‘Electric Dreams Now’. Soon I

F you read last months Broad Sheep’s editorial, you will know that I put a Hex on BMW’s electric car sharing scheme ‘Drive Now’. Soon after the article was published came the news that ‘Drive Now, London’, the company that had the cheek to refuse my application (on the grounds that I was too old) were to cease trading in February 2020. Take that BMW! Let that be a warning to any other multi-national company that fancies its chances crossing swords with me. However, that has not dimmed my enthusiasm for electric cars and over the next two months I will try and get a go in as many as possible. Hugo Spowers is an ex-racing car designer who studied ecology and these two skills combined to inspire him to consider what the car of the future might look like. Hugo lives a few miles outside Presteigne and over the years I have been mighty impressed by his enthusiasm and conviction that the way forward is to build lightweight vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells and that the whole relationship of car manufacturers to their customers needs a complete re-think. His company River Simple’s first project was the Morgan LIFE car prototype, followed by the Hyrban city car and eventually the light blue RASA prototype. There have been ups and downs, but River Simple have kept the faith and so I was delighted to be able to go to the factory in Llandrindod to see the fruits of their labours. The red car you see in the photo is the first of a limited production run of 20 cars they are building for a 12 month trial of River Simple cars. Based around Abergavenny and part funded by the E.U., over 200 people have signed up for a one month trial of the cars and they will also be testing the River Simple leasing scheme. There is a hydrogen-fuel pump already installed in the bus station car park in Abergavenny and the leaseholders of a River Simple Rasa will pay £370 a month plus 18p a mile including VAT for the use of the car and this is fully inclusive of insurance, maintenance and fuel. Hugo explains that as River Simple are not in the business of selling cars it is in their interest, as they are also paying for maintenance and fuel, to make the cars as fuel efficient, well built and long-lasting as possible. Unlike traditional car making, they have no need to flog you expensive spare parts, build in obsolescence or design cars that can do 150mph. They would like to be the first genuinly sustainable car manufacturer and to this end Hugo has EVEN had discussions with the company that mines platinum, an intergral part of the fuel cell, about leasing the platinum in the fuel cell and then giving it back to the mining company at the end of the car’s life.

But enough of this high-minded twaddle. What’s it like to be chauffeured around Llandod in one? Pretty damn exciting. It’s no surprise that Hugo is a fan of 1960’s racing cars and that one of his inspirations was Cooper and Lotus, who trounced other racing car manufacturers in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s by starting again from first principles. They built very light-weight rear-engined machines with motors and components from other existing manufacturers and eclipsed the Italian front-engined, heavy, complicated factory built motors that had dominated Formula 1 previously. It’s no surprise because the Rasa feels like I imagine a 1958 Lotus 11 feels. Low to the ground and planted on the road with it’s four electric motors at every corner. Very fast accelerating up to 60mph and quite firm suspension, but with super comfy bucket seats. All mod cons and gull-wing doors, but at the same time a bit noisy and 1950’s. I loved it and I want one. If you’d like to learn more about them, it’s riversimple.com Email: info@broadsheep.com Website: www.broadsheep.com

Next stop, my friend C.J. and the mighty Tesla model X. The model X is Tesla’s flagship model and it is big, fat, luxurious and packed with goodies. It’s fast (very), has a big battery and really good range helped by an online Sat Nav system that once it knows where you are going will tell you the best way to get there plus where you should stop to pick up a Tesla Fast Charging point. It’s comfy, has a massive boot and is as simple to drive as a pedal car and is very expensive. Then there is the gizmos which are many and go from the practical to the absurd! I think I espy the hand of Elon Musk (Tesla’s nutty owner) in some of these stoned flights of fancy. 1. Good Gizmos. Self opening doors (gull wings at the back). If something unexpected pulls out from a side street the car stops automatically. Self steering, the car will see the road ahead and take over steering duty. 2. Slighty Dotty Gizmos. You can phone up the car on your mobile and it will pull out of the garage and drive itself round to your front door while turning on the heated seats. 3. Completeley Mad Gizmos. Built-in woopy cushions so at a touch of a button you can make any of your passengers fart! The data screen which is bigger than my TV can show a cosy roaring log fire film in the front of the car. Last but not least, if it’s someone’s birthday or wedding the car will go into mad freak out hyperactivity and, flash it’s lights, blow it’s horn and flap it’s massive gull wing doors. I guess Elon figures that once he’s buggered off to Mars on his spaceship his cars may not save the world but at least we will all die laughing. From TNT to Cyber Warfare A

RE we modern Mercians considered a warlike people? Oblique remarks about Special Forces invariably crop up in conversations with strangers when they learn that I live in Herefordshire. The history of our WWI munitions factory at Rotherwas is a far better kept secret than the breaking of the Iranian Embassy siege in 1980.

I paid an illegal visit to this abandoned complex seven years ago, when it seemed likely that the huge unlisted Empty Shell Shed would be demolished. Between July 1915 and November 1916, the newly-formed Ministry of Munitions erected five purpose-built high explosives factories, all in rural locations well away from prying eyes. At £200,000 (more than £20-million at today’s prices) Hereford’s was one of the largest. The Empty Shell Shed at Rotherwas is thought to be the largest surviving structure from that programme. It has a clear floor space almost the size of a football pitch. With its distinctive saw-tooth roofline of 14 north lights above me, it was an eerie experience imagining women munitions workers manhandling huge 9.2” naval artillery shells in here, without the benefit of any protective clothing. The average weekly output of shells at Rotherwas was 70,000. Until it was banned under the Geneva Protocol, mustard gas shells were also produced on the site. Many of the women workers became known as ‘Canary Girls’, a pejorative term (coined by Herefordians) arising from their exposure to trinitrotoluene (TNT), which caused their skin and hair to turn an orange-yellow. At its peak, around twothirds of the Rotherwas workforce of 6000 were women. Beyond the derelict shed - projecting from undergrowth like Easter Island statues – I spotted massive 3m-high reinforced concrete ‘blades’, euphemistically known as Blast Walls. Single-storey wooden sheds between these walls were used for the hand-assembly of smaller munitions components such as detonators, depth charges and land mines. If there was an accident – and the shed and its workers were blown to Kingdom Come – the Blast Walls prevented collateral damage. Understandably, most of these grim mementos have now been removed. There were 29 fatalities on the site. Empty Shell Shed’s abandoned interior in 2012

6

But the old Empty Shell Shed lives on, soon to be clad with insulated high-tech cladding, providing 2000sq m of work space in what is described as a ‘business incubation and innovation centre’. The new £7.3-million building - due for completion this Spring – is seen as the flagship of the rebranded Skylon Business Park. There is bullish talk at Rotherwas of inward investment of £48-million, with many of these expected tenants linked to the shadowy world of cyber security. Although local historian Bill Laws’ book In the Munitions (Logaston Press), is a fascinating account of some of the women workers’ memories of Rotherwas, too little tangible evidence exists. It is to be hoped that a powerful display, based on archive pictures, will inform visitors to this new cyber centre of the invaluable work which these unsung heroines performed. There is also a realistic prospect of an on-line Roll of Honour being created. More information can be found at www.rotherwas.com

The Battle of Barrs Court Road

Documented evidence is sparse. The salient facts seem to be that in the headlong pre-war armaments rush that preceded WWI, employment prospects at the new Rotherwas munitions factory were good. Especially for women, whose main alternative forms of work then were either farm labouring or domestic service. And the money was better. Hereford Council advertised these job opportunities nationally, which resulted in a big influx of applicants, especially from Cardiff and Liverpool. There were also many Belgian refugees. With all the city’s boarding houses filled and eager incomers having to be billeted at Leominster and Ross, the council had to erect tented accommodation for the women munitioneers at the end of Barrs Court Road. Transport to and from the 150-acre site was via a free train link. Tempers flared early one morning when some Scouser ladies tried queue jumping and an all-women pitched battle ensued, with hat pins being the weapon of choice. The police were called, arrests were made and one young woman was jailed for assault – though her sentence was later reduced to probation after a trade union’s successful appeal. Nick Jones

letters Dear editor,

Pete,

Ill-winds batter Mid Wales. Really? Seriously? Wales, once industrialised, one thought, beyond repair, where people toiling in the mud and the blood of the mining/iron/steel industries choked on the fumes of their labours and watched their children drown in the slurry of Aberfan only to be betrayed by their English masters in the guise of the NCB and Thatcher. From those deep depths of despair and poverty industrialised rural Wales washed itself of the black grime of the past, and as the valleys greened over the human waste of bygone industries Wales languished, wasted, washed up, discarded. Wales became a curiosity, a backwater of peace and tranquility that survived on subsistence level farming and localised tourism. The industrial landscape of sheep farming proving more attractive than that of coal mining, although now even mines have a peculiar romance for those that never worked them. So it is with that backstory in mind when I say that this is Wales’ chance to be a major player in the renewables world, we have the resources, we have the people to create and advance the technology, and with that, Rural Wales can lift communities still struggling with the old industrial past out of the social mire and into the bright new renewables life that those lucky enough to live in the countryside are aspiring to, particularly those that have moved here for that very purpose. Wales should look like the picture, each turbine marking a communities aspiration to do better for themselves, for wider Wales, for wider world. Communities should be encouraged to engage with whatever natural resources are available, whether it’s clear-felled uplands “landscaped” for industrial wool production or the water that gave us the rich valleys below that powered the pre-coal industries where most of us now live. As things stand, we have opposition to the future from obscure groups supported by the CPRW that actively seeks to prevent Wales having the opportunity to advance itself on the back of the climate disaster which Wales played no small part in creating. Wales has a serious part to play in being part of the solution after, for so long, a major contributor to the problem. I would say Wales has the right to do this for itself. The crime of Hendy is that, at the moment, it generates nothing for whatever reason. What it does do in the mean time is illustrate an outstanding example of why we are where we are, the future retarded as continents burn and drown.

Pete Smith, Bluefoot.

Thanks for the great editorial and I too ran into all these issues using Beryl bikes in Hereford. In August I had to upgrade my phone from “old” iphone to a newer Android and EE plan just to unlock and use the bikes and run the payment app. I was just answering the Hereford Council Budget 2020/21 and Corporate Plan 2020-24 consultation survey and at section ‘Digital and better use of technology’. They asked ‘Do you support further investment in technology to enable new and improved ways of delivering services?’ My answer was No. My comments were “...What a joke, Herefordshire never got a clear TV Channel 4 feed. Why do we act like mobile phone county coverage is a success? I have no belief rural Herefordshire will have internet coverage to run apps, online services, business trade etc. Do not spend any money until 95% of Herefordshire had 5G coverage. This year’s technology fiasco was that the high end smart phone was needed to use a Beryl bike!”. But will they listen? Keep up the reporting. Regards Wendy

cinema LE MANS ’66 (12A) For an unashamed (and increasingly politically incorrect) petrolhead, this was a must-see that didn’t disappoint. A docu-drama built around the giant Ford corporation’s determination to beat Italian minnow Ferrari’s hitherto dominance of the gruelling Le Mans 24 Hour race in 1966, James Mangold’s film begins with Ford’s somewhat reluctant hiring of specialist race-car builder Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon, superb) and then Shelby’s decision to employ his old and decidedly quixotic engineer/driver pal, Ken Miles – think Dominic Cummings, with spanners – played by the chameleon-like Christian Bale with a just-plausible English accent. Involving huge technical challenges and inter-company intrigue – the ever reliable Tracy Letts is a suitably imperious Henry Ford II – the build-up to the actual event is pretty credible and increasingly tense, but the race footage itself is magnificent and alone worth the price of a ticket…. even for non-petrolheads. JO JO RABBIT (12A) Perhaps best known for his acting and T.V. work in his New Zeeland homeland, writer/ director Taika Waititi brings a decidedly risky but ultimately hugely entertaining satire of life under Nazi dictatorship to the cinema. Centred around the titular 10 year-old Jo-Jo Roman (a remarkable Roman Griffin-Davis) who like so many is forcibly conscripted into the Hitler Youth, the film’s decidedly dark (but laugh-out-loud hilarious) humour revolves around his received hatred of Jews, his imagined mentor Adolf (Waititi himself) and his initially horrified discovery that his slyly glamorous mother (Scarlett Johannson) is hiding an Anne Frank-like teenage girl (Elsa Korr) in their attic. Jo Jo’s drunken army captain (THREE BILLBOARDS’ Sam Rockwell on gleeful comic form) enhances a rambunctious tale that becomes oddly wistful as Germany is patently losing WW2, and the cod-accents and Wes Anderson-esque cinematography add much to the film’s appeal.

BOMBSHELL (15) Appropriately wearing a 15 certificate, BOMBSHELL continues the current trend for big-screen docudramas (see LE MANS 66) though here it’s a shocking re-telling of how Fox TV’s boss, Roger Ailes, sexually and mentally abused his glamorous anchorwomen until he was fired in 2017. Apart from a very creepy Ailes (John Lithgow in a convincing fat-suit), the main protagonists are played by Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and the ever transformative Charlize Theron, their mounting indignation initially checked by career politicking, and all three have never been better – although I suspect director Jay Roach (TRUMBO) employed light CGI to somewhat unsettlingly youth-ify their faces. Charles Randolph, who also wrote the scandal-mongering BIG SHORT, provides a sharp, but admirably non-prurient script and Ailes’ disgrace, when it justly comes, is what truly gives the film its title – although Malcolm McDowell’s cameo as Fox owner Rupert Murdoch is additionally impactful.

T

HE more perceptive among regular readers of Mr Pernickety’s gastronomical ramblings in the Woolly Organ will have gathered that he is not a methodical man; not a cautious planner nor averse to risk – in other words, a bit of a shambles. Thus it’s quite normal for the editor of the Marches’ premier periodical to be chasing for copy a day before it’s due, as was the case for this issue, so Mr P found himself on a damp, blustery Monday morning, beneath a sky the colour and texture of cold porridge, motoring south (to avoid censure for being too Ludlow-centric) wondering where he should direct his critical faculties. Much though he abhors the array of characterless multiple eating places that infest the City of Hereford – especially the bare, windy canyon that replaced the old cattle market – and considers it his duty to warn readers of the WO against using them, he felt that to eat in one on such a day would be too gloomy to bear. Besides he has previously expressed views on Ask Italian and Wildwood, while he imagines that similar objections would apply to Prezzo, Pizza Express, Zizzi, Pizza Hut, Wagamama and any other beastly multiple in the town. With relief, he remembered that the excellent Rule of Tum burger shop had spawned a sibling next door called The Bookshop, run on similar principles but with a more elaborate menu (and, thank goodness, knives and forks). Aware that the place had won an Observer Food Monthly award for Best Sunday Lunch, he hoped they’d still be worth visiting on a Monday.

Strolling past the rear entrance to the happily revived Green Dragon, Mr P barged through the door of The Bookshop and immediately warmed to the recycled-chic of the place, though a little dismayed at the sight of high tables and chairs, albeit occupied by happy-looking millennials. However, further in, Mr P was relieved to find the rest of the tables were a standard, babyboomer-friendly height. He settled on a comfortable plain banquette, looking into the wide room, assessing the bare brick walls, pine-cladding, exposed industrial gubbins hanging off the ceiling, white globe lights, eclectic black and white prints interestingly hung, cheerful utilitarian oak-topped tables and retro bent-ply chairs. As should be the case for any informal town-centre eating house, this was a place to meet friends or work colleagues, or sit in front of an open MacAir, drink coffee, eat breakfast (they are open from 8 am) or sit on one’s own reading a newspaper, or in Mr P’s case a Costa Prize winning novel. Two young bearded chaps sat opposite one another both with their laptops open, one wearing headphones – perhaps they were conversing via Whatsapp. Another couple opposite Mr P were

looking at their phones and occasionally nudging one another. Smiling, intelligent-looking staff contributed to this stress-free ambience which can make a person feel more alert, and cleverer than they usually are. Mr P nodded happily to himself as he picked up a menu – concise to the point of curtness – to make his choices. Shilly-shallying between such options as kedgeree or spicy oriental baked eggs, it seemed sensible to look at the restaurant’s main focus – beef supplied by Farmer Tom, a former drama student reverted to the place of his birth in West Herefordshire to become a celebrity farmer, producing meat from the Hereford and Welsh Black cattle he rears on some of the best grass to grow on our Sceptered Isle, grilled in the restaurant’s handmade Fogarty charcoal oven. So, Steak and Eggs it was: a rare-cooked piece of well-marbled, month-hung, charcoal tinged sirloin steak cut into lovely pink slices, with two fried eggs, hash browns, and – optional extras – field mushrooms and black pudding – unsubtle for sure, but all delicious. The meat was as succulent and flavoursome as Mr P could have wished, making even the somewhat clunky prose of Jonathan Coe’s novel less irritating, while a bottle of Teme Valley Talbot Light hoppy ale only enhanced it all. In the background, above the almost intrusive hum of the air conditioning, Mr Pernickety was cheered by a dose of positive nostalgia in the seductive anthem of his age, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Our House and other thinking-mans’ rock of that wonderful era. Less stimulating was the pudding he chose to follow – a chunk of inarticulate pear and chocolate sponge, and coffee, served in a kind of plastic beaker, which tasted quite tired, even a little stewed. But these are minor cavils; The Bookshop offers pretty much all the qualities Mr P requires in an eating house, and he can’t wait to go back and wrap himself around their prize-winning Sunday lunch. Mr Pernickety

grass roots Burning Wood - a Crazy Way to Combat Climate Change

F

OR quite a few years now, the government has been spending vast sums of taxpayers’ money on subsidising the burning of wood and biomass in power plants, on the basis that this is somehow a sustainable way of generating electricity. Climate scientists in Britain have been remarkably silent about this ludicrous policy, as Britain has become the world’s largest importer of wood pellets. According to a report by the Office for National Statistics in August 2019, biomass is now the biggest source of “renewable” energy consumed in the UK. And public financial backing for this form of generation has reached close to £800 million a year. However, academics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, have undermined the rationale for burning biomass to produce power. They conclude that this method of generating electricity is causing extra global warming and will go on doing so until beyond the year 2100. In the past, support for biomass burning has been based on the assumption that, when trees are felled and then burned, the carbon dioxide emitted by combustion is re-absorbed by new tree growth and this leads to carbon neutrality. However, the MIT experts point out that the re-growth of the trees takes many decades and is uncertain. Forest recovery can be limited by fire, insect damage, and conversion to other land uses. Professor John D Sterman reports that he and the MIT team assumed that the biomass wood was replacing the most carbon intensive fuel - coal. They then employed a widely used climate policy model to work out how long forest re-growth might take. When forests were clear-cut it would take well over 80 years for the trees to grow back. And even when forests were merely thinned out, the re-growth time was still around 63 years. Professor Sterman says he had hoped to find that burning biomass could assist in the battle to curb climate change. But he has been disappointed by the actual figures. “Unfortunately,” says Sterman, “our results indicate that wood worsens climate change through the rest of this century at least – even when wood displaces coal, the most carbon-intensive fuel.” He also issues a direct challenge to policy-makers in Britain and the European Union. “Declaring that wood biofuels are carbon neutral,” says Professor Sterman, “as the EU, UK, and others have done, assumes that re-growth is rapid and certain. Neither is true. This accounting fiction promotes costly policies that accelerate climate change. Through renewable energy subsidies, the UK and Europe are paying power plants to make climate change worse.”

50

I don’t believe there is a single genuine climate scientist, or Whitehall civil servant, who can really think that burning wood chips is an answer to climate change. The virtual silence in Britain about the absurd subsidies paid for biomass burning is more likely due to a general

reluctance to rock the boat. The failure of most academics and even some environmental groups to condemn the policy resembles the silence that is observed over Britain’s routine claims that it has cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 40% since 1990. There are only a few climate scientists, such as Professor Kevin Anderson of the Tyndall Centre at Manchester University, who are willing to be brutally honest about Britain’s actual energy performance. He argues that once “imported” emissions are factored in, in all the goods we bring in from overseas - such as cars from Asia - and once we include the huge growth in flights taken by British consumers, which aren’t counted in our territorial emissions, the real cut we have made in greenhouse gases during the last thirty years is closer to 10%. Critics of burning biomass have been warning for most of the last decade that it was a misguided policy, yet the tonnage of wood waste and pellets burned has gone up and up. While the amount was well under a million tonnes in 2010, it had climbed close to 8 million tonnes by 2018. The best-known biomass burning plant in the UK, Drax power station in Yorkshire, has ambitious plans for largescale carbon capture and storage. It claims that within a few years it will capture up to 16 million tonnes of carbon a year. But, so far, its annual carbon capture total is only a tiny fraction of that level, around one tonne a day, or less than 400 tonnes a year. Writing about biomass burning last year, Raffaella Ocone, professor of chemical engineering at HeriotWatt University, referred to what she called the “carbon capture delusion”. She said the claim that burning wood could be carbon neutral was caused by considering the combustion process in isolation. “It ignores,” she wrote, “…a wider chain of activities, including planting and harvesting the trees, converting the wood into chips, and then shipping them to the power plant – not to mention storing and using the captured CO2 once the wood has been burned.” We need more scientists like Professor Ocone who are willing to challenge government energy policy that is based on bad science or deliberate self-delusion. All going organic could mean up by 70% higher food emissions Have you ever looked at an organic vegetable, with the moral part of the brain urging you to put it in your shopping trolley? It turns out that not all organic foods are equal. Scientists at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire have now quantified the greenhouse gases produced from farming different types of grain, vegetable and livestock using both conventional and organic methods. Organic farming uses less chemical inputs, such as synthetic fertiliser or pesticides that mean it generally has a lower environmental effect. But because yields tend to be lower, organic farming means more land is needed to produce the same amount of crops or livestock. That’s why the scientists assessed the environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product’s life, from production to final consumption. Perhaps the UK should promote organic production of selected foods Cranfield looked at the emissions produced during the farming process and also included emissions from inputs, such as production of synthetic fertiliser for conventional crops. They concluded that, over the full life cycle, some organic crops such as beans, potato, oats and spring barley produce higher greenhouse gas emissions per tonne than on conventional farms. Others such as oilseed rape, rye, winter barley and wheat were more efficient under organic production. In the livestock sector pigs, beef and sheep were more environmentally friendly under organic production, but poultry was not. So, in order to achieve its new target of zero net greenhouse gas emissions perhaps the UK should promote organic production of selected foods? If England and Wales switched to buying organic food it would require more than seven million hectares of land overseas However, the research suggests that, if everybody in this country switched to buying organic food, we could not grow enough to feed ourselves. We would need to import more food from overseas, which means more emissions from ships, trucks and air freight. In another unintended consequence, grass fields that store carbon would have to be converted to grow crops, effectively causing further emissions. The estimate was feeding England and Wales alone would require more than 7 million hectares of land overseas, nearly five times the area currently used. This could lead to 70% more greenhouse gas emissions from people all eating organic food compared to conventional. Too often we take a one-sided approach to problems and miss the big picture. We are becoming increasingly aware of the scale of food waste and diets may be changing away from emissions-intensive foods such as red meat. If we reduced food waste and improved diets, while further improving the yield efficiency of organic farming, there would be less need to import from overseas. We also need to use long-term thinking to understand what will happen if the UK continues with conventional farming. We know that intensive farming methods lead to loss of biodiversity, reduced water quality and reduced soil health which ultimately makes food production more vulnerable. Some organic products are better for the environment than others   So, where does that leave UK on the question of organic food? We can inflict damage or protect the environment with our purchases and, if we can afford to, we should choose wisely. It is OK to have a mixed shopping basket, as some organic products are better for the environment than others. But, it’s hard to make informed choices as food labels aren’t clear enough about their emissions and other environmental impacts. In the meantime, one way might be to try to buy seasonal and local organic food. Then we can be sure to reduce overseas emissions from transport and land conversion, and there is the added bonus that it will help support our farmed landscape. ` John Main (Chartered Royal Society Biologist)
