My Next Million
NE of my most overused phrases is “Here is how I’m going to make my next million”. I know on the surface I may appear to be a scruffy, failed musician with an ageing electric bike, don’t be fooled. Underneath lurks the heart of an Aston Martin driving, Savile Row suited, Dragon Denned multi-millionaire with a business brain that never sleeps. If you don’t believe me have a listen to my latest audacious plan. I have decided to commence development of a new app that will turn your crappy, out of date, mobile phone into a metal detector and with the help of an upside down, selfie stick it will instantly bring access to buried treasure within the reach of 61 billion mobile users and consequently untold wealth to me.
My inspiration for this comes from two lads, George Powell and Layton Davies. Their story dates back more than 1,000 years, to early medieval Britain. In a field near Leominster, an unknown person (most likely a member of a retreating Viking army) buried gold jewellery, silver ingots and hundreds of coins. The treasures were lost until one morning in June 2015 when metal detectorists Powell, from Newport, and Davies, from Pontypridd, began sweeping the land.
The hoard Powell and Davies stumbled upon included a gold ring, believed to date from the 9th century. When the pair uncovered the long lost trove, they assumed they would be rich and their lives would change forever. But you need permission from a landowner to detect on their land, and Powell and Davies did not have permission to be in the field where they made the discovery.
Peter Reavill was a Finds Liaison Officer for the British Museum, and was the sort of person Powell and Davies should have turned to for advice about the find. “There was this rumour going around, which means something important had been found, and the details were that someone’s found a massive medieval coin hoard and there were at least 300 coins,” Mr Reavill said. Estimates of the hoard’s value varied from £2m to £10m. He tracked down an email address for Powell and Davies and told them he had heard they had found objects, which qualified as treasure, and reminded them they had 14 days to report it. Powell and Davies failed to follow his advice. They did give up the jewellery to Museums Wales, but the bulk of the 300 coins remained “lost”. At this point, police began investigating. In 2019, Powell and Davies’ actions culminated in them both being convicted of theft and concealing their finds. Powell was jailed for 10 years, later reduced to six-and-a-half on appeal, while Davies was jailed for eightand-a-half, later reduced to five.
Powell and Davies served their sentences but were later ordered by a court to
repay around £600,000 each, because the judge said he believed they were still unlawfully concealing up to 270 coins and jewellery with a view to profiting from them. After an enforcement hearing in September 2024, Davies was sentenced to a further five years and three months in prison for failing to repay the £600,000. Powell, however, went on the run; Powell was eventually arrested and detained in Edinburgh, before being released from custody in December. But when he was due to appear in court in January 2025 to answer the charge he went on the run again. And there, so far, he remains.
Anyway enough of this exciting story let’s get back to my money-making plan. For some reason, (probably because I was so busy with my other business interests) had failed to check on whether I had any competition in the detecting apps world. I was horrified to discover there are thousands of metal detecting apps already on the market. Damn, what a bummer, still, I cheered up when a generous friend offered to lend me a real metal detector that had belonged to his Dad. Inspired by ‘Detectorists’ on TV, (how come Toby Jones is even more ubiquitous than Olivia Coleman these days?) I figured if I could snap up a quick Viking treasure trove or two I could offset the millions I might have made with the app. Next day I headed out to a local hot spot of historic interest and within minutes I made two important discoveries. 1. Metal Detecting is not as easy as it sounds even after reading the instruction booklet five times and 2. It’s as boring as hell.

Once, upon another time
THE airforce uses our valley to rehearse World War 3. Fighters rip up the sky and Hercules bombers trundle under the radar and over our roofs. Decades ago one of them didn’t make it over the ridge and crashed into the shoulder of the Goytre. Some people have a statue like at Rio or the Angel of the North, we have a Hercules tail fin. It mowed down a row of ragged larches along the skyline and scarred the thin layer of turf, but all that we can see this morning are a few gaunt sticks and the bomber’s tail sticking out of the mist like a whale fluke. It’s a memorial to the next War. “Lest we forget.” Down below a paddle steamer hoots twice as it comes in to dock at the pier by the new Lloyney Inn, behind the hill, and round the elbow from Rhos-y-Meirch. The ferry and the pub are packed with sheep farmers and salesmen, ne’er-do-wells and drifters. They’re on their way to the island market at Ludlow.
By now the valley has become a shallow sea-loch, and the waters are still spreading year by year west towards Beguildy. Houses on the flood plain which had been more than a mile away from the sea at the start of the century are now in danger. The new Wharf and the renamed pub, the Pilots’ Refuge, stand opposite the remains of the Mill, looking down on what’s left of the old Builders Arms and the Millhouse. Several cottages have been lost recently, overcome by the tidal bores that sweep up the fjord in Spring.
The ferry returns every other night to the little jetty, the reflection of its coloured lights glinting in the water, a brief stop for the gamblers and farmers, runaway slaves and Welshmen who travel on it from Bristol to Oswestry and on to the North, now that the plains of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire are under water. The North sea is now the Northern Ocean, Britain an archipelago, truly the British Isles. The boat is landing a few barrels, tea chests and trays of oranges, and taking on timber and lambs and the passengers who have walked down from the Mid Wales, from the Terminus at Llanbister Road. The dank foundations of the old farms can still be seen at low tide, Monaughty, Skyborry Green and Panpunton, like ground down jawbones. At low tide what once were water meadows are now acres of tidal mud flats as far as the eye can see. We board the Ap-Brane’s paddle-steamer from the Lloyney at 10 past 11 sharp, closing time, standing at the rail as it moves off down the estuary, picking up speed past where Knighton used to be (where in a deep pool squats an unlovely water spirit, the local gollum. The pilot follows the channel, marked out with buoys, along the path of the old river, gingerly lining up his course against the landmarks, the stones that stick out of the Mount and the ruined observatory on Stonewall Hill, a folly that was built by scientists to look out for asteroids, not looking hard enough in the other direction, inwards, missing the danger already within our walls.
Once, back on a visit, I walked out across the marsh at low tide, probing the ground at every step, every tussock, towards another gaunt silhouette. Twin lines of struts curve up out of the salt flats on a faraway spit, the remains of a wooden ship beached long ago amongst the sedge and the eelgrass. But the closer I come the more it resembles the ribcage of a huge fish, a whale or a plesiosaur. In the sandy soil there is a sequence of neck bones and then a skull where the figure-head should be, and at the stern a keel of vertebrae strewn across the mud, like a broken necklace. Amidships there’s a block and tackle and a pile of chains with links of bone. One fluke of an anchor sticks up in the hold next a miniature skiff which lies there with its ribs pressed flat, curled up like the perfect burial of a foetus.
In the same salt marsh, on another misty day, I came across a family of sleepers, the humped shapes of their bodies under the close cropped turf, like small hills, and closer to, a few coins and a ring, spectacles, grass growing through the frame where a lens had fallen out, a glove where a hand might lie in sleep, and in a certain light the blanched masks of their faces, like paper cutouts, sleeping beneath a fringe of leaves, on cold tussocky pillows. The wind had turned back the coverlet of rank grass from their shoulders. Round about them were the low outlines of walls, the map indeed of our home, pulled down by storms and the stones smoothed over by the wind and by the restless sand that snakes across the dunes.
Further out, but still a hundred yards from the sea there was a group of swimmers doing the crawl through the frozen marsh, longer fronds of sedge-grass growing where their hands cut the surface and where their heels kicked up. Their heads were half turned, eyes shut, their mouths half full of water. From another time. Us. Escaping. ….. Not.

A Chat with Jesse Norman
LAST month I sat down over a couple of small plates and a glass of beer in a bar in Hereford to talk to Conservative MP, Jesse Norman about the state of his patch – our patch – and what he intends to do about it. Jesse has been Member for South Herefordshire since 2010. In the 2019 Tory landslide he was returned with a majority of 19,686. Last year, this was reduced to a skin-of-the-teeth 1,271. Pundits will disagree about the reasons for this – the dangerous farce of Alexander “Boris” Johnson’s premiership; the tragedy of Ms Truss’s personal fantasies; government ineptness in creating HS2, a disastrous Brexit, and the handling of Covid 19 (in which the only true hero was the MP’s wife, Kate Bingham, a non-politician appointed Chair of the Vaccine Taskforce who successfully oversaw the procurement , production and delivery of the vaccine.)
Nevertheless, while North Herefordshire had concluded that backing Bill Wiggin again would amount to voting for a sack of potatoes, and opted for a fresh, green look, Jesse managed to fi ght off advances by Reform and Labour. Now in opposition, he is Shadow Leader of the House.
I will admit to a small measure of positive bias in my perception of the Hereford MP – not because I’m a Tory –I’m not; nor because I’m a Brexiter – I made my views clear in last December’s Broad Sheep. I was looking forward to seeing Jesse because, before he became a politician at the age 48, he was a philosopher; I don’t mean a chap with a beard sitting in the inglenook of a pub, but a university lecturer in the subject and a fellow of All Souls, Oxford, also author of a much-praised book on 18th century father of Free Markets, Adam Smith. Just this morning I heard him on Radio 4 talking with great lucidity on Smith in the context of the current disruption from the US. Another reason for positive bias was his unforgiving review in the Financial Times of Johnson’s book, Unleashed (Unlashed might have been more appropriate.)
But of course, I had to ask about more germane, if highly toxic issues, like the quality of the water flowing in the beloved River Wye. Apart from lawyers acting for Dwr Cymru and Cargill chicken factories, no one is in any doubt that this beautiful river, which holds so many happy memories for all of us, is becoming a toxic open sewer, polluted by human and chicken effluent, and agricultural phosphate run-off. Jesse says that the Tories had promised £35m to fund a clean-up project, though, sadly, not before last year’s election. The current government have pledged a paltry £1m to be spent on research. Jesse, to his credit and in an admirable act of non-partisan coalition with his neighbouring Green MP, Ellie Chowns, in February asked Parliament’s leave to bring in a Bill “requiring the Secretary of State to publish and implement a plan for cleaning and improving the water quality of the River Wye.”
How far that would go, if it gets anywhere, is anyone’s
guess. As MP for a rural constituency Jesse must be seen to side with the agriculturists. When I suggest that mass-producing chickens has little to do with traditional agriculture and should be sited on industrial estates, where infrastructure to process waste efficiently could be installed, he says the farmers wouldn’t stand for it.
The other principal culprits, Dwr Cymru, he points out, rightly, are a not-for-profit set-up without shareholders and “working for the good of their customers”, unlike the robber barons who characterise the bulk of the UK’s privatised water industry. Despite this, though, Dwr Cymru is spilling more raw sewage than ever into the Wye. The fact that it isn’t sending profits to hedge funds in Australia doesn’t make it smell any better.
There is no doubt that the Hereford MP who is certainly capable of initiating and pushing through a solution, is deeply personally committed to saving the river. However, realistically, he must know that this will mean stepping on some agricultural toes. Too bad, and there are of course, many farmers who don’t contribute to the pollution, and love the river as much as anyone.
Another local issue on which the MP is deeply committed is the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering, or NMITE which opened its doors in Hereford three and a half years ago. Building on the success in further education of the Hereford Art College, Jesse campaigned for NMITE from the start and raised a substantial amount to fund an institution that will bring money, jobs and kudos to the City, while providing real opportunities to achieve good engineering degrees for young aspiring engineers in the region.
In many ways, Jesse is a refreshing politician to talk to. While his answers, like any MP’s, can be obfuscating, I have the sense that he would rather tell the whole truth, where possible, and he obviously loves Herefordshire. On top of that, he gave me some useful notes on 17th century Dutch philosopher, Spinoza, for a book I’m writing – working title: God is not a Bloke.

The first of two films featuring complex relationships comes from mainstream auteur, Steven Soderbergh (the Oceans franchise, Logan Lucky, Prescence etc) and features two of my favourite actors on mesmerising form. Michael Fassbender is George, a straight-laced secret agent charged with determining who has stolen intel critical to the safety of our nuclear security. Trouble is, his wife Kathryn (Cate Blanchett) proves to be a main suspect and as the story unfolds we discover the fragile bonds that hold them together and the Machiavellian nature of Kathryn in particular. Thrown into the mix are resentful colleague (Tom Burke, T.V’s Strike) Naomie Harris (Skyfall, The Wasp ) the agency’s in-house shrink and their boss played by Pierce Brosnan who’s maturing nicely into senior roles, which makes for a compelling watch. And being a Soderbergh film scripted by long-term collaborator Dovid Koepp, it rolls along at a fair old pace and has an agreeably glossy sheen to it.

Co-star Jesse Eisenberg’s second directorial feature is seriously good film that cleverly manages to be serious as well as often loud-out-loud funny. Bravely based on his personal experience, Eisenberg’s David is the grandson of a woman who miraculously survived a Polish concentration camp who decides to pay her homage with a guided tour to visit the camp and other landmarks of the holocaust. Along for the ride, and ride is initially how he sees it, is his wise-cracking cousin, Benji (Keiran Culkin, T.V’s Succession) who was also very fond of David’s grandmother and the joy of the film is the interplay between the two which ultimately changes them both in profound ways. But in the process we get plenty of laughs, even some slapstick, plus some great takeaways courtesy of other members of the select tour group run by a young Oxford professor who isn’t in fact Jewish, and especially an ageing divorcee (Jennifer Grey, Dirty Dancing).

The Green Dragon, Little Stretton
FORGIVE Mr Pernickety’s self-indulgence. He’s been amusing himself with the negative nuances of words that rhyme with Trump: hump, lump, chump. tump, sump, grump, bump, dump, rump, frump, and the curious fact that if the letters MP in that word are replaced with SS, they produce Truss, another word associated with wrecking economies and restricted self-awareness. These things are not coincidental. They are warnings, sadly ignored by a slim majority of unsophisticated US voters who have gifted the Free World with an absurd, sad clown as Leader. It’s almost fair that those who gave us Donald T. Rump should now be punished with substantially higher prices for anything they buy from Great Britain – but grossly unfair on the near 50% who weren’t seduced by the vacuous celebrity, of this spectacularly untalented narcissist.
Mr P doesn’t imagine that Pres. Trump consumes much produce from our own lovely region, as he relies on artificial hormone-enhanced processed US beefburgers to preserve his own distinctive rump….
Having shifted these thoughts from his sternum, Mr Pernickety will get on with his job for the Woolly Organ.
There are times when Mr P doesn’t want either the formality, silver service and pristine napery (if only!) of a distinctive restaurant, nor the corner of a battered deal table in a noisy bar. Luckily this region does include a number of traditional pubs that serve food that is imaginatively and skilfully cooked without recourse to the services of Messrs Brake Bros.
If a reader is driving northward on the old Roman Road to Wroxeter (now the A49) a mile past Marshbrook, and takes the left turn to Little Stretton, below the southern slopes of the Long Mynd, the first inn he will find on his left is the whitewashed Green Dragon. The pretty pub advertises the amenity of a “Beer Garden” a term so discredited as to conjure, for Mr P at least a vision of an area of chipped and gum-spattered paving or dying sward, littered with cigarette butts and reeking of sour ale. However at the Green Dragon, the area is a clean, open and perfectly amenable garden with a decent timber climbing castle for bored young adventurers, with a shelter for those who wish to stay dry while poisoning themselves with tobacco.
Inside, the pub is a welcoming, low-ceilinged space, beamed and flagged, with walls liberally covered in knick-knackery and pictures of local interest and interesting locals. Mr P’s first impression was of a warm, comfortable buzz of conversation. The furniture looks like that which you might expect in the home of your rural granny, reassuring and characterful. Mr P had brought as his guest a longstanding thespian friend, formerly a Corporate Lawyer for a large Mid-Wales clothing company. He has a great fund of witty reminiscences
of legal meetings in bizarre circumstances all over the world with which Mr P reckoned he would more than earn his lunch. Settled in large, upholstered wing chairs, unexpectedly high enough to eat at a pleasantly worn pine table, Mr P and the CL ordered ale (Butty Bach for Mr P) and inspected a menu with no hint of mass production, giving Mr P confidence that genuine in-house cuisine was going on.
Mr P and his guest shared a starter – a Chef’s Board of amorphous battered lumps – chicken tenders, chilli cheese bites, cod bites, mozzarella sticks and dips. A tasty mix of soft and crunchy textures. The CL, a little suspicious at first, started to enjoy himself and, to Mr P’s regret, ate his full share.
The CL chose one the chef’s specials for his main course: chicken roasted, with crushed new potatoes, in a garlic, white wine and mushroom sauce. He found the chicken succulent on the inside, though a tad dry at the outer edges, perhaps because it was served in large generous chunks. The sauce was delicious, he said, and he could have done with more. He was served more spuds than he needed but he wasn’t complaining; had he been a farmer lambing all night, he might have needed them.
Mr P spotted Brisket of Beef on the menu which he ordered because he’s always interested in what can be done with cheaper cuts. In this case the chef had managed to avoid producing a fluffy mass of overcooked, soggy meat, and deliverd a firm, succulent dish, the best treatment of brisket that Mr P has come across, served with super garlic mash and a rich red wine gravy – unusual, unexpected and absolutely not ordinary old pub food. No wonder the place has such a good reputation and loyal following. Mr P and the CL agreed that service was pleasant and sprightly without any imperative to “ENJOY!”. Mr P thinks the trifle he ate afterwards was an indulgence too far, but it did remind him of a distant childhood.
Offering well-executed, imaginative cooking, the Green Dragon is certainly worth a detour for those to whom these qualities matter.

Overhead Transmission Lines – the Power to Shock
OR decades, the main argument about electricity has been how it is generated.
But suddenly, it seems, there are disputes about where new power lines should go. Above ground or below ground? And who will decide?
Around my way, along the Wales-England border, we are lucky to have views of rolling hills, almost unspoiled by signs of industry, or by ugly brutalist development. Maybe, for some of us, this is a big factor in why we live here in the first place.
However, it seems that it’s the transmission lines themselves, which used to be put up by National Grid, which are starting to occupy a central place in the energy debate.
One projected route causing alarm in the east of England will take power through several counties to a point on the Thames Estuary. The pylons will follow a line about 115 miles in length.
It seems that the transmission industry was given a green light by the energy regulator to make an initial investment of hundreds of millions of pounds. And that fact alone has infuriated campaigners who oppose the project.
One group of objectors based in East Anglia rejoices in the rather clunky title of Essex Suffolk Norfolk Pylons. They say it is wrong for National Grid to be allowed to start spending millions of pounds on the project before the pylon route has even been granted planning permission.
Campaigner Rosie Pearson argues that the very process of holding a public consultation on the transmission line suggests that the company is jumping the gun. “To allow National Grid to spend …money before the project even has planning approval - it’s infuriating.”
“You should not be advancing money on a project that has not got approval - that is hugely risky.”
Concern has also been expressed for wildlife in the path of the development. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds suggests its opposition to electricity pylons is carefully targeted.
“We will only oppose new pylons and other electricity infrastructure if we believe the construction will cause irreversible harm to the natural environment or damage sites of high value for wildlife,“ says the RSPB. “In 2022 we successfully campaigned…for the National Grid not to route power lines through Hintlesham Woods, an ancient woodland in Suffolk, part of which is managed by the RSPB.”
“We also don’t agree with plans to tunnel new electricity cables under RSPB North Warren in Suffolk, as we believe that there are other, less damaging, options for locating the new infrastructure.”
I was doing a mental Cook’s tour of the UK, to cover areas where lines of pylons were in the offing, when I came across a detailed account of plans in Wales. Carmarthenshire was mentioned…and then, blow me down! Mid Wales, Powys and so on.
Hang on! You can’t put a row of huge pylons here! Near our sleepy town by the River Lugg! Holy mackerel! Why weren’t we consulted? A load of pylons would ruin the view! They would scar mid-Wales! It would be an outrage!
The body planning these pylons is Green Gen Cymru. I thought at first that this must be the Welsh equivalent of National Grid. But calling it green and giving it a Welsh name is not going to fool us. If we’re not careful these guys are going to walk all over us!
By talking of National Grid at all, it turns out that I am months out of date. Last year National Grid gave way to a body called the National Energy System Operator. This outfit is now in the driving seat, and may be about to allow a huge line of pylons to be erected, more or less in our back yard.
And if you live in Scotland don’t imagine you won’t be in the firing line. Indeed, Scotland has its own protest group who are also busy trying to resist the march of the pylons, north of the border.
In Aberdeenshire, objectors to a proposed 66 mile transmission line are fighting under the banner of Deeside Against Pylons. One of the group’s leaders, Eileen West, reckons local people are being “sacrificed” to make way for the power line.
A BBC News report says that if the line goes ahead, many of the pylons will be around 75 metres high. In old money that is the length, or height, of about 3 cricket pitches - around 180 feet. To me, that sounds huge. In saying that, am I becoming a Nimby? Sure! Please include me when you do the next roll call of Nimbies.
Am I losing my objectivity? Probably. In fact, I lost it twenty minutes ago! Just put me in a straight-jacket, and march me off to the press council.
