Pub to Pub Vol. 2 - The Flatlands A
S promised here is Volume 2 of Pete’s fab Pub to Pub cycle routes guide, especially compiled for people like you who have borrowed an ill-fitting bike, that has been sitting in someone’s shed for five years. Firstly, there are a couple of things you can do to make the experience a bit more pleasant. Actually the best thing you can do is fit a bloody great electric motor (www.Cyclotricity. com), but failing that - PUMP up the tyres and OIL the chain. These routes are not that long and either flat or fairly flat, but it’s a good idea to check the wind speed and direction before setting off. A stiff wind can be as hard work as a 1 in 4 hill if it’s blowing in your face! So here goes and let’s start with one that is as flat as a pancake. By the way, some people have criticised me for not explaining how you get to these bike rides in the first place. So just try and remember, I am NOT your mum!
1. Brecon to the Royal Oak at Pencelli and The Star at Talybont Start off at Theatr Brycheiniog by the canal basin and head off down the canal. Luckily it only goes one way so you can’t go wrong and as I said, this ride is very flat, so feel free to take the dog and the kids and Uncle Bert (with the bad knee). The first bit on the canal is where everyone in Brecon goes for an after dinner stroll or to walk the dog, so it is a bit busy but it soon thins out. About ½ a mile out of town you will hit the first bridge which is a dual carriageway carrying the A40 and then another ½ a mile will get you to the next bridge which is the B4558. At this point the canal does a massive S-bend so you can chop off the corner by going onto the bridge (the B4558) and turning right. After a short distance you will come to a right fork signpost Llanfrynach and follow that road into the village. The pub at Llanfrynach is closed (boo-hoo). The third right turn in the village will put you on a very very quiet lane that will lead you to the village of Pencelli and their pub is the Royal Oak with a garden that overlooks the canal and some very reasonably priced pub grub. From there you can just hop back onto the canal path and follow it all the way to Talybont. Talybont, a village with about three people in it has three pubs and a licenced restaurant. I have no idea which one you should choose so I asked Hugh who lives just up the road. Hugh says “The Star is an independent boozer with a zillion ales. If you want posh food, go to the Travellers, if you want chips and keg, The White Hart and if you want a landlord with a bright green Marcos go to the other one”. Vital Statistics 7 miles. 0ft up. 0ft down.
2. The Stagg at Titley to The New Inn, Pembridge Just up the road from Presteigne this is a favourite with P.E.D.A.L.*. Begin at The Stagg which over twenty years has built up a reputation as THE best gastro pub around. Even if you don’t fancy shelling out for a proper three-course job, the bar snacks are very posh and Email: info@broadsheep.com the beers, wines, excellent and the garden is a pretty nice place to watch the world go by. Website: www.broadsheep.com Head off from The Stagg on the main road to Kington and after ¼ mile turn left signposted to Lyonshall. Then after 100 yards don’t follow the road round to the right, go straight on up a little lane that you can stay on all the way to Court of Noke (where they have the Spring Greens Festival). There is a bit of a hill at the beginning of that lane but once you have pushed your bike up that, it’s pretty easy going all the way to Pembridge. At the Court of Noke junction go left and then immediately right and this will take you to another junction by what used to be Pembridge Station. Turn right and that leads you into Pembridge. A cafe, a restaurant and two pubs including The New Inn where you can sit outside and get fed massive plates of good value nosh by the very friendly sisters, Jane and Rosie who run this excellent half-timbered pub. Vital Statistics 5.6 miles. 157ft up. 354ft down.
* P.E.D.A.L. - Presteigne E-bikes, Drunks And Layabouts.
3. The White Lion, Ross-on-Wye to The New Harp Inn, Hoarwithy This ride starts off at The White Lion by the river in Ross. Sitting in the garden by the river with a pint and a scotch egg, I can’t really be bothered to go anywhere. Oh well, I suppose we’d better make the effort as long as there are not too many hills. Up to the roundabout on the A40. Make the kids push their bikes across, it’s really dangerous. Head off towards Hereford on the A49 but then, second turning fork right signposted Sellack and Hoarwithy. Then a gentle five mile cycle down that road possibly stopping at the rather posh Loughpool at Sellack for a pint until you get to Hoarwithy. Flop down in the garden out the front of The New Harp Inn. I am definitely not going anywhere else today. Vital Statistics 5 miles. 180ft up. 213ft down 4. The Bells Inn, Almeley via Eardisley to Hay-on-Wye This is a very gentle beast compared with last months ride from The Bridge, Michaelchurch Escley. The Bells is a brilliant place to start a ride as apart from being a friendly little pub, one side of the pub is a grocer come deli and you can stock up on pies and pop to take with you. Come out of the pub car park, turn left then first right and after a few hundred yards left again and then you are on the road to Eardisley. 2½ miles to Eardisley, which must set you up for a quick break at the Tram or the New Strand for a pint and a copy of Broad Sheep. Then down the lane next to the Tram and just follow that lane all the way to Whitney on Wye. Then you have to turn right on to the A438 but only for a few hundred yards. Then you scurry left onto the toll bridge (bikes are free) and then a lovely rolling ride through Clifford to Hay, where a cornucopia of tourist delights awaits you! Vital Statistics 9.8 miles. 270ft up. 217ft down. Cover pic: Grandmaster Flash, Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury - 16 June

architecture
Call this Architecture? E ighty-eight years ago, in a move that reeked of self-protection, a group of British architects successfully lobbied Parliament for the creation of a body which came to be known as the Architects Registration Council of the United Kingdom (ARCUK). Among other things, it established under law that designers of buildings in Britain could not hold themselves out as ‘architects’ without appropriate qualifications. It was ‘goodbye’ to all those latter day James Burtons and Thomas Cubitts, who had to revert to being builders. In February, Herefordshire Council gave planning consent for a 178-unit student accommodation block, to be built alongside Hereford’s Grade II-listed railway station, as the new university’s first halls of residence. The council’s cabinet member for contracts and assets could barely contain his delight at the decision. Councillor Bramer described it as “tremendous news….and a wonderful example of a collaborative development….which will deliver one of the most vibrant and well-designed student accommodation projects in the country.” I think he must have been looking at a different set of drawings to the ones I saw on the planning application. The four- and five-storey building will be close to the site of the former Rockfield DIY store, needlessly demolished in 2013 on the spurious grounds that the building stood in the path of the council’s projected £25-million Link Road. When the dual carriageway’s route was subsequently realigned, it was discovered that the store shouldn’t have been closed down after all. But by then the Wolverson family had banked the settlement. To hide its blushes, Herefordshire Council hastily established a shoppers’ car park. Always a nice little earner. Across Europe, the establishment of impressive university halls of residence has been a centuries-old tradition. Architecture at its finest. Henley Halebrown’s 2018 Stirling Prize contender Chadwick Hall, for the University of Roehampton, is an outstanding example. It stands in the grounds of the listed late-18th century Downshire House (so, like Hereford, it had a historic neighbour to respect). Unreservedly Modernist - yet Chadwick Hall, (photo: Nick Kane)
Hereford Station’s new neighbour
timeless - with impeccably detailed dark red brickwork. What student wouldn’t want to begin their university education living in such an attractive building? So what is there to say, on the architectural credit side of the balance sheet, for Hereford’s overbearing blockhouse? Do we perceive any stylistic antecedents from the neighbouring Gothic Revival railway station? Err, no, apart from its cluster of eight steeply pitched roofs. Do the building’s gaunt brick facades mimic similar treatments elsewhere in the city? Not really, apart from Hereford’s notorious Workhouse. Was it the winner of an architectural design competition? Err, no. Herefordshire Council has a marked antipathy for competitions (the last one it organised was almost 20 years ago). This is especially disappointing, given that to the extreme west of the site, work will soon be starting on the Leggo-like Hereford Medical Centre (see Broad Sheep; August 2018), effectively book-ending R.E. Johnson’s majestic 1858 railway station with two items of architectural mediocrity. ARCUK today is a comatose guard dog, oblivious of the myriad travesties now masquerading as ‘architecture’. Maybe 2019 should see Parliamentary protection enacted for the word ‘architecture’ itself. Nick Jones
Letters Dear Sir/Madam,
With a number of residents in Presteigne disturbed, distressed and sleep-deprived due to a constant, high(ish) pitch hum emanating from Presteigne industrial estate since the Autumn 2018, I write, for the purpose of helping to remedy the problem, to suggest anyone else so affected contact me for further information and/or share their experiences on pnanderson@gmx.co.uk or 01544 262 110 (afternoons). Yours faithfully,

Want to have a say in any local housing development? P
EOPLE living in the vicinity of the proposed large housing development at Three Elms on the western edge of Hereford have been consulted on the potential layout of the site, BUT… They are aware that whatever is agreed at outline planning stage may be changed by those developing the site piecemeal over the following years. They therefore wanted a Plan B, which was to establish a Community Land Trust (CLT) that could help influence the future development and hopefully undertake some of it in a way that would really involve the local community. Not only has Hereford Community Land Trust been formed, but the Herefordshire Centre for Community-Led Housing has also been established, courtesy of some central government funding, which can help groups wishing to develop community-led housing elsewhere in the county. Similar support is available in Shropshire. CLTs acquire the land on which homes are then built, homes which reflect the size and type that the community feels are required. These are usually low cost homes (to own or rent) so that these are more likely to be in reach of local people who can’t compete with those ‘from off’ moving to the Marches having sold homes in the south-east, notably, worth a Marches’ fortune. These can include starter homes for young families who help keep communities and local schools flourishing. Or accessible homes for the elderly who wish to stay in the area they have known and contributed to for years which may be built and sold with local covenants to ensure that when someone moves on, another local person can benefit. It may be that several people wish to come together to build homes that have some communal facility which encourages mutual support over the years. Some may wish to help actually construct their homes, providing what is called ‘sweat equity’ so as to reduce the purchase cost that way. As these examples show, CLTs can be flexible to suit local wishes. But there is a downside: it takes time. It takes time to agree what housing to focus on, to find the best site, to organise the funding, to gain planning permission, and to build. But you essentially get what you want, and that is the big difference to most housing developments.
their pub. Now they are considering how to provide some affordable housing in the village. Other Local CLTs for housing include Bishop’s Castle who identified a need for affordable accommodation for local workers and built 2 small homes in the town. They too are now working on another project, converting another building to provide more, much needed, rental accommodation. Currently the Community Housing Fund offers groups opportunities to get projects off the ground with grants at all stages of development. This together with advice from the Centre is kick-starting a move for communities to provide for local housing need themselves. These developments enhance communities in many ways: for example, the build process often boosts the local economy by employing local contractors and consultants; the buildings themselves are often designed in keeping with local styles and to a high sustainable specification which ensures that living costs are cheaper for residents and kinder to the environment. So, what can you do? Hereford CLT is actively looking for a small site on which to build a scheme to give it a track record so as to be able to take on a subsequent bigger project, possibly at Three Elms. If you know of a piece of land that might be available, or someone who might own such, then please contact: Andy Johnson (andyjohnson@phonecoop.coop, 01544 327344) If you’re interested in exploring possibilities in your community, simply like the idea and want to know more, want to encourage our county councils to be more pro-active on this front, wish to provide contact details in case you might like to invest in a scheme (money might need to be tied up for 5 or more years, but interest payments are better than those on offer from banks and building societies), then contact Nancy Winfield 07999 925545 hcclh.pm@gmail.com www.hcclh.org.uk. For the broader picture on CLH the best website is www.communityledhomes.org.uk Andy Johnson
There are now some 500 CLTs across the country, most of which have created housing but some also save community shops and pubs from closure and even support local enterprise such as a bakery or community energy scheme. The core legal principle is that a CLT holds land in perpetuity for the benefit of the community. Often one successful project leads to more. Yarpole has a community shop, and recently successfully purchased

cinema Music is the Food of Movies
O
KAY, the above title is somewhat jokey, but not entirely misleading inasmuch that films based on musical subjects, not to mention those that are flat-out all-singing, all-dancing musicals, have long been a reliable ingredient for box office success. In recent years the former category has included such stellar examples as the fabulous Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper remake of A STAR IS BORN, sixty-somethings Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep not entirely credibly playing fading rockstars in WHAT MASIE KNEW and RICKI & THE FLASH respectively, and in an engaging if underappreciated (?!) genre, the low-budget punk rock horrorshow that was GREEN ROOM, co-starring an especially unpleasant 76 year-old Patrick Stewart (though, obviously not as a punk rocker). As far as full-blown musicals are concerned, well of course there have been a brace of MAMA MIAs, unlikely songbirds Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone hoofing their way through the highly entertaining LA LA LAND, and equally unlikely songbirds Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman warbling as best they can in LES MISERABLES. Bohemian Rhapsody
And right now we have yet more and largely successful efforts to mine audiences’ evidently insatiable appetite for a good tune and a story well told, most notably BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY which is part musical, part biopic and overall a worthy four time Oscar winner. Even those who are not fans of Queen’s pomp-rock oeuvre should try and catch this truly compelling account of what is really the story of hedonistic, out-of-the-closet frontman Freddie Mercury (a convincing Rami Malek), culminating with their majestic finale at 1985 when Mercury (neé Zanzibarian student Farrokh Bulsara) was already dying of an HIVrelated illness. That 20 minute Live Aid concert footage is actually the real band and it’s testimony to Malik and his fellow actors, and of course director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN APOCALYPSE) that the film’s recreated performances are just about as convincing.
20
A near contemporary of Mercury, namely Elton John, is the subject of director Dexter Fletcher’s ROCKETMAN, named, you’ll recall, after one of the singer/songwriter’s greatest hits. You may recall that Fletcher coincidentally was called in to complete the aforementioned BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY after Brian Singer fell out with that film’s producers, and he also has form with larger-than-life characters via his EDDIE THE EAGLE biopic. Advance word on his latest effort is that Taron Egerton (the KINGSMAN series) as Pinner pianoman Reg Dwight, who later became the
Rocketman
multi-platinum superstar is utterly convincing and Richard Madden, notable in BBCtv’s BODYGUARD) has bulked up nicely to become John’s fiery manager, John Reid, and a plethora of sex’n’drugs’n’rock’n’roll make this a very entertaining watch. Which obviously bodes well for biopics of two other rock legends Keith Moon and David Bowie that are already in the works. However I must end with a more obscure musical hero – well of mine, anyway – who is the subject of Swedish writer/director Malik Bendjeilloul’s sole work, SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN which will receive a rare outing at the Hive, Belmont this month. The titular ‘Sugarman’ was a Detroit-based Mexican folk-rocker, Sixto Rodriguez, who made two well-reviewed but appallingly marketed albums in the early 1970s – both recorded in London, fact fans – before promptly disappearing… and to a rumoured suicide. He had instead become a construction worker but unbeknownst to him in that pre-internet era, his records became huge hits in South Africa where he was heralded as the ‘new Dylan’ and outsold Elvis. Bendjeilloul’s film follows two of his true believer fans seeking him out which eventually enabled the philosophically modest Rodriguez to rediscover his musical ambitions. Ultimately it’s a hugely moving film about the ephemeral nature of stardom that showcases the singer’s wonderful songs, not least the achingly beautiful ‘Crucify Your Mind’ which, once again trivia lovers, also played over the title sequence of another great indie film about the vagaries of fate, 2018’s AMERICAN ANIMALS. Bleddfa Centre Manager
Part-time: 2-3 days per week Salary (flexible) ÂŁ10-12,000
We are looking for a highly motivated and very well-organised manager to look after the Bleddfa Centre. Established forty years ago in rural mid-Wales, the Centre’s mission is to explore creativity and promote well-being. It has a long-held reputation as a centre for story-telling and meditation. This is being extended to involve a wider range of art forms. The Centre Manager will be responsible for the running of the Centre and will work with the Board of Trustees and Programme Director to realise our programme of exhibitions, workshops, talks, retreats and community events. An interest in the Arts is important; but the main qualities sought by the Trustees are organisational flair, commitment and an outgoing, friendly spirit. This is an exceptional opportunity to ensure the continuing success of a very special place. The Centre requires regular attendance, but some home-working is feasible.

The Castle Hotel, Hereford
T
HE Green Dragon, on Hereford’s Broad Street was mouldering into a sad and shameful state for many years. A formerly grand establishment, it had reigned as the City’s leading hotel for a century or so until by the 1990s it seemed to have lost its way and all confidence. Trade dwindled as it passed through the hands of several different hotel chains until, under its last owner, it had become so knackered it reached a nadir with the air and aroma of a low-grade old folks’ home. When Mr Pernickety reviewed the dining room (then inexplicably called John Spice’s International Restaurant) in a previous edition of the Woolly Organ, he concluded that the dinner he’d been served was the most revolting that he’d eaten in his lifetime (including school dinners) and he would not have allowed his dog to eat there. He was therefore delighted to read last year that the place had been bought and was to be the subject of fairly substantial investment and refurbishment to the standards of a ‘boutique’ hotel, something along the lines of an Hotel du Vin. When he saw that, while it was still being revitalized, it was still operating, he thought it his duty to go along and see how things were. It turned out that he was too early by three or four months, when all the changes will have been completed. The new management, not wanting to make a number of long-serving staff redundant, decided to continue operating, although this meant taking a risk by letting punters in long before the new identity was established. While a number of the bedrooms were excitingly spruced up and ready to go, the old lounge was a building site and the finely panelled dining room still full of the hideous Formica tables and slippery nylon chairs that infested it when it was John Spice’s. There was a new chef in the kitchen, but he had just arrived and was still trying to make sense of his equipment. Mr P’s Lovely Companion, scrupulously fair-minded, took the view that reviewing the place in these circumstances wouldn’t reflect the ultimate aspirations of the new management, and they abandoned their table.
26
They decided instead to visit the Castle House Hotel on the far side of the cathedral. Mr P hadn’t been there for years, but was aware that that this place, too had twice changed hands. It had first been reinvented under the auspices of Dutch woman, Monique Heijn, by then the wife of a Dutch retailing magnate, Albert Heijn. Mrs Heijn had formerly been married to two Herefordshire men – a farmer and a lawyer (but not at the same time) and she’d come back to the county with her new husband to show him what a fine place it was to live and, perhaps to do a bit of flaunting. In a flurry of development, she and her husband bought, built and refurbished dozens of major properties in the city, including the old dilapidated motorcycle dealers by the bridge which was turned into the Left Bank – a
complex of restaurants, bars and shops. Glamorously conceived and opened in 2000, they never really found traction with the local community and were gradually disposed of, the Left Bank being sold by the Heijns in 2007. It always looked like a vanity project and it quietly fell into disuse within fifteen years of its opening. When Mrs Heijn bought the Castle Pool Hotel, she renamed it the Castle House Hotel and spent tons of money turning the bedrooms into what were popularly described at the time as Tarts’ Parlours. The hotel was subsequently also sold to a family of local farmers, who seem successfully to have undone most of Mrs Heijn’s excesses. By the time Mr P and the LC arrived it was too late to start a full-blown dinner in the dining-room. They chose to have a bar meal (prepared in any case by the same kitchen) and base their appraisal on that. The small bar is an agreeable space with some characterful furnishings and a ‘clubby’ ambience. They shared a starter of asparagus, Hollandaise sauce and smoked salmon – the asparagus delicately cooked and pleasingly tender, prompting appreciative smiles and some lip-smacking. The LC’s main course of bream was exemplary, very fresh and well cooked; Mr P enjoyed his mouthfuls. He also enjoyed a sirloin steak which he thought, erroneously as it turned out, had been reared on the owners’ farm – the sort of vertical connection he appreciates. Nevertheless, it was a good, flavoursome piece of meat, correctly cooked, but let down by an insipid pepper sauce. For a pudding, they shared a pear tart which they couldn’t fault. Mr P drank a couple of glasses of pleasing Primitivo, and they were pleased by the affability of the young men who served them (despite a few inevitable ‘Enjoys!’) and when they requested that the silence and the intermittent sound of an electric glass washer be replaced with some tasteful jazz, this was immediately and willingly achieved – Hurrah. Mr P looks forward to trying the more elaborate restaurant on another occasion.

F this issue of Broad Sheep reaches you quickly you may just be in time to catch the return visit to St Laurence’s Parish Church in Ludlow on 1 June of pianist Roman Kosyakov, who caused a minor sensation last year with the quality of his recital on the church’s new Steinway. Roman is a graduate of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and is now studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. In this year’s Ludlow lunchtime recital, starting at 1 pm, he will play preludes by Sergei Rachmaninov and a sonata by Samuel Barber. Two young organists from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Callum Alger and Joshua Roebuck, will visit St Laurence’s a fortnight later, also at 1 pm, to perform works by Elgar, Bach, Franck and Duruflé that are sure to display the church’s historic Snetzler organ to dazzling effect. Entry to both these recitals is free with a retiring collection. The five-voice female vocal group Papagena takes its name from one of the most appealing characters in Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. They will give an evening concert at St Laurence’s Ludlow on Friday 21 June at 7.30pm. Weaving together classical music, medieval chants, folk and contemporary ballads and new commissions from around the world, Papagena’s programme ‘Nuns and Roses’ ranges from 12th-century abbess Hildegard of Bingen to Imogen Heap, Purcell, Scarlatti and Russian orthodox hymns to Norwegian lullabies, Caitlin Moran’s hilarious take on Rudyard Kipling’s poem ‘If …’ and a new cover version of ‘Sweet child of mine’. Tickets cost £12 (under 18s free) from Ludlow Assembly Rooms (www.ludlowassemblyrooms. co.uk 01584 878141) or on the door. A highlight of the pre-Christmas season at Hereford Cathedral for the past few years has been visits by Birmingham-based chamber choir Ex Cathedra to perform atmospheric candlelit concerts. This month for the first time they will be bringing a summer programme to the Marches – also performed by candlelight as dusk gathers, in Hereford Cathedral at 8.30pm on 6 June and in St Chad’s Church, Shrewsbury at 8pm on 14 June. The choir promises that the sequence of words and music inspired by four centuries of magical music for midsummer, performed without an interval, will ‘send you home singing of summertime’. (For ticket details see Ex Cathedra’s website www.excathedra.co.uk).

There’s plenty of musical activity in Brecon Cathedral this month, with free lunchtime concerts at 1.10pm on Fridays. On 7 June the Fosse Duo play music for organ and recorder; on 21 June the recital is given by pianist Maria Stratigou; and on 28 June you can hear Gwent Chamber Orchestra. On the evening of Saturday 8 June at 7.30pm there is a concert by the Brecknock Sinfonia, whose members are a mix of professional players, teachers and talented amateur performers, conducted by Michael Bell. They will play Suppé’s ‘Poet and Peasant’ overture, Bruch’s heart-rending ‘Kol Nidrei’; Borodin’s ‘Polovtsian Dances’ from his opera Prince Igor (including music that was later used in the musical Kismet, for the famous song ‘Strangers in Paradise’) and Dvorák’s Symphony No 6 in D major. The next Border Voices concert will take place on Sunday 23 June at 8:00pm in Leominster Priory. This highly skilled choir, which specialises in the earliest of early music and is directed by cellist, viol player and singer David Hatcher, will be performing the music of Manuel Cardoso (1566 - 1650), focusing on his hauntingly beautiful Missa Pro Defunctis and a selection of his motets. Other Portuguese composers will feature in the programme, including Alfonso De Lobo whose motet ‘Versa Est in Luctum’ is one of the finest examples of Portuguese polyphony. Entrance is free, but there is a retiring collection in aid of the Leominster Priory Restoration Fund. As I write, Mid Wales Opera is coming to the end of an imaginative week-long residency in Presteigne, including a community production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in St Andrew’s Church and a sold-out evening of promenade performances taking place in the gas-lit basement kitchens, dining-room, sitting-room, top floor landing and courtroom of the historic Judge’s Lodging. The company now takes a well-deserved summer break, but this month venues in Hereford (13 June), Shrewsbury (16 June) and Mold (26 June) will host performances of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, an opera that was premiered in 1843 but has been radically updated by Daisy Evans for Welsh National Opera. Set in and around Pasquale’s doner kebab van, parked in downtown Cardiff, it’s the story of an old bachelor’s romantic delusions and the young lovers who outwit him, with a cast of larger-than-life characters, including local geezer Malatesta and his travelling band who hang around Pasquale’s after their long nights of boozing. See www.wno.org for more information and online booking. Clair de Lune

grass roots Lies, Damned Lies, and Energy Statistics!
L
AST month I wrote about the Swedish school student, Greta Thunberg, and the campaign she began last summer to demand drastic action to combat global warming. Soon after I sent in my article, something unusual happened. There was a virtual tsunami of media coverage of climate change, on Extinction Rebellion, on the climate emergency declared in the commons, on the call for zero carbon by 2050, and of course on the young Swede herself. The straight-talking Greta was soon accusing Britain of making false claims about its record in tackling climate change. She spoke of the UK’s “current, very creative carbon accounting”. “Since 1990,” said Greta, “the UK has achieved a 37% reduction in its territorial CO2 emissions, according to the Global Carbon Project. And that does sound very impressive. But these numbers do not include emissions from aviation, shipping and those associated with imports and exports. If these numbers are included, the reduction is around 10% since 1990, or an average of 0.4% a year…” Some MPs were at a loss as to how to respond to Greta Thunberg. On Question Time, the BBC panel were asked if they were embarrassed that a 16-yearold schoolgirl had done more to raise awareness of the catastrophic effects of climate change than a whole generation of politicians. Home Office minister Victoria Atkins looked a little queasy, as though about to be swamped by a vast wave and searching for a lifeboat. Her leader, Theresa May, had castigated school climate strikers and then given Greta Thunberg a very wide berth, so what on earth was the ambitious young Tory MP to say? Atkins could not bring herself to utter Greta Thunberg’s name. She floundered briefly, but then spotted flotation. She struck out towards the reassuring figure of Sir David Attenborough, Britain’s hero of the natural world. More than 75 years older than Greta, he was quite irrelevant to the question! But Atkins insisted on telling viewers he had spent a lifetime telling us about the damage we were doing to the planet. Actually, the truth about David Attenborough and climate change is not quite as she assumed. Although Attenborough’s wildlife documentaries have been trusted for decades, he has owned up to failing to get the message about man-made climate change until rather late in the day. He only fully accepted it in 2004 after hearing a lecture by an American scientist, Ralph Cicerone. What is so odd about Attenborough’s Damascene conversion is that it took place some fifteen years after Margaret Thatcher, while still prime minister, had given two major speeches sounding alarm bells about the dangers of global warming.

She did so under the guidance of her favourite diplomat, Sir Crispin Tickell, who had started to
focus on the massive threat posed by greenhouse gas emissions while he was on study leave from the foreign office in the 1970s. But I digress. What people need to know now is this. Was Greta Thunberg right when she accused Britain of relying on dodgy numbers over its claim to world leadership in the fight against global warming? For many years British ministers have been claiming to have made world-beating cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. They have done so under John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Theresa May. But the cuts they cite in UK output of greenhouse gases tell only half of the story. The other aspect, widely ignored, is the emissions that are caused overseas by what we in Britain consume. What about the manufacture of thousands of cars a year in Germany for the British market? And the production in the far east of billions worth of other goods destined for the UK. Then there are the high-altitude jet engine fumes caused by our addiction to holiday flights. And the emissions from shipping. All these are routinely excluded from the figures. When all these outsourced greenhouse gas emissions are totted up, they almost cancel out all the cuts in emissions that have been achieved within Britain’s borders over the last thirty years. So, Greta was right on target! And she out-smarted those who, like Theresa May, have slated schoolchildren for missing classes in order to hold monthly climate demonstrations. Greta was also correct in noting the urgent messages contained in the November 2018 UN Environment Programme “Emissions Gap” report. I did not notice this document going out of its way to applaud Britain. Rather, it said the world was falling further and further behind in the battle to curb climate change. Moreover, it revealed that the whole EU, of which Britain was still a member last time I checked, was well off track in delivering on the pledges it had made to cut emissions in the 2015 Paris climate pact. Onshore Wind – a reply to critics Dear editor, My Grass Roots article about onshore wind farms has caused some turbulence! Firstly, thanks to Brian Drew for his measured response in May’s Broad Sheep. He upbraids me for saying that the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales battles to stop wind farms being erected. Perhaps I should have stated that the CPRW does not fight each and every wind farm, but only those it dislikes the look of. I had wrongly assumed that that would be obvious. I agree with some of Brian’s points, but I part company with him on the total contribution made by onshore wind. He says it “is…problematic as actual energy production is low”. In 2017, despite the Tories’ dislike of land-based wind farms and their refusal to support them, onshore wind generated around 9% of the UK’s power, a fair bit more than we got from offshore turbines that year. Brian also asserts that offshore wind can make a useful contribution to our energy mix. True, but I would urge those whose attention is fixed on unspoilt countryside to think also of poor families across Britain struggling to pay power bills - and the extra hardship they suffer if only offshore wind is subsidised and cheaper onshore wind is excluded from the mix. Another reader, who wishes to be nameless, disputes a figure I gave, of 15%, for wind power’s annual share of UK electricity generation. I should have made it clear that that was the total percentage for BOTH onshore and offshore wind in the year in question. A third reader, in a private email, accuses me of launching an “attack” on the CPRW over its resistance to certain wind farms. I was simply recording what is manifestly obvious from CPRW websites – that its members mount dogged resistance to whatever they judge to be unsightly wind farm development. With best wishes, Julian O’Halloran
