T

HIS week Presteigne is shellshocked by the loss of two of its best. Both of them died too young and both contributed to making the town such a very friendly place and from opposite ends of the High Street made shopping a real pleasure.

ANNEMARIE ROBERTS Annemarie was a class act. Generous, warm hearted, extremely hard working and devoted to her family. For many years she worked in childcare and then had 2 children of her own. She also assisted Elda at The Coffee House and then in 2011 she teamed up with Leon to bring us The Salty Dog greengrocers and fish shop. She worked tirelessly to make Salty Dog a brilliant place to shop. Her long running comedy double act with Mandy made even buying a cabbage a lot of fun. This happy period of her life lasted right up to the end. She was a great champion of other local businesses and institutions and was especially active in supporting the local playgroup. She died on the 20th January and will be missed by the whole town and especially by her Mum and extended family, Leon and her kids Euan, Amy and grandchild Alfi.

ANDY LEAVIS A n d y, a r e g u l a r c a s t member on these pages, was the most extraordinary polymath. What was he interested in? Art, We take no responsibility Antiques, Old Buildings, Churches, for the veracity of the Old Cars especially Austin A 35s, information herein Coaches and Buses, Magazines, Presteigne’s History, Music, BROAD SHEEP, Records, CDs, Food, Dogs, BirdThe Fred Bulmer Centre, watching, and taking pictures of Wall Street, Hereford, HR4 9HP all of the above. But most of all Tel: 07786 131159 he liked people and particularly Email: info@broadsheep.com anybody who ventured onto the Website: www.broadsheep.com pavement outside his shop. Who were they? Where had they come from? Where were they going? Did they need any info about Presteigne? Were they interested in buying any antiques? Within 5 minutes of moving here he accumulated more knowledge about the town and its history than people who had lived here for 50. He was, indeed, a one man Tourist Information Centre. Originally an Essex boy (and proud of it) he moved to Ludlow in the early 2000s and set up The Little Red Car Shop (named after his favourite Austin A35) on Corve St, in order to sell some of his collection of toy cars, trains and vinyl he had collected during his time delivering Double Decker Bus Parts (he even got to drive a Routemaster on works outings!). There he met Jules who ran the antique shop opposite. When she moved to Presteigne, Andy followed and after a short spell as the, rather overgenerous, barman in the Wine Bar he joined Jules at Courtyard Antiques. He also became part of the team that ran the Full Circle events and Andy (André Voiture Rouge) was resident DJ at the Velvet Violin. The high point of these gigs was the pop up pub in 2014 when Andy and Jules turned their whole house into a full-on pub, with music, for 4 days during Presteigne festival.

Andy in fancy dress at 2011 Tour de Presteigne

I loved our electric bike pub jaunts and like Jules and countless others I can’t imagine life without him. In Mid-December he was on stage in the Presteigne Panto. It is hard to believe how suddenly he left us.

hugh’s bit Scarecrow greets the first day of Spring March 1st Looking out from my bedroom window I imagine that the weather on the morning of my birth, the first morning, was like today’s, spring showers, clean light, new leaves, everything going manic as the grass leaps up and the trees unfurl and the birds in the veg patch get on with their fierce dinosaur-descended life-styles. The unleashing of spring is like a giant thump – a single surge of sap, one pulse of the earth’s heart. The thrush tugging at the worm, the wren sending out its midget’s battle-cry, fierce as my granny, the cat by the edge of the path waiting to pounce on the mice in the compost and the scarecrow standing above it all on guard in the middle of our veg patch. May 8th Today the scarecrow is reeling, buffeted by the gale, rocking to and fro. He wears red swimming shorts, and a turquoise t-shirt; a farmer’s flat cap tops off the mop that is his head. He hops around on the mop-handle which is both his backbone and his leg, a twisted coat-hanger makes his humpty shoulders; he hasn’t been baptised, hasn’t got a name. Head down into the wind he looks like he’s fending off blows. The cat is playing, not nicely, with a vole, one of this year’s glut of tiny mammals. Not quite awake, past the compost heap, out of the corner of my eye, I mistake a crumpled fertiliser sack for a sleeping sheep-dog….. June 20th This morning the scarecrow is face down in the mud, flattened by the gale, hung-over from the drink; his T-shirt is ripped and there’s a hole below his heart, leaking sawdust. I am busy planting; one for the sparrow, one for the crow, and in between the showers, one to rot and one to grow. Then I think I see the scarecrow chasing the cat who has caught another mouse ... he’s pogoing in pursuit, one-legged across the veg patch, lurching and leaping ... Brilliant thunderstorm in the night - right overhead, whip-cracks! Torrents of water. Later, in the woods the drops are still falling, collecting and cascading down the layers of leaves, from the canopy down onto the prickles of the holly and down into the understorey and the leaf litter, heavy drops that still fall from a clear sky long after the rain has stopped. Bracken fronds flicker registering each drop. The water streams off the scarecrow who is limp and hypothermic, a crucified silhouette. July 30th Drunk again the scarecrow’s reeling round the garden with his arms out, making eeaaow noises, pretending to be a plane. He smells of meths. Later the scapegoat is on his arse in the grass again, mown down by a gust.

September 31st I’ve just woken up. I’m surveying the flotsam of our disorderly bedroom. Her nickers on the floor, my trousers on a chair. Small change strewn across the rug. Were we pissed last night? The arm of a shirt dangles out of a

wardrobe, like it’s hanging off of someone who is asleep in there, or even dead maybe, conked out in our chest of drawers, the scarecrow’s arm. My wife mutters about word-worms and moths, and slumbers on. Word-worms? Eating holes in polysyllables… The shirt is faded blue with white buttons and the cuffs are undone. Is it the scarecrow? Perhaps he doesn’t like sleeping on his own. When he awakes he will be full of tiny bullet-holes, and the word-moths will be eating his underwear, and mice nesting in his arm it. Awake! Awake! the storm is coming! Sound the trumpets! The day of the Dead! My shirt flips itself out of the drawer, flails at the curtains then swoops down the stairs, and tries the door but can’t get out. I turn the handle; behind me my wife’s eyes are spinning round like catherine wheels, and her mouth is full of sparks. He catches the wind and soars off in the gale, making for the big hill. More of my clothes are trying to get out the door, and wrapping themselves round my head and my legs as they pass but I can’t let my entire wardrobe go, or else I will be naked. Socks swim by my feet in shoals. One of them chaos moths flitters by. Just then my wife inserts the alarm clock in my ear and it ticks louder and louder and then explodes…. Wah! Wah! Woe is me! Armageddon! Once again I am thrashing about trying to stay afloat and shaking my head to get dream water out of my eyes, the free-for-all autocue out of my ears, the stale fumes of alcohol out of my brain spluttering “Who, where? Again?” Back in the sad world again, gripped by gravity, knocking on the floorboards with bruised knuckles, it’s a Tuesday. Why me? Why now? I groan. Why anyone? Two days out from the Sunday and no land in sight, peering over the bow towards the weekend. Tuesday the doldrum day. Back on deck, my watch, trying to get the daisy-chains to link up. Go talk to my colleague and friend, the scarecrow who I find crumpled up against an apple tree in the orchard like he was so often last year. He is indeed wearing my blue shirt and has chosen her old plaid skirt. I introduce him: Gutter – stars; Stars – guttersnipe, still drunk at dawn. November 4th It is the end of autumn: I remember him wheeling about the garden in the summer with his arms out, making like a plane, loosening up, happy again, but then his old habits got the better of him, you could smell the meths in the loo each time he puked up. Come tomorrow we will toss a match at him and say goodbye as he flares away at the top of the pile, melting in a flower of ephemeral blue, like a nebula, sentimentally a good feeling, “a lovely Guy, he would have wanted it this way”, no more flailing at the wind or vainly trying to frighten the podgy wood pigeons that waddle about regardless in the brassicas. Bye bye unscareycrow. Let your soul flap flap away. Bye bye. © Hugh Colvin 2013-24

cinema Bordering on the Fabulous T

HE annual Borderlines Film Festival seems to come around sooner every year and once again there’s the usual menu of important, moving, stunning and quirky fare shown across an agreeably wide range of venues. This time my recommendations are loosely based on films screening at multiple locations but visit the website for details of everything else that’s on offer – www.borderlinesfilmfestival.org ZONE OF INTEREST (12A)

morally compromised modern media, this flat-out hilarious big screen debut from writer/director Cord Jefferson stars Jeffrey Wright (HUNGER GAMES, NO TIME TO DIE, SYRIANA) as Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison, a novelist frustrated by a lack of success that seems to hinge on the fact that he’s a black intellectual. Deciding to turn the table he pens a potboiler built around racist tropes born in the ghetto that with obvious irony become a huge hit. As a TV series veteran (SUCCESSION, WATCHMEN), Jefferson knows how to keep the pace fast and the twists turning, and after a long and noble career playing second fiddle to household names, Jeffrey Wright delivers a turn that justly elevates him to star status and a richly deserved Oscar nomination. MONSTER (12A)

10 years after his last offering, UNDER THE SKIN, writer/ director Jonathan Glazer’s no less disturbing and powerful story chronicles Rudolf Höss and his family enjoying a charmed, even idyllic life just over the wall from the genocide taking place in the Auschwitz concentration camp where he is the commander. Adapted from Martin Amis’ novel, the narrative contrasts the hideousness of what’s transpiring just metres away with the day-to-day normality which Hedwig Höss – Sandra Hüller, such a revelation in the recent ANATOMY OF A FALL – and her five children tacitly accept as part of Hitler’s final solution, a message which has an increasing relevance today as tyrannical dictatorships emerge and consolidate across the world. Enhanced by the use of natural light within and outside the family home, the performances are convincingly naturalistic with Christian Friedel, who ironically played the man who attempted to assassinate Hitler in 13 MINUTES, especially good as the quietly conflicted although clearly brutal Rudolf. AMERICAN FICTION (15)

A biting satire on how the wokerati demean the very minority groups they claim to support, a dysfunctional family descending into a tailspin and a harsh criticism of

Following the international success of 2018’s SHOPLIFTERS, fêted Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda again hired that film’s star, Sakura Ando as Saori, the widow mother of Minako, an 11 year-old boy increasingly troubled not, as she first thinks, by his father’s death, but what appears to be a bullying schoolteacher. Not to be confused with 2003’s murderous Aileen Wuornos biopic, this MONSTER is equally if more subtly unsettling as Saori confronts the school principal who appears to be protecting a sinister cohort bordering on a cult. However two impressive gearchanges reveals some gently comedic commentary on the perils of social media and/or the frailty of youthful alliances, but masterfully understated performances and a score by the celebrated ex-popster Ryuichi Sakamoto who died shortly after filming add up to a truly compelling denouement. Other titles definitely worth catching include Juliette Binoche in the gastronomic rom-com, THE TASTE OF THINGS, Olivia Colman and Timothy Spall in the gloriously profane WICKED LITTLE LETTERS, Andrew Haigh’s compelling meditation on love and loss, ALL OF US STRANGERS, an against character Michelle Williams as a marvelously tetchy artist in SHOWING UP and SCALA!!!, and a profile the King’s Cross fleapit favoured by metropolitan movie mavericks – me included! food The Corners Inn, Kingsland

M

ISTER Pernickety must start this review with a sincere and heartfelt grovel. His last review of the Old Hall Persian restaurant at Dorrington was presented under a headline: ‘The Old Hall Perian’ – a cringe-making typographical gaffe. He apologises fulsomely both to you, his loyal readers, who have come to expect better of him, and the proprietors of the Old Hall Persian restaurant, where he had so much enjoyed his visit. The fact is that despite the unfailing quality of his grammar, syntax, metaphor, vocabulary and orthography, Mr P on the typing keyboard is scarcely more skilled than an Orang-Utan with dementia and a pair of boxing gloves (by which he implies no slur on that fine primate). Before turning to The Corners Inn, Mr P must express his dismay at Shropshire Council allowing a large branch of Marks and Spencer Food to open on the A49/ Sheet Road roundabout in Ludlow. Mr P understands that the council is anxious to scrape in any rates it can, however much damage it will do to Ludlow’s economy, after the decision by pathetically inept, irresponsible councillors in 2017 to buy three failing shopping malls in Shrewsbury for £52m from a commercial property company desperate to get rid of them. As predicted by many, within two years of completing the purchase – before Covid lockdowns had even started – these assets had diminished in value by a massive £33.5m. By March 2021 they were worth a mere £12.35 m. And this month demolition has just started on one of the three malls. The problem with Marks & Sparks is that they have become surprisingly good at food, which is also one of the mainstays of small Ludlow retailers. These lovely independent butchers, greengrocers, bakers and delis – already struggling against supermarket competition, will find it harder to compete with the variety, pricing and quality of M&S. Mr P would far rather shop in Ludlow’s small shops than be offered a choice of 50 coffees or spices. Just down the road, the Ludlow Farm Shop, a noble initiative and large local employer, will also face stiff competition. But Shropshire planning committee barely canvassed the views of local traders nor probably gave a damn anyway. This is all an inevitable result of local government run by chancers with big egos, little commercial prowess and no sympathy for small towns.

It was Mr Pernickety’s old friend and one time collaborator, the Wrinkle Rocker’s suggestion that he try Pie & a Pint night at the Corners Inn at Kingsland. Mr P hadn’t entered this pub for at least a decade and didn’t have especially warm memories of it, but with a change of stewardship, things can change mightily in a village pub. The current owners, whom their clearly designed website identifies as Terence and Emma, took the place on 9 years ago and have achieved a comprehensive

re-ordering of the place. Exposed oak beams, as those who are familiar with estate agent’s blurbs will know, come by the ‘wealth’; in the case of the Corners Inn, easily enough to open an account at Messrs Coutts, Bankers. The furniture is unpretentious, comfortable and solid. And lighting is pleasingly minimal. Terence is the chef in the pub, and Emma does front of house – the ideal combination – and it shows. A wide and well-thought-out menu is offered and charmingly served. In these difficult times for Licensed Victuallers, it’s necessary to keep refreshing everything you do as an inn-keeper. On Mondays, for instance, aware of the current state of most people’s disposable income as a result of Brexit and the brave fiscal initiatives of Ms ‘Surgical’ Truss, the Corners offers a good value £12.50 Pie & a Pint. Mr P who, despite appearances, loves a bargain, was delighted to give it a try. The pies he was told are not produced in-house but by specialist country butchers, Mark Hurds of Weobley. There is a choice of properly made pies (with sides and bottoms – the Wrinkle Rocker pointed out – not just a flaky pastry hat plonked on top of a dish of stew), with a drink (ale, wine, Pepsi, lager or cider) for just £12.50 all in. The WR and Mr P sat down happily to sample them, intermittently discussing the state of the Universe between mouthfuls. Mr P had ordered a Steak and Kidney. It arrived with a good tump of fluffy mash, a bowl of lightly cooked al dente veg and excellent gravy. The pie was full of meat and no padding, with succulent chunks of kidney, complemented by a small jug of the flavoursome gravy. The WR uncooperatively had the same, so Mr P can’t report his take on other fillings: chicken with ham and leek or mushrooms, steak and Ale, or vegan Mediterranean vegetable tart. With his pie, Mr P guzzled a pint of Wye Valley’s delicious HPA, and considered, not for the first time, how fortunate the Marches population is to live within a golden triangle of fine ale makers. Mr Pernickety

grass roots Climate change denialism - and its victims

A

RATHER obscure court case in America is awakening memories of a huge environmental controversy of 15 years ago. At the centre of the dispute was a row between mainstream climate scientists and some sceptics who are often labelled global warming denialists. So why is that debate being revived now? In the aftermath of the initial flare-up, one of the academics, Professor Michael Mann, who later took up a post at Pennsylvania State University, believed that he had been libelled by two critics. The critics used some strong language and florid metaphors in their denunciation of Professor Mann. Around that time there had been, quite by chance, some coverage of an alleged sex abuser at Penn State. In 2012 a football coach at the university, Jerry Sandusky, was convicted on dozens of counts of child sex abuse, committed in the previous decade and a half. This sex abuse at Penn State proved to be a tempting source of imagery for two of Michael Mann’s critics, as they sought to sharpen their attacks on the climate scientist. One of these was Mark Steyn, a conservative writer and TV presenter. He wrote that Michael Mann had “molested and tortured data…” and that the university authorities had indulged in a “whitewash” of Mann’s climate science. Meanwhile these authorities had allegedly failed, until late in the day, to expose or curtail the sex crimes committed by the sports coach Jerry Sandusky. The climate scientist, Michael Mann, claims that this had a big negative effect on his attempts to raise funds for climate research. He has testified that funding for his climate research plummeted in the wake of the allegations by Mark Steyn and another right-wing critic, Rand Simberg. Mann claims that, in the four years leading up to the current defamation action by Steyn and Simberg, he was able to raise 3.3 million dollars to help fund his research. But, in the four following years, he was only able to raise half a million dollars. In 2012 Mann had asked Steyn and Simberg to retract what he saw as their inflammatory claims and to apologise. When they refused to withdraw, Steyn challenged Michael Mann to sue him. It was at that point that Mann went down the road leading to the current defamation action. In court last month, Michael Mann told a Washington DC jury that Steyn and the other accuser had crossed a critical line. “They compared me,” said Mann, “…to a convicted child molester and made false allegations of scientific misconduct against me. For me to be compared to Jerry Sandusky was maybe the worst thing I had ever experienced.”

But the words of Mark Steyn have also ignited controversy outside the USA. Last year he came under fire

Professor Michael Mann, University of Pennsylvania

from the UK media regulator, OFCOM, over statements he had made about vaccines. It was alleged he materially misled the audience of GB News. Several viewers had complained that Steyn had made dangerous claims and reached “fatally flawed conclusions.” It’s reported that Steyn resigned from his presenting role at GB News after the channel apparently demanded that he should personally pay any fines that might be issued if he were to be found in breach of the broadcasting code. The verbal attacks on Michael Mann in which Steyn took part surely reawaken memories of the climate change furore that struck the UK around that time. In Britain, a prominent part in the row was played by Lord Lawson, once a cabinet minister, back in the Thatcher era. Lord Lawson and some fellow climate sceptics, often described by climate scientists as denialists, had launched an onslaught of criticism at the climatic research unit at the University of East Anglia. The attacks brought so much publicity and tabloid vituperation that one of the scientists targeted, Professor Phil Jones, later revealed that he had contemplated suicide. However, Professor Jones and others in the climate team at East Anglia were eventually absolved of blame by a series of independent inquiries. From what I can see on internet searches, many of Jones’s tormentors at the Global Warming Policy Foundation, or GWPF, continue to vent their disbelief in climate science. The man currently leading the GWPF, Benny Peiser, does not dispute man-made climate change. He insists rather that the argument is about what policies should be followed in response to it. But what is notable on the GWPF website is the absence of any attempt to address or explain several years of extreme weather, heatwaves, droughts, floods and so on, which were firmly predicted by mainstream climate science. If Lord Lawson and his fellow sceptics have a theory about what is causing those violent weather extremes, they are keeping it very quiet. Julian O’Halloran

SHADOW WORK, COUNSELLING & EXPERIENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC PROCESS Facilitated shadow work is a type of embodied psychotherapy rooted in depth psychology. I work in longer sessions, typically 5-hours. These deep-dive one-to- one sessions allow a shame free space to develop within which to identify, explore and transform those habitual, ingrained or unconscious patterns, beliefs or behaviours that trap us and hold us back from living full and joyful lives. This work holds the potential for deep personal growth, and deep healing and is the place to dive real deep into difficulty and challenge, shame or guilt, your grief, your fear or rage. The holding I offer you is both sensitive and strong, and you are invited to bring anything you wish to our work together.
