Letter from the President I am pleased to welcome you to the 2010 season of exciting RSU Hillcat Soccer.
On behalf of students, faculty and staff of the university, we are excited about the fourth season of RSU Hillcat Soccer! Dr. Larry Rice
As president of this great institution, I am so proud of the sportsmanship of our student-athletes and the quality of our athletic programs. I also am gratified by the academic achievements of our student-athletes, who have experienced success in the classroom as well as the playing field.
President Rogers State University
The university is pleased to be part of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) - two organizations that place a high priority on promoting healthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are values that we share at RSU and impress upon our student-athletes every day.
Letter from the Athletic Director Welcome to the fourth year of Hillcat Soccer! The evolution of RSU and its athletic programs continues to be one of the great higher education success stories in our state. We are glad you have chosen to join us for this exciting time in the growth of Hillcat athletics.
season and we anticipate even bigger and better things from the Soccer Hillcats in 2010. We hope you will make it a point to cheer on our soccer teams at Soldier Field, one of the finest college soccer facilities in the region, as well as on the road this fall. Your continued support will be vital to all of our programs and I hope you know how much it is appreciated. Together, we are building a strong foundation and a proud tradition for the future of RSU athletics.
Rarely in life does one get the chance to be a part of something at the foundation level. However, here at RSU we are all doing just that. The players, coaches and fans are building our athletic tradition together from the ground up. Our soccer programs have enjoyed tremendous success in their first three seasons under the leadership of Coach Derek Larkin and his staff. Both the men's and women's teams reached the postseason in the same year for the second consecutive year last

About RSU Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success Story Rogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education. Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 70 percent (student credit hours), earning RSU the title of one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities. RSU is a dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,400 students, widely recognized for its high-quality academic programs, distance learning options, and hightechnology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area. RSU is one of 11 regional universities in Oklahoma.
u RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.
RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's degrees and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technology, environmental conservation, military history, sport management, and game development. Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studies through RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence in its nursing program.
Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU was the only regional university in Oklahoma to be granted continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a major accomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.
u Ninety-five percent of RSU nursing students pass the Registered Nurse (R.N.) licensure exam on the first attempt.
RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with private, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semesterlong internship earn college credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders and policymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program. Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees available in their fields from esteemed institutions across the nation, including Princeton University, Duke University, and the University of Oklahoma.
u The President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year scholarship program designed to foster personal and professional development, was designed for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities.

About RSU The university also boasts an Honors Program, which provides an atmosphere where scholars can challenge themselves academically to maximize their college experience through specialized courses, student/faculty joint research projects, and a strong emphasis on service learning in the community. In addition, the President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year scholarship program that fosters personal and professional development, was designed for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities. RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy, South Korea, and Wales through the university's Studies-atLarge Program. The international study programs provide students with opportunities to see the world, learn about other cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, has become the centerpiece of the main campus in Claremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facility combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize, and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community. A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus was completed in time for the fall 2010 semester. The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leading-edge features associated with higher learning today, including classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, art gallery, and an amphitheater-style outdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.
u The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library features large study areas, a coffee bar and wireless Internet throughout the facility.
The university broke ground in August on a new student apartment community that will double the number of students living on the main campus in Claremore in the fall of 2011. The $11.5 million project will accommodate up to 255 students in a three-level facility and will feature a clubhouse, located across the street from the present university apartments. The new 92,991-square-foot complex will be located just west of Soldier Field, with a main entrance on Colonel Horne Drive. The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library opened in 2004. The library features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations, classrooms, and a coffee bar. u The Centennial Center features a cafĂŠ, bookstore, 24-hour computer lab, student lounge, and recreation area for students. The 50,000-square-foot facility also contains meeting rooms and a ballroom for the community.

About RSU
u Meyer Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A Brief History of RSU RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus. However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy, which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971. Known as the “West Point of the Southwest, the OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.
u RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities.
In 1971, the OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station, and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted less than two years later in 2000. u RSU has more than 4,400 students enrolled on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, and Pryor.

Hillcat LIFE Programs
u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.
Academic Development The Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development program is designed to support Hillcat athletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete. Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. It is the goal of the SAAD program to help each athlete grow into a responsible adult as they become upper classmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future. The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrew, is there every step of the way for each athlete to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.
Hillcat LIFE Programs The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes success off the field or court. Each year RSU introduces a variety of programs that will help enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining manners, dating manners and courtesies. Each athlete is given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals. Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to elighten student-athletes about the existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more careful decision-making. Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.
5
Hillcat LIFE Programs Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules. RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.
Champions of Character
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity. u RSU strives to develop its student-athletes both on and off the field.

Derek Larkin - Head Soccer Coach In just three seasons on the Hill Head Men's and Women's Soccer Coach Derek Larkin has established a winning tradition with the Rogers State University soccer programs.
Larkin joined RSU in January 2007 as the university's first head soccer coach. Before coming to the Hill, Larkin enjoyed success as the head boy's soccer coach at Bishop Kelley High School from 2004-06. He led the Comets to back-to-back state championships in 2005 and 2006.
Larkin led both of his first-year programs to a second place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference and a spot in the Region VI Tournament in 2007, and reached the postseason with both squads again in 2008 and 2009. He spurred the Hillcat women to the SAC Tournament Championship during their inaugural season and was named SAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year.
Larkin previously served as the head men's and women's soccer coach at Bacone College from 2002 to 2004. He was named the Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading the Lady Warriors to the conference championship. Larkin also juggled “double duty as both the men's and women's head soccer coach at Missouri Valley College from 1997 to 1999 and at Catoosa High School from 1999 to 2002. He compiled six district championships at Catoosa and was honored as the head coach of the Oklahoma All-State team in 2002.
His teams have combined for 72 wins over a three-year span with the women's program posting an astounding 46-16 record. Both the men and women enjoyed double digit win totals in each of their first three seasons and have averaged a third place finish in the conference.
Larkin currently serves as a boy's coach for the Owasso Extreme Futbol Club and is the former director of coaching for the Oklahoma Revolution Soccer Club and girl's head coach for the Tulsa Nationals Soccer Club. He collected Directors Cup Oklahoma State Championships in 2004 and 2005 with his '87 and '88 girl's club teams, respectively. Larkin and his wife Christy have two boys, Zach (10) and Adam (8) and reside in Owasso.

Shawn Slater Assistant Head Coach Assistant Head Coach Shawn Slater returns for the fourth season of Hillcat Soccer. Slater has been an integral part of establishing a winning tradition at RSU since the program's inception in 2007. He brings a vast amount of experience as a player and coach to the program. An All-State selection at Tulsa Nathan Hale High School, Slater later starred at John Brown University as well as with several professional teams, including the Tulsa Roughnecks and the Dallas Sidekicks. In addition to his role with the Hillcats, Slater also serves as the head boy's soccer coach at Claremore High School. He worked as an assistant coach at Booker T. Washington and Tulsa Memorial High School before landing his first head coaching position at Nathan Hale in 1995. Slater later guided the Bixby and Chickasha boy's soccer programs and helped Catoosa claim the Class 4A State Championship in 2003-04. He currently serves on the coaching staff for the Blitz United Soccer Club. Slater led the Claremore High School boy's team to its first ever state title appearance in 2007.
Bryan Weygand Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Bryan Weygand begins his third season with the Hillcats this fall. Weygand assists with the men's team and also works with the keepers for both programs. He got his start in coaching at Bixby High School where he worked as an assistant from 1996-2001. Weygand began coaching the Hurricane Futball Club in 1999 as co-coach of the 88 boys until their graduation in 2006. Since 2002 Weygand has overseen all goalkeeper training duties within the Hurricane club including the competitive, academy and recreational divisions of the Broken Arrow Soccer Club. Weygand played alongside Coach Shawn Slater with the Tulsa Roughnecks. His professional playing career spanned from 1995-2005 in the USISL and PASL leagues. Weygand also works for Paetec Communications as an account manager. His wife Kendi is a student at RSU.

Men’s Soccer Outlook Outlook
Larkin labeled junior college transfer Marko Bukva as “an outstanding player.” A native of Karlovac, Croatia, Bukva helped anchor the defense for Cowley County before coming to the Hill. Two players coming off redshirt seasons also figure to play key roles. Junior Justin Friesen returns to the backline after suffering a season-ending injury in the first game last season. Redshirt freshman Steven Baker will get his first chance to play under the lights at Soldier Field after training with the team in 2009. “Those three are key players who should be able to step in and help us right away,” Larkin stated.
The Rogers State men's soccer team looks to carry momentum from a wildly successful 2009 campaign into the 2010 season. The Hillcats posted a school-record 13wins last fall and also recorded their first postseason win. Coach Derek Larkin's squad enters 2010 with a wealth of experience, an array of optimism and a sense of urgency. “This is probably the best team we've put on the field since I've been here and they know this is their time,” Larkin said. “It should be a great year for them.”
Returners
Schedule
The Hillcats return to the pitch as perhaps the most experienced team in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The 2010 roster features 22 players that were in the program last season, including nine regular starters and 10 seniors. Seniors Sean Surridge, Brett Jones, Des Fitzgerald, Carlos Zuta, Jaime Perez and Matt Longaberger will look to close out an impressive four-year run on the Hill. The six veterans were part of Larkin's inaugural recruiting class at RSU and have played an integral role in building a winning tradition.
The Hillcats have beefed up their non-conference schedule in order to be better prepared for the rigors of Sooner Athletic Conference play. RSU will open the 18-game slate with a road match against regionalrival Oklahoma Wesleyan in Bartlesville Aug. 31. The Cats will face an NCAA Division I opponent for the first time ever as they travel to Oral Roberts on Sept. 7. Larkin's squad will open the conference schedule with three straight road dates at Southern Nazarene (Sept. 28), Wayland Baptist (Oct. 2), and Oklahoma City (Oct. 5). In return, they'll play five of their final seven regular season matches at the friendly confines of Soldier Field. The Hillcats will welcome Oklahoma Christian to Claremore on Oct. 26, for what should be an emotional Senior Night for the class of 2010. The regular season wraps up with a trip to Mid-America Christian Nov. 2 as RSU seeks to secure its fourth consecutive postseason berth.
“Having all those guys back, we have the luxury of all that experience and so we've been able to focus a lot less on the little things and instead focus a lot more on game preparation,” Larkin noted. “I'm excited to have this group in. It's a real special group.”
Expectations
RSU returns 90 percent of its offensive production from last year's squad, led by the program's all-time leading goal scorer, Fitzgerald. Zuta and junior Henrique Sousa combined for 11 goals and six assists in 2009 while Surridge earned all-conference recognition between the posts for the second time in three years. u henrique sousa forward
Newcomers Only a few new names have been added to the roster with so many veterans already in camp. However, the coaching staff expects several new additions to make an immediate impact in their first year with the Cats.
10
The time is now for this collection of athletes who have invested so much in building a strong foundation for the RSU soccer program. As they prepare for the battles ahead, the Hillcats say they are intent on doing something special in 2010.
“This group wants to leave its mark on the university with this team,” Larkin said. “They've put a lot of hours and hard work into this program. They want to be the first team to get to the national tournament and they're working very hard to do that.”

2009 Men’s Soccer Season In Review The evolution of the Rogers State men's soccer program took another giant step forward in 2009. The Hillcats notched a program-best 13 victories and recorded the first postseason victory in team history. “I thought our guys performed exceptionally well this fall,” RSU Head Coach Derek Larkin said following the season. “We struggled toward the end of the year, but the guys were motivated to come back and finish strong to earn our first postseason win.” After dropping a one-goal decision in the season opener, the Cats roared back with nine straight victories and boasted a 91 record at the end of September. Oklahoma City blitzed RSU with a 5-0 decision to open the October slate before Larkin's squad rallied to post decisive three-goal victories over Oklahoma Baptist and St. Gregory's. The final few weeks of the season resembled a rollercoaster ride. The Hillcats settled for a 1-1 draw in a tough battle at John Brown and lost 2-0 to eventual conference champion Science & Arts. Junior Carlos Zuta netted a last-minute goal to propel the Hillcats to a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma Christian, but then suffered setbacks to Mid-America Christian and Southern Nazarene. RSU qualified for the conference tournament for the third consecutive year and earned a home match in the opening round as the No. 4 seed. Zuta delivered once again with a score in the 84th minute as the Cats claimed their first ever postseason victory against Oklahoma Christian. RSU ran into a buzz-saw in the semifinals and were bounced from the tourney by the Drovers of USAO. Zuta wasn't the only Hillcat to leave his mark on the program in 2009. Three players earned all conference accolades led by junior goalkeeper Sean Surridge. Surridge posted six shutouts between the posts and earned SAC defensive player of the week honors three times. Junior Des Fitzgerald and sophomore Henrique Sousa joined Surridge as second team all-conference selections. Fitzgerald was tabbed as the national player of the week after recording a school-record four goals against Southwestern College. Sousa tallied six goals on the season and tied for second on the team in total points. “We had several veterans really step up and make some big contributions this year,” Larkin noted. “The exciting thing is all of those guys are coming back which should set us up for a special year in 2010.” With 22 returners and 9 starters slated to return from the 2009 squad Larkin's Hillcats will look to take the next step and set their sights squarely on a conference championship in 2010.

Women’s Soccer Outlook Outlook
“Top-to-bottom this is the best class we've had in my four years here,” he stated.
The Hillcats look to complete their ascent to the top of the Sooner Athletic Conference as they take to the pitch for the fourth season of Rogers State soccer this fall. Coach Derek Larkin's women's program found the climb a little bit steeper in 2009. However, the Cats still managed to notch 13 wins and clinch a postseason berth for the third consecutive year.
Larkin immediately pointed to junior transfer Chelsea Myers and freshman Cierra Lohaus as players to watch in 2010. Myers, a forward from Hutchison Community College, possesses great athleticism and speed while Lohaus is noted as a strong, physical player who should compete for playing time right away.

“Those three girls have been with us from the very beginning and so they know exactly what's expected of them,” Larkin said. “Their leadership will be invaluable and we hope this will be a special year for them.”
Newcomers Ten new faces have been added to the RSU program and Larkin wasted no time surmising his thoughts on the 2010 recruiting class.

2009 Women’s Soccer Season In Review The Rogers State women's soccer team continued to solidify its standing as one of the Sooner Athletic Conference's top programs with a strong showing in 2009. Although the Hillcats struggled to overcome injuries and labored through a stretch of tough conference losses, the team rallied late in the year to reach the postseason and earned its first SAC Tournament victory in two years.
Larkin's squad cleaned up on weekly conference and national awards in 2009. Parker earned conference and national player of the week honors after tying a school record with six goals in the first game of the season. Junior keeper Bailey Lynn raked in the accolades as she was named national defensive player of the week in October and was tabbed the SAC defensive player of the week three times.
“I felt like we underachieved a little bit in 2009, but we we're able to finish on a high note,” Head Coach Derek Larkin said. “They battled back from adversity and really competed well towards the end of the year.”
Freshman Lauren Hager made a big impact in her first season on the Hill. The Belgrade, Mont., native was second on the team in total points with 12 goals and five assists. Junior Tiffany Roberts turned in her third solid campaign with 10 goals and five assists, climbing into second place in career goals and total points.
The Hillcats opened the season with a bang as they rewrote the record books during an 18-0 thrashing of Bacone College in the season opener. The rout sparked a seven-game winning streak to start the year as RSU outscored its opponents 43-3 during the stretch.
With three years of maturity and a large number of established veterans set to return in the fall, the future remains bright for the RSU women's soccer program as it enters its fourth year of competition in 2010.
The Cats were finally tripped up in a road match against Ottawa University on Sept. 27, but responded quickly with back-to-back conference road wins at Wayland Baptist and Oklahoma City. A 1-0 home loss to Oklahoma Baptist signaled the beginning of a mid-season funk. Larkins' squad posted a 3-5 record during the month of October, including three onegoal losses. A double-overtime loss at John Brown and an upset at the hands of Mid-America Christian were particularly hard to swallow. However, the Hillcats responded with a 3-0 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State in the regular season finale to clinch a spot in the SAC Tournament for the third straight season. RSU avenged its regular season loss to Oklahoma Baptist in the tournament's opening round. Sophomore Abby Rickner drilled home the winning goal from 40 yards out to send the Cats into the semifinals. Regular season champion Southern Nazarene halted RSU's postseason run with a 3-1 decision in next round. The Hillcats finished with a 13-7 record and a sixth place finish in league play. Junior transfers Kimmia Parker and Shereen Clarke earned second team all-conference accolades. Both players were in their first season at RSU after transferring from soccer power Lindsey Wilson College. Parker led the Cats with 16 goals while Clarke chipped in with six goals and four assists. u shereen clarke midfielder
