I Woke Up This Morning
W
ELL, with reference to last month’s editorial – I see Branson won the space race although technically he only went up and down, very high and fast and would have to have gone a further 9miles to the Karman Line to actually be in space. Anyhow my advice is stick with Bezos for your first space flight and he goes up on July 20th. Meanwhile I have been trying to raise money for the Broad Sheep spaceship which will be manned by super intelligent Octopuses and Ravens and they will hopefully plant a satellite in orbit so that you can instantly tune in to Broad Sheep TV and find out about gigs in the Borders wherever you are in the world. Talking of TV I would like to make a confession, I have been occasionally tuning into the dreaded GB NEWS. They ramble on interminably about how ‘woke culture’ is destroying the country, which is about as entertaining as watching paint dry but on the other hand the terrible production values, plus the obnoxious Dan Wootton, make it marginally more funny than say - Mock the Week. Last night I tuned in to find, nasty Spectator Journalist, Rod Liddle rambling on about Gareth Southgate with so much echo on his voice it sounded like he was recorded at Sun studios in 1955 and puffing away on a fag like it actually was 1955. When was the last time you saw anyone discussing anything on a political opinion programme with a Capstan Full Strength clamped between their lips? Shocking!!
However it seems that I too have been caught on the wrong side of the woke line. Can you believe All events listed may be it? Politically correct Pete subject to change hoisted by his own electric with regard to Covid bike battery charger lead. regulations. I was going through a pile Clare Edwards of old Broad Sheeps in the The Lodge, Westhide, garage when I came across Hereford, HR1 3RQ this cartoon, which I made Tel: 01432 850444 in 2009. I had no memory Email: info@broadsheep.com Website: www.broadsheep.com of having drawn it but it filled up all of page 3 and was obviously a ploy to avoid writing an editorial. ‘Her outdoors’ immediately claimed you couldn’t print that without offending people who looked like kids drawings. I leave you to decide for yourselves but it put me in mind of my favourite songwriter Randy Newman and the trouble he had with his hit song Short People. Some of Randy Newman’s songs he probably would not have thought appropriate for 2021, like for instance Rednecks, which became a non-ironical hymn for Klan Members. But Short People is so stupid that Randy was gob smacked that anybody took it seriously. Meanwhile the politically aware fan base claimed it was about prejudice and at the same time gangs of short people held parties where they threw rotten eggs and darts at pictures of poor old Randy. If you would like to watch Randy singing and explaining all this – check out Jon Ronson’s excellent documentary ‘I Am Unfortunately Randy Newman’ on YouTube. Counter-Culture ‘What time do you close?’ I asked the grump behind the counter. ‘As soon as you’ve gone,’ was his friendly reply.

ILLIAM Blake, in his Auguries of Innocence, writes about seeing the world in a grain of sand. Well, for my money, you can see quite enough of the world, thank you very much, in one’s encounters with assorted shop assistants and salespersons. Between them they display pretty much the whole gamut of human emotions and attitudes, from bubbling jollity and spontaneous kindness to Stygian gloom and barely concealed hostility. At the risk of being banned from umpteen establishments, here are a few choice examples, from shops far and wide. While the names may be works of fiction, the descriptions are definitely not. We’ll start with Joy. Nothing is too much trouble for Joy. Nothing. Unfailingly welcoming, she enquires about your health, engages in small talk while at the same time remaining sharply focussed on your requirements. And the icing on the cake? - her lively sense of humour. Also, as a final flourish, you never leave the shop without being thanked for your custom. And it’s genuine. What more could you ask? The entire experience was a delight, for both parties. Joyful, no less. Morag, on the other hand, probably SAS-trained, takes no prisoners. Not once has she been known to smile in all her years behind the counter, and if absolutely obliged to speak to a customer is monosyllabic. Eye-contact, it goes without saying, is a concept unknown in Morag’s world. Although super-efficient with inanimate objects, with anything living and breathing - as some of her customers are - she is several degrees frostier than the shop’s deepfreeze. Then there’s Hamish, a fascinating exhibit, the archetypal Jekyll-and-Hyde character. With his colleagues, a hail-fellow well-met sort of chap. You

know the type: jolly, mischievous, witty, quite the life-and-soul-of-the-party. But let a customer heave into view and his dark angels take over, transforming him, in an instant, into his alter ego - into someone unapproachable, distant, simmering with resentment, possibly even dangerous. To quote Johnny Morris, he has ‘the scrutes turned full on’, clearly regarding any customer as Public Enemy Number One. Occasionally, but alas, all too rarely, one meets the salesperson who can only be described as surreal. So surreal it makes you wonder if the encounter ever took place at all. But it did. Oh yes. I had gone to Iwan’s premises to buy a shed. As soon as he saw me he grinned like the proverbial Cheshire cat, rolled up his trouser leg and began to jump up and down with excitement. ‘Look, look! The knee’s as good as new!’ Just in case this wasn’t quite surreal enough, he shook me by the hand and thanked me profusely. ‘Why are you thanking ME?’ was my reasonable question. ‘Why? Because you’re my doctor!’ I told him that while I was thrilled that his knee was better I was not in fact his doctor. Most surreal of all, however, was his absolute refusal to believe this, so he continued to address me throughout as ‘doc’. [While I wouldn’t have missed this encounter for all the world, I thought it wise to buy a shed from somewhere else.] Years ago, in a top-quality, old-fashioned establishment, I foolishly attempted to buy a jumper for my wife. The word ‘attempted’ is significant, as you will see. So is the word ‘foolish’. The shop was something of an institution, as were some of its staff, especially the manageress of the Ladies’ Department, a woman in her fifties, with a terrifying military bearing and a stentorian voice to match. You tangled with her at your peril. She clearly disapproved of men being allowed to enter this inner sanctum. She probably disapproved of men - full stop. ‘Your wife: what size?’ I hadn’t a clue. In fact I didn’t really understand the question. There were three other customers in the shop, all matronly women, all of a certain age. The Brigadier made them line up in front of me, like soldiers on parade. ‘Bigger than, or smaller than?’ I was out of that shop like greased lightning, without a jumper. Yes, shopping is a tricky business. It depends whether you run into Joy, Morag, Hamish, Iwan, or the Brigadier. But... as I see it, embedded in the beating heart of these often mundane transactions - serving and being served - is a timely reminder, a metaphor if you will, of a much bigger truth. A reminder of something we already know, of course, but risk overlooking: namely, that full humanity is attainable, both for the individual and for the human race as a whole, only when kindness is kept top of the agenda. cinema Film Reviews by Mark Williams
ANOTHER ROUND (12A – SUBTITLES) Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Danish writer/director Thomas Vinterberg’s film about the delights and perils of dipsomania comes at the end of a lockdown that many of us alleviated by hitting the bottle a bit harder than usual but either way it’s an entertaining piece of work. Co-starring Mads Mikkelson and Thomas Bo Larsen both of whom were in Vinteberg’s brilliant if disturbing THE HUNT, playing two of four schoolteacher colleagues who discovering an obscure medical theory that our bodies normally operate with too little alcohol in our bloodstreams, decide to drink steadily all day and so keep things brimmed to perfection. Except of course it escalates from exaggerated bonhomie to embarrassing blunders and eventually into marriage failure and career suicide. But that said it’s a cleverly plotted, often highly amusing cautionary tale with excellent performances especially from Mikkelson who proves ever more versatile in the upcoming revenge thriller, RIDERS FOR JUSTICE. THE TRUFFLE HUNTERS (12A – SUBTITLES) Michael Dweck and Gergory Kershaw are youthful documentarians whose much fêted THE LAST RACE I especially loved as it featured a threatened American grass-roots stock car racetrack where I once spent many thrilling evenings and here the writer-directors turn their attentions an equally obscure phenomenon, the search for the rare, white Alba truffles highly-prized by gourmands the world over. Only a few, increasingly aged men and their sniffer dogs know how to locate these strange, pungent funghi and they work at night so’s to leave few clues for the invariably “greedy young men” who try to usurp their trade. The makers follow this battle between tradition and commercial pressures much as they did with THE LAST RACE and working as their own cinematographers imbue it with a visual richness which compounds the quiet drama but with a reflective undertone that perfectly suits the Northern Italian rural setting and a way of life that’s changed little in the last century. A gem. DEERSKIN (15 – SUBTITLES) What is it about those shy, elusive animals, because spookily, this has much in common with Yorgos Lanthimos’ KILLING OF A SACRED DEER, namely the darkest of humour, a bizzare plot and a very particular texture. In this case we have Oscar-winning Jean Dujardin (THE ARTIST) whose George for no apparent reason is obsessed with the hide of that animal and spends his last €7000 on a fringed deerskin jacket whose vendor throws in a home movie camera for good measure. The troubled, recently separated George then begins a crusade to rid the world of lesser jackets and film it in the process, enlisting the help of a bored if bemused bartender (Adèle Haenel, LE COMBATTANTS) who indulges him with gifts of further deerskin attire until his obsession take a decidedly twisted turn but ends up in her rather than his favour. French writer-director (and successful dee-jay) Quentin Dupieux has a track record with offbeat, single title films like RUBBER and REALITY and does his own editing and cinematography which he deploys here to hugely enjoyable effect.

R Pernickety is no common-or-garden hack, but he is not without a few journalistic failings. He cannot, for example, contemplate sitting in front of his keyboard to start a piece until he can feel the whistle of the nine-tailed cat of deadline pass very close above his scapulae. He has also been known, occasionally, to have suffered from unpreparedness, and for this review, finding somewhere to eat at short notice under the residual Covid constraints posed a frustrating challenge, particularly as he feels that he owes it to his readers to spread his net more widely across the margins of Offa’s Dyke. Every place that he thought might interest his followers seemed to be closed or fully booked for Wednesday lunch. Becoming desperate and with his taste for nostalgia, he regressed to a former time of his life, to consider revisiting long ago scenes of beer swillage and pub debate. It would have been enjoyable, he thought, to stand once more at the bar of the Cross Keys in Withington, while guzzling HPA, consuming half a pack of Benson & Hedges and pontificating on local issues to anyone who would listen. This was, though, not an option as standing at bars is currently illegal, and the pub is currently open just a few evenings a week. Besides, the only victuals the Cross Keys ever served were (delicious) large crusty rolls containing a slab of strong cheddar, when the landlord felt like it. Instead, Mr P booked a table at the Crown and Anchor in nearby Lugwardine. He’d not eaten there since 25 years before, when he had invited a neighbour - an 85 year-old small-holder - for a birthday lunch after a morning spent at the annual Trumpet ploughing match. His guest, from old-fashioned farming stock, didn’t possess a car, mowed his lawn with a scythe and farmed with an antique International Harvester tractor that had to be started with TVO. He told Mr Pernickety that he had never in his life thus far eaten out in a restaurant or pub and showed his appreciation by mopping up every drop of the gravy that had been sploshed over his steak and kidney pie with a piece of bread until his plate gleamed. At the same time, he was slaking Mr P’s thirst for knowledge of pre-war Herefordshire farming practices. For Mr Ps’ return visit and review, he was joined by the Bearded Biker, an old friend from his Cross Keys era - a native, a thinker and a man of sound views (that is to say similar views to Mr P’s) who has always spent most of his leisure time aiming a battered surf board at Welsh beaches or polluting the silence of the Cambrian landscape on one of his ancient motor-bikes. He and Mr P had a lot to catch up and spent a full couple of hours at a traditional pub table on the gently sloping lawn in front of the somewhat

disjointed but picturesque old black-and-white hostelry. Inside, the place looked much as he remembered it, unpretentious and reassuringly vintage, if a little sprucer than when the bar was presided over by an engaging, though more or less permanently inebriated landlord (whose wife, coincidentally, had attended the same Shepton Mallet convent school as the seven-year-old Mr P.) Under Covid conditions, it wasn’t possible to make assessments of those other aspects of country inns that preoccupy Mr P finds - the mood of the place, the quality of debate in the bar, the music, the lighting and so on, but back in the days when Mr P was a regular client at the Crown and Anchor, it was there that he’d enjoyed his first glug of Hobson’s Best Bitter, a favourite ever since. Disappointingly, Hobsons is no longer served there, but a pint of Butty Bach was a good enough substitute. The menu is short, offering broadly English pub food, although the Bearded Biker ordered what looked like a plateful of stout chips, which turned out to be Halloumi fries – deep-fried Greek cheese. There was enough for Mr P to eat a couple, finding them surprisingly tasty while his own chicken liver pate with Melba toast was good, too. As a main course, his companion hoovered up a minced beef and onion pie with the enthusiasm of a hungry Herefordian, while Mr P struggled with a Herefordshire portion of chicken and chips. There was too much of both for his modest appetite and the chicken was short on flavour as well as being too dry to enjoy. Nevertheless, reflecting on the plight of the starving millions in the Horn of Africa, he ate the lot (although this bestowed no obvious benefit on the starving ms). grass roots Extreme weather, 6000 miles away but already just round the corner?
I
T was breakfast time and I was thumbing through a newspaper which was once a quality broadsheet. It is no longer a broadsheet and, as for the quality, that’s variable. The problem is – I can’t seem to live without this paper and its puzzles pages. This was a souvenir edition, to commemorate something most of its readers wanted quickly to forget! Having briefly studied the quiz page, I found, just next to it in foreign news, an article which I quickly realised had the potential to mar the quality of breakfast times in the future. The piece was about almonds and California. I think I knew the main facts in the story long ago, but I had somehow managed to file them at the back of my mind under the heading – for action next month, or maybe next decade! You see, for me, almonds are not just a small bag of nuts which hide, gathering dust, at the back of a kitchen cupboard. They are a tasty ingredient of the large packs of muesli to which I am addicted. Anyway, the article carried a map, not just to show us where California is, but to highlight in various roasting shades of yellow, red, and dark brown, the severity of the drought affecting the state which provides most of the USA’s fruit and vegetables. California also supplies four-fifths of the world’s almonds. And these almonds drink water at an astonishing rate. According to reports, it takes twelve litres of water to grow each one of the nuts. In old measures, that is getting on for three imperial gallons. An awful lot of water for one small nut. So much so that the farmer at the centre of this report, fearing much more drought to come, had ruefully abandoned his nut trees and given up growing almonds for good. Far and wide down the western side of North America, the intense heat wave, which began in late June, caused climate records to be broken. And this followed many bad years this century for growing crops. In Canada, we were told, a small place called Lytton, in British Columbia, was now the hottest place on the continent. And then, within hours, the town was gone! Most of its homes had been razed to the ground by a fire caused by the extreme heat. South of the border, Washington state, better known for massive annual rainfall totals, was entering the record books for a new reason. In the other Washington, DC - the nation’s capital, a national newspaper was alarmed. The Washington Post said the western USA was already years into “a potentially disastrous “megadrought”, with 60 per cent of the landscape experiencing an “extreme” or “exceptional” drought – the two most severe categories.
46
And, the Post went on, “…according to the US Drought Monitor, that means ‘water shortages are widespread, surface water is depleted, and federal irrigation water deliveries are extremely low. That drought will continue
Lytton, British Columbia
to dry the soil and make it easier for the air to heat up – in turn desiccating the landscape even further.’ ” In Death Valley National Park, which straddles California and Nevada, one roadside heat display read “56 degrees C – 133 degrees F”. It seems that, down the west coast, the only escape was to be close to the sea, where temperatures have been much lower. The trouble is that a huge slice of the USA’s fruit, vegetables and yes - nuts are grown some way from the coast. And water supplies have become heavily stressed and reduced over the last twenty years. On a visit there in around 2005, I was told the “snowpack”, sitting on the sierras, gave the state about half of its water supply. Nowadays that figure is down to about one-third. There is less precipitation. And what snow there is tends to melt too fast in the spring. As for groundwater, reports suggest that the most fertile part of California is in the grip of a long-term crisis, as water authorities have had to drill deeper and deeper to find supplies. For those of us who are six thousand miles from this climate crisis, there is an obvious question. How far has extreme weather in Britain and western Europe already begun to threaten our water supplies, damage our agriculture, and cause significant casualties? Remember the thousands who died of heat stroke in Paris in 2003? Just as I was recalling that summer, I got an email message from the Met Office, listing some of the more alarming effects climate change will have on Britain’s weather. It told me that the number of extremely hot days could rise from about ten a year, as we have now, to around forty. And days of intense and prolonged rain could go up from around seven a year to eleven. On that evening’s BBC news, I saw parts of West London under water. The Portobello Road, in Notting Hill, much loved by tourists, looked more like a river. As for the actions we can take, avoiding almonds is perhaps trivial. But the big actions, led by making deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, are pressing and vital. For drought and extreme heat are shaping up to cost thousands of lives and to undermine countless livelihoods, in the years to come. Julian O’Halloran
