Happy Memories & a Bad Memory 50 years ago I spent a very happy two years at Bournemouth Art College. I had a great time there, although never having been to college before I wrongly assumed all colleges had the same laissez-faire attitude, miles of golden beaches and plentiful supply of top-notch accommodation. How wrong I was! Since then I have never been back and so I jumped at the chance of a trip along Bournemouth seafront from Sandbanks to my old hunting ground Hengistbury Head in the company of a gang of custom bicycle makers called The Crank Jesters. I arrived the night before and ate a lonely meal in a Portuguese restaurant in a town centre that although roughly the same topography as ‘old Bournemouth’ rang no bells whatsoever. The next day we cruised slowly from millionaires row to Hengistbury and back again and it’s fair to say I didn’t recognise a single thing! It seems Bournemouth has been wiped from my personal hard drive. On Saturday July 7th Sheep Music returns to its birthplace the Warden Presteigne with a day of music and entertainment in memory of one of its founding members, Nicola Humphries who sadly died last year. I am assuming although this first festival was 25 years ago I won’t have the same problem recognising the place as I go there 3 times a week to chase squirrels. Well it’s actually the dog that chases the squirrels (unsuccessfully), I just watch. In the late 1980s a large group of Presteigne friends would gather every evening in the Farmers Arms to drink Guinness and put the world to rights. When the Berlin Wall began to crumble there was much for us to discuss but it was only Nicola who jumped on a plane and headed for Berlin to be a part of it. When she returned with tales of wild nights in Berlin we decided to put a band together and go and play in Eastern Europe. Along with Chas and Dave (no, not that Chas and Dave!) we bought an old Mercedes and headed for Berlin. We ended up in Prague playing lots of weird clubs on the underground scene and it was there we met Czech fiddle ace Honza Hruby and his band Kukulin.
Honza Hruby
Back in Britain we decided to put an openair summer gig together for Kukulin to play and after looking at all the possible sites decided The Warden was far the most stunning location. We Email: info@broadsheep.com also thought if we were going to put up tents, get Website: www.broadsheep.com a generator and a PA system some food and a bar for just one gig we might as well extend it to 2 days and invite some local bands to play as well. So was born the first Sheep Music and that event, incidentally, spawned this magazine. After a couple of years Sheep Music outgrew the Warden and moved on to pastures new but never anywhere as beautiful as its original site. The Warden is a charming spot atop an ancient castle mound. Everyone is encouraged to bring a picnic (to share if desired) and enjoy a day of fantastic music, join in with games and activities or simply sit in the sun and soak up the atmosphere. For those who were on the Warden all those years ago it promises to bring back a lot of (we hope) happy memories. The music features sets from local favourites Little Rumba, Presteigne Pop Choir and Liv and Bertie. From further afield there’ll be sets from indie pop act The New Planet Animals and the band that everybody’s talking about from Hay, Black Mountain Boy. For children there will be games and workshops.

The event begins at 3pm and will run into the evening finishing at at 10.30. There is more information and ticket details on the advert which is on the back cover.

Ban Everything T
HERE was a bit of consternation down the Plant Hire this morning. Someone at the counter was saying that there was a government move to ban Lynx, the well-known deodorant, because young persons with nothing better to do were squirting it into plastic bags and inhaling the fumes. This at first seems an unlikely story, as various connoisseurs who seemed to have tried it were saying. The stink of Lynx, they said, would gag a maggot, give them a nice whiff of CS gas any day. But in the end the whole thing dissolved into a general shaking of heads and people saying if it ain’t Lynx it’s diesels, they will be banning skim milk next. After which the company dispersed about its lawful avocations, viz. sewage and bricklaying. But on the way home with the 40cwt Road Roller I realised that actually the Lynx-bagging scandal is a brilliant idea, carried only halfway. British Productivity, we are told, is at an all-time low and is a disgrace and all that. Banning things like DIY calor gas systems for your van, and packing parachutes for the life partner with whom you are not currently getting on all that well, is by no means productive. Piecemeal, is how they would describe it at the CBI. The only possible solution for those with our welfare at heart is to ban absolutely everything, and ban it now. After which there will be nothing left to ban, and the way will be paved for a highly sophisticated regime of inspections, providing jobs for millions, increasing productivity beyond recognition and producing a workforce with the world’s first negative unemployment figures.
6
The only way anything at all will be allowed will be by specific exemptions, available on a case-by-case basis on application to the relevant authority. Water taps, for instance, should (having been inspected by competent authorities) not only be marked CAUTION - WATER CAN BE HOT PARTICULARLY IF HEATED but also DROWNING HAZARD and CATS HATE THIS STUFF. Members of the public should not assume that they will automatically be entitled to use water. It is much safer for people to smell terrible and subsequently perish from dehydration than that the relevant officials should give permissions that are subsequently abused. The smell factor will increase demand for Lynx, which under the new rules will of course not be fulfillable, but a Government advertising campaign suggesting that people go outside and roll in a patch of mint should do the trick - provided always that the mint has passed inspection and is protected by appropriate signage. The conflicts engendered by the huge number of new regulations will provide more work for lawyers, always a very good thing, for lawyers anyway. All this will be much easier once we have left the EU. There will be fewer foreigners about, for one thing, so plenty of heavily-accented beefing will cease, and the spirit of the Blitz (Keep Your Mouth Shut and Carry On, Peasant) will once more spread its blessings on the land. We will sit down to our meagre lunches of unbaked (OVEN: HEAT HAZARD: HOT) bread and cheese (SLIP HAZARD. MAY ATTRACT RODENTS), and rejoice in our new sense of security. When everything is banned, there is nothing left to ban. And (hearken unto me, o my fellow citizens) if there is nothing to ban, there is nothing to fear! Llywelyn Hadid ap Twhir
Letters Greetings to you, Clare. In reading Mister Pernickety’s article on the White Lion, I can’t help but notice that the ignoramus is again in some difficulty with his Latin? There are no flatulanti - just flati - which any reputable schoolboy knows to be the Perfect Passive Participle, 1st person plural of flo, flare, flatum etc. “To blow”. Yours with increasing derision, Garth Lawson - true member of the literati...... Mr Pernickety makes no claim to be a member of the literati or, indeed the pedanti, and he protests at Mr Lawson’s use of the word ignoramus to describe him. The matter of Mr P’s pluralising of that word to ignorami was raised last month, and Mr P’s spokesperson responded privately to the complainant as follows: Mr Pernickety has asked me to thank you for your communication. He applauds your sharp-eyed pedantry and concedes a degree of rightness in your comments, but wonders if the Romans themselves might have used ‘ignoramus’ also as a noun – the way modern British pollsters use the plural term ‘Don’t knows’? As a regular reader, you might have noticed that Mr P has previously used the term ‘ignorami’ (describing, he recalls, the Range Roving classes sojourning in St Mawes, Cornwall), and was aware of the lexicographers’ view that the correct plural noun is the somewhat cumbersome ‘ignoramuses’. He takes the view that elegance and aural fluency will always trump precise rules of declension. He cannot claim that he was being ironic, seeing no purpose in doing so when it would be lost on all but a handful (such as yourself) of the Woolly Organ’s tens of thousands of readers. However, Mr Pernickety is, of course, happy to address Mr Lawson’s cavil with his use of the term flatulanti. Mr P, from time to time, is unable to find a word in current usage which will convey exactly his desired meaning. Thus, in common with many eminent and historic English scribblers - W. Shakespeare among them - he will resort to creating new words or variants of words to lend precision and colour to his writing. Perhaps Mr Lawson could try this in his own writing?
Dear editor Without reading every line in the June issue, I trust readers will sympathise with my Broad-reasoning. On reading a typical Broad Sheep, there’s an overwhelming sense of focus on the north of the county. The Courtyard is about the only Hereford presence. I say overwhelming since to go anywhere interesting my journey starts from Ross-on-Wye and I have just turned 77. Ross is not devoid of interest but you need to be of beer and skittles mentality. Haven’t noticed any events which might appeal to your readers in Ross. A Broad Sheep marketing campaign targetting Ross? Prof (ret’d) Alan F Harrison Dear Alan Thank you for your correspondence. I welcome any feed back and endeavour to act on the information received to include in Broad Sheep. I’m afraid it is not possible to contact all event organisers, particularly if I don’t know that an event is happening! But if anyone has a forthcoming event they wish to publicise, I am only too pleased to include in the FREE listings pages providing the information reaches me by the 15th of the preceding month. Clare

cinema A QUIET PLACE (15) While we’ll now all be gee-whizzing over the, starry, all-female rat-pack remake, Oceans 8, I’d counsel you to seek out a couple of indie slowburners, the first being this innovative sci-fiesque thriller. Opening with a family treading gingerly through a deserted rural township, we soon learn that their wariness is down to predatory alien invaders who lack vision but have super-sensitive hearing and will attack and viciously consume any life-forms that make a sound. Moreover wife Evelyn (Emily Blunt) is heavily pregnant, so what’s going to happen when her baby screams into life? Well husband Lee (director/co-writer John Krasinski) has a plan, which much of the film revolves around and the emotional resonance of how this plays out is clearly enhanced by the fact that Blunt and Krasinski are a real life married couple – and the denouement is a seat-edging triumph. All reveiws by Mark Williams

IN THE FADE (18) Don’t be deterred by the subtitles for this German-language drama is both riveting and troubling with the venerable Diane Kruger (Inglorious Basterds) as Katja, a druggy, hard-drinking travel agent whose equally wayward Kurdish ex-con husband (Numan Acar, Homeland) and their son are killed in a huge explosion. The police soon arrest the unapologetic neo-Nazi couple who appear to be responsible, and the consequent courtroom scenes that heavily invest the narrative allow Katja to express her grief and rage with hair-trigger venom. But the line between revenge and justice is tenuous and writer/director Fatih Atkin (Head On) gives clear expression to the passions on both sides – especially by the opposing lawyers and the extended families of the main protagonists - without entirely freighting them with moral judgements. A thought-provoking fable for our times. 7 & 8 July SHERLOCK GNOMES (U) 7 & 8 July SHOW DOGS (PG) 13 - 19, 27 - 31 July, 1, 2, 8, 15, 23 & 30 Aug INCREDIBLES 2 (ctbc) 13 - 19 July, 17 - 22, 31 Aug THE BOOKSHOP (PG) 27 - 31 July, 1 & 2 Aug PATRICK (PG) 27 - 31 July, 1 - 16, 24 - 30 Aug MAMMA MIA! OME cynics - if any exist among the readers of the Woolly Organ - may not believe that Mr Pernickety doesn’t always enjoy practising his critical function. They may think that he relishes the act of wielding an acid pen in order to impose his narrow views on the region’s inns and eating houses. But he does not; he is not unaware of the hurt that can felt by the proprietors of establishments that he has visited but been unable to recommend. In any case, he tries always to suggest practical ways in which shortcomings he has identified can be put right. His aim is to encourage the presence of as many good restaurants and inns as possible in the area, so that the people of the Marches have the widest available choice of enjoyable and original places in which to eat and drink. This is not, in Mr P’s view, an unworthy aim. It is, however, a challenging one. A surprising number of some of the most attractive and, on the face of it, amenable inns amid the bucolic beauty of the region have been taken on by people who manifestly have little or no understanding of what is required in creating (yes, it is a creative activity) a hostelry that is a desirable and fulfilling place to visit. These people seem not to understand that hospitality is a matter of satisfying all the senses - visual, aural, tactile, olfactory and gastronomic. Too often, in the very mistaken belief that by embracing the lowest common denominator, they will appeal to the widest number of people, they bring little imagination or simple good taste to the furniture, wall coverings, textiles and lighting they install, the music they play, the plants they stock in what is frequently and discouragingly described a ‘beer garden’, or the food they serve.

in 1461, as the Yorkist, Edward Mortimer of Wigmore Castle took on Owen Tudor and a force of Welshmen come to undermine his power base. Edward won, and marched on to London to usurp the reigning Henry VI and himself become King Edward IV. The preamble to the pub’s menu makes much of this, but at the same time what history there is to the place is much overridden by many unattractive additions and changes. For sure, for years the pub looked liked a blowsy old bag-lady to whom no-one wanted to stop and chat. It was for a while the property of some kind of pub co, until in 2014 the freehold was sold to a family of local farmers, the Goodwins. The Goodwins may, for all Mr Pernickety knows, be the best farmers in North Herefordshire, but what made them think they could take over this fairly knackered old boozer and make a successful eating place of it is baffling. At the back of the pub there is a large and not unpleasant garden, sadly marred by ungainly table/benches and the sight of an ugly rear extension with rendered walls in a peeling coat of unpleasant caramel with chocolate brown window frames.
Mr P is not unaware of the resentment that can be provoked by his trenchant views, and this manifests itself from time to time in angry objection. Within the last year, the landlord of a pub which Mr P hasn’t entered let alone reviewed - for at least twenty years, contacted the editor of this organ and declared: ‘If that Mister Pernickety comes into my pub, I’ll kill him.’
Mr P was there with his long-suffering daughter, who only seems to accompany her father to the least pleasing of establishments he must review. He enjoyed a good pint of Butty Bach, and it became clear that serving beer was the only thing this place is any good at. The bar - a fine large panelled room spoilt by cheap fairy lights and wall brackets - soon filled up with men who seemed to be enjoying their beer.
Mr Pernickety realises that individuals of far greater celebrity than he are frequently issued with death threats on Twitter and other such unsocial media and since his own experience he has developed some sympathy for them. However, readers of the Woolly Organ may remain confident that even threats to his life will never deter him from his mission to report the truth about the places he visits and assesses on their behalf.
He and Miss P ordered their dinner and wandered into a large unpeopled dining room furnished with what Mr P thinks of as Indian restaurant chairs, and pine tables with orange lacquered tops. Some bad speakers squawked out an irritating medley of crass 70s pop (Slade, Abba…..) making Mr Pernickety grew tetchy enough to challenge Miss Pernickety’s potent views on feminism.
It is therefore with some sadness that he sets down his impressions of the Mortimer’s Cross Inn, set on the junction of the road to Presteigne and the Roman Watling Street of the West. In this spot on a key conduit to Radnorshire and the centre of Wales, there is likely to have been some kind of staging post for centuries, even millenia. The current building is claimed to be 13th century, although Mr P could see no outward signs of that period. Famously (though not certainly) the battle of Mortimer’s Cross took place in a field over the road
As a starter Miss P (in veggie mode) had a slice of grilled goats’ cheese which was dry and characterless, but edible. Mr P, still searching for the perfect 70s prawn cocktail, ordered one, to find it in a glass, but short on prawns and 1000 islands dressing. Miss P’s main course Halloumi Burger had a great deal of character, but not in a good way. It contained two fat slabs of greasy, slippery cheese in a dull bun - a combination of which she could cope with only one mouthful. Mr P’s Trio of Pork was also a challenge. On a bed of unfresh tasting mash, lay a small piece of slow (over-) cooked shoulder, a piece of belly

Book Review Iolo’s Revenge by Diana Ashworth Sheep Farming by Happy Accident in Mid-Wales
46
‘Jolly, insightful and struck through with a deep affection for her adopted Wales, Iolo’s Revenge is a charming account of one couple’s eventful attempts at home-making in the hills. Peppered throughout with amusing stories and colourful characters, this book presents the joyous world of birthing ewes, pond plug-holes and truncated Welsh that the ‘Retired Lady’ has learned to call her own. An uplifting, thoroughly enjoyable read.’ – Oliver Balch, author of Under the Tump ‘They’ll do! They’re the ones I want’, said the old farmhouse, probably in Welsh, and the couple (the ones the old place wanted) were drawn into the life of the place – inspired by its beauty, its creatures, its moods and its stories. In 2005 Diana Ashworth and her husband spotted a dilapidated farmhouse with 25 acres in a rural hamlet in Montgomeryshire, the plan being for a holiday home. They were outbid at the auction, wished the new owners well and thought nothing more of it. But the sale fell through and before they knew it they’d had ‘their offer’ accepted (what offer? – I didn’t know we’d made an offer!) They moved in and were rapidly drawn deeper and deeper into the life of the place and its people, working all hours to make the tumble-down house habitable, and somehow stumbling into sheep farming along the way. Iolo’s Revenge charts the story of how Diana and Alan, an orderly, retired couple from Northamptonshire, accidentally buy a derelict farmhouse in the Welsh Marches, and their adventures over the following years – wrestling with huge sheep on freezing hillsides in the middle of the night, ‘managing’ Pedro (their wayward Spanish Labrador), grappling with tricky diggers and competing in the local dominoes tournament. They had never had any inclination to move to Wales, nor practice extreme farming, nor learn Welsh – yet life just took over and before they knew it they had rediscovered a sense of belonging and community lost since childhood. In the following extract, Diana and Alan encounter the bureaucracy of land ownership! They don’t even remember how they got into forestry. They must have done something to attract the attention of the Forestry Commission. Now they spend happy hours, drinking tea and eating bara brith, with the young forestry advisor who admits to only modest up-take of his woodland schemes this year. The retired couple suspect they are his only clients and, it turns out, his Dad used to play cricket with the retired gentleman. Farmers, he observes sadly, are generally not enthusiastic about giving up grazing land. The retired lady voices her doubts about how they will ever manage to harvest their proposed crop of oak. ‘You don’t have to worry about that,’ says the young man kindly, ‘you’ll be dead … Someone else will sort it out.’ She is reassured. The current schemes finish at the end of the following month; next year’s one will be considerably less generous, but if they get a move on they can get it all signed up before the end of the tree growing year. And they will be eligible for more than double the standard grant as there is definite evidence
that this land was wooded in the past and adjoins the remains of other ancient woods. The thought of replanting an ancient woodland appeals. And they are eligible for the Farm Woodland Premium Scheme! ‘That’s good … What exactly is that?’ ‘That’s compensation for loss of grazing and the reduction in your Single Farm Payment.’ ‘Oh yes … Single Farm Payment … I don’t think we’ve got one of those.’ ‘Of course you have; it comes in December … You have got a Holding Number, haven’t you? – A Holding Number is key to everything in Rural Payments. Without a Holding Number we are done for. You’ll have to get one issued as soon as possible; you’ll have to go to the Welsh Assembly offices … There is still time…’ Suddenly the retired couple see something new in the eyes of Robbie, the woodland advisor. It is a sort of heroism – Dunkirk spirit. They have six weeks; they can do this thing! Written with an infectious warmth and humour, Iolo’s Revenge is a hugely engaging account of the couple’s new life in the Welsh hills – a life embarked upon with gusto and generosity, openness and wonder, and interspersed with drama and a great deal of unintended comedy. Su Wheeler Iolo’s Revenge: Sheep Farming by Happy Accident in Mid-Wales by Diana Ashworth is published by Logaston Press on 6 July 2018. Includes specially commissioned silhouettes, ISBN 9781910839249 Paperback, £7.99 www.logastonpress.co.uk

grass roots Nuclear Plants As cheaper wind power surges, government backs nuclear!
Hinkley Point C, the first year of progress
I
N THE first quarter of 2018 Britain’s wind farms pumped out more electricity than did all the nuclear power stations. While those plants produced just 18.1% of all electricity, wind turbines generated almost 19%. But, despite the growing impact of wind, the government refuses to subsidise onshore wind farms. Instead it is on the way to pouring billions of pounds into new nuclear power stations. MPs have been told the government is considering direct investment in the planned Wylfa Newydd power station in Anglesey, to be built by Hitachi. The public stake is predicted to be anything from a billion pounds to 5 billion. This is a big policy u-turn and it will be the first time this century that taxpayers will be forced to fund such a project. Maybe we should now ask how far we are mortgaging the futures of our children and grandchildren for the sake of a technology saddled with a dismal record of delays and cost hikes. After all, electricity users are already in the frame to shell out huge sums for the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant in Somerset. This is because the developers of that station, EDF, have been guaranteed a price of £92.50 per megawatt hour for its power, well into the second half of this century, while the cost of new wind power has been tumbling to around two thirds of that figure. The National Audit Office, in June last year, judged Hinkley Point C to be “…a risky and expensive project with uncertain strategic and economic benefits.” Within months, in November, the scheme was panned again, this time by the Commons Public Accounts Committee. It said, “… over the life of the contract, consumers are left footing the bill and the poorest consumers will be hit hardest.” A report just out from academics, including a team from Imperial College, says that since 2010 the cost of new nuclear stations has shot up by 20% due to delays. No disrespect to the excellent boffins at Imperial, but that scale of increase was obvious by July last year, as the cost of Hinkley jumped by around £2 billion to 20 billion or more. The Hinkley Point completion date is given as 2025. But EDF, which commissioned it, has in recent years hit huge cost and timetable overruns at a similar plant at Flamanville in Normandy. So you’d be rash to wager even a spare ten Euro note on the French energy giant meeting its Hinkley start date.
50
The current timescale should be viewed in the light of the absurd optimism shown back in 2007 by EDF’s then UK chief, Vincent de Rivas. He said he hoped British customers would be cooking their turkeys with power from Hinkley Point C by Christmas 2017. But,
bearing in mind EDF’s track record, don’t count on eating your yuletide plate of turkey de Rivas any time in the next decade! Given the delays and rocketing costs, are Wylfa and Hinkley Point the end of the story for new nuclear power in Britain? Not a bit of it! There are plans for another nuclear station - at Moorside, near Sellafield in Cumbria. This was to have been built by Toshiba and Engie, until their joint venture unravelled. First Engie jumped ship. Then the Japanese industrial heavyweight Toshiba also pulled out after it came close to collapse because of big losses incurred by its American nuclear arm, Westinghouse. The Moorside project is being rescued by a Korean company, Kepco. But Kepco’s reactor design has yet to be approved by UK regulators. Meanwhile, there are plans for other reactors on the east coast, at Bradwell and Sizewell. If British firms can’t build these reactors and they are a challenge even for big Asian industrial players, how about enticing some firms from across the Atlantic? Er, maybe not. In the USA, five nuclear plants have closed in five years. Twelve more are to shut ahead of schedule and only one new plant is underway, albeit long delayed and much over budget. According to US energy expert Tim Profeta, of Duke University, “It is hard to make a business case for building new nuclear plants…even in states where utilities are allowed to recover construction costs from their customers. In de-regulated northeast and midwest power markets…no new nuclear unit has been permitted for construction since 1977.” So, with renewable power costs hurtling downwards what role is there for nuclear? Its backers say it will still be needed when the wind doesn’t blow and when the sun doesn’t shine. But nuclear reactors take ages to crank up and turn down and aren’t nearly flexible enough to fill the gaps. So Britain’s addiction to nuclear power seems increasingly to defy common sense. And it threatens to become a massive waste of money both for taxpayers and electricity consumers. Julian O’Halloran
