Greetings from the Hill and welcome to the seventh edition of Hillcat Baseball. 2011 proved to be a magical year for the Diamond Cats, culminating in the program’s first Sooner Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the NAIA World Series – Opening Round. The Hillcats are widely recognized as a program on the rise, increasing upon their win total in five of the last six seasons.

We appreciate your interest in our fledging athletic programs and hope you will join us at the ballpark on a regular basis this spring. About RSU Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees available in their fields from esteemed institutions across the nation, including Princeton University, Duke University and the University of Oklahoma. Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, has become the centerpiece of the main campus in Claremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facility combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community. A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus was completed in 2010. The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leading-edge features associated with higher learning today, including classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery and an outdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days. RSU opened in September 2011 a new student apartment community that doubles the number of students living on the main campus in Claremore. The $11.5 million project accommodates up to 255 students in a three-level facility, located across the street from the present university apartments. The new 87,118-square-foot complex is located just west of Soldier Field. Stratton Taylor Library, which opened in 2004, features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations and classrooms.

A Brief History of RSU RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus. However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971. Known as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;West Point of the Southwest,â&#x20AC;? OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country. In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted in 2000. Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs to more than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville and Pryor.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Academic Development The Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete. Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future. The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all athletes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE Programs The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners and courtesies. Each athlete is given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals. Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more careful decisionmaking. Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

Hillcat LIFE Programs Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules. RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

2011 Baseball Season Outlook In 2011, the Hillcats claimed their first Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship and made their first appearance at the NAIA Opening Round. With a 4515 record and a No. 15 final ranking, the RSU baseball team posted its best finish to date. While the Hillcats raised the bar last season, the 18 returners and 23 newcomers have unfinished business to attend to in 2012. They have their eyes set on a trip to the NAIA World Series.

The Hillcats have a pair of junior college transfers who will compete for time behind the plate when Rymel is not catching. Emmanuel De La Cruz and Mackenzie Matthews join the Hillcats from tradition rich junior colleges and will have a chance to earn valuable playing time.

First Base Several players will vie to replace two-year starter Colton West at first base. Cody Campbell is the projected starter after an impressive sophomore campaign. In his first season on The Hill, Campbell broke the RSU single-season record for runs batted in with 66 RBI. He also tied the single-season record for home runs as he blasted 13 on the year. Campbell played in 54 games and started in 51 contests, primarily as the designated hitter.

The Hillcats return five starters from last year’s ball club, including second team all-conference performers Randy Ramirez and Lance Rymel. All five returning starters hit .313 or better a year ago. Head Coach Ron Bradley has added a talented group of newcomers to complement the returners and believes the team is capable of achieving great success in 2012. “We are as talented as we were last year maybe even better,” Bradley said. “The key for us will be winning the close games; it really makes the difference between a good season and a great season. We won 45 games last year and I would like to see us win 50 this year. It’s a lofty goal, but I think it is attainable for this club. I have told our kids one great year is not tradition. Our program is still in the infancy stage and we are continually trying to establish tradition. We need to turn last year into back-to-back years to continue to gain credibility as a top contender.”

“Cody Campbell is penciled in as our starting first baseman. He led us in home runs last year but needs to improve defensively,” Bradley said. “Rymel could also see time at first base when he is resting his legs.” Union High School standout Wade Ambrose and De La Cruz could also see time at first base. “Wade Ambrose will be a utility guy who can play first base or outfield and could serve as our DH,” Bradley said.

Catcher Lance Rymel returns for his final season with the Hillcats. The senior was RSU’s every day starter behind the dish last season and he will assume the role once again in 2012. He registered a .988 fielding percentage, committing just three errors in 258 chances last year. He tallied a .373 batting average with 44 hits, five home runs and nine doubles.

Second Base Coach Bradley will look to Northern Oklahoma Junior College transfer Hector Rivera to replace twoyear starter Jairo Valdez at second base. Rivera received the Rawlings Gold Glove Award®

“Rymel has more experience with our ball club that anyone else as he will be a three-year starter,” Bradley said. “He is a building block for our program. He had an outstanding junior season offensively and defensively. I expect great things out of him this year. I really hope to see him have a good season and have a chance to play at the next level.”

Outfield Although RSU lost NAIA All-America centerfielder Brandt Barnes, the Hillcats return two starters from a season ago and have added a talented group of newcomers. “You can’t replace Brandt Barnes, rarely do you have a player who produces the numbers he had last season,” Bradley said. “Right now we are looking at Eric Baker in centerfield. He started in the outfield at Connors Junior College and served as their leadoff hitter. He is a good runner but still making some adjustments to centerfield, he was a corner guy in junior college.” u Cade McKewon returns to the starting lineup at third base.

Colton Campbell and Keith Poverud will play in the corners for the Diamond Cats. Campbell appeared in 40 games, starting in 34 contests in 2011. He had a .336 batting average, driving in 22 runs on 36 hits with a trio of home runs. Poverud appeared 46 contests and started in 29 of them as a sophomore in 2011. He drove in 22 runs, blasted three home runs and hit seven doubles with a .312 batting average

for the top defensive second baseman in NJCAA Division II. He only made four errors the entire season with a fielding percentage of .978. Freshman Blake Heston and Hamilton Hernandez could also be called upon at second base. “Hector is penciled in as our starting second baseman,” Bradley said. “He is a left-handed hitter and earned a NJCAA DII gold glove.”

“Colton Campbell is penciled in at left field,” Bradley said. “He stared off hot offensively last year and leveled out. We need for him to return to his A-game on offense this season. Keith Poverud has continued to make improvements every season and I look for him to have a big year for us. He is a good leader on and off the field.”

Shortstop Randy Ramirez returns for his senior campaign after starting in 58 of the Hillcats 60 contests last season. As the Hillcats everyday shortstop, he led the team in on base percentage (.511) and holds the single season record for walks with 41. He tallied eight home runs, 26 stolen bases and 13 doubles with a .383 batting average.

Taylor Estes, Alex Cochran, Fyfe and Ambrose will all be in the mix for playing time in the outfield. “Taylor Estes is a good defensive outfielder who will have a chance to play in some late innings defensively,” Bradley said. “Alex Cochran will also see playing time in the late innings defensively. Ambrose and Fyfe could play in the outfield in order to add their bats to the lineup.”

“Randy had a great season and followed it up with an impressive summer,” Bradley said. “To me, he is one of the premiere shortstops in the country. He brings great offense and defensive numbers to the table. His experience will be very valuable to our infield.”

Pitching

Third Base

RSU returns a good group of veteran hurlers but has to replace the likes of Grant Cosby, Matt Sample and Tyler Brown who combined for 16 wins, four saves and just two losses last season.

Senior Cade McKewon returns as the Hillcats starter on the hot corner. He started in 58 of the Hillcats 60 games in 2011. He stole 10 bases and drove in 42 runs while batting .246 on the season. As a mainstay in the Hillcat infield, he compiled a .914 fielding percentage.

“All good clubs are built around their pitching,” Bradley said. “Our pitching staff has allowed us to be a quality team. We lost a couple excellent pitchers from last season. Matt Sample pitched sparingly but all of his innings were quality and valuable. Grant Cosby had an outstanding career and won some big games for our team. Tyler Brown was a valuable part of our ball club and will be deeply missed. ”

“Cade McKewon resumes his role as our starting third baseman,” Bradley said. “Last year he struggled offensively for the first time in his career. I look for Cade to bounce back and have a lot better year offensively. Defensively he is very solid and made some of the nice plays we had last season.”

A pair of southpaw newcomers look to make instant contributions in the starting rotation. Brandon Bargas joins the Hillcats after spending his sophomore season at Eastern Oklahoma College where he registered an 8-5 record with a 3.01 ERA. Shawn Spainhoward is a left handed pitcher from Southeast Missouri State.

The Hillcats will have a host of left-handed relievers to choose from each game. Drew Taylor returns for his senior season after making 16 apperences and tallying a 41 record last season. Senior Jacob Wenaas and Jim Miner also saw valuable innings last season along with junior Casey Cassity.

“Brandon Bargas and Shawn Spainhoward both played at the Division I level and are two guys I have penciled in as starters for us,” Bradley said.

“Drew Taylor has a deceptive side-arm approach; look to see him have a chance to play in every game,” Bradley said. “Jim Miner and Jacob Wenaas were both spot starters and came out of the bullpen last year.”

Senior Tyler Garner finished 2011 with a 6-3 overall record and 3.53 ERA. He fanned 44 batters in 48.1 inning pitched. His season was cut short as he endured Tommy John surgery at the end of the season. However he is recovering quickly and Coach Bradley hopes he will be able to contribute early in the season.

“Mason Marquette is a guy who caught our eye this fall. He could be a surprise coming out of the bullpen. Kyle Deaton will be another guy that will be able to contribute from the left side.“ Coach Bradley still has a couple of question marks as far as right-handed hurlers go. Freshman Joe McGee had an impressive fall. Joining him will be Jeremy Penn, who has twice been drafted and is looking to come back from injury. Right hander TJ Law will compete for time as well.

“We lost Tyler Garner at the end of the season last year and I feel like he was one of our top starters” Bradley said. “He has comeback quickly after surgery and I think he will have a chance to be a key contributor for us if he continues to progress and stay healthy. Garner has quality innings in our program and he will be a leader on our pitching staff as well as a valuable asset on the mound.”

Closers Returners Zach Williams and Freddy Soto will be battling for the closing job. Williams recorded a 1-0 record and tallied a team-best 1.29 ERA during his first season on the Hill. Soto completed the 2010 season with a 2-0-1 record and a 4.63 ERA.

“Our No. 3 starter is up in the air,” Bradley said. “We are looking for someone to step into the role. Could be Garner if he is ready which could come late in the season. Kyle Duncan is also a possibility. He had a good fall and will be looking to compete with returner Eric Faust for that third starting spot on conference weekends.”

“Both Zack and Freddy throw 90-94 MPH and will have a lot of opportunities to earn playing time early in the season. They will be battling to win the closing role.”

2011 Baseball Season Outlook The Schedule The Hillcats will open the season with eight of their first 10 contests on the road. They will also have to hurdle the obstacle of playing at alternate home sites throughout February as facility improvements are completed at the baseball/softball complex. Three teams from the Sooner Athletic Conference competed at the eight-team NAIA World Series last season. The Diamond Cats open their 30-game Sooner Athletic Conference slate on Feb. 14 at Oklahoma Christian. The Cats travel to Plainview, Texas for a three-game series at Wayland Baptist, Feb. 24-25. Bradley’s squad will host World Series runner-up Lubbock Christian in a three-game series on March 2-3. RSU welcomes St. Gregory’s, Northwestern Oklahoma State, USAO and Oklahoma Baptist to Claremore in March. OBU reached the NAIA World Series for the third time in program history last season. The Hillcats will play their remaining nine conference matches in April with the final series coming on April 19 and 21 against Mid-America Christian. Last season’s regular season champion Oklahoma City and OBU will cohost the SAC Tournament May 2-5. “The conference is considered one of the best in the NAIA and the results speak for themselves. If you are able to compete at a high level in our conference you have a shot at competing at the World Series.”

record in 2008 and a fourth-place finish as a first-year member of the prestigious Sooner Athletic Conference. He achieved his 100th collegiate coaching victory in 2009 and has led RSU to four consecutive winning seasons. The 2011 Diamond Cats had the most success in program history going 45-15 and capturing the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. The Cats reached the NAIA National Championship Opening Round and were ranked as high as No. 11 in the NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Poll, marking the first time the Cats had cracked the Top 25 in program history.

He began his collegiate coaching career at RSU in 2004 after compiling one of the most successful high school baseball coaching resumes in Oklahoma history. Most recently, Bradley was named the Oklahoma College Baseball Coach of the Year by his peers in January 2009. His career accomplishments include four state championships in four different classifications (2A, 4A, 5A, 6A), one state runner-up, and eleven regional championships. He tallied nearly 500 career victories in his 21 years as a head coach at the high school level and holds the unique distinction of winning the first baseball state championship at West Fork (Ark.), Claremore (Okla.), and Jenks (Okla.) high schools. Bradley took Claremore to the state championship game three different times and reached at least the semi-final round in all three seasons he coached at Class 6A power Jenks High School.

Bradley’s Hillcats have posted a 179-120 record in six seasons as an NAIA member institution. He and his wife Jill reside in Claremore. They have two grown children; Ryan, Athletic Director at RSU, and Kayla, an elementary school teacher in Lawrence, Kan.

In 2011 Bradley added the first Sooner Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament championship at RSU to his resume. Bradley has been selected Oklahoma Coach of the Year three times by The Daily Oklahoman and Tulsa World. He has also been honored with two National Region Coach of the Year Awards and is a five-time OBCA Coach of the Year. In 1998 he led the Oklahoma Senior Sunbelt team to its first-ever Sunbelt Series Championship. Bradley has also been honored with coaching duties in the Oklahoma AllState game, Sooner State games and numerous other allstar competitions. More than a dozen of Bradley’s former players have been selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft, two of whom have reached the big leagues. Bradley has been a keynote speaker at the state and national level and is highly regarded in the baseball coaching community for his philosophies on hitting and his ability to build championship programs. Bradley laid the foundation for athletics at RSU when he introduced club sports to the campus as the director of physical education in 2004. He later served as interim athletic director and remains instrumental in the development of RSU athletic programs. Bradley guided the Hillcats to their first winning season in 2007 with a 28-23 record. He followed that up with a 35-16

Robert Brown - Assistant Baseball Coach Assistant Coach Robert Brown joined RSU in 2004. He previously served as an assistant coach at Virginiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Radford University, an NCAA Division I school in the Big South Conference. His duties at Radford were primarily pitching, defense and recruiting. Brown also has served as the head coach of the Waynesboro Generals of the Valley League for two seasons. Prior to his work with Waynesboro, Brown served as an assistant coach at Collinsville High School as well as a stint at Oklahoma Junior College in Oklahoma City. Along with his coaching at RSU, Brown enjoys being a clinical speaker and private pitching instructor.

Jimmy Rogers - Assistant Baseball Coach Jimmy Rogers brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from the Major Leagues to the Hillcats. Rogers joined the RSU coaching staff in 2007 and works primarily with the pitching staff. A former big leaguer, he spent two seasons in the majors with the Toronto Blue Jays. Rogers graduated from Tulsa Webster High School in 1985 and was an all-state selection while leading the Warriors to a state championship. He pitched for two seasons at Seminole State College and was drafted by Toronto in the 1986 amateur draft. Rogers lives in Beggs and enjoys giving personal pitching instruction when not working with the Hillcats.

About: In his first season on The Hill, Campbell broke the RSU single-season record for runs batted in with 66 RBI. He also tied the single season record for home runs as he blasted 13 on the year. Campbell played in 54 games and started in 51 contests. He rounded out the season with a .342 batting average and a .696 slugging percentage. Campbell transfered to Rogers State after two seasons at the University of West Florida. After tearing his ACL, Cody was held out of action in 2010 due to the injury. About: In 2011, Wenaas registered a 1-1 record while appearing in 11 games and making four starts. He pitched 25.2 innings, fanning 27 hitters. He collected three wins in 12 games while making eight starts as a sophomore in 2010. He struck-out a season-high seven batters against Northwestern Oklahoma State on 4/18/10. Ambrose clubbed two homers and finished the four state playoff games he played in with a .750 batting average. He ended the postseason with four homers, 11 RBIs, two doubles and 10 runs scored. He was named ESPN Rise- National Player of the Week, All-State, conference player of the year, all-conference, Union Player of the Year, and Tulsa Metro Player of the year. As a freshman, Bargas played at the University of Oklahoma where he tossed 11.1 innings, striking out 13 batters with a 3.97 ERA. He made a trip to the World Series with the Sooners in 2010. The Owasso High School product won three straight state championships (07, 08, 09) with the Rams. As a senior in 2009 he was named to the all-state team and earned Tulsa Metro Pitcher of the Year accolades. Bargas finished his senior campaign with a 2-3 record, pitching 72 innings with 87 strikeouts and a 1.30 ERA. In Memoriam of RSU Hillcat Pitcher Tyler Brown The Rogers State University family lost one of its own due to a tragic accident on November 12, 2011.

Brown was an integral part of the Hillcats’ run to the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship in 2011. He closed out the SAC Championship game going two and two-thirds innings giving up one run on four hits and striking out three batters in the 12-7 Hillcat victory. As a freshman he pitched in 14 games and posted a perfect 6-0 record on the hill.

Sophomore baseball player Tyler Brown was killed in a one-car accident west of Claremore. He was 20 years old. “Tyler was a valuable part of our program, a hard worker, and a good teammate. His vibrant attitude and enthusiasm for life will be deeply missed,” said RSU Baseball Coach Ron Bradley.

Before coming to RSU, Brown was a two-sport standout at Berryhill High School. He led the Chiefs to state championship appearances in baseball and football.

Hillcat Baseball 2011 Season in Review

u The Hillcats compiled their best season to date in 2011.

2011 marked the best season in program history for the Rogers State baseball team.

Four players were named SAC Player of the Week. Starting shortstop Randy Ramirez earned the title for the week of April 11. Two weeks later right-handed pitcher Grant Cosby was named Pitcher of the week. Pitcher Tyler Garner and catcher Lance Rymel swept the weekly awards for the week of March 7.

The Diamond Cats earned their first Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title with a 12-7 win over Oklahoma Baptist in the championship game held at Lubbock Christian University. Clinching the SAC title guaranteed the Hillcats would make their first appearance at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. Despite the 2011 campaign ending at the NAIA opening round, RSU broke several single-season records and raised the bar for the program.

Barnes was named NAIA Honorable Mention AllAmerican. The Bentonville, Ark. native, is the first RSU baseball player to earn All-American honors. The centerfielder started in all 60 games for the Cats and etched his name in the record book as he registered the school’s single-season record for stolen bases (39), hits (83), total bases (132), at bats (206) and runs scored (65). The senior was also named first team All-Sooner Athletic Conference.

RSU (45-15) produced its fifth consecutive winning season and first 45-win season. The Diamond Cats reeled off a program-best 19-game winning streak to start the season.

Three Hillcats joined Barnes on the all-conference team. Cosby was also selected to the first team while juniors Ramirez and Rymel were tabbed second team all-conference. Cosby, a right-handed hurler, ended his five-year baseball career at RSU as the winningest pitcher in program history. The senior from Fayetteville, Ark., registered a team-high eight wins on the year and holds several RSU records. He ranked first in the NAIA in walks allowed per nine innings (.56) and third in total walks allowed with seven on the season. The right-handed hurler led RSU in wins, innings pitched (86.2), and strikeouts (68). He completed his career as the Diamond Cats all-time leader in pitching victories.

For the first time in the program’s short six-year history, RSU cracked the NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top-25 poll. The Cats entered the first regular season poll at No. 13 and climbed as high as No. 11. Coach Ron Bradley’s squad was ranked No. 15 in the final Top-25 poll on May 8. Seven Hillcats regularly in the starting lineup hit .313 or better on the season and lead-off hitter Brandt Barnes led the way with a .403 average. As a team, the Cats hit .328 and belted 50 home runs. RSU tallied 126 doubles on the season which ranked seventh in the NAIA. As a team, the Cats drove in 413 runs with sophomore Cody Campbell leading the team as he broke the single-season record with 66 RBI. The Diamond Cats stole 126 bases and Barnes broke the single-season record with 39 stolen bases.

Hillcat Baseball 2011 Season in Review Ramirez, from the Bronx, N.Y., started in 58 games as the Hillcats everyday shortstop and led the team in on-base percentage (.511). Rymel, a Broken Arrow, Okla. native, started in 39 games behind the plate for the Cats. He had a .988 fielding percentage as he committed just three errors in 251 chances. He drove in 33 runs and had nine doubles on the season. Left-handed pitcher, Drew Taylor was among the 228 baseball student-athletes that were named 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. The junior from Seminole, Okla., is majoring in marketing and holds a 3.65 grade point average. He tossed 19.1 innings with a 2.33 earned run average. He registered four wins and one loss on the season. Junior Matt Sample became the first Rogers State baseball player to be drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft as the Arizona Diamondbacks selected him in the 28th round. The Pea Ridge, Ark. native, tossed 23.2 innings for the Hillcats last season. He tallied two wins and four saves with 31 strikeouts. The 66, 230-pound pitcher has routinely had his fastball clocked in the mid-90â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. The right-handed hurler recorded a save against then-No. 5 ranked Lubbock Christian and he registered a win over No. 2 Oklahoma City in his first start of the season at the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament. Barnes, Cosby, Sample, Jordan Clark, Joe Manbodh, Kevin Radford, Jairo Valdez and Colton West each made invaluable contributions to the Hillcat baseball program as they completed their careers on The Hill last spring. RSU returns 23 players from the championship squad. 10 of the Hillcats 15 pitchers from last season will return to the mound and five everyday starters in the field will return to the diamond.

Hillcat Baseball 2011 Season in Review

u RSU earned its first Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in 2011.

SAC Championship

The Cats season-high 18 runs scored was fueled by a trio of home runs that accounted for 10 of the team’s runs scored. The Hillcats surged to a 10-2 lead over the first four innings and cruised to the run-rule decision with eight runs in the sixth frame.

The Rogers State baseball team made history last season as it earned its first Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. The Diamond Cats registered a 12-7 victory over secondseeded Oklahoma Baptist on the campus of Lubbock Christian University to earn the title. The No. 19-ranked Hillcats used 18 hits to post runs in all but one inning and claimed the title over No. 5-ranked OBU.

With the win, the Diamond Cats moved on to face top seeded Oklahoma City University. The Diamond Cats upset the No. 2-ranked Stars for the second time in eight days, 12-8. With the win the Cats moved to 2-0 in pool play and advanced to the SAC title game.

Junior Eric Faust (2-1) registered the win on the mound for the Hillcats. The left-handed hurler tossed 6.1 innings and allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits with one strikeout. Freshman Tyler Brown closed out the contest as he pitched 2.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits while fanning three hitters.

Matt Sample (2-0) registered the win in his first start of the season. The junior right-handed pitcher tossed 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while fanning eight. Drew Taylor closed out the seventh allowing one run on two hits. Freshman Tyler Brown pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with one strikeout. Eric Faust closed out the game and gave up one hit and struck out one.

Sophomore Cody Campbell tallied three hits and three RBI. He tied the RSU single-season home run record in the third with a two-run bomb over the centerfield fence. It was the St. Cloud, Fla. native’s 13th homer of the season. Seven Hillcat hitters had two hits in the game.

The Rogers State baseball team was unable to fend off a ninth inning rally by Oklahoma Christian as it fell 19-16 in the final pool play game at Hays Field. Despite the loss, the Diamond Cats moved on to the title game and defeated second-seeded Oklahoma Baptist.

Coach Ron Bradley’s squad started SAC Tournament play with an 18-2 drubbing of the University of Science and Arts at Wilder Field on the campus of Wayland Baptist University.

With the championship victory, the Cats advanced to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round for the first time in program history.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Mission Statement The Rogers State University Hillcat Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) mission is to foster open communication between student-athletes and the athletics administration, and to enhance the student-athlete experience by developing leadership skills, promoting a positive student-athlete image, and improving the day-to-day life of all student-athletes through activities, social events and community service.

Membership SAAC membership will be composed of one representative from each sport. Members must be academically and athletically eligible, and must be of sophomore standing or higher. Members must adhere to and support the purpose of the SAAC, and attend scheduled meetings unless previously excused. If absent, members must make arrangements for a temporary alternate representative from their sport to attend. One member of the athletics department administration shall serve as the SAAC advisor. The SAAC advisor will be selected and appointed by the Athletic Director.

New Construction at the Hillcat Complex

u Completion of the Hillcat Baseball and Softball Complex is expected in spring 2012.

The Rogers State University athletic department has embarked on the largest facilities enhancement initiative in the history of Hillcat Athletics and wants to give its fans an opportunity to be a part of the excitement.

The projects include $4 million in improvements to the baseball, softball, soccer, and cross country facilities that will benefit more than 120 of our student-athletes on a yearly basis.

RSU athletics is offering its fans and community supporters a fun and easy way to partner with the Hillcats during this historic period of development through the Pave the Way campaign. Supporters can leave a lasting legacy at one of the newly renovated facilities by purchasing an engraved brick with a personal message of their choosing. All proceeds from the sale of bricks will benefit capital improvements for RSU athletics. For more information about ordering a brick, contact the RSU Athletic Department at 918-343-7782.

The RSU athletic program has enjoyed unprecedented success since its inception in 2005. The Hillcats have combined for three conference championships, six national tournament appearances, and an overall winning clip of 67 percent over the past six years. RSU is proud to have the opportunity to provide its athletes with facilities that will foster continued growth and success for many years to come. Bricks at the Hillcat Baseball/Softball Complex will be placed in the central courtyard between the two fields. Located between the main entrance and the seating area, thousands of fans will pass through the courtyard each year. Bricks at the Soccer/Cross Country Fieldhouse will be located outside the building in a plaza area near the concessions and restrooms. The plaza will serve as a gathering place for fans before, during and after games with great sightlines to the field.

“These facility improvements will be a huge asset to our athletic programs, the RSU campus and the community,” RSU Director of Athletics Ryan Bradley said. “Once completed, these facilities will be recognized among the best small-college venues in the country. The Pave the Way campaign is a unique and fun way for our fans to support the growth of Hillcat Athletics and own a piece of history.”

RSU’s Game Central portal provides fans with access to Hillcat game information within a unified and custom-branded interface. Game Central will include live and on-demand highquality audio and video, complete and searchable up-to-date broadcast schedules as well as live in-game stats of the broadcasts. All live broadcasts are archived and available under the On Demand tab in the Game Central portal. Live video streaming will be provided for more than 20 home dates at the Hillcat Complex bringing all the excitement of Hillcat baseball and softball to your computer. The streaming is iPhone, iPad and iPod friendly and is also compatible with most other mobile devices. All home games will include audio, video and live stats. Josh Haley will begin his inaugural season as the voice of Hillcat Baseball and Softball. The 2010 Rogers State graduate is a familiar face on the Claremore campus having served as Sports Editor of The Hillpost his senior year. Haley has been a member of RSU Radio’s Claremore Zebra Football broadcasts for four years, spending the last two seasons as the color commentator. As a student at RSU, Haley was host of “ClawTalk” on RSU Radio a weekly sports talk show covering all things Hillcat Athletics. No stranger to area sports, he has contributed to the Tulsa World for the last year covering Green Country high school athletics. New Media Coordinator Steve Braun will fill in on occasional broadcasts throughout the 2012 season. Braun had served as the voice of Hillcat Softball the previous two years but will move to coordinating the production of live video streaming.
