Pigeon Poo I
WAS appalled last week when one of Broad Sheep’s ex-contributors made a scathing comment about my editorials. The gentleman had the temerity to suggest that, alongside the weighty articles on the morality of the First World War and the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions as reported by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, snaps of myself on holiday in Corsica lacked a certain gravitas. He even suggested that Pernickety’s observations of derivative furniture and gloopy tomato sauce had more weight than my own (very exciting) battles with French hotel owners. I have taken these criticisms to heart and as a result this month, rather than the light-hearted banter you have come to expect from me I intend to pen a serious column that will fearlessly take on the issues of the day. To this end I have purchased (with my own money) not one, but two of the current, high quality local papers. Not just the Hereford Times but also the legendary Mid-Wales Journal and I shall pick out a couple of the major stories of the week and give you the benefit of my years of experience and wisdom on the articles in question. All the stories have been pulled from the first two pages of the papers so I figure they must be quite important. 1. We start on page 2 of the Hereford Times with an intriguing story from Ross-on-Wye. Geof Lodge (who can’t seem to spell his own first name), spoke at the Town Council meeting about the problems of Wilton Road. Apparently a gang of hoodlum pigeons have taken to gathering on a wall opposite the ‘Man of Ross’ pub and doing what pigeons the world over do after a hearty meal of left over chips. Mr Lodge has offered £2500 of his own money to solve the pigeon poo problem. Mr Kirkham-Sandy said that a falconry company he spoke to suggested trapping and shooting the pigeons plus covering their breeding holes with chicken wire. Councillor Mayo proposed that they bite Geof’s hand off, grab the two-and-a-half grand and set up an annual pigeon killing budget of £2000 per annum. This was supported by the Council. PETE SAYS 4500 quid will buy you an awful lot of bird seed. Find a suitable site on the edge of town where the pigeon poo won’t worry Mr Lodge and Councillor Kirkham-Sandy and let the pigeons stuff themselves. 2. We switch to the Mid-Wales Journal for our second story. Powys County Council has performed a U-turn on their school children’s Christmas Dinner policy. Apparently the traditional festive dinner was about to be binned in favour of pizza and sandwiches as part of a cost-cutting plan. 6000 people signed a petition within days, calling for the traditional dinner to be restored. The dinner has now been restored but instead of the council paying for it, parents will now have to chip in £3 each. (Ha ha, that’ll teach ‘em).
PETE SAYS All kids hate school dinners, give ‘em £3 and send them down the chippy. That Jamie Oliver has a lot to answer for.
3. The second story from page 2 of the Hereford Times is completely incomprehensible. Perhaps you lot can understand it. Councillors banned the press and public from a meeting this week. The meeting of Hereford Council was to discuss dozens of complaints about elected member’s bad behaviour! Monitoring officer, Claire Ward said the reason the press and public were excluded is ‘Because it identifies individuals’. “A number of the complaints, because of the sampling that has been requested, contains rejected complaints where the subject members do not even know these complaints have been made, and also it contains third party data”. But Councillor Chris Chappell came back with”I take on board the substance of what you are saying but everybody knows that nobody keeps anything quiet here”. “And I suspect the complainant has said in the pub ‘I reported so and so and nothing happened’” “And probably you’ve been damned as well for making that decision”. PETE SAYS !!!? me neither. 4. The final story from the Mid-Wales Journal concerns a planning application for nine Hobbit homes near Rhayader. They are underground, cylindrical homes formed of recycled waste plastic with a twin wall structure. They all have two bedrooms. The Mid-Wales Journal helpfully adds that Hobbits are the heroes of J.R.R. Tolkein’s book ‘The Hobbit’ and are half the size of human beings. PETE SAYS I think I’ll go back to reading The Beano! Pale Blue Solstice, Everybody! I T is all too easy at this time of year to cause offence. The festive season is upon us. Carols are being practised. In non-Christian households Saturnalia costumes are being purged of those weird stains that turned up last year when someone filled the hot tub with Argentinian claret, and the Druidic robes are being rinsed in the ritual smoke of mistletoe stalks and Golden Virginia. The mind, in short, rocks on its moorings like a small molar in a big socket. And into the gap can leap demons to gibber and mock and stink of brimstone and, well, cause offence. Of course in this enlightened age it is second nature not to commit cultural floaters like offering a Saturnaliac a drink of water, or sacrificing a non-virgin on a Druid altar stone. Language, however, is a problem. Whoops, there I go. Language, however, is an issue. It can be a bloody hard problem, whoops, quite a challenging issue. In the course of an argument, whoops, meaningful discussion, you might be calling some idiot an idiot, whoops, person of restricted intellectual growth, and they might say who are you calling an idiot, whoops, your assertions are problematic and if you do not leave the snug bar without delay Harold the landlord is going to show you the narrow edge of his cricket bat, whoops, no-platform you with extreme prejudice. Thank goodness hate speech, which is defined as any speech the speakee doesn’t like, is now against the law. But remember, fellow citizennes, Yule is a busy time for the constabulary, so think before you dial. If in an upper room little Johnny refuses to play with little Kylie’s Barbie and says so, he is engaging in misogynistic speech. This is illegal, and any parent worth her salt is going to get on the blower to Plod without delay. But ask yourself, is this the true spirit of Yuletide, Saturnalia, Alban Arthuan and Darksolstice? Furthermore it is happening up a dangerous flight of stairs which may cause, whoops, give rise to, Health and Safety cockups, whoops, situations. Call the Fire Brigade instead. They love to get out and about, particularly when it is snowing, and at this time of year the house is likely to be on fire anyway.
6
Yes, Plod has plenty to do, so spare her. A little thought will demonstrate that Hate Speech is easily neutralised. The traditional way of doing this is to use a a single adjective or phrase, which in the case of the British bourgeoisie has been the word ‘nice’. Originally meaning ‘correctly made’, ‘nice’ became a portmanteau of meaninglessness. A nice cup of tea was nice whether it was the true fragrant Oolong or a stagnant pool with a greasy teabag in it. A nice knife in the ribs was really not all that nice. Now, however, clever-clever university types have turned ‘nice’ into a word pregnant with satire, which will breed little imps of offence calculated to prod the sensitive with red-hot tridents of rage (please stop this - ed). It is time to choose another portmanteau phrase to take the place of ‘nice’. Try ‘pale blue’. ‘Get your pale blue arse out of here, you pale blue pale blue thing,’ you could say. Or, ‘Would you like a pale blue cup of tea?’ The answer to both of the above is likely to be ‘No,’ but ‘No’ implies rejection. It is therefore important only ever to say ‘Yes.’ This of course may lead to misunderstandings. Here is an example: ‘Would you care for a pale blue drink?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Shall we nip up to my pale blue room?’ ‘Yes. Get your pale blue hands off me.’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Can it be that you were only saying “Yes” because it is Hate Speech and therefore illegal to say “Yes,” by which I of course mean (gulp) “No”?’ You see? Oh for God’s pale blue sake. Enough already. What it boils down to is that it is important to be clear when writing Christmas cards. Happy Christmas and Cheery New Year may be illegal. But it reaches the place that Happy Holidays and Only 250 Days to Diwali leave totally unmarked. To hell with rightspeak and doublethink. Bugger off, politespeakers. Mine’s a whisky mac. Whaddayamean, that’s four units in a single glass? Pathetic. Make it a pale blue double. Llywelyn ap Pylyefrafdwr
Letters You might well get quite a lot of reaction to Ian Marchant’s piece. My reaction is HEAR FUCKING HEAR!! Both my Granddads were wounded in the First World War. One of them died after 18 years of painful lung disease after being gassed. My mum was nine, so our family suffered, though not as much as many. The nostalgia increasingly creeping into this Remembrance stuff is sickening and scary. There’s always been a strong element of justification of war in it all. To me it feels like it’s getting worse. There’s a memorial in the park in Accrington, Lancashire, near where I used to live. There are hundreds of names on it, all local. They all died on the same day, they were all between 17 and 21 years old. The jingoism that led to that is on its way back, guys. Good on Ian for what he wrote. Jim Gaffney, Bishops Castle. Walkers Meadow Presteigne Hi, While holidaying in Rouen at the “Camping” (5€ a night) recently I was shocked to receive a text from my mother that my great uncle Albert Grimble was buried in the St Severs Cemetery in the City. His young soul was presumably evacuated to one of the many hospitals behind the lines in Rouen where he died 101 years ago. I was shocked because I was partially raised by my grandmother Eileen Grimble when my parents were in Africa and she had never spoken of him; although we spent considerable time together. That silence is of a great grief that had wrapped him as it wrapped so many other memories so very hard to bear. I am minded that the war was a Holocaust; that is witnessed at the long lists of the young men who died on every village memorial up and down this land. It is now known that trauma is transmitted in DNA and I am not sure that as a nation we have properly addressed this grief; certainly I wept at the grave of an uncle I never knew existed as the silence was so suddenly broken. The only way to reference this slaughter was to proclaim it the War to End All Wars. This is to be honoured and perhaps it is best also to continue remembering the struggles for peace ie that it was mass strikes in the Pas de Calais in 1919 of still enlisted soldiers in camps 50,000 strong who rejected their officers and elected “leaders” to prevent Churchill sending them to Russia to fight the Reds on behalf of the Czar but also that the 1920’s and 30’s were tumultuous years that led to even greater horrors in the 1940’s and it was mistakes in the 20’s and 30’s that led to the rise of Hitler and other European fascisms. Is it not therefore important to continue remembering and witnessing the lessons of past times as the post 1945 order seems to be re arranging Europe from a vision of peaceful unity and co existence to the re-emergence of the nation state rivalries that led to such horrors that has marred Europe repeatedly over the centuries? And if only Tony Blair had read The Seven Pillars of Wisdom by TE Lawrence and the arrival of his army in Damascus in 1918 would he have ever sanctioned British forces again East of Suez? We have to keep honestly remembering; only the pity of war. Sincerely Peter Hack

cinema PETERLOO (12A) As even our local indie cinemas plunge headlong into well-meant Christmas hokum there’s still some syrup-free fare available for more jaded palates and no more so than Mike Leigh’s latest, Peterloo. Book-ended by two spectacular battle sequences, it opens as cinematographer Dick Pope’s cameras swoop and whirl through the carnage of Napoleon’s defeat 1815 at Waterloo. Stumbling through the corpses and smoking debris, shell-shocked young British conscript Joseph (David Moorst) begins the long trudge back home to Manchester where his parents (Maxine Peake and Pierce Quigley) have joined the movement for better working conditions in the cotton mills. This eventually leads to the brutal massacre of unarmed protesters in St. Peter’s Field which christens the film. Leigh’s most epic work yet is still suffused with his trademark leftist humanity with a standout performance from Rory Kinnear as a progressive landowner who rallies to the people’s cause. THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST (15)
One American reviewer rather waspishly cited this as ‘easily the best film about a teenage lesbian compelled to go to a Christian conversion camp since 1999’s But I’m A Cheerleader’ and although that essentially sums up the plot, writer/director Desiree Akhavan – following up her earlier teenage lesbian comic drama, the beguilingly entertaining Appropriate Behaviour – infuses this tale with great humour and an often heart-wrenching sense of injustice. The titular Cameron Post (Chlöe Grace Moretz) is an orphaned teenager who caught in flagrante with her best pal, Coley (Quinn Shepherd) is sent to a bizarre homosexual ‘treatment centre’ run by the borderline crazy Dr Marsh (Jennifer Ehle, Zero Dark Thirty) and Akhavan’s film charts the confusion of adolescence and the importance of facing down its challenges within what is essentially an environment of adult prejudice and bullying. 19 Dec THE MUPPETS CHRISTMAS CAROL (U) Clun Memorial Hall 01588 640109 19 Dec THE STAR (U) Dolau Community Hall 07904 883038 21 Dec EARLY MAN (PG) Knighton Community Centre 01547 520602 29 Dec MAMMA MIA! JULIET, NAKED (15)
SAVOY THEATRE, MONMOUTH
Adapted from another of Nick Hornby’s cache of music-themed novels, Juliet, Naked is a rather more subtle deliberation on fanboy obsession than, say, Hi Fidelity, not least because it’s from a woman’s viewpoint. Annie (Rose Byrne) has suffered too long her partner Duncan’s fixation with a faded one-hit wonder, Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke). As played by Chris O’Dowd with his characteristic nervy enthusiasm, it’s easy to understand why Annie should stray from Duncan, but unfortunately the object of her increasingly determined online dalliance is none other than the man-boy Crow. It’s a plot obviously freighted with considerable opportunities for festering grievances and consequent excruciating humour but fortunately director Jesse Peretz, known primarily for his sharp American t.v. series like Girls and Nurse Jackie, handles it with an admirably light touch, aided in no small measure by his sister Evgenia’s knowing script. 26 Jan THE CHILDREN ACT (12A) Playhouse Cinema, Leominster 01568 616460 28 Jan MCQUEEN (15) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 29 Jan THE GREATEST SHOWMAN (PG) Loppington VH 01939 809236

food page The Stockton Cross, Kimbolton
D
ILIGENT readers of the Woolly Organ who can still remember anything will be aware that Mr Pernickety reviewed the Stockton Cross as recently as last February. They might even recall that he described his Sunday lunch there as one of the most atrocious he’d ever eaten. Some of the puff was taken from his damning indictment when he learned very soon afterwards with great relief that the culprits had moved out and the place was getting a change of management and a complete refit. Neither of these are necessarily always a good thing, so Mr P promised then that he would return to reappraise the place, once the new regime had settled in. However before Mr P reports on the new Stockton Cross, he has some truly heartening news to pass on about that exceptionally fine old boozer, The Boot Inn at Orleton. After the desperate attempts of the former owner of The Boot to gain planning permission to turn the pub and its garden into a ghetto of ‘executive-style’ houses in order to save his collapsing property business, the premises fell into the hands of company liquidators, with whom local residents have been able to come to an arrangement to purchase the place and thus continue to run it as a village pub. They have already raised over half of the £300,000 they need to complete the purchase, and urgently need to raise the rest by the first week of December. So important is it that this pub is saved and revived, Mr P has already bought himself a block of 5 shares for £250, and he urges all readers of this page, if they have the wherewithal and consider the retention of authentic rural pubs to be a good thing to do the same by going to: www.thecommunitybootinn.co.uk Mr P and his Lovely Companion arrived at the Stockton Cross for an early dinner on a traditionally quiet Tuesday evening. They immediately sensed a change in the atmosphere of the place, with a warm, genuine greeting from the young woman who, they learned, is half the couple that now run the place. The structural layout of the pub appeared largely unchanged – a long timber-framed space with a flagstone floor and much comforting beamery which retains the air of having sheltered and watered hoary old sons of the soil, sheep minders and cart drivers for many centuries. The innards and furnishings – deeply gloomy on the previous visit – have been given a thorough
26
make-over à la Country Living – French blue paint, soft checks, neat plain tables and coloured chairs, whitewashed walls, friendly wall-brackets – all designed to put people at their ease in surroundings they will recognise from countless stylish advertisements. Although Mr P and the LC like their furnishings with rather more authentic oldness, patina and individuality, they couldn’t cavil at what would please the vast majority of the clientele, beyond remarking that the lights are a little too bright (more candles?), the walls a little too white and the pictures too small and bland. The music being played was intermittent and nondescript, when it was evident at all. No one would object to quiet Bach quartets, for instance, and some would really like it. Besides, any mild irritation Mr P and the LC might have felt about the visual style of the place was easily offset by outstanding and thoughtful service. It was especially elating not to be commanded to ‘Enjoy your meal’ each time a dish was placed on the table by serving staff who were – if Mr P is permitted to say such things in the #metoo era – intelligent and attractive young women. By happy coincidence, the quality of the food they were offered was good too. The LC’s Seared Scallops with a small cube of belly pork and squash purée pleased her very much, and Mr P’s nibble of one of the scallops confirmed her view. His own Whitebait with good Paprika Aioli were crunchy and reasonably fresh, though he felt there were more of them than was necessary for a starter. To follow he had ordered a confit leg and breast of ‘Downton’ duck (though why wildfowl shot at the nearby Downton estate should have any more culinary value than one shot over, say, the Bromfield gravel pits is puzzling, unless the thought of Maggie Smith dabbing fastidious lips as she digests her dinner at the fictional Downton Abbey is intended to add frisson). In any event, the meat and its accoutrements were well cooked, if a fraction oversauced for Mr P’s taste. The LC’s Pan-fried Hake and chorizo risotto made an unusual juxtaposition of tastes which she seemed to be enjoying as Mr P knocked back yet another glass of seductive Puglian Primitivo. They brought their dinner to a good end by sharing a Pistachio Financier with apricot ice-cream, and left feeling that the Stockton Cross was back on its feet again, and well worth a visit. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots Coal burning goes on despite ban on new mines I
T’S starting to look like the end of the line for coal mining in Wales. New planning rules to be agreed by the end of 2018 would likely permit the opening of new coal mines only in “wholly exceptional circumstances.” This was revealed within only a week or two of the report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calling for vigorous worldwide efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C. For climate campaigners, reports signalling the end of new coal mining in Wales were more than welcome. Haf Elgar, of Friends of the Earth Cymru, has said it is important for Wales to be aware of its global responsibility and “make sure that we really do play our part…and reduce our carbon emissions”. Coal mining once employed tens of thousands in Wales alone. But it also ruined the health of many thousands, through lung disease among both miners and the general population. And coal use over two centuries is blamed as the main factor in causing climate change around the world. So, farewell to coal! And, for those whose jobs don’t depend on it, good riddance! But not so fast! Environment campaigners like Haf Elgar will be more aware than most that power is still being generated from coal at Aberthaw power station in Barry. Indeed, last year it was learned that Aberthaw would get a hefty £10 million subsidy from government to keep the turbines running in 2017-18. The government plans that all remaining coal-fired stations in Britain should close by October 2025. But coal is still some way from its last gasp. Across Britain as a whole, the use of coal to generate electricity has dropped steeply in this decade. This has been driven in part by a tax known as Carbon Price Support. Burning coal also causes generators to incur further costs from an EU measure known as the Emissions Trading Scheme. No doubt you can hear the B word coming! When the EU element is added to the UK treasury’s carbon tax, the extra cost of burning a tonne of coal is about £35. This all makes burning coal in power stations about twice as costly as it would be otherwise. These carbon taxes have been a partial cause of renewable power setting new records for electricity generation this year. Indeed in April electric power supplies in the UK ran for three whole days without the need of any coal-fired power generation at all.
58
So how economic will coal-fired power stations be after Brexit? Search me! After reading a new briefing from a top expert at the London School of Economics my short answer is - just like the rest of Brexit - “We still don’t know yet!”
In its role in keeping the lights on, coal’s main competitor is gas. In recent years, as long as gas has been cheaper than coal, the climate has been the beneficiary. That’s because burning coal causes about half as many carbon emissions again as burning gas does. But, in the last year, the price of gas has shot up. So more coal has been burned, despite the burden of the carbon taxes. Clearly this has been bad news for the environment, the climate and our lungs! If you are not sure what to think about burning coal, the US president’s pithy slogan “Trump digs coal!” may help you decide! An energy expert at London’s Imperial College, Dr Iain Staffell, notes that the resurgence of coal is linked to a 15% increase in greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector. “With these coal power stations running instead of more efficient gas plants,” he says, “Britain is producing an extra 1000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every hour.” And, he warns, “…unless Britain’s carbon price can once again make up the gap between coal and gas prices, we risk rolling back some of the world-leading gains made on cleaning up our electricity system.” Is the news on carbon emissions overseas any better? Hardly! Satellite data suggest a German brown coal (lignite) plant and power station in Bergheim may be the worst hotspot for air pollution in Europe. But doesn’t the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement carry hope of a solution? Not yet, says the Paris-based International Energy Agency. Its chief executive, Dr Fatih Birol, has warned that there is a wide gap between the pledges to cut carbon made in Paris three years ago and what countries are actually doing on the ground. Dr Birol has warned that energy consumption is going steadily up, year after year. And, remarkably, three quarters of world energy still comes from fossil fuels – exactly the same proportion as thirty years ago. Julian O’Halloran
