T’S a disgrace how little good live music there is on TV these days. Yes, yes, I know there are all those so called music channels pumping out videos of rap, R & B, Bollywood and vintage hits. They have names like Chart Show, The Vault, B4UMusic, Heart, Kiss, Viva but that’s not what I’m talking about. Grumpy old git that I am, I want to see live music played by real people so you get to see what they are made of. The Scottish Gaelic Channel BBC Albi seems to be able to put really good concerts of live music on once or twice a day. What have we got on the BBC? Bugger all, except of course dear old Jools Holland. Now he maybe be an annoying little twat, but at least he’s our annoying little twat and he does endlessly support live music. For instance, looking at tonight’s schedule I see it features not one, but two geezers who have appeared in the Dukes Arms in Presteigne. Michael Chapman who (thanks to Salt) has played in the Dukes four or five times and of course Ed Sheeran. Small Ads 4 What do you mean? No, I know Ed never played in the Dukes, but I didn’t say played, I said appeared. He used to be Nizlopi’s roadie and John claims he can Letter’s page 6 remember the mighty ginger one turning up with JCB gang the first couple of times Art 8 they played in Presteigne. I, of course, remember nothing! Art workshops 12 Ed was a massive Nizlopi fan and used to spend a lot of time in his early interCinema 18 views going on about how great Dance 22 they were. Anyway, now Ed rules Food 24 the world but it appears it’s not all plain sailing. Indeed he’s just had Music 26 to shell out 20 mill to some pesky Music workshops 39 firm who claims he’s been nicking Band directory 40 other people’s tunes. Now we all Theatre 42 know Ed’s a really friendly little chap and the last thing he’s liable to do Word 46 Grass roots 50 is grab some jumped up X Factor performer like Matt Cordle’s song Comp therapies 52 and call it his own. (Actually I’ve just listened to them both back to back We take no responsibility to see what all the fuss is about and for the veracity of the I feel in the grip of a strange desire to go and murder everybody who’s ever been information herein on X Factor and then Ed and probably Adele too and then jump off Beachy Head while singing the original version of Hound Dog by Big Mama Thornton. https:// Pete Mustill youtu.be/uVob4Iqzrr4). Mayfield, Stapleton, Anyway Ed paid up unlike Led Zeppelin who, schooled in the ways of their erstwhile Nr Presteigne, Powys (very large) manager Peter Grant, when the band Spirit came looking for a piece of LD8 2LW Stairway to Heaven, politely told them to go and sling their hook if they wanted to Tel: 01544 260051 (metaphorically) keep their kneecaps intact. You see Robert Plant may come across Email: info@broadsheep.com all cuddly when he’s hanging round the Borders, but once he gets to America it’s a Website: www.broadsheep.com different game. I actually think the whole thing is a pile of bollocks. If you start studying 1940s and 1950s blues and rock and roll, everybody is stealing off everybody all the time and that’s what made it such fun. The fact that none of the artists were getting paid meant the chances of any million dollar lawsuits was pretty slim but the whole history of the music DEPENDED on artists listening to what other artists were doing and then copying it with a few minor changes or in Willie Dixon’s case just stealing it. The only reason it’s become an issue is because of the nature of the business just one or two people are making all the money and the rest of the music business is surviving on peanuts. The upshot of all this is that I’ve decided Eds a bit of a soft touch at the moment so I’m planning to find one of Ed’s hit songs and then recreate my own song that I will claim he copied and then insert it into an early Tango Band album that I’ll have pressed up specially. I’ll just pop off to the computer now and choose a song from You Tube. Right I’ve got one “Ooova Oowa Oowa-oo I’m in love with the shape of you” It’s a pretty simple tune - I’ll make the lyrics a bit the same. “Oh Oh Oh Oh yeah, I’m crazy about your hair.” Ill make the tune exactly the same. I’ll insert it into my 1993 album “Last Tango in Powys”. Call up the lawyers, but I won’t be greedy, 2.5 mill should do it. Get some new copies of the album cut in the Czech Republic but with the old date on it. Bingo, it’s payday! I know what you’re thinking. In court they will say “How could Ed possibly have heard this track before”. This is where we came in. Nizlopi at the Dukes Arms 2004. While I was organising the gig I must have been humming the tune - Job done.

Letter’s page Sir; I see from the April edition of your esteemed organ that your correspondent Damian Grubb-Street has used my name to endorse the excellent Leuchtturm1917 series of notebooks. This I am happy to do; the index plus the numbered pages make it an invaluable tool for any serious researcher. Although the paper is better than Moleskine, in that ink from a fountain pen doesn’t leach through onto the next page, this doesn’t matter too much, as most research libraries insist on only pencil being used in situ. I object, however, to the implication that I use the Leuchtturm1917 for bullet journaling. As a man who has had to employ the editor of this organ to organise a piss-up in a brewery on his behalf, bullet journaling is way beyond my severely limited organisational abilities. Also, the article implied that I use a Mont Blanc pen; nothing could be further from the truth. The tools of my trade are an inexpensive but high-functioning Lamy fountain pen and a Sheaffer propelling pencil what I won off ‘The Shropshire Star’ for writing the ‘Letter of the Week’ a few years back. Who says that writing is a thankless task? Yes, the Leuchtturm1917 is expensive on one level (though is quality ever really expensive?); but I get them free, not because of a sponsorship deal, but because of the perennial problem facing the families of writers, viz. ‘What am I to get the old bastard for Christmas/Birthday?’ They could get me a book, I suppose, but I have lots already. And anyway, my tastes are much more sophisticated than that of my family. I now only read novels by obscure writers from Iowa about failing pig farms, or history books called things like ‘Psychedelic Drug Use in Kettering, 1950-2001’. Seeing their disappointed faces as I try not to sneer whilst unwrapping their well-meaning choices is too much for me to bear. So for many years, I have been more than happy to receive a Moleskine notebook on such occasions. Now I have discovered the Leuchtturm 1917 range, however, I have asked my family to get me one of those instead. Although they are costlier than a Moleskine, none of my family are professional writers, and so they are considerably richer than I. I should further add that Mr. Grubb-Street refers to me as the compere of Presteigne’s ‘Velvet Violin’ cabaret. This is no longer true, as I have been sacked by the impresario for fighting with an audience member who voted to leave the European Union. I f e a r t h a t B re x i t w i l l s e e p r i c e s f o r t h e Leuchtturm1917 notebooks rise even further, with dire cost implications for my family at what should otherwise be happy times (i.e. Christmas and my birthday, March 14th) I hope this clears matters up. Yours etc.

cinema THE LOST CITY OF Z (15) Writer/director James Gray (The Immigrant) has made a rather old-fashioned, but thoroughly engaging action adventure based on real-life explorer Col. Perceval Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam, Pacific Rim) who in 1906 spent two years searching for a lost civilization in the Amazon jungle. Having left behind his sparky, intellectual and disapproving wife (Sienna Miller) and accompanied by his old army pal, Henry Costin (Robert Pattinson, Cosmopolis), he faced massive human and natural obstacles only to return twice more in his thus far unsuccessful quest. Lushly shot in Colombia on 35mm film, Gray avoids the sort of Errol Flynn-like derring-do the film’s worthy antecedents might have employed, wisely preferring to examine the more realistic human traits modern audiences can identify with. But ultimately it’s an exciting, pictorially ravishing, against-all-adversity thriller. All reviews by Mark Williams

A QUIET PASSION (12A) Far removed from the froth of Sex & The City, Cynthia Nixon gives a searing, multifaceted turn as American poet Emily Dickinson in the latest of writer/director Terence Davies’ justly acclaimed biopics (The Deep Blue Sea, House Of Mirth). Outwardly prim and although much loved by her sister Vinnie (Jennifer Ehle), brother Austin (Duncan Duff) and lion-maned father (Keith Carradine), Dickinson’s adult life was beset by emotional constraint and inner conflict. Initially played as a rebellious schoolgirl by Emma Bell, her spirits are soon worn down after returning to her strictly Protestant Massachusetts home, and a painfully protracted spinster’s death before which little of her wonderfully expressive poetry had actually been published. TRESPASS AGAINST US (15) Chad (Michael Fassbender) is the savviest son of Colby Cutler (Brendan Gleeson), the intimidating patriarch of an Irish traveller family roaming the West Country looking for trouble. Unable to read or write, Chad is determined that the son he has with Kelly (Lyndsey Marshall, Hereafter) should get an education – which appals his irascible, flat-earth believing father. Known mainly for his t.v. work and Chemical Brothers videos – who indeed provide the edgy soundtrack – debut director Adam Smith initially engages us with some often hilarious, sometime startling family feuding but kicks the action up several gears when Colby plans a big heist that goes badly wrong, especially for Chad. Gleeson and Fassbender are on vigorous form and Rory Kinnear as the cop on their tail delivers a masterclass in pent-up frustration.

food page The Bell, Yarpole

I

T’S with a heavy heart that Mr Pernickety undertakes this month’s column, for he is not unmindful of the distress that a discouraging review of an eating establishment can cause its patron, or in this case, patronnes. When Mr P and his somewhat jaded Lovely Companion arrived at the externally picturesque Bell Inn in the North Herefordshire village of Yarpole, he was anxious not to find too much fault with the place. A year or so ago, he had, without revealing his identity, talked to the two jolly blonde ladies who had just taken it on and he’d been encouraged by their declared aim of running a country pub with a simple traditional menu. He imagined something like the excellent Royal George at Lingen. Although the Bell at Yarpole is in many respects a fine example of a Herefordshire pub, with its traditional timber-framed beaminess, woodburners and cider press, it suffers from the almost insurmountable disadvantage of being owned by one of the nation’s biggest and crassest pubcos – Enterprise Inns. As a result, the Bell has changed landlords half a dozen times in the last dozen years. Even the famed Bosi brothers who operated it a while ago, although they made a great success of it, found the onerous terms that Enterprise applied simply wouldn’t allow it to be commercially viable. The interior of the Bell has suffered grievously under former tenants. A recent incumbent attacked the place with a paint brush and gallons of faux Farrow & Ball, sloshing the stuff all over the masonry and the formerly lovely old oak beams, and someone has draped the windows with plumcoloured net curtains and pink ribbons, more suited to a down-market bordello than a country pub. The inherited furniture for the most part is cheap and charmless (although cheap doesn’t have to be without charm) while the walls are hung with a few ugly placards and dreary slogans. Mr P realises that the terms of an Enterprise tenancy don’t encourage operators to invest much, but it’s sensible to think about trying to present a place in a way commensurate with its age and inherent traditional qualities. To add to the disappointing interior, the music playing the evening Mr P and the LC dined was on a loop that sounded like the sound track from Abigail’s Party, all thumping bass and Barry White. Nevertheless, Mr P hung on to the hope that the food would compensate for all these shortcomings. The first warning sign that it would not was the colossal size of the menu. It was impossible that everything on it could have been served freshly

24

prepared and cooked. They were offering pages of distinctly non-English options, suggesting highly optimistic aspirations to ‘Gastro’-ness, as well as a vast choice of pasta and risotto dishes. The LC wasn’t hugely hungry so she and Mr P shared a bowl of Mussels Marinara to start. As Mr P tasted the first one, he cocked a sanguine eyebrow. Although it might well have been tipped from a polythene bag into the pan, it was good – a good piquant tomato and cream source, and mussels that tasted fresh. He overlooked the staleness of the hunk of bread that came with it. For a main course, he and the LC ordered Medallions of Pork, and a Chicken Leonardo. Mr P asked for the pork to come with new potatoes and a green salad. The new potatoes had been boiled earlier in the day, and reheated; the green salad included unripe tomatoes and coleslaw. The meat, three slices of pork tenderloin, seemed tired and old; it was overcooked, leathery and devoid of flavour. With his traditional good manners, Mr P attempted to eat it all, but the LC was less tenacious with her Chicken Leonardo – presumably an attempt at an Italian recipe which left the chicken chewy and flavourless. (At the comparatively low price of £8-£9, neither dish was a bargain.) The LC had had enough by then, but Mr P, doing his duty, ordered a rhubarb crumble with ice cream, which was bland, ordinary and absolutely not a bargain at £5.95. Mr P was sorry to have found his experience at the Bell so disappointing. He had hoped that the blonde ladies might have stuck with the original concept they’d expressed, of simple home-cooked pub food. In his view, they would do better to offer far fewer dishes which they could really cook in-house – a good casserole, perhaps, and a small choice of grills - steaks and sausages (from a proper butcher). Mr P will look in a year hence to see if they if they are still there, and if they have heeded this advice. www.misterpernickety.com
