OU probably read about the first driverless car fatality. It happened a couple of weeks ago in Florida. A Tesla car with an automatic pilot system ran into the side of a white truck in bright sunlight while the driver was supposedly watching a Harry Potter film. Tesla immediately claimed this was the first fatality in 130 million miles of driverless cars, as distinct from the usual figure of one fatality per 90 million miles of conventional driving. Don’t worry, nothing is going to stop the march of the driverless vehicle, especially if Google has anything to do with it. They are up to their neck in driverless technology, to the tune of billions and billions of dollars. (Google search refuses to tell me the exact amount!) So how is this going to pan out on the roads of Britain? I guess I can sort of imagine the M4 with three lanes of Google cars and the occasional Tesla, gently humming along exactly 30 feet away from the one in front and the one behind at a steady 69mph, while inside the vehicles contented little businessmen are busy clacking away on their laptops trying to finish their accounts before they get to Swindon. But there are a few typically British scenarios I find it much harder to envisage. 1. The early days. There will just be one or two self-driving vehicles on the motorway which is full of roadworks and traffic jams. Every time your self-drive tries to get 30 feet away from the car in front, some idiot in a white van jumps into the space. Your self-drive slams on the anchors, the bloke behind (a yobbo in a Citroen Saxo with a big exhaust) starts hooting and trying to ram you up the arse. Meanwhile the kids in the car next to you are leaning out the windows trying to watch your Harry Potter movie. It’s driverless hell on wheels. 2. Most people I know and 75% of the population (Broad Sheep estimated figures) drive ratty old 12 year old Renaults that barely scraped through the last MOT. Most of the rest drive uninsured 25 year old death traps (Broad Sheep estimated figures). What happens when they all start going wrong? What happens when the electronics on your computer start seizing up? One minute you are flat out, the next you are madly swapping lane to lane giving the passengers heart attacks and severly imparing your ability to concentrate on the plot of the Harry Potter movie. But most worrying of all - what happens to all those taxi drivers and posh people’s chauffeurs? Rolls Royce have already launched their new driverless prototype which is basically a large ‘World of Leather ’ sofa whith a roof and no visible wheels. It is also probably the ugliest car known to man. 3. This next is the really worrying point. How are driverless cars meant to cope with the Radnorshire lanes. When you get into that eyeball to eyeball situation on a single track lane, who backs down first if there is no driver? Will the autopilot know there is a large entrance to a field of cows just round the corner you can duck into? What happens when it encounters five very young and stupid six-week old lambs that need to be shepherded carefully back
through the hole in the hedge? I am also worried about the inevitable transfer of the technology to other transport vehicles. Obviously the tractor drivers are going to love it. (They are already on their mobile phones 24/7 as you may have noticed). In the future they will probably just be able to head off down the pub and leave the John Deere to plough up the bottom pasture on it’s own. But what about driverless motorbikes? How safe will they be? What about driverless bicycles? I mean literally driverless bicycles just driving around the roads getting in everyone’s way, with nobody on them! I’m sorry I know I’m a stupid old Luddite, but it’s just not going to work. We need a different vision of the future, something more sci-fi, something more HG Wells, and I think I’ve found it. For a long time I’ve been of the opinion that we need very small cars that don’t go very fast. It’s a no-brainer, especially considering how quickly we are trashing the environment. But being ‘only human’ we want something with a bit of style. The American car collector and chat show host, Jay Leno is a great fan of a designer called Randy Grubb. This is a picture of Randy’s Decopod scooter. My plan is you are given one of these fabulous Dan Dare looking scooters by the state when you are 18 and that’s it. If you want anything with a roof or that takes two or more people, you take a bus or a train on the new super countrywide national transport service. Otherwise you walk. Game over. All Britain’s congestion problems - gone. All emission problems - gone. All factories churning out Decopods as fast as they can. Hang on, this is beginning to sound a bit political. I was trying to stay off politics, I’ll leave that to Stef Mo. He’s much more amusing on page 20. Cover pic: Red Priest, Church Stretton Arts Festival, 8 August

cinema MEN AND CHICKEN (15) Mads Mikkelson, barely recognisable as the chisel-jawed hero of THE HUNT plays Elias, dimwitted, sex-starved brother of a rather differently troubled academic Gabriel (David Denck) who, following their dad’s death, discover that he’s not their biological father. So off they go to a barely inhabited island where they believe their real father, who sired them by different women, still lives. But what they discover is a crumbling sanitarium where three further brothers live a feral existence alongside various barely domesticated animals but not, it seems, their male maker. The ensuing, often hilarious progression to a somewhat shocking climax, finds writer/director Anders Thomas Jensen (THE DUCHESS) and regular collaborators, including Mikkelsen, Nikolaj Lie Klaas (t.v’s FOLLOW THE MONEY) and Soren Malling (A WAR) also playing wildly against type, clearly having a ball. THE WAIT (Cert TBA) A young Parisian beauty, Jeanne (Lou de Laâge, BREATHE) ar r iv es in I t aly t o visit an estranged boyfriend who fails to meet her at the airport. A call to his mother, Anna (Juliette Binoche) elicits no more than a vague excuse for his absence although in fact he has just died in an accident. Peiro Messina’s debut feature – he was assistant director on Sorrentino’s luminous THE GREAT BEAUTY, and it shows – then explores a relationship between the two women that’s based on a mutual deceit but also on a curious blend of tentative friendship and emotional dependence. As with Binoche’s similarly unsettled character in THE CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA, the lush surroundings of Anna’s family villa and the Sicilian countryside provide the perfect backdrop for the quietly intense central performances.

JASON BOURNE (Cert TBA) After 2007’s THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, Matt Damon admitted that “I feel like the story has now been told. I love the character, and if (writer/ director) Paul Greengrass calls me in ten years and says, I have a way to bring him back,’ then there’s a world in which I can go, ‘Yeah, absolutely.’” Well it didn’t take that long and despite Jeremy Renner as a credible Bourne-alike in LEGACY, Greengrass and Damon are back with the sleeper secret agent’s memory intact and none too happy about how the CIA treated him. Julia Stiles also returns as ex-CIA confidante Nicky Parsons, with newcomers Alicia Vikander (THE DANISH GIRL), CIA big-wig Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassell as a hitman hired to eliminate our hero all adding spice to a riveting plot.

tales from the city
Everything is Broken
H
I COUNTRY. City here. Not sure if this news has reached you guys yet – I learned about Morse code lag in school but I think I was too busy sucking the ink out of my biro and enjoying the accompanying visions to actually take any of the information in – but everything is broken. Somebody put a brick through politics (well, actually, technically politics put a brick through itself, demonstrating more agility than previously thought physically possible). The environment has been flogged – in its entirety – to aggrocultural corporate bio behemoth Monsanto, who will reportedly employ staff on zero hours contracts to systematically cover it in a new breed of glyphosphate weedkiller that vaporises any organic matter on contact. Frustratingly, 90 per cent of the money raised from the sale of the environment was lost when the pound recently passed into negative worth (in effect reaching a point where having no pounds was worth more than having some pounds); the other 10 per cent was only saved by some last-minute jiggery-pokery by Mark Carney, but it’s already been ring-fenced so it can pay for a full makeover for Larry the Downing Street Cat. Additionally, the United Kingdom has voted unanimously to leave the United Kingdom, citing irreconcilable differences with itself. The United Kingdom wishes itself the best but says it simply cannot envision working with, as or otherwise alongside the United Kingdom for one second longer. Unfortunately, the process of self-divorce will take a minimum of three decades, and those three decades only begin when Theresa May finds the starter pistol that David Cameron hid somewhere in the Houses of Parliament. And Conservative Party sources inform me that Theresa has always been rubbish at Easter Egg hunts. She prefers the game where you put a Rizla on your head with the name of a celebrity written on it – apparently she once correctly guessed “Keith Chegwin” in just three goes. Speaking of new prime ministers, we have a new prime minister. But nobody really cares because we’re all too busy watching the Labour Party hysterically dismantling itself and hurling the bits into the sea. Currently, Her Majesty’s official opposition is the automated answerphone message at Labour HQ. I did reach out to Jeremy Corbyn for comment for the purposes of this column, but was informed that in the new politics, it’s frowned upon to comment on stuff.
20
Unsurprisingly, the Conservative Party has been somewhat put out that its own machinations have received comparatively few column inches, while the ongoing simultaneously slow motion and 4x speeded-up self-immolation of the Labour Party has
already inspired a five-volume encyclopedia series, four thousand hours of documentaries, ninety-eight top trending hashtags and a one-man show by a performance poet who should really be thinking about getting a proper job at this point. Conspiracy-minded quinoa-scoffing liberal lefty types will no doubt lay the blame for this at the feet of a supine mainstream media controlled by a cabal of terrifying psychopathic billionaires, but it might simply be that in a world seemingly defined by brutal cruelty, it’s refreshing to watch a political party self-destruct through brazen incompetence, rather than through slick, stagemanaged backstabbing. Say what you like about deadeyed living Dorian Grey painting Tony Blair, but… um, sorry, lost my thread. Yeah, say what you like about him, I guess. So to redress the imbalance in political reporting, here are those new Conservative Party cabinet appointments in full – CGI mother figure Andrea Leadsom has been appointed Minister of Pokemon Go, unconvincing Boris Johnson lookalike Boris Johnson has been appointed Minister of Being Left On a Park Bench in a Carrier Bag, Jeremy Hunt has been given the newly created post of Minister of Standing Behind You Right Now (Don’t Look), disgraced former defence secretary Dr Liam Fox has been appointed Minister of Death Stars, and Barry from Eastenders once again went home disappointed but was encouraged to come back and try again next year, if there is a next year. Where do we go from here? The onyx black nihilism that is in many ways a prerequisite for surviving in the city suggests that we should just keep staring grimly into the void until either we or the void blinks. The optimism that rightfully should have been the first casualty of entering the Age of Oh God Seriously Can’t the News Just Take a Day Off Or Something suggests that we should cling to those things that make us what we are – our principles, our loved ones, our mildly amusing Star Wars T-shirts – and take it one step at a time from there. Then you read the latest climate change science, or catch up on what’s been happening with Russia and NATO and nuclear submarines, and think maybe those beardy guys who stockpile tinned goods in heavily fortified underground bunkers maybe aren’t so crazy after all. In conclusion, Earth is a land of contrasts. Stefan Mohamed Stefan Mohamed is an author, poet and semifunctional human living in Bristol. His novels Bitter Sixteen and Ace of Spiders are out now from Salt Publishing, and his debut poetry collection PANIC! is out now from Burning Eye Books.
