have a friend who went to great lengths to hide her shopping purchases from her hubby. She used to carry a red texta in her bag to do her own markdowns on shopping tags, so $100 dresses were reduced to just $49. And then there was the time she cut out the label on another expensive new purchase, and carefully sewed in a label from one of her old Kmart tops so her husband was none the wiser! But with this week’s budget fashion special (page 56) there’s no need to tell little white lies to your other half ! So many great finds, all for under $50 – it’s now the perfect excuse to go shopping. And leave your red texta at home!

LS THE ACTOR REVEA THE SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT HIS E RIAG NIGHTMARE MAR LIE TO ANGELINA JO

12 YEARS OF HELL

Angelina and Brad shopping with the family on the 4th of July, 2016. Brad was last seen in public with his kids on July 12 last year.

t’s been almost 500 days since Brad Pitt was seen out in public with his six kids – and the shocking reason why has left Hollywood horrified. It’s been revealed that relations between the A-list actor and his estranged wife Angelina Jolie – who filed for divorce in September 2016 – have become so bad, that the Tomb Raider star is ‘punishing him’ by making visitation schedules with their six children more difficult than ever. While he’s seen the kids – Maddox, 16, Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 11, and nine-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne – behind closed doors, difficulties with Ange have meant it’s been impossible for him to take them out and enjoy LA in 483 days. ‘Brad adores his children and he misses having them in his life 24/7,’ says an insider, adding Brad hasn’t been photographed with his kids since July 12, 2016. ‘But he’s in a weird limbo

because of the squabbling going on between him and Angie. He doesn’t want bit part visits, two hours here, two hours there. He wants full, clear specific times where he can spend quality time with his kids. He’d like to see all of them together and he’d like to have one-on-one time. His kids are growing up fast and he’s missing it. ‘Angie’s playing hardball with him. She arranges these visits on a whim and it’s driving him nuts. It’s on her schedule, not his. He does see them every couple of weeks, but for him that’s not enough. ‘Angie knows exactly what she’s doing. This is her way of punishing him. He’s basically screwed and she knows he can’t make too many waves. She’s got a lot on him and what she’s got could fill a dozen dossiers. She’s got this one-track mind. It’s her way or no way at all. She can be tough, but she’s very protective of those kids. ‘It’s a bizarre limbo that revolves around money and arrangements, and Angie’s keeping Brad guessing and tortured in the meantime.’ While their messy divorce had turned a corner just months ago, with sources saying they were on good terms and even hoping for a reconciliation – it seems things have taken a turn for the worse. Now Brad, 53, is going public with claims he endured ‘12 years of hell’ during his relationship with 42-year-old Ange, giving a shocking new insight into what went wrong in the marriage.

RAD SEEN IDS DAYS ‘At first he was devastated [about the divorce], but he’s seeing things from a different perspective now, and realising this was all for the best,’ a source told Star magazine. ‘He says it was 12 years of hell. ‘In hindsight, they really had nothing in common besides great sex. He stays up nights going over what happened, and he’s analysed it in therapy. He realises his relationship with Ange was toxic from the start.’ The report goes on to reveal Brad turned to alcohol to escape the unhappiness of his marriage – resulting in the now-famous drunken fight aboard a private plane with his family last September that sparked the split. ‘He dealt with his unhappiness by drinking heavily,’ the source told Star. ‘Brad’s demons got a hold of him. That disastrous plane ride was the result of years of pent-up frustration. Even his friends noticed a change in him – there was a weariness there, like he had given up. In the end, they were living separate lives and making each other miserable. ‘He’s finally feeling like his old self again. His marriage to Angie was tough, and the divorce was even worse. But he’s come out the other side and can’t wait to see what the NI future holds.’

They had nothing in common besides good sex, a source commented. Brad now realises the relationship was toxic from the start.

‘It’s her way or no way at all. She can be tough, but she’s very protective of those kids’

F EAR S F OR A NG E

Brad and Ange’s relationship drama seems to have taken its toll on Ange, with the actress stepping out last week looking worryingly thin. Her weight has plummeted in recent years, with the stress of her marriage seeing her reportedly hit a shockingly low 39kg. But since splitting with Brad, Ange seemed to have regained some curves and looked healthier than ever – until now. ‘When Ange gets stressed, it really shows with her waistline,’ says a source. ‘And all the recent problems with Brad over the kids have clearly taken their toll. We’re all worried about her, that’s for sure.’

The marriage and break-up have taken their toll on the actress and mum-of-six, whose recent dramatic weight loss has friends worried for her wellbeing. 7

INSIDE THE BOMBSHELL SEARCH THAT HAS FOUND PATRICK MCDERMOTT ALIVE AND WELL IN MEXICO – AND THEY HAVE THE EVIDENCE TO PROVE IT

OLIVIA’S MISSING LOVER FOUND

S

ensational new ‘proof of life’ evidence appears to finally confirm Olivia Newton-John’s missing lover is alive and well – 12 years after he faked his own death. In a world exclusive, New Idea can reveal a crack team of US-based investigative journalists have tracked down Patrick McDermott to a small town in Mexico – providing picture proof that leading private investigators claim is the missing man. It’s been more than a decade since the LA-based cameraman vanished at sea during a fishing trip off the coast of California, leaving many to speculate he had orchestrated the elaborate charade to escape mounting debts. The 2005 disappearance has long haunted Olivia, who once tellingly revealed it had been ‘very hard’ and ‘human to wonder’ about what really happened to Patrick. Now it seems the legendary Aussie performer can breathe a sigh of relief with this latest development and finally move on from the mystery that has no doubt played in the back of her mind for years. News agencies,

including Coleman-Rayner – who’ve been tracking Patrick for five years as part of a gruelling investigation – tell New Idea they first uncovered the undated photograph of Patrick one month ago in the sleepy Mexican fishing town of Sayulita. The image shows a man who bears a striking resemblance to Patrick and appears to be around 60 years old – the age Patrick would be if he did not drown 12 years ago – lounging with an unidentified woman,

soaking up the beachfront view. Top Texas-based private investigator Charlie Parker, who appeared in the 2012 movie The Imposter after exposing con man Frederic Bourdin for impersonating missing teen Nicholas Barclay, confirms it’s highly likely to be Patrick

– even though authorities officially closed the case and declared him dead in 2008. ‘The widow’s peak is exact. The eyes are very similar and the ears extend down on the head the same distance. I believe it is him,’ Parker says, adding he determined a 90 per cent match between the recently uncovered picture and old photos of the former cameraman. There have been several reported sightings of Patrick in Sayulita since he vanished from an overnight fishing trip just 30 minutes before the boat was due to return to shore, leaving his bill fully paid and personal belongings stacked neatly on his bed. Making the photograph all the more intriguing is that it was found just last month on a noticeboard at the run-down El Palmar del Camaron beach campsite, where locals believe Patrick first stayed when he made his daring escape from the US more than a decade ago. ‘People return to this campsite all the time, so it wouldn’t be surprising if it was this man,’ says a local worker, who declined to be named and could not recall the pictured guest’s name. American real-estate agent Rod Rosile, who has lived in the town for 20 years, said the campsite was notorious for drifters – especially back in 2005, when the town was less touristy.

Friends say Olivia will be rocked by the news of her missing ex, but that she is likely to forgive him and move on, as she now has much bigger battles to face.

‘Almost everyone like that starts at the Camaron campsite because it’s so cheap – back then it would have been less than $3 per day. And if you want to keep to yourself, you can,’ he reveals. ‘Plus, it’s right on the beach, so if you have to live rough then it’s a beautiful place to do it. People like him would then usually take up with a local woman, or put word out that they’re available to house sit, so they have a place to stay but can keep costs down.’ Mr Rosile says the Mexican government is cracking down on American illegal immigrants and workers – but suggested that Patrick would be able to get away with it. ‘He looks like he could pass as Mexican, so he can probably still work as long as he’s careful,’ he says. ‘Especially if he’s not staying in one spot all the time.’ Mr Rosile’s remarks echo an interview last year with Emilio Oyarzabal Garcia, a long-time port officer at nearby Nuevo Vallarta, who recalled seeing Patrick just four years ago. ‘He walked past my window,’ Emilio had recalled at the time. Another source added that Patrick – who also goes by his Korean name Pat Kim – may have been able to keep his identity a secret by making friends with powerful Mexican families who’d be willing to protect him.

PATRICK MCDERMOTT THE BAFFLING CASE

ALIVE The campsite in Sayulita, where some say Patrick first stayed. The tourist charter boat the Humu Humu (right) in the Nuevo Vallarta Marina was where he was rumoured to be working.

Patrick disappeared in 2005 after failing to return from an overnight fishing trip with friends off the coast of San Pedro in Los Angeles. It was believed Patrick – who was in a nine-year relationship with ONJ – fell overboard and drowned on June 30. But as more details came to light, doubt set in. Not one of the 22 passengers on board the recreational fishing boat Freedom recall seeing Patrick fall or drown. Furthermore, he – or someone – settled his food and drink tab on board the vessel 30 minutes before it docked.

Experts say the hairline of these two men is almost exact, and there’s about a 90 per cent possibility this new photo is of Patrick.

The question of whether Patrick died, or wanted people to believe he was dead, has baffled authorities and family members for years – leading many determined investigators, such as Coleman-Rayner, to search for the missing man. Most notable was Philip Klein, hired by leading US TV show Dateline to track Patrick down. Philip claimed they had ‘concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr McDermott is alive’, tracking him to the town of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. But there had never been photographic evidence – until now. The bombshell will no doubt close the book on the mystery for 69-year-old Olivia, with friends of the star revealing she’ll be rocked by the new photo – but is ready to move on. ‘Olivia will be shocked that it’s finally come to an end, and that she can finally say: “Yes, he’s alive,”’ says a source. ‘But in saying that, she has her own battles to fight at the moment – she’ll want to just forgive him and move on.’ In an interview with Australian 60 Minutes last year, Olivia said: ‘It was very hard. He was lost at sea and nobody really knows what happened. It’s human to wonder [if he’s alive]. Those are the things in life you have to accept and let go, because whenever you go through difficult times, there are always those concerns, but... I live on...’ By Karleigh Smith and Iona Kirby Photos: Jeff Rayner/ Coleman-Rayner NI 10

SPECIAL N TIO INVESTIGA 5 It’s believed Patrick faked his death to avoid paying thousands of dollars in backdated child support payments for his son, Chance, with his former wife Yvette Nipar. In January 2009, investigators claim they found Patrick alive in Mexico and that he requested to be left alone. In April 2009, US TV show Dateline hired a team of investigators, including Philip Klein, to track down Patrick, creating a website called findpatrickmcdermott.com to help flush him out. They used IP addresses from computers they allege belonged to Patrick to trace him to a boat off the coast of Mexico. They later claimed to have made contact with a man representing Patrick, which they claimed was ‘credible’, and went on to state that they had ‘concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr McDermott is alive’. In 2016, it was first claimed that Patrick had been spotted in Sayulita. Coleman-Rayner reveal ‘proof of life’ image – the first photographic evidence since Patrick disappeared.

M

eghan Markle has vowed to fight back after new revelations about the dark side of her family were made public. It’s been revealed that several members of the Suits star’s extended family have disturbing histories of drug use, violence, racism, crime and drunken behaviour. The Markle clan – who originate from Grants Pass, Oregon – hides several black sheep, including Meghan’s half-brother Thomas Markle Jr, who was arrested for drunkenly brandishing a gun at his partner Darlene Blount in January. Now it’s further been revealed that despite the altercation, Thomas and Darlene plan to marry in the coming months – meaning Meghan will soon call a drug user associated with white supremacy her brother-in-law. Darlene’s brother Jason Blount was arrested earlier this year for heroin possession and three separate counts of theft. According to Josephine County Court documents, when police arrived at the scene: ‘He was found to be holding a straw with black residue, which he admits was that of heroin... and field [tested] as such.’ In a separate incident on June 5, Jason was caught again for stealing a $60 glass pipe from a garden store – placing the item in his trousers. His accomplice Shawn Kaschak –

also a known drug user – was arrested at the scene and, as seen in a mugshot, Shawn has a large tattoo emblazoned across his neck that is commonly worn by white supremacists, including neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members. Darlene, 36, is no stranger to domestic violence allegations, and has applied several times to the Josephine Family Court for restraining orders against her former partner Nathan for allegedly physically assaulting her and their son Matthew. The new shocking revelations about Meghan’s extended family have understandably left her ‘red-faced’ with senior royals, but sources close to the 36-year-old say she won’t let it affect her chances of marrying Prince Harry. ‘Meghan has a drunken and abusive half-brother, and he has a heroin-using future brother-in-law who hangs out with white supremacist thugs, and a dad too ashamed to go out in public,’ says a source. ‘She’s been so determined and worked very hard to win the royals over, but more of these family members keep crawling out of the woodwork. It’s getting worse and worse.’ Adds a source close to Meghan: ‘She’s said that it’s her distant family and they have nothing to do with her. She’s vowed to convince the royals that she’s worthy of being part of their family.’

t’s been a stressful week for Duchess Kate. After learning Islamic State fanatics were plotting to target four-year-old Prince George and a memory stick containing confidential information about the Queen’s security detail was found on the street, the duchess is now having to deal with fresh new scandal after cyber bandits have threatened to expose the royal family’s secret plastic surgery files. According to a US report, internet hackers known as The Dark Overlord have claimed to have gained access to computers belonging to a top London surgeon. The group – who claim there are some members of the royal family in their plastic surgery bounty – are threatening to reveal intimate photos, including boob jobs, and much more, unless they are provided with a hefty sum. However, this isn’t the first time the British royals have faced a plastic surgery scandal. According to the National

The surgeon – known only as Dr X – claims to have given Prince Charles’ wife Camilla a tummy tuck before their 2005 wedding. He also claims that the seemingly natural beauty Kate has undergone two nose jobs. ‘The first was after graduation, but it was slightly off-kilter, so adjustments were made in 2011,’ revealed the shock report. Not even the late Princess Diana is safe, with Dr X claiming she experimented with Botox just months before her death. “She was obsessed with maintaining a youthful look,” spills a source. When Kate found out last week that evil extremists posted a picture of young George outside his school, discussing his daily schedule with the comment ‘school starts early,’ she was understandably terrified – so claims of secret surgeries exposed is the last thing the Duchess needs. My biggest issue before the challenge was uneven skin tone and tired looking skin. I was also interested to see if the challenge would help overcome the red tone and visible blood vessels that I had in certain areas on my face.

I saw a massive change in my skin after just 11 days of using Natural Instinct. I was self conscious about uneven skin tone around my nose, under my eyes & chin area. For the first time since I was about 14, I actually feel like I don’t need to put on make up.

Karl and Lisa took time out to have lunch in Sydney and talk things over, but sources say the pair were anything but friendly toward each other.

THEY MAY SMILE FOR THE CAMERAS, BUT SOURCES SAY THESE TWO ARE ANYTHING BUT UNITED

THE TRUTH BEHIND

K

arl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson were all smiles for social media last week, sharing photos of their happy reunion lunch. But behind the scenes, our spies tell a very different story. In what seemed to be a ‘heated exchange’, the pair spent the majority of their three-hour meeting ‘clearly frustrated, speaking in hushed tones’ – a vast contrast to the camaraderie they have portrayed to their followers. ‘They were frosty,’ says our eyewitness. ‘That selfie was just for show. That lunch was very intense and neither of them seemed very friendly toward the other.’

15

In what was apparently their first catch-up since Lisa quit Today after she was refused the same pay as Karl, the pair took to Instagram with a beaming selfie as evidence that their friendship had survived the bitter salary feud. But according to onlookers at Cafe Sydney, there appeared to be no love lost between the former co-workers. ‘At first they seemed to be trying to clear the air and move on from everything that’s been said and done, but the longer it went on, the more terse their exchange became,’ says the spy. ‘Poor Lisa looked really frustrated and they didn’t look like they were agreeing on much at all, maybe it was still too soon.’ It was halfway through the surprising scene that the

KARL & LISA’S

breakfast television stars were joined by Lisa’s husband Peter FitzSimons, who stepped in to defuse the fiery exchange. ‘He could tell something was up and seemed to be giving some advice, and it worked too,’ the source reveals. ‘They both just sat there listening to him for ages, but then in a bit of self promotion he gave Karl a copy of his new book and asked him to pose for a photo so he could plug it. It was a bit awkward to watch really.’ It was also during this time that the former rugby player asked the duo to pose for the photo. Lisa later posted it on Instagram, with the caption: ‘The best lunch today with this guy.’

‘It seemed like a bit of a PR move in all honesty,’ says the spy. ‘In reality, neither of them looked like they wanted to be there at all.’ Once Peter excused himself, leaving Lisa and Karl to work out their differences, the mood soon turned sombre. ‘Karl had finished a bottle of Chardonnay by this stage and Lisa was sipping cocktails throughout, but even the alcohol didn’t loosen the mood. Once Peter had gone it all got very serious,’ the spy reveals. ‘They may have fooled a few people into thinking they are mates, but I doubt they’ll catch up again anytime soon.’ NI

It’s believed the couple made the surprise announcement to family and friends last week, revealing their ‘one last attempt’ to fall pregnant had given them the miracle news they had been waiting for. ‘Jen and Justin decided to make it their mission for the last few months of 2017 – to try and fall pregnant by Christmas,’ a source tells New Idea. ‘They can’t believe that their baby dream has finally come true – it’s a miracle. ‘Justin has always been really supportive of Jen and happy to follow her lead on whether they had kids or not. When she said she was keen to try one last time, of course he said yes. ‘They’re still in the very early stages so need to wait a bit longer before going public – but they’re very hopeful.’ In the past, Jen has lashed out at suggestions that she chose her Hollywood career over becoming a mum – revealing she’d love to fall pregnant.

Sources reveal Jen and husband Justin are not sitting on just one announcement, but are expecting double the joy!

THE FRIENDS STAR IS SET TO BECOME A MUM AT LAST, WITH A VERY EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT

Jen’s big news ‘WE’RE HAVING A BABY!’

‘This continually is said about me: that I was so careerdriven and focused on myself; that I don’t want to be a mother and how selfish that is,’ she told Allure. Denying that’s the case, she says: ‘No. Even saying it gets me a little tight in my throat.’ But in an interesting twist, it seems Jen’s pregnancy may turn to double joy. Sources reveal the couple had been investigating adopting a baby from Puerto Rico, which was recently ravaged by Hurricane Maria, prompting a humanitarian crisis and leaving a reported 900 dead. Jen has already donated US$1million of her own money to relief efforts in the region, but had also decided to go one step further and give a child a home. ‘Adopting from Puerto Rico was their plan B in case their last effort to fall pregnant didn’t work out,’ says a source. ‘But they haven’t closed the door on adopting from the region, and have gone through all the paperwork and legalities. ‘While giving a million dollars was seen as very generous, Jen was more than happy to do it – but still wants to do more. Jen and Justin have

JEN’S HEART OF GOLD

Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin, J.Lo and Jen are all big givers to charities that support children.

A-Lister Jen supports lots of charities around the world. As well as her gift to The Ricky Martin Foundation, she’s helped the St Jude Children’s Research hospital, the 2010 Haiti Relief Appeal and the Friends of El Faro children’s charity.

all the money in the world – but more importantly they have a lot of love to give. ‘While they’re excited about their pregnancy news, adopting a child in need is still something that’s very close to their hearts. The humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico has hit them hard and really pulled at Jen’s heart strings – so they’re still considering adoption as well.’ To help research adoption in Puerto Rico, Jen turned to celebrity pals J.Lo and Ricky Martin. Half of Jen’s US$1million donation was made directly to The Ricky Martin Foundation, which is funding and coordinating efforts

to rebuild the country. The Puerto Rican singer personally thanked Jen for her generous donation, and was the first person the former Friends star called when she and Justin decided to adopt. ‘Ricky is really close to all the relief efforts,’ says a source. ‘Every day, Ricky is seeing children left homeless by the disaster and hearing of orphanages which are at crisis point. He was only too happy to help and offer his advice when Jen reached out to him.’ Jen, meanwhile, is also talking to fellow Puerto Rican celebrity Jennifer Lopez, who’s joined forces to raise money with her

former husband, Marc Anthony – who interestingly also owns an orphanage in Puerto Rico. ‘Jen and J.Lo have been close friends for years, and she reached out to J.Lo and Marc to discuss adoption options,’ says the source. ‘Marc is in the perfect place to help coordinate an adoption. Americans can easily adopt from Puerto Rico as it’s a territory of the United States, so Jen shouldn’t run into too many problems with red tape.’ Adds another source: ‘They’re just working through the early stages of Jen’s pregnancy before they make firm decisions about adopting. They’re just taking things one day at a time.’ NI

HUGH AND DEB’S ADOPTION JOY! If anyone knows the true joy of being adoptive parents, it’s Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness. And now, after many years of hard work and tireless campaigning, the Aussie duo are set to celebrate some exciting adoption news.

Deb and Hugh, here with Ava and Oscar, believe adoption was their destiny and everything happens for a reason.

As the couple launched their #ahomeforeverychild awareness campaign, through their Adopt Change organisation, last week, it was revealed talks to reopen adoption between India and Australia were in their final stages. The news will no doubt bring a smile to the faces of Hugh, 49, and Deb, 61, who have long fought to make adoption in Australia an easier, more streamlined process. ’Once you have an empathy, once you’re a mother, when you meet these children with no-one there to watch their back, it’s heartbreaking,’ says Deb. ‘Since I’ve been involved in this issue, I have found it is

one of the most complex, emotionally charged issues around but I was organically attracted to it. There are so many kids caught in the system and we have the lowest adoption rate in the world.’ Forced to move to the US in order to adopt their children Oscar, 17, and Ava, 12, after becoming frustrated with the Australian system, Hugh says it was their ‘destiny’ to become adoptive parents. ‘I don’t think of them as adopted – they’re our children. Deb and I are believers in – I suppose you could call it destiny. We feel things happened the way they are meant to,’ says Hugh.

rincess Mary and Prince Frederik’s untold love story has been revealed for the first time, with the couple sharing all the secrets of their fairytale romance in an official new biography. Released to celebrate the royal heir’s upcoming 50th birthday, Under The Bar unveils every swoon-worthy detail of their early days of dating – and how Fred knew his Aussie love was ‘The One’ after the first night they met. ‘To me there was something inexplicably attractive about her,’ Fred tells. ‘First her very calm manner, the way she moved, her dark voice, which was very fascinating.’ In the book, Mary also tells the remarkable story of how a fortune teller at Sydney’s Paddington Markets predicted that she would meet a foreign man and become a star – just two weeks before their fairytale first encounter in 2000. Revealing that the tarot reader was ‘looking very determined and directly’ at her as she strolled through the market, Tasmanian-born Mary says she was compelled to let the woman read her future. ‘It became an interesting hour!’ Mary reveals in Under The Bar. ‘The woman told me that I would leave the workplace where I had recently been employed and that I would soon meet a very worldly man. He was a foreign man and I would become very famous, a star, she even said.’ The woman went on to tell Mary that people ‘will come to know who you are, they will see you and hear you’, telling the 18

then-28-year-old that she would also move to Europe. The couple – who are now parents to four children – then go on to talk about their fateful first meeting. Revealing how Mary was supposed to go to a farewell party for an acquaintance, her friends instead persuaded her to go out with them. The group went to Sydney bar Slip Inn, where Fred and several European royals – in town for the Sydney Olympics – were partying. The book goes on to reveal that a smoking Fred sat next to Mary and tried to make her believe that he was a Danish Olympic athlete! ‘We talked so well!’ Fred reveals in the book. The jet-lagged prince then attempted to make his way home – but wound up on the dance floor with Mary, where they danced and talked all night. ‘I did not go home until three to four o’clock. Frederik dropped me off at Porter Street in a taxi, and before it disappeared round the next corner, he asked for my phone number,’ Mary reveals in the book. ‘I gave it to him and got a goodnight kiss on the cheek.’ The Tasmanian-born beauty reveals that despite being in love with a future king, their relationship was as sweet and uncomplicated as any new love. With long-distance keeping them apart for much of their first year of dating, Mary says that she walked the streets of Sydney listening to Dido’s Here With Me when she was missing him a lot. To stay in touch, the pair spent hours talking on the phone, sending emails and handwritten letters.

Mary also tells that she sent Fred the book A Grief Observed by Narnia author C.S. Lewis, to help him through the grief of losing his grandmother – Queen Ingrid – the same way it had helped her through her mother’s death only years earlier. The couple say many of their early conversations centered around music – with Fred ‘happy to learn’ that Mary is a fan of his favourite artist Led Zeppelin, while she taught her new beau to appreciate Robbie Williams. After their relationship was made public, Mary says she moved to Paris so that it would be easier to see Fred. She also recounts a romantic surprise from Fred on New Year’s Eve in 2001, when she flew to Hamburg and was picked up by Fred’s good friend Jeppe Handwerk and his girlfriend Birgitte, before the three of them drove north to Denmark. ‘And in some dark place, where it was just snowing and snowing, we made a pitstop and there was Frederik suddenly. Then I hopped into his car,’ Mary tells.

The Crown Prince and Princess – and parents of four children – are still very much in love.

Just two years later, Fred proposed to Mary in a ‘tiny old church’. But the prince’s close childhood friend Ellen Hillingso says he was never the same after his first meeting in Sydney with Mary, all those years earlier – and that a trip with the Sirius Patrol that same year inspired him. ‘He came back a changed man, and I’ll say that it’s now coincidence that these big events – Greenland, meeting Mary and Queen Ingrid’s death – are all in the year where he finds something authentic within himself,’ she says. ‘It’s almost mythical. During all times this man has gone on long trips to find himself.’ NI

, PRINCESS ISABELLA S SOCIAL MEDIA SCANDAL While Mary and Fred have spent the week reminiscing about their love with the release of the Crown Prince’s official biography, they’ve faced scandal at home with eldest daughter Princess Isabella. The 10-year-old royal has hit the headlines after she used the social media app Musical.ly to post pictures of the inside of her bedroom and the Danish royal yacht Dannebrog. In one video, her six year-old sister Josephine shouts at her: ‘Are you a princess?’ To which Isabella replies: ‘Yah, I am!’ ‘Frederik and Mary were very upset because Isabella’s account was supposed to be closed, but somehow got out into the public arena,’ a friend tells New Idea. The images and videos were leaked to the world, leading to a security panic within the Copenhagen palace. A royal spokesperson reveals: ‘Isabella has used the Musical.ly app precisely like many other children in Isabella with the Denmark and all over the world. That US singer Brandon material from a closed profile has Beal (above), and now been shared is very regrettable. with her mum. We are looking into it now, to find out how it could happen.’

TORI & ASH IT’S OVER!

The happy couple are still in love after 20 years.

She’s been through hell and back with her family, and now all Tori wants is to settle down with the man of her dreams. She thought that man was Ash (George Mason), but he doesn’t seem to be the person she initially thought he was. The whole situation with Mick (Kristian Schmid) and Ash has made Tori (Penny McNamee) question her perception of the mechanic, is he a different guy now?

The young doctor feels that Ash crossed a line when he kidnapped Mick, a line that Ash fails to see. When he finally gets to apologise to Tori for what he did, she can’t see how they can move past this. Tori thinks Ash has an anger inside of him that she cannot accept and she decides they should take a break from each other. It’s over between them.

Tori confronts Ash about his rash decisions involving Mick.

He will always be there for her, there’s nothing she’s more sure about. ‘Their marriage is solid because they genuinely have a love and deep respect for each other,’ Kestie, 39, explains.

‘They are always on the same page and back each other up when it comes to raising their kids, so they are rarely at odds there, and if they are, they don’t let the kids be aware of it. They also have managed to keep the passion and electricity alive in their relationship, and they still find each other as attractive and hot as they did when they first met – which helps things along too!’ NI

The show’s 2017 ‘power couple’ – who first became friends and allies in the Samoan jungle earlier this year – couldn’t be happier with their pregnancy news. ‘It’s definitely a big surprise, but we are delighted,’ grins 37-year-old Mark, a former Australian Army special operations commander. ‘I always knew I wanted to be a father, but I chose not to go down that path. Being a soldier for 16 years, I was lucky to come out intact after so many tours of duty – and to start a family, well that’s just a huge deal!’ Diminutive Sam, already sporting a large baby bump 18 weeks into her pregnancy, adds: ‘We may not have won on Survivor, but we came away with a much bigger prize. I certainly didn’t go on the show expecting to find love. It was not my intention, but I guess it was a really positive thing to come out with.’

BINDI’S SEXY NEW LOOK THE LOVED-UP WARRIOR UPSETS HER MUM!

Steve Irwin’s daughter has a huge following around the world.

he’s known as the ultimate girl-nextdoor, but Bindi Irwin well and truly cast aside her wholesome image for Halloween this year. The 19-year-old wildlife warrior stunned fans by posing as Lois Lane to boyfriend Chandler Powell’s Clark Kent in a sexy Instagram snap. And while followers of the daughter of the late Steve Irwin were quick to compliment the couple on the loved-up photo, there was one person who wasn’t too impressed with the Australia Zoo ambassador’s new look – her mum Terri Irwin! ‘Terri wasn’t very happy with Bindi’s sexy Halloween photo and made her feelings known to Bindi and Chandler,’ says a source.

‘She loves Bindi and Chandler to bits, but feels they crossed the line with Bindi’s costume and that it was just too raunchy and over the top.’ Gazing up at Chandler, 20, Bindi wore a plunging white shirt and tight, high-waisted pencil skirt – completing the look by sweeping her hair into a bun, donning a pair of spectacles and wearing a sexy red lipstick. It was a far cry from Bindi’s usual loose khaki pants and makeup-free face. So it’s no wonder that 53-year-old Terri was so concerned about the young lovers potentially damaging the clean-cut Irwin brand. ‘Terri feels it just wasn’t right for their image, and that Bindi has a lot of young fans who look up to her and this

isn’t the right message to send,’ spilled the insider. So perhaps it’s no surprise that just days later, protective Terri was spotted along with Bindi’s young brother Robert, 13, chaperoning the couple on a date night in Brisbane. And while Bindi is happy to listen to her mum’s advice, sources close to the Irwins say that Chandler couldn’t help but feel a bit put out that Terri doesn’t trust them. ‘Chandler had his nose put out of joint a little with it because he thought it was just harmless fun, but respected Terri’s feelings in the end. ‘Bindi is Terri’s little girl – and Chandler knows she only has Bindi’s best NI interests at heart.’

ifteen years, 12,075 hours of live TV and 3450 shows gives David ‘Kochie’ Koch the title of one of the longest-running Australian breakfast TV show hosts. For a numbers man, the financial expert loved calculating these statistics. Visiting Kochie and his wife Libby’s city apartment, the couple shares the good, bad and hilarious moments of Kochie’s Sunrise tenure.

Meeting her hubby more than 40 years ago, Libby – who reveals she watches him every morning – says she never expected to be married to a TV star. ‘I’ve been around well before all this happened. We’ll be married 39 years in January,’ Libby explains. ‘I’m so proud of him. I pull him up when he needs it and when he works too hard. He’s definitely surprised me, but I always knew he was headed for big things.’ Surprisingly, Kochie had a controversial start on Sunrise. ‘I was only supposed to fill in for three months, and it’s been 15 years. After a year, the then managing director of Seven approached the board to get me fired because they thought I was too opinionated. Thankfully, I’m still here!’ Now, he’s a household name. ‘Because I’ve got a bit of a nickname, everyone yells my name – it’s “Kochie!”’ he laughs. ‘It’s the weirdest thing when someone brings their 14-yearold child up to me and says: “I started watching you breastfeeding my daughter here, and look at her now!” It makes me feel really old!’ A celebrated finance journalist, Kochie, 61, knows he divides people: ‘People either love me or hate me because I have an opinion, but even the ones who disagree with me, they respect I know what I’m talking about. They may say: “He’s a boofhead and I disagree with him, but he’s good at finance and politics.”’ The father-of-four also admits he has no regrets. ‘What you see is what you get. Over three hours of live TV a day, you can’t pretend to be someone you’re not. And we’ve won 14 straight years of breakfast TV, so something is working,’ he explains. ‘Fifteen years ago when we started, we were 10 per cent of the Today show’s audience and we reeled them in in 18 months, and have won every year since. ‘Plus, at breakfast, you can’t be beige – you’ve got to make

people think and laugh.’ While he may have no regrets, he does wish he hadn’t embarrassed Libby so much. ‘He loves to embellish a story, so sometimes there have been a few irate text messages,’ Libby recalls, smiling. Adds Kochie: ‘Years ago, I’d gotten back to the office and there was a text from Libby saying: “How dare you?!” I sent her some flowers to say sorry and waited for the flowers to be delivered before I went home!’ The other women in Kochie’s life, his co-hosts, he cherishes. ‘I relate to women, and I’ve been really lucky because the

‘At breakfast, you can’t be beige – you’ve got to make people think and laugh’ women on the team – Mel [Doyle], Sam [Armytage], Nat [Barr], Eddy [Bartholomew] – are fantastic,’ he raves. ‘The culture of the program is so strong – it doesn’t get any better. That’s not to say we don’t have arguments, or you’re sick to death of each other, but you can have your say and no-one ever takes offence. And above all, we take huge pride in our work and definitely love to have a laugh.’ Kochie is grateful for starting on Sunrise later in his career. ‘This job has not changed us,’ Kochie says, before admitting Libby would never let him get a big head. ‘Sunrise came to us relatively late, I was in my

mid-forties, and we’d already had a life, our own business and kids [Georgina, Alexander, Samantha and Brianna], so we’ve never been carried away with the whole TV stuff. We basically have no close friends in the media. Our closest friends are all the friends we had before.’ When talk turns to stresses of the job, Kochie won’t hear of it – admitting he feels lucky and cherishes his position. ‘TV is a bubble, it’s so incredibly privileged. You can never complain – you get so many opportunities.’ From reporting on war-torn countries to interviewing a grumpy Harrison Ford, Kochie’s seen and done it all. ‘If you can use this job to get things achieved, it’s completely worth it. If after 15 years I could only say I loved meeting Bette Midler – it would have been an absolute waste. ‘For me, the other stuff is more important. Sunrise transformed the organ transplant system in Australia. It has allowed us to get on board with Youth Off The Streets and the Koch Centre For Youth, and help the Port Adelaide community. I just really love to help people.’ By Ali Cromarty Main photo: Lawrence Furzey NI

The Olympic equestrian is coming to Australia in January to continue her role as patron of the Magic Millions Racing Women. ‘I can’t wait to return!’ Zara reveals exclusively to New Idea. ‘Magic Millions falls at a great time of the year – it is nice to have a little escape from the depths of a UK winter and enjoy the sunshine and incredible beaches the Gold Coast has to offer, all while taking part in and witnessing some of the best equine events on offer anywhere around the world,’ she gushes. And Zara – who in 2012 carried the Olympic flame – couldn’t be prouder of the Gold Coast event. ‘It feels very special to be part of something that is a world first. The Magic Millions Racing Women initiative is all about getting women involved in racehorse ownership,’ she explains. Despite her royal pedigree, the 36-yearold is passionate about following her own path. ‘It is very important to have your own career and direction that you want to take, while also encompassing all the values your family has taught you,’ she says. A work ethic that she will no doubt instil in Mia – her threeyear-old daughter with husband Mike Tindall. In fact, Mia may

Due to her own fertility issues, Samara felt compelled to help others – and she also got sister Sarah involved.

hen Samara van der Worp and her now husband Wynn went on their first date, he asked her if she had children. Nodding, she told him she had 10. ‘I thought it might scare him off, but it didn’t,’ 32-yearold Samara laughs, going on to explain that while all 10 are biologically hers, only one, Alex, lives with her. The Brisbane mum is an egg donor, and over the past six years she’s donated 15 times – resulting in nine children for families unable to have kids of their own. ‘I became interested in egg donation after my own rocky experience having a child,’ Samara tells New Idea. ‘I have a hormone deficiency, which makes it very difficult for me

to get pregnant, and it took five years to conceive Alex. It was a long and painful journey and I wondered, with egg donation, if I could take that pain away from another desperate family.’ As she looked into it and then made the decision to donate to a woman who’d been trying for a baby for 15 years, her sister Sarah was by her side. ‘Sarah’s seen all my struggles and always been very supportive,’ Samara says. ‘About six months after I donated eggs, she talked to me about whether she could do it too. I told her if you can, you should, and our journey began there.’ ‘I had three children very easily,’ Sarah, 34, reveals. ‘I know how lucky I am and if I have eggs I’m not using, it makes sense to share them.’ Over the next six years, the pair met hundreds of childless families and went through

numerous, often painful, egg retrievals to help some of them. ‘I woke up from one retrieval to see 32 written on my hand, which was the number of eggs they’d extracted,’ Samara remembers. ‘My nurse was so excited it was such a huge number, but I’d seen the lady next to me had zero written on her hand. She was bawling and her pain killed me. I know what it feels like and it inspired me to keep donating.’ As their babies were born all over Australia and New Zealand, Sarah and Samara developed a huge extended family.

I did when I was her age. I love it and feel so lucky to have these families in my life.’ Alex, now eight, loves it too – calling the kids his ‘egg cousins’. ‘He says they are our ‘chosen family’ because they are the people we chose to help,’ says Samara, smiling. Most recently Samara helped Paula and John Kavanaugh have baby Liam. ‘We’d been trying for a baby for about five years and two previous egg donors hadn’t

‘Her pain killed me. I know what it feels like and it inspired me to keep donating’ ‘There’s no expectation to stay in touch, but the women I’ve helped have become great friends with me and often each other,’ Samara says. ‘We have a Facebook group and we meet up annually. There’s one little girl, Ruby, who looks just like

worked,’ Paula, 44, says. ‘When Sammy’s eggs gave us Liam, it was the gift that made our lives complete. I can never express how grateful we are, and I was doubly lucky because Sammy’s also become... Liam’s godmother.’ Months later, Paula asked

Sarah (top, with family) and her sister (inset, with husband Wynn and son Alex) not only have their immediate families to love, they also have a large extended family too!

Samara if she would consider donating again to give Liam a little brother or sister, but for once, Samara said no. ‘Wynn and I were going through IVF and at last we’d fallen pregnant,’ she explains. ‘Of course I still wanted to help Paula, so I spoke to Sarah about whether she’d do it instead.’ Sarah, who has three kids of her own and two stepchildren – and has helped create nine more babies – agreed straightaway. ‘It meant Liam would share a genetic link with his sibling because Samara and I share genetics,’ Sarah says, adding: ‘It means his brother will also be his cousin, which is quite weird!’ The process was successful on the first embryo transfer and

Paula is now 12 weeks pregnant with a little boy. ‘Samara and Sarah have given us an opportunity we never would have had otherwise,’ Paula says. ‘They are so humble about it though, and both tell me it’s no big deal. It’s obviously a huge deal for us!’ Sadly, Samara lost her baby at 12 weeks, but she refuses to let her sadness impact on how she feels for other families. ‘I’m always excited for my recipients,’ she smiles. ‘I’d love another baby, but if I can’t make it happen for myself, why wouldn’t I help someone else? They deserve it as much as I do, and actually their happiness takes away some of my sadness.’ By Emma Levett NI

Luke Jacobz ‘MY

HOLLYWOOD HELL’ B

THE STAR TALKS ABOUT THE REALITIES OF MAKING IT IN HOLLYWOOD AND HIS NEW SHOW INSTANT HOTEL

ack in Australia to host Channel Seven’s latest reality offering Instant Hotel, Luke Jacobz is happy to be home. And there’s one person especially excited to see him – his nephew Jake! ‘I’ve got a 12-year-old nephew here, so if I’m going to be in Australia, I need to be close to him. He’s my man!’ Luke, 36, gushes to New Idea. ‘I love looking after him, he’s a great little kid, but he also loves when I go because I come back with presents. He’s always like: “When are you going away next?”’ Luke made the move to Los Angeles soon after his time as host of The X Factor Australia came to an end in 2015. It’s given the former Home And Away actor a fresh start. ‘I’m auditioning, doing classes, trying to get as much experience over there as I can, because I haven’t been acting for a while and it’s one of those things you really need to stay

on top of,’ Luke explains. ‘But the auditions, they’re a hard process because you’re going up against thousands of people, compared to Australia where you’re probably only going up against a couple hundred. ‘Last year I was one of 10,000 people who went for an audition – it’s a different world. I can’t remember what the role was for – I’ve done that many auditions. But still, that was quite confronting when I got the call saying: “You did a great job, but don’t forget, you’re going up against a lot of people.” It was a bit of a reality check.’ Starting his career again has had its tougher moments. ‘If I do a casting in Australia, you walk in, meet the casting director and I’ll know them so I’ll sit and have a chat with them, whereas in the states I had one audition where I literally opened the door and they said: “Thanks very much but no,”’ Luke recalls. ‘I obviously didn’t

have the right look. I spent three days working on some scripts to open a door, hear the word “no” and walk away. That happens.’ Luke’s grown a thick skin to cope with the rejection. ‘It’s definitely character building and you just put your chin up and you keep going and think: “OK, what’s the next one?” ‘When the opportunity for Instant Hotel came along, I jumped at it. I’d been having so many auditions, but I wasn’t actually working, so it was really nice to set

The Bachelor’s Keira Maguire’s cult connection

When Instant Hotel heads to Byron Bay, homeowners Sam and James reveal their home’s very interesting history to their hotel guests. Years before they purchased the estate, it belonged to a polygamous cult in which one man had nine wives and 63 children. The man who ran the cult – dubbed ‘The Seaside Sect’ – was Alistah Laishkochav, father of reality star Keira Maguire. Keira was removed from the cult at age five and has since distanced herself from her father, stating to another publication: ‘Alistah Laishkochav is not relevant to who I am nor does he define me.’ 36

Each couple will judge their stay, before moving onto the next hotel destination – and the competition is fierce. ‘There were four people that butt heads so much that I was called in numerous times to mediate or at least keep an eye on what was going on,’ Luke explains. ‘At one point, things got so heated, it was so awkward I was about to leave I was so uncomfortable! I didn’t know where to look, but I had to stand there as the cameras rolled. I was sweating and shaking! My work was cut out for me. I’m not a confrontational person at all and situations like that happen more than once.’ By Ali Cromarty NI

The actor is known for his role on Home And Away (below), and he and nephew Jake share a close relationship.

H

e may only be 25, but Freddie Highmore already has one of the most impressive CVs in Hollywood. The London-born actor received international acclaim after starring alongside Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet in Finding Neverland, which then led to Freddie, at age 13, being cast in the title role of the remake of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. Most recently, he was the star of the TV horror drama Bates Motel, before landing the role of Dr Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor. With parents in the industry – his mum Sue Latimer is Daniel Radcliffe’s agent and dad Edward is an actor – they tried to dissuade Freddie from acting. ‘My parents’ influence was more

encouraging me not to do acting. I went to university and took time away from acting, before going back with Bates Motel,’ Freddie explains. ‘I did that so it was more of an active choice for me to pursue acting as an adult, as opposed to it being something I ended up doing because I did it as a kid.’ To prepare for the role of Shaun, a surgeon with autism and Savant syndrome, Freddie studied hard. ‘We felt a great deal of pressure and responsibility with the character,’ says Freddie. ‘We wanted to portray Shaun authentically, but at the same time, it’s necessary to recognise that Shaun should not be held up as a representative for all people who have autism.’

Q

Why are cakes cooled in the pan for 5 to 10 minutes before being turned out onto a rack to cool? Can’t I just my leave my cake in the tin to cool? Georgina, via email.

A

Cakes are usually cooled for a short while in the pan so that the structure of the cake has time to become more stable. If the cake is still warm when it’s turned out onto a rack the fats or oils are still liquid and help it to slip out of the tin more easily. If you allow the cake to cool in the tin it may stick and be more difficult to remove, also the trapped heat steams the cake slightly and makes the texture more dense.

Clever ways to create a natural look for the warmer days ahead

H

eat and outdoor events make summer make-up a chore. Celebrity make-up artist and Co-Creator of Mikatvonk Makeup, Jay Jay Rauwenhoff, shares these tips for a natural make-up look.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

‘Make this your summer beauty mantra!’ says Jay Jay. Summer is the season for embracing a natural-looking glow. You want your natural skin to shine through. ‘The “no make-up” make-up look requires make-up! It’s getting the balance right and using natural, subtle tones, that is key to pulling off a natural finish,’ says Jay Jay.

Beauty

LIGHTEN UP

Swap your heavy foundation for a lighter option. ‘That doesn’t mean that you need to step out the door with nothing on your skin. Use a tinted moisturiser or, dilute your foundation with a little moisturiser to make your own,’ says Jay Jay. If you have a dry skin type or mature skin, this tip can help through any season. For those with oily skin, Jay Jay recommends mixing your foundation with primer instead, for sheer, longer-lasting coverage. Mikatvonk Cover Max Hydrating Foundation, $40.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR MUMS ON THE GO

WHAT TO BUY FOR BABY Prepare for your newborn’s arrival – without blowing cash on things you don’t really need

B

efore you hit the shops, think practically about these first months of your baby’s life. ‘Your baby’s primary needs are closeness, warmth and comfort, to be fed and have a safe place to sleep,’ says Lois Wattis, midwife and author of New Baby 101 – A Midwife’s Guide For New Parents. Once you realise that your baby needs surprisingly few things to fill those basic needs, you can head to the shops with a clearer idea of where to start.

Sleep like a baby In these first months your baby will spend most of her time sleeping, so it’s worth thinking about where you want her to be for both her day and night snoozes. Whichever options you’re considering, check out sidsandkids.org for more information on safe sleeping.

COT

The most common choice is to buy a cot, ensuring that it meets the current Australian mandatory standards. A cot can be placed in your bedroom (and this is the recommendation by SIDS and Kids for the first six to 12 months) or the baby’s own room, and it can last up to the toddler stage.

BASSINET

A bassinet has a shorter life span, as it’s only suitable for a baby who can’t roll or move around. Be aware that bassinet safety standards are only

voluntary, so you’ll need to do your research first.

CO-SLEEPING

There are ways to do this safely in your own bed, or you can buy a co-sleeping attachment for your bed.

BABY MONITORS

Some parents find monitors helpful, especially if baby is in her own room, while others find them disruptive. The main thing is that you’re aware of your baby’s movements during all those sleeping hours.

BEDDING

For safety, SIDS and Kids recommends avoiding any pillows, cushions, bumpers, toys or extra blankets.

HAN D Y T OOLS

Many parents find baby monitors useful.

NEW

Kids

Warmth & comfort

Tossing up about cloth or disposable nappies? Either way, you’ll definitely need to have some on hand straight away. And you’ll also need these:

CHANGE TABLE

Whether you choose to buy a change table or use a portable mat, it’s a good idea to be as prepared as possible for her homecoming. ‘Have the area set up, the packages open and ready to grab because there are bound to be some catastrophic disasters in the nappy zone at some point,’ says Lois.

BATHING EQUIPMENT A baby bath will be useful for the first few months. You’ll need to have some face washers and towels on hand, too. You’ll only need a few grow suits for your baby – she’ll outgrow newborn sizes fast.

Out & about Everything you’ll need to transport her home… and away

CAR SEAT

Feeding time

Some parents have a clear idea about whether their baby will be breastfed, bottle-fed or a combination, while others aren’t sure what to expect. So, do you need to buy anything ahead of time?

BREAST PUMP

There are times when pumping breastmilk into a bottle is necessary: if you’ve been advised due to your baby’s needs, or if Dad is taking over an evening feed, for example. It’s an individual decision based on you and your baby. If you’re not sure, you can always buy or hire a pump after baby is born.

BOTTLES

If you’re planning to bottle-feed wholly or partially, you’ll need some bottles, teats and sterilising equipment at the ready. However, try not to go overboard. ‘I discourage people from buying too much equipment,’ says Lois. If you’re also breastfeeding then you may be advised to use a specific teat that’s less likely to interfere with this.

CUSHIONS

While you can feed your baby anywhere, some parents find having feeding cushions and some good back support on hand to be helpful.

You have two choices for the car: a capsule (which you can easily move in and out of the car) or a rear-facing baby seat (which can convert to a front-facing seat later on). Either way, you’ll need to have it bought and fitted ahead of time.

CARRIER

Try some on for comfort, do your safety research, and think about what will suit your movements best.

PRAM

‘Invest in a good pram,’ suggests Lois. ‘The rocking motion is really good for getting your baby to sleep, and you can use the pram when you’re out or at home if you choose one that fits in the landscape of your house.’ NI

BETTER TONIGHT! Experts reveal simple strategies for putting your baby to bed

I

t’s 3am and your baby is crying. Should you pick her up? Let her cry but check on her? Feed her? An infant sleep coach would know what to do. These experts make their living by helping parents get their babies into a healthy sleep routine with custom plans, phone calls and overnight stays. We asked four seasoned coaches to pull back the sheets on their snooze-inducing wisdom. CREATE A UNITED FRONT ‘Often it’s the dad who wants the mum to stop feeding the baby to sleep, while the mum feels in her gut that the baby still needs night-time feeds,’ says Kim West, author of Good Night, Sleep Tight. ‘I’ve also had scenarios where Mum wants to get on a better schedule but Dad really can’t take the crying,’ says Kim. Parents need to get on the same page – put some time aside to discuss a plan you can both support. DON’T RESPOND TOO QUICKLY Your baby’s sounds might just mean she’s mildly frustrated or settling in her sleep – and 66

checking on her can make the problem worse, especially if she wasn’t awake to begin with. ‘After the baby turns four months old, we teach parents to take a breath before deciding whether to go in,’ says Jennifer Waldburger, co-founder of Sleepy Planet, a sleep-coaching service, and the co-author of The Sleepeasy Solution. If your baby is crying out because she is in pain or true discomfort, you’ll know by her loud wail, which will ramp up instead of quieting down. DON’T COMPARE What worked for another baby might not help yours. ‘For every child I work with, I take into account her temperament, the parents’ personalities, and their lifestyle,’ says Brooke Nalle, founder of Sleepy on Hudson, a sleep-coaching service. ‘I may coach the parents to stay in the room while soothing their child back down, because some babies need to have a parent there. We work on gradually spacing out the soothing until the baby learns to do it on her own.’ With other bubs, Brooke might have the parent leave

the room after saying goodnight. ‘Sometimes having a parent there is the worst thing you can do, because it overstimulates the child,’ Brooke says. START A BEDTIME ROUTINE Hold off on sleep training until baby is three months or older, sleep experts advise, but create a healthy bedtime routine and naptime rituals from day one. ‘Dim the lights 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime to help bring your baby’s cortisol levels

down,’ advises sleep coach Ingrid Prueher. Then give your baby a bath and her last feed of the day, followed by a bedtime story and a song. Do this consistently every night, and it will be easier for you to sleep train your baby if the NI time comes, Ingrid says.

WATER WORKS

Keeping hydrated is essential for little ones. Here’s how to keep bub topped up

Text: Kate Di Prima. Kate Di Prima is a an accredited practising dietitian and spokesperson for The Dietitians Association of Australia.

D

id you know water is actually more important to the human body than food? Newborn babies’ bodies are made up of around 75 per cent water, decreasing to around 60 per cent as they mature to adulthood. And though it can be hard to calculate the exact amount of fluid required each day, the following can be used as a guide: FOR BABIES: • 0-6 months: 0.7L per day (from breast milk or formula). • 7-12 months: 0.8L/day (from breast milk, formula, food, plain water and other beverages, including 0.6L as fluids). Up until the age of six months the fluid in breast milk and water added to formula is usually enough to meet bub’s hydration requirements, with breast milk containing around 87 per cent water. After this age, cooled, boiled water can be added to your baby’s diet. It’s best to serve this from a cup to help

your little one develop her drinking skills. FOR CHILDREN: • 1-3 years: around 1.0L per day (about 4 cups). • 4-8 years: around 1.2L per day (about 5 cups). WHY WATER IS SO IMPORTANT Dehydration can lead to headaches, irritability, fatigue and poor concentration. Symptoms of poor fluid intake can include constipation, dark urine or strong smelling nappies, fewer wet nappies than usual or rate or infrequent trips to the bathroom for children. Lack of fluid is especially concerning for littlies during times of illness when they may be hesitant to eat or drink, or when they have vomiting and diarrhoea due to extra fluid losses. If your

baby has diarrhoea for more than 24 hours, get them to the GP to ensure they don’t become too dehydrated. WHICH WATER IS BEST? Cooled, boiled water is the safest and easiest source of water for most babies. INCREASING YOUR CHILD’S FLUID INTAKE For older children, it’s estimated that around 20 per cent of total fluid intake comes from food. Fruits and vegetables, dairy products such as custard and yoghurt as well as foods cooked in water, such as pasta and rice, contain particularly high fluid levels. Providing a balanced diet will also help boost their water intake, with soups and smoothies a great way to provide extra fluid for littlies who are not too

keen on plain water. You can also freeze water into ice blocks with a few berries or slices of kiwifruit popped in for colour. SWEETENED DRINKS Many parents complain that their children don’t like the taste of water, preferring their fluid to come from cordials or fruit juices. Generally, this is due to these fluids conditioning their tastebuds to prefer the sweet flavour, leaving water tasting bland and dull. If this sounds familiar, start by watering down cordial and fruit juices until a minimal amount is required with the aim to remove them completely. NI

TAME A TODDLER TANTRUM

I

t seems to happen overnight – your precious bundle of newborn joy has become a kicking, screaming, biting, hitting, bundle of terror. But don’t lose hope, there are many ways you can avoid the dreaded tantrum. Here are some simple tips on managing what is completely normal toddler behaviour.

ELIMINATE 1SITUATIONS

Where you know your child will feel overwhelmed, or in places that are not child-friendly, simply avoid. It cannot always be avoided but when possible choose more suitable outings.

CLEAR BOUNDARIES 2SET

When children know what is expected of them, they begin to understand appropriate parameters and are more likely to comply.

ENSURE CONSEQUENCES 3 ARE CONSISTENT

It’s important to be aware of your child’s level of understanding and respond appropriately. You cannot have the same expectations of a two-year-old that you would of a four-year-old. They need to be realistic expectations.

4KEEP YOUR COOL Always model acceptable

and appropriate behaviours because you are by far her greatest influence. If you begin to feel frustrated and you know your child will see that in you, walk away and then re-engage again when you feel calmer.

PROACTIVE AND TIMELY 5BE

Don’t wait until things have escalated or it will be harder to calm your child. When it comes to sharing, get involved and tackle situations where children do not yet have the skill to share. ‘Your turn, my turn’ models a positive situation where everyone’s needs are met or you could always set a timer and inform your little one that when the timer goes off it is then her turn to pass the toy over. This gives your child a sense of power over the situation.

POSITIVELY ENGAGE 6 YOUR CHILD

How to end the drama with your sanity intact SHOW 8EMPATHY

Acknowledge that your child is upset with empathy and affection. Respond to their feelings and give a couple of options of what to do, instead of telling the child what not to do. It’s also important to give opportunities to express their feelings to let the child communicate and then move on.

9VALIDATE Validate your child’s feelings and then reinforce the boundary. When she responds more calmly give some praise. NI

When she’s losing it, make eye contact, grasp her hand gently or put your hand on her shoulder. Making some kind of physical contact lets her know you are there and that her safety is paramount.

ALLOW TIME TO DOWN 7COOL

Children are incapable of taking in what you are saying when they are in a heightened state of stress, anger or frustration. 69

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR MUMS ON THE GO

How to have a stress-free family holiday

T

here’s a saying about travel: getting there is half the fun. But while it’s unlikely that the speaker was throwing down the gauntlet to motivate parents wavering at the thought of taking their crew on the road, we consider it a concept worth embracing. Here’s how to make the journey more enjoyable.

Plane truths

Before you head to the airport, our tips for travelling with babies, toddlers and young kids will help you have a holiday where everyone comes back feeling relaxed.

BABIES

New parents flying with a young baby mostly worry about two

things: first, how the baby will go, and second, how other passengers will react. Good news: the latter is mostly a non-issue (people are nicer than you think) and the former is supported by a few basics. Regardless of the flight length, take a baby carrier for sleeps, long walks through the airport and settling in-flight. Remember, the baby has to come out of the carrier at customs, security and on take-off and landing, so try to time sleeps around this. For in-flight luggage, a rolling backpack is more convenient than a wheelie bag at this stage – speaking of packing, don’t forget spare clothes, and not just for the baby: you don’t want to spend a long flight in wet jeans if there’s a nappy leak.

HAPPY TRAVELS! 70

TODDLERS AND OLDER KIDS

On the road

Road trips with kids may be slow, but they don’t need to be unpleasant. The key to success is planning.

BABIES

Try to time your departure, and as much driving as possible, with bub’s regular sleeps. Pack a thermos for tea and coffee, as well as some snacks for the adults – that way if the baby stays asleep you can just keep driving.

TODDLERS AND OLDER KIDS

Leaving an hour or two before a toddler’s day sleep can work well – they get into the rhythm of travel and then they sleep. For older kids beyond day naps, have audio books ready, the iPad stocked, and consider a ‘stable table’ for craft, toy cars, and generally ensuring you don’t have to stop too often to pick things up off the floor.

This age group will also do well with car-friendly snacks, and remember, stopping for a picnic lunch at a playground is mandatory.

Where to stay

Do you need to cook? Do you have a baby who goes to sleep early or is a light sleeper? If so, staying in an apartment, Airbnb rental or even a hotel suite will be a better choice than a cheap hotel room. While regular travellers with babies and toddlers are used to lugging around plenty of gear between accommodation stops, a decent travel cot is one item worth investing in if you travel a lot. If your toddler is out of a cot but still falls out of bed, consider putting a mattress on the floor or getting a travel bed rail. Bon voyage! NI

Little ones are typically excited about getting on a plane, but when they’re on board you may need to have a few strategies up your sleeve to keep that same excitement in check. Pack quiet toys such as mini cars, drawing materials or a Magna Doodle. For older kids, audio books can offer a welcome break from the screens, if the kids oblige. Experienced travellers stock up on toddler-friendly snacks to ensure there is always something to eat if the kid’s meal doesn’t turn up (remember, you aren’t eligible for a child’s meal until you pay for their seat, usually at age two). Crackers, yoghurt and fruit are good options.

food goa ls 8 FOR YOUR FAMILY

I

f there’s anything I’ve learned about feeding a family it’s that there are always new challenges. From encouraging toddlers to eat vegies to educating tweens on why four familysized bars of chocolate are not a suitable sleepover treat, parents constantly have to refresh positive practices when it comes to food. Which is why I loved Mandy Sacher’s new book, Wholesome Child, when it landed on my desk. As a paediatric nutritionist and mother-of-two, Mandy works with families to improve their eating habits. She goes beyond the usual tips to offer genuine insights into helping your family eat better. Have regular family meals It’s not enough just to sit down together – the experience must be pleasant and engaging, says Mandy. Even if your partner is not home, Mandy suggests sitting down with your child and eating off a small plate. She suggests putting a big salad in the middle of the table with child-sized tongs. Introduce structure With high-calorie snacking a major cause of obesity, Mandy says more thought put into snacks could help solve the problem. She noticed babies eating squeezie yoghurts from a young age – a choice that encourages them to want sugar. She uses dates to sweeten muffins and cakes and gives her kids raw vegie platters. Inspire and model As well as re-offering kids vegies, Mandy believes we need to be role models. As she says: ‘When your child sees you

snacking on baby carrots or having a salad day after day, it may not be too long before a little hand reaches in there to swipe some for themselves.’ Increase exercise Increase protein and bolster their exercise. Statistics show children are becoming increasingly sedentary, so work with whatever exercise interests them. Learn to speak to your child about food The key to healthy eating is to take a ‘whole family’ approach and rather than use words such as ‘diet’, talk about how healthy foods will help them run faster. Cook with your kids Children learn through play and cooking is a fun and engaging experience. If you’re busy during the week, Mandy suggests devoting Sunday mornings to cooking with your kids. I give my kids recipe books and get them to choose what to make. Avoid repetitive eating Mandy is often astonished by how much of the same foods kids are eating. Introduce a wide variety as early as possible and if habits are ingrained, make small changes. If kids eat a bagel every morning, change it to every second morning, and if they love cheese on toast, change it to a cheese wrap or a jacket potato. Set SMART goals Set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-limited. As Mandy says: ‘Instead of making the goal “eat carrots more often”, make it “eat carrots three times before Monday”.’

Q

I am a single mum and ever since my son was born I’ve wondered if I would ever meet my significant other and be able to give my boy a sibling? Will I meet my Mr Right and have another baby of my own? Lisa, via email.

because you meet a man that you love, have a healthy lasting relationship with, and because you both want to have a baby. People who have kids to fill a quota don’t make the best parents. Enjoy your boy, if you’re ready for love, get back in the game of life and accept all social invitations and it will happen.

Lisa, I always tell people to keep their lives social. Men aren’t hard to figure out. They like a friendly smile, someone interested in what they have to say, an intellectually stimulating mate, someone with a sense of humour, a caring person. You sound like you possess those qualities. As far as a sibling, don’t feel like you need to ‘give’ your son a sibling. Have a child

I have been in a tumultuous relationship with my partner for four years, during that time we have had a lot of stress on our relationship. Lately I feel that we butt heads and are looking for different things in a life partner. Do you see us coming through this stronger or is it time to move on? Alexandra, via email.

A

Q

Alexandra, have you talked to him about how you feel? Couples fight, that’s just a fact, some years are better than others. If there’s still chemistry between you and your mate, hang in there. If the fire between you two has long disappeared, that makes it so much harder. Money and commitment are usually underlying reasons for couples to fight, that’s the normal stuff. Couples butt heads all the time, sometimes that’s what passionate people do. Remember, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side! Go to a singles bar with friends and your man might look pretty good to you by the end of the night. If not, take some time out.

Q

I separated from my husband last year after 25 years of marriage and have three beautiful daughters. I am approaching my mid-fifties, and, not having professional qualifications, I am struggling to get full-time work. I am currently employed seven days a week part-time, but

Destiny

the wages I bring in are less than my basic bills. What does my future hold? Lisa, via email.

A

Lisa, what you’re experiencing has happened for centuries. Take a page from the single mother playbook. My mum was one, so I saw it first hand. Go back to school and acquire a skill. What interests you? Are you creative? Go to nail or hair school. There are so many professions fuelled by talent and expertise that don’t require a lot of training – just passion. I’m a big believer that women should educate themselves, especially if they’re going to have children, so they have a safety net in case their marriage doesn’t work out. Forever sounds nice, but realistically, forever doesn’t happen for everyone. You can do it! Take a chance on yourself.

HAVE A QUESTION FOR ALLISON? Email destiny@newidea.com.au

SusanTaylor New Idea’s palm reader reveals what your hands say about you

Dear Bernadette, You have a strong earth element in the overall aspects of the hands but this is tempered by your slightly conical fingers. This makes for a good combination of practicality and creativity, with a tendency for you to like beautiful and creative things, as long as they have a practical application to them. The slight lean on the Saturn (middle finger) towards the Apollo indicates you are taking things all a bit too seriously and it would do you the world of good to undertake something creative, purely for the fun of it! Dancing is such a pleasure. There are key elements and marks on the hands that relate to relationships. 74

The first is that you were always destined to have two major relationships in your life but will most likely stretch that into three. The reason for this is the simian line clearly marked on your fate hand. It gives the appearance that there is a line missing (you will note three defined major lines in the one palm and only two in the other). What has taken place is that the head and heart lines have fused together creating one strong line across the entire palm. When this occurs, it brings about

a lot of confusion over which should rule, the head or the heart. This can make choosing an ideal partner difficult. You may choose the first for love, figure it didn’t bode well and choose the second by logic, only to discover that doesn’t work well either, especially when there is no ‘spark’. People with simian lines have often had one emotionally charged parent and one aloof, practical or emotionally distant one. This makes for a lot of confusion as to who do you follow? The good news is your final choice is a keeper.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE A PALM READING FROM SUSAN: Email a clear photocopy/scan of both of your palms with your full name, date of birth and the place you were born to destiny@newidea.com.au.

While feeding some late night visitors, my friend noticed that Miss Six had snuck into the room for something to eat. IDENTITY MIX-UP

For my grandson Jaydan’s third birthday I was treating him to a trip to the mainland (we were living on an island). This was his first visit to a cinema followed by lunch at McDonald’s. As we entered McDonald’s, Jaydan was looking a bit puzzled. He then walked over to the restroom doors and asked if ‘they’ were in there. Not understanding the question I asked him what he meant. ‘The sheep and cow and all the other animals,’ he said. Oops – wrong McDonald’s! Raye Bickel, Thornlands, Qld.

My boyfriend and I are both 35 and we’ve been living together for nine months. Michelle Pittman and her $100 young son Dylan’s story of survival (NI Nov 6) was one of great courage and hope, and a testament to the power of the human spirit. I wish them a full recovery from their ordeal, as they continue to be haunted by the nightmare of those dark days that almost cost them their lives. Judith Caine, Donvale, Vic.

FAMILY AFFAIR

Well done Jessica Mauboy (NI Nov 6) for commending her mother’s selfless love and support, helping her navigate the beginning of her career. Their bond is undeniable and acknowledging her parents’ input and sacrifices is a great thing. Jessica’s talent continues to rise and it seems everything she touches turns to gold. We have only seen the beginning of her remarkable talent and star power and I can’t wait to see what else she can sink her teeth into. Christina Hatzis, Yokine, WA.

Letters

Talk about mixed messages. Most of your letter bemoans the relationship. You do not seem to have anything in common and are constantly bitching at each other. Despite the toxic situation, you declare you love the man and do not want the romance (I use the word loosely) to end. You need to be open and honest. You get upset when he doesn’t pull his weight and only goes out with his friends. He says you are not as much fun as you used to be. Ask him to explain. Sort it out. It takes two to put sparkle back into a romance.

SHOULD I BE WORRIED?

Q

A friend of mine started dieting a few months ago but now I think she’s gone too far. I’ve tried to talk to her about it lightheartedly and tell her she has to eat more but she brushes it off. Should I leave it alone or try talking to her about it seriously? I don’t think she has a disorder, but I’m worried about where’s she heading. Tracey, via email.

A

You sound like a caring soul, but you are not your friend’s keeper. As long as her diet is healthy there should not be a problem with her losing weight. I don’t blame her for brushing you off if you keep telling her to eat more. You’re worried about your friend, so read up on weight loss. You may think she has gone too far, but even mentioning the word disorder is inappropriate at this stage. But there’s no harm keeping an eye on your friend. Michelle became a household name as Elvira Hancock in Scarface and then went on to win a BAFTA for her role in Dangerous Liaisons. Soon after, she received one of three career Academy Award nominations for her role in The Fabulous Baker Boys. She made the catsuit famous for her turn as Catwoman in Batman Returns. Most recently, the mother-of-two has appeared in Darren Aronofsky’s Mother!

A snapshot from the original 1974 Murder on the Orient Express film starring Ingrid Bergman and Lauren Bacall.

Murder on the Orient Express is in cinemas on Thursday.

Michelle and David got married in 1993.

Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz are a part of the stellar cast.

I

t’s been a few years since Hollywood heavyweight Michelle Pfeiffer has graced our screens, but she’s back, and 2017 has been a corker of a year for the 59-year-old. With roles in Mother!, The Wizard Of Lies and now in Kenneth Branagh’s remake of Murder On The Orient Express, Michelle – married to major TV writer and producer David E. Kelley – gets candid with New Idea about her mistakes, being a perfectionist and why Judi Dench intimidates her. What was your experience of working with Kenneth?

It was wonderful. He had a lot to keep track of on this film, with so many actors. I don’t really know how he did it, whether he has a photographic memory, but he would remember everything, and at the end of a take, he would give me a note, even though he had 10 other actors to give notes to as well. What was it like working with such an incredible cast?

It was a little intimidating, honestly. The first day of filming, I had to do a close-up and all the actors were there. I remember thinking, ‘I’m bombing in front of Judi Dench

(laughs)!’ Maybe I wasn’t actually bombing, but you know it’s hard when you’re in awe of other people’s talent. Everyone is so unbelievably accomplished. Tell us about your character in the film, Mrs Hubbard.

She is fun-loving, she loves to travel, has seen a lot of the world and has developed very big opinions. And if you give her a moment, she will tell you all about it! She’s friendly… perhaps a little too friendly at times. Why do we all love to get caught up in a great mystery story?

People like being challenged. I’m obsessed with figuring things out in everything, and I drive

(laughs). But the thing is, there’s nothing perfect about acting or about any art form, so it’s kind of strange I would choose this career. But I get bored quickly, and with acting you can keep yourself interested. Do you have a specific approach to your work and career?

I’ve made some wrong choices in my life, and what I have found is whenever I’ve done things for what I considered to be the wrong reasons, I have paid a huge price, in terms of the experience and a lot of other things. That’s why I now spend a lot of time on my decisionmaking. Many things can go wrong in a film, even when everyone has the best intentions.

‘I am definitely a perfectionist and it is hard for me to watch myself. I tend to be a little self-critical’ people crazy. I think I should fix everything. If there’s a problem on the set, I want to figure out how to fix it. I’ll actually get up and move furniture, I’ll adjust people’s wardrobe (laughs). I can’t help it. How do you find watching your own performances back?

I am definitely a perfectionist and it is hard for me to watch myself. I tend to be a little self-critical, well a lot self-critical

But if you’ve decided to do something because you really believe in it, that will support you. If you believe in your character, if you believe in the project, if you believe in the people, no matter what happens from beginning to end, you can live with that, and you can continue to support the project throughout the whole process. That has been my guiding force and it has worked well for me. NI

NEW SEASON FIRST LOOK

One thing unites all the couples – the search for a happily ever after.

After four seasons and 48 contestants, Married At First Sight is back! Channel Nine aired a trailer for the hit show – set to air in 2018 – last week, giving fans a sneak peek into what can be expected on the fifth season. While 20 contestants are lined up, we were only given a glimpse at a few of the suitors looking for love. First up was Gabrielle,

who reveals she’s desperate to find that special someone. ‘I really, really thought I would have a partner and have kids and a family. It’s hard that I’m not there yet,’ she says. Next up was Mat, who confessed: ‘I’m definitely lonely. I want to find someone to grow old with. I absolutely believe in love at first sight.’ We can’t wait to watch!

BEFORE

There was a whole lot more of Mariah to love just three weeks ago.

ariah Carey has shocked fans with her dramatic new look. The singer stepped out recently for Karl Lagerfeld’s V magazine dinner in NYC looking literally half her usual size. The legendary diva dazzled in a plunging, bedazzled black dress, paired with an ornate belt that showed off her tiny waist. Just a couple of weeks ago, the 47-year-old made an appearance on the TV show Good Morning Britain looking very different. Tell us your secret, Mariah!

Ryan has started to obsess about ‘the other Ryan’ stealing his wife.

Battle of the

RYANS! When Blake Lively jokingly wished her hubby Ryan Reynolds a happy birthday via Instagram by cropping him out of a picture with fellow actor Ryan Gosling, everyone was laughing... except Reynolds! Sources say Blake’s jealous husband has warned his ‘friend’ to stay away from his wife after fearing her rumoured crush on

We can’t blame Blake for having a crush on the Gos.

Gosling is getting out of hand. ‘Blake says Gosling’s a dreamboat and flirts with him whenever she sees him at parties and events, but Ryan [Reynolds] doesn’t like it one bit. Blake kind of uses this to her advantage. When Ryan neglects her and ignores her needs, she drops in a line about the other Ryan and how great he is.’

BEST?

Princess Mary suffered a rather unfortunate fashion faux pas when she rocked up to an event in the exact same Britt Sisseck dress as the event’s host. Talk about awkward! However, the Danish royal isn’t the only one to have been caught out...

THAT’S A BALD MOVE!

Not even Alex can pull off this dodgy ‘do.

Pair the worst haircut you can think of with one of Hollywood’s hottest leading men, and you get Alexander Skarsgard’s bizarre new look! The Big Little Lies star sent fans into meltdown when he debuted his revamped hairstyle – bald down the middle and trimmed hair on the sides – at an event in New York. The bold new look also made an appearance on the 41-yearold’s secret Instagram account, with one follower lamenting: ‘I am so sad.’ Us too! Let’s hope the dodgy ‘do is just part of a new starring role!

Princess Charlene of Monaco and actress Katherine Kelly Lang in near-identical maroon numbers. Did Jamie Lee Curtis or Sigourney Weaver look hotter in this one-shoulder dress? We can’t decide.

Shakira doesn’t look too impressed about twinning with Pink!

No doubt the claws were out between Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston at this awards show. 87

BACK ON? The stars have been spotted together for the first time since their divorce four years ago. 88

amous exes Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher were spotted leaving producer Guy Oseary’s the celebpacked wedding within a few minutes of each other. And now, sources are saying the former Hollywood flames – who divorced in 2013 – are hoping to finally get over their issues and become friends again. ‘There’s still a powerful bond between Ashton and Demi that’s never gone away, even with all that’s happened in the years since their divorce,’ says an insider. ‘Ashton still adores Demi’s daughters and remembers how they welcomed him into their family. ‘He’s always been tormented by guilt over the way things ended and he knows he let them down, but Demi assured him everything’s OK. There are no grudges, which was a relief to him.’ However, Ashton’s now got some major explaining to do back at home to his wife Mila Kunis, as the situation tests her patience. ‘It’s got to be difficult for Mila. She’s always been suspicious of Demi and her motives. But Ashton is just desperate for some peace with his ex since their divorce,’ continues the insider. ‘He believes staying friends with Demi will allow him some closure with respect to the past, and help his marriage to Mila become stronger.’

The 50-year-old actress posted an intimate black and white photo of the couple to her official Facebook page, along with a gushing caption. Last week, the Lion star opened up about her ‘raw and sensitive’ marriage to Keith, saying that he is her rock. ‘He is always told: “You’re so tough.” And he says: “That’s not what I want Nicole posted for you, this touching Nicole. JONESY SAYS...

When I was a kid, you could buy a CHiPs outfit from the show of the same name – about motorbike cops. Unfortunately, my brother was more swarthy than me. I had to be the uncool second fiddle ‘John’ to his cool ‘Ponch’. Because we didn’t have motorcycles, the neighbourhood kids didn’t see either one of us as ‘cool’ – and to demonstrate this, they pelted us with mulberries from the local mulberry tree. Maybe these days the outfit would be something from Jersey Shore – a revealing top and a neck tattoo – for girls and boys.

If Jonesy had his time again, he’d dress up as Ponch (left) from CHiPs.

AMANDA SAYS...

Meanwhile, Amanda says she would sell her family for Nina’s wardrobe!

When I think TV fashion, I have two thoughts. First up is Nina from the show Offspring. I’d pretty much sell my family for her wardrobe. Plus, if my family moved out, I’d have more cupboard space! Or... I’d market the clothes from the women on Underbelly. You know, the ones in the background of every male conversation. Stripper tassels, G-strings, gangster moll fishnets. I think that covers it. And just think of the wardrobe space you’d save with those outfits. You could also throw in the pole!
