HE age of the personal transport system (car to you mate), is over. The planet can’t take anymore. We are all going to be zipped about the place by sophisticated mass transport systems and driverless electric cabs. The change is just around the corner so get used to the idea buddy. Don’t you just hate people who call you buddy? Anyway, it’s time to go to London for the weekend and although, as you know I loath trains I’m just going to have to bite the bullet as the Japanese say. (Bullet train. It’s a joke. Get it? Oh, never mind). Cadge a lift to Leominster station. Some twat has run into the level crossing with his lorry. The line is closed, no trains from Leominster today. Okay, let’s go to Hereford. Buy a ridiculously priced ticket. My friend Bob was in London once and was so appalled by the price of the ticket he went out and bought a 2CV Citroen for £50, drove it home and dumped it! Small Ads 4 Anyway, as I was saying, I’m standing on the platform at Hereford with about a million Humphrey’s Hints 6 other people, because of the hold up at Leominster. Finally one pulls in. About a million Art 8 people jump on and I’m left standing on the platform. I’m buggered if I’m going to stand in the aisle all the way to Newport. I’ll just wait for the next one. I go and sit in the waiting Art workshops 12 room for half an hour and watch the infra-red heater turn itself on and off. A train shows Cinema 18 up. I’ve got a seat - yippee. It deposits me at Newport but I’ve missed my connection, Dance 22 so I’ve got a 45 minutes wait. Unfortunately Newport station seems to have just survived World War II and is completely barren and shuttered up. They are ‘doing improvements‘ Food 24 a poster tells me. I stand on the empty platform and shiver. Music 26 The London train pulls in. I get a seat. All is well with the world but because of the Music workshops 38 delays I hit Paddington at 6pm on a Friday night. Not a good move. Shuffle through the tunnels till I get to the District & Circle line and jump into a very crowded carriage. We Band directory 40 set off east, but after about 100 yards the driver slams on the anchors and everybody falls Theatre 42 over. Some idiot, not me, has got their bag caught in a door. The driver comes on the Word 46 intercom. “Some idiot has got his bag caught in the door and I’ve just spotted a warning Grass roots 50 light. I’ll try and make it to the next station and sort it out. If anybody has actually got their head hanging out of the train, they’d best pull the Emergency Stop.” We get to the Comp therapies 52 next station, Edgware Road, but the platform is on the other side of the train so the driver We take no responsibility can’t open the doors to free the bag. He for the veracity of the starts moving down the train to try and find information herein the offending bag straps. It’s 6.15pm on a Friday night. The doors are open. Some Pete Mustill people get on the train. Some more people Mayfield, Stapleton, get on the train. Some more people get Nr Presteigne, Powys on the train. This train was already full at LD8 2LW Paddington. This is ridiculous. Tel: 01544 260051 The bloke with the bag is, of course, in my Email: info@broadsheep.com Website: www.broadsheep.com carriage but the driver can’t get to him ‘cos there’s way too many people on the bleeding train. We all get off the train. He fixes the door. We all get on the train. It’s impossible to breathe. At Liverpool Street I change onto the Central Line. The rolling stock on the Central Line is getting a bit old. In 2003 an engine actually fell out of a train at Chancery Lane. It’s now 2017 and the latest innovation seems to be that they have dispensed with wheels and are just dragging the carcass of the train along the tracks like fingernails on a blackboard, only 1000 times the volume. My ears start to bleed but everybody else in the carriage just sits there like it’s perfectly normal! It must be a special train for deaf people. I get out at Bethnal Green and realise I’m not quite sure how to get to Felstead Road. Never mind, I’ll get a cab. One miraculously appears, a proper old black cab. Not one of your Uber Johnnies. “Felstead Road, it’s up near Victoria Park mate.” We drive off. “Do I turn left or right here” asks the cabbie. “I don’t know mate, you’re the bloody cab driver.” I thought you were meant to know every road in London?” We stop and spend about £4.50’s worth, looking at his Sat Nav. Next day is Saturday. Walk down to Hackney Central, get an overground to Highbury & Islington. Very civilised train. Change onto the Victoria line to get a connection to the Piccadilly line, to my sis in Muswell Hill. The Piccadilly line is closed. I get a bus. Later on my sis gives me a ride to Finsbury Park so I can get a connection to South Kensington. On the train I spot a short cut if I change at Green Park. Yes, a short cut onto the Piccadilly line. The Piccadilly line is closed. Retrace my steps through the tunnels and get back on the line I was on. It’s midnight, I need to make it back to Bethnal Green with the minimum amount of Central line screeching as possible. I grab a District line train heading for Barking. It is full of very drunk people from Barking who are all barking! I escape at Monument and walk through 20 miles of tunnels to Bank in order to get on the screeching blackboard. Sunday. I get the overland from Hackney back to Highbury & Islington in order to get the Victoria line to King’s Cross and the Circle to Paddington. The Circle is closed! I get back on the Victoria line to Oxford Circus and thence via the Bakerloo line to Paddington. By now I’ve missed the fast train to Hereford and it’s quicker to go on the slow train. I bloody hate trains - Slough, Reading, Didcot, Oxford. I bloody hate trains - Charlebury, Pershore, Worcester Shrub Hill, Worcester Foregate Street. “Oh what the hell, I’ll have a toasted sandwich from the buffet.” “What the F***” “It’s a sandwich with charcoal lines drawn on it then microwaved!” I give up.

ON THE PROBLEM WITH BEING HUMAN Our biggest handicap is that we consider ourselves to be superior to other animals and to all of Nature. The belief underlies the notion that the world consist of resources for us to exploit and enables governments to indulge their own self-interests to the detriment of the planet. Hey Ho!!

Humphrey’s Hints
Humphrey’s Household Hints T
HEY don’t call me the Shirley Conran of the Mid-Borders listings magazine publishing world for nothing. A high flying, high profile, power-dressing job demanding an immaculate image and still time to keep a house fit for any impromptu soiree. So how can it be done - here are a few tips. FLOORS: Avoid carpets, they’re dust traps so try stone, it’s easy sweep and comes in tones of grey that don’t show dirt, also avoiding the need for ashtrays without involving a fire hazard - safety should always come first. If you feel obliged to have carpets, then don’t fall for the Shake & Vac con. There really is no point in emptying the hoover bag over the carpet just for the satisfaction of sucking it up again. DUSTING: Get rid of all solid fuel fires - just think of all the dust they create. I don’t care about the romance of country living, foraging for fuel for free. Get real and pay the bills, those nice men who run the utilities deserve every penny they get. A Rayburn full of coal, a crappy chimney that smokes a bit, so you riddle it and everything gets covered in a thick layer of grey. Won’t notice on the floor of course, but the china horse, Guiness glass made out of icing and perfectly carved penis on the mantlepiece will lose their polished sheen. Get rid of the coal and you need never dust again. Another neat anti-dusting trick is to encourage spiders. They spin nice sticky webs which the dust sticks to (together with flies, a handy side effect) and you gain loads of green brownie points (if that’s not a contradiction in terms). LAUNDRY: Be nice to your mother.
COOKING: You are what you eat, so it’s important to eat well and sensibly whilst minimising the work involved. My advice is to get a job in a restaurant. This means you get good food for free, you still have to wash-up, by hey, YOU get paid to do it. Maybe this is the start of the wages for housework revolution - don’t do it at home, do it somewhere else. Roll on the revolution. Cooking is also very energy inefficient for the single person. The amount of energy involved is the same as for a few especially the amount of dirty pans cluttering up the kitchen sink until you need them again. If you require variety in your diet, then you might need to suck up to two cafes, one specialising in breakfasts and one for supper. If you really feel you need three meals a day, then you might have to cook one yourself - I recommend toast. BATHROOM CLEANING: Why bother? Every time you use them they get full of water, so that means they’re clean, doesn’t it? VERMIN: I’ve rarely had a problem, since I always keep a cat and even rodents have their standards. I did once find a rat dead in the middle of the kitchen floor with no apparent injury. My assumption was that it had died of food poisoning and I haven’t seen one since so it appears to be the perfect deterrent. Anyone for dinner? November 97 Nicola Humphreys

We are looking for three dynamic new Trustees to support the next stage of our development. The Bleddfa Trust was established forty years ago and is based in rural mid-Wales. Our mission is to enrich the creative spirit and promote well-being through the Arts, storytelling, music, painting, meditation plus a varied programme of exhibitions, workshops, lectures and retreats. The Trustees’ role is to safeguard the Trust’s mission, to secure the development of Bleddfa on a sustainable financial footing and to support the Manager, Sarah Pearson, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Bleddfa Centre – comprising a Café, Shop, Gallery and Activity spaces. The successful candidates would be expected to attend five Board meetings a year plus occasional informal meetings. The role is voluntary; expenses can be paid if requested. An interest in the Arts is important; but the main qualities sought by the Trustees are commitment, organisational skill and experience in one or more of the following areas: publicity, marketing, event management, retail and fundraising. This is an exceptional opportunity to help shape the identity of a very special place.

cinema BRECON FILM SOCIETY TONI ERDMANN (15) Driven career woman Ines (Cate Blanchett-lookalike Sandra Hüller, AMOUR FOU) generally shuns her prankster father, Winfried (Peter Simonischek) whose main companion is his old dog. But when the mutt dies, Winfried spontaneously decides to follow Ines to a business conference in Bucharest, much to her discomfort. Unwilling to be cowed and wearing a long wig, a bad suit and a combative attitude, Winfried adopts the wild-man alter-ego of Toni Erdmann, thus obliging Ines to protect her steely image amongst the male executives she’s trying to impress. Cue numerous increasingly bizarre and hilarious set-pieces which ultimately if paradoxically bring father and daughter closer together. Best known as a producer THE ARABIAN NIGHTS trilogy – this is German writer/director Maren Ade’s third, most accomplished, and deservedly award-garlanded feature.

T R E S P A S S AGAINST US (15) Chad (Michael Fassbender) is the savviest son of Colby Cutler (Brendan Gleeson), the scary patriarch of a traveller family roaming the West Country and looking for trouble. Regretting his illiteracy, Chad is determined the son he has with Kelly (Lyndsey Marshall, HEREAFTER) should get an education – which appals his irascible, flat-earth believing father. Known mainly for his t.v. work and Chemical Brothers videos – who indeed provide the edgy soundtrack – debut director Adam Smith initially engages us with some often hilarious, sometime startling family feuding but kicks the action up several gears when Colby plans a big heist that goes badly wrong, especially for Chad. Gleeson and Fassbender are on vigorous form and Rory Kinnear as their nemesis cop delivers a masterclass in pent-up frustration.

food page The Harp, Old Radnor
A
T a time when the world is showing all the signs of losing its sanity; when the wealthiest, most powerful nation on the planet is run by a man so self-obsessed you wouldn’t trust him to run a rural pub, sub-post-office or chicken farm, it’s important to put a sock in Radio 4, abandon the newspapers and their pictures of Mr Farage grasping a pint with a mad grin on his ruddy visage, and head for safety of an oldfashioned, rustic Welsh boozer, where the talk is of ram prices and country bus services, and, on the night Mr Pernickety and the LC arrived at the enjoyably isolated Harp Inn at the top of a tump by the church of St Stephen in Old Radnor, of vintage motorcars among a gang of old banger buffs gathered around a large table. In this former Anglo-Saxon outpost in Welsh Radnorshire, The Harp appears to have all the attributes that Mr P so keenly enjoys in a traditional English pub. Apart from the odd bogus carriage lamp, the place shows its origins as an ancient Welsh long-house, well-cluttered with big oak beams, huge flagstones, a wide-mouthed fireplace with a stack of blazing oak, and plenty of battered rustic furniture (and those ubiquitous beech chairs made in former Yugoslavia). It is run by a couple who, though not from the region, seem to understand the functions of a pub landlord a lot better than most of the home-grown publicans encountered by Mr P in Mid-Wales.

They have also managed to achieve that tricky balance between being a genuine functioning local while serving outstanding food. Sensibly, they offer only a short menu, accommodating those dull punters who never want to range beyond steak’n’chips, and those, like Mr P and his Lovely Companion, who love to finding fresh tastes and interesting ways of dealing with local ingredients.
The LC started with a serving of Gravadlax cured in vodka and beetroot, interesting enough in its own right, and served with blood orange segments, a dill muffin and crème fraiche – a barrage of strong flavours that absolutely worked. Mr P’s Seared scallop on black pudding with pork crackling and a pea purée had potential but was let down by a blandness in the scallops, and a slight muddiness in the black pudding. He could have recommended that the chef try the especially good black pudding produced by John Brereton, butcher at the Ludlow Food Centre. The LC followed her gravlax with more seafood in the form of Pan-Fried Hake served on Bubble’n’squeak, with Brown Shrimp Beurre Blanc, French Beans, and a sensational sauce, possibly of cream and beetroot. A triumph, her happy face declared. Mr P’s main course was no less so. He had chosen Pot-roasted Pheasant Breast, Buttered Mash, Chorizo, Butterbean and Carrot Broth and Spinach, mainly because he had that day spotted that Ludlow butchers, Andrew Francis, were offering 5 brace of pheasant breast fillets for a tenner, and he and the LC were catering for twelve dinner guests that weekend. New ways of dealing with an over-supply of pheasant are, in his experience, always useful. During the winter in rural Britain, pheasant must be the cheapest source of meat available. Hundreds of large commercial shoots, like the one the Downton Castle estate, sell days of shooting to ultra-wealthy individuals who wish to impress their banker chums by having thick clouds of pheasant driven over their heads to a sixty second shot-gun fusillade. A ‘good’ day might result in a thousand pheasant carcasses to
be divvied up between eight or ten shooters. There are tales of the inevitable vast surplus of dead birds being bull-dozed into pits – a revolting prospect to Mr P who has, in the past, attended game and fowl auctions where a brace of unplucked, undressed pheasant could be bought for as little as 50p. Why on earth no advantage is taken of this very cheap source of protein among the less well-heeled has long been a mystery to him. The pot-roasted pheasant breast offered by the Harp Inn made a wonderful case for this use of the abundant game. The meat was moist and succulent, with strong flavours that were brought out by the accompanying tump of creamy mash, and especially by the strong taste of the chorizo and paprika infused butterbeans in the broth that surrounded it. Mr P’s skill in reproducing this treatment of surplus game is as yet untested. If the thought hasn’t already fled his sieve-like memory, he will try to update his readers in a future piece. As usual, he and the LC shared a single pudding which would have been far too much for their slender frames had they tried one each. Beignets of banana with various sweet sauces worked because the little doughnuts themselves weren’t too sweet, making a delicious finale to an exceptionally well cooked dinner, easily worth a forty-five minute drive through the empty lanes of the Marches in which Mr P and the readers of the Woolly Organ are privileged to live. www.misterpernickety.com
