Letter from the President Welcome to a new season of exciting RSU Hillcat Softball!
As many of you know, our athletic programs, although just a few years in existence, have experienced tremendous success. The RSU baseball and softball teams performed quite well during their fourth season, and the attendance and enthusiasm of fans was tremendous.
Since becoming president of this great institution, I have been as impressed by the sportsmanship of our student-athletes as I have the quality of our athletic programs. I also have been impressed by the academic achievements of our student-athletes, who have experienced success in the classroom as well as on the playing field.
We are excited about this season of RSU Softball! Go Hillcats! Dr. Larry Rice
The university is pleased to be part of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) - two organizations that place a high priority on promoting healthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are values that we share at RSU and impress upon our studentathletes every day.
President Rogers State University
Letter from the Athletic Director Welcome to Hillcat softball! It's with great excitement and anticipation that we embark on our fifth season of softball at RSU. The Hillcats continued their tradition of success under first-year head coach Mark Dicus in 2009, and we look forward to even better results in 2010. The immediate success of RSU athletics has garnered national attention for our university and community, and we are honored you have chosen to join us for this exciting time in the growth of Hillcat athletics.
Rarely in life does one get the chance to be a part of something at the foundation level. However, here at RSU we are all doing just that. The players, coaches, and fans are building our athletic tradition together from the ground up. We hope that you enjoy your afternoons and evenings spent cheering on our team at the Hillcat Complex. We also hope you'll follow the Softball Cats on the road by tuning in to our radio broadcasts later this spring on RSU Radio 91.3 FM or by visiting www.rsuhillcats.com. Your continued support will be vital to all of our programs, and I hope you know how much it is appreciated. Together, we can build a strong foundation and a proud tradition for the future of RSU athletics.

About RSU Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success Story Rogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education. Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 70 percent (student credit hours), earning RSU the title of one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities. RSU is a dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,200 students, widely recognized for its high-quality academic programs, distance learning options, and hightechnology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area. RSU is one of 11 regional universities in Oklahoma.
u RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.
RSU offers 35 bachelor's degrees and 24 associate degrees, and is one of a few universities in Oklahoma with the dual mission of offering both four and two-year degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technology, environmental conservation, sport management, and game development. Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studies through RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence in its nursing program.
Distinguished Academic Achievements u RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence in its nursing program.
RSU was the only regional university in Oklahoma to be granted continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a major accomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU. RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with private, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semesterlong internship earn college credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders and policymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.
u The President's Leadership Class (PLC) is a four-year scholarship program designed to foster personal and professional development for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities.
2
About RSU Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees available in their fields from esteemed institutions across the nation, including Princeton University, Duke University, and the University of Oklahoma. The university also boasts an Honors Program, which provides an atmosphere where scholars can challenge themselves academically to maximize their college experience through specialized courses, student/faculty joint research projects, and a strong emphasis on service learning in the community. In addition, the President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year scholarship program that fosters personal and professional development, was designed for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities.

RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy, South Korea, and Wales, and domestic study opportunities in Chicago, New York, and other cities. The domestic and international study programs provide students with opportunities to see the world, learn about other cultures, and enrich their educational experience. Students can learn more about these programs at www.rsu.edu.
Growth in Learning Facilities The new Centennial Center is a two-level, 50,000square-foot facility that combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize, and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers expanded ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community.
u The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library features large study areas, a coffee bar, and wireless Internet throughout the facility.
A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus is underway. New student housing on the Claremore campus will be available in 2011. The recent expansion of the RSU campus in Pryor has resulted in a doubling of the campus facility, more classes, and more students. The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library opened in 2004. The library features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations, classrooms, and a coffee bar. u The Centennial Center opened on the the Claremore campus last year.

About RSU A Brief History of RSU RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus. However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy, which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971. Known as the “West Point of the Southwest, the OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.
u Meyer Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1971, the OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station, and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted less than two years later in 2000.

Hillcat LIFE Programs Academic Development The Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SADD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete. Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. It is the goal of the SAAD program to help the athletes grow into responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take the initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future.
u Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program. Student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study.
The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Jared Hood, will be there every step of the way for each athletes to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.
Hillcat LIFE Programs The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote studentathletes’ success off the field or court. Each year RSU introduces a variety of programs that will help enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Etiquette Training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits and dating manners and courtesies. Each athlete is given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.
u RSU student-athletes have access to individual tutors to ensure they get the academic support they need.
Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to elighten student-athletes about the existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more careful decisionmaking. Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and lifestyles. Athletes are given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.
u Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining etiquette and dating manners and courtesies.
5
Hillcat LIFE Programs Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules. RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.
Champions of Character
u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sports and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches, and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities.
u RSU strives to develop its student-athletes both on and off the field.
The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches, and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators, and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines, and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sports activity.

2010 Softball Season Outlook The Rogers State softball program enters the 2010 season with a renewed sense of optimism. The Hillcats produced their fourth consecutive 30-win season in 2009 under first-year head coach Mark Dicus, but failed to meet their ultimate goal of reaching the National Tournament. Now, with a full year to implement his coaching philosophy and acquire prized recruits, Dicus has the RSU program poised for a return to national prominence.
u Tanya koch catcher
“I think the biggest difference you'll see from the Hillcats this year is we will have a strong offense from top to bottom and will be capable of putting up some big numbers with an explosive offense,” Dicus said. “The one thing I'm sure of is that we're better at every position than we were last year. We're better offensively and defensively, and we've got more pitching depth.”
RETURNERS Perhaps the one thing the Hillcats lack entering 2010 is a large cast of veterans. Juniors Katie Bointy, Marie Gaudet, and Tanya Koch represent the only returners from last season. With no seniors on the roster, the trio will be called upon to provide guidance for a long list of talented newcomers. “The three returners we have will bring a lot in terms of leadership and work ethic,” Dicus said. “All three have made major contributions over the past two years and are some of the hardest workers we have, which is contagious and has already rubbed off on the rest of our team.” The returners combined to make 155 starts in 2009 and have been a staple of the RSU lineup in each of the past two seasons. Bointy and Gaudet solidified the corners of the Hillcat infield with Bointy earning SAC Gold Glove honors last season at third base. Dicus labeled Gaudet as “the most athletic player I've ever coached.” Koch has handled the Cats' stellar pitching staff as RSU's primary catcher in each of the past two years. She threw out 13 of 21 would-be base stealers in 2009 and upped her batting average by nearly 100 points from her freshman season. The veterans combined for 15 home runs and 60 RBI last season and are expected to provide bigger numbers in 2010.
8
2010 Softball Season Outlook NEWCOMERS Dicus's highly-touted recruiting class comprises seven freshmen and eight juniors, many of whom will be called upon to make an immediate impact for the Hillcats. The list of newcomers includes a junior college All-American, two Division I transfers, and a host of all-state honorees.
Connors State College product Sarah Harvey and Collinsville freshman Lindsey Curtis should provide plenty of pop in the middle of the RSU lineup. Harvey was a two-time All-American for the Cowgirls and belted 16 home runs in 2009. Curtis has been penciled in as the Cats' designated hitter after cranking out six homers in just a handful of games during the fall.
“As a whole, the newcomers have already improved our club dramatically on offense,” Dicus said. “Another huge upgrade we've had is in our team defense. This team has the same passion to play hard that last year's team had, they're just more talented.”
The departure of 2009 senior Jenny Johnson left a huge void in the RSU pitching staff. However, Dicus has replaced one strong arm with two as he netted a pair of transfers from top four-year programs. “We lost a great pitcher last year in J.J., but we have two Division I transfers coming in to replace her,” Dicus noted. “Tye Coats, who played at Texas Tech, will lead us. She has incredible power and has been clocked between 63 and 66 miles per hour with good movement on her pitches. To complement her, we signed Taryn Hernandez, a left hander who started for two years at BethuneCookman. She's a fierce competitor who isn't afraid of anybody.”
Dicus noted freshman shortstop Ashlie Fauchier and junior centerfielder Brittany White as potential Gold Glove candidates. “Ashley learns very quickly and has filled a position in the middle infield that is very critical for us while Brittany was just a human highlight reel in the outfield this fall.”

2010 Softball Season Outlook
u The Hillcats have set their focus on Decatur, Alabama, and the National Tournament in 2010.
SCHEDULE
EXPECTATIONS
A myriad of home games highlight the 2010 RSU softball schedule. After playing just six home dates last spring, the Hillcats have 24 regular season games and a two-day tournament scheduled for the Hillcat Complex in 2010. The inaugural Border War Tournament will feature eight teams from Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas April 9 and 10.
The RSU softball program has accomplished a lot in its brief existence on the Hill. In just four short years, the Hillcats have established a winning tradition, earned a Top 10 national ranking, and notched a number of notable wins over nationally ranked programs. However, one primary goal has eluded the Cats thus far. As they take the diamond this spring, the Hillcats have only one destination in mind.
The Sooner Athletic Conference has also adopted a new scheduling format with each team playing a home-andhome series with every school in the league. RSU will host nine SAC doubleheaders, including dates with 2009 National Tournament participants Lubbock Christian (March 24), Oklahoma City (April 1), and St. Gregory's (May 1).
“We always set our focus on Decatur, Alabama, and the National Tournament,” Dicus stated. “That's our goal and I think this year, more than ever, it's obtainable. We want to get to the National Tournament with a chance to win the last game of the season.”
The top eight teams will advance to the conference tournament May 7 and 8 at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Mark Dicus - Head Softball Coach Head Softball Coach Mark Dicus begins his second season at the helm of the Rogers State softball program in 2010. Dicus led RSU to a 31-24 record and a fifth place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference during his first campaign on the Hill in 2009. He replaced Dawn ReedSchultz, who led the Hillcat softball program during its first three years of existence. Dicus placed four players on the all-conference squad and one player on the conference gold glove team in 2009. Highly regarded for his recruiting skills, Dicus has added 15 promising newcomers for the 2010 season. Prior to joining the Hillcats, Dicus spent a decade building a championship program at Seminole State College. In his 10 seasons at Seminole, Dicus led the Lady Trojans to a 550-196 overall record, claimed seven conference championships, and made four national tournament appearances. He carved his niche as a softball guru during a 13-year run at Dewey High School. Dicus led the Bulldoggers to 13 straight state tournament appearances, reaching the championship game nine times while earning four state titles. He leaped to the college ranks in 1999 when he became the first head softball coach at Seminole State. Dicus won 79 percent (448-118) of his games as the softball coach at DHS and was named the Oklahoma State Coach of the Year four times for his efforts. He was honored as the National Federation Coach of the Year in 1994 and was elected to the Oklahoma High School Fastpitch Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002. Dicus is charged with guiding a Hillcat softball team that has quickly earned national respect and recognition in just four seasons of competition. RSU has achieved three consecutive 30-win seasons, including a program-best 42 victories in 2008. RSU achieved a Top 10 national ranking and defeated the eventual national champion, Lubbock Christian, in 2008 and knocked off national powerhouse Oklahoma City in 2009. “Our team will have one specific goal and that's to be a national champion,” Dicus said following his hiring in 2008. “I'm very aware of the conference we play in and the level of competition it produces. I'm excited about the challenge and eager to get started.”
11
Amy Renault - Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Amy Renault returns for her second year as a member of the RSU coaching staff. Renault returned home to begin her coaching career with the Hillcats in 2009. The Claremore native completed a standout playing career at the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in 2008. Renault was an all-state selection at C.H.S. and later earned all-conference honors at Connors State College before finishing at USAO. She will complete work on a Master's in Sports Administration this spring at East Central University. Renault's primary duties for the Hillcats include working with the infielders and coaching first base.
Jenny Johnson - Student Assistant Coach Student Assistant Coach Jenny Johnson has moved outside the lines following a storied two-year playing career at RSU. Johnson led the Hillcats with her arm and her bat as a senior in 2009, amassing 29 pitching victories and a school record 14 home runs. She posted a 44-23 record during her two-year career on the Hill. A native of Rohnert Park, Calif., Johnson will guide the RSU battery of pitchers and catchers this spring while also working to complete her degree in sport management.
Jake Trotter - Student Assistant Coach Student Assistant Coach Jake Trotter got his start in the coaching ranks with the Hillcats in 2009. Trotter played baseball at Coffeyville Community College following a successful prep career at Dewey High School. He made the transition to coaching softball while pursuing a degree at RSU. Trotter primarily tutors the outfielders while assisting with hitting instruction as well.

Hillcat Softball 2009 Season in Review The Rogers State softball team endured a number of peaks and valleys throughout the 2009 season. Under the direction of first-year head coach Mark Dicus, the Hillcats achieved their third consecutive 30-win season and placed fifth in the prestigious Sooner Athletic Conference.
A strong core of senior leadership shouldered the load for the Hillcats for much of the year. Megan Wood, Lilly Nevarez, Jenny Johnson, and Natalie Smith each produced incredible results in their final spring on the Hill. The foursome posted the top four batting averages on the squad while rewriting the RSU record books.
“I really enjoyed the season because of the group we had,” Dicus said. “They fought and worked hard and we found out a lot about the Sooner Athletic Conference. I knew it was tough coming in, I just didn't realize how tough it was from top to bottom.”
Wood set a new single-season record for hits (63) while Nevarez scored a record number of runs (53). Smith set a single-game record for total bases (10) and also became just the third Hillcat player to hit two home runs in one game. Johnson wreaked havoc with both her arm and her bat, setting single-season records for wins (29), innings pitched (315.2), home runs (14), and RBI (56) among others.
RSU began the season on a hot streak, reeling off seven consecutive victories before suffering its first loss to defending National Champion Lubbock Christian. From there, the ebb and flow of the season began to settle in. The Cats posted four winning streaks of at least three games, but also lost three straight games on three different occasions.
Johnson also became the first RSU player to earn all-conference accolades in back-to-back seasons. She was named to the first team while Wood and Nevarez earned second-team recognition. Sophomore third baseman Katie Bointy was chosen for the SAC Gold Glove team.
u katie bointy
RSU made history with an unbelievable display of power at the Hillcat Complex on March 6. The Cats became the first team in NAIA history to hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs when they accomplished the feat in a 10-1 dismantling of Northwestern Oklahoma State. Johnson started the parade with a three-run homer and Allison Bean, Marie Gaudet, and Bointy followed suit with solo shots.
third baseman
Dicus also guided RSU to its first ever win over national softball power Oklahoma City University. The Hillcats came from behind on the road with two runs in the sixth inning to post a 3-2 victory over the second-ranked Stars on April 2. RSU closed the regular season by winning three of its final four games and crushed Oklahoma Christian, 6-0, in the opening round of the SAC Tournament. However, losses to Oklahoma Baptist and Northwestern Oklahoma State eliminated the Hillcats from the postseason tournament and effectively closed the books on the 2009 season. “Overall, I was very proud of our kids and the way they competed,” Dicus said. “Our seniors had a fantastic year, which was great to see, and I think we learned a lot about what it takes to win in the SAC on a more consistent basis.” Three sophomore starters from the 2009 campaign are slated to return for the 2010 season. Their experience, along with a host of highly touted recruits, have the Hillcats setting their sights squarely on Decatur, Ala., and the NAIA National Softball Tournament in the years ahead.
“The one thing I can say is that this team battled and played hard every day, so as a coach that's all you can ask for,” Dicus noted. “Our girls answered the bell every day. I think at times we got a little worn down and we took on virtually the entire season with one pitcher.”

New Construction at the Hillcat Complex
u The RSU athletic department recently unveiled its plans for the completion of the Hillcat Baseball & Softball Complex.
These are exciting times on “The Hill in Claremore. RSU is experiencing unparalleled growth as one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities while our emerging athletic programs have enjoyed unprecedented success since their inception in 2006. RSU's rapid development brings with it a new level of expectations and a number of needs for improvement and expansion. We believe that now is the optimal time to begin a lasting partnership with RSU and Hillcat Athletics.
Construction could start as early as Summer 2010. For more information on this project call the RSU athletic office at (918) 343-7782.
Providing our student-athletes with elite-level playing and training facilities is among our highest priorities during this crucial stage in our development. Completion of our new baseball and softball complex is at the top of our list. RSU is currently seeking donations and sponsorship opportunities for the facility with a fundraising goal of $500,000. These contributions will allow us to complete the third and final phase of construction at the complex, which will include additional grandstands, public restrooms, concessions, coaches' offices, a meeting room, central courtyard and much more. The completed facility will serve as the region's premiere multi-purpose athletic facility and afford RSU the opportunity to host multiple high-profile regional and national sporting events each year.
