What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

Barn Dancing W

ENT to a cracking Barn Dance up at Bobby’s place yesterday. Loads of people. Everyone on the dance floor, Cajun Country Revival playing their hearts out. Next day after I’d sobered up, it occured to me Barn Dances may soon be a thing of the past. The problem is the barns. They have changed. Nobody builds barns anymore with dusty hay lofts you can get laid in. Everyone is making monster round bales or plastic bags full of silage. Nobody keeps two goats and a cow in delightful vernacular brick barn with a thatched roof. They want a massive corrugated and steel structure that can hold 150 cows, a John Deere and a muck spreader. Then there is Peregrine and Antoinette who have moved down from London with 1.3 mill in their back pocket from selling their flat in Camden and are hoping that a nice Herefordshire barn conversion will give them plenty of space to breed. And it’s not just barns that are being snapped up as houses. When was the last time you saw a Methodist Chapel without a load of hanging plants in the window and a Skoda Yeti in the yard? (What is it with Skoda Yetis? Suddenly there are hundreds of them around. Are they breeding like Peregrine and Antoinette?) What I’m getting at is there are less and less large spaces available in the country for us to have fun in and the same thing is happening in the towns. Wetherspoons is grabbing all the banks as they close up shop and go online and warehouses, like the barns, are the new groovy places to live. Even Bobby’s place isn’t a real old barn, it’s something he put up to attack large bits of oak in. I think what we might have to do is look into the future and try to spot the next lot of buildings that are going to become obsolete. Perhaps when the electirc car revolution happens there are going to be lots of petrol stations doing nothing or maybe the provisional wing of the vegans will force the closure of all those massive chicken prisons and we can turn them into dance halls. “Come on over baby. We got chicken in the barn” as Jerry Lee Lewis always said.

When I began this rant I wasn’t aware it was leading anywhere in particular, but I then realised it is the perfect introduction to a rather wonderful Presteigne plan that’s in the pipeline. A couple of years ago when some people were pricing up a marquee for an event in Presteigne, Owen Rimington said “Why don’t we get someone to put up a Dutch barn on Wentes Meadow and then all the local activities have covered space, with electrics they can use without having to hire in marquees and generators etc”. Then last year at Sheep Music’s ‘Dawn of the Shed’, a shed building competition on Wentes Meadow, it became obvious that all the talent was there to build it and so was born the Wentes Meadow Community Barn proposal designed by Owen and backed by The Town Council and Sheep Music. The idea is for a simple open plan building holding up to 250 people that can be used in conjunction with the existing buildings on Wentes Meadow to provide an instant framework for event organisers.

The barn will be built by a team of volunteers led by experienced professional local builders. The only problem is raising the dosh, approximately £42,000 is required but already The Town Council and Sheep Music have put their hands in their pockets and a regeneration grant has been applied for. If you want to get involved or support the project then contact Sheep Music info@sheep-music.co.uk or have alook at the website: sheep-music.co.uk/community-barn

We take no responsibility for the veracity of the information herein Clare Edwards The Lodge, Westhide, Hereford, HR1 3RQ Tel: 01432 850444

Also while I’m about it, I must mention Ben’s lovely barn at Radnorshire Ales Brewery in New Radnor, it’s even got a tailor-made dance floor!

Perhaps things aren’s so bleak after all, as long as we have people like Owen who can think round corners, then we can enjoy theatre, kids events, outdoor films and even the occasional Cajun band!

letters Dear Editor, I always enjoy Mr Pernickety’s column, particularly his acerbic comments on grammar and syntax, and found myself in complete accord with his comments on that essential item of punctuation the apostrophe: it denotes the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you’re shit. However I was astonished to see him use the word “ignorami” in the same article. As anyone familiar with the Mitchell & Webb ‘Grammar Nazi’ sketch will tell you, “ignoramus” is derived from the Latin word meaning “we do not know”. The plural, if one feels the necessity to use one, should be “ignoramuses”. Or perhaps he was being ironic..? Yours respectfully, Nick Passmore

Aaargh! No! Let there be one pub in Powys without muzak. You know perfectly well that it would not be Miles Davis or JS but cover versions of 90’s pop songs on a loop that the staff would have to endure for the whole evening. And, anyway, if it were Miles or JS then surely you would want to listen to it whereas you have gone to the pub to meet with and talk to your friends. If you have no friends then I suggest you buy an MP 3 player or similar and take with you the music you want to listen to while supping your pint of ‘Old Bedsocks’.

To the editor, I was most surprised that Mr. Pernickety’s review in your May issue described the barmaid as blond. The correct form when just as an adjective or noun when referring to a woman is blonde. See Fowler’s Modern English Usage. Mr. E.(ven)M.(ore) Pernickety

When muzak was introduced to my bank I was told in one branch that it was to keep the customers calm. I had banked with them for fifty year and had never seen an uncalm customer. In the second branch I used I was told that it was to ensure privacy. i) people do not give sensitive info to the teller. If they had to the presence of the glass screen and the muzak would ensure that they needed to speak loudly enough to be heard by anyone close by, ii) over millenia animals have found it useful to be able to recognize the sound of their own species; this applies also to humans. We would all hear/listen to a human voice rather than cover versions of 90’s pop songs on a loop. Read: The malls are alive with the sound of Muzak by Alan Yuhas. Read: Let us give silent thanks for M&S’s decision to switch off the music by Anne Perkins Read: Finally, proof that Christmas songs really do your head in by Arwa Mahdawi

Dear editor I was under the impression that all players of stringed instruments were left-handed. They do all the clever stuff - forming the precise notes and chords - with their left hands. Their right hands just do the easy-peasy stuff - scraping bowfuls of horsehair up and down the catgut of violins etc or strumming their fingers across the strings of guitars, ukes and mandolins. There’s no need for left-handed pianos because the left and right hands are equally important and some of us can even play cross-handed. Cheers Frank Cosgrove

This country has been brainwashed by Squier’s invention which, as Spike Milligan famously said, no one wanted or needed. Muzak is played in pubs, restaurants, cafés, shops, banks, hotels, lifts, toilets, spas, swimming pools, hospitals, dental surgeries, waiting rooms, any public place. It is even played in sports stadia as if watching top athletes break records was not entertaining enough.

Also, be aware that the societies for the blind, the deaf and the autistic have all pointed out that muzal make life more difficult for their members. You would have thought that this would have been enough to get every supermaket to turn off its muzak but no. Read: Asda held a quiet hour by Simon Jenkins. I am a member of Pipedown http://pipedown.org.uk. Perhaps, with your help, we could make Powys the first quiet county in the UK. Dorothy Haughton

cinema THE BOOKSHOP (12A) In a part of Britain where bookishness is almost a lifestyle – indeed a certain Hay-on-Wye cinema has been screening it for weeks – the appeal of Elegy director Isabel Coixet’s gentle yet agreeably subversive drama is assured. Adapted from Penelope Fitzgerald’s eponymous 1978 novel it concerns war widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) efforts to turn a rundown property on the Suffolk coast into, yes, a bookshop. In this she is hampered by an imperious Violet Gamart, (Coixet veteran Patricia Clarkson with a slightly dodgy accent) who wants the place for herself, but supported by wealthy if rumour-blighted recluse, Edmund Brundish (Bill Nighy). The outcome is not hard to guess, but apart from the joy of Mortimer and Nighy’s central performances – all too rarely in the same scene – like Fitzgerald’s rather prescient original, The Bookshop reminds us that in an era of fake news and instant digital gratification literature remains a faithful balm. ON CHESIL BEACH (15) Like The Bookshop this is another adaptation of a successful period novel, in this case Ian McEwan’s account of the marriage between posh young violinist Florence (Saoirse Ronan – Ladybird, Hanna) and the humbler Edward (Billy Howle – The Sense of an Ending) who after a brief university romance marry as virgins and spend an excruciating wedding night on their Dorset coast honeymoon. In his film debut, theatre director Dominic Cooke uses McEwan’s own flashback-laden script to deftly illustrate the reasons for Edward and Florence’s embarrassing dilemma, introducing us to their two, very disparate sets of parents along the way, most notably Ann-Marie Duff as Edward’s damaged mother and Samuel West as Florence’s irascible, industrialist dad. In so doing we learn much about class divides and indeed sexual mores in Britain before the 1960s began to swing, nicely abetted by cinematographer Sean Bobbit’s windswept backdrops.

BEAST (15) Low-budget British thrillers don’t always, or even often, prove convincing big-screen fare but Michael Pearce’s debut feature set on his native Jersey happily avoids the traps of simplistic, t.v-inclined plotting and limited-range acting. A riveting Jesse Buckley (BBCtv’s Woman in White) plays Moll, the headstrong daughter of a marvelously manipulative, intolerant Geraldine James who hooks up with taciturn but equally willful poacher Pascal (Johnny Flynn (Clouds of Sils Maria), after an illicit night out that nearly got nasty. As Moll falls big-time for Pascal if only, but not only as an act of rebellion, we learn that they both have dark histories which inform their individual and joint responses to a series of brutal murders. Pearce, working from his own script builds a beguiling tension on an island that feels unsettlingly claustrophobic until a suitably shocking denouement. 6 June LE CORSAIRE All’Opera. E

VERY historic town in Britain has been suffering an apparently relentless decline in the number of pubs or ale houses they can support. This is generally perceived as a bad thing. To Mr Pernickety, what matters is not the quantity of pubs, but the quality of those that remain. Many of those that have died were seedy, smelly little dumps that don’t deserve to be missed. But once in a while comes a re-opening or, in the case of The Blood Bay in Ludlow’s picturesque High Street, a new opening of a much welcomed traditional town pub. Mr John Saxon (proprietor and editor of the pleasingly irregular Ludlow Ledger newspaper) has already put his small, three-days-a-week parlour pub, The Dog Hangs Well firmly on the map in Corve Street; now he has taken over the former newsagents, where Mr P’s Lovely Companion was once startled late one night by the sight, through well lit windows, of the owner (and subsequent Mayor of Ludlow) stripped to his ample waist, heaving stock around. Cleverly and with a fine eye for detail and no resort to the ersatz, Mr Saxon has created a gem of a small Victorian town pub using reclaimed bars and panelling from deceased London pubs and wall paper to match those found a few layers down when the walls were stripped back. Even the ceiling as a faint, nostalgiainducing hint of nicotine to it. The beers offered are a fine Indian pale ale (4.2%) and a traditional porter brewed to Victorian recipes Mr Saxon has found. It is a joyous place, where not a wide-screen TV, juke box or fruit machine are to be seen, unlike the interior of Leominster’s White Lion which Mr P has reviewed this month. The White Lion is a 16th century building at the south end of Etnam Street, hard by the Hereford-Shrewsbury railway. Like most other edifices of its age, it has been hacked about and added to over the centuries, for several of which it is believed to have been a pub one of the first that travellers would have encountered crossing the nearby River Arrow into the town. The noble moulded breastsummers that support the ceiling of the bar are reassuringly hefty and lend an obvious antiquity to the place, despite the several wide screens showing

back to back music videos, digital juke boxes and vast flashing gaming machines. These things, normally a source of irritation to old flatulanti like Mr P, oddly didn’t feel offensive in this busy, confident town pub that clearly sets out to serve its customers professionally and without pretension. The place has a good reputation among the locals in a way which always interests Mr Pernickety. Even at lunchtime on a Monday, it was quietly humming. From a menu offering for the most part everyday pub food, Mr P decided to try something that might require a little more cooking than the mixed grills or steak ‘n’ chips. He ordered a Braised Beef in Lancaster Sauce and, to start, what was billed as Traditional Prawn Cocktail. Mr P, always a fan of Abigail’s Party kitsch looked forward to being served a large wine glass stuffed full of prawns, smothered in pink Thousand Islands dressing with a few slivers of shredded lettuce on top. To his disappointment he received a normal plate holding a scattered tump of prawns with some slices of (perfectly good) buttered brown bread and a little salad, with no more than a hint of dressing. The prawns were well enough, but lacked that special kitschiness Mr P had been expecting. Having had a half pint of Butty Bach while he perused the menu, he asked about wine to drink with his main course. There were two on offer, Red or White. He chose red and was given a glass of Merlot that worked well with the short rib of beef with which he was next presented. Mr P was delighted to find that whoever wields the skillet in the White Lion kitchen was quite capable of producing a succulent chunk of meat of pleasing texture, dressed in a rich ale sauce. It sat upon a bed of buttery mashed potato, accompanied by not-toosoggy cabbage and broccoli, with some slightly senior carrots, all for a tenner (or what they called £9.95). While the White Lion will never find itself a stop de rigeur on the International Foodies’ Itinerary, Mr P would suggest it to any curious traveller as a good example of a genuine and enjoyable pub in an ancient Herefordshire borough. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots Biomass – a licence to print money and pollute? I

N the last year or two wind and solar power have been breaking records for power generation. Over the early May bank holiday, solar generation again hit new peaks in Britain. But the advance of renewables has been bracketed with a form of generation that is in my view much more questionable - biomass. For most environmentalists, coal is among the worst of fossil fuels, causing harmful air pollution and a high output of greenhouse gases. But, as some investors scramble to ditch fossil fuels, you face tough questions if you have a coal fired power plant that could become a stranded asset. The owners of one such plant, Drax in Yorkshire, opted to move gradually to burn wood instead. Such organic material, when used to generate power, is known as biomass. But Britain hasn’t got nearly enough woodland to feed even one big biomass power plant. So, millions of tonnes of wood are being shipped into Britain each year in the form of pellets from forests in America. This energy process is claimed to be renewable. In moving to biomass, Drax Power has been given a huge leg-up. Year after year it has been receiving hundreds of millions of pounds in government subsidies. Of course, consumers will foot the bill for that support. The justification for this is that biomass is “carbon neutral”. Even a child could tell you that burning wood produces high carbon dioxide emissions. But both the biomass industry and the government have made a gigantic scientific assumption. They claim that the CO2 from burning biomass will soon be sucked out of the air by other trees that will be growing to replace those burned, and that the greenhouse gas emissions have thus been negated. Andy Koss of Drax Power told Channel 4’s Dispatches that the bulk of material it burns is waste and residue wood and meets strict sustainability standards. But do their calculations include the emissions from their plant near Selby? “We don’t count that. The government doesn’t count that,” said the Drax chief, “...because if we are sourcing (wood)…from working forests, where there is more growth than is being harvested, we see the carbon as being reabsorbed.” However, last year biomass generation ran into a blast of cold air from the very pukka think tank Chatham House. In a detailed study, researcher Duncan Brack concluded that “…biomass, when burnt, emits more carbon dioxide per unit of energy than most fossil fuels.” How was this consistent with the government’s climate

Drax Power Station

change policies, asked Brack. “Only by completely ignoring the carbon emitted when the wood is burnt.” Drax Power counter-attacked, inviting an environmental advisor, Tony Juniper, to America to film its forestry and wood pellet operations. He duly gave them a broadly clean bill of health. His film has moody shots of him wandering through forests, and clips from workers whose jobs appear to depend on the wood pellet trade. “The biomass sustainability story” can be viewed online. But the importation to Europe of wood pellets from south eastern US states has caused deep unhappiness among American campaign groups. The Dogwood Alliance speaks of the wood pellet trade inflicting “particulate pollution on local communities and degrading irreplaceable, natural forests”. However, in Europe, government support for burning biomass as a way of meeting “renewable” energy targets, has been growing. The EU is working on new a directive in this area. Reports say Britain has argued for countries and companies gaining credits from felling whole trees as well as using woody wastes. In December, a group of top scientific experts decided enough was enough. Led by Britain’s former government chief scientist, Professor John Beddington, they issued an urgent warning that the EU plans would speed up climate change and cause devastation to forests. They claimed that from biomass burning, “…the net effect – as many studies have shown – will be to increase global warming for decades to centuries…” Until recently it seemed there was some common ground between the biomass industry and climate campaigners. Both sides agreed that if only waste wood was burned then the greenhouse gas emissions could be ignored. However, in a paper out this year in Environmental Research Letters, US researcher Mary Booth PhD seeks to explode that claim. She concludes that power plants burning wood chips and pellets “are a net source of carbon pollution in the coming decades just when it is most urgent to reduce emissions”. So far I have seen no counterblast to her work from the biomass industry. Julian O’Halloran
