Inner circle Want to add a little dimension to your stamped designs? Roll strips of stamped paper into rings, securing them in place with double-sided tape. For variety, fold some of the rings so they have flat joined ends then attach around an aperture.

Season’s greetings The sweet greeting stamps are perfect for adding to a faux ribbon strip. Simply cut both ends of a paper strip into a ‘v’ shape, draw faux stitches with a pencil then ink the edges.

IDEAS FOR YOUR GIFT

Riding high Set the scene for your stamped Santa! Use a small paper circle to mask off the moon and apply blue ink with a blending sponge. Use a white ink pen to colour and stamp individual snowflakes, too.

Top tip Don’t have ink pens? Use a cotton bud to ink small areas of the stamps instead!

Silver bells Heat emboss your stamped designs with metallic embossing powders! Here, the music sheet border has been stamped in clear ink, masking through the template stencil. Remove the stencil and heat emboss with silver powder.

Stuck on repeat The snowflake border stamp is a repeating pattern, which means you can use it to stamp a much larger pattern area! Use the same ink pad to blend the edges of your paper and hide any seams between your repeats.

How to make a stamped pattern repeat

1

2

3

Place your snowflake border stamp onto an acrylic block, apply ink then stamp the border strip near the edge of your paper. Frosty-blue ink works really well with the snowflake design.

Apply ink to the stamp again, taking care not to rotate it. Line up the snowflakes then stamp the border again, to the right of your first image, to create a longer snowflake strip.

Ink the stamp again, taking care not to rotate it, line up the snowflakes then stamp above the first snowflake border you stamped. Repeat the process until you’ve covered your desired area.

Ink, die cut and colour these little stamps for Christmas makes, new home cards and more

S

tamping can be tricky to get right. If you love the effects the technique can create but have been avoiding it in fear of smudge-induced frustration, it’s a good idea to start off with smaller stamps. Size does matter, and it’s easier to get a clean finish with dainty proportions. These projects incorporate some great coordinating designs and, although the stamping required is minimal, it’s still the focal point of each project.

How to...Conceal a sentiment Add a front door element that opens to reveal your greeting

1

Cut a 12.5x12.5cm red card base. Use red ink on the raised side of the brick embossing folder, add a 12x12cm piece of white card inside then run it through a die-cutting machine. Fix to the card front.

2

Snip a 1.5x12cm strip of green card to create a ‘grass’ fringing effect. Stamp, colour and die cut the ‘welcome’ mat, two flowerpots and a wreath then add all but the wreath to the card front.

3

Cut white card to 4x9cm then stamp a greeting in the centre and two flowerpots above. Attach the panel to the card, above the welcome mat. Stamp the door image onto woodgrain paper.

12

4

5

6

Die cut the doorframe and window, matching the die position on the stamped image. Use the inner-door die to cut the hinge opening – place the non-cutting part of the die on the left side.

After attaching the door over the sentiment on the front of the card, cut white card to 12x12cm and attach inside the card. Embellish with another sentiment and flowerpots, if you wish.

Cut two lengths of thread and tie a double bow. Use a mini glue dot to attach the bow on top of the wreath from step 2, then affix it onto the door on the card front, as shown.

How to…Make a double z-fold Top tip Don’t worry if some ink looks slightly smudged – it adds to the character!

3

Score and fold an A4 piece of red card in half. Burnish the folds, for crisp edges. Fold the front panel back on itself to create a z-shaped card base. Cover the panels with patterned paper, leaving a narrow border.

4

1

Trim red card to 16x24cm then score and fold to create another ‘z’ shape. Glue this panel to the one created in step 1, as shown.

2

More products! 7 Use a punch board to create an envelope. Cut patterned paper to 21x21cm then punch and score at 10.5cm and continue round until all four sides are punched. Burnish folds and glue edges.

Cut a 14x10cm piece of white card. Sponge red ink through the brick-effect mask then stick onto a slightly larger piece of green card. Attach centrally, as shown.

A few simple folds is all you need to add extra dimension and interest to your stamped card designs

Stamp and die cut the door and window. Attach vellum behind the window. Stamp two lanterns and plant pots in black ink onto white card. Colour the images and die cut. Cut white card to 15.5x5.5cm, sponge on the bricks pattern, stamp a sentiment on top then add this to the back panel on the smaller z-fold panel. To finish, add glitter.

Use the smaller stamps to create a set of little notecards. Packaged up in a coordinating box, they make a lovely Christmas gift, too!

Layer stamps, for extra dimension

Putting on the glitz The small stamps are also the ideal size for gift tags or even sparkly Christmas tree decorations!

We did it! Alison Walker Q How did you use the Stampin’ Up! stamps? A I made a card showing a red front door with a welcoming glow, and lots of Christmas greenery. I added a bit of dimension with a dark-red bow holding up the wreath. Q What did you enjoy about this project? A I loved the feeling of ‘hygge’ this project has – there’s something very special about the idea of coming home for Christmas. As I hadn’t played with my watercolour paints for ages, it was a great excuse to switch off for an hour and create something lovely.

Q What did you think of this stamping project? A I wanted to use Christmas paper as the background, so I have cut into the brickwork to set behind the door. It’s easy to cut the door to open and I’ve used some coloured cellophane to create the glass-effect window. After I cut out the flowerpots, I filled in any white spaces with dots of coloured pen, so they look cut to the edge.

Q Tell us about your fantastic card A I chose to make a ‘new home’ card, as my aunt is moving house. I decided to use a blue theme, as it is my favourite colour. I used a brayer to ink the embossing folder, and coloured in the stamped elements before cutting them out. I stamped some foliage onto the brickwork background, and added a few flowers and a sentiment.

Q Do you have any top tips to share? A Don’t be afraid to chop up your stamped images, as I have done. I’ve use some of the flowers above the door.

Q What other products did you use? A Enhance the overall look with a few finishing touches. I used glitter glue, Glossy Accents for the windows and pearl drops for the flowers.

Golden glow have been card making for about 15 years now. Since moving to France, I have had the time and space to craft more seriously! I have some friends who come along to craft with me one afternoon a week and we enjoy swapping ideas and stash and teaching each other techniques we have picked up. Christmas is very much on the agenda at the moment and I am busy trying to make the 70 or so cards I need to send to friends and family! Kim Parnell, France This looks like a great start to your Christmas crafting, Kim!

Deck the halls have always wanted to make something other than cards for Christmas. For this, I used an MDF bauble shape, attached patterned paper using PVA then gently distressed the edges with a nail file. I added tiny white pom-poms around the edge then attached the pearls. I die cut the house, tree and lamp in white card then added definition with ink before adding them. I cut these elements again in gold, to add the waste from the die cuts to the windows and lamp. Rebecca Gillard, Pontypridd This will make a great addition to a Christmas tree, Rebecca!

Your craft room Show off your crafty space! Whether it’s a big room or a tiny desk, we’d love to see where you make cards…

Taking shape I bought a single pack of quilling papers from my local craft shop. At first, I tried out my flowers in traditional pinks and blues and I was left with all the dark colours in the pack. I decided to just use them all up making flowers, leaves and curls anyway, and discovered that the darker colours look great with a little silver to brighten the card. Teresa Smith, West Midlands This is a very chic design, Teresa. We love the shapes quilling creates, too!

Burst of colour I make these starburst cards a lot, as I find them a great way to use up those oddments of paper. I also had loads of peel -offs from when I first started crafting and they are great for separating the sections. They can be adapted for any occasion. This one uses Stampin’ Up! paper and I always stamp my envelopes! Margrit Forrester, Wolverhampton Thanks for sharing your gorgeous make with us, Margrit. Starburst cards are ideal for using up leftover paper stash!

Reader Challenge Linda Denning is this month’s reader challenge winner, with her inventive card using the build-a-wreath free gift from issue 170. Linda says, “I always try to think outside the box, and the wreath base in this patterned paper suggested ‘owl’ to me. I used different parts for wings and feet. I can’t wait to see what your magazine will inspire me to make next month!” If you’d like to have a go at this month’s reader challenge, turn to page 6 for details.

Lornajane Hunter says, “My partner helped me put my room together when my daughter moved out. I was in a small box room before that, and the larger room was to give me more space but, as you can see from the photo, I quickly filled it. My daughter has moved back from college now but is willing to use the box room, which is good news as I would never fit all my stash in there!” Thanks for sharing your photo, Lornajane!

Christmas cracker I like to include cats on my cards when I can. I have six cats, five of which are rescue cats. I covered a square card with Starry Night paper from Craft Creations. The snowdrifts were cut from white lustre card using a die from My Favorite Things. I attached them with sticky foam pads to create dimension. Next, I die cut the trees and cats from black card. The cats are from the First Edition Cat Themed die set from Trimcraft. ‘Let it snow’ was die cut from silver card then I die cut the snowflakes (using the free gift from issue 169) and again used sticky foam pads to attach. Lastly, I added blue gems and diamond dust, from Crafts U Love, to add more sparkle. Jackie Collings, Sussex What a fab festive-feline card, Jackie!

Chameleon pens Colouring and blending becomes easier to control with the help of these marker pens

T

his clever range of pens has been designed to allow you to create smooth shading on your images incredibly easily and without having to use lots of different coloured markers. Each dual-tipped Chameleon pen has a chamber of coloured ink and a chamber of blender ink which allows you to achieve a range of shading tones all in one go!

B EG I N N E R

The concept is so simple and so effective and it’s great fun watching the colour transition from light to dark as you pass the pens across your paper! The addition of the Color Tops adds a whole extra dimension by allowing you to blend different colours together. BEGINNER LEVEL

Suitable for everyone

Create painterly petals for a floral card with plenty of dimensional impact

F

lowers are perfect for practising your colouring technique. Here, Kat has chosen a beautiful poinsettia image and cut out some of the petals to create a layered, 3D effect. Cutting the layers can be fiddly but adds a lovely detail – this image will still look great as a single layer if you prefer not to. For the best results, choose a smooth stamping card that is designed for use with alcohol markers. If you are using digital images, like this poinsettia, make sure your printed images are compatible with alcohol markers – this can vary with printer makes and inks. If using rubber stamps, use an ink pad brand such as Memento, which is compatible with alcohol inks. Each Color Tones pen has a brush nib and a bullet nib. For this card, Kat used the brush nib to allow smooth colouring of large areas. To create the blended effect, hold your pen vertically with the mixing chamber at the top and push the nib into the chamber so it touches the blender nib. The amount of time you push the nibs together will alter how quickly the colour transitions from light to dark when you colour. A good rule of thumb is to use shorter times for smaller areas, and for lighter-coloured pens.

See page 76 for stockists

1

Try this

Resize the poinsettia image to 9x9cm then print three complete images and one cropped image of the central petals onto white card. Die cut one full image into an 11cm-wide circle.

2 Using colour GR2, place the brush nib against the blender for 12 seconds, then start at the leaf tip and brush the ink across the leaf from side to side, working towards its base.

Hold the pen vertically when colouring, to avoid creating streaks

20 Papercraft

5

6

Colour all the petals on one of the other complete images then cut them out. For the remaining complete image, only colour some of the central petals, then cut them out.

Using RD4, place the nib against the blender for nine seconds then colour the smallest petals on the cropped image. Cut out the coloured section as one whole piece.

Where a leaf is split into two sections by a petal, start as in step 2 but, when you reach the split, keep colouring only down one side. Then start again down the other side.

Use the same technique with RD4 to colour the petals. Place the brush nib against the blender for 12 or 9 seconds depending on the petal size. Layer the image onto a kraft circle.

7

8

Use sticky foam pads to layer the petals on top of each other. You can line the petals up to match exactly or offset some of them slightly to make a fuller flower, as Kat has done here.

Make an easel base from a 29.5x11.5cm piece of white card. Add patterned papers, twine and a sentiment. Attach the coloured image, as shown, then add pearls in the centre of the flower.

Colour a little sprite

ADVANCED LEVEL

For the keen crafter

Blend different colours to create a striking effect on your stamped character images

W

e love to use non-traditional colour schemes for Christmas cards, and this magical Poinsettia Sprite image is perfect to show the effect you can achieve with the Chameleon pens. The Color Tops allow you to blend different colours together – this could be colours close to each other, to extend the range of colour, or contrasting colours that create a really dramatic look, as Kat has shown on the petals here. Kat used the brush nib for most of this image, but the bullet nib is brilliant for colouring very small areas, or adding fine detail, such as the veins on the leaves. You can also use the pens to colour the good oldfashioned way, without blending at all – Kat has used four different nude shades to create the skin tones on this image. Not only are these pens great for shading images, but they are also fabulous for coordinating die cuts to match perfectly with your design. You could try colouring other embellishments, too, such as paper flowers.

2

3

Score and burnish all the fold lines as per the template. Mountain or valley fold as indicated – it’s easier to fold the top and bottom sections first, then the central ones.

Resize the Poinsettia Sprite digital image to 8x5.5cm and print onto white smooth stamping card. Trim the paper to a 9x8cm panel, ready to mount onto your card front.

8

Use the bullet nib of GR2 to add darker shading to the leaves, and to add flicks along the leaf veins. Go over this and extend the shading with GR1, without blending.

9

Place the brush nib of NG4 against the blender for ten seconds then colour underneath the image, working upwards from 0.5cm below it. Blend again and add small dots to the ground.

MASTERCLASS

If the ink starts to get darker too quickly, you can simply reapply the nub to the blender to take it back to a lighter shade

Wh at you’ ll need... A paper trimmer will give your sprite neat cut edges

4

5

6

Colour the skin by adding NU2 in the shadow areas then extend out with NU1, then further still with NU0 and finish with NU00. Use PK2 to add blush tones to the cheeks.

Place the brush nib of V04 to the Color Top BL3 for five seconds then colour side to side across a petal, from tip to base. Repeat the process for each new petal.

Hold BL6 to the blender for three seconds then colour half of the present from top to bottom. Repeat for the other side. Hold V04 to the blender for one second then colour the ribbon.

10

Layer all the panels of the card base with slightly smaller strips of purple paper. Layer strips of turquoise paper onto white card with a scalloped edge and attach, as shown.

Die cut one medium and two small poinsettias and four leaf sprays, then colour in using the same colours as the petals and leaves in the main sprite image.

12

Attach the image onto the card and add small dots of Liquid Pearls around the sprite’s face. Add the leaves and flowers then place gems at the centre of each. To finish, add a sentiment.

Pegs can add a decorative and practical element to your cards – especially if you’re in a rush and need to make a lot of cards at Christmas. Save time that would otherwise be spent waiting for adhesive to dry, and attach elements with mini pegs instead! Simply wrap twine, evenly spaced, across your card front then fix squares of patterned papers in place with the pegs.

Sarah Jackman-Read gets inventive with mini pegs

All in a row Running out of space to display your Christmas cards? Decorate glitter pegs with Yuletide washi tape and stickers then attach evenly along a length of matching seasonal ribbon to create a sparkly festive card holder.

Holding back

3

Reveal a hidden sentiment by cutting a cross into a square piece of doublesided paper, folding back from the centre and holding in place with bright mini pegs. Simple and effective!

MINI PEG IDEAS

4

Use pegs across the top of a tent-fold card to hold your festive sentiment in place. Simply die cut circles in pretty patterned papers, add alphabet stickers and you’re all set!

5

Line up

Pride of place

Create a cute festive washing line by hanging clothes stickers across a length of baker’s twine and holding in place with pegs. Attaching the line across an aperture helps to give the design extra dimension.

Get a grip Use up strips of festive patterned papers for a quick and easy design. Add a pretty die-cut border and lengths of baker’s twine to conceal the join lines then speedily add a sentiment by using a single mini peg to attach it to the twine.

In the round

Make sweet tree decorations in no time at all! Die cut a circle frame in green card then cover mini pegs with strips of festive washi tape and attach them evenly around the circle. Finish with a sentiment, seasonal stickers and baker’s twine.

MINI PEG IDEAS

8 Close up

Use a medium-sized peg to fasten a small gift bag! A glitter peg will add a little festive sparkle and you can also attach a gift tag to it along with a cute Christmas character. Once you’ve decorated your paper bag, fill it with goodies then tuck the tag under the peg and snap shut over the top of the flap. The bag and peg will be reusable, too!

9

Star project Choose eight medium-sized pegs in various colours and take each one apart by removing the metal spring. Glue the two pieces of each peg back to back then glue them all together to form a star. To finish, add a loop of baker’s twine and decorative stickers.

10

Miniature makes

Why not use mini pegs to create a garland of diminutive cards on your Christmas projects? Cut small rectangles of patterned paper, fold in half, decorate with tiny stickers then peg in place. We’ve stopped short of going for the full Droste effect, but don’t let that stop you if you’re feeling particularly ambitious!

Top tips • For a sturdy finish, attach your mini pegs with PVA glue or a glue gun. • Use acrylic paint or patterned paper on plain wooden pegs to match any colour scheme on projects. • Use mini pegs across a scrapbook page to hold several photos in place. • For a touch of subtle sparkle, put a layer of glitter glue to your pegs before adding to your cards. • Use plain wooden pegs paired with natural jute twine for a lovely rustic look on your makes.

How to...Make a slider stepper This wintry sleigh scene works well with a slider element

Top tip Add texture to snowy scenes with a sprinkle of pearlescent white glitter!

1

Create a 15x15cm tent-fold card blank from grey card. Cut another 15x15cm piece of grey card, score it at 1cm and 8cm then fold it to create a stepper element and attach it to the card front.

2

Cut orange card to 14.5x14.5cm then layer with a 14x14cm piece of snowflake paper. Trim white card to 14x11cm, cut a curve into the top edge and add onto the layered panel. Add a tree, as shown.

3

Cut white card to 14x11cm then cut a curve into the top edge. Place a slider template – from the printables set – on top, draw around it with a pencil then cut out to make your slider channel.

34

4

5

6

Use sticky foam pads to add the section from step 3 onto the other layers. Tuck a coin under the channel and add a sticky foam pad on top. Use more pads to add trees on the left-hand side.

Glue a penguin to a sleigh, punch a hole in the end and thread with baker’s twine. Glue a coin on the back of the sleigh then affix to the coin from step 4. Glue the baker’s twine to another penguin.

Layer a 6x14cm piece of snowflake paper onto a slightly larger strip of orange card. Attach a tree to the back then add to the stepper panel on the card front. Affix the second penguin from step 5.

We did it! Sue Cass Q Tell us about your adorable penguin card A It was great to have the different sized images, and I thought they looked so much fun all in rows. I scored a 6x6in card to create two more folds. I cut wavy diagonal lines along the edges then added glitter glue. The bottom- and top-right corners are rounded to echo the runners on the sledge. Q How did your design develop? A Originally, I made this card to open out with four layers but preferred them close together – as if the penguins are skiing down the slope – so I glued the front folds shut.

Lesley Pyle

Alison Girvan

Q What did you add to the festive printables? A I used an igloo embossing folder on white card then cut it out. I cut out some of the igloo’s panels and added contrasting paper and some acetate on the back, along with the little penguin family just peeping out! By fussy cutting lots of the elements, I could make a little wintry scene.

Q How did you use the penguin printables? A I wanted to showcase these handsome chaps, so I made a tag card with three of them. I imported the images into a Craft Artist programme and printed three tags and all the layers. I made three little pockets for my tags and trimmed them with red and gold ribbon before attaching them to my card.

Q Do you have any tips to share? A My top tip for these printables is to use sticky foam pads on the back of the elements, to give dimension to the scene.

Q How did you add movement to your card? A I slotted in the tags but didn’t glue them, as I wanted the recipient to be able to move them. I added some sparkle then finished with a matching bow and a little gold bell.

Draw a faux stitched border in white gel pen around a red die-cut scalloped circle then attach the coloured image. Die cut a smaller stitched fishtail banner from patterned paper, layer onto red card and attach at the bottom edge of the scalloped circle, securing on the reverse. Add a pale-blue doily underneath then adhere onto the card base with sticky foam pads.

4

Apply glitter to a wooden snowflake, attach to a gingham ribbon bow then adhere centrally near the top edge of the card base. To finish, thread twine through a heart-shaped button, tie into a bow and place on top of the wooden snowflake.

Cut two triangles of coordinating patterned paper, so that each side measures 29cm. Attach one triangular piece of paper to each side of a slightly larger triangular piece of purple card.

1

Mark half way down each side and score from one side to the other, horizontally. This will create three triangle shapes around a central triangle. Measure 4cm from each centre line (towards the tip of each triangle) and score horizontally across, parallel to the first score line. Valley fold the first score lines then mountain fold the second. See page 77 for a template with score/fold lines.

2

Print a sentiment onto white card then cut it out with a stitched circle die. Die cut a slightly larger stitched circle and layer the sentiment on top. Attach the layered circles to the centre of the inner triangle.

3

Fold along the score lines, tucking each section over and under the others to keep them in place.

4

Finish the card by decorating with a ‘Love’ sentiment and scrolls from the Christmas Jewel collection. Add paper flowers to each scroll and place a small pearl at the centre of each one.

or some, baking is one of the true highlights of Christmas. Trying a new recipe and serving up the treats to friends and family is a real feel-good moment, especially when the compliments keep coming! There’s not always a lot of time left for crafting festive decorations but with this simply stylish set of cake toppers and an embellished cake dome, you’ll be inspired to whip up a fabulously festive look before your guests arrive! These sweet decorations are made from die-cut patterned papers and glitter card – layered and embellished for a gorgeous frosty look. It’s a creative way to

use up paper and card scraps – you could even create the effect by cutting snowflake shapes with a craft knife or scissors, too. Here, we’ve used a selection of dies to create a unique mix-and-match effect – no two snowflakes are alike, afterall – so you can also experiment with different materials and finishes for each one. These glittering decorations really are the icing on the cake and, once Christmas is over, they can be reused for children’s birthday parties themed on a particularly ‘cool’ Disney film!

Create simple cake toppers for your festive parties!

2 Pair up some of the different die-cut snowflakes and glue together. Add silver or clear gems with adhesive and push them into the perfect position with craft tweezers.

3 Take a larger snowflake and glue onto the back of the first layer, sandwiching a cocktail stick in between them. Mix different snowflake shapes to create a variety of toppers for your cakes!

This way, you have complete control over colours, size and design, such as the above embellishments by designer Charlotte Stowell. I’ve made over 100 Christmas cards already this year and I don’t want to run out of steam – I’ve got 80 to go! What ideas do you have for using découpage papers on cards? Jo Trevor, via Facebook Découpage papers are ideal if you need a quick, easy and attractive card, but do use a glue stick, rather than wet glue, for a smooth finish. For the stylish card above, Sarah covered the card front with a layer of Silver Bauble découpage paper from Craft Consortium. She then cut a piece of white card slightly smaller than the front, covered it with Blue Snowflakes découpage paper and die cut an aperture through it. Finally, she used the bauble paper again on white card, then cut out three baubles to hang in the aperture. A gorgeous satin bow and embellishment, also from Craft Consortium, finish the look.

The personal touch can really make a Christmas meal special. This Scandi-style mitten set is made with simple templates and paper-piecing techniques! All the templates you need are on our blog at bit.ly/ pi_xmas_setting. Cut the shapes from red card and Scandi papers.

The stitched effects around the cutlery wrap are actually made with thin strips of white stickers! The napkin ring is a cardboard tube cut to size, covered with patterned paper and finished with a layered poinsettia topper. To finish, make mini-mitten wine tags attached with ribbon!

We love die-cutting shapes from old book pages – they look great when inked around the edges. Another simple idea is to punch circles and glue over a card base as a background! I’ve had some failed attempts at triple embossing, the card just warps. Can you help?

Deerly beloved If you enjoy a bit of layering, this card is for you! Enhance your design by tucking a reindeer paperclip under the first paper layer in the bottom-right corner, to mirror the cute central chipboard character. For extra sparkle, cut off the tassel threads from two star tinsel tassels and wrap some of the strands across the star shapes. Tie a small glitter ribbon bow, add it to a fussy-cut tag then place it between the two stars, as shown. Finally, add your sentiments and a chipboard heart to complete the card.

Say it with a mug Just Add: Cellophane gift bag, from Cakeboxes Direct Use your double-sided papers to create a sweet little paper mug that can be filled with festive treats. The template provided on page 77 makes it super easy to score and fold the main body of the mug then stick it together at the base. Create the handle from two pieces of contrasting paper then add your sentiment on the front of the mug. To finish, place a cellophane bag inside the mug, add your goodies then tie the bag at the top with glitter ribbon. For an extra festive flourish, add a star tinsel tassel to the ribbon.

JUST ADD

Cellophane gift bag

A little bird Don’t stop at cards and gift boxes – zhoosh up your gift tags with golden touches, too! Create a sparkly nest for a bijou bird embellishment by removing the topper from a tinsel tassel then attaching onto the back of another to create a double-sided tassel for the bird to snuggle down in. Add a circular chipboard frame around the bird and nest then embellish the sentiment by clipping a star-shaped paperclip to the edge. Glitter ribbon makes a great festive tag tie and works well with rustic kraft paper gift wrap.

Going for gold For an ultra-sparkly bow with high impact, wrap a mixture of gold glitter ribbon and tassel threads together before tying. Add a contrasting heart chipboard sticker in the centre to complete the embellishment. For even more glitz, trim down a tinsel tassel to half the size to create a shooting star element for the top-right corner. Wrap glitter ribbon through a star-shaped paperclip and attach in the top-right corner to create a cute tag.

Top tip Once made, weigh down your paper mug and use it as a pen pot!

How to...Create a shaped card base The large house die can be used as a template for card bases too!

Top tip Scraps of white paper can be used to create snowy elements on roofs

1

For the card base, cut around the house die twice on kraft card, cut off the chimneystack on one of them, score a horizontal line at 1.5cm down from the top of the roof then stick it to the other house.

2

Score an 11.5x18cm piece of kraft card at 5cm and 10cm along the long edge then mountain and valley fold to create a stepper element. Adhere this to the front of the shaped card base.

3

Die cut and emboss the house from cream linen card then use the coordinating stamp with Walnut Stain Distress Ink to add the detail. Gently ink the edges with the Distress Ink, too.

4

5

6

Die cut a roof in patterned paper. Trim away the chimneystack, ink the edges of the roof then paper piece it onto the house from step 3. Affix the die-cut house onto the shaped card base.

Trim another piece of patterned paper to fit onto the front panel of your stepper element. Lightly apply Distress Ink onto the edges of the paper then adhere onto the stepper panel.

Use Distress Ink to stamp the snowman twice onto cream linen card without reinking. Colour in the scarf, hat and nose on the lighter impression. Die cut and affix to the stepper.

Curve appeal Adding bendy-foldy panels creates a cosy Christmas scene with the house in the background and the traditional-style Christmas tree in the foreground.

TRY THIS!

Reuse the dies for new home cards, too!

Everything unfolds This z-fold card is perfect for creating a Christmas street scene using the house and church dies. Just add some neutral colours and lots of glitter!

We did it! Jane Hewes Q What did you think of this folding project? A I loved using these house dies. I chose to do a pop-up card using the front of the house. I used some backing paper on the inside of the card and then die cut the house out in textured card. Q Do you have any top tips to share? A I found a hammered white card gave a brilliant effect for the snow on the roof. Also, with any dies, have a trial run first – initially, my little Cuttlebug would not cut all the way through the card and I needed a shim.

64 Papercraft

Take a look at our reader testers’ makes this month!

Monika Graefling Q Why did you choose a side stepper card? A Stepper cards are amazing for building a scene and the stamp set was perfect to create this Christmas card. My top tip with stepper cards is to choose your foreground first and check how much space you need for your focal image, then you can adjust the base for the card. Q How did you colour your card? A I created the background using Zig markers with water for a watercolour effect. I also used Zig pens to colour in the images before cutting them out and adhering to the stepper base. I used a Wink of Stella pen to add extra shine to windows and snow.

Kath Broughton Q Tell us about your pop-up card A I stamped and die cut the church then used the small brick stamps to give it patches of brickwork and plaster. To make the snow more realistic, I die cut the apex and roof again, as well as the snow at the foot of the house, to create depth. I stamped a snowman and trees, coloured them in then attached card on the reverse, so they would pop up when the card opened. Q How did you create your snowy effect? A To make it look like you have snow on your card, carefully tear some thick white card, so the paper splits – this gives you the illusion of snow on the ground. I then added white glitter to the snowy areas.

Cool & contemporary Nest all the layers in the die set to welcome Jack Frost this year. Snow is falling This snow-globe die is perfect for creating a Christmas shaker, with the layered scene behind! Fill the shaker with fake snow, white glitter or sequins – or a mix of all three! Keep the backing papers fairly plain – use cool blues and greys for a wintry feel – so the globe remains the star of the show. To finish, add ribbon, a sentiment, die-cut snowflakes and a bit of extra sparkle!

The snow globe outline makes a fabulous alternative for festive bunting! Simply die cut the globe, attach to you chosen background paper and trim around the edges. Wrap a bamboo skewer with baker’s twine and attach your bunting along the length, adding greetings or other embellishments as desired.
