The President’s Papers W E were in this cafe in Fishguard so that John could have a bacon sandwich and a side order of twizzle chips (!!!) when my eye was caught by the cover of the Daily Mail. Now I thought that horrid editor, Paul Dacre had retired, but apparently not. It transpires he doesn’t actually leave till November. Anyway the cover reads ‘THE POMP AND THE PYGMY’ which is rather unfortunate since it features a picture of the Queen looking about 3ft 6in next to Donald and Melania who both resemble massive waxwork dolls. But no, the pygmy is poor old Jezzer as the Mail informs us. ‘In Windsor the US President meets the Queen. In London Corbyn’s rent-a-Lefties Shame Britain’.

There then follows after a brief excursion to let us know that Ewan McGregor’s daughter thinks her father’s lover is a ‘piece of trash’, 13 pages of pictures, comment and articles about Donald and how rude he was to Theresa May and how he loves Boris Johnson and how Melania ‘high-fived’ a Chelsea Pensioner ending up with an article by Stephen Glover headlined ‘He’s dreadful but how exhilarating to have a leader who understands the yearnings of the British People’ (!!!)

I found the whole thing so unpleasant that I subsequently went out and bought a copy myself just so I could share it with you. What an idiot I am. Still never mind, we had a nice time in Fishguard playing at a converted Church Hall called Ffwrn. As I understand it the people who run it wanted to make it a venue for music, comedy, exhibitions etc. However they had trouble getting a licence so they decided to make it into a bakery instead. They installed a massive wood-fired oven down one end of the hall and started baking bread. That was a few years ago and now they have a wood-fired bakery with a bar, a stage and a regular schedule of great music The Bakery in full swing, oven in the background events. Brilliant.

The next night we were playing at a wedding in a very recently cleared out cow barn near Abergavenny. Despite being full of cow extcrement only a few days before, the barn smelled fine. But it did bring back memories of previous barn dances that were not so sweet. There was one particular Barn Dance, just outside Presteigne where we turned up and our drummer at the time, who shall be nameless, took one good look around the barn, one deep breath and declared ‘This barn smells like shit and I’m not playing in a place that smells like shit’. He disappeared down the lane and never played with us again. Over the next few years we managed to lose quite a few drummers under peculiar circumstances. There was the one who quit over the train business. We had written a sort of musical tribute to the last train to leave Presteigne Station in 1962 to be performed at Sheep Music. I had the (I thought) rather good idea that the band should all dress as steam engineers, but had failed to obtain a set of matching overalls. I had therefore substituted those cheap paper, painter’s overalls in gleaming white. There was a lot of argy-bargy trying to get everyone to wear the offending garments and in the case of the drummer it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. He never came back. Then of course there was Terry. Terry came to us with impeccable credentials having been the drummer with that really great 70’s funk band, Kokomo and also having been the session drummer on Marianne Faithfull’s seminal 80’s album ‘Broken English’. At the time we met him he was down on his luck and living in a caravan on a very dodgy site run by a villain just outside Llandod. Despite his impressive CV, Terry did have a tendency to get excited and start to speed up but that wasn’t the cause of his leaving. We were booked to play at a rather posh venue in Gloucestershire. As we got close to the venue I spotted Terry in his car going the opposite way. We got to the gig and set up, but no sign of Terry. We tried to phone, but no answer and we were forced to play the gig without a drummer which went down like a lead balloon with the promoter. Terry subsequently claimed he’d never been near the gig but I’m pretty sure he’d got there before us, didn’t like what he saw, scarpered and left us in the lurch. What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend? - Homeless. Cover pic: Navarra Quartet, Presteigne Festival 25 August.

architecture There’s nothing very super about this Super Surgery

T

HE Hay Literary Festival has changed a lot over the years. This year’s 11-day Book Bash was noticeable for the absence of stellar personalities like Bill Clinton and Desmond Tutu, who once commanded huge fees and luxury hotel accommodation. Sadly, prices of the festival’s third-rate fast food and miniscule quantities of booze (£6.50 for a miniature bottle of Oz white) have gone through the tented roofs. I will travel a long way to hear Simon Jenkins. The man talks and writes a lot of sense and his love of good architecture is second-to-none. Ex-Editor of both The Times and the Evening Standard, and a former Chairman of the National Trust ain’t too shabby on any cv! His erudite dissertation at Hay this year was about Britain’s 100 best railway stations (linked to his recent book). According to Jenkins, there are just over 2600 surviving structures from the great railway revolution. Until the appalling Chris Grayling’s recent emasculation of most train timetables, Britain’s railways had been enjoying a quiet renaissance. Hereford’s daily passenger usage exceeds all other stations in the region. Two stylish local edifices, both by the Victorian railway architect Thomas Penson, were singled out for Jenkins’ praise: Shrewsbury’s castle-like terminus (1848) and Hereford’s Tudor Gothic extravaganza of 1853. After Hereford Cathedral, this is probably the city’s most prized listed building. Following the completion of the city’s controversial £34-million Link Road, it is enjoying an untrammelled setting for the first time in decades. But not for long. A major planning application by a Worcester-based health care provider is due to be considered this month by Herefordshire Council’s planning committee. This is the so-called Super Surgery, a rather garish £6 million box-like structure, sited perilously close to the city’s Grade II-listed station. The patients of the five existing city surgeries to be decanted into the new 2990sq m Hereford Medical Centre will create a

The new medical facility will handle almost 33,000 patients

combined patient roll call of almost 33,000. A great opportunity, one would have thought, for a cutting-edge building, like Jamieson Associates’ graceful Sophie House residential care home at Hampton Park, for the Martha Trust. But the design of the Hereford building possesses all the architectural élan of an Azerbaijani sorting office. Or as one local wag (posting on Hereford Voice) put it: “It’s a form of euthanasia – if you are poorly when you arrive at this building you’ll just get a whole lot worse!” But there’s a double-whammy architectural body blow. The giant Shoe Box’s land grab looks like putting paid to any hope of Hereford getting its longpromised Transport Hub. This pan-European concept of an interchange seamlessly dovetailing together all transport modes (train, bus, taxi, cycle) has been championed by local public transport pressure group Rail & Bus for Herefordshire for at least 10 years. For some extraordinary reason, RBfH wasn’t even invited to comment on the Shoe Box. I’m sure Simon Jenkins wouldn’t approve. Nick Jones

cinema MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT (12A) A huge guilty pleasure, the MI franchise never fails to deliver a frantic succession of seat-edging thrills with the emphasis on the ‘impossible’, if not the ‘preposterous’. Working again with Chris McQuarrie who helmed the last episode, Rogue Nation, as well as his Jack Reacher, the unfeasibly youthful looking 56 year-old Tom Cruise ‘s Ethan Hunt here has to stop madman Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) from wreaking nuclear Armageddon which inevitably requires scaling sheer rock-faces, racing motorcycles sans helmet through teeming city centres and hanging from ‘planes by his fingernails. Thing is, McQuarrie and his massive team – there are over 100 credited stunt persons and half of Silicon Valley apparently worked on the special effects – it’s all done with great elan and the Ethan’s usual back-uppers played by Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson and Michele Monaghan ably assist in providing added zing, if not plausibility. All reveiws by Mark Williams

Written, directed and starring Rupert Everett, this Oscar Wilde bio-pic is very obviously a labour-of-love and there are times when what is essentially the literary icon’s fall from grace could use a little more back-story, certainly for audiences who only know of him as a sardonic fop. However Everett portrays his hero as both assured of his talents yet suffused with self-doubt and aware that his homosexuality will prove his undoing, ¬ which of course it does. Beginning after his release from incarceration for gross indecency, Wilde embarks on a booze-addled descent into oblivion aided by ill-advised sexual dalliances, largely despite the efforts of his few remaining friends played by Colin Firth and Edwin Thomas to support and rehabilitate him. However grim this may sound on paper, there’s much Wildean wit to savour here, and the recreations of late 19th century bohemia are as affecting as the central performances.

ULTURES circling an old country pub that has been brought to its knees like a buffalo starving in a drought is an ugly and sadly common sight these days. Mr Pernickety has often tried to alert his readers to the tragedy of greedy property speculators homing in on former pubs to strip their assets, fill their gardens with executive-style housing and deprive yet another village of a community gathering place. The owner of the former ‘Boot’ in Orleton, Charles Collier (or one of his nominees), is attempting to sell the building and grounds for development, thereby destroying one of the most charming pubs in Herefordshire. A trio, Paul and Rowena Williams and their exconvict partner, Keith Partridge, have been responsible for the closure of the Knighton Hotel, The Radnorshire Arms in Presteigne, and the former Compasses (re named the Castle) in Wigmore, among, it seems, several other important listed buildings across Wales. Right under the noses off unsuspecting residents, the Williams’s have also managed to extract large refurbishment grants (never used for the purpose) from gullible administrators of Welsh Government funds. Mr Pernickety became aware of a strong odour of rodent that pervaded the once lovely old Radnorshire Arms when he visited to review it for the Woolly Organ in July 2016. It was clear then that the place was being operated by people who didn’t give a damn about the building or anyone who used it. On the face of it, it’s not obvious why the Williams’s kept buying these places, other than the fact that - encumbered by a specific planning use as pubs - they were very cheap pieces of real estate, easily inflatable for dodgy loan-raising purposes. People like the Williams’s should be shunned, disparaged, investigated and, where appropriate, charged for their dishonest use of government funds. Mr P is grateful to jacothenorth.net/blog/weepforwales/ for much of the information here. In the meantime, the quest for the finer eating houses on the Welsh Riviera continues. July in Pembrokeshire produced for Mr Pernickety no seals, no puffins, no acres of rippling pink thrift; no stooping falcons nor chuffin’ choughs; just relentless, blazing sunshine, and a few deadline-free hours in which to wallow in the warm, pale violet prose of the late Patrick Leigh-Fermor – essayist and unreliable witness to distant youthful fantasies. Leigh-Fermor is a performer whose erudition makes sensitive readers feel inadequate and ashamed of their ignorance, but then, as Mr P often thinks, a little humility is always good for the soul.

22

Mr P felt shamefully ignorant, too, when confronted with a restaurant in St David’s called cwtch* (yes, no capital letter and an asterisk) whose etymology he couldn’t place. It seems that ‘cwtch’ is the welsh equivalent of the equally undefinable Danish ‘hygge’, which means something sort of soft and cuddly. So there you are.

Mr P, always ready to spot an arcane connection, recalled years ago a gallic galette joint in the King’s Road, Chelsea called Asterix; he hoped he wasn’t walking into another Celtic savoury pancakery. The interior of cwtch* didn’t promise a great deal. There were alarming numbers of hearts stuck about the place – on the menu, on pale beige metal accoutrements, candle holders and whatnot – such as you find in the exit passage at Ikea, and all to a soundtrack of mundane pop. A bookcase full of books – not real books, just cookery ones – attempted a nod at erudition. The other punters were clad in the dreary sameness of the English on holiday – long shorts, fatuous t-shirts and hoodies. Mr P doesn’t imagine any restaurant has the courage to impose a dress code in these egalitarian times; but what is the point, Mr P wonders, of trying to chic up your restaurant if you then allow it to be stuffed with drab, colourless diners? But there was the food to consider: Mr P’s lovely companion headed for the Smoked Haddock and Prawn Tartlet – it was light, crispy, subtle but distinctive, with an aioli that made her beam with pleasure. Her issue, the sois-disant Human Vacuum Cleaner, chose Dill-Cured Mackerel Fillet with pickled cucumber and a delicious beetroot mousse. Mr P helped himself and nodded with unqualified approval. His own choice of Braised Pork Belly with pistachio crumb, caper and raisin chutney, offered lovely strong flavours to contrast with the tang of the pork fat. For his main course, Mr P found only pleasure in his Duo of Rose Veal – fried rump, veal sausage meat and cabbage parcel, pointed up with a cream marsala sauce. The HVC hoovered up his Duo of lamb (plus smoked pancetta creamed cabbage, redcurrant and rosemary jus) with a gleeful smacking of lips, while the LC praised her Fillet of Monkfish, and especially liked the fine string potato fries that came with it, all on a bed of tomato cream sauce. Somebody ordered a Chocolate Mousse with Brownie, which all the party loved. Thus, despite the not-too-serious shortcomings in the ambience of the restaurant, every dish they’d been served was special, individual and gretaly enjoyable, which more than made up for the flat drabness of the other diners. www.misterpernickety.com

Classical Chat ‘St Andrew’s Church, Presteigne, Powys’. As deputy editor of a trade magazine for the UK’s classical music profession, I found myself writing that venue address over and over again each year when compiling listings of premiere performances in August. In the course of a few days over the summer bank holiday weekend Presteigne Festival programmes an extraordinary amount of new music, sometimes including more world premieres than the seven-week BBC Proms season. The festival was not the only magnet that drew my husband and me to Radnorshire when we were planning our move out of London nearly a decade ago, but it was certainly the deciding factor – though we had never actually attended until we lived here. Our first festival did not disappoint, featuring wonderful music in beautiful venues, stimulating talks, inspiring exhibitions, a superb education project involving primary schoolchildren from both sides of the border in a musical exploration of local landscapes such as Stapleton Castle and Pilleth battlefield, and a lively social scene. The memory of concert pianist Tom Poster jamming with local singer/ guitarist Dave Luke in the wine bar late one festival night is particularly vivid! One of the things that makes this festival so special is the Festival Orchestra, recruited and conducted by the event’s artistic director George Vass. Most of these young players are actually on holiday from their day jobs as members of the country’s leading symphony orchestras. They choose to come to Presteigne, stay in the spare rooms of residents like us and spend most of their fees on food and drink in the local shops and hostelries, because they love the music and the camaraderie. A different string quartet is resident at the festival each year, together with a group of top notch soloists – usually a male and a female singer, a violinist, a cellist, a couple of wind or brass players and two pianists – and a choir. St Andrew’s Church in the heart of Presteigne is the venue for the main evening concerts, but many of the daytime and late night recitals take place in surrounding villages. Listening to a violin duo playing in ancient Kinnerton Church on a sunny Saturday morning or walking up the hill to Discoed in the dark to hear a solo cellist playing late-night Bach are magical experiences. So what’s in store for us at this year’s festival, which runs from 23-28 August?

24

A highlight is sure to be the opening event, the Welsh premiere of a new chamber opera, ‘Juliana’, by Joseph Phibbs. I loved his orchestral work ‘Memento Musica’, premiered by the Philharmonia at the Gloucester Three Choirs Festival in 2016. The cast of three singers includes the outstanding young mezzo-soprano Rebecca Afonwy-Jones, who has strong local connections. Anyone who heard her Presteigne Festival recital last year will agree that she is a very special performer. The libretto by Laurie Slade transplants August Strindberg’s 1899

Musicians from the Presteigne Festival Orchestra warm up for a concert outside St Andrew’s Church

play ‘Miss Julie’ to a contemporary Swedish setting, confronting a number of topical issues head-on: the divide between rich and poor, immigration, and the transgression of class, social and sexual boundaries. Whereas other music festivals this year are marking the centenaries of the deaths of Parry (of ‘Jerusalem’ fame) and Debussy and the birth of Leonard Bernstein Presteigne typically goes its own way with a Baltic theme running through the programme, celebrating one hundred years since Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania became independent republics. If you only come to one concert I would suggest Friday evening’s ‘Lonely Angel’, which features two haunting works by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, his ‘Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten’ and the unforgettable ‘Fratres’. (Though I should add that reserved seats for this concert were almost sold out at the time of writing.) As ever, the festival also includes lots of new music by British composers. The Choir of Royal Holloway, University of London, will premiere ‘Regina Coeli’ by David Bednall, currently one of the UK’s most acclaimed composers of church music, at the festival service in St Andrew’s on Sunday morning (to which all are welcome) with a reprise in concert the following evening. Pianist Joseph Tong will premiere ‘The Gate of Dawn’ by Cydonie Banting in his Friday afternoon recital and there is a new work by this year’s composer in residence Martin Butler in the festival finale. Panel discussions in the Assembly Rooms set most of the concerts in context and help to introduce the music. The repertoire may be unfamiliar to many people – though you will find the occasional piece by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert or Sibelius scattered throughout the programme – but most of it is not particularly avant-garde or experimental. We are very fortunate to have an event like this in the Marches – if you have never been to the Presteigne Festival before, why not give it a go this year? www.presteignefestival.com Clair de Lune

grass roots Hot Town - Not a Shadow in the City! I

N June and July, as the heat wave set in, my mind often went back to Leo Colston, the 12-year-old boy making the daily thermometer readings which set up the steamy mood of foreboding in L.P. Hartley’s novel, The Go-Between. “I was not unduly dismayed by the heat…for I still half believed in my ability to influence the weather… But like an invalid whose fever defies the doctor, the weather did not respond…and next day…the thermometer had climbed to nearly eighty-five and was still pushing up the marker.” When extreme weather strikes, it’s hard not to blame man-made climate change. During long weeks of sunshine in June, Porthmadog in Gwynedd broke this year’s UK heat record with a temperature of 33 degrees C. And, Radnorshire, where I live, often seemed to be the hottest spot in Britain. While Britain’s hot weather persisted into July, I learned that it wasn’t exactly cool and breezy in Algeria. On July 6 the town of Ouargla, in the Sahara, registered the hottest temperature ever reliably recorded in Africa, 51.3 degrees C. Since the late 19th century, countries in northwest Africa have produced many claims of temperatures close to, or even above, 50 C. One or two of them come from Tindouf, in southern Algeria. They caught my eye because I once fetched up there to meet some Saharan rebels who were at war with Morocco. I stayed in “the Tindouf Hilton”. It wasn’t an hotel, still less a Hilton, but the ironic name given by our camera crew to a tin shack with no running water. It seems that Tindouf’s ways of measuring temperatures in the past may at times have been only slightly better than the plumbing in that hut. Historic heat “records” relating to Tindouf are among a number across Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, and Mali which have been struck out by the World Meteorological Organisation. They were outliers with no scientific credibility. In some cases the instrumentation came nowhere near meeting modern standards. In others there was finger trouble or maybe eye trouble, with a high of 45.2 C at Ghadames in Libya in 1975 being wrongly recorded as 54.2 C. But climate change is not just making weather warmer. It is also amplifying the strength of the biggest storms, say meteorologists. Finding out how much more violent tropical storms are becoming has taken time. But some results are in. The authors of a report in Nature Geoscience in 2016 concluded that typhoons hitting east and southeast Asia had become 12% to 15% more intense over a period of 40 years from the late 1970s. And,

46

Typhoon Maria

remarkably, they found that the number of storms in the highest categories, 4 and 5, had doubled or tripled. The typhoon which wrought havoc in Japan in July may well be a case in point. Typhoon Maria was by chance given the same name as the Atlantic hurricane which brought death and destruction to Puerto Rico in 2017. The official death toll there was 64. But a recent Harvard University study suggests that up to 4,600 people may have died. Last month Typhoon Maria - in the Pacific - reached category 5 and in just ten days it brought about four normal months’ worth of rainfall to much of Japan. It left around 200 people confirmed dead, with dozens more missing. Rainfall records were broken. The images of destruction, as homes and cars were swept away, were of a severity that we in Europe just don’t associate with Japan. As with the other Maria, in the Caribbean last year, the true total of dead is likely to be much higher than the official figure. One weather official told the BBC that Japan had never suffered such rain before. In the long term, extreme weather such as the world has just seen is likely to be correlated with rising greenhouse gas emissions. For three years up to 2017 some scientists thought that those had reached a plateau. The Global Carbon Project had found virtually no yearly rise in carbon dioxide output in that time. But last November new data showed greenhouse gases shooting up again, and the biggest ever increase in one year. It’s worth remembering that the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which gave rise to some heady optimism at the time, does not even come into force until 2020. In the battle to curb climate change, not only are we not yet turning the corner, we may well be getting further away from success. Julian O’Halloran
