Slow Circles F
ORTY odd years ago I can remember meeting Richard Booth in a basement of one of his shops in Castle Street, Hay on Wye in order to discuss whether it might be a good place to start a restaurant. At the time Hay had one miserable cafe, no restaurants, no decent pubs, no tapas bars, boutiques, trendy nick-nack shops or nightlife of any sort. Thanks to Richard the change the town has gone through in that time, whilst still retaining its recognisable shape and appearance must be the most radical of any small town in Britain. During last month’s Hay Festival I had the honour of helping ‘The Family’ (sounds rather mafia like) organise a pop-up live music cafe bar The Menagerie in Hay Castle and so completed one of the slowest gestating ideas in catering history. 44 years from initial idea to inception and in that time the whole face of the place has changed so much that what might have been a ground breaking move in 1972 is a “Yawn - oh not another pop-up bar”. Still it must be said it was a lotta fun and the live music nights were a gas. Staying overnight in the castle was surprisingly ghost free but being able to tell the rather posh gent whose dog was shitting on the castle lawn that “Yes, actually I do live here” was worth its weight in ermine. Back in 72 we lived in an extremely basic cottage in the hills above RhosGoch and by coincidence some old photos of the place have just emerged. Ah the romance, the lack of water or electricity, the motorbikes. Talking of shitting dogs I have just completed that rather ponderous circle as well and have rejoined the ranks of the people you see walking around holding little black plastic bags at arms length. I haven’t had a dog since dear, departed Dennis who often graced these pages but have lately been spending rather too long watching doggy programmes on the deeper reaches of Freeview. Also I am very keen on one particular row of shops in Church Stretton High Street. It contains a chippie, a shop that sells very cheap kitchen knife sets, Housmans cafe bar that has regular live music (see Little Rumba there July 13th plug, plug), the really excellent Van Doesburgs deli, and a Border Collie rescue charity shop with pictures of the dogs in the window. I happened to notice there was a Huntaway sheep dog looking for a home so I arranged to go and meet him. The dogs are mostly housed at kennels on an Alpaca farm in the hills that is run by a really friendly bunch of women who are obviously mad about the dogs. The Huntaway in question took one look at me and decided it would rather go back to the kennels. The lady who ran the place then looked me carefully up and down - scruffy, hairy, dressed in black with a white barnet and said ‘I might have just the dog for you’. So I now have a new companion who is a bouncy, scruffy, hairy, black and white teenager called Charlie.

Teme Dreams Last Night In my dream 2 Bosch-like anglers are fishing off the bridge at Lloyney; they look like armoured beetles, swathed in waterproofs. They sit hunched up back to back on opposite parapets under their lanterns; the road is behind them and the river underneath. They pull mightily on their rods and sway to and fro under a claustrophobic red-stained moon. They each imagine they’ve caught the big one, when in reality their lines have been malevolently entangled by a river spirit, a fishy illusion who lives beneath the arch. He is the local Gollum. Forlornly he yearns to assist at a drowning - a drunk walking back from the Lloyney Inn, or perhaps a child swept away in the spate. He dreams of these things, but all he ever gets are anglers’ fish hooks and then the poor drowned lambs each spring. The bridge that he haunts is both his home and his prison. He picks away at the mortar hoping one day to undermine its vice-like grip on the river, but because he is of the spirit world he can only psychokinetically loosen a few frosted flakes of stone from the dripping arches. Once this was just a ford and he could arrange a little slip on the stones for the horses so that they pitched their riders into the stream, or to panic the sheep as they were driven across. But nowadays nobody even knows he’s there as they drive over in their impregnable cars. The river spirit is the servant of the silvery snake, the Teme, the dark one, the laily worm that settled here 10,000 years ago, wriggling its way down through the rock and the moraines and the mud of its bed as the glaciers melted. Now it nestles comfortably along the length of the valley, and in its sleep adjusts its course each winter-spate, wriggling and scratching. It makes a little more bank fall in here, deposits more silt there, dumps branches and leaf litter and plastic sacks in drifts against the irksome bridges that hold it in place, the manacles that the humans have built to pin it down. Once in a while it contrives to destroy a bridge; you can see the remains of one up at Melin-yGrogue that went down in the 1947 flood; but there are too many of them and too well built for it ever to be free again and it must endlessly suffer the irritations of midnight anglers, illegal car-dumpers and farmers in JCBs vainly ploughing out straighter channels, until the day when at last the plague of arrogant humans over-reaches itself, the weather changes and like locusts their numbers crash. Later

Taking the Ap-Brane’s paddle-steamer from the Lloyney at 10 past 11 sharp, closing time, as it moves off down the estuary, picking up speed past where Knighton used to be (where in a deep pool glumly still squats the spirit of a manacled troll, born there). The ferry stops each night at our little jetty below Rhos-y-meirch, the reflection of its coloured lights glinting in the water, a brief stop for the gamblers and farmers, runaway slaves and welshmen who travel on it from Bristol to Oswestry and on to the North, now that the plains of Herefordshire, Shropshire
and Cheshire are underwater. The North sea is more like a Northern Ocean now, Britain an archipelago, truly the British Isles. The boat is landing a few barrels of coffee and oranges, and taking on timber and lambs and the foot passengers who have walked down from the Mid Wales, from the Terminus at Llanbister Road. The dank walls of old farms can still be seen at low tide – Monaughty, Skyborry Green and Panpunton, like ground down jawbones. Their water meadows are now mud flats at low tide - as far as the eye can see. The pilot carefully follows the channel, marked out with buoys, following the path of the old river, lining up his course against the landmarks, the stones that stick out of the Mount and the ruined observatory on Stonewall Hill, a folly that was built by scientists to look out for asteroids, who didnt look hard enough in the other direction, inward, missing the danger already within our walls ..... Later still Long after the giants left, and their towers fell down, the asylum seeker, the dreamer, travels into the upper Teme Valley, past the ruins of Knighton and the broken pier at Rhos-y-merch, and over the Lloyney bridge. The soil has washed off the slopes; the roofs have fallen in, the forests have burnt. The valley is now a disordered savannah, littered with boulders; the gullies are choked with silver-black timber, the bridges are broken. Walking the old track he rounds the ridge at Lloyney and comes to the long plain between Llanfair and Beguildy. The low vegetation is interrupted only by collapsed fences and dried up river channels, and moraines of rubble and driftwood. Nevertheless this part of the valley is greener than anything he has seen since leaving the sea. His eyes widen. Along the middle of the meadow there is a double line of trees, standing in an avenue whose distant end he cannot see. The oaks are ancient, and many of the nearer ones are already in ruins, some naked of their bark or crownless. Most have lost a limb, although a few giants have kept their shape and their vigour. Nearly all of them are in leaf. At first indeed there are just stumps, and gaps where the river has washed out the line in its endless meanderings, nevertheless the avenue continues to march up the valley in some sort of order, going back in time. It dawns on him as he moves on that the trees are progressively younger, but also grander, taller, more vigorous, and then for the last half mile he sees that they shrink again, becoming younger still, immature specimens, until he reaches a farmouse and a miraculous stream where the trees are just saplings, and as he passes the end of the line the pairs of trees are only a few feet high, carefully watered and guarded against the roaming goats by tangles of ancient barbed wire. From the farmhouse a woman approaches. The traveller stands and waits. This is the avenue of the thousand and one trees, 500 pairs, 500 years, planted year by year down the valley, that tells the story of how the wind changed, how the sea came and went, and many other things. cinema MUSTANG (15) In this Cannes-winning debut by French-Turkish writer/director, Deniz Gamze Ergüven, with long, brunette manes, coltish limbs and uninhibited nature, five orphaned sisters are gradually cowed into submission by their grandmother and uncle in rural Turkey. Innocent frisking on the beach is reported back to their guardians as lewd behaviour, prompting a beating by the uncle whose claimed concern for their moral welfare is undermined by his own carnal appetites, and increasingly harsh restrictions on their activities. Forced to wear drab, formless uniforms, live behind barred windows whilst schooled in homemaking until, as the youngest puts it, “The house became a wife factory that we never came out of,” Ergüven subtly builds a narrative tension around the sisters’ growing self-awareness and defiance, fittingly enhanced by the wildly beautiful countryside. MON ROI (15) French actress turned director, Maïwenn (Le Besco) once again chose her POLISSE co-star, Emmanuelle Bercot to play the troubled heroine in this deceptively complex meditation on a relatively commonplace theme – a regretful lover trying to reconcile a romance gone wrong. Following a serious accident Marie-Antoinette (Bercot) uses her recovery to reflect on her turbulent relationship with Georgio (Vincent Cassell, the MESRINE chronicles), a man whose very wildness initially attracted, but ultimately undid her. Beautifully shot, the flashbacks illustrating the couple’s emotional zigzag are perfectly pitched, with Louis Garrel adding resonance as Georgio’s younger brother who disapproves of his sibling’s excesses. Though not entirely devoid of sentimentality, MON ROI is nonetheless a hugely engaging example of a couple trying to hold together a fatally flawed relationship.

THE DAUGHTER (18) Based on Ibsen’s play, The Wild Duck, Christian (Paul Schneider, WATER FOR ELEPHANTS) returns home to find his father Henry (the great Geoffrey Rush) closing down his timber business – the area’s last major employer – and marrying the much younger Anna (Anna Torv). The varying degrees of dismay Christian feels about these events are considerably heightened when his renewed friendship with the now unemployed Oliver (Ewen Leslie), his irascible father (Sam Neill) and daughter Hedvig (Odessa Young) reveals a secret that threatens to tear their lives apart. Best known as an actor, writer/director Simon Stone (JINDABYNE), displays a commendable balance of sensitivity and mounting tension and the performances, especially Young in her first major role and the ever-watchable Neill (PEAKY BLINDERS’ Major Campbell), are terrific. 9 July ROMEO AND JULIET The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company encore screening. The Radnorshire Arms Hotel, Presteigne
A
FTER his last outing to Knighton, Mr P decided to continue his odyssey through the border settlements by revisiting Presteigne. While the outpouring of indignation provoked by his impressions of Knighton, published in recent issues of the Woolly Organ, could well have discouraged Mr P from expressing himself with his customary frankness, his followers will be glad to know that his duty to them will not allow him to abandon that well-tempered sword of truth with which he goes about his calling. He might add, too, in reassurance to the residents of Knighton, that he neither made, nor implied any criticism of them; Mr P has many friends living in and around Knighton, and he loves them all. And while Presteigne, Queen of the Marches and former epicentre of Radnorshire complete with its own Assizes, is a lovely town with many charming and distinctive aspects to it, it too is not without a few strange characteristics, as well as its fair share of eccentric residents. Having previously enjoyed an evening at the Duck’s Nest (qv: Broadsheep, June 2015) of which he still hears good reports, Mr P wanted to try The Radnorshire Arms, once the town’s most distinguished hostelry. He had retained fond memories of the place, having stayed there some forty years ago with a beautiful and vibrant young woman. So it was with a slight tint of the rose in his vision that he telephoned to book a table for dinner with his Very Old Friend, the wrinkle-rocker, and for additional expertise, a highly knowledgeable Knackered Old Chef (the KOC). First he consulted the inter-web doodah to find a website well splattered with standard, cliché-laden exhortations that mean nothing.... “Fine Dining: Let our experienced and friendly table staff take care of your needs whilst our qualified chef prepares a wide selection of traditional local dishes to your individual taste or dietary requirements.” A few days later he set off for the sleepy town through the lovely rolling hills of North Herefordshire. He was reassured by the sight of The Radnorshire Arms - a very handsome building and a fine example of its period. Mr P met up with his VOF and the KOC in a fine panelled bar marred by ugly, uncomfortable catalogue furniture. It puzzles Mr P that operators can move into a place like this and desecrate it with such stuff and naff ‘pub’ carpet. The only ales on offer were Doom Bar and Old Speckled Hen, two lack-lustre brews that normally indicate the dead hand of a pubco in the background (although in this case the choice is apparently voluntary). It is perverse and frankly bad business in these parts not to stock one of a half dozen top local breweries. Mr P and his party sat at one of the nasty modern tables (not at one of the fatuous high ones) until Mr P wandered off to find a menu. The grilled salmon came with ‘Roast Cherry Tomato’s’, and the Char Grilled Pork Chop with ‘Glazed Apple’s’. Call Mr P a pedant, but if a chef can’t take the trouble to spell his/her dishes correctly, how much faith can a punter have in his/her ability to cook them?

Two harassed women were running both the restaurant and the bar. They clearly had too much to do. Mr P’s party strolled into the finely panelled but awfully furnished dining-room (with just three other tables, evidently winding down) and sat down at 8pm. After unnecessary confusion over the wine order, it took twenty minutes to get their food ordered. The starters arrived at 8.45. The VOF liked his Ham Hock terrine (despite it being under-seasoned and, Mr P thought, pretty bland) and he especially enjoyed the home-made piccalilli (£7.50). The KOC ate little of his crispy Goat’s Cheese, Water Melon, Olive and Cucumber Salad – a bowl of what looked like budget supermarket ‘baby leaf salad’ (5.95). Mr P had Grilled Smoked Haddock (which he liked) with Welsh Rarebit (which, with the texture of a crumble topping, he didn’t) at £7.25. By this stage Mr P’s party were about 50% content. But even this moderate score was not to be maintained. The VOF had a veggie option as a main course – Pea, Mint and Broad Bean Tagliatelle with Rocket Salad (12.50) After two mouthfuls he lost interest and it stayed in the bowl. The KOC who had promised to curb his exuberant kitchen argot and expletives, muttered darkly that his Navarin of Lamb and Bombay Style potatoes – all served in one bowl – amounted to a lamb and potato curry, and entirely lacked the Gallic flavour and style he’d been hoping for. Mr P’s Char-Grilled Pork Chop was small, hard, charred and chewy, though not without a smoky flavour. His Fondant Potato was covered in a thick, almost impenetrable skin. (£17.50!) The VOF’s expressed lack of satisfaction with his Tagliatelle evoked an offer of two free puddings. The VOF grumbled that his summer pudding didn’t deliver as the juices had not descended and flavoured the dry slice of bread across the base. Mr P enjoyed his Dark Choc Mousse. A good and not over-priced bottle of Rioja smoothed over some of the cracks, but dinner, on the whole, was a disaster, adding to Mr P’s huge disappointment that this once excellent and charming establishment has fallen into the abyss of tastelessness, slack management and under-skilled cuisine. It was tragically evident that, like The Feathers in Ludlow, what goes on within doesn’t match up to the delightful early 17th century exterior. www.misterpernickety.com

Only 12% of flights from the U.K. are for business purposes. The remaining 88% of flights are for holidays and leisure. 70% of these holiday flights are taken by only 15% of the U.K. population causing greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and demand for airport expansion. 57% didn’t fly at all last year. The remaining 16% of the population took one or two flights each. The best way to reduce emissions is if we all stopped flying! Otherwise have one tax free return flight each year. The second flight taxed, rising incrimentally for every flight after that.
