ICOLA Humphreys died on January 5th at her home, Ivy House in Presteigne and the town seems a strange and empty place without her. She started this magazine with me in November ‘92 and over the course of the next 10 years, fuelled by PG tips and Old Holborn, turned it from a single page, typed and prit-sticked A4 info sheet into a 50 page magazine. Along the way she taught herself computer skills wrestled with Microsoft, learned Publisher then InDesign and Photoshop whilst dragging me along in her wake. We are all of us a mess of contradictions but Nicola had it in spades. From Aberdovey to Amsterdam and Barcelona to Bejing Nicola was an inveterate traveller but then she was quite happy sat in front of the Rayburn with the racing or tennis on the telly. A committed We take no responsibility socialist she also had a share in a stable of racehorses. She loved live theatre, everything for the veracity of the from the National to the Presteigne pantomime but she didn’t like films. She loved music information herein and she played the accordion and the cello but hated recording and rather disapproved of performing considering it to be showing off. She loved to play poker, drink, hang out in bars but at the same time she was an academic with a fierce intelligence who had studied Pete Mustill Mayfield, Stapleton, plant genetics. Nr Presteigne, Powys Scuba diving, waitressing, town councillor, a gardener with her own nursery. There was LD8 2LW not much she couldn’t turn her hand to except suffering fools gladly or cleaning the house! Tel: 01544 260051 Here are a couple of my favourite drawings of her by Sarah and Will and a pic of her playing Email: info@broadsheep.com in The Tango Band. She leaves behind an awful lot of very sad friends. Website: www.broadsheep.com There will be a Memorial service at St Michaels Church, Knill on Saturday February 4 at 3pm.

AM moving towards the desk with a cup of tea. The computer is on. I hit some key or other and it lights up. We’ve got one more quail away. We’ve got the eggs on and the legs on. I have got this terrific idea for a short story, though it is somehow hard to concentrate because of the things the computer keeps telling me Pierpaolo Piccioli has made a studded pump the it shoe. The story is about a woman who teaches herself how to do headstands. She watches herself doing headstands in the mirror and realises that doing headstands is the most delightful thing, and that the world will share her delight. Stop Cruelty in EU Quail Farming. So that day at the gym she does a really good one and the other women in the gym all say it is a really good one kittens are sent to dream boxes to die. When she goes home to lunch she does another. That afternoon she has a nap and does two more their decision to select PRONAUTAS was based on its “total piece of mind” tailor-made approach. She tries to drink a cup of tea standing on her head but it is not a success. That evening she goes out to supper with some influential friends of whom she is frankly rather frightened playing on their expectations right from the word getgo, but one of them might give her an excellent new job the Japanese art of gluing coloured woods and cutting it into thin sheets. So just after the soup (Jerusalem artichoke) and

before the quark bake, to put everyone at ease she finds an open patch of floor let’s change the law to prevent the sale of sick kittens in Australia. There is joy in her heart as she places the cushion, though she notices that people are looking at her in a way she cannot construe as encouraging; gutted down to the studs, the cozy kitchen was renovated with a tiled back splash. They will see, she thinks, and be amazed. And she stands on her head, and lets her legs down again, slowly, gently, feet together until her toes touch the floor I hope the parsnip puree can carry this through. At the last minute she bends her knees, assumes a kneeling position and climbs to her feet. ‘Hoppla!’ she cries every minute detail of George’s quail cookery must pass David’s scrutiny. But she can tell from the cold gaze of the people round the table that it has not really been a success what if YOUR chosen contraception was no longer available? and suddenly she feels deeply, deeply ashamed, though somewhere far inside her she knows she has no need to. There’s an island in Australia where a pair of dogs guard a tiny penguin. She has done her best, but they have done their worst; and they have won, the trivial bastards, they have won. The trivial bloody world has won there’s nothing more incredible than your maine coon. Sam

cinema ACTING UP This month I’m breaking with tradition – such as it is – by lumping together three films with arguably little in common, one of which you might only see if you forsake the indie cinemas Broad Sheep strives to support and skulk off to a multiplex in Hereford or Shrewsbury. And I’ll start with the chance meeting between MANCHESTER BY THE SEA’s main protagonist, the damaged, displaced Boston janitor Lee (Casey Affleck in a career-best performance) and his ex-wife, Randi (the peerless Michelle Williams) which I believe will go down as one of the truly great movie moments. I watched it in a small screening room with a dozen hardened cinema executives and the sound of sniffling following this emotionally-loaded but hesitantly articulated exchange was palpable and yet which in all the film’s justifiably flattering reviews, was barely mentioned. Why I do so is because Affleck and Williams’ performances exemplify the sort of complex, subtle characterisations rarely seen in a medium increasingly dominated by special effects, rapid-fire editing and scripts crudely calculated to generate simplistic reactions. Which brings me to 20th CENTURY WOMEN, a superficially convoluted account of Dorothea (Annette Bening), a 50-something divorcee and her truculent son who run a scruffy boarding house in 1970s Santa Barbara through which two young women (Greta Gerwig, for once not irritating) and Dakota Fanning (for once not playing cute) and a laid-back handyman (the ever-underrated Billy Crudup) weave in and out. There’s not much plot here, but once again the nuance the actors bring to their portrayals is a feast for our intellectual and emotional sensibilities with Bening, in a performance equaling her Oscar-nominated turns in AMERICAN BEAUTY and THE GRIFTERS, bringing radiant life and wry humour to the complexities of a world-hardened but still optimistic mother. So obviously I’m talking about great acting here, and my final pick this month is one you’re only likely to see at an Odeon or Cineworld, THE FOUNDER. And following BIRDMAN and SPOTLIGHT, Michael Keaton’s revitalised star continues its assured ascent with his guilefully executed study of Ray Kroc, the entrepreneur who put the ‘fast’ into ‘fast food.’ But this rambunctious movie avers that Kroc didn’t actually invent the Big Mac, but spotted the clever but cautious McDonald brothers’ successful San Bernadino burger operation and gradually, cunningly took over their business. Keaton’s combination of conflicted morality and brazen opportunism is fascinating to observe, as indeed is luminous U.S. tv actress Linda Cardellini playing the wife he steals from a business partner, but thanks to Keaton’s souped-up, twinkly-eyed turn, you can’t help loving Mr Kroc. And can’t help feeling confident that with films like these, movie acting can truly exceed expectations. Mark Williams

O
N a weekday winter’s evening, Mr Pernickety strolls through Hereford’s ‘Old Market Shopping Mall’, a dreary, characterless agglomeration of multiple Retail Outlets (or Shops, as they were once called) and vacuous corporate eateries such as you see in every anonymous high street in Britain. His heart bleeds – not for the first time – for the knackered innards of an old city that’s been stabbed in the heart by the insensitive greed of the businessmen, property merchants, lawyers and masons responsible for creating this rogue, white elephant on its fringe. The big puzzle is not how were they were allowed to do this (for they just gave themselves permission) but how all these huge, colourless branded chains were persuaded that they could open profitably, all side by side in a bleak west-midlands wind tunnel. The roll-call of mundane, ubiquitous restaurants – Nandos, Waggamama, Prezzo, Zizzi, Franklie & Benny’s, all the same from Cwmbran to Aberdeen – makes Mr P want to cry with frustration. At least, he observes in a glow of schadenfreude, they are all empty, even at prime time 7:30 and close by the six screens at the new Odeon, offering its own in-house range of arseenlarging, heart-attacking, mind-destroying concoctions of fat, sugar and gluten. Mr P and his always Lovely Companion will be checking in their later – not for face-stuffing purposes but for what they hope will be a quick douching of Hollywood musical romance, in La La Land. First, though, they must eat and Lo! the last restaurant on the ugly block is overflowing with punters queuing to get in. Not only is it not a member of a bloodless chain, it is an independent, sole representative of the aspiration of a group of Herefordshire men – lads, even, at a pinch; four chums who have run hip-hop clubs and gigs, pop-up eateries and rare-breed piggeries and competed together to win trophies in the United States for their version of what a hamburger should be. At the start of last year they set up their own first permanent restaurant, which looks as if it’s doing more business than all the six hideous multiples alongside it put together. How heartening is that?

Having heard that The Beefy Boys and their unsubtly named “Meat Boutique” were due an objective appraisal, Mr P took the opportunity of an infrequent visit to the benighted city. The Yoof of Hereford don’t know how lucky they are. When Mr Pernickety first went out for a burger, in his 15th year, the nearest purveyor of this innovative foodstuff was a Wimpy Bar in Peascod Street Windsor, where small dense discs of compacted, overcooked mince were served in bland soft white buns, with a large squishy plastic tomato to bring it back to life, while a young slippery-quiffed Cliff could be summoned up on a scratchy-screened film juke-box to be seen urging his eager fans to Put On their Dancing Shoes. Perched on cantilever school stacking chairs c.1960 at scaffold board tables in the Meat Boutique, among mostly monochrome hoody wearers interspersed with a few more colourful art students, while the music was loud enough, but no so Mr P couldn’t hear the soft thoughtful observations of his Lovely Companion, Mr P and the LC ordered beer (an excellent “1985 Lager” from the Wye Valley brewery for Mr P) and burgers. The LC (an aficionado of hot Latino street food in Southern California, where, bizarrely, she was a museum curator for several years) chose a burger called Rude Boy, described as “Fire Roasted Green Chilli Salsa, Jack Cheese, Bacon, Lettuce, Onion and Tomato, served with a Jalapeño popper on top!” Rude enough, but just one bite of her Jalapeño had the LC grinning happily, and urging Mr P to try it too. Mr P meanwhile had ordered a Jurassic Classic Nozboy, consisting of Honey Mustard Mayo, Ketchup, Spinach, an Egg over easy, American Cheese, Swiss Cheese and Bacon, all in a perfect Peter Cook bun. It turned out to be a Dream Burger, and excited Mr P almost as much as the sensational food to be had at the Crouch brothers in CSONS in Shrewsbury. It all goes to show what a group of young guys in touch with their punters can do, even in a graveyard like the Hereford Old Market Shopping Mall. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots A Trail in the Making S
IR Percival was one of the legendary knights of the round table. Even though he was born to noble blood, most of his family had died from ‘knightly misadventures,’ so his mother took him away as a small child and raised him deep in the forests of Wales in a very simple, down to earth sort of way. On the eve of Percival’s 16th birthday, a group of knight’s rode by and in that instant, Percival was ‘seized by desire’ to become a knight and go questing. His mother reluctantly agreed. So Percival went off to train as a knight. He was a marvelous horse rider and hunter and yet lacked a certain noble etiquette. The thing that really annoyed other knights was his tendency to ask questions. They made it clear that if Percival wanted to succeed he would have to respect highly ranked knights and not question them or their judgment. Time passed and at last, on a fine morning, the knighted Sir Percival set off from Wales on his first quest and found himself at a castle moat. Here he found the maimed Fisher King, who was fishing from a small boat. All around the king was wasteland - bare and barren and even his favourite pastime of fishing was pointless, because all the fish were gone. Sir Percival was invited to stay at the king’s castle. There was a feast and merriment and he longed to ask the King “What ails thee?” but he knew that he shouldn’t ask questions. When he awoke the next day the land, the castle and everyone at the castle had disappeared. Opportunity missed. Such is the nature of questing. Attached to the story is the idea that a ‘king’ is so tied to the land that when he falls ill, the land itself
falls ill as well. The question “what ails thee?” remains unanswered to this day, which just goes to show that you should question things – and also go walking or questing beyond the barriers that divide society from the land. Somewhere between the two, Arriva Trains Wales recently funded a study for a walking trail, weaving between stations along the Heart of Wales Line. The study was carried out by Professor Les Lumsdon and Alison Caffyn, working closely with local walking groups. They came up with a fantastic long distance route - that starts (or finishes) in the old railway town of Craven Arms, passing through stunning countryside and intersecting walks that include the Shropshire Way, Offa’s Dyke Path and Beacons Way. The trail finishes (or begins) at Llanelli with a final stretch alongside the estuarial saltmarshes of the Loughor Valley, en-route to the Millennium Coastal Park. The trail steering group are working with Rights of Way teams across Powys, Carmarthenshire, Shropshire and Swansea to make the trail a reality. A crowd funding appeal runs from January till April. https://localgiving.org/ heartofwaleslinetrail Sponsors’ names will appear on a special Roll of Honour at Llanelli and Craven Arms stations.
