The Road Less Travelled
B
LOKES love to collect things. Train numbers, matchboxes, Rembrandts, beer labels, Elvis Presley records. In fact, any old shit you care to mention, there is probably a bloke somewhere collecting it. Do women collect stuff as well? I’m not sure, hang on, I’ll ask. Okay, she says, men have that sort of brain (waves hands about) and women have this sort of brain (waves arms about) and therefore, although women may have large collections of disparate things, they are unlikely to be collecting the number plates of all the buses on the 38 route to Balls Pond Road. I guess ‘cos I’m not a terribly ‘blokey’ bloke I’ve never really been that good at collecting sets of things. I mean, I did have a stamp collection but only because the boy next door’s dad worked for the Post Office. I did have a couple of really good books of cigarette cards depicting cars of the 1930’s but I messed them up by peeling out the ones I didn’t like. These days it’s true to say that I do have a lot (number undisclosed) of electric bikes, but they do not represent a collection anymore than Tranter’s Scrapyard is a motor museum. Incidentally, have you ever been to the Llangollen Motor Museum? It’s a delightfully dusty, random collection of bikes and cars in a shed about a mile out of town on the A452 on the other side of the river from the A5. Go have a look, it’s a hoot. Anyway, I digress, things are about to change as I have really got my teeth into this collecting business. I am collecting ‘The Road Less Travelled’. No, I’m not talking about M Scott Peck’s 10 million selling self-help book, I’m talking about the forgotten highways and byways of the Broad Sheep area. The first issue of Broad Sheep in December ‘92 defined the catchment area to be dictated by Presteigne’s location and how far your typical non-drinking chauffeur could reasonably be expected to drive on a wet Wednesday. Over the years it has ebbed and flowed, but these days is most of Herefordshire to a line from Bromyard to Ross. South Shropshire up as far as Church Stretton and a big chunk of Powys reaching to Brecon, Builth, Rhayader, Llanidloes and Newtown. After years of driving round the area delivering the magazine and quite often heading off down various little lanes just to see where they lead to, I think I know the area pretty well, but now I intend to push it to a whole new level. My self-imposed ‘blokey collector’ task is to cycle down every lane in the Broad Sheep area!
Any day when it’s not pissing with rain you can find me poring over O.S. maps 136, 137, 147, 148, 149, 160 and 161. Searching for the missing roads I have never travelled before setting off, after the school run at 3.30pm (when the lanes are full of SUV’s) either on the bike or in the car with the bike in the back (not very eco) to explore some teeny tarmac track. Those of you who read the editorials in the May and June Broad Sheep will already be aware of my cycling from pub to pub on the quietest roads possible, but this is different. In my quest to go down EVERY lane in the area, I am now prepared to even go down lanes that haven’t got a pub at the end! Email: info@broadsheep.com Website: www.broadsheep.com
Allow me to mention one of recent finds just so you don’t think I’m a complete bullshitter. Last night, for example, I was cycling from Painscastle to Glascwm, a route I know pretty well when I discovered that if you are coming from Hundred House to Glascwm, instead of following the road down into the valley you hang a left halfway, down there is another lane to Glascwm that runs parallel to the usual road. Judging from the grass down the middle and the general debris on the road, I’d say nobody has been down it since 1958 and the sheep were absolutely gobsmacked to see me. “Hey mate, what the hell do you think you’re doing? This is our road, nobody drives down here except Elwyn just before shearing!” So, if your domicile is on a very quiet lane in the Broad Sheep area and you have never seen me cycle by, then please email Broad Sheep and let me know where you live. Before I go, I must mention some upcoming gigs in Presteigne. During September three of my all-time favourite bands will be in town. September 1st is Truckstop Honeymoon with their brilliant witty songs at the Assembly Rooms with Little Rumba supporting. September 6th, it’s the fabulous piano player Dom Pipkin with his band the IKO’s at the brand new Community Barn in Went’s Meadow and then on September 28th it’s the very extraordinary Whiskey Moon Face at the Assembly Rooms. See, life’s not all bad.

Trigger Warning S
OME good news at last amid the encircling gloom. Since the scrapping of the Jeremy Kyle Show, the human lab animals of Love Island are to receive extra psychological support for any mental damage sustained while parading their lovely orange physiques and personal neuroses before an audience of millions. And the word is that with the compassionate focus on mental health that characterises the kindly government of B Johnson, this counselling and psychological support is to be extended to other forms of broadcasting quizzes, discussions, interviews, all that wounding and damaging stuff - and enshrined in law. Quizzes have long been a bit tough. Take University Challenge. Paxman: Your starter for ten. What is the name of the Prime Minister? Bzzzzt. Mystery voice: St Olaf’s, Hammerfest, Purvis. Purvis: Er.... Piers Morgan? Paxman (curls lip): Begone, oaf, to the Dungeons of the Ignorant, where I hope you can find a rat stupid enough to gnaw you. St Olaf’s Hammerfest, Purvis: (whimper) Under the new dispensation it will be different. The starter for ten will be the same, as will the ludicrous answer. Paxman, though, will issue a sugary smile, and say, ‘Jolly well done for finding the buzzer, Purvis. Now, a clue. Rhymes with Morris?’ Purvis: Horace? Paxman: Perhaps one day you will learn to tie your own shoelaces, whoops, jolly bad luck, over to St Dogbert’s Penzance? Purvis: Counsel me! (Stretcher-bearers arrive. Tranquillisers are injected, and Ofcom bans University Challenge for animal cruelty, transpotting, etc.) In time the consequences of reality TV psychotrauma will be felt far beyond mere quizzes. National frustration has long been building up against the Today programme on Radio 4. A sample from a recent John Humphries interview is a case in point. Humphries: So, Prime Minister, you are happy to take us out of the EU with No Deal? PM (for it is he): Spurble. Fiat lux. Look here John Humphries: Come on, come on, come on. PM: Arma virumque cano, jolly good Humphries: Answer the question, please. PM: Eheu fugaces, if you would just let me Humphries: Come on, come on, come on, etc etc etc etc. Under the new dispensation, it will be Humphries: So, Prime Minister, etc etc etc
6
PM: Spurble, fiat lux, of jolly course we jolly well will, a deal is a deal, brexit means exit, do or die, dicendum est quae sint duris agrestibus arma. Humphries: Thank you very much Prime Minister, I know the listeners will be much enlightened. But PM: Did you say ‘but’? Humphries: Only in passing. PM: Pater noster qui es in caelis, I am black affronted. Send for Ofcom, counselling (emits crocodile tears) you are so unfair. Humphries: Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. (But it is too late. He is sooooo suspended. Storm-troopers arrive, give injections all round, strap Humphries to plank and bear him away). The odds are that sooner or later this will boomerang. After all, political interviewers are human, and have feelings of their own, and should not be immune from trigger warnings. Imagine Foreign Secretary Raab on Today. Humphries: Well, Foreign Secretary, it is really a privilege to have you on the programme, and can you tell the listeners exactly how you plan to avert open conflict with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard? Raab (gnashing teeth): A typical squib from a tool of the Guardian-reading liberal establishment. We and our American friend Matthew Bolton will leave no stone unturned in scotching this wicked snake in its stable, and to suggest otherwise is pitiful weak-kneed Remoaner gobbledygook - hey! Who are these operatives in black? Humphries (through a mist of tears): It is Ofcom counsellors because you are being beastly to me and now they are going to give us both an injection. Raab: But democracy.... zzzzzzzz. The process is as inevitable as the following of night by day. There is only one hope. People watch Love Island and other programmes produced by prurient, greed-crazed hypocrites because audiences like seeing orange people being beastly to each other. If the shrinks get involved and everyone makes nice, the advertising revenue will plummet. So in the end we are safe, and so are Paxman, Humphries and what currently passes for democracy. Phew! cinema MARIANNE & LEONARD: WORDS OF LOVE (12A) You either love Leonard Cohen’s music or you don’t and after a brief flirtation with his gloomy bedsitter soundtrack in the late ‘60s (when of course I lived in a bedsit), I joined the latter camp. H o w e v e r I remained intrigued by his appeal to even quite musically discerning friends who also claimed to love his (gloomy) poetry and hoped this biopic by noted documentarian Nick Broomfield might illuminate my darkness. As per its title, it’s about the enduring relationship between Cohen and his lover/muse, the titular (So Long) Marianne Ihlen who became besotted with him when they lived on a wildly hedonistic Greek island. Amateur and news footage, interviews and photos do indeed reveal the true Cohen but as a hugely selfobsessed, depressive drug fiend with Ms. Ihlen his naïve accomplice and for all that it’s a riveting watch with a great soundtrack… if you’re a Cohen lover. Horror films rarely feature here, but young writer/director Ari Aster had form in expertly turning an initially mundane narrative into weird, ultimately frightening psycho-drama with HEREDITARY and now goes a stage further in this story of a somewhat mis-matched group of students persuaded to visit a summer festival in a remote, sunnily bucolic Swedish location. Nervous Dani (Florence Pugh, THE FALLING) and her ambivalent boyfriend, Christian (Jack Reynor, SING STREET) are initially beguiled by the friendly, LSD-enhanced atmosphere but gradually become aware that their generous Swedish hosts are in fact a bonkers cult with a very disturbing agenda from which it’s hard to escape. Aster’s cleverly grows the tensions and presents sudden, shocking outcomes entirely plausibly and the acting, especially by Pugh, Reynor and the often underrated Brit Will Poulter (the MAZE RUNNER franchise) is uniformly and expertly nuanced. 28 Sept FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS (12A) Chapel Lawn VH 01547 530258 28 Sept ALADDIN (2019) (PG) Shropshire Hills Discover Centre, Craven Arms, 01588 676060 29 Sept FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS (12A) New Inn, Pembridge 01544 387571 30 Sept GREEN BOOK (12A) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911

THE SISTERS BROTHERS (15) A western written and directed by a Frenchman is a rarity, but Jacques Audiard (RUST & BONE, A PROPHET) is a stellar craftsman clearly entranced by the oeuvre and approaches it with gusto. The eponymous siblings, played by John C. Reilly in perhaps his greatest role (notwithstanding WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN) and Joaquin Pheonix (his best outing since INHERENT VICE) are somewhat feral gunslingers hired by a businessman (Rutger Hauer) to dispose of a seemingly mildmannered Arabian prospector, Kermit Warm (Riz Ahmed) who stole from him. However Warm is protected by an eloquent lawyer (Jake Gyllenhall, Ahmed’s NIGHTCRAWLER co-star) and has a lucrative secret which the Sisters eventually realise will likely benefit them more than a dead man’s bounty. The plot and its resolution gives Audiard the opportunity to realise traditional western tropes, e.g. merciless shoot-outs, beautifully lensed landscapes, double-crossings, with a fresh eye and considerable humour.

The Pheasant at Neenton, Bridgnorth
O
LDER readers of Mr Pernickety’s monthly reviews of restaurants, pubs eateries and other face-stufferies will recall that thirty years ago the government with its fondness for market forces decided to react to public dissatisfaction with the way the major breweries owned and controlled a vast proportion of pubs in England and Wales. The most unfair aspect of this practice was deemed to be the beer tie, which forced their tenants to buy all their beers, spirits and mixers from the breweries. As a result of the Supply of Beer Orders in 1989, the national brewers had to sell off half their tied pubs in excess of 2,000 outlets, and thousands of pubs were brought up at knockdown wholesale prices by property speculators who simply turned themselves into multiple licensed premises owners. Known as Pubcos, like Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns, they quickly found new tenants or took on existing ones and immediately imposed their own beer tie, which, not being brewers, they were allowed to do. More recently here have been some positive developments in which new ways of acquiring and running pubs that have fallen victim to Pubco greed and mismanagement have emerged. One of these is the establishment of “community” pubs, usually in rural villages where associations of local residents or in some cases, parish councils, have been able to buy freeholds of former pubs and run them in the way that best suits local needs. A good example of a community-owned pub is The Pheasant at Neenton, a charming C18th inn which closed in 2006 until the villagers managed to acquire it nine years later, and made the best possible use of what was there with an entirely sympathetic restoration and the addition of a large oak framed ‘community’ room. Mr P arranged to eat lunch there with a friend, scion of an ancient family of Staffordshire pot-makers, who enjoys food and was more than happy to be Mr P’s guest. The Pheasant is an immediately attractive building from the outside, and doesn’t disappoint within. It has been decorated and furnished with an absolute understanding of how an English pub should be. Unusually, Mr P couldn’t fault it. The pub is run for the community by an outstandingly able couple. She does front of house; he does the cooking. The menu reflects an emerging distinctive English style which has so radically improved cuisine in this country over the last 20 years. With a genuine appreciation that the pub is an important local resource, there is food on offer that wouldn’t deter any local diner – properly made burgers, soup and sandwiches, alongside the chef’s own original creations and regular specials, often with a changing daily fish dish.
30
Mr P and his guest had a drink on the lawn while they looked at the menu, in Mr P’s case a very pleasing bitter from the Enville Brewery, whose product was new to him, although their website tells him they have been brewing since 1993. Sitting in the oak extension, Mr P’s guest started with Seared Harissa Chicken thigh with a saffron aioli, which Mr P tried and loved, while he happily gobbled up his Wild Mushroom, Garlic, White Wine Pea and Herb Tagliatelle. Mr P ordered a sirloin steak, which was succulent and flavoursome with a subtle dressing – faultless, really, with good handcut chips in their skins. He also drank a glass of Remi and Jerome’s merlot from the Pays d’Oc, not bad at a fiver a glass. Beyond the regular wine list there are always a few specials which though more expensive look interesting. The high standards in The Pheasant’s kitchen did not falter with Mr P’s guest’s Fillet of Haddock cooked in coriander, curry powder, garlic fennel and turmeric – clever, original and exceptionally good. He followed it with a board of four well-kept cheeses and, he said, a particularly good apple chutney. Mr P ended with a big smile on his face after a White Chocolate & Raspberry Brulée with home-made shortbread. The only aspects of their visit that he could find to criticise was an annoying selection of mundane music, which could easily be improved upon in a way which Mr P has frequently suggested, and too many .95p prices on the menu. Mr P continues to consider it an insult to a punter’s intelligence to imagine he or she doesn’t know that £14.95 is really £15. On the other hand, he heard no murmur of orders to ‘Enjoy!’ and was pleased by the excellent attentive helpful staff. It seems to Mr P that the community are lucky indeed to have such talented people running The Pheasant, who are able to cater for locals who have walked up and to food lovers who find it worth driving for over half an hour to get there. www.misterpernickety.com

Hay Jude T
HIS Autumn, Emma Daman, Bright Field on Friday 27 September, the inaugural edition of Bright Field launches in the globe in Hay-on-Wye, a night that will celebrate the start of each season in music and spoken word (full disclosure: I’m in charge of what we’ve called The Bright Field Organisation). It’s a night “from the borders and beyond”, which we mean in several ways: from the literal meeting points between England and Wales, and the fluid borders of genres, particularly between folk, psychedelia, experimental music, literature and poetry. I moved here three years ago being originally from South Wales, and I was struck by how exciting music and art is in this part of the world, plus how close our connection is to the land around us. We’ve named our night Bright Field after the poem by Welsh writer R.S Thomas, in which a man sees a field struck with light, and realises that possessing that moment of clarity is all that life is about. It’s a message that feels more relevant than ever in Autumn 2019. Our artwork, flyers and intentions are fittingly pagan and pastoral. At Bright Field, we will showcase fantastic local acts, as well as more mainstream names that are always trying out new things. Having been a Guardian music writer for 15 years, I’m lucky to have known Mercury Prize-nominated folk musician Sam Lee for ten of them. Recently in the top 20 with the RSPB’s single of birdsong, Let Nature Sing, Sam also happens to be from Craswall in Herefordshire, and this is his first ever time playing at his teenage hangout, The Globe. Emma Daman of psychedelic band Islet lives and works in Powys, as does Faber author Richard King, author of The Lark Ascending, about music and landscape. Tickets are available now (see the link at the bottom of the column). Bright Field is supported by Night Out/Arts Council Wales.

I’ve been impressed in recent years with how fertile the folk scene is in this part of the world. I started going to the Weirdshire nights in Hereford’s Babar Café this Spring, a fantastic place for all kinds of progressive music (indeed, DJs Sproatly Smith and Jus’ Jay will be playing their brilliant mixes of seasonal songs at Bright Field). The Weirdshire atmosphere is always friendly and encouraging, and the bands always great. The Diamond Family Archive will be playing on Thursday 5th September and Ian A. Anderson will be playing on Sunday 22nd September at 5pm.
A bigger folk affair will be the Bromyard Folk Festival, which now offers over 170 hours of entertainment in one weekend (if you can stay up, plus clone yourself for all of it). Kathryn Tickell with her new band The Darkening looks like one of the highlights to me, plus the hugely talented singer/melodeon and concertina-player Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne plays twice, both solo and with his BBC Young Folk Award-nominated trio, Granny’s Attic. I’d also not miss Edgelarks (Hannah Martin’s low, bruised voice is a like a traditional take on Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn), or the brilliant Jackie Oates playing with John Spiers from Bellowhead. Builth Wells folk-lovers can also catch Spiers’ bandmate, Jon Boden, playing solo at the Wyeside Arts Centre this month. Outside folk, The Fitzwilliam @ Hay throws up some fascinating-sounding shows. On Saturday 28th, there’s music by 19th century Georgian composer Borodin and Hungarian composer Dohnanyi, while Sunday’s show sees Maryleen Schiltkamp paint on stage while the Fitzwilliam String Quartet plays Shostakovitch. Similar arty delights will be at Theatr Hafren in Newtown on 22nd, when The BBC National Orchestra of Wales play a brilliant gig for all ages. Their programme includes Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Britten’s Young Person’s Guide To The Orchestra, Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending and John Williams’ music for Star Wars, while author James Mayhew (Katie and Ella Ballerina) will be creating pictures along to the music. Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn has some big names stopping by too, including soulful ‘80s band The Christians, and original cast members from The Commitments (in The Stars From The Commitments). Monmouth’s Savoy Theatre also hosts an intimate gig for ‘60s icon Andy Fairweather Lowe, while Abergavenny’s lovely King’s Head pub and Melville Theatre hosts the Wall2Wall Jazz Festival, with performances from Tango Jazz, Renewal Choir and Claire Victoria Duo. On another jazz tip, the Queen’s Head in Monmouth continues to run a lively and varied monthly programme: Celtic jazz/folk act Barum play this month. It’s hard to know which doors to darken as the nights drawn in. Autumn is starting very brightly indeed. Jude Rogers Guardian journalist Jude Rogers runs the quarterly Bright Field nights in Hay-on-Wye’s The Globe, beginning on Friday 27 September. Tickets are available from https:// www.ticketsource.co.uk/the-bright-field-organisation Katherine Tickell & The Darkening, Bromyard Folk Festival

grass roots To Beat Global Warming, Just Plant Trees! Maybe...
W
E can all stop worrying about global heating! A solution is just out there. In the garden. Or the park. Or maybe a bit further - in a bit of open space somewhere. This is the implication of study carried out by an academic unit called ETH Zurich – the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. A press release from the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich suggests that all we need to do is cover almost one billion available hectares with forest - and the trees will do the rest. This reforestation “could ultimately capture two thirds of human-made carbon emissions”. And they are not just talking about the annual output of greenhouse gas emissions. They are saying this extent of forest - roughly the size of the USA - could store about two thirds of the 300 billion tonnes of the greenhouse gases that have been pumped into the atmosphere since start of the industrial revolution! The founder of the Crowther Lab is Professor Thomas Crowther and he is also a co-author of this study. I will confess that in quite a few years of reading up on climate change, I do not recall coming across his name or that of ETH Zurich. No matter - it is a big subject and there is always more to learn. One environment writer, the Guardian’s usually calm and dispassionate Damian Carrington, was clearly excited by the Zurich study. His article was headed – “Tree planting “has mind-blowing potential” to tackle climate crisis.” Reading the Guardian piece, one learned that the scientist who found the prospect “mind-blowing” was not a peer reviewer, but Professor Thomas Crowther himself, a participant in the study. He was quoted as saying that this gigantic forestation idea was “overwhelmingly more powerful than all the other climate change solutions proposed.” What – even more powerful than calling a halt to burning coal or gas? Wow! That must really be something! However, not all climate scientists found their minds had been blown. One expert still in possession of his faculties was Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. He wrote, “…to be able Stefan Rahmstorf, to compensate for Potsdam Institute the consequences of more than two centuries of industrial development with such a simple… measure – that sounds like a dream!”
62
But, he soon concluded, a dream is just what it is. One problem is that much of the land identified in the study as suitable for forestation is in cold
regions of the northern hemisphere such as Alaska, Canada, and Siberia. The snow and ice in these areas reflect a lot of sunlight back into space. If you cover the white blanket with dark evergreen trees, you will hugely increase absorption of solar radiation and thereby speed up global warming instead of reducing it. Nearly twenty years ago, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change investigated how much carbon dioxide could be removed from the atmosphere by treeplanting. It concluded that 1.6 gigatonnes, or less, of atmospheric CO2 could be sequestrated in this way. In 2015 an Oxford University team gave a very similar figure – from 1 to 3 gigatonnes. If, like me, you struggle with gigatonnes, all you need to know is that total worldwide greenhouse gas emissions are a bit over 49 gigatonnes per annum. So not even a crash programme of forestry can come close to meeting the challenge. In 2012, when Dr Charles Palmer, of the Grantham Research Institute at the LSE, looked at the prospects for forestation as a way of curbing climate change, he found the outlook less than promising. He pointed out that the trees must be protected from fire, drought, pests and diseases. And some tree-planting schemes turned out to be unviable because of the costs involved. More recently, in 2017, the Grantham Research Institute judged that the amount of carbon sequestered by forestry schemes has been “almost negligible”. Writing in Anthropocene magazine, a science journalist based in Seattle, Sarah DeWeerdt, has summed up the situation with a brutal clarity I can’t improve on. “The sheer scale of biomass plantations that would be required to…mitigate our carbon dioxide emissions is mind boggling, and likely to involve unbearable human or environmental costs.” DeWeerdt points out that the water required to grow the trees would also place grave demands on an already water-scarce world. “We can’t plant our way out of climate change,” she says. “The only way to avoid disaster is to cut our carbon dioxide emissions – much faster and more deeply than we’ve managed to wrap our heads around so far.” Julian O’Halloran
