Don’t shed no tears

Over the last 2 weekends Sheep Music has quietly slipped back into our lives with a small festival featuring garden sheds. Yes, I did say sheds. Come on, try and keep up. Sheds are all the rage these days. Haven’t you seen them on the telly. There is Amazing Spaces presented by over-enthusiastic George Clarke. Then there is Shed and Buried, where very annoying presenter Henry Cole spends a lot of time trying to be charismatic and witty while looking in sheds and his much better qualified sidekick, Sam Lovegrove, gets on with rebuilding whatever they find in the shed. Then there is ..... er ... well anyway take my word for it sheds are very ‘à la mode’. The Sheep Music event consisted of 2 weekends. The first dedicated to building the sheds and the second involved doing things in them and then auctioning them off. The teams of shed builders were given a flat, square, plywood base to work off and a pile of old bits of wood and then off they went. And boy did they go! There were a whole bunch of very keen builders involved in this game and by the end of the first day Huw Morris (who advertises in Broad Sheep) had the bar up, finished and open for business and it was already obvious the rest of the sheds were going to be very exciting. Bobby, who builds oak frames for a living, was, with his team, constructing a glass summerhouse with an exotic Asian roof line. Owen and his family (who started the whole idea off) were building what looked like a sizeable cathedral. Gordon, who has actually had his sheds featured on the aforementioned TV programme Amazing Spaces, was fabricating a distressed, mini-pavilion that looked like it might have been discovered in the grounds of a Royal country house and Lewes, Bronwyn, Will and Tom were building ...well a normal shed.

The judging was scheduled for 4pm Sunday but Owen needed a hand to finish the cathedral. Everyone jumped in to help Grass roots 50 him get some cladding and a roof. Then Comp therapies 52 at 4.30 the judges looked serious. They consulted their clipboards and they chatted We take no responsibility to the builders. Then, as they approached for the veracity of the the shed-shed, a miracle occured. The front information herein flapped down, the roof lifted up, inside Pete Mustill was a mirror ball, a live band (well Dave Mayfield, Stapleton, Luke to be precise). It was a full festival stage concealed inside a shed. The judges Nr Presteigne, Powys had their winner. The next weekend the LD8 2LW sheds played host to an afternoon of kids Tel: 01544 260051 entertainment and crafty crafts followed Email: info@broadsheep.com by a knees up with some great live music. Website: www.broadsheep.com But frankly who needs music at a festival when you’ve got sheds?

letters Dear Pete,

Dear Ed,

I came across a couple of What’s On - type magazines recently. In the May issue the editorial had: ‘...Jools Holland...may be an annoying little cunt, but at least he’s our annoying little c***...’ In the June issue there was a badly-drawn and lettered - er - comic strip in which a dog’s thought bubble refers to his owner as a c***.

You never know who is reading your mag. I read with interest your article on the New London Embassy (as it is known to keep its profile low in correspondence). Not bad on accuracy. Without giving away anything not already in the public realm: No moat, the pond at the front is dual function of security and rainwater attenuation. As the image of the roof suggests, no helipad either (they are PVs covering). The artists impression isn’t fully correct, but near enough.

I guess you’ll recognise the magazines. They didn’t actually use the ‘c***’ word, but if you’d grown up someplace where the slang was harder, you’d also recognise that ‘twat’ is another word for ‘c***’. And don’t just take my word for it - my Oxford dictionary has this to say: twat n (vulg.) Female genitals. What about that? As a kid growing up in Birmingham, if I’d wandered about saying ‘twat’ my dad would’ve slapped me, and rightly so. No doubt kids in Herefordshire and The Marches, reading the sad comic strip, may think ‘twat’ is a great new insult. That would be a shame, wouldn’t it? ‘Bugger all’ and ‘bollocks’ (May editorial) aren’t necessary, but just about get by in daily conversation, but you wouldn’t say ‘c***’ down the pub, would you ? Or ‘twat’ in the hearing of those who know... Apart from that, Broadsheep is as good as ever, my entertainments bible, for which much thanks. The June editorial, though, was - how can I put this? - bollocks. You could have sold the space, made £160, and entertained your readers. Best wishes John Eden

We are also betting on Trump in October, but that is just guesswork on our part. Dont ask me the completion date, thats a sore subject............. Regards

Martin Chief Engineer New London Embassy SIR ROBERT MCALPINE LTD.

On Being For Or Against The Environment Climate change and agriculture are the main causes of Britain’s declining biodiversity. 75% of the UK is farmed. The environment is in desperate need of a sensitive, balanced, far-reaching vision that does not pollute soil, air and water and make money for big business at the expense of all else. The new Environment Secretary was active in taking Britain out of Europe - a Europe that was instrumental in environment and wildlife protection - he also got Climate Change taken off the school curriculum.

Movies Motor Ahead A

PART from films, my professional scribbling duties mainly involve motorised transport and this month there’s a rare opportunity to combine both. First off is BABY DRIVER (15), a sort of Grand Theft Auto meets La La Land, in which British writer/director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz) cunningly cast Divergent’s suitably cherubic Ansel Elgort as the titular hero, the preferred getaway jockey for Kevin Spacey’s Doc, a fastidious criminal mastermind. Key to Baby’s modusoperandi is an onboard mix-tape blasting out fabtastic driving songs, turning his jaw-dropping wheel work into high-end music videos. Woven around the inevitable “one last job” that Baby mysteriously owes Doc is his burgeoning romance with a feisty waitress (Lily James), and Jamie Foxx and John Hamm as warring psychotic bank robbers who Baby has to ferry around in harm’s considerable way. Camera work and production design fuel the adrenalin rush and the music, ranging from Queen to Martha Reeves, is just terrific. Then we have (Bruce) McLAREN (12), the cheery but determined Kiwi who during a hugely successful career in motorsport, founded his own manufacturing company that long after his tragic death in 1970, remains dominant in Formula One. At just 14 years-old he campaigned an Austin 7-based hillclimb car, but soon moved onto pure circuit racing coming second in the 1957/8 New Zealand championship. Using gripping archive footage, cunning recreations and many moving interviews, Roger Donaldson who made the bike racing movie The Fastest Indian In The World, cast lookalike Dwayne Cameron to play the young McLaren as he moved to England to join the Cooper team in 1959. And from where aided by his intuitive engineering skills, after winning the USA Grand Prix that same year went onto endless glory. Slightly more sedate is THE JOURNEY (12A) in which obliged to attend a meeting brokered by then British PM Tony Blair (Toby Stephens) in Scotland, lifelong political enemies Ian Paisley (Timothy Spall) and Martin McGuinness (Colm Meany) find themselves equally obliged, if by mutual mistrust, to take a car ride together. Based on what would become 2006’s Power Sharing Agreement, Nick Hamm’s fascinating film reveals how gradually, and grudgingly, Paisley and McGuinness let their huge differences be, effectively bringing the Troubles to an end. What neither politician knew was that their driver (Freddie Highmore) was an MI5 plant and their car bugged so that Blair and his chief spook (John Hurt) could monitor their progress. All the main players, especially Spall, are utterly convincing and the film itself is suitably tense yet laced with dry humour. Mark Williams

The Inn at Shipley

I

F Mr Pernickety has any regular followers, they will have discerned from his previous output that he has little affection for Pubcos (property companies that own the freeholds of thousands of pubs in Britain, such as Punch Taverns or Enterprise Inns) which cynically sign up tenants, who often have no experience of running a business, let alone a pub, and are obliged to buy their drink stock from the Pubcos at prices so inflated that it is impossible for them to make a living. At the same time, the branded pub chains like Harvester or JD Wetherspoon suck all the character and individuality out of the places they operate. Those same regular readers will also know that Mr P is as much concerned about the ambience and environment of a restaurant or pub as he is about the food and drink it serves. He has, therefore, been delighted to discover a multiple pub owning group which miraculously allows its many houses to retain a high degree of individuality and charm with independent menus from their kitchens. But before Mr P launches into his impressions of the Inn at Shipley he’d like to offer a few updates. A recent visit to the River Café at Glasbury, on the Wye near Hay, endorsed Mr P’s previous enthusiastic view of the place in 2010. Mr P detected that the former strong Italian influence in the kitchen is no more, but the slow-cooked pork belly on a bed of minty peas with a grilled sausage which he ate this time was no less delicious for that. The interior is as fresh and enjoyable as ever, and so is the wonderful outlook across the river where peaceful kine graze the meadows. Passing through Eardisley on the way home, Mr P stopped off at one of his most-liked Herefordshire pubs, the Tram. Sadly, he didn’t have time to stay and eat, but the place is still run with astonishing skill and great bonhomie by what is now an increasing rarity, a real landlord. And all the diners looked happy. Pizza Ten in Ludlow’s Quality Square, of which Mr P should have made known his strong approval a long time ago, is still serving up delicious and imaginative light, crispy pizzas that make those served by the great intruder, Pizza Express in Castle Square, taste like cardboard frisbees. At the beginning of last year, Mr Pernickety wrote about The Corn Mill in Llangollen, about which (readers may recall) he was more than ebullient. He had no idea – and there were none of the usual depressing tell-tale signs – that it was part of a ‘chain’ or ‘group’, so it came as a surprise to find, while dining at the Inn at Shipley, that the two places are related by common ownership. In appearance and menu, they aren’t at all alike and have distinctly individual demeanours, which was, laudably, the precise aim of the owners and founders of Brunning and Price.

24

With impressive zeal, Jerry Brunning and Martin Price set off on a mission some thirty-five years ago to identify and improve (and, in some cases, create) traditional dining pubs in fine settings, without making

any concessions to potential savings through uniformity. They now own over fifty places in North Wales, the North West and South East of England. Before Messrs Brunning & Price found it, the Inn at Shipley was an established eating house on the road from Bridgnorth to Wolverhampton, which Mr P heard about from one of his Lovely Companion’s colleagues. It was extended and refitted comprehensively, but with such an understanding of what makes a pub feel right and connect with its local community that there was little inside in which Mr P and his Lovely Companion could pick a hole. Their only complaint was that it still all looks a little too fresh, but then the patina of age is something that can only be acquired slowly and organically. Certainly, most of the furniture was old and reassuring, like many of the prints and pictures. The garden is large and well laid out, without a single nasty integrated ‘pub table’ in sight. Mr P, the LC and the Children’s Menu Consultant (AKA the Human Hoover) were joined by the LC’s colleague, a midcentury vintage dealer and his family. Mr P downed a superbly refreshing pint of Three Tuns XXX while they all ordered. Three of the party, including Mr P, started with Black Pudding and Poached Egg in Crispy Breadcrumbs [£6.25]. The black pudding was as good as any Mr P has tasted; the egg provided a tasty textural contrast. Mr P followed this with a Chicken Ham Hock and Leek Pie [£13.95] which was produced in a short-crust pastry that clearly testified to its in-house origins, and was well-stuffed with delicious ingredients; Mr P couldn’t fault it. The M-CVD’s father had Braised Shoulder of Lamb, which got his lips smacking while the rest of the party all pronounced themselves happy with their choices – Spiced Chicken, Sea Bass Fillets baked in Banana Leaves, and a Steakburger for the Human Hoover. After this, Crème Brulée, a reliable test of a chef’s abilities and control of his kitchen, was superb. Larger than normally served, it left Mr P grinning as fatuously as an MP who has just doubled his majority. The chef at the Inn at Shipley is undoubtedly on top of his job, and it is to the credit of the company that owns it that they actively encourage their chefs to work as autonomously as possible, rather than imposing a central menu on them. Mr P’s only cavil was the price of the wines. It really is possible to offer perfectly drinkable wines at

All in all, Mr P enjoyed a top-notch dinner at the Inn and having seen that Brunning and Price also own the Armoury in Shrewsbury, he looks forward to seeing if the same standards of cuisine and individual character are evident there too. www.misterpernickety.com

sensible prices, but the Italian house red as £17 (£16.95, actually) a bottle, and the Rare Vineyards French Pinot Noir which Mr P ordered, though good enough, was overpriced at £21 (£20.95 actually) a bottle. The wine list is the one place where restaurateurs can be seen to be overegging their profits, and the PR benefits of offering some bargain wines would far outweigh the small reduction in profits.

grass roots New Nuclear Power – Renaissance or Mirage? N

UCLEA power is not a subject likely to set pulses racing or to stimulate excited chatter in the pub. But it is a fair bet that nearly all of us use the electricity it produces at some point in the day, even if we live in an eco-house.

And the support for nuclear power of recent governments, going right back to Tony Blair, has the potential to cost us all packet for a long time to come, and to damage the development of energy from wind and solar. If anyone tells you that nuclear is low carbon, please think very hard about that claim. Nuclear power depends on the mining of uranium, and, as good quality uranium gets harder to find, more and more energy and greenhouse gas emissions must be poured into the mining process. Back in the 1970s, in my second year as a journalist, I suggested a story about the problems facing nuclear power to a nightly TV current affairs show. After a trawl through piles of cuttings I learned that the UK’s new showpiece reactor was in deep trouble. The first one to be ordered, was hundreds of millions of pounds over budget, and would be many years late in producing any electricity at all. In the end the infamous Dungeness B plant, on the Kent coast, begun in 1965, did not go on stream until about 22 years later. And it cost four times as much as planned. It was the first of a fleet of seven British-designed and built gas-cooled reactors. It proved impossible to sell them abroad and today they are on the way to being phased out. It was clear the nuclear power industry in Britain was plagued by huge delays, cost overruns and a ludicrous level of optimism. By the time the Dungeness B and other AGRs started generating, Britain was turning towards the American pressurised water reactor, or PWR. Even the hard-headed Mrs Thatcher fell victim to the pie-in-the sky nuclear power vision conjured up by boffins and industry chiefs. Soon after she came to power her ministers went along with a plan concocted by the power industry, then state-owned, to build one new nuclear reactor every year from 1982 onwards. At the time, the industry’s belief that all this new generating capacity was needed was accepted in Whitehall without question. Later it would be shown that such a vast increase in power generation was utterly surplus to requirements. And in the end only one of those reactors, Sizewell B, ever saw the light of day. The central role of government and industry in deciding how much generation power was needed was on the way out. It was undermined by another Thatcherite goal, that of privatising electricity and letting the market determine how much capacity was needed. In the 1980s and 1990s nuclear chiefs had their backs to the wall fighting off criticism over safety and nuclear waste. But from about 2001 they began to play the low carbon card and to talk of a nuclear “renaissance”.

50

“New Nuclear”, we were told, would be reliable, safe and affordable. Yet today, sixteen years after the renaissance

Hinkley Point C

was proclaimed, the industry is crippled by steep rises in costs and vast delays. So far the renaissance has been a mirage. The new generation of nuclear reactors, which both government and a privatised electricity industry say we need, is to be spearheaded by Hinkley Point in Somerset. It is there that the first French nuclear units to be built in Britain, known as European Pressurised Reactors, are to be built. But, when you look at the plan up close, it is hard to believe that any government could have signed off on it. For the company that plans to operate Hinkley Point C, the French power giant EDF, has been given a guarantee, to last 35 years, that it will be paid far above the current market price for all its power output, come what may. While successive Tory-led governments have been vigorously slashing subsidies for renewable power, they have been hugely distorting the future electricity market to ensure that new nuclear power stations cannot fail. The unit price for power generated at Hinkley Point C is to be set at a figure more than double the current wholesale market price for electricity. But, despite the way the UK market is being rigged in advance to benefit new nuclear power, the French companies at the heart of the Hinkley Point project are facing grave challenges. As far as I can see, the government felt it had to get into bed with the French because the nuclear industry in Britain was too badly damaged by its past failures. Meanwhile France had gone down the road of building vast amounts of nuclear power in the past, so it was thought they had some know-how. The flagship site for the nuclear renaissance in France is Flamanville, on the North West coast. But the EPR being built by the French there is hardly the kind of project Britain should try to copy. It is well over six years late and is 7.2 billion Euros over budget. Another French EPR being built in Finland is ten years late and is also billions over budget. All this was known last summer when Theresa May, on becoming prime minister, called for a pause to reconsider several planned new nuclear plants including Hinkley Point. However, after six weeks or so of reflection, her ministers chose to plough on with Hinkley Point, a project whose economics were “scary”, and “very, very

expensive” according to the TV economics guru Robert Peston. Peston wasn’t hyping it. The National audit office judged that EDF stood to gain getting on for £1 billion in subsidy for every year of the Hinkley contract over 35 years. The French also seem very worried about their own nuclear power plants. There are moves afoot to cut drastically the country’s 75 per cent dependence on nuclear for its electric power. In Britain, the trouble over new nuclear isn’t limited to Hinkley Point and the French. Far from it! What about Moorside, the planned new plant next to Sellafield in Cumbria, which was to be built by an international consortium? Seven years ago, at the outset, several major energy players were involved. The first to bail out, in 2011, was Scottish and Southern Energy. Next to go was Spain’s Iberdrola. Now a French partner, Engie, has also just departed, leaving the Japanese giant Toshiba holding the baby. However, Toshiba is also said to be in deep trouble. The company has grave problems on both sides of the Atlantic. Its American nuclear arm, Westinghouse Electric, has filed for bankruptcy after vast cost over-runs at two plants it has been building in Georgia and South Carolina. The two reactor sites are years behind schedule. So, without even discussing safety, decommissioning, or the long-term disposal of highly radioactive waste, nuclear power is in an awful mess. Yet successive British governments seem addicted to it. So the nuclear renaissance is likely to prove extremely expensive, not for shareholders or banks, but for the majority of British consumers, for many years to come. Julian O’Halloran
