HE rust was slowly eating its way through the chassis of my Vito van and it was time for it to go to its happy hunting ground in the sky. i.e. Kingsland Auctions.
What I needed was a new motor, but not just any motor, something that reflected my elevated position as part time leader writer for a well-known Borders what’s-on magazine. I needed a big car. I needed a massive car. I briefly flirted with the idea of a stretch limo in pearlescent mauve, such as you might hire for your hen night. But I was put off by visions of the dog tearing up the velvet button-back seating and my so called friends drinking the cocktail cabinet dry. Eventually after comparing the lengths and seating capacity of the various vehicles in my price range, (cheap), I decided on a Renault Grande Espace. It’s a foot longer than an ordinary Espace and a good three foot longer than most other cars so it fitted the bill perfectly. I located one from a very respectable yobbo and part-time car dealer in Bristol and off we went. The 2005 Renault Grande Espace is an interesting machine. When the director of Renault first planned it, he sent down two directives to the engineering and design department which read:1. Fait moi une auto qui est le most bleeding complicated auto dans la world. 2. Fait moi une auto qui est completement electrique even the bits that ne need pas to be electrique. This was music to the ears of the Renault engineers who were just entering a phase of designing cars that required more chips than KFC and McDonalds combined. The yobbo showed me round the motor in a Bristol back street. “If you wanna unlock it you need to bend this plastic card, a bit like this, then just firmly press on these micro-switches and it should open”. “No key?” “Yes, it has got a key, but it lives inside the plastic card and it only opens the passenger’s doors. Anyway, then you put the plastic card in this slot and then you press this button marked ‘start’ and then Bob’s your uncle as long as you’re in neutral with the clutch pressed down or the foot brake on!” I gave the yobbo a pile of money and he waved me off. Then after he’d gone indoors I went back to his house and knocked on the door. “Where’s the handbrake?” “It hasn’t got a handbrake as such. If you drive off it will automatically let off the brake and when you stop it automatically goes on... electronically”.
I drove off, but after a few miles the digital Dan Dare style space age instrument panel started winking at me in an alarming fashion. I pulled off into a garage near Tintern Abbey. I button-holed a spotty youth who might have been a mechanic. “My digital dashboard has a digital outline of a digital car and one of it’s digital Email: info@broadsheep.com wheels is blinking” I whined at the youth. ‘Tyre pressures mate” said the boy. “How Website: www.broadsheep.com does the digital dashboard know what my bleeding tyre pressures are?” I asked the lad. “Does a little digital man get out of the digital car and scurry round my tyres and check them every time the damn digtital handbrake goes on?” “I dunno” said the lad, “why don’t you check them?” Sure enough, they were all at 35lbs/inch except the blinking one which was 12lb/inch. “Humpphh”. I spent the rest of the ride home trying to make the radio play anything except Radio 2 but failed. Pulled up at home, the digital handbrake firmly on, and tried to lock the car. I walked round and round, stabbing at the plastic card - no deal. I got in the car, pressed the automatic digital locking button and everything locked, but I was still in the car! I left the window open, went outside the car and leant in to press the switch, but then I couldn’t close the window. I went in the car, got out of the driver’s side, went round to the passenger’s door and locked that with the key hidden inside the plastic card. Simple! By then I was on a roll. I had to go on a big trip, so checked there was a spare tyre and jack by opening all the little compartments at the back of the car. Lo and behold there was a six CD auto changer in the back. While trying to work out how that operated I came across a TV type remote in one of the front pockets. That not only changed the CDs, it also changed radio channels, no more Radio 2.

Why can’t we have a Parador? T
HE Spanish government’s chain of Parador hotels celebrates its 90th birthday this year. A brief glimpse at its website (www.paradores-spain.com) should whet your appetite. There are now 97 Paradores, the majority located in impressive architectural landmarks. The Parador at Granada is in a former 15th century convent; Malaga’s hotel is in an old lighthouse overlooking the harbour; Rhonda’s was once the town hall; and the 5-star Parador in the centre of Santiago de Compostella was originally a hospital for pilgrims completing the 490-mile Camino de St Jaime walk. Neighbouring Portugal copied the idea in 1942 and now has a chain of 34 state-run Pousada hotels. Britain’s closest equivalent is probably the Landmark Trust (established in 1965) which boasts 190 converted historic buildings, though all are strictly on a selfcatering basis. Its sole Herefordshire property is the stately Shelwick Court. With our wealth of scenic offerings and historic market towns, a Parador-type hotel in The Marches sounds like an obvious solution to the region’s chronic shortage of hotel rooms. For this summer’s Three Choirs Festival there will be barely 400 hotel bed spaces on offer in Hereford, although a further 300 will be available at Gardner Hall in Venn’s Lane, thanks to the generosity of the RNIB. A survey commissioned by Herefordshire Council in 2012 (The Marches Hotel Study) showed that there were barely 800 hotel bed spaces in the entire county. Premier Inns are planning to build a 65-bed hotel on land between the Old Market shopping precinct and the new Link Road, but judging by the elevations submitted for planning approval, it won’t be the high-end edifice that the late Sir Ben Gill promised he would get built (think military barracks). So why can’t we have a Parador-type tourism hotel, located in a historic building? Less than 10 minutes walk from Hereford Cathedral Close, the former Working Boys Home on Bath Street, would have made the perfect

Parador, but due to be converted into 75 dwellings by Herefordshire Housing. Or how about the ill-fated Robert Owen Academy’s solid Edwardian corner block (built in 1911), at the junction of Blackfriars Street and Widemarsh Street? Despite a lavish £3-million makeover, it only lasted five years and is now destined to become a cyber security training college. From one of the city’s top boys’ colleges to a school for spooks. Watch out Russia. Or Grade II-listed Churchill House. Acquired by Herefordshire Council in 1964 for £42,000, this mockRegency villa once housed one of the country’s most significant historical costumes collections, whose closure the council ingeniously engineered by restricting its opening hours to four weekday afternoons, totalling 12 hours. It was briefly on the market about six years ago, as part of a ‘fire sale’ of council properties to raise funds to pay for the lavish refurbishment of the former Bulmers HQ in Plough Lane. Used for a while as an annexe to Hereford Art College, this lovely mansion is now reduced to being a Hoople Training Centre. Directly opposite, set in a mature four-acre garden in Venns Lane, is another worthy Parador contender: Elmhurst (once a council-operated care home). This handsome Victorian Gothic mansion has been standing empty for six years. Sticking my neck out (awaiting the Church of England’s chopper for heresy), I would nominate Hereford’s Bishop’s Palace as the perfect subject for a conversion into Britain’s first Parador. Apart from the official residences of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, only five of the CofE’s 44 diosecan bishops still live in episcopal palaces - the Bishop of Hereford being one of these privileged few. For a hotel, this spacious listed building – parts of which date back to the 12th century - occupies one of the prime locations in the city: adjacent to two of our most visited attractions (Hereford Cathedral and the Mappa Mundi Museum) and with beautiful landscaped gardens running down to the River Wye. letters Dear editor After picking up a copy of Broad Sheep at Hereford Library yesterday (nice mag by the way), I just wanted to send a quick response to Llywelyn’s column “Unsafe at Last.” I, too, am a southpaw and as a musician I have to deal with all sorts of difficulties when it comes to playing with my little instrument (I play mandolin, just so you know). Yes, I have to sit or stand to someone’s right if I play alongside them, so necks don’t collide. That’s not a problem. Yes, I occasionally get teased for being different. That’s not a problem. Yes, I’ve had to string the instrument upside-down because finding a lefty mandolin in the UK is near impossible. That’s a bit of a problem, but it’s symmetrical so I can live with it. What IS a problem is the bigotry. I went into one regional music store, and I was looking at the single mandolin they had in the shop. The guy at the desk asked if I wanted to try it out, and I said thanks, but I can’t. I’m a lefty. “Oh that’s terrible,” he says. Terrible? “I tell all my students they must play right handed. That’s just the way it is.” On Facebook pages, wannabe southpaw mandolinists ask others if it is ok to play left handed. They are told no, because it’s wrong. “You don’t see any left handed pianos, do you?” Um. . . but “Well there you go then.” My answer is to rise up... raise the flag (no, the other way) and shout to the world that you won’t be downtrodden any longer. Be proud of your lefthandedness. Fight for others who suffer in silence. And when you aim for the stars, use a left-handed bow!! Regards, Andy Green P.S. I address some of this in my silly blog. Historic Sites for FFCP Practice Reply from Sam Llywelyn Have no fear. Identify as right-handed, and join a band, which will find that it is illegal to throw you out. As for the music shop owner, go on Twitter, grass him up, and then ignore him. He will get his.

JOIN A COMMITTEE? Oh give me your pity, I’m on a committee which means that, from morning to night, we attend and amend and contend and defend, without a conclusion in sight. We confer and concur, we deter and demur and reiterate all of our thoughts. We revise the agenda with frequent addenda And consider a load of reports. We compose and propose, we suppose and oppose And the points of procedure are fun. But although various notions are brought up as motions there’s terrible little gets done! We resolve and absolve but never dissolve, since it’s out of the question for us. What a shattering pity to end our committee Where else could we make such a fuss? Bill H

IN THE FRAME - Will Carr T
HERE’S one Herefordian farmer who is not despairing that Spring has been severely delayed, or even, seemingly, cancelled this year. Will Carr concentrates on sculpting in the winter and so has had more time on his latest work which will be exhibited at the first ever Marches Makers Festival at Hergest during the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. His spellbinding kinetic sculptures are inspired by a combination of nature; specifically birds flying and using the natural winds, science; fluid dynamics, geometry, and maths. Will was born in Herefordshire, grew up on the family farm near Weobley and has a background in civil engineering giving him the ingredients for the recipe to become a successful, self-taught sculptor. He has been developing as a practicing artist for six years and says he has a very helpful family who have given him great workshop space and allowed him time away from the farm to concentrate on getting himself established. His earlier work, were static sculptures, one of which, ‘Barley Ears’ can be seen at the Royal Agricultural University. However, nothing stays still, least of all Will or his sculpting. So lately he has been experimenting with literally introducing movement to his sculptures - some of the trial work lines the driveway to his home. Now he has a portfolio of beautiful, mesmerising pieces, which he hopes, enhance and interact with their environment wherever they are placed. They catch the wind and play with it. They catch the light and reflect it. He says he sees play as part of the creative process and considers his greatest achievement making rigid stainless steel appear soft and almost organic but paragliding seventy kilometres unpowered. (Stainless steel is his favourite material because it maintains its shininess which reflects the environment around the sculpture). Will, now aged 30, has been paragliding since his teens and regards it as a never-ending learning experience which he loves. He is justly proud of having learnt to understand how to utilise nature’s currents and up drafts to go cross-country. Obviously, that
10
understanding has enabled him to create beautiful work that literally possesses energy. “I feel paragliding and understanding the science and geometry, as well as good 3D visualisation, allows me to create fluid, constantly varying forms which interact with their environment; wind and location to surrounding trees etc. I create sculptures which I hope inspire and show the hidden geometries of our world”. Will loves the hills and woodlands of his home county and will be taking over the family beef and arable farm but his love of nature has recently taken him on holiday to Peru to see the sights and sounds of another of nature’s ecosystems. More inspirational material for his sculpture I’m sure. Will told me he could not live without cheese and that owls make him laugh - if you can, take the time, and perhaps a cheese sandwich, go see his work for yourselves. The Marches Makers Festival is a brand new venture for this border country group of artists. Will’s elegant creation will be installed at Hergest Croft Gardens, Kington, one of several venues open throughout the long weekend. (marchesmakers.co.uk) (willcarrsculptures.co.uk)

cinema JOURNEYMAN (15) Successful boxer Matty Burton (Paddy Considine) has a loving, understanding wife, Emma (Jodie Whittaker), a baby daughter and the dilemma facing many aging sportsman: when to stop. His lucrative pension pot is a bout with the younger, unremittingly gobby Andre ‘The Future’ Bryte (Anthony Welsh) and although clearly outclassed, Matty wins on points – but suffers a life-changing head injury. Emma’s initially unconditional support evaporates when Matty starts abusing her and it takes his erstwhile training team and an unexpectedly contrite Bryte to nurture his recovery. Like his hard-edged directorial debut, Tyrannosaur, Considine’s second big-screen feature is about the role of self-awareness in redemption, and only peripherally about the noble art itself. With marvelous performances all round, a very fine piece of work it is, too. All reveiws by Mark Williams

WONDERSTRUCK (PG) Following his lush lesbian romance Carol and before that the quirky Dylan biopic I’m Not There, director Todd Haynes again catches audiences unawares with this supposedly ‘young adult’ mystery/drama which simultaneously chronicles two orphaned deaf children. Set in 1920s New York and appropriately shot in grainy monochrome, Rose’s story is contrasted with that of Ben which is filmed in deep, saturated 1970s colour as he searches for the father he never knew. Perhaps needless to say the pair eventually meet in New York where a luminous Julianne Moore, (a Haynes regular after Safe and Far From Heaven) appears in the second of two roles and ties it altogether emotionally. Intricately plotted by writer/ author Brian Selznick (Hugo), but never too clever for itself, Wonderstruck above all else is testimony to the talents of its two young stars, Millicent Simmonds and Oakes Fegley.

FUNNY COW (15) Ultra-versatile Maxine Peake (Hamlet, The Falling, BBCtv’s Silk) in a bubbly-blonde hairdo gives a career best turn as the titular Funny Cow, the stage name of an ambitious and it must be said hugely entertaining comedienne slogging her way around the beery, twinkly-tawdry 1970s Northern club circuit. We first meet her as a child in post-industrial Yorkshire where domestic violence clearly fuels her decision to escape into showbiz, and Peake’s blowsy character and her undoubted talent is given contextual credibility by cameo performances from the likes of John Bishop, Jim ‘Vic Reeves’ Moir and Diane ‘Philomena Cunk’ Morgan. However actor-turned-writer Tony Pitts (BBCtv’s Peaky Blinders, Journeyman) and director Adrian Shergold (He Kills Coppers) ensure that a dark anger infuses and indeed offsets the humour every step of the way.

food page The Hay Tap at Kilverts, Hay-on-Wye
M
ISTER Pernickety visited Hay-on-Wye with an Old Bibliophile Friend from his distant past, now living, through a bizarre concatenation of circumstances, in Sheffield, but always an aficionado of the Welsh Marches and the musty book shops of Hay. Mr P felt this a good opportunity to revisit the Kilverts Hotel (expressed on its fascia board without an apostrophe, demonstrating either ignorance, sloth or a taste for the modern trend by local authorities to ignore that essential item of punctuation in their place names, out of deference, presumably, to the ignorami who don’t know what it’s for.) The OBF was, inevitably, a fan of Kilvert the man – the late Rev Francis, celebrated Victorian diarist and man of the cloth and questionable interests – Mr P therefore suggested a quick pint at the Baskerville Arms in Clyro, where Kilvert once lived and must, from time to time, have supped a pint (or possibly a glass of Madeira) by the big log fire. The Baskerville Arms is a large, ancient and unreconstructed village pub that has pleasingly avoided capitulating completely to modern trends in pub-keeping. The OBF enjoyed it very much, and, perhaps a little like the Rev Kilvert, was especially fascinated by a slender, blond barmaid in a short leather skirt. After an enjoyable drink (Butty Bach for Mr P), they drove on to Hay and the Kilverts Hotel. Mr P had last reviewed the place in his Guide to Eating in Hay published in 2010, when he didn’t think much of it with its gloopy second-rate ‘gastro- pub’ food. It has been through a few owners since then, and a year ago was taken over by a mini-group of (just two) pubs operating under the name of Brecon Inns, who, in an effort, no doubt, to stamp their own personality on it, renamed it the Hay Tap at Kilverts (still no apostrophe.) It has recently changed hands again, Mr P gathers, to one of the management of the former owners, but it is still called by the same name. Inside it looks and feels lighter than it did, furnished with appropriately warm, rustic tables and chairs. There is a wide selection of unfamiliar beers on offer, which Mr P sometimes takes as a danger sign, however, he enjoyed a pint of Snowdonia Ale from the Purple

Moose Brewery (a micro setup from Porth Madog). The OBF wanted a dark beer and drank a Portland Porter, which lit up his rufescent Hibernian features. The laminated menu is short with no pretention to ‘gastro-ness’. What’s more, half the items on it were ‘off’ that day, which encouragingly suggested that the kitchen did not consist merely of a deep-freeze full of Brakes Bros ready meals and a microwave oven. Mr P made two choices – one bad and one good. As a starter he selected Calamari and was presented with a plate containing five small breaded circles, arranged like Olympic Rings, which had the distressing taste and texture of squishy rubber, straight out of a catering pack. Main courses were restricted to a choice of four types of pie – Steak and Ale (which the OBF had), Steak & Kidney, Butternut Squash & Cheddar, and Chicken, Leek & Perl Las (Mr P’s good choice). Mr P and his guest had received a warm and (rare in Welsh pubs) witty welcome from a jovial bear of a barman, who later assured them that the pies were made in-house. Mr Pernickety was prepared to believe him; the pastry was exceptional and filled with good, fresh ingredients, with no padding or monosodium glutamate. They fulfilled all Mr P’s pie criteria and he had no complaints. He is only sorry that he didn’t sample any of the puddings being served. The ambience of the place, a little flat at first, improved as it filled up. At the end of the main bar there was a wood burner on the go, which always helps, but the atmosphere would have benefitted from a little Miles Davis or JS Bach to fill in those odd silences that can occur in English (and Welsh) eating establishments. Mr P had arrived at the Tap at Kilverts expecting to be disappointed, but on the whole he wasn’t, and might well go there again. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots Soil loss - flowing into rivers and blowin’ in the wind I
N the last two or three years some environmental questions have risen rather rapidly up the agenda of news and politics. For quite a time last year air quality was suddenly all the rage. This year it’s been non-stop plastics. But here’s an issue that hasn’t yet made the headlines - soil erosion! It appears that an alarming area of the world’s farming land is heading towards desert status, unless we do something bold and vigorous to reverse the trend. The first person I heard sounding a clear warning about soil erosion was Jeremy Grantham, a wealthy investment expert based in New England. He and his wife Hannelore are noted philanthropists who have funded no fewer than three climate and environment institutes in Britain. Speaking a few years ago at UCL, Jeremy Grantham, a financier who is sometimes dubbed a billionaire capitalist, warned about the massive loss of soil occurring in some of America’s key farming states. He cited studies suggesting that in the previous 50 years about 40 per cent of the world’s arable soil had been swept away by weather events. This analysis has found support in Britain from academics at Sheffield University, which has its own Grantham Centre. Duncan Cameron, professor of plant and soil biology at Sheffield, speaking in 2015, expressed his alarm at the pace of degradation of our soil. “This is catastrophic when you think that it takes about 500 years to form 2.5 centimetres of topsoil under normal agricultural conditions,” said Cameron. It seems that traditional ploughing leaves the soil vulnerable to being blown away by the wind or washed away for ever into streams and rivers. A hundred years of farming on the great plains in the USA, from around the 1820s onwards, helped to create the conditions that turned land across Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Colorado into the “dust bowls” of the 1930s. As drought took hold, the land lacked the vegetation which had once held the soil in place. Gigantic clouds of dust would rise 10,000 feet into the sky and blow across America. Farms and livelihoods were destroyed on a terrible scale. Speaking in the city of London in April this year, Jeremy Grantham pointed to the loss of earth in one county in Iowa in the last 170 years. He said soil depth had plunged from 14 inches in 1850 to under 5 inches now. And he warned that more frequent and intense rain storms brought by climate change could make soil erosion much worse.
58
In Texas, Grantham pointed out, the Houston floods of 2017 had been caused by ten inches of rainfall on each of three consecutive days. And a single giant storm could remove as much soil in one day as a
farm might have lost in one “normal” year before accelerating climate change. Nor is Britain immune. Some research suggests that by 2100 the UK could have four times as many intense downpours each year as we get now. In the past the process of soil loss was more insidious. And it could take decades to discover the damage done by some well-intentioned farming policies. In 1952 the Ministry of Agriculture began to encourage the growing of sugar beet in East Anglia. The area under this crop in England grew to 200,000 hectares by 1990. Then researchers began to show that growing sugar beet was linked to more frequent and more severe erosion. It also emerged that the World War Two “dig for victory” push had caused serious soil loss on the south downs, as grassland was replaced by crops. As a result, some of the highest erosion rates ever known in the UK were recorded in Sussex. Fortunately, all is not yet lost, according to Professor Jules Pretty of Essex University. He told Radio 3 last year that more and more people in agriculture are turning away from tilling methods that lead to large scale soil erosion. “The key thing that many farmers are finding now – the innovation that overturns 10,000 years of agriculture – is to stop ploughing,” he said. “And they’re creating systems that are called zero tillage, or conservation tillage.” These more sustainable methods have been adopted on nearly 40 per cent of arable land in Britain, though that could mean the old destructive methods are still in use on most UK farms. When environment secretary Michael Gove spoke at the launch of the new Sustainable Soils Alliance in October he warned that Britain was only 30 to 40 years away from the “eradication of soil fertility”. However, campaign groups have branded government policies in this area as “piecemeal and inadequate”. And while soil quality is vital, improving it could become academic if much of the soil is flooding away into rivers, or blowing away in the wind. Julian O’Halloran
