M I alone in feeling a smidgen of sympathy for ATE Farms Ltd. Admittedly some very naughty boys did burn down The Crooked House Pub, Dudley last August just after ATE had purchased it and yes they did bulldoze the remains but the Court order to rebuild it brick by brick in exactly the same spot was a bit unrealistic (see photo of what they have to work with). Currently they are arguing about whether they can rebuild it in a different location but I suspect they are just wasting time in the hope it might go away.

Closer to home I am delighted to report there is good news on the historic pub front. A clever group of New Radnor folk have, after a lot of hard work, managed to save The Radnor Arms. New Radnor has been without a pub since 2016 when an action group was formed that managed to halt the sale of the pub. Then it all went quiet for a while until 2022 when the pub was sold at auction. Since then there has been a whirlwind of activity and the Radnor Arms share offer closed on May 13th having raised £147,755 with architectural heritage funds and the society’s own money and match funding from the Community Ownership fund they now have just over £400,000 which means the Society have enough funds to purchase The Radnor Arms from the generous investor who stumped up the money at auction, pay for expenses such as the asbestos removal, renovate the building and stock and open the 2 bars. Yippee! I can’t wait for it to open so I can resume my favourite tipsy, midnight, moonlight rides through Kinnerton and over the gated road.

In celebration of the good news from New Radnor I decided last Saturday to attempt the gruelling ‘4 Peaks Community Pub Challenge’ to see how the local Community pubs were doing. (It’s a nasty job but someone has to do it). Al and I started off on a sunny early evening at the Boot in Orleton. The 17th century pub had once been the happy heart of the village but more recently had been neglected by the last owner who wanted to redevelop the whole site. It closed in June 2017. The villagers frustrated the plans by having the pub declared an Asset of Community Value. After seeking advice from various organisations they set up a community benefit society to raise investment via a community share issue. The tenant appointed to run the business, Chris, used to manage The Boot Inn back when it was a still doing well and he seems to be very successful, in its new incarnation, providing both posh nosh and a friendly local. At 5pm on a Saturday afternoon the place was buzzing both inside, in the newly renovated bar, and out in the extensive gardens.

Having resisted the temptation to settle in for a long evening at the Boot we headed down the road to The Bell at Yarpole. The Bell has had a number of tenants since the

community bought it in 2018. It closed temporarily in 2021 and again in October 2003, but is now very much back in business with the manager Christina promising a well run cellar and good value pub grub on Friday and Saturday, Sunday lunches plus a warm welcome for locals who need a pint and a pie. We sat out in the front garden and watched the world go by while chatting to two visitors from Shrewsbury who seemed to have intimate knowledge of every pub on the Welsh Borders!

Next stop The Crown at Dilwyn. The Crown which sits opposite the village green in the heart of the village made news by becoming the first parish council owned public house in Herefordshire. Its tenant Maria Franzen has been here for a number of years and has established the pub as home for darts teams, quiz teams, pool team, Royal British Legion and cribbage team, amongst others. It has also supported local community events plus music and open mic nights. On the evening we were there everybody was out on the forecourt enjoying the sunshine and the antics of a large stag do. We settled in with basket of whitebait and a plate of chips and enjoyed the fun.

Last stop the Oxford Arms in Kington on wheelbarrow race evening. The good burgers of Kington had closed the High Street to traffic and were sauntering up and down the road as if it was Las Ramblas. Meanwhile The Oxford Arms was running its own mini Glastonbury in their yard. Ice cream wagon, tea coffee and cakes, wood fired pizzas, tents and a bar. The pub has been purchased by Open Arms Kington CIC whose vision is to establish an inclusive and vibrant community ‘pub & hub’. They secured funding of £40,000 awarded by the Community Lottery Fund and later £250,000 from the Community Ownership Fund which contributed towards the purchase of the Oxford. They want to maintain The Oxford as a cherished Kington ‘local’ and venue but they will need to raise more money to pay for the daunting amount of work the building needs. Meanwhile they are going to put on a series of pop-up bar & local food events throughout the summer.

Hall trawl

WHEN you read this you will probably have voted, but the final results won’t all be in yet. So, has Sir Kier’s Red Wall survived? Have the Scot Nats driven off in a pique in mother-in-law’s stretched camper van? Has Rishi’s suit shrunk further?

Behind the scenes in Whitehall two other polls are taking place: interviews for Mr Speaker, to replace the lugubrious Hoyle, who is retiring to his native Yorkshire; and a temporary home for the Commons to sit for the next couple of years while much-needed refurbishment work is carried out to bring old Pugin’s Palace up to current H&S standards.

Channel 4’s Bake Off co-presenter Paul Hollywood was chosen to adjudicate on the 6 short-listed applicants for the new Speaker: George Galloway, Penny Mordaunt, Rev Paula Vennells, Greg ‘Mr Shouty’ Wallace, unemployed tech-savvy Huw Edwards and Strictly’s Claudia Winkleman. There were to have been seven contenders, but Liz Truss had trouble pushing open the committee room’s swing doors (marked ‘PUSH’). ‘Gorgeous George’ then immediately eliminated himself by telling old shark eyes he wouldn’t remove his battered trilby while sitting on the woolsack. Two down, four to go. The Post Office lady was next to go, because of the black kimono she’d arrived in, bearing a big red Fujitsu logo. Her faltering reply to all

questions - clutching a raw onion: “I simply don’t recall” (known in legal circles as the Doenitz Defence) - also played badly. Huw Edwards was next to quit, then Mr Shouty was off, claiming a clash of engagements with a visit to a Captain Bird’s Eye fish finger factory at Whitby, leaving Mordaunt and Winkleman to go mano-a-mano. But it was not to be. And with all guns blazing HMS Mordaunt swept off the stage.

So where will the intake of ’24 assemble? Here are four favoured locations, selected by an on-poll: the former headquarters of the LCC, moth-balled by Thatcher in 1986; the majestic C14 Westminster Hall; William Wilkins’ Grade II-listed Richmond Terrace, directly opposite 10 Downing Street; and Powell & Moya’s unlovely QE II Conference Centre on Parliament Square, sole surviving remnant of the crackpot idea that Whitehall should undergo comprehensive redevelopment.

One thing is certain: the finished refurbishment will come in late well over budget.

Whole Lotta Lyin’ Goin’ On....

AS the King might have sung with a flick of his forelock and a pivot of his pelvis – Elvis, of course, not Charles III. You can imagine how the young King of rock’n’roll felt while everyone around him was bombarding him with untruth. Ol’ Col. Tom would constantly have been whispering mesmerising pork pies into the boy’s unsophisticated ear, enticing him to even greater depths of cinematic banality to ring the tills in Hollywood – the entertainment industry has always been fertile ground for advanced professional mendacity. But is it even remotely possible that the propagation of untruth in Memphis in 1959 was as rampant as it is today throughout the United States and much of the modern world. We are currently drowning in a sea of lies disseminated by a multiplicity of uncontrolled media, cheer-led by a gang of national and international figures who ignore entirely the supreme importance of veracity or factual justification for any of the inflammatory statements they make – statements which are propagated across innumerable digital platforms; even the ancient medium of print, including shamefully, some British national titles, as well as a scurrilous newcomer, The Light. This publication circulates 100,000 copies monthly across the nation. It is filled from end to end with absurd and grossly implausible conspiracy theories as well as exhortations to put on trial and execute people responsible for administering the Covid vaccine, for crimes against humanity! In the last forty or fifty years several circumstances have emerged to increase the gullibility of a significant proportion of the public. Commercial advertising, for example, which has honed the art of presenting hyperbole to the point where it has become entirely detached from the reality, is just one source that does so almost without impunity.

Also beyond the reach of any meaningful enforcement of laws against deception was the Murdochs’ News of the World, which regularly published entirely fictitious stories, written and cast by journalists who illustrated them with fake, or ‘stunted’ photographs. Even the Sunday Times, at

the start of the first lockdown published a photograph of a man – a stooge of the photographer it emerged – pushing a trolly piled high with toilet rolls from a supermarket to illustrate an alleged shortage of that commodity.

We have become accustomed to politicians telling huge porkies to win over a gullible electorate. Now there are concerns about the ability of AI to project avatars of famous figures and use them to deliver disinformation; ways of preventing this are high on governments’ agendas. But you will recall, not long ago, seeing a figure in a rumpled suit with tousled hair which looked and sounded very much like a former mayor of London, riding around the country in a red bus from which he sprang to bellow monstrous lies about the state of the Nation’s economy after Brexit. No legislation was available to deal with this mendacity at the time, and Britain has suffered fiscal mutilation as a result.

However, there is a real move being made to establish an effective legal antidote to this kind of brazen mangling of the truth. Adam Price, a member of the Welsh parliament (and former Westminster MP) has brought forward legislation in the Senedd, that would create a criminal offence for a politician knowingly to deceive the public. Those found guilty would be temporarily disqualified from sitting in the Senedd or running for office. Some countries already legislate against lying to parliament, but this bill will be the first to bar politicians from lying directly to the public. All four parties in the Senedd are giving the bill their support. We must hope that it is noticed in Westminster, which has an obvious need for it. Across the Atlantic, where the Washington Post claims that Donald Trump made 30,573 false or misleading statements during his tenure as President, there is an overwhelming need for such a law.

FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA (15) – 148 MINS

As a huge fan of the Mad Max franchise – BEYOND THUNDERDROME being my favourite – writer/director George Miller had much to live up to with what’s essentially a prequel and which doesn’t even feature his Maxness, but fortunately he’s cut it, big time. We’re obviously living in a post-apocalyptic desert world where tribes compete for basic resources, most importantly the fuel for their wondrously rackety ‘bikes, cars and trucks and out of a particularly nasty confrontation a young orphan, the titular Furiosa (Ayla Browne) escapes seeded with revenge. After further bloody skirmishes, she grows into a hot-blooded, totally untrusting but wily young woman (Anya Taylor-Joy) out to exact revenge on warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth having a ball) somewhat aided by an under-used Tom Burke (TV’s COMORAN STRIKE) in a series of propulsive, jaw-droppingly brutal set-pieces interspersed by often thinly relevant or engaging narrative twists. THE BIKERIDERS (15) – 116 MINS

Yes, it’s petrolhead heaven this month as my Film of the Year (so far) follows the progress of cool-as-all-hell Johnny (Tom Hardy, PEAKY BLINDERS’ Alfie) from married truck driver to ‘bike racer to leader of a mildly nihilistic ‘bike club and eventually violent gang, the Vandals. It’s loosely based and visually inspired by Danny Lyons emblematic 1968 photo journal chronicling Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club with the impressive and increasingly versatile Jodie Comer (KILLING EVE) as both narrator and girlfriend of Benny (Austin Butler, convincingly shaking off his ELVIS persona) the gang’s taciturn pin-up. The shifting, often internalised dynamics between their members, the scrapes they get into and their drift into bloodshed is crisply told by writer/director Mike Nichols (MUD) who employs regular cinematographer Adam Stone to create a wonderfully moody evocation and indeed includes Michael Shannon from his underrated psychodrama, TAKE SHELTER, as an especially twitchy gang member. Love big, bad ‘bikery? Don’t miss it!

Foyles, Glasbury

HAY Festival was buzzing, bursting at its tented seams on the sunny day that Mr Pernickety and his Lovely Companion visited for a three-course meal of mind-fodder.

Mr P recalls the Fest when it was in a tent in the carpark across the road from the back of the Swan Hotel. Almost every author who appeared on that occasion lived within 25 miles of Hay: Frank Keating, Charlier Nicholl, Matthew Engel, Sam Llewellyn and others. They can be proud that they were the bedrock on which this magnificent event was built. Mr P himself has enjoyed appearing from time to time under other aliases over intervening years, and it is pleasing to know that this book-fest, in this little Marcher town is acknowledged as the best of its kind in the world. Mr P’s only sadness was the absence of the man who from the earliest days inspired and created it all, Peter Florence. He would make instant, gut decisions that were often surprising but always right. He even persuaded an exPresident of the US to appear. He was also one of the most skilled and erudite interviewers that Mr P has ever witnessed; the late David Frost once cited him as his possible successor. It is to be hoped that on the fortieth anniversary of this special happening, he will be there to receive some of the accolade he deserves.

There is no doubt that the show is run supremely well these days. All the facilities are of top spec. There are even wooden seats in the mobile loos. In the guzzling tent, local lads, The Beefy Boys, appeared to take the Gold medal. Mr P would have liked the opportunity to eat at Cotto, but will have wait until he is next in Hereford.

Somewhat after the horse had bolted, he and the LC did visit the restaurant at Foyles, a few miles up the Wye in Glasbury. Mr P had passed it before on an evening when it was all lit up and looking attractive behind a handsome garden with an inviting terrace. He wondered if the owners had called it Foyles to confuse book lovers humming around Hay, seeking the musty aroma of a million assorted works of literature.

They would have been disappointed; there is nothing bookish or even thought-provoking about the interior of the place. However, Mr Pernickety and his companion were warmly welcomed. They ate in a dining-room with hard stone floor and unyielding surfaces all round, with little by way of napery or drapery to soften the sounds. It was furnished with items of an unspecific ‘contemporary’ period, set off by a bizarre assortment of unlovely gift-style household objects, most of which seemed to have been made in the Orient for sale in English “gift outlets”. Mr Pernickety abhors almost any kind of purpose made “gift” on the grounds that it usually serves no other function than that of being a “gift”, which has led to some of the most heinous crimes in the history of product design. It was hard to tell what purpose was served by this disparate clutter of objects, which did no more than set Mr P’s teeth

on edge. His mood was lightened only by the arrival of a spot-on Campari and soda while he and the LC looked at a potentially interesting menu.

The LC ordered a plate of prosciutto with honeydew and cantaloupe melon, toasted pine nuts, balsamic dressing, and basil oil. She enjoyed it and thought the ham particularly good. Mr P loves scallops and ordered what were described as hand dived scallops, served with cauliflower, beetroot and pancetta puree, crispy prosciutto, Granny Smith apple and English peas. The accompaniments were distinctive and enjoyable, but the scallops themselves were disappointingly fried or scalded in oil, a little too much for Mr P’s taste. With his next course he drank a good Chilean wine – a Pinot Noir or a Merlot, he can’t remember which. He ate a free-range duck breast served with braised red cabbage, dauphinoise potato, tender stem broccoli, cavolo nero and black cherry sauce. Disappointingly, the breast of duck tasted distinctly fried and oily, lacking the subtle flavour that this meat can possess. Once again everything around it was enjoyable though the cherry sauce didn’t pack much of a punch. The LC had ordered a dish somewhat ambitiously called Foyles Cordon Bleu, which was a breaded chicken breast with gruyere, Emmental, Black Forest ham, crushed potato, apple and walnut salad and asparagus. She enjoyed this but Mr P helping himself to a mouthful of the chicken felt that it was making no big statement. For a pudding, the LC chose Foyles Baclava which was served with walnut ice cream, pistachio crumb and nougatine. She enjoyed that but the nougatine – a sheet of hard crunchy texture – didn’t add much to the dish. Mr P, on the other hand, enjoyed his Poire Belle Helene, poached in red wine with meringue, dark chocolate sauce and honeycomb ice cream, a fairly delicious combo. The service at dinner was faultless, the people running the place friendly and helpful, but Mr P couldn’t avoid the impression that the chef had created a menu that extended beyond his natural limits, and, for the prices being charged, it was not an outstanding dinner. The bill for two including only one aperitif and one glass of wine was £96.45. While Mr P is reluctant to make discouraging noises, he will return for a second time, only if he hears of definite improvement in the kitchen.

Packham - the scientist rural toffs love to hate

IDON’T watch every nature programme on television. Indeed, on most evenings I am more likely to tune in to a Scandi crime drama. But, on a few evenings in May, I found myself watching the BBC’s Springwatch show.

At times this series seems to confine itself to subjects which are hardly controversial. For instance, the activities of the Dorset Nightjar Study Group are unlikely to set pulses racing or to cause viewers to bombard New Broadcasting House with phone calls or sacks of angry mail.

However, it seems that the best-known presenter of Springwatch, Chris Packham, has acquired the knack of driving some BBC viewers into a state of apoplectic rage.

One publication which has vented its fury with Packham is the rather dull-sounding Country Squire Magazine. I assumed that any anger with Packham in such a mag would focus on his stance over global heating.

But it appears that the Country Squire editorial team are incandescent about other aspects of his BBC nature broadcasts.

I must apologise at once that the row over Packham and Springwatch is hardly this month’s news. Indeed, it is not so much last month’s news as last year’s. But, at the time, it somehow passed me by.

It went roughly like this. Two editorial people at Country Squire blew a gasket to such an extent over Packham that they launched into a tirade in which the naturalist was accused not so much of being wrong on the environment and global warming, but of taking part in quite unrelated and loathsome criminal activities.

Quite where the writers got these ideas from has not been revealed. I must not go too far down the road of detailing what they said without running the risk of repeating the alleged libel.

One imagines that a forthright character like Packham receives a certain amount of hate mail from those who reject his views. But this time the accusations were, in the view of Packham and his supporters, so offensive that they could not be ignored.

So, Packham went to court. In doing so, he was no doubt reassured by the support of a group who were starting to crowd-fund for him, in case either the case was lost, or more likely, Packham won, but faced heavy costs in the High Court.

Packham’s action against Country Squire was not about just one article. The court considered no fewer than 9 articles, 10 social media posts and two videos.

The judge eventually awarded Packham damages of £90,000. He ruled that the defendants made allegations

against the naturalist that were defamatory and untrue. The judge also found that, in the case of these articles, Packham had never been approached for comment.

The judge also noted that one article had mocked Packham’s manner of speaking and made offensive references to his autism.

The judgement was against the editor, Dominic Wightman, and a writer, Nigel Bean. Judge Saini ruled that they had lost all objectivity, because they saw Packham as being part of a left-leaning section of society which included the BBC and animal rights activists.

The case against a third defendant, Paul Read, failed. The judge ruled that, Read, as a proof-reader had played an insignificant role.

Speaking after last year’s hearing, Chris Packham said that he had been subjected to an onslaught of “abuse and hatred, simply because I want reform, I want the world to be a healthier place for wildlife, animal welfare and the environment.”

So are the tirades against Packham, and BBC nature programmes all in the past?

Apparently not. When I looked at the Country Squire website the other day I soon spotted a further vituperative reference to the naturalist in a post from earlier this year.

Some rough language was used about Packham, and about those seen by the publication as being opponents of hunting, shooting and fishing.

However, other groups have leapt in to give their support to Chris Packham. One such organisation is Protect The Wild. It has described the outcome of his high court action as “a win for everyone”.

But, more in sorrow than in anger, it says that the “good news” for the naturalist has come came at the cost of his safety, as Packham “now lives with the constant threat of intimidation and violence”.

SHADOW WORK, COUNSELLING & EXPERIENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC PROCESS Facilitated shadow work is a type of embodied psychotherapy rooted in depth psychology. I work in longer sessions, typically 5-hours. These deep-dive one-to- one sessions allow a shame free space to develop within which to identify, explore and transform those habitual, ingrained or unconscious patterns, beliefs or behaviours that trap us and hold us back from living full and joyful lives. This work holds the potential for deep personal growth, and deep healing and is the place to dive real deep into difficulty and challenge, shame or guilt, your grief, your fear or rage. The holding I offer you is both sensitive and strong, and you are invited to bring anything you wish to our work together. Find out more about shadow work and schedule a free 20-minute consultation at: www.inner-truth.co.uk - Alasdair Kirk - 07792 405 660.
