‘VE been really good up to now, I’ve barely mentioned Nelly the elephant in the room ‘Off she went with a trumpety trump etc’. That doesn’t mean I don’t agree that’s he’s stupid and dangerous. It just seems so obvious that there’s not much point in me chipping in with my five cents worth. However, it is now time for me to confess my new addiction to U.S. news channels. I am convinced that very soon the Trump White House is going to, metaphorically, explode in flames and come crashing to earth. Now whether this is a genuine premonition or just a bit of hopeful wish fulfilment I’m not sure. Anyway, Karma dictates that because of his campaign chants ‘Lock her up. Lock her up’, Donald will eventually get escorted to a cop car in cuffs. I’m so sure this is going to happen I’m hooked on watching CNN so that I can be viewing American news at the actual moment it occurs. I’m like all those people on the motorway who slow down in the opposite lane to look at the accident, only I’m actually cruising tirelessly up and down the M42 waiting. It’s stupid really, there is plenty of dodgy politics going on in Britain that I should be worrying about, but unfortunately the American narrative is so biblically insane I can’t take my eyes off it. I am always preaching about not letting America culture rule our lives and moaning about the all pervading influence of American pop music so you think I’d know better. But that doesn’t mean of course that I’m going to let the death of Chuck Berry pass without some comment. It will be interesting to see if the next few months we get a revival of interest in Chuck’s life and music as we did for Leonard Cohen, Prince and David Bowie. Chuck’s life and music consisted of an awful lot of jail time for a variety of misdemeanours and 10 years of sublime pop songs between 1955 and 1965, followed by 50 years of treating his audience and musicians like shit, with an endless series of badly rehearsed gigs with bands that he couldn’t even be bothered to tell what song he was playing or what key it was in, plus of course the horrendous ‘My Ding a Ling’. But that being said he was the real spark that lit the fire of the British R & B boom, even more than Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker and the rest. Plus he wrote some truly sublime songs. One of my favourites is Too Much Monkey Business written in 1956 Runnin’ to and fro, hard workin’ at the mill Blonde haired, good lookin’ tryin’ to get me Never failed in the mail, yet come a rotten hooked bill Wants me to marry, get a home, settle Too much monkey business, too much down, write a book monkey business Ha, too much monkey business, too much Too much monkey business for me to be monkey business involved in Too much monkey business for me to be involved in Salesman talking to me tryin’ to run me Pay phone, somethin’ wrong, dime gone, up a creek will mail Says you can buy it, go on try it, you can I ought to sue the operator for tellin’ me a pay me next week tale Ah, too much monkey business, too much Ah, too much monkey business, too much monkey business monkey business Too much monkey business for me to be Too much monkey business for me to be involved in involved in I been to Yokohama, been a fightin’ in the war Army bunk, army chow, army clothes, army car Ha, too much monkey business, too much monkey business Too much monkey business for me to be involved in Workin’ in the fillin’ station, too many tasks Wipe the windows, check the tires, check the oil, dollar gas Uh-uh, too much monkey business, too much monkey business I don’t want your botheration, go away, leave me be

Mano a mano with the White Bull I

T is a bastard, being a writer. There is the constant adulation, for one thing, the long, long lunches with film stars of all genders, the living hell of tall cocktails on the private jets facilitating one’s tripettes to Hollywood. But this is the least of it. Every day, the writer, unless he or she or it has reached the stage where someone else does the writing - think James Patterson - is confronted with a blank sheet of paper, on which stuff needs to be put. Ernest Hemingway called it the White Bull, and fought it bravely with his biro, often inspired by lashings of alcohol, game fishing, etc. Many writers, not wanting to fight bulls of any colour and not very keen on fishing, have turned vegan. Even this is no good. But help is at hand, hooray. Until now many of us have apparently been writing in Moleskine notebooks, whose creamy paper gives the nib an easy ride across the page, and whose mooing and bellowing is less like a bull’s than a sucking dove’s. The Moleskine era, however, may now be over. Ian Marchant, Presteigne’s own word guru and compere of the excellent Velvet Violin evenings, has drawn the world’s attention to his discovery of Leuchtturm1917. This is a thing that looks like a notebook. Appearances can, however, be deceptive. According to the puffery, this far from humble object is infinitely more than a thing for writing stuff in. It ‘has pretty great details that make it a prime choice for Bullet Journal purposes’. Bullet Journaling, in case you did not know, is ‘the interface between mindfulness and productivity’. Whatever the greasy fuck that means (I think it is what was once called ‘making lists’). Let us delve further into the philosophical underpinning of this mighty system. ‘”Change is the only constant in life.” - Heraclitus,’ says the Bullet Journaling website, which, astonishingly, appears to be run by Leichtturm’s PR team. ‘This truth is a foundational principle for Bullet Journaling as a practice. Practice?

Yes, Bullet Journaling is just as much a mindfulness practice as it is a productivity system.’

Jesus.

In my time I have written a lot of stuff in old exercise books and Moleskine notebooks and on the flyleaves of James Patterson novels (q.v.).There were also the backs of bus tickets in the days when there were still bus tickets. I expect some of these scrivenings (Golden Virginia. Whisky. See if any onion setts left. Worm cat) existed on the karmically humming frontier between mindfulness and total drivel. Perhaps the reason I did not cross this frontier and penetrate a universe of absolute truth was that I was not worthy. Either that, or it did not exist until some paper merchants dreamed it up. Anyway, fellow writers, there you have it. Life is going to be so much easier now. Brass up between ten and fifteen quid for your book of blank paper. Seat yourself in front of it. Arrange nib of Mont Blanc fountain pen to your liking. Change colour of ink. Decide you do not like colour of notebook and buy another two in different shades of blue, or perhaps pink would be nicer. Remember fridge needs defrosting and it is ages since you put any lard on the cat’s boil. Cope with fridge and boil. Return to desk, where the page is still blank, which is not amazing, because you have not yet got round to actually writing anything on it. Write Bullet Journal as follows: eat lunch, go for walk, think about life, have tea. Tear out page and burn. There are no more distractions. You are mano a mano with the White Bull. Except it is not white, more cream, really, and, well, is it a bull? Yes it damn well is. Because only a bull could be surrounded by this much bullshit. Throw the thing away, and the Mont Blanc after it. Pick up biro and attack A4 pad. Onward! Damian Grubb-Street

ON THE ESTABLISHMENT AND AVIAN FLU 35 million game birds are bred to be shot annually. 100,000 shot each day of the shooting season. Most dumped, not eaten. Estimated 1.7 million animals killed legally by snares on shooting estates each year. Birds of prey poisoned and shot by licence. During the Avian Flu outbreak, poultry keepers have been required to keep their birds away from wild birds. Game birds are classed as wild once released. Thus, once free are not the responsibility of the owner/keeper. Shooting and releasing birds has not been restricted during the Avian Flu outbreak. 1/3 of all Avian Flu cases has been in pheasants and game birds. cinema GHOST IN THE SHELL (15) Following Under The Skin and Lucy, Scarlett Johansson returns to sci-fi thrillerdom as The Major, an advanced humanoid heading a specialist counter cyber-terrorism unit. It’s actually a live-action sequel to several animated versions of a vastly popular anime series and essentially follows The Major’s coldly determined efforts to wipe out cybercrime in a futuristic Hong Kong. En route there’s a hint of lesbian lust and a lot of seat-edging menace and director Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman) has wisely conscripted a fine cast familiar to westerners to portray this very Japanese storyline, including Juliette Binoche, Michael Wincott and Danish actor Pilou Asbæk (A Highjacking, and Johansson’s Lucy co-star in). But in a performance as riveting as anything she’s done, it’s very much Johansson’s film. All reviews by Mark Williams

ELLE (18) It starts with a brutal rape – or is it? – and develops into a complex, darkly comical thesis on the ambiguity of female sexuality, but considering its inherent paradoxes, Elle showcases Isabel Huppert’s supreme ability to make her characters both contradictory and identifiable. Huppert plays Michèle, the boss of a lurid video games company who minutes after the shocking opening scene, clears up the mess and blithely orders dinner. But thus victimised, she seeks revenge on her attacker whilst juggling several very disparate relations with men, including a feckless son, her best friend’s cheating husband and her monstrous father. Ranging from Basic Instinct to Starship Troopers, director Paul Verhoeven’s C.V. is as confusing as Michèle’s morality, but alongside writer David Birke he keeps his audience both guessing and guilefully entertained. 19 April THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS (12A) Escleyside Hall 01981 510696 20 April SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS (2016) (PG) Pudleston VH 01568 760606 20 April QUEEN OF KATWE (PG) Gorsley VH 01989 720358 20 April A STREET CAT NAMED BOB (12A) Kinnerley Parish Hall 01691 682282

HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Without three gifted female mathematicians, America might not have successfully put their first man into space in 1961, that they were also black in a country where racial segregation still had a sour normalcy gives this fact-based thriller added piquancy. Played with great, often wry gusto by Taraji P. Henson (The Karate Kid), Octavia Spencer (Fruitvale Station) and popstar Janelle Monáe, the trio are plucked from numeric drudgery by NASA systems boss (Kevin Costner, excellent) to help meet deadlines accelerated by presidential decree – an ironic twist given Costner’s 1991 performance as JFK. As well as an onerous timetable, the women face the routine prejudice of their work colleagues but director/co-writer Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent) deftly avoids clichéd melodrama and cinematographer Mandy Walker (Tracks) aids the film’s persuasive period tone by shooting on film. 21 April OUR LITTLE SISTER (PG) Colwall VH 01684 540926 21 April BELLE (12A) Sarn VH 01686 671205 21 April PRECIOUS BANE (U) Shifnal VH 01952 462787 21 April THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN 2016) (15) Dorstone VH 01981 550943 22 April THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS (12A) Ryton VH 01743 718237 22 April BRIDGE OF SPIES (12A) Cleobury Mortimer Parish Hall 22 April SULLY: MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON (12A) Everest Hall, Llanfair Waterdine 01547 510672 22 April SULLY: MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON (12A) Belmont Hall, Wellington www.theclifton.org 22 April A STREET CAT NAMED BOB (12A) Clifton on Teme VH 01886 812238 22 April A STREET CAT NAMED BOB (12A) Lady Emily Hall, Tarrington 01432 890720 22 April A UNITED KINGDOM (12A) Chapel Lawn VH 01547 530258 25 April A UNITED KINGDOM (12A) Garway VH 01600 750465 25 April INFERNO (12A) Loppington VH 01939 236240 27 April THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS (12A) Bagley Sports and Social Club 07773 983963 27 April I, DANIEL BLAKE (15) Castlemorton Parish Hall 01684 833549

T

HE B4368 is one of Mr Pernickety’s favourite Shropshire roads; it runs north-east up the Corvedale, where a traveller may gently glide through the valley with Wenlock Edge undulating gracefully on the left. Sometimes, on a trip from Ludlow to Much Wenlock, Mr P finds himself transported back to a distant, lawless past, when friends would engage in ‘Pub Crawls’ - an activity now so socially unacceptable that he can’t imagine his own issue or their friends doing anything as crass. Back then, when normal life was politically incorrect, the temptation to drive a car with half a barrel of rustic ale sloshing around inside the guts could be hard to resist; Mr P does admit that in a more unruly period of his own youth, he too had been tempted. He wasn’t, at the time, familiar with the B4368 but had he come across it, he would immediately have recognised the possibilities of a string of enchanting battered old boozers in ancient villages every few miles along the way. It could have been designed specifically with this traditional activity in mind. A determined punter could have started at The Clive on the A49, although that establishment has been remodelled so many times over the last few decades that it scarcely counts as a pub any more. A more authentic starting point might be the former village shop at Onibury, which has functioned for many years as a purveyor of genuine beers, under the sign of The Apple Tree.

24

The next pub on the route is the Sun at Corfton, an enjoyably decrepit little place imbued with the aroma of unsophisticated cuisine, confirmed by a cluster of brightly-hued plastic sauce bottles on each table. It is, perhaps, best known for brewing and serving its own undistinguished beers, which appear never to have troubled the judges in any of the numerous competitions that are staged within the Real Ale community. Mr P, with his Lovely Companion and Mr and Mrs Zim, old friends of discerning and critical demeanour, dropped in for a brief session to determine whether or not the beer was as regrettable as reputed. The women of the party were having none of this; they felt that white wine and fizzy bottled water was the safest option, while Mr P and Mr Zim ordered half a pint each. Mr P, taking a Sunday break from a week of Lenten abstinence, chose Fuggles Gold (strap line: “It’s fuggling delicious!”) flavoured with that famous aromatic English hop while his fellow taster, a former lawyer with a strong sense of fairness, opted for Dark & Delicious - a murky, malty porter-style ale. Mr P, who is known to relish the opportunity to point out flaws in food and drink, was disappointed when he and his companion started tentatively to sip their choices. While the Fuggles Gold had acquired somewhere in the brewing process a sourness which warned Mr P it was not to be drunk in quantity, it did have a pleasing, strong Fuggles flavour, and his friend was almost complimentary about his dusky brew, although they agreed they wouldn’t go back for more. In any case they had a table booked for lunch elsewhere. Carrying on up the dale, they resisted the siren call of the The Swan, charming

old ale and eating house at Aston Munslow, where Mr P has enjoyed well-kept Hobsons while listening to local drinkers swapping tractor dramas, and drew up in the next village outside The Crown at Munslow. Mr P has been passing this attractive former hundred house for many years, without ever stopping to examine it. His youngest son had dined there a couple of years ago and returned full of praise. Others had spoken enthusiastically; set in a beautiful valley beneath Houseman’s blue remembered hills, Mr Pernickety was conscious that he had been neglecting his duty in not assessing it sooner for the readers of the Woolly Organ. Mr P’s party of four discerning, not to say, fussy eaters entered a main open bar that immediately pleased. Ancient, of course, and constructed of lovely old grey-brown stone with immense gnarled beams close above their heads and flagstones underfoot, the place was warmed by large, blazing wood-burners. To dispel the still lingering sourness of the Fuggles Gold, Mr P proposed a preprandial glass of fino, but only sweet Sherries were on offer. Instead, Mr P’s friends who have latterly lived in Spain and are aficionados of the Spanish grape, had noticed a special promotion for a wine, Paso Primero, produced in Spain by some people from Shrewsbury. They ordered a bottle of the white, made from the verdejo grape - not bad, but thin and without much edge to it. Mr P’s party were placed at a table in a raised section of the rambling bar, well pleased with the surroundings and accoutrements. The menu, mercifully clear, free of extravagant cliché, and concocted by Richard Arnold (chef-proprietor since the early millennium) promised well. Home-made bread and grissini appeared with garlic butter, mashed tomato and an exceptional olive tapenade. Mr P’s starter was a Prawn, Lemon and Chive Risotto - a sensible small serving, light and unsticky, deliciously balanced. He also had a forkful of Mr Zim’s Blue Cheese Ceamed Oyster and Button Mushrooms, Chorizo Crumble and Red Wine Syrup - an absolute delight. Mrs Zim ate a chicken parfait, which she said was light and creamy, not cloying; her only complaint was that it was served on a slab of slate - a pretension which didn’t seem to chime with the ethos of the place. The LC, having resisted a starter joined Mr P in Roast

Loin of Pork for a main course. With perfect crackling, the meat was moist and achieved the delicate balance between being too pink and too dry. Cranberry and thyme stuffing was super, along with perfect gravy (and more in a boat on the table). The only superfluity, Mr P felt, was the Yorkshire pudding - though he ate it all the same (while the LC, whose will is steelier, did not). Mr Zim had the most interesting-looking dish, billed as Our Own Smoked Chicken, Dauphinoise Potato, Chorizo Sauce and Romesco Salsa, which put a smile on his stern lawyer’s visage. His only very mild criticism was that the strong Chorizo somewhat overpowered the chicken. Mr P will certainly have it if it’s on the menu next time he eats at The Crown. Mrs Zim was delighted with her Griddled Seabass, Mussell Chowder and Tapenade Croute. All this was accompanied by a bottle of the Shrewsbury/Spanish Paso Primero Tinto, from a blend of Cab Sauv, Merlot and Tempranillo grapes. This was more characterful than the white, and Mr P’s party agreed that, as it can be got at Tanners, they would try it at home. Everyone loved the puddings they had chosen to follow. Mr P was especially delighted with his Star Anise Panna Cotta and Rhubarb Three Ways. The party left well content after a balanced and outstandingly well-cooked luncheon at a justifiable £35 a head, with Mr P regretting only that it had taken him so long to visit The Crown. Mr P’s Rating: Top Notch.
