Letter from the President Welcome to another exciting season of Hillcat basketball! As Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past 10 years, RSU has enjoyed dynamic growth across its entire enterprise, such as: • Increasing its student population by 60 percent while still maintaining a personalized attention to service that’s become RSU’s hallmark; • Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry; • Constructing two student apartment communities to provide the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university; • Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and • Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service. RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In only a few short years, our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connection to the community. The university has invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turf installation at Soldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus. We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4 million renovations of the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, but also represents their investment in the quality of life at Rogers State. As the RSU begins its first year as a NCAA Division II candidate, this season marks our last as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations have placed on promoting healthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values for RSU’s programs, and we work daily to impress them upon our student-athletes. We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great season on the pitch. Go Hillcats! Dr. Larry Rice

President Rogers State University

Letter from the Athletic Director Welcome to the sixth season of Hillcat Basketball! Last season both our men’s and women’s programs embarked upon incredible runs to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament and we look forward to all they will accomplish this year. Since the first season of basketball in 2007-08 both programs have had unparalleled success and left fans with great memories. It is a great time to be involved with Hillcat Athletics and we are excited for the future. Coach Justin Barkley’s men’s team returns a number of key players from last year’s 24-win team and will once again bring excitement to the Claremore Expo. Roxanne Long takes over as head coach of a women’s program that returns nine players from the Hillcats deepest run in the NAIA National Tournament. We are proud of the success of our student-athletes on the court but even more proud of them in the classroom as more than 100 former athletes have graduated since the return of athletics to the Hill. Whether it is cheering inside the Claremore Expo, watching on the Hillcat Network or listening to road games on RSU Radio. Your support of Hillcat Basketball doesn’t go unnoticed and is valued in helping build the future of RSU athletics. Ryan Bradley

About RSU

u RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor’s and associate degrees.

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success Story Rogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education. Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earning RSU the title of Oklahoma's fastest-growing regional university A dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, RSU is widely recognized for its high-quality academic programs, distance learning options and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area. RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technology, environmental conservation, military history, sport management and game development. Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studies through RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence in its nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a major accomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU. RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with private, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earn college credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders and policymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

About RSU Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees available in their fields from esteemed institutions across the nation, including Princeton University, Duke University and the University of Oklahoma. The university’s Honors Program provides an atmosphere where scholars can challenge themselves academically to maximize their college experience through specialized courses, student/faculty joint research projects, and a strong emphasis on service learning in the community. The President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year scholarship program that fosters personal and professional development, was designed for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities. RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy and Wales through the University's Studies-at-Large Program. The international study programs provide students with opportunities to see the world, learn about other cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, has become the centerpiece of the main campus in Claremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facility combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community. A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus was completed in 2010. The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leading-edge features associated with higher learning today, including classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery and an outdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days. RSU opened in September 2011 a new student apartment community that doubles the number of students living on the main campus in Claremore. The $11.5 million project accommodates up to 255 students in a three-level facility, located across the street from the present university apartments. The new 87,118-square-foot complex is located just west of Soldier Field. Stratton Taylor Library, which opened in 2004, features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations and classrooms. u Baird Hall features a performance studio, an art gallery and an outdoor classroom for learning on sunny days.

About RSU

u RSU is Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university.

A Brief History of RSU RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus. However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971. Known as the “West Point of the Southwest, OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country. In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaureate level was granted in 2000. Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs to more than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, Pryor and online.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Academic Development The Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete. Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future. The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all athletes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE Programs The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners and courtesies. Each athlete is given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals. Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more careful decision making.

8

Hillcat LIFE Programs Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body. Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules. RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

u Rogers State has annually been recognized as a NAIA Champion of Character since the inception of athletics.

Men’s Basketball Outlook The Rogers State men’s basketball team is coming off back-to-back NAIA National Tournament quarterfinal appearance and its fifth straight 20-win season.

“Kendrell is returning as an All-American and obviously a leader in our program,” Barkley said. “Kendrell is as solid as they come; you pretty much know what you’re getting day in and day out with him on the practice floor, in the classroom, in the community, and in the games. KT amplifies everything it means to be a Hillcat. His work ethic speaks for itself, he is very vocal, and does a great job with his teammates.”

Third-year head coach Justin Barkley returns seven players from last year’s squad, including five players who saw significant action. “We are leaning on our six seniors who have been in our program for a year and had some success,” Barkley said. “One guy in particular who has been here throughout his entire career is Alex Ewings. We are looking to him and our other returners to be leaders.”

Justynn Hammond returns to the Hill after earning SAC honorable mention recognition last season as a junior. He led the Cats in steals and assists as he started 20 of the 31 games he appeared in at point guard. “Our big word with Justynn Hammond this year is consistent,” Barkley said. “We want him to take his game to a new level. I think he has all the physical tools in the world he just needs to put it all together. Justynn has got a bright future and we are trying to utilize him at different positions to keep on the floor a little bit longer this year.”

Returners Three starters return from last season, including the team’s leading scorer, Donald Williams who averaged 14.6 points per game. In his junior season, Williams was named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team after helping lead the Hillcats to the quarterfinals. He was also an AllSAC performer after scoring 481 points in 33 games played as he connected on 41.9 percent of his 3-point attempts.

“Like Justynn, we are looking to utilize Alex Ewings in different areas,” Barkley said. “With our team not as big in size, we have to find ways to get more guards on the floor because of their wingspan and athleticism. Alex has really bought into the university’s program from day one and to see his growth as a basketball player from a freshman to now as a young man and a leader is the reason why coaches keep getting into this business.”

“We are expecting big things from Donald going into his senior campaign,” Barkley said. “I think the last ten to fifteen games last year was what we really envisioned out of Donald when we signed him. He can really shoot the basketball and we’re working on some things to make his game an allaround factor. He is the type of player that turns it up a notch in the bigger settings.” NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Kendrell Thompson returns for his final season at RSU. The Houston, Texas native played in all 33 games, starting in 31 contests. He finished second on the team in points per game, averaging 13.1 in his first season on the Hill.

Men’s Basketball Outlook

u Guard Donald Williams led the Hillcats hitting 41.9 percent from the 3-point range.

Ewings is the lone program player in the senior laden group. The Jenks, Okla. native finished third on the team in 3-point field goal percentage hitting .391 percent while playing in all 33 games last year.

steals per game (45 total). He finished the season averaging six points, three rebounds and two assists per game in his final season with ORU. Over the course of his career he started 37 of his 92 appearances for ORU.

“We’re hoping with the hard work Alex has put in over the course of three and half years that he can put together an exciting senior year. Nobody deserves it more than Alex because this program is important to him.”

“Finding a point guard was one of the main concentrations during recruiting after losing the leadership of Maurice Rutherford, a guy that was in the program from the beginning and graduated last year,” Barkley said. “We were fortunate to bring in Ken who had a standout three-year career at Oral Roberts. We see things every day in Ken that made him a very good Division I basketball player.”

Newcomers Coach Barkley brought in arguably the youngest recruiting class that will make immediate contributions in the short six-year history of the program.

Jon “Bo” Bond is the only junior transfer and played the previous two seasons at Northeastern A&M where he was a team captain as a sophomore, averaging 12.7 points per game. Bond suffered a season-ending knee injury during the fall and will be out for the remainder of the season.

“We were very fortunate that we have a great group of guys returning to work around which definitely helped with recruiting,” Barkley said. “We have recruited some local kids who had standout high school careers that will not only help us now, but also going forward as we prepare for the NCAA Division II transition.”

“Bo Bond, coming from NEO, was someone we were counting on and he just had a bad run of luck,” Barkley said. “He is going to miss the entire season due to ACL surgery. We are excited he is a part of our program and we are looking forward to working with him over the next couple of years.”

The lone senior transfer added to the rosters was Ken Holdman who joins the Cats from Oral Roberts University (Okla.). As a junior for the NCAA Division I Golden Eagles, Holdman ranked seventh in the Summit League with 1.3

13

Men’s Basketball Outlook “This fall has been very unique in terms of some bad luck early on with some bumps and bruises and things you can’t control,” Barkley said. “I think it has allowed some younger guys to step up and fill roles they may not have had to fill at such an early age.”

“Every time I look up our freshman class is in the gym working together and that is a good thing,” Barkley said. “Jonathon is a raw athlete and his best days are still ahead of him. He is the first All-State basketball player from the town of Kellyville and that is kind of a neat experience. Brandon has already demonstrated one of the best work ethics in our program on the court and in the classroom. He is a leader and has a team-first mentality.”

The coaching staff recruited four freshmen from northeastern Oklahoma for the 2012-13 season. “We are very excited about our freshman class,” Barkley said. “We worked hard last year chasing down some kids. A lot of times you do not see the fruits of your labor until a little bit later down the road but this year we are liable to see a couple of these guys step up and play key roles.”

Schedule The men’s basketball team has taken on a tough nonconference schedule in preparation for the grueling rigors of Sooner Athletic Conference play.

Two of the freshmen that Coach Barkley is looking to are Tulsa, Okla. natives JC Hartzler and Ehron Ponds. Hartzler, who comes to RSU following a standout prep career at Union High School, was the Tulsa World’s 2012 Oklahoma State Player of the Year. He was also named Frontier Valley Conference Player of the Year, OCA AllState and Academic All-Conference. He helped lead the Redskins to an undefeated state championship. Ponds join RSU after playing at Tulsa Edison (Okla.) High School. As a senior he was recognized as an Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State member, KTUL News Channel 8 Player of the Week, Tulsa World All-State Honorable Mention and All-Metro Second Team.

“Anyone who follows NAIA basketball and has an appreciation for small college basketball will understand we really did not do ourselves any favors with the non-conference slate we put together,” Barkley said. “We really want to challenge our guys early on and find out what we need to work on.” The game against Evangel will be a rematch of the NAIA National Tournament round of 16 where the Hillcats staged a come-from-behind, 69-63, victory to advance to the quarterfinals. The Hillcats will take on St. Thomas (Texas) and Red River Athletic Conference champions Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at a classic in San Antonio in November. The regular season conference slate begins on Jan. 3 as the Cats travel to USAO in Chickasha, Okla. RSU will take on SAC rival Oklahoma Baptist on Jan. 10 at the Claremore Expo and round out the regular season while celebrating senior night on Feb. 23 against Oklahoma City.

“JC is a guy we hope to see make some contributions,” Barkley said. “We were very fortunate to land him through recruiting battles with several division II schools and he has been a pleasant surprise. JC and Ehron Ponds from Tulsa Edison were both All-Staters. Ehron has come in and worked his tail end off and I am really excited about the future.”

“Yes, it will be very challenging but as I tell our guys we want to be battle tested, we want to be ready if we are going to be able to compete in our conference,” Barkley said. “Our main concern is to try to get better every day. There are so many unknown variables right now with this team with health, new roles, and shifting guys around on the team for me to put a thumb on wins and losses. I like my team I really like going to work with these guys each and every day. ”

Jonathon Buckley and Brandon Brantley complete the freshman class. Buckley joins the Hillcats following a successful prep career at Kellyville (Okla.) High School where as a senior he reached the 1,000 career points mark while averaging 22 points, 8 assists, 15 rebounds, 8.1 blocks and 4 steals. He was named first team allstate, first team Indian all-state and Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association Big 8 Star MVP. Brantley comes to RSU from Tulsa Booker T. Washington (Okla.) High School where he was an Academic All-State selection.

Justin Barkley - Head Men’s Basketball Coach Justin Barkley begins his third season as the head men's basketball coach at Rogers State University after being named to the position on April 28, 2010.

As an assistant, Barkley helped guide the Hillcats to a 5213 record over two years. The Hillcats claimed the school’s first Sooner Athletic Conference championship, reached the NAIA National Tournament and achieved a No. 1 national ranking in 2008-09. RSU notched its third straight 20-win season and reached the finals of SAC Postseason Tournament for the second straight year in 2009-10.

In his first season at the helm, Barkley led the Cats to their fourth consecutive 20 win season. He also led the program on a memorable second half of the season winning 17 of 23 games as RSU streaked to the NAIA Quarterfinals and finished with a record of 22-12. Barkley led the Hillcats to the 2012 NAIA Quarterfinals for the second consecutive season as RSU tallied a 249 record.

Barkley began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Coach Larry Gipson at Northeastern State University following a storied playing career. He later spent two seasons as an assistant at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, where he helped the Norsemen to a 27-9 record and their first national tournament appearance in 16 years. Barkley left NEO to return home to the community where his father, Clyde, made the family name synonymous with basketball as the dean of Rogers County hoops for the past three decades. As a player, Justin Barkley led Inola High School to a state championship under the direction of his father in 1998. He continued his playing career at NSU, where he spurred the Redmen to a Division II National Championship in 2003.

Barkley, who served as the Hillcats’ assistant coach the previous two seasons, is the third head coach in the brief history of the program. “This is an opportunity I’ve always dreamed about,” Barkley said at the time of his hiring. “I’m ecstatic to be the head coach at Rogers State, but I know that there is no time to celebrate because there’s a lot of work to be done if we are to continue the tradition of success already in place here.”

Barkley holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters Degree in Health and Kinesiology.

The seven wins over the ten game stretch didn’t necessarily come easy for RSU. On Jan. 5 a curve ball 3-pointer by Alex Ewings from the right wing with 3.5 seconds remaining extinguished the Stars of Oklahoma City University, 81-79.

The season came to a close at the hands of then-No. 1ranked Shorter (Ga.) 63-60 inside Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The Cats didn’t trail the favorite Hawks till the 7:20 mark in the second stanza and RSU quickly regained the lead, holding it till the final 18 seconds of the game.

Seven days later Kendrell Thompson’s spin move left to free himself from an Oklahoma Christian defender allowed the Houston, Texas native to find Donald Williams cutting left baseline for an easy assist and layup with 1.7 seconds. RSU held on for the 71-69 victory over the Eagles.

Coach Justin Barkley’s squad finished the season ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Postseason Top 25 Poll. The season began with RSU tabbed second in the Sooner Athletic Conference Coaches’ Preseason Poll and No. 11 in the NAIA Coaches’ Preseason Poll as the Cats opened on a 12 game winning streak.

RSU finished the regular season winning just three of its final six games. One of those three wins included yet another nail biter victory over Oklahoma Christian. This time the heroics came from a pair of seniors in Maurice Rutherford and Larry Cox. Thompson’s 3-point attempt was off the mark but Rutherford pulled in the board with 32 seconds remaining.

In an exhibition contest versus NCAA Division I opponent the University of Houston the Cats held the lead at the half 45-42 but eventually fell to the Cougars 90-80. The exhibition displayed the Hillcats ability early in the season.

RSU worked the ball around the perimeter before finding Cox at the top of the key. The Byron, Ga. native drilled the jumper from behind the arc with just seconds remaining and the Cats forced OC into a rushed missed shot as time expired.

RSU put its undefeated record on the line as then-No. 3 ranked and eventual National Runner-Up Oklahoma Baptist came to the Claremore Expo. The match-up pitted the then-No. 6 ranked Cats in a top 10 showdown with the Bison, as OBU handed RSU its first loss of the year in a 79-69 defeat.

Eventual conference tournament champions, Oklahoma Christian upended the Hillcats in the opening round of the SAC Tournament as the Eagles won 81-63 inside Bill George Arena in Siloam Springs, Ark.

2011-2012 Men’s Basketball Season in Review Despite the early exit in the SAC Tournament the Cats moved up one spot in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll entering the NAIA National Championship. With the opening game of the 2012 Buffalo Funds NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship, the Hillcats topped Tougaloo College 62-57. RSU faced Evangel (Mo.) in the second round coming back against the Crusaders to win 69-63 to advance to the quarterfinals for the second time in program history and second consecutive appearance.

Seven players are set to return for the 2012-13 season including five players that saw significant time in the 2011-12 campaign. Five Hillcats including Rutherford, Joey Twilley, Jeremy Marseille, Meneptha Darden and Cox closed out their careers in a Rogers State jersey as the seniors’ collegiate careers came to an end.

Newcomer Kendrell Thompson was impressive in his first season with the Hillcats after transferring from Sam Houston State. The Houston, Texas native was named to the NAIA 2012 Division Men’s Basketball All-America honorable mention team and was honored as a first team selection to the All-Sooner Athletic Conference team. The junior guard played in 33 games for the Hillcats, starting in 31 contests, averaging 13.1 points per game. He connected on 41.5 percent from long distance and made 47.5 percent from the field. Fellow newcomer Donald Williams, an Ole Miss transfer, was selected to the 2012 Buffalo Funds – NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship AllTournament Team. The Baton Rouge, La. native averaged a team-high 16.7 points per game in the tournament including a 23 point effort versus Evangel (Mo.) in the second round, hitting four 3-pointers. Williams was named All-Conference Third Team after leading the Cats with 13.9 points per game and ranking No. 18 in the NAIA in 3-point field goal percentage, hitting 42.4 percent. The junior guard broke the school’s single-season record for 3-point field goals made as he hit 90 treys in his first year on the Hill. Senior Larry Cox and juniors Kenny Edwards and Justynn Hammond were honorable mention all-conference selections. Senior Maurice Rutherford, the programs first ever player, closed out his career winning the Pattison Family Foundation Scholarship, a $2,000 scholarship given to five student-athletes at the 2012 Buffalo Funds – NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship that excel both on and off the court. Rutherford, a native of Broken Bow, Okla. was the first player to sign with the Rogers State basketball program and helped lead RSU to a 20win season in all five years of his career and three National Tournament appearances. He closed his career as the career record holder in assists and offensive rebounds.

u Maurice Rutherford closed out his career on the Hill with his third National Tournament appearance.

u The Hillcats are 68-21 against current Sooner Athletic Conference opponents over the last five years.

37

Women’s Basketball Outlook Logan Froese closed out last season averaging nearly 20 points per game in the NAIA National Tournament including a career high 21 points in the opening round game. The Claremore, Okla. native will look to build upon that showing on the national stage in her senior season.

For the first time in the program’s short six year history, Rogers State women’s basketball has a new head coach. Roxanne Long takes the reigns of a program coming off its deepest run in the NAIA National Championship as the Hillcats finished the season in the quarterfinals in Frankfort, Kentucky.

Coach Long added to that thought, “Logan has been a key player in the program for a long time. She has phenomenal skills and great court sense and just has that x-factor, if you will, to make things run smoothly.”

Former head coach Amy Williams built the program from the ground up and departed the Hill over the summer for the University of South Dakota as the head women’s basketball coach of the Yotes. In comes Long who looks to push the program to the finish line in RSU’s final season in the NAIA and her expectations are high for the Hillcats this season.

NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Sierra Cornwell returns after setting the RSU single-season steals record with 117 as a junior while picking up Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team honors. The Preston, Okla. native has shown her ability to her head coach early as well.

“My expectations are extremely high but I say that with caution because it takes so much to put together a run like that,” said the Hillcats first year head coach. “I have all the respect for that quarterfinal run they were able to put together last year but I also know we can much improve upon a fourth place finish. We can do better than that in the Sooner Athletic Conference. We’ll see how it goes and there are so many factors that have to come together to put a deep run together.”

“There’s actually a spot within the system called the pirate that is pretty m u c h designed for Sierra. She is all over the basketball and the ball handler, full court 40 minutes or however many minutes she can sustain in there,” explained coach Long. “She has the best knack I have ever seen for getting the basketball and in her hands.”

In the first five years of the program the Hillcats have never finished better than fourth in the regular season of the SAC schedule. The deepest run for RSU in the postseason conference tournament came in 2010-11 as the Hillcats claimed the SAC runner-up trophy, losing to Southern Nazarene in the tournament championship. Long has numerous reasons to feel optimistic of the upcoming season as the Hillcats return nine players from last year’s NAIA National Tournament quarterfinal run.

Returners Five of the Hillcats nine returners are seniors this season and have coach Long excited for what can be done by this senior class. “There is a really nice senior class. So far this season they look to be right on track to have another great year,” the Cats head coach said. “With it being their senior year they’ll really know their stuff and feel comfortable in the offense.”

The Hillcats top 3-point shooters Leah Smith and Ariani Silva both return after hitting nearly 35-percent or better from behind the arc last year. Smith averaged 12.3 points per game while Silva averaged 8.9 points, both as juniors.

Women’s Basketball Outlook

u Claremore, Okla. native Logan Froese returns for her fourth and final season with the Hillcats.

“Ariani and Leah can flat out score and with it being their second year here and their senior year it should be exciting to watch their progress because they can put the ball in the hoop,” said Long.

Oologah, Okla. native Taylor Jeffs played in 20 of the Cats 34 games last year, hitting 27.3 percent from behind the 3-point stripe. Long expects to see the junior guard be even more aggressive this year with her shot.

Long has been happy with the progress made by Rician Walker and Larielle Giles in the off-season. Walker and Giles played in 32 of the Hillcats 34 games last season, averaging over ten minutes of playing time.

A pair of sophomores that were limited due to injury last year return in Ally Warren and Jade Hardy. Long likes the feistiness of Warren and toughness the Claremore, Okla. native brings to the court. Hardy looks to recover strong from an ACL injury suffered last season.

“Rician is a senior that in my opinion after watching a lot of film and seeing a little bit this fall has made a huge leap between last year and this year. She looks to be really quick and really sees how to get through gaps even with being small in size,” Long said of the second year point guard. “I really expect huge things from her this year with even more production. From what I can tell, she looks to have a great senior year ahead of her.”

Newcomers Three junior college and one NCAA Division II transfers join the Hillcats for the upcoming season.

Giles was a consistent post player in spot duty last year as she averaged 2.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Kelby Fritz joins RSU from NCAA Division II Missouri Southern State University where she started 20 of the Lady Lions 28 games last season. The Vinita, Okla. native, averaged 9.5 points per game while hitting 85-percent from the free throw stripe as a junior last year. She was second on MSSU in assists with 68 last season.

Coach Long talked about the Tulsa Union (Okla.) High School product, “Larielle is solid as can be. She does everything in a way that makes all of her teammates look good. She can really take care of all those ‘unseen by the stands’ kind of stats. She’s a coach’s dream in that way as she’s going to take care of all the little things every time.”

“Kelby is a solid player that can really score and pass. She has great court awareness and great court memorization as far as she knows the offensive and defensive scheme as well as a coach does,” Long said of the senior transfer from MSSU. “She’s truly the coach on the floor so she should help out in that point guard role as a leader.”

Women’s Basketball Outlook Providing depth in the post will be Clarissa Cannon and Adrianna Leatherbury as both stand six feet tall and transfer to the Hill from the junior college ranks.

“That could prove beneficial down the line but it also means we’ll have to handle some lumps early. We have to stay strong and confident while using it as a learning tool. Hopefully that high level competition will make it to where we can put together an incredible conference performance from top to bottom.”

“Clarissa is a pure athlete that can run and jump. She has a positive work ethic and is going to be real productive and is a great teammate,” described Long of the Las Vegas, Nevada native.

Last season RSU finished fourth in the Sooner Athletic Conference but coach Long looks to move the Cats up the conference rankings.

Cannon averaged five points and five rebounds last season as a sophomore at Cowley College. As a freshman she was a first team All-Jayhawk Conference selection helping the Tigers to a 22-10 season and Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division Championship. Leatherbury joins RSU from New Mexico Junior College as she totaled 10 blocks in 30 games played as a sophomore.

“I think everyone knows that this is the best conference in the country and improving upon that fourth place finish is a lofty goal but I think it’s a good one,” said Long. “I think we should create a goal for ourselves to see if we can move up from that rank. Since it is the toughest conference in the country if you can seat yourself pretty high in the conference that means you’re in good shape nationally.”

“Adrianna provides much needed depth in the post spot,” Long said of Leatherbury. “Adrianna is going to help round out some depth and provide some good minutes so we can stay fresh and stay strong in the spot from top to bottom.” Rounding out the Hillcats’ recruiting class is Daryn Miller a Coffeyville Junior College transfer that averaged eight points per game while connecting on 30.4 percent from the 3-point line. Miller plans to redshirt during the 2012-13 campaign. “Daryn provides a lot of athleticism, she’s fast and can get some good speed vertically from end line to end line and she’s an outside shooter,” the Hillcats head coach said of Miller. After a third consecutive 20-plus win season and a quarterfinal finish in the NAIA National Tournament, expectations are high for the Hillcats as they return nine players and are senior laden. “We’re going to do everything in our power to get another season that everyone can be proud of but also finish these seniors’ careers off right. I think all of these players deserve a last go-around that is something special,” Long said in regards to RSU’s 2012-13 expectations.

Schedule The schedule doesn’t look easy on paper for the Hillcats as it is loaded with teams that annually reach the NAIA National Tournament and a number of quality NCAA Division II teams. Langston University, Northwestern Oklahoma State, Arkansas-Fort Smith, Northwest Missouri State and Westminster College highlight the non-conference slate for coach Long’s first season leading the Hillcats. u Coach Roxanne Long has been impressed with the progress of senior guard Rician Walker.

“The schedule is extremely tough, probably the toughest schedule in Rogers State history if I was to guess,” said Long.

Roxanne Long - Head Women’s Basketball Coach Rogers State University introduced Roxanne Long as its new head women’s basketball coach at a press conference on RSU’s Claremore campus on Monday, July 2.

Prior to her stint at TLU, Long spent eight years as a varsity head coach at the high school ranks in Texas. She spent five years (2003-2008) at Central High School in Keller, Texas where she was a Texas Basketball Coaches finalist for the State of Texas Coach of the Year. She was named district Coach of the Year in 2007. The team reached the postseason on three occasions and enjoyed two 20-win seasons. From 2000-2003, Long was the varsity head coach at Diamond Hill High School in Fort Worth, Texas where she turned a 0-25 program around and led the team to its first playoff appearance. She was also named district coach of the year.

Long, who has served as the head women’s basketball coach at Texas Lutheran University for the past four years, becomes the second head coach over the RSU women’s basketball program. She replaces Amy Williams who spent five years at the helm of the Hillcat women’s basketball program and left RSU to become the head coach at the University of South Dakota, a NCAA Division I program.

Long is no stranger to the state of Oklahoma. She ignited her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Oral Roberts University under Jerry Finkbeiner from 1998-2000. While she was on the bench with the Golden Eagles the team won a conference championship and garnered a NCAA Tournament berth.

“I am extremely grateful and excited for the opportunity to coach this first class program,” Long said. “I am looking forward to continuing to build a culture of excellence at Rogers State.”

Long spent five years (1993-1998) at the University of Oklahoma as a shooting guard. She was a three-year starter for the Sooners and the team captain during her junior and senior campaigns. She ranks in the top-10 in the OU record book in minutes played and 3-point field goals made. She received the Conference Medal Award, the Sooners’ Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year and the Jay Myer Award.

Long revived a women’s basketball program at TLU that went 1-49 in the two years prior to her appointment. In her first season with the Bulldogs, the team registered a 7-18 record, marking the 11th-best turn-around in NCAA Division III in 20082009. One season later, her team posted its first winning record in school history as a member of the American Southwest Conference. She was named ASC CoCoach of the Year in 2009 and produced the best winning percentage of any TLU women’s basketball coach in the NCAA Division III era.

Long excelled not only on the court, but also in the classroom as she was named First Team Academic All Big 8 and Academic All Big 12. Women’s Basketball Season in Review After the most successful season in program history, the Rogers State women’s basketball team tallied its third consecutive 20-plus win season while embarking on its deepest run in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship. The season opened with RSU slated No. 24 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll and fourth in the Sooner Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. Eight new faces paired with one returning starter and four reserves came together to give former head coach Amy Williams her first national tournament postseason victory. Williams’ squad required overtime in the opening round versus the University of the Cumberlands as the Cats topped the No. 6-ranked Patriots, 80-73. In the second round, RSU dropped No. 20-ranked Shorter (Ga.) 64-59. Senior point guard Sasha Barnes was spot on with a 3-pointer from the right wing as the shot clock expired and just 18 seconds remaining to put the game at its final tally of 64-59. The victory planted the Hillcat women in the NAIA Round of Eight for the first time in program history. In the quarterfinals, the Cats faced No. 19-ranked Georgetown College. The Tigers proved to be too much for the Cats as Georgetown outscored RSU 12-6 to close out the game. RSU fell 70-63 despite out-rebounding the Tigers 42-37 as Gianna Woods pulled in 14 boards. Logan Froese led the Hillcats with a career high 21 points for the second time in the tournament. The Claremore, Okla. native earned second team 2012 NAIA All-Tournament team recognition following the National Championship game in the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky. Froese averaged nearly 20 points per game in her three games for the Hillcats during the tournament. The season began with an exhibition contest at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla. as RSU faced NCAA Division I opponent University of Tulsa as the Cats fell 54-50 to the Golden Hurricane. RSU began the regular season with wins over MidAmerica Nazarene and Baker University at the Baker Wildcat Classic before falling to Langston University on the road and NAIA Divison II Friends University on Homecoming in the Claremore Expo.

u Logan Froese averaged nearly 20 points in RSU’s three NAIA National Tournament games.

The national ranking didn’t last long after St. Gregory’s, Oklahoma Baptist and Oklahoma City handed the Hillcats their longest losing streak of the season at three games.

RSU Hillcat Sports Information Services Interviews

The “Hillcat” was developed and officially unveiled to the campus in 2005 by RSUPR – the university’s Office of Public Relations – with the assistance of SME Branding of New York, N.Y.

All interviews should be setup through the sports information office. RSU head coaches are available throughout the week, mainly in the morning. Student-athletes are also available for interviews, typically right before or after practice. Most Hillcat teams practice between 3:00 p.m and 5:00 p.m. during the week. Credentials Request for credentials to athletic events should be made at least 48 hours in advance of the event and directed to the sports information office. Spouses, dates, children and non-working media will not be given a pass or assigned a seat on press row. RSU does not provide parking passes to the media.

Style Guidelines u When making a proper name ending in s possessive, DO NOT add an s: i.e. Coach Dicus’, NOT Coach Dicus’s. u In athletic media communications and publications, DO NOT use the term Lady Hillcats or Lady Cats. Hillcats, Cats, Softball Cats, Diamond Cats (baseball), etc. are acceptable. u Refer to the institution as Rogers State on first mention in news releases or other communications about sports events. The words university or college are understood in such releases, and are a commonly accepted practice within athletics.

Gameday Services RSU’s sports information office produces media guides for most sports and game notes for men’s and women’s basketball games, which include rosters, schedules and statistical leaders. Opponents are asked to supply RSU -- either via fax, email or with a link to availability on the web -- with detailed rosters, upto-date statistics and season scores, for use in our game day notes no later than a day before the event. Following a home event, RSU will supply all results to both home and visiting media. RSU always contacts the Claremore Progress, Tulsa World, Daily Oklahoman, and local TV and sports/news radio stations with scores and statistics (where applicable).

Local Media List RSU will email results and statistics to opponent media. Please contact the sports information office at least a day in advance of a game with media phone and fax numbers. Opposing teams are also free to use phone and fax machines in the athletic office or sports information office. Please ask the sports information director or an athletic staff member for assistance.

Statistical Services RSU uses the Dakstats statistics programs for men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. RSU offers live webcasts for men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, baseball and softball via the NAIA/Daktronics website. RSU will supply visiting teams and media with complete statistics immediately following the game. Postgame, RSU will e-mail dakstats game files to opposing SIDs. A box score of the event will also accompany the email in attachment form. If coaches or opposing SIDs would like dakfiles immediately after the game, please have a jump drive available and we will gladly take care of it.

What Is A Hillcat? The university’s official mascot, the “Hillcat,” is a unique blue and red animal that serves as a source of campus pride and provides a visual identity for the university’s Athletic, Student Activities, and other school spirit programs. The Hillcat embodies the enthusiastic, determined and bold spirit of the university’s athletic programs and the pride our students and alumni feel for the institution. The “Hillcat” is a fictitious cousin of the bobcat, which is indigenous to northeast Oklahoma. The “Hillcat” also draws its name from “College Hill,” a traditional nickname for RSU. The university sits atop a hill overlooking the city of Claremore.

Social Media Twitter – twitter.com/RSUHillcats Facebook – facebook.com/RSUHillcatAthletics YouTube - youtube.com/RSUHillcatAthletics

The name “Hillcat” was conceived independently by a group of RSU students in spring 2005, and approved by the University Mascot Committee, Student Government Association, President, and Administration.

Employment A student-athlete may be employed so long as compensation is only for work actually performed, at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar work, and the student-athlete was not hired based on athletic ability.

Recruiting What is a prospective student-athlete? A prospective student-athlete is any person who has begun classes in the ninth grade. A prospective student-athlete remains so even after signing a National Letter of Intent or accepting financial aid and until they report for the first day of classes.

NOTE: Employment may be arranged for a prospect provided the employment does not begin before the completion of the prospect's senior year of high school.

What are Boosters prohibited from doing? u Contacting a prospect in person on or off campus u Writing or telephoning a prospect or member of the prospect's family

Consequences If a booster provides an impermissible benefit to a prospect, a student-athlete, or their relatives or friends, institutions may be subject to penalties, even if the student-athlete has completed his or her eligibility. A prospect or student-athlete who accepts an impermissible benefit faces the loss of eligibility.

RSU Traditions Fear the Claw

Hillcat

Not long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball was introduced at RSU, the home court at the Claremore Expo Center quickly gained a reputation as a formidable venue for opponents.

The university’s official mascot, the “Hillcat,” is a unique blue and red animal that serves as a source of campus pride and provides a visual identity for the university’s Athletics, Student Activities, and other school spirit programs.

As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herself on the free throw line, the crowd at the Expo Center extends one arm skyward and makes the sign of the claw with their fists.

The “Hillcat” embodies the enthusiastic, determined and bold spirit of the university’s athletic programs and the pride our students and alumni feel for the institution.

If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the manner of the scratch of a ferocious wild cat.

It is a fictitious cousin of the bobcat, which is indigenous to northeast Oklahoma.

As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a free throw, the rowdy RSU student section has been known to intimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’s fortitude, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

The mascot also draws its name from “College Hill,” a traditional nickname for RSU. The university sits atop a hill overlooking the city of Claremore. The name was conceived independently by a group of RSU students in spring 2005, and approved by the University Mascot Committee, Student Government Association, President, and Administration.

Homecoming Week The university celebrated the first-ever Homecoming during the first week of November 2007, during the first Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball games.

The mascot was developed and officially unveiled to the campus in 2005 by RSUPR – the university’s Office of Public Relations – with the assistance of SME Branding of New York, N.Y.

At RSU, Homecoming is a campus-wide tradition. A bonfire is typically held the night before the big games in the open area west of the University Village B student apartments.

Fight Song Hillcats of RSU Standing tall in Red and Blue We will prevail We refuse to fail Because our spirit's great We wear our colors proudly On our way to victory Go Rogers State!!!

A campus office decoration competition is held during Homecoming Week, in which students and staff members compete to show their Hillcat pride. The Hillcat Hacker Invitational is a fun-filled golf event played amidst the hazards of Rogers State University’s scenic Claremore campus. The game features special nondestructive golf balls and is designed for pros, amateurs and hackers alike. The goal of this event is to generate camaraderie among the university’s friends and alumni, showcase RSU’s beautiful and historic campus and establish an outstanding Hillcat Homecoming tradition.

Lyrics by Yvonne Pace Music by Clarence Woods/arr. Weller

Alma Mater Rise above the Claremore valley Camelot to view, Stands our gracious alma mater Thrusting t’ward the blue.

The Slam Dunk Contest and 3-point Shootout has become a yearly tradition held on the Thursday of Homecoming Week. The Homecoming Tailgate Party, held outside of the Claremore Expo Center, is one of the most popular Homecoming events for students, alumni, and the community. For more information, visit www.rsu.edu/homecoming.

Lift the chorus, speed it onward For the Red and Blue, Hail to thee our alma mater Hail to R-S-U!

Building a great school doesnĂŠt end when the brick and mortar is finished. It takes visionary administration, dedicated teachers, involved parents and community partners to keep our schools great. TTCU The Credit Union is proud to be a community partner through its School PrideÂŽ Visa Check Card, contributing over $300,000 to northeast Oklahoma area schools. Each time you make a purchase using your Hillcats card, TTCU makes a donation to your school. And all those donations add up. Just like the bricks in a wall. TTCU and you, building a great school one brick at a time.
