, he was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Year. In his junior season, Love aided the Rangers in reaching the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship as they advanced to the round of eight for the first time in program history. Following his playing career at Northwestern Oklahoma State, he spent the 2008-09 season as a graduate assistant for the program and helped guide to Rangers to a NAIA National Tournament appearance. Love began his playing career at Missouri State University- West Plains where he was a two-year letter winner. Prior to coaching at WBU, Love spent one season as a volunteer assistant coach for the varsity men’s basketball team at Alva High School (Okla.). Love earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Sports Science from NWOSU in 2008. He and his wife Charmaine reside in Claremore. They have one son, Chuck Love III (5).

Men’s Basketball Season in Review Rogers State men’s basketball won the biggest game in program history then for good measure went out and won the biggest game in school history two nights later. The two biggest wins in program history came on the Hillcats path to the round of eight in the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Chris Francis closed out a storybook career as one of the first signees to the Hillcat program. The Cleora, Okla., native ended his career with 800 points and became the all-time career record holder for games played, with 123. Francis was one of four recipients of the Pattison Family Foundation Scholarship and recognized as a Champion of Character.

The No. 25 Hillcats defeated No. 5 Texas Wesleyan in the opening round then cruised past No. 22 Carroll College before being bounced from the tournament by No. 3 Mountain State University. RSU advanced to the round of eight in only its second trip to the National Tournament. The beginning of the season however didn’t look as bright for the Hillcats, starting below .500 at 5-6 heading into the first of the New Year. The lone bright spot in the early season may have come against Huston-Tillotson as senior Matt Kellogg put on a record-setting individual performance, scoring 32 points to match Sylvester Spicer’s single-game record.

Deveric Taylor topped the 1,000 career point plateau during the season, becoming the second Hillcat to reach the mark. Taylor finished with 1,079 in his career behind all-time leader Sylvester Spicer, who sits at 1,111. Projected as the seventh place squad by the SAC coaches in the preseason, the Hillcats closed out the season alone in third place. Six players return for the 2011-12 season but the Hillcats will miss five key components of the 2010-11 team that made a run to the NAIA Round of Eight. Rogers State must replace Boyd, Kellogg, Francis, Brandon Mims and Alburey Doss. With a good class of newcomers along with key returners the Cats will look to return to the National Tournament in 2011-12.

With the start of the second semester the Cats were injected with new blood by way of Maurice Rutherford and Larry Cox. Rutherford, returning from an injury suffered a year prior, and Cox, a transfer to the Hill from Salkehatchie Junior College, sparked new energy as RSU opened up on a 6-1 run. The Hillcats closed out the regular season winning 14 of the final 18 games. During the Hillcats course of destruction on the Sooner Athletic Conference, RSU defeated No. 10 Oklahoma Baptist and No. 12 Southern Nazarene during a five day stretch. First-year Head Coach Justin Barkley’s squad finished ranked No. 25 in the nation with a record of 22-12. The 2010-11 campaign marked the fourth consecutive year the Hillcats won 20 games or more. The “Cardiac Cats” won 11 games by five points or less and defeated five Top 25 squads. John Boyd led the Hillcats in both points and rebounds as the senior forward became the new single season scoring king tallying 556 points. The Wagoner, Okla., native pulled in 227 rebounds on the season and finished his career with 807 points. The high flying Hillcat was named to the NAIA All-America Third Team and was a First Team All-Conference selection. Kellogg garnered conference honorable mention recognition averaging 13 points per game. The senior guard started all 34 games and shot 38 percent from long distance.

u John Boyd, Matt Kellogg and Chris Francis closed out their Hillcat careers with a run to the NAIA Final Eight in Kansas City, Mo.

Women’s Basketball Outlook With a team full of veteran leadership, the Rogers State women’s basketball squad was able to reach heights never seen before in the program’s four-year history. Last season, the team played for a Sooner Athletic Conference Championship and reached the NAIA National Tournament for the first time.

The Hillcats have some big shoes to fill as five players completed their careers last season. Hunter Peterson closed out her career holding 11 career records. Andrea Miles finished her four-year career as a Hillcat ranking in the top three of 10 different career statistical categories. In two-years of service, Candice Stewart became the career leader in blocks and defensive rebounds.

Head Coach Amy Williams and her staff have added eight players who will join five returners from last season in what will be a junior laden roster for the Hillcats in 2011-12.

Although they only spent one season with the program, Cortney Crockett and Angie Criner made significant contributions. The duo garnered a stack of honors and each played in all 33 contests. Criner was named to the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball All-America third team while Crocket earned All-America honorable mention. Crockett led the team in scoring as she averaged 13.8 points per game and dished a team-high 117 assists along with setting the single-game record for steals and the single-season record for points scored with 454 on the year. Criner averaged 13 points per game, nabbed 63 steals and poured in a single-season record 98 free throws.

Returners The Hillcats will look to Claremore native Logan Froese as a leader on the floor. The junior played in 32 games as a sophomore and has tallied 478 points in her two seasons on the Hill. “Logan Froese is our only returning starter with significant experience,” Williams said. “If she can stay healthy and consistent, we will likely lean on her heavily to lead and educate.” Sasha Barnes and Brittani Smith return for their final season in Hillcats red and blue. Barnes and Smith each played in 33 contests a year ago. Smith posted 181 points and 105 rebounds, helping the Cats to the NAIA National Tournament.

“Last year's team was very special and we are hoping this team will be special in its own right as well,” Williams said. “While it is virtually impossible to replace the experience that Pooh (Andrea Miles) and Hunter brought to our program and the threat of having two All-Americans on the court together, we look for this team to be a well-rounded, high-energy team with several players capable of stepping up on any given night.”

“We have been asking our returners to be great leaders for the eight new players,” Williams said. “We want them to help the newcomers understand our system and the way things are done in our program. We are looking for them to educate the newcomers on the challenges that come with competing in the grueling Sooner Athletic Conference and help them understand the level of mental and physical toughness it takes to win in this league.”

Newcomers As the Hillcats welcome eight newcomers to the squad, senior Gianna Woods stands out with a wealth of experience under her belt. She joins RSU after starting for Henderson State University last season. She averaged 15 points and eight rebounds at HSU. Woods began her career at NCAA Division I Robert Morris University.

Women’s Basketball Outlook

u Hillcat fans will enjoy 18 home dates during the 2011-12 season.

“Gianna Woods transfers in as a senior and has some strong college playing experience,” Williams said. “She is a good athlete with high potential to make an impact for us this season.” Ariani Silva, Leah Smith and Sierra Cornwell will also look to make an instant impact on the court this season. Silva played two seasons at Cowley College where she was named to the All-Jayhawk East Conference team and earned first team allregion and third team all-american honors. Smith joins the Hillcats after an impressive two year career at Penn Valley Community College. She was a two-time Co-MVP at Penn Valley and averaged 18 points, three assists, two rebounds and three steals last season as a sophomore. Cornwell joins RSU after spending the previous two seasons at Connors State College where she earned second team all-conference honors the previous two seasons. She averaged eight steals as a sophomore and helped lead CSC to a conference championship. “Ariani Silva was a junior college All-American at Cowley County Community College last year and is a tough and talented player that we hope will make an immediate impact with the loss of several guards from last year,” Williams said. “Leah Smith is a very capable scorer and Sierra Cornwell can affect the game with her defensive presence.”

Expectations The Hillcats compiled a program best 23-win season a year ago and although there are several new faces in the program, the coaching staff hopes to see their young team flourish over the course of the season. “It is difficult to place expectations on a team that has more newcomers than returners,” Williams said. “I am still very uncertain how well this team will come together, but there is the potential for our team to accomplish some great things.”

Amy Williams - Head Women’s Basketball Coach Amy Williams begins her fifth season at the helm of Hillcats women’s basketball program.

At Tulsa, Williams helped the Golden Hurricane claim its first Conference-USA regular season and tournament championships in 2006. The Hurricane also earned its first ever trip to the NCAA tournament and logged its first win in the field of 64, finishing the season with an impressive 26-6 record.

Williams was named the first head women’s basketball coach at Rogers State University in March of 2007. In just four seasons she has built a winning program at RSU. She led the Hillcats to a 13-18 record and a seventh-place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference in its first year of competition. A year later, RSU posted 18 victories and finished sixth in the league, narrowly missing out on its first national tournament appearance. In 2009-10, she led the Hillcats to a record of 21-11 and their first postseason victory. RSU knocked off four nationally-ranked opponents and appeared in the Top 25 for the first time in 2009-10.

Before joining TU, Williams served as the top assistant at Oklahoma State from 2001-2005. She compiled a number of accolades as the recruiting coordinator at OSU, including being named the 11th ranked recruiting coordinator in the nation based on impact to program and signing the Big XII Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2003. After graduating from Nebraska, Williams joined the University of Nebraska-Kearney staff as a graduate assistant. After obtaining a Master of Arts in Education from UNK, she accepted her first full-time coaching position as an assistant at the University of TexasSan Antonio.

Last season, Williams led the Hillcats to their first ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. RSU also reached the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship game for the first time. In only four years at RSU, Williams has coached three AllAmericans and holds a home winning percentage of .646 at the Claremore Expo. Williams joined the Hillcats after successful coaching stints as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at the University of Tulsa and Oklahoma State University. She previously worked as an assistant at the University of Texas-San Antonio and was a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

He serves as recruiting and scouting coordinator and handles non-conference scheduling. Cope earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Black Hills State and a Masters of Health and Physical Education from Northern State. In addition to his coaching duties, he currently teaches a First Aid class in the Health and Sciences department at RSU.

Tandem Mays - Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Tandem Mays begins her fourth season at RSU after joining the basketball staff in August 2008. She also led Fort Smith Northside High School to back-to-back state titles as a prep. RSU marks the first coaching stint for Mays after interning with the Tulsa women’s basketball program during her senior year. The Fort Smith, Ark., native graduated from TU with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. At RSU, Mays is involved with on the court coaching, recruiting and scouting and works primarily with guards during skill development.

Women’s Basketball Season in Review The 2010-11 Rogers State women’s basketball team reached territory never seen in the program’s four-year history. Head Coach Amy Williams’ squad competed in the NAIA National Tournament for the first time, made its first appearance in the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship game and defeated the No. 2 team in the nation, while tallying the most wins in program history.

Three Hillcat women earned all-conference honors as junior Angie Criner was named Newcomer of the Year along with receiving first team recognition. Crockett was named to the second team while Stewart garnered honorable mention. After being predicted seventh in the conference in the preseason by the league coaches, the Hillcat women finished alone in fourth place in the SAC.

A 23-10 record was highlighted with a trio of victories over nationally-ranked teams. A homecoming victory over then No. 15 Langston University, 75-68 got the season going right. RSU defeated No. 2 Oklahoma City on a neutral site, the University of Tulsa’s Reynolds Center due to wintry weather, 73-70 for the biggest win in program history. The Hillcats then toppled No. 22 Lubbock Christian in the final regular season game, 80-75, and gave the Lady Chaparrals their first loss at home all season.

Five players return for the 2011-12 campaign as RSU lost four players that were a part of a senior class that built the program to the level it stands at today. Joined by key newcomers and a strong returning class, the Hillcats will look to return to the NAIA National Tournament in 2012.

The Hillcat women opened the season 7-4 with close losses to Langston, Northwestern Oklahoma State and John Brown University. A loss to Oklahoma City opened the start of the 2011 calendar year but the Hillcats closed out the regular season on a 13-3 run. The lone losses came to Wayland Baptist and Southern Nazarene twice during the stretch. RSU avenged two earlier losses to John Brown by knocking off the Golden Eagles in the opening round of the SAC tournament, 60-55. Oklahoma Baptist was next on the Cats path to a title and didn’t stand in the way as RSU won 74-59. Southern Nazarene met the Hillcats in the title game and once again was too much for the ladies from Claremore, as the Crimson Storm was victorious 52-48. In the NAIA National Tournament the Hillcats controlled the opening 33 minutes but Westminster College was able to fight back as RSU had one of its worst shooting nights of the season. Hitting 33 percent from the field and connecting on just one 3-pointer, the Cats were equally as bad at the charity stripe making just 9-of-19. Four seniors completed their careers on the Hill, including two that had spent all four years in Hillcats red and blue. Hunter Peterson closed out her career holding 11 career records. The Jenks, Okla., native became the first member of the 1,000 point club and played 128 games in her career after being one of the first signees to the program. Andrea Miles closed out here four-year career as a Hillcat ranking in the top three of 10 different career statistical categories. In two years of service, Candice Stewart became the career leader in blocks and defensive rebounds. Cortney Crockett came to the Hill transferring from Delaware State and left a lasting mark on the program in just one year.

u The Hillcats attained a national tournament berth for the first time in 2011.

RSU Traditions Hillcat The university’s official mascot, the “Hillcat,” is a unique blue and red animal that serves as a source of campus pride and provides a visual identity for the university’s Athletics, Student Activities, and other school spirit programs. The “Hillcat” embodies the enthusiastic, determined and bold spirit of the university’s athletic programs and the pride our students and alumni feel for the institution. It is a fictitious cousin of the bobcat, which is indigenous to northeast Oklahoma. The mascot also draws its name from “College Hill,” a traditional nickname for RSU. The university sits atop a hill overlooking the city of Claremore. The name was conceived independently by a group of RSU students in spring 2005, and approved by the University Mascot Committee, Student Government Association, President, and Administration. The mascot was developed and officially unveiled to the campus in 2005 by RSUPR – the university’s Office of Public Relations – with the assistance of SME Branding of New York, N.Y.

Fight Song Hillcats of RSU Standing tall in Red and Blue We will prevail We refuse to fail Because our spirit's great We wear our colors proudly On our way to victory Go Rogers State!!! Lyrics by Yvonne Pace Music by Clarence Woods/arr. Weller

Alma Mater Rise above the Claremore valley Camelot to view, Stands our gracious alma mater Thrusting t’ward the blue.

u Hunter the hillcat rsu mascot

Lift the chorus, speed it onward For the Red and Blue, Hail to thee our alma mater Hail to R-S-U!

RSU Traditions Fear the Claw Not long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball was introduced at RSU, the home court at the Claremore Expo Center quickly gained a reputation as a formidable venue for opponents. As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herself on the free throw line, the crowd at the Expo Center extends one arm skyward and makes the sign of the claw with their fists. If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the manner of the scratch of a ferocious wild cat. As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a free throw, the rowdy RSU student section has been known to intimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’s fortitude, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

u “Fear the Claw” is well known by RSU students, home team fans, visiting teams and their fans.

Homecoming Week The university celebrated the first-ever Homecoming during the first week of November 2007, during the first Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball games. At RSU, Homecoming is quickly becoming a campuswide tradition. A bonfire is typically held the night before the big games in the open area north of the University Village A student apartments. A “Paint the Paw” spirit competition is held during Homecoming Week, in which students and staff members compete to show their Hillcat pride.

u The tradition of the Homecoming court at RSU began in 2007.

The Hillcat Hacker Invitational is a fun-filled golf event played amidst the hazards of Rogers State University’s scenic Claremore campus. The game features special nondestructive golf balls and is designed for pros, amateurs and hackers alike. The goal of this event is to generate camaraderie among the university’s friends and alumni, showcase RSU’s beautiful and historic campus and establish an outstanding Hillcat Homecoming tradition. Other events include grocery cart races and spirit board competitons. The Homecoming Tailgate Party, held outside of the Claremore Expo Center, is one of the most popular Homecoming events for students, alumni, and the community. u The Hillcat Hacker Invitational is for pros, amateurs and hackers alike who play among the hazards of RSU’s scenic campus.
