An Open Letter to Lewis Hamilton Dear Lewis I am writing to support your understandable fury at the timing of the British Grand Prix. The fact that both the Cricket World Cup and the Wimbledon Men’s Final fall on the same date makes it very difficult to decide which channel one should be watching. I guess it’s even harder for you, stuck in that little cockpit, and even with all the fancy gizmos and computers they have these days you can hardly be expected to take your eye off the road while barrelling down the Hangar Straight at 200mph in order to snatch a look at your iPhone and check on Federer’s progress. (By the way he’s 5-1 up in the second set). The cricket is less of a problem as it is a slow-moving, boring, procession of a game (a bit like Formula 1 in fact) and your mechanics could probably keep you up to date on the scores while giving you instructions on your radio. “Hi Lewis, you’re doing a great job. Turn your engine setting down to three and try and preserve your rear tyres and Guptill is out, bowled LBW to Woakes for 19.” Anyway, I fully sympathise with your point of view because we have exactly the same problem in Presteigne. Some idiot has scheduled the Presteigne Carnival, The Chopper Club of Wales Annual Meet at the Timber Yard and The Kinsham Country & Classic Car Show all on the same weekend! What to do? After a hard week at the office, trying to think up daft things to write about in Broad Sheep, I was hoping for a quiet weekend sitting on the verandah in the sunshine trying to work out where the wasps who are busy eating the frame of our porch are taking all those tons of wood chip and what is the exact location of the Empire State Building of wasps nests they are building. But Lewis, as if that wasn’t enough, I have the added problem of being fanatic about the Tour de France which is just getting to the end of the first week. Unlike you, who just buzzes round the track for two hours and then buggers off in your private jet to hang out with some rap stars, poor old Geraint Thomas has still got two weeks to go before he can start thinking about guzzling Moet Chandon in Paris. Talking of Champagne, I am a little concerned about Geraint’s penchant for the fabulous fizz. As you probably know G as his friends call him has been falling off his bike rather a lot lately. A fairly bad crash on Stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse has been followed so far by two falls in the Tour de France.
Now I happen to know a thing or two about falling off my bike and I have noticed it often happens after one too many bottles of Côte du Rhône. One minute you’re cycling happily up Ford Street, the next, bang, you’re lying in the hedge with a stupid grin on your face, hoping that none of the neighbours is going to choose that moment to put their recycling bins out. The rumour is that, after winning last year’s Tour de France, G kept on celebrating long after Father Christmas had put the reindeer out to graze for spring. Now I realise that you are such Email: info@broadsheep.com a dedicated goody-goody that Website: www.broadsheep.com it’s never occurred to you that the stuff they give you on the podium is good for anything except spraying down the back of Sebastian Vettel’s racing overalls, but I imagine if after every day’s racing G got given a monster bottle of Moet, then he wouldn’t be up to much on the wonderfully named ‘Les Planches des Belles Filles’ in the Vosges Mountains. Incidentally, Lewis, I have just checked and it’s not Moet it’s Jerriboams of GH Mumm that you get on the podium and next time you should give yours to unhappy Valterri Bottas who definitely was the better driver but still ended up second as his increasingly glum demeanour confirms. So to sum up the weekend and to give you a flavour of what you missed, here are the highlights. 1. The Carnival Parade was led off by a gang of 30 bikers from the Chopper Club of Wales. They scare the willies out of all the people waiting in the High Street and get to the carnival site ¼ hour before the procession and take complete control of the bar area. 2. A woman stands on top of a horse and while galloping round the ring manages to make the horse skip through a monster skipping rope. 3. Simona Halek whips Serena 6-2 6-2 in the Women’s Final. Serena exhausted after being forced to play mixed doubles with Andy Murray. 4. Wasps seem to be heading West towards the end of the garage. 5. The fab brand new Community Performance Barn is used for the first time and plays host to the Gardening and Craft competition. The longest rhubarb stalk is 36 inches. 6. Geraint crashes on Stage 8 of the Tour, but manages to get back on and rejoin the field. 7. Charlie once again fails to place in the Waggiest Tail competition. 8. The Carnival crowd is serenaded by PLUG, The Pearl Lake Ukulele Group. 9. New Zealand all out for 241 in the Cricket World Cup. 10. The Kinsham Country Show features Morris Minors, Unimogs and some very dangerous biting tortoises. 11. Although 5-1 up in the second set, Federer loses to Djokovik. 12. England also score 241 but somehow that means they win. No, me neither! 13. Geraint survives another day, but I have a strange feeling that this year it could be Julian Alaphilippe who’s wearing the Yellow in Paris. Yours sincerely PS Congrats for winning the British GP, have a Methuselah of Mumms on me! Cover pic: Hannah Lash, Presteigne Festival, 22 - 27 August

Surprise surprise! Y
OU just knew it was going to be one of THOSE days, the sort of day where only the unexpected happens. And not only the unexpected but the bizarre, weird, surreal. Just when you thought you had everything under control life bowls you a googly. Maybe Joan Rivers got it spot on: ‘In life the only thing you can expect is the unexpected; the only surprise is a day that has none’. We needed a shed. Someone recommended a Birmingham-based outfit that not only sold sheds but also manufactured them. So I went. ‘You need to see the gaffer’, a workman told me, ‘he’s in the office’. Simple enough, wouldn’t you think? What could possibly go wrong? Well, as soon as the boss saw me he leapt excitedly to his feet and began to jump up and down. ‘See’, he said, ‘I can actually do it! I can jump up and down!’ I was about to congratulate him when his next sentence stumped me: ‘And it’s all thanks to you!’ Then, even more alarmingly, he rolled up his left trouser leg and urged me to take a closer look at his knee. Yes, it was going to be one of THOSE days. To the best of my knowledge books on etiquette remain silent on how to react when a total stranger invites you to inspect his left knee. All I wanted was a shed. There was, of course, an explanation of sorts for his peculiar antics: he thought he was talking to the surgeon who had recently operated on his leg. But even odder, much odder, he refused absolutely to believe that I was NOT his surgeon and insisted on addressing me throughout as ‘doc’. [Needless to say, I went elsewhere for my shed.] While waiting for my train home I spotted a man dressed only in the briefest of shorts and sporting a magnificent Native-American feathered headdress. He walked several times up and down the platform, carrying a mobile phone and a sky-blue handbag. Fearing that I might be in the grip of sort sort of hallucination I pointed the man out to the middle-aged lady sitting next to me on the platform bench. Could she see him too? Yes, she could. I was relieved. It was not an apparition. But despite the weird spectacle in front of us, she registered not an ounce of surprise, she merely admired the handbag. ‘If I’m not mistaken’, she said, ‘it’s Lulworth Blue in the Farrow and Ball collection’. Priceless! On the overcrowded train back home while working my way through the carriages trying to find an empty seat, in the first class section I passed a table with four passengers sitting around it: two businessmen, an elderly lady... and a sheep. Oh yes, a sheep. It was not a real sheep, of course. I knew this straight away because it was reading The Sun. Two things struck me as odd. First, you don’t expect to come across a person dressed as a sheep and reading the Sun, at least not in first class.
6
Secondly, you’d expect people to be a touch surprised, don’t you think? Not a bit of it. It was as though seeing people dressed as sheep was a daily occurrence. After eventually finding a seat I told the lugubrious-looking man sitting opposite that further down the carriage was someone dressed as a sheep, reading The Sun. He replied with the tired, worldweary voice of someone who had seen it all, ‘Nothing surprises me any more. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d even been reading The Times’. He had echoed the words of Dickens - ‘I know enough of the world to have almost lost the capacity of being much surprised by anything’. How sad. More recently, my train to Hereford was full of teenagers on their way to school and college. One lone soul was reading a book while nearly all of the others in my line of sight were tapping buttons and gazing at screens. Their faces were totally blank: no sign of emotion. No communication. No smiles. No signs of being human, almost. Nothing. There was something disturbingly sinister about the whole scenario. These ramblings bring me, thankfully, to some sort of point, namely, our ability to be surprised, or perhaps our growing inability. Which prompts me, dear reader, to share with you one or two worries. Are we becoming immune to surprises? Are we losing the ability to be amazed, shocked, blown away, fully engaged? Has blasé become the norm? Have we ‘seen it all’? But if the ability to be surprised is a defining characteristic of being human, ought we not to worry if this capacity is being somehow undermined? I wouldn’t be surprised. Philosopher-in-Residence

The Castle Hotel, Bishop’s Castle
M
ISTER Pernickety has written before about his fondness for the small market town of Bishop’s Castle and its collection of charmingly original or beguilingly alternative shops, which deliver a distinctly retro aura, vestiges of a time when famous rock musicians arrived seeking nirvana in the west Shropshire hills. There still lingers about the town a sense that one might encounter whiffs of musk or marijuana, redolent of the Isle of Wight ‘69. One doesn’t, of course, in these law-abiding times, but a visit to the town does offer the chance of a short immersion in a pool of pleasing nostalgia in more ways than one. Mr P so far has reported on only a couple of eating establishments in the town or nearby – the charming Chai Shop in the High Street, and the Coach House in Norbury. Seeking to put this right, he decided to take his Lovely Companion off for lunch there on a hot summer Saturday and make an appraisal of one or other of the half dozen pubs in the town. Mr P with his usual complacency had failed to engage in any pre-search, so he and the LC were surprised, and a little peeved to find the streets closed, draped with bunting and thronged with hordes of stout people in unflattering shorts and unsophisticated festive shirts wandering about clutching plastic tankards, for the town was in the throes of its annual beer festival; none of the pubs were serving their normal menus. The review trip had to be abandoned, while Mr P had to deal with the LC’s pangs of hunger; she had set her sights on a fish pie from the Castle Hotel’s pop-up pie shop. Mr P agreed to a steak’n’ale pie, which they ate happily enough in the garden on the small hill behind the hotel, while a band composed of more or less vintage musicians on a rustic wooden stage, performed plausible Santana covers, which got Mr P’s brogues tapping until one of the players started to sing. Realising that reviewing a pie at a beer festival wouldn’t be helpful, Mr P found that things would be back to normal the following day, and returned then. There were few signs of lasting damage from the Beer Fest as they staggered up the hill to the fine stone edifice which is the Castle Hotel. They were shown to an old oak table with pleasingly worn ladderback chairs in a small snug bar. Looking around, it was clear to Mr P that the place is run by someone with a similar view on how country hotels should be furnished. Even the LC approved of the rustic-chic mint coloured wainscoting and dusty plum walls.
22
The menu, though short, includes a couple of interesting vegan/veggie options. To start with, Mr and the LC shared a seafood plate which offered easily enough for two, with some slices of good gravlax, sweet cured anchovies and undressed prawns. This was a half-satisfying dish; the prawns were dull
until one found the creamy sauce underneath them. There were a few lettuce leaves on the plate, but the dish could have been brought more to life with some fennel fronds and a handful of rocket. The LC, always inquisitive, chose a vegan dish: Wild Mushroom and Hazelnut Crumble – served with new potatoes dunked in various healthy seeds. She declared it, ‘all right’, while regretting the absence of dairyproduct flavours. Mr P always considers a place’s ability to produce a traditional roast beef Sunday lunch a reliable test of its overall skills. He asked for the beef to be as rare as possible. The waitress had the honesty to say that she could not guarantee at that stage in the day that it would be as pink as I wanted. But it came just rare enough – good quality marbled beef which Mr P enjoyed a lot. The vegetables on the plate with it – roast potatoes, roast squash (which worked well) and cheesy cauliflower were all good. Sadly, the large individual Yorkshire pudding appeared to have sat around long enough to become soggy in some parts and splintery in others. Mr P felt that if it can’t be served pretty fresh, it probably isn’t worth serving at all. A supplementary dish of new pots, carrots, broccoli and French beans was entirely superfluous and had nothing to add. The beans looked as limp as the wrists of the late Liberace, and about as wrinkled; Mr P didn’t even bother to try them. To finish, while the LC had a scoop of refreshing lemon sorbet, Mr P indulged himself with a Pinkster’s Gin and Raspberry Cheesecake with a dollop of ice cream. It came in a little Kilner jar and was entirely delicious – a fine coda to what had been a good lunch. Mr P happily recommends Sunday lunch at the Castle, and looks forward to eating dinner there before too long. www.misterpernickety.com

Classical Chat: Presteigne Festival F OR many people in the UK, August Bank Holiday weekend means a last chance to get out the buckets and spades and head for the beach. For a loyal band of music-lovers, however, the last weekend in August means Presteigne Festival and six packed days of talks, exhibitions, films and concerts in St Andrew’s Church, the Assembly Rooms and other venues such as the beautiful churches at Discoed, Pembridge and Bleddfa. There is an American theme this year, and the opening concert on Thursday 22 August in St Andrew’s ventures into rather different musical territory from usual. ‘The Sound of His Music’ will be a celebration of Broadway legend Richard Rodgers. Four singers – Rebecca Bottone, Kate Valentine, Helen Evora and Damian Thantrey, will breathe life into saints and sinners, young lovers and femmes fatales with classic numbers such as ‘Blue Moon’, and ‘The Lady is a Tramp’ from musicals such as South Pacific, The Sound of Music and Oklahoma. Jonathan Lyness, best known to local audiences as the musical director of Mid Wales Opera, will accompany the singers on the piano and the narrator for the event will be the festival’s artistic director, George Vass. Film editor Tony Lawson will be introducing a series of American Movies: Ernst Lubitsch’s 1939 Ninotchka, starring Greta Garbo; Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat (1953), starring Glenn Ford; and Miloš Forman’s 1975 One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, starring Jack Nicholson. Ian Marchant follows up last year’s talk based on his acclaimed guide to the ‘Beats, Hippies, Freaks, Punks, Ravers, New-Age Travellers and Dog-on-a-Rope Brew Crew Crusties of the British Isles, 1956–1994’ with snapshots from the diary of his 8-x-great-grandfather Thomas Marchant, 17141728 in ‘One Fine Day in Hurstpierpoint’. The literature strand also includes Nicholas Murray comparing Orwell and Huxley, and Fiona Sampson discussing her biography of Mary Shelley. Local artists will be opening their studios to visitors over the festival weekend and this includes Sir Sidney Nolan’s studio at The Rodd, just outside Kate Valentine Presteigne.
24
At the heart of the festival, however, are the concerts and the many visiting performers and composers, some new to Presteigne, others valued friends of the festival and the town, who take part. American harpist Hannah Lash is one of the newbies, appearing in the dual roles of performer and composer; there are several UK premieres of her music and the final concert on Tuesday 17 August includes the world premiere of her concerto for flute (soloist Katherine Bryan) and string orchestra, a Presteigne Festival commission. The other
Tom Poster
composer-in-residence this year is Cheryl Frances-Hoad, a regular visitor whose music is always imaginative and original. The Albion Quartet and clarinettist Rozenn Le Trionnair will give the world premiere of her clarinet quintet ‘Tales of the Invisible’, paired with Walton’s quartet No 2 in A minor and Dvorák’s ‘American’ quartet. Other solo performers include percussion duo George Barton and Siwan Rhys, cellist Alice Neary, violinist Mathilde Milwidsky and pianist Tom Poster. This year’s choir is the Presteigne Festival Chamber Choir, trained and conducted by Philip Sunderland. Their solo concert in Pembridge on the afternoon of Monday 26 August includes works by a variety of mainly 20th and 21st-century composers, among them Cecilia McDowall, James MacMillan, Imogen Holst and Ola Gjeilo. The centrepiece of the programme is the magical ‘O magnum mysterium’ by the American composer Morten Lauridsen, which should sound stunning in St Marys Church, and several of the other works are settings of the same text, including one by William Byrd. The choir also sings at the Festival Service in St Andrew’s Church, at which the preacher will be the Dean of Hereford, the Very Reverend Michael Tavinor. Works by American composers such as Ned Rorem, Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber are dotted through the programme, which also includes pieces by composers of other nationalities that were written or completed in America, such as Benjamin Britten’s song cycle Les Illuminations and Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks. But the festival stays close to its roots too, with Cecilia McDowall’s Radnor Songs and a new concerto for string orchestra by Kington resident Adrian Williams, one of the founders of Presteigne Festival. Bring it on! Clair de Lune Presteigne Festival takes place 22-27 August. Tickets can be booked online, by phone 01544 267800 or at the Box Office in the Assembly Rooms, Presteigne Mon-Sat 11am-2pm from 15 July, 10am-5pm from 19 August. www.presteignefestival.com

grass roots Sea Level Rise Will Create Climate Refugees in Britain
A
N academic study which came out in May addressed the threat of an enormous worldwide rise in sea level in the next eighty years. A group of 22 climate scientists were asked to estimate plausible ranges for a jump in ocean levels due to melting of the ice sheets of Greenland and of both East and West Antarctica.
Fairbourne, Gwynedd
The process they went through was called a “structured expert judgment study”. From what I could see they were required to make an intelligent guess, informed by all their research and that of others. I can imagine climate change deniers going apoplectic. But the scientists can hardly be accused of cooking the books if they are merely giving estimates! The study was led by Jonathan Bamber, professor of physical geography at Bristol University. He and his colleagues looked at the possibilities for rising height of the seas under both low and high future global temperature increases. According to Professor Bamber, the method led to “a small but meaningful probability of sea level rise exceeding two metres by the year 2100 under the high temperature scenario.” This is around double the upper limit considered so far by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In case we think this high-end global heating to be at the extreme end of things, it is very roughly what we may endure if greenhouse gas emissions go on increasing as they are doing now. Of course, in the Paris Agreement of 2015, the majority of countries pledged to limit global warming to 2 degrees C, or if possible 1.5 C. But, so far, the actual performance of the world is much closer to business as usual, which could lead to a 5 degrees C rise by 2100. Even the discussion by respected climate scientists of two metres of sea level rise seems shocking. Aside from the giant ice sheets melting or collapsing, there are other factors raising sea level - the thermal expansion of warming sea water and the melting and retreat of mountain glaciers. Also, as sea level rises, global heating will cause more extremes of weather, say the experts. One facet of that is bigger and stronger storms. And those will compound the impact of higher oceans. This growing threat from the oceans needs to be set against what climate scientists were thinking ten or fifteen years ago. I can’t recall any of them at that time touching with a bargepole the idea of a two metre rise. Indeed, back then, most seemed reluctant to consider even one metre.
46
There is little doubt that two metres of sea level rise could create a climate refugee problem on a vast scale. So far, since 1900, the increase has been a bit over 20 centimetres – or 8 inches. And yet Wales already faces the prospect of a village in Barmouth Bay having to be abandoned, possibly within thirty years.
The 850 residents of Fairbourne, in Gwynedd, have been warned by the county council that it can’t continue to defend them from the encroaching sea. People may have to move away before 2050. At present the homes at Fairbourne shelter behind a shingle embankment. After flooding in 2014 this structure was upgraded at a cost of £6.8 million. Since then the message from Gwynedd council has been, in effect, that larger defences would be uneconomic. According to reports, a senior flood and coastal erosion risk manager with the council has suggested residents may have to begin leaving in 20 to 30 years from now. Even if money were not a problem, when it comes to fighting floods, tides and coastal erosion, there is only so much that can be achieved by enlarging or strengthening protective structures. In England, the Environment Agency chairman, Emma Howard Boyd, has implied that people in a number of places along the coasts may see their communities sacrificed later in this century, in the face of climate threats so great that “recovery will not always be the best long term solution”. She says, “We need to move away from talking about flood “defence”… “We cannot expect to build our way out of future climate risks with infinitely high walls and barriers… “We cannot win a war against water.” Julian O’Halloran Emma Howard Boyd, Environment Agency Chairman
