The Rock ‘n’ Roll Doctor S AD to hear the news of Dr John’s demise on June 6th, but it has brought back an awful lot of happy memories. Born in 1941 in New Orleans, the young Mac Rebennak was expelled from school aged 13 and already a working musician he started playing with the legendary Professor Longhair. By the time he was 16 he was hired by Ace Records as a producer and worked with James Booker and Earl King.
In 1959 he had his own minor hit, a guitar instrumental ‘Storm Warning’ but by 1960 his guitar playing career was over after sustaining a gunshot wound to the ring finger of his left hand while trying to stop someone shooting his friend, the singer Ronnie Barron. This setback precipitated a move to the piano and influenced by Booker and Longhair, he began to develop the New Orleans piano style that later made him famous. But the early 60’s was a rocky ride and after Mac had a spell in jail for narcotic possession, the New Orleans District Attorney shut down the whole sleazy night club, brothels and juke joint scene in the middle of town and musicians suddenly had nowhere to play. Mac along with many others moved to Los Angeles and became a member of the much feted, ‘Wrecking Crew’, a bunch of session musicians who could turn their hand to anything. Members of the Wrecking Crew played on everyone’s records including The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra and Nancy, Sonny and Cher, The Monkees, The Mamas & Papas, Ricky Nelson and of course Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Frank Zappa! In the middle of the psychedlic music revolution in 1968 Mac Rebennak had an idea for a record that would bring together what he had gleaned from a book his sister had given him about Haitian Voodoo and what he knew about a Dr John, a huge man who in the 1840’s was selling very expensive potions (probably just herbs and water) and Gris Gris (scriptures tied inside a cloth bag) around New Orleans. So he and arranger Harold Battiste, who was working for Sonny and Cher made use of some of Sonny and Cher’s recording time, whilst they were off filming, to pull in a crowd of New Orleans musicians and make the extraordinary album Gris Gris with its memorable opening line - “They call me Dr John, the night tripper”. The album was meant to feature his old friend Ronnie Barron (who got him shot) on vocals but when Ronnie disappeared, Mac (my voice can’t be any worse than Bob Dylan’s) took over lead vocals himself.
This was my first exposure to Dr John and my friends and I who spent an awful lot of time sitting round our flat in Portobello Road discussing the relative merits of Hendrix, Captain Beefheart, The Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Jeff Beck, Creedence Clearwater etc were intrigued as to whether Dr John had a real connection to the voodoo world or whether the whole thing was a fanciful creation. He also included the Mardi Gras Indian gangs in his gumbo mix and I imagine they were delighted with the publicity and even took some time off beating each other up to record their own album ‘The Wild Tchoupitoulas’ in 1976. In 1970 I took a six week sabbatical from trying to be an outlaw in Afghanistan to tour round India in a transit van with a very nice German called Peter Werner and a very limited selection (three) of tapes. One of them was Dr John’s second album Babylon and so the most atmospheric track, ‘The Twilight Zone’ will forever be linked with weird and wonderful nights on Juhu Beach, Bombay with a bunch of adopted beach, beggar children and stray dogs and Pondicherry sea front where we took a gang of homeless men from the park to the cinema to watch Dr No! Then in the mid 70’s I got very keen on funk music and particularly The Meters who turned out to be the backing band for two of Dr John’s best albums, ‘In the Right Place’ and ‘Desitively Bonnaroo’, as well as being the mighty Allen Toussaint’s musical children. At that time I began to be convinced that the roots of all American popular music in the 20th century - jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, soul, Doo-wop, funk, disco were to be found in New Orleans and I would spend a lot of time in pubs, boring people to death with this theory. Then in 1981 during a very amusing and slightly musical (we played three gigs) trip round America in a 5 litre Ford LTD, we managed to arrive in New Orleans the weekend before Mardi Gras. On our first night out we very, very luckily ran into Susan Spicer (now a famous TV chef), who became our guide and mentor. Sue lived in the French Quarter and knew all the musicians in town and in no time we were rubbing shoulders with all our heroes. In quick succession we saw The Meters, The New Meters, The Neville Brothers, James Booker, Sam & Dave and of course Dr John (we were sitting one row back from Allen Toussaint). Then every night at about five in the morning we’d roll up at The Absinthe Bar where all the muso’s went after their gigs were finished to watch Exhuma do his Bermudan voodoo thing with The Meters bass player George Porter Jnr on bass. T’was heaven! So - best Dr John gig - surprisingly with British band Diz & The Doormen at The Half Moon, Putney. Worst Dr John gig - with a very loud funk backing band at The Market Hall, Brecon. Best Dr John track - his version of a 1955 hit by Prince Partridge ‘How come my dog don’t bark when you come around’. Go and listen to it NOW! Seasonal Rites: The Straw Boater The place: Ever since I saw the weeping willow beyond the little bridge I had thought it might be the right place, but it took me the whole of my first year to put it all together. The willow tree was like a vast green umbrella leaning over the river and the green shade within its perimeter was invisible from the river and the bank. You could slide a boat in there and lose yourself completely. The person: He was tall and lean like a wing forward and clever and Scottish, and so damn respectful. I liked him because he was sober - mostly - except with his rugby chums and he wasn’t greedy or silly, in fact he wasn’t greedy enough for my purposes because he was so shy. He was in the throes of shaking off his Presbyterian upbringing and I had to deal with the idea of sin and God for the first time, ideas that had never crossed my mind back home, because they never entered our family’s conversation. He was often red-faced with anger or blushing with embarrassment as I simultaneously eroded his physical reticence and gutted his poorly rehearsed reasons for faith. He tried to prove the existence of God as I caressed his thighs, poor boy. I used lust as a weapon to strip him of his ancestral beliefs. But by the third term I still hadn’t seen him naked, although I had let him see me, as if by mistake, and as our exams started to come into view, I was determined that I had to seduce him - brazenly, by force if necessary - as if I could! - Before we separated for the holidays. I didn’t want him coming back in the autumn under the renewed influence of the Kirk, and in the renewed shade of his ancient family tree. He said he would probably have to go grouse shooting with his uncles. I wasn’t invited, but then I didn’t want him to meet my parents either. The time: He finished his last exam, and we met at the boating station. I was clutching a bottle of champagne and a hamper; he arrived wearing his straw boater, so traditional! - With roses and chocolates in his hand. We embarked, and he punted while I spread out the cushions and the tablecloth and the cold chicken and salad, and put the bubbly on ice. I smoked. We didn’t speak. I wondered if he knew. The sun shone, the birds sang, my nipples
6
tingled. There was nobody on our reach of the river so I slipped into my iridescent blue bikini, and dived into the water. I swam like a porpoise as he manfully guided the boat. I turned on my back to show off my breasts. “There” I said pointing to the shade of my chosen tree, “put the boat in there “ We drifted in. We had hardly sipped the champagne before he came for me, irresistible. I got rid of my knickers while he undid my top, and then, oh! His lips and kisses, I paused to remove his socks, he again gliding his hand along my thigh… and side by side… and underneath he and I… at last we… and we and we and…. Oh my god! … until we lay exhausted on the cushions. And later sleepily from behind. Never has chicken and champagne tasted better. He was good! It was nothing like the momentary spasm I had expected from my friends’ accounts of their first time; it was the full-blown article. I told him. He blushed. I pressed him “how come you’re so good?” He was soooo pleased. Eventually - not then - he told me he’d guessed what might be next and had followed his uncle’s precautionary advice. He’d - you know - in the shower before he’d set out with the red roses and the chocolate and the boater, the outward signs of seduction. He knew. The leaving: We put the straw hat in the water where it circled in a little eddy between the bridge and the willow. We placed our empty champagne glasses on top and a cigarette and a rose. The hat revolved in the current as we slipped out of the shade of the willow and moved down the river, leaving behind a memorial image of that unrepeatable unforgettable moment when we threw off the burden of our virginity. The picture we took of the straw boater turning in the water is still on our bedside table, unexplained and inexplicable to everyone except me and my husband who, by the way, is about to become an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. I didn’t win every trick. (c) Hugh Colvin 2018
Letters Dear Pete,
Sir,
I enjoyed reading your bike rides linking two pubs (in May’s Broad Sheep). Tried them out. Wild success for the first three, but I had a bit of a problem with number four, from Leintwardine to the Riverside Inn at Aymestrey. I set off quite early on a Saturday, before the Sun Inn was even open. Started off all right down Rosemary Lane, turned left for Ludlow, then left again for Leinthall Starks. But I couldn’t find Leinthall Starks, and ended up instead at Ludlow Racecourse. I assumed that L. Starks must be a bit further, so I pressed on. Got to Bridgnorth, but still no sign of LS, and not even a Riverside Inn, despite there being a bloody great river flowing straight past the town. My wife tells me I’m a slow learner and should have turned round then, but I trusted you Pete, and I knew you wouldn’t be the sort of cad to slip a deliberate mistake in your directions just to tease your loyal readers.
I would note that CPRW riposte with regard to its record on “Wind Farms” is “not strictly accurate and really a tad misleading”. CPRW has long and forthrightly argued i.e. for decades that land-based wind is uneconomic. In fact it is the cheapest “non carbon” energy; his argument that wind is somehow only suitable for urban working class industrial communities; well I rest my pen a moment, Sir.
So I kept going, even though I was beginning to wonder if there really is such a place as Leinthall Starks. A pretty unlikely name, let’s face it, for anywhere - or anyone. I thought it might possibly be the silly name of some new pop singer, or more likely a mediæval street, so I was going to browse round Bridgnorth town centre on the off-chance of the latter. But the bloke operating the cliff railway wouldn’t let me take my bike up in the carriage thingie, just because it didn’t fit, so I thought I might as well continue in the hope of finding a riverside inn further on. By teatime I was at the outskirts of Birmingham. Plenty of canalside inns there, Pete, but Brum’s on a bit of a plateau, so there’s a shortage of rivers. Stopped for a pie and chips near the Aston Expressway, and re-read your instructions on the Leintwardine - Aymestrey route. That’s when I spotted, a bit late, your little private joke about turning left and left again for Leinthall sodding Starks. My mistake, your intention. You ruined my weekend, Pete, and you did it on purpose. You’re a sadistic bastard, Pete, and you know it. That’s the last time I read your mighty organ, Pete. You are out of my life for ever. Clear off, and take your stupid wide sheep with you.
The central problem as with “renewables” for example on the Severn and the Tidal Barrage and Lagoons is endless objections from single interest “ charities” re “balance” and “impacts”. A barrage built in the 80’s would have paid off its costs substantially by now and driven intermittency storage research; these facilities are near the large markets of South Wales and Bristol and would lose nothing to transmission resistance while lasting potentially 100’s of years. I hope that mid Wales and Marches people and their representatives take note re “Tidal Power”; its volumes are very large and consistent.
Digger
The great problem with wind development in UK is that it has “benefited” land owners and not local communities. Now, who would object if land were compulsorily purchased for this purpose, as with roads, and the first beneficiaries were the villages and towns around as in the German model? Let’s say every village/ town had its own turbine(s) with a strategic spread to even the load on the grid to facilitate redistribution?
I do not have a problem with turbines visual impact; the issue is who benefits and the positive impact on decarbonisation? I hope CPRW agree that there is a clear need for a National Agency with a strategic national overview to achieve this by 2030. National energy security will be enhanced if driven partly by clear local benefits to a nationalised grid; in tandem we need to reduce consumption and start removing CO2 from the atmosphere at scale with a new Ethical Foreign Policy to the UN so that by 2050 Co2 is returning towards 400ppm and we address our Industrial Carbon Debt. The task is not insurmountable with global will; it is considerable however. Peter
Dear Digger I guessed some idiot like you would fall for my ruse. You should, of course have realised your mistake when you spotted Maggie Smith at Downton Castle. It was of course left and then right if you wanted to find the ‘Naked Lentil’. Anyway I don’t care, I’m quids in thanks to one extremely grateful publican on the Aston Expressway!

cinema WOMAN AT WAR (12A)
The second feature from Icelandic director, Benedikt Erlingsson largely lacks the sometimes bloody shock value of his debut, OF HORSES AND MEN but is nonetheless as wryly eccentric and even more affecting. It stars Halladora Geirharosdottir (also a HORSES co-star) as middle-aged choirmistress-cum-eco-warrior, Halla, who is determined to stop her country’s slide into fossil-fuelled heavy industry, as the Icelandic authorities strive to arrest her. Halla is clearly ingenious as well as committed to fighting the good fight and in what is almost a one-woman campaign – hence the film’s title – we are all soon rooting for her as she bring down unsightly powerlines with explosives (and her crossbow) and has an unexpected brush with motherhood. Co-writer Erlingsson and his regular cinematographer, Bergsteinn Bjorgulfsson have skillfully wrought a gripping, latter-day David vs. Goliath fable which makes maximum use of their tiny country’s dramatic landscapes and cultural guilelessness. LATE NIGHT (15) American T.V. has provided both subject matter (e.g. KING OF COMEDY, MORNING GLORY) and a wealth of creative talent (e.g. Tina Fey, Robert Altman) for the film industry, and in this scattergun comedy vehicle for newly-minted ecoactivist (and firstclass flyer!) Emma Thompson, the two are nicely melded. Thompson plays Katherine Newbury, the wise-cracking hostess of a long-running but ailing America talk show who in her network’s efforts to stop the rot persuade her to add a lone woman, Molly Patel (comedienne Mindy Kaling, OCEAN’S EIGHT, THIS IS THE END and the film’s actual writer) to the show’s all-male scriptwriting team. As directed by experienced T.V. sitcom helmswoman Nisha Ganatra and despite inevitable and perhaps unfair comparisons to 30 ROCK, the film belts along at a heady, compelling pace, and as the incumbent scribblers are revealed as boorish and smug there’s a neat sub-text that will appeal to the Me Too movement.

WHITE CROW (12A) Rudolf Nureyev’s story is well-known as it is heartachingly dramatic: born on a Siberian railway train, nurtured under harsh tutelage by the Soviets only to defect sensationally to the West, aged just 23, after appearing with the Kirov company in 1961, Paris he then became a world renowned dancing legend. In his third directorial outing, Ralph Fiennes employs extensive flashbacks to remind us yet again of Nureyev’s impoverished background and subsequent if often tempestuous career and THE WHITE CROW – as he was nicknamed – relies heavily on the dancing skills of Ukrainian ballet star, Oleg Ivenko in his first-ever acting role. Fiennes himself plays Nureyev’s Parisian mentor, Alex Pushkin, whose wife Xenia (Chulpan Khamatova) soon forms an heartfelt emotional bond as he also appears to do with a brittle young socialite, Clare Saint (Adèle Exarchopoulos, BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR). It must be said that all three professional thesps, plus a fine script from David Hare offset any shortcomings there might be in Ivenko’s performance, except, of course, when he straps on his pumps.

The Cafe @ All Saints, Hereford
L
IKE many tweedy old geezers, Mr Pernickety has always had an interest in ancient, especially medieval buildings. Certainly, he has been an admirer of All Saints church in Hereford since thirty years ago when he first observed its leaning spire above the more mundane rooftops of the small city. Historically, Hereford’s planners are guilty of many crimes against good taste – the Inland Revenue building in Broad Street, for instance, the Maylord Orchards complex, already out-of-date before its time; the Left Bank building, a clumsy disaster from the start – but at least they always restricted the height of new buildings, allowing the old churches and St Ethelbert’s Cathedral to dominate the city skyline, hence the great visibility of All Saints’ formerly and endearingly wonky steeple. Mr P can’t recall how many years have passed since the church commissioners decided that if the steeple wasn’t straightened, sooner or later it would come crashing to the ground and cost them greatly in maimed or deceased members of the public who might have been in the way. So, despite the continued untroubled existence of the similarly, if more drastically afflicted Leaning Tower of Pisa, the church’s steeple was dismantled and re-erected at right angles to the earth, sadly depriving it of its quirky charm. Another glorious old building on the brink of losing much of its interior charm is the poor old Feathers Hotel in Ludlow. Having been closed two years ago as a result of an outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease, and subsequently sold, the new owners, an unimpressive outfit called Crest Hotels, have submitted some plans for the interior of that fine building that are distinctly alarming. A foretaste of their style is visible in the former bar next to the main building, now functioning as a café/teashop. Mr P felt it his duty to see what was happening and pushed open the door from the top of Corve Street to find what looks like a cheap cafeteria, complete with Formica-topped tables, including some pointless and inappropriate high seating. With a colour ‘scheme’ of mushroom and black the soulless space lacks any aesthetic qualities. If this style is to be reproduced in the older part of the building, Mr Pernickety fears that the hotel will remain what it has been for years – a handsome white elephant at the heart of the town, catering for undiscerning, discount tourists – and the chances of the hotel winning back lost local trade will be negligible. This represents a deeply regrettable missed opportunity for the place to be transformed into the fine boutique hotel it has the potential to become.

Meanwhile, the ancient stones of All Saints church at the top of Hereford’s Broad Street still give pleasure, despite the introduction some twenty years ago of a sleek timber and metal interior, comprising a café/restaurant, galleried seating area, kitchens and a silver corrugated loo-unit. The church still functions as a church, but as fewer people find a need to express their spirituality in
traditional services, preferring to contact the Almighty perhaps through What’s App or Twitter, secular uses have taken over. The South Chapel is a more or less permanent shop, selling assorted knick-knackery, perhaps with a charitable destination for some of the profits. There are still seats in the Nave, where intrepid souls may pray when it isn’t occupied by audiences for concerts, flamenco nights or drama productions. Half the church was taken over in 1997 by semi-celebrity chef, Bill Sewell, who had a track record of serving victuals in consecrated buildings, having made a success of running a vegetarian café, The Place Below in the crypt of St Mary-le-Bow in the City of London’s Cheapside, which he has subsequently sold. He is now rumoured to be taking on the café/restaurant that will emerge from the newly remodelled Ludlow Assembly Rooms. Mr Pernickety has in the past eaten at All Saints several times with enjoyment, but not recently and he wanted to see if Bill Sewell had retained his distinctive skills. Bill relinquished his strictly veggie policy years ago and serves a broadly-based menu which changes often with fresh, unexpected ideas. For his lunchtime visit on behalf of the readers of the Woolly Organ, Mr P queued at the counter with his tray and selected from the day’s options a Vietnamese beef dish, served on a bed of rice with a ciabatta roll. He carried it up the stairs to the gallery, appreciating the concept and good design of the place. Up here, close to the wonderful old ceiling timbers there is a fine medieval joke to be enjoyed where one of the C13th carpenters embellished a bracket with a small carved man, blatantly displaying his treen buttocks and genitalia – perhaps some kind of comment on his conditions of employment. The Vietnamese beef was super. Even now, a few days later, Mr P can recall the clever subtle tanginess of it and its juices which permeated the rice on which it sat. A dish like this can provide a reflective, special interlude in the course of a busy day. Afterwards he submitted to the temptation of a whopping slice of sumptuous, creamy carrot cake and a cup of good coffee. He left happy that his lunch promised much for the Assembly Rooms in Ludlow, if the rumours of Bill Sewell’s proposed stewardship turn into actuality. It was, Mr P thought, a pleasure to have something to look forward to in these gloomy days. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots Stalled, Skewed or Stuck - Jet Stream Ruins Summer!
T
HE heavy rain and floods which hijacked our sunny season in mid-June were almost certainly caused in part by a fast flow of air - the jet stream - five to ten miles above sea level. When the jet stream goes on the blink, millions of people may suffer, either from relentless rain and cold or from extreme heat. When the jet stream is flowing evenly, west to east, from North America to Europe, it helps to contain a giant area of low pressure and cold over the north pole. This is known as the polar vortex. But when the jet stream weakens, its transatlantic track becomes wavy. Its huge kinks allow cold air from the arctic to move south. They appear to be behind the dreadful spell of wet weather that began to hit Britain and Europe around June 9th. In case you were asleep at the time, or living it up, perhaps drinking rum punch on a Caribbean island, I will just mention that parts of Britain got a month’s rainfall in one day. And the next day they got the same all over again. It was like being back in the winter – only worse. At least in winter the sun usually appears every few days!
Rossby waves normally move from west to east, taking high pressure and low pressure systems with them. But, when they slow down or become static, they can do a lot of damage, subjecting the population of a given area to days or even weeks of relentlessly wet or hot weather.
Ideally the jet stream flows along a band of latitude bringing with it the high and low pressure systems whose paths our weather forecasters love to dwell on. But when the jet stream develops S bends and becomes like a serpent spreading its curves across the Atlantic, then watch out!
Kai Kornhuber, quoted on the Oxford University website, says, “Our study shows that the specific locations and timing of the 2018 summer extremes weren’t random but directly connected to the emergence of a re-occurring pattern in the jet stream which stretches around the entire northern hemisphere.”
The World Meteorological Organisation hints that we were put on notice of trouble looming at the beginning of this year when the Alps got record snowfalls. “In Hochfilzen in the Tirol region of Austria,” it tells us, “more than 451 centimetres of snow fell in the first fifteen days of January, an event statistically expected only once a century.” (In old money, I reckon that’s about 15 feet of snow!)
Dr Kornhuber says the incidence of the wave patterns responsible has increased in recent decades. His team found that the same pattern had occurred during European heatwaves in 2003, in 2006 and in 2015, which are among the greatest hot spells ever recorded on the continent.
When the jet stream cuts up rough, it pays to be on the south side of it. But if the jet stream is below Britain, looping down and writhing through Spain or southern France, then here in the UK you can expect to be stuck in low pressure with the usual attendant miserable cold and rain. On the other hand, those on the warm side of a wave in the jet stream may find themselves enduring long bouts of extreme heat. Heatwaves that afflicted several European countries in 2018 have also been linked by meteorologists to errant jet stream behaviour. Stifling temperatures led to wildfires across Scandinavia and in Greece. In the same year, California and Texas also suffered from unbearable heat and extensive and deadly fires.

Swedish-American meteorologist, who studied the jet stream in the 1940s.
A team of climate scientists at Oxford University, led by Dr Kai Kornhuber, has shown that much of this weather can be correlated with the position of large bends in the jet stream. These kinks are known as “Rossby waves”, after Carl Gustav Rossby, a pioneering
Top American climate scientists have an analysis very similar to that of the Oxford team. Michael Mann, Professor of Atmospheric Science at Pennsylvania State University, recently discussed the role of the jet stream in the Scientific American. From a US perspective, the jet stream usually blows roughly along America’s border with Canada. Michael Mann says, “The band is sometimes fairly straight, but it can take on big bends – shaped like an S lying on its side. It typically curls northward from the Pacific Ocean into Western Canada, then turns southward across the US Midwest, then back up toward Nova Scotia. Professor Mann draws a strong link between extreme weather and climate change. His team has “recently shown that these highly curved, stalled wave patterns have become more common because of global warming, boosting extreme weather.” His article is headed, “Strange waves in the jet stream foretell a future full of heatwaves and floods.” You have been warned!
