for your interest in the annual Queen’s Startup Summit. Since 2013, by being an outlet for networking and learning, the Queen’s Startup Summit has been uniting the brightest minds from across Canada to spark and develop their passion for innovation and entrepreneurship. This is an unparalleled opportunity for young entrepreneurs to refine their ideas, work with students and mentors, transform those ideas into reality, and receive invaluable insight from industry professionals on the judging panel. It is a fast-paced competition lasting three days, in which teams of delegates proceed to develop their ideas into ventures by incorporating aspects of design, technology and science. We encourage a cross-functional synergy between passionate young minds, and provide them mentorship and support from industry professionals. Thus, the ventures developed at the Summit are exceptional in their caliber of sophistication, innovation and dedication.

ABOUT QSS FOUNDED IN 2013, the Queen’s

Startup Summit is a rapidly growing initiative invested in preparing our generation for the changes in tomorrow’s business landscape. Our mission is to institutionalize a culture recognizing talent and passion that inspires and enables entrepreneurship. The summit attracts budding young minds from various fields of discipline, provides the resources required to excel, and ensures a vigorously competitive environment. In partnership with the Queen’s School of Business, the Queen’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, and the Queen’s Innovation Connector, we are impassioned to attract the very best young entrepreneurs Canada has to offer. By bringing together aspiring designers, developers, and startup enthusiasts, the summit encourages collaboration in an environment that fosters creativity and synergy. As it approaches its most ambitious year yet, the summit relies on the generous support of our sponsors in order to achieve our goals. ulty of Engineering and Applied Science and Queen’s School of Business, the Queen’s Innovation Connector builds on our existing strengths in cultivating ideas and fueling discoveries that can make a difference in the world. The mission of QIC is to encourage, enable and support the innovation activities of students, professors, entrepreneurs and Canadian companies through joint courses, workshops, internship opportunities, seminar series, conferences and business plan competitions. Led by Queen’s award-winning faculty together with some of the world’s best innovators, policy makers, and legal and business strategists, QIC challenges students across all faculties to combine their knowledge and skills to bring innovative ideas, inventions and products to market and launch social initiatives for the benefit of our University, our community and our world.

MUKUND CHOPRA CEO of MD Homecall

AN ALUMNUS OF QUEEN’S COMMERCE,

Mukund’s career in entrepreneurship spans industries, investments, and cities around the globe: from working in telecommunications, mining and metals, strategy consulting and investment banking. As City CEO of Groupon, Mukund held full responsibility for multiple central US markets. He served as the Director of Revenue for Granify – a VC-backed startup with investors including Peter Thiel. As Principal of Chopra Ventures, a VC fund, Mukund focuses on accelerating growthphased businesses, pushing startups to the next level. Chopra Venture’s recent successes include facilitating the exit of its first holding, Spaces, to Slack.

JASON FIELD Founder & CEO of Brainstation

JASON BEGAN HIS CAREER working in financial

and marketing industries. While working for lululemon, he experienced the influence of e-commerce had on the physical retail space and became determined to enhance his digital skill set and overall understanding of tech. However the intimate learning environment that he looked for did not exist. Addressing this, Jason founded Brainstation, a school that empowers working professionals, entrepreneurs and aspiring freelancers with the skills needed to solve meaningful problems with technology and the confidence needed to shape their future.

Pathogen Detection Systems Inc. CEO, Queen’s Professor

DR. PETER GALLANT is a serial entrepreneur with

extensive experience in the global water technology sector and the 2002 Young Entrepreneur of the Year awarded by the City of Kingston. As the founding President and CEO of Kingston, Ontario-based Pathogen Detection Systems Inc. (PDS), he led the development of a novel automated microbial detection system. In 2009, PDS was acquired by Veolia Water Solutions and Technologies, a division of the world’s largest environmental services company – and became ENDETEC – the global water quality sensor platform for Veolia Water.

capital firm with offices in Ottawa, Ontario and Palo Alto, California. Code has more than 25 years experience as a company founder, operating executive and investor. As a Venture Capital and private investor, Code has invested in more than 50 technology companies across North America.

SHAHRAM YOUSEFI

CEO of Canarmony Corp. and Queen’s Electrical Engineering SHAHRAM YOUSEFI IS PASSIONATE for technology,

innovation, teaching, learning, sustainability, harmony, and helping others. These passions are particularly fulfilled by teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in engineering, advising and supervising students, developing new ideas and technologies, developing curriculum, and organizing related workshops and conferences. He is also the CEO of Canarmony Corp., a small Kingston-based Canadian Company with a focus on developing and enhancing harmony at home and in the office for all one step at a time. The company creates applications that simplify work and enhance quality of life everywhere.

ALBERT BEHR Founder of Behr & Associates Inc.

A PROUD CANADIAN, ALBERT BEHR, in his 30

years of professional experience, has led both the financing and operational execution of some of North America’s and Asia’s most famous technology companies. Albert’s current work involves funding and driving some of the most promising IT, Cleantech, Life Sciences, and Material Science firms in North America through his widely recognized Business Acceleration firm, Behr & Associates Inc. Additionally, as Co-Founder of Cleantech North, Albert helps drive national agenda items for the Canadian Cleantech market. Albert also writes a regular feature article for Profit Magazine, as well as being a Professor and Guest Lecturer for several MBA and Engineering Schools in Canada.

NILES LAWERENCE CEO of Vuru

NILES LAWRENCE IS THE CEO & PRESIDENT OF VURU.CO, a VC backed startup based in Silicon Valley. He attended Queen’s University where he majored in Biochemistry and has studied Value Investing at Stanford University. As a result he takes a scientific and analytical approach to dealing with complex societal issues. He applies his years of experience in project management, business development, and UI/UX design towards making investing simple for the millennial generation. Niles gives back to the startup ecosystem by advising and mentoring early stage startup founders for Startup Weekend, Draper University and on ABC’s Startup U.

STEVE KAMINSKI President of Colonnade Management

STEVE IS A PARTNER at colonnade investments and

holds several executive positions within CI’s portfolio of companies, including Executive Chairman for real estate developer Colonnade Development. He also is President at real estate property manager Colonnade Management and CDI Realty Inc., Vice President at farmland investore Bonnefield Financial, Executive Chairman at contracting company SiteCast Construction, and the Co-Founder and CEO of retailer terra20.

ALEX SHEE Analyst at Real Ventures

ALEX IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING ENTREPRENEURS build their businesses and helping drive the start-up

ecosystem in Canada. In a former life he worked as a Corporate lawyer at Norton Rose Fulbright Canada focused on Start-Ups and M&A. In fact, he is a qualified lawyer in Quebec and holds two law degrees in both Common and Civil law from McGill University. Moreover, he also completed certificates in business and law at Stanford University, the University of Oxford, China University of Political Science and Law and National University of Singapore. He was awarded the Scarlet Key Award and has been involved in leadership roles in numerous organisations. On his downtime, he loves to backpack and sail.
