Rags to Riches
W
ELL this is a turn up for the books; today’s editorial is a genuine feel-good story about a Romanian. No its not about that jammy teenager who was so busy getting A stars at A level she didn’t have time to practice her tennis but luckily managed, although a 400 to 1 outsider, to win the American Open in straight sets! It’s about a down and out old geezer who was living in the garbage dump at the back of a block of flats who became an overnight sensation in the European art world. Ion Bârlădeanu had began making film inspired satirical collages in the 70’s but only in secret as he well knew that making fun of Ceausescu would probably get you a bullet in the head. When the regime collapsed at the end of the 80’s, Ion was made homeless and ended up in the garbage room, basement of a Bucharest tower block. Despite the crummy living standards the garbage did provide a lot of useful collage material and so he began a series of surrealist artworks conceived like films and ranging from light-hearted satire to subversive film noir. H i s h o a rd o f c o l l a g e s remained unseen until in 2007 he showed a couple to another artist who happened to be looking for materials in the garbage. This artist, sensing that he had seen something special, alerted gallery owner Dan Popescu who then spent the next 3 weeks persuading Ion to permit him to show the works in his gallery. His first show was a big success in Romania and was soon followed by shows at Basel Art Fair, a show in Paris and subsequently shows all over Europe.
He even met Angelina Joli in Paris “You know the big American film star” Email: info@broadsheep.com although as Ion points out “She is not Website: www.broadsheep.com really that big, no taller than me in real life.” In 2017 he had a London show at the wonderful ‘The Gallery of Everything’ in Chiltern St. There are a couple of short films about him you can see online h t t p s : / / w w w. b b c . c o . u k / n e w s / a v / w o r l d - e u ro p e - 1 4 2 9 3 1 4 5 https://youtu.be/FqqNstRkBQk Anyway I was so taken by his rags to riches tale that, being a bit skint myself, I have decided to become a collage artist and I am pleased to present my first work to the readers of Broad Sheep.
Here it is, it’s called Wake Up Boris!
(What the hell is this meant to be? Ed) It’s a satirical, political art piece.
(What’s satirical about it?) Well I am in my pyjamas and Boris is not. (You don’t really understand what satirical means do you? Come to that you probably don’t know what art is.)

Monsters of the Marches T
HE nights are drawing in, but not so far as to keep a person with a bicycle away from the New Inn at Pembridge. So into the saddle we leap, and ho for the thirst-promoting outward voyage down the back lanes and the sobering return home. An inky roof of cloud is crawling across the sky, a low sun is smearing black tree-shadows across the stubble, and to the west Hergest Ridge and the Radnor Forest hunch threatening shoulders against the world. On an evening like this the thoughts turn to monsters. There are plenty of them round these parts. There is Black Vaughan, whose unsuitable behaviour vis-a-vis the widow and the orphan led to his hanging – which did not, however, get rid of him, as he returned in the form of a black dog, a fiery-eyed bull, and a whirlwind, and had to be prayed down into a bottle by twelve priests. (The bottle was then stored under running water as per best practice, and was later broken by a digger driver, with horrid consequences that have been hushed up ever since. Never heard of them? Shows that it works).
There is also the Devil, who as all the world knows lives on Radnor Forest, and is kept there only by a ring of nine churches dedicated to St Michael and All Angels. Recent economic stringency in the Church of Wales has led to difficulties with gutters and roofs, which would in time have led to the collapse of some of these churches; but it is surprising how quickly the restoration funds brass up when it is pointed out that the consequences of disintegration will make the final phases of Ghostbusters look like a primary school picnic.

Hold on, though. It is no good saying, well, that’s the kind of thing you have to expect in Wales. Herefordshire is just as bad. A couple of years ago someone dug up a fossil so horribly indicative of pnakotic activity that they instantly christened it Sollasina cthulhu. It has tentacles growing out of its head, and its discoverers... well, we haven’t seen them round Staunton for a while, and only H P Lovecraft could ... imply ... what might have happened to them. And of course there is the
twelfth-century Herefordian Walter Map, whose De Nugis Curialium is far too explicit about the Dance of the Dead, the reanimation of the deceased, and the malign spirits that terrorise the hills and rivers of his native county. But as we pedal on towards the New Inn, here comes a ray of sun, lancing through the clouds to demonstrate that there is hope in the world, and all this monster stuff is merely a figment of the thirsty imagination. The heart lifts, the pedals fly, and there is a song on the lips, for the bike is electric and there is plenty of breath available for singing. It will be a pleasure to take this blind bend, heeled steeply, like Mike Hailwood at the TT Whoa! What is this? A huge green thing is roaring towards me from the bend, belching smoke. Abort, abort, abort! Bike and rider fly into the hedge. The tractor roars by at forty, spanning the lane from verge to verge with its enormous wheels, dragging a gigantic trailer full of maize chippings. The driver, who is just eighteen, is texting. The whole works is bound for an anaerobic digester where the chippings will be turned into biogas. The system was designed to turn waste into energy, which is all right. The agriconmen have swivelled it to process maize. This produces biogas, which is all right. It produces foulness in the rivers of Herefordshire, which is not all right. And it produces money, which is not all right either, for some of the money is provided by you and me, dear taxpayers, to make sure the agricultural community does not have to hang on to its Range Rovers for more than a year. Pull the bike out of the hedge and the twigs out of the hair. There are still plenty of monsters in Herefordshire. Two pints, please, Jane. Second thoughts, make that three. William Cobbett

CONQUEST, BROMYARD 1 Oct THE LAST BUS (12A) Conquest Theatre, Tenbury Rd, Bromyard. Details 01885 488575
This fact-base Cold War drama sees MI5 recruiting a boozy, somewhat shifty salesman, Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) to act as a go-between with Russian double agent, Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze, BRIDGE OF SPIES), during business trips to a suitably drab 1960s Moscow. Believing that he’s helping avert nuclear Armageddon the initially reluctant Wynne soon warms to his task and he and Penkovsky, with more to lose than his British handler, become firm friends. However writer Tom O’Connor (THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD) and director Dominic Cooke (ON CHESIL BEACH) effectively convey the risks that both men take and as a sub-plot relations between Wynne and his wife Sheila (Jessie Buckley, so mesmerizing in the WILD ROSE) become increasingly strained. It all ends badly of course, but Cumberbatch’s performance, especially after he’s caught by the KGB, is mighty impressive and archive footage of Wynne being released back to the UK makes it all worthwhile. HERSELF (15)
Living in a depressing airport hotel with her two children after being attacked by her brutish husband (Ian Lloyd Anderson), Irish housewife Sandra (Clare Dunne) is obliged to take on two jobs to survive, one of these as a cleaner for the imperious Peggy, (national treasure Harrier Walter). So far, so very Ken Loach, but Peggy actually has some gold buried deep in her privileged middle-class heart and offers Sandra a plot of her land so that she might literally build a new home for her family. Dunne, who co-wrote the script and is perhaps best-known for her theatre work, gives a compelling, believable turn as a woman determinate to overcome the considerable odds this involves, laced with a winning optimism. MAMMA MIA! and IRON LADY director Phyllida Lloyd again proves her versatility in crafting a highly engaging work pretty much bereft of the mawkishness it might otherwise exhibit.

Carol A trip to Shrewsbury‘s Old Market Hall for their Rainbow Film Festival will reward you with several great films addressing gender and colour issues. Best known is surely CAROL, Todd Haynes’ moving story of forbidden love between unhappily married socialite, the eponymous Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) and awkward shop assistant ,Therese (Rooney Mara). Based on a Patricia Highsmith novel set in the 1950s New York, it has some remarkably explicit but never prurient love scenes but the totally convincing chemistry between the two leads is what makes the film so riveting. In the no less illiberal setting of present day Tbilisi, AND THEN WE DANCED finds Swedish writer/director Levan Akin following ensemble ballet dancer Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani) losing his emotional and professional balance after the arrival of a younger dancer (Bachi Valishvili), auguring rivalry and desire that threatens to derail his career. Other films worth catching include NO ORDINARY MAN, a documentary about the late, trans-gender jazz pianist, Billy Tipton and SOCRATES, a low-budget but impressive account of a gay teenager (Christian Malheiros) made homeless and fending for himself in a hostile Sao Paulo.

HEN Mr Pernickety first came to live in the Marches he was, like any curious incomer and aspiring scribbler, inevitably enchanted by those empty, craggy undulations that lie west of the Long Mynd, where Shropshire subtly merges into Wales, and Mary Webb set her tales of rustic melancholy. To drive the slender lanes beneath the western flank of that long ridge is to enter a slightly separate world, and Mr P always feels a tremor of otherness when he does. The last place he reviewed for the Woolly Organ in this land of deep dingles and Cold Comfort farms was the excellent Coach House at Norbury, now sadly downscaled to B & B only, perhaps another victim of the beastly virus. The sparse population in this quarter may suggest that there isn’t, in any case, much call for places to eat, but there are punters around – many of them intrepid, committed foot-travellers, there to suck in the clean air and unspoilt scenery – who need sustenance, and at Bridges, a crossing point on the young River Onny, there is a strategically placed inn. It has been a sporadic stopping off point for Mr P for some twenty-five years, and its recent acquisition from the Three Tuns Brewery of Bishops Castle by new people spurred Mr P to revisit the pub. Confusingly it has been known as the Horseshoe Inn, but seems to have settled its identity as the Bridges pub. It received some public exposure about fifteen years ago when it was a location for the Only Fools and Horses spinoff, The Green Green Grass.
The short menu (pleasingly without a 95p in sight) suggested that ingredients would be at least fresh. As his regular readers will know, and cruelly enjoy, Mr P is always ready to identify and condemn a chef/cook who is abusing the pallets of his punters, but in this review they will be disappointed….
Mr Pernickety was accompanied by his old friend the Wrinkle Rocker, who had seen more of the place in recent years. The WR has a weakness for open-mic nights of a blues/folk variety and had regularly participated in such sessions at the Bridges, on one occasion finding himself snowed in, unable to leave and playing until local sparrows were engaged in their traditional dawn flatulence. There are still regular Wednesday night Irish music sessions, and visits from boater-toting, hanky flapping Morris dancers, for those who enjoy that kind of thing.
The WR asked for a main course of roast chicken with gravy, salad and aioli. He loved this unusual juxtaposition, very happy with the quality of the poultry and well-dressed salad. He and Mr P shared a bowl of chips with a tomato salad as good as Mr P has tasted in a long time, and a worthy addendum to his potato, cheese and onion pie, delivered in flawless, short crust pastry – outstanding and beyond the scale of normal ‘pub grub’.
The pub, set beside the little river, looks as if it was once a traditional farm and dwelling. Long and one room deep, it has had a glass-walled eating space added with a large log-burner and views across the gardens. Outside, back and front, are tables on a greensward by the brook. The interior is almost entirely free of nasty, kitsch accoutrements that many misguided landlords think an English country pub needs and nothing jarred on Mr P’s highly tuned sensitivity to such things.

Perhaps the best hors d’oeuvre in eating at the Bridges is the journey there, but Mr P and his guest also shared a smoked mackerel paté which delivered an instant little endorphin rush with its creamy, well-defined texture and subtle seasoning (lemon and paprika?). It was served with a salad (“greens come from our no-dig, organic garden”) which consisted of lovely light fresh leaves (not an iceberg to be seen) and a sophisticated dressing.
Before lunch Mr P tried a half of the Long Mynd cider on offer. Dry and balanced, at 6% it was pleasing but too strong for driving home, so he and the WR drank beer rather than wine with their lunch in this rustic place – a Three Tuns pale ale and a Salopian Gold. There are puddings on offer, though Mr P didn’t eat any. He will next time, for there will surely be a next time soon, perhaps to a sound-track of Celtic fiddle. Mr Pernickety

grass roots Net Zero Pledge Relying on Failing Carbon Capture
W
HAT is it about teenage women? Wherever you look, they seem to be calling the shots. In tennis, the US Open winner and runner-up were both under twenty. And, on the subject of climate change, the dominant personality for some time now has been the Swedish campaigner, Greta Thunberg. It is now three years since, at the age of only 15, she began her lone Friday afternoon climate strike outside the parliament in Stockholm. Within a year, school students were following her lead all over the world. As we head towards the November climate summit in Glasgow, Thunberg has already seized the initiative. Back in June, she implied that she was unlikely to show up in Glasgow. Then, in late August, she told BBC Scotland she might appear at the conference after all. By creating doubt about her attendance, she has left Westminster playing catch-up. On the matter of cutting greenhouse gas emissions, Boris Johnson and his ministers have long tried to suggest to the wider world that they are ahead of the game. In reality, however, the UK has so far been high on pledges and targets, but low on delivery. Back in the summer, Thunberg zoomed in on Britain’s routine claim to be a world leader in fighting climate change. For many years now the government has been boasting that the UK has cut its output of greenhouse gases by around 45% since 1990. But Thunberg firmly rejected this assertion. She said, “Of course, if you don’t include all emissions, the statistics are going to look much nicer.” The main group of emissions routinely excluded in the UK figures are, of course, all those that go into manufacturing the many goods, like cars, that Britain imports from abroad. It is only when you ignore those and focus on the gases emitted within Britain’s borders, the so-called territorial emissions, that the UK’s record looks OK. However, if you include in the calculations the greenhouse gases that arise from all the stuff we consume and import from abroad, the decrease in emissions since the 1990s drops sharply, to about 26%. A real problem for the future is that, in pledging to reach Net Zero by 2050, the government is staking an awful lot on technology for burying carbon underground. This is known as carbon capture and storage, or CCS. About fifteen years ago some reputable energy economists were predicting that the gases pouring from the chimneys of fossil fuel power plants would soon be come insignificant, as carbon capture and storage took off. However, more than a decade later, carbon capture is still over the horizon. In a nutshell, at any useful scale, it is non-existent. That was clearly shown by a recent study of carbon capture projects worldwide, carried out by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at Manchester
Teenage Climate Activist Greta Thunberg
University. It found that there were just 26 plants on the planet capturing and storing carbon dioxide. Between them they were sequestering a mere 0.1 % of world fossil fuel emissions. One recent carbon capture project in the USA was the Petra Nova facility in Texas. It opened in 2017. Managers hoped it would extract about 90% of the greenhouse gases that would otherwise be emitted. But in the event the project lost about a hundred days per year of production because of breakdowns. In May 2020 the plant was finally mothballed. According to one US anti-fossil fuel group, “CCS sceptics sought to interpret it as a death knell for future projects.” And it claimed that Petra Nova’s failure was “a red flag for investors in coal-fired CCS projects”. Here in the UK, the Manchester team learned, there is no operational carbon capture going on anywhere in the country. In the wider world, most of the carbon dioxide captured so far has been used to extract more fuel from oil wells, in a process known as Enhanced Oil Recovery. So, far from reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the technique has mostly been used to extract even more fossil fuel from below the earth’s surface! A climate change expert at the Tyndall Centre, Professor Kevin Anderson, who was not part of the centre’s CCS study, has said recently, “I am very sceptical of the negative emissions technologies...I think it’s really important that we progress our understanding on these...but I actually think we should assume they do not work, when we develop emissions scenarios.” And the leading international affairs think tank, Chatham House, concluded last year that the government’s net-zero strategy was “over-reliant” on carbon capture. When taken along with the Tyndall Centre work, that verdict suggests that a big chunk of the UK’s net zero strategy amounts to little more than pie in the sky. Julian O’Halloran

M
Y text for today is: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ uk-wales-58491003 in which a councillor says she is “fully supportive of wild flowers” but does not believe they should be allowed to grow near people’s homes. Way to go. Twenty years ago BP hired PR consultants to find a way to shift the blame for global warming from themselves to the individual consumer. They came up with “carbon footprints” and provided a calculator for us to use. We swallowed the concept whole. Many fraught conversations ensued about consumerism and whether we should fly, drive, eat meat, burn wood, be born, have children, be cremated etc.. Even breathing causes CO2. Ironically the idea came back to bite BP as we compared our size 8 carbon moccasins with their brutal jackboot print, size 8 billion, but it exemplifies the oligarchy’s divide and rule tactic of quietly shifting the blame from themselves to each one of us, and boy! oh boy! did we feel guilty. Suckered! This is also how governments divert attention from their green negligence and reduce their responsibilities, while adding to their dictatorial powers. Individual moral blackmail also applies to recycling, fashion, mental health, obesity, low wages, crime, addiction and more. It’s all your fault! The new Sins for the new Apocalypse. Never mind bad air, foul rivers, poor education, slum housing, low wages etc. which are beyond individual control - (but not beyond group action) - and are the oligarchy’s responsibility.
50
Here is a trivial example - part of the green smokescreen. It shows how ridiculously far “they” are prepared to dig into our private lives, and to put us on the back foot in order to shrug off blame. As part of Planning you may have to install bat houses, sparrow hotels or dormouse suspension bridges. With no comeback - in the Brecon Beacons, the Parks Authority don’t even hold elections. These follies disguise the authorities’ failure to halt the wholesale loss of biodiversity across the countryside which is due - not to householders - but to agricultural practices. And it rarely goes well for wild animals to be fostered by humans. Nest boxes become predators’ larders, while retaining parasites season to season, feeding stations spread Trichomoniasis, domestic cats decimate our small birds, and badgers are both protected and yet are shot as the fall guys for TB. The planners’ bijou dolls’ houses are a form of greenwash, fiddling on the margins, which diverts the blame for wholesale ecocide to the individual and his/her tiny plot under the pretence that wild petting a tiny proportion of our darling native mammals and birds will make the difference, while the entire expanse of the countryside and the insect base of the food chain becomes ever more decimated, ever more chemically controlled, under our noses, a series
Bespoke Suspension bridge for dormice, costing £60-£80K
of intensive chicken farms and monocultural deserts surrounding Sites of Sacred Scientific Interest, little oases of complex life under siege amid the coniferous forests, new grass, annual crops, alien species and the barren bracken-covered moors, all of which somehow still add up to AOBs - actually Areas of Outstanding Bureaucracy. Nobody is sure whether any dormice have ever used the bespoke suspension bridges. (Price £60-80,000). If the threat to the species is that critical, in a particular habitat, you shouldn’t be disturbing them anyway. The quaint idea that we can provide an alternative is beyond our competence. With a few significant exceptions, our buildings are not a significant threat, any more than another nest box is a solution. Man-made materials cover a mere 2% of the UK, and an extension, the repair of a road or the installation of a sparrow hotel (dry tinder under your eaves) has no effect compared to the cyclical holocaust wreaked on 90% of the land by farmers, water companies, foresters, chemical corporations and gamekeepers - on our behalf of course. Insisting on these petty solutions perpetuates the illusion that experts are all-knowing and can or should select for special species or control nature by large-scale gardening, belittling the vast regenerative power of Nature, if we should let it loose, despite the fact that past and future ecospheres are exponentially more complex and vigorous than anything we can possibly understand or reengineer, let alone to some retrotopian faux nostalgic vision of Arcadia or Eden. Question: Which century’s climate do you prefer? Answer: The one that’s coming is the only one that matters. It’s like Afghanistan; we shouldn’t be there because we are (a) part of the problem and (b) aren’t smart enough to solve the problem. Just leave! We can re-plant broad-leaved trees asap where they used to be in place of our artificial monocultures to kick start incremental natural carbon capture, biodiversity, ash replacement, flood mitigation and water quality improvement (they do all those things) but we should then leave the emergent forest to find its own balance. Leave Mother Nature alone, she knows

what to do. Concentrate on limiting the ecocidal effects of agriculture, chickens, sewage, softwoods, sheep, invasive species, bracken, grouse, petro-chemicals, pollution and climate change - particularly in your own neighbourhood, piece by piece. Make sure wild-life has somewhere just to exist, near you, by joining together to protect and increase their habitat. Many of us already care about our carbon footprints and invest time, professional skills and energy locally and together in practical green projects. Maybe having been so effectively “divided and ruled” even more collective work is needed as the climate emergency grows, agile local projects that sidestep lumbering governments to minimise climate change and maximise biodiversity. Projects that create more results than protests. Bio-char, appliance repair workshops, treeplanting, electric vehicles, alternative energy, tracking air/ river pollution, bees, wild meats, wildlife corridors, + many more. It’s a rapidly growing field. Eco-awareness courses. So please don’t cut the grass; let a thousand wild flowers bloom, including near peoples’ homes. Next month: a Beacons charity planted 123,000 broadleaved trees last year on largely barren sites. It’s a new model, using new methods of planting, maintenance, ownership and funding, which sidesteps government obstructions. It’s a formula other community groups could adopt or adapt. www.facebook.com/ StumpUpForTrees/ www.stumpupfortrees.org/ Hugh Colvin
