Pub to Pub T

HE sun is shining, I’ve pumped up my tyres, it’s time for that Presteigne summer tradition ‘electric biking to the pub’. Nothing beats cycling down the lanes on a sunny evening to some local hostelry, stuffing down pie and chips and a couple of pints of Butty Bach and then weaving back as the sun goes down. However I think we can go one better with Pete’s handy guide to cycle routes that link TWO great pubs. The criteria are simple. Empty roads. Stunning scenery. A killer pub at both ends of a short route. Three of these four examples involve a fair amount of hills so are ideally suited to keen cyclists, mountain bikers and electric bikers but if I do a follow up, it will be more suited to lazy Sunday cyclists with bad brakes, slightly flat tyres and rusty chains. 1. The Roast Ox Inn, Painscastle to The Seven Stars, Aberedw What’s not to like. This is one of those gloriously perfect bike rides. Wild hills, grassy banks by clear, flowing water, not much traffic, perfect pub at either end - hummph, a small problem there. Anyway, we start off at the Roast Ox Inn, Painscastle. Facing the pub, take the small road that runs up to the left of the pub where after a sharp climb you will find yourself on the wild common land that stretches all the way from Newchurch to Aberedw. Follow that road/track all the way over the hill and, past the turn to Rhulen on your right until you get to a T junction which will signpost Aberedw, turn left. Then just follow that road all the way along the ‘Fairy Dell’ that is the Edw valley till you reach the Seven Stars on your left. So now for the problem, The Seven Stars. After two attempts to sell it off as private housing it has been bought by the community and should soon open again as a Community Pub, but is closed as I write this. The alternatives are take a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to stick in the river, buy a pork pie and have yourself a delightful picnic on the flat grassy bank of Edw about a mile before Aberedw. Vital Statistics. 8 miles, 600ft climbing, 1,050ft descending.

2. Moon Inn, Mordiford to the Walwyn Arms, Much Marcle Charming woods, great views, empty roads, this is another no-brainer. Just set off up the hill on the right hand side of the Moon Inn (signposted Woolhope) and you can’t really go wrong, even if you go wrong. Just make sure you don’t head off We take no responsibility on the B4224 which is a bloody death trap for cyclists. Your main problem on this for the veracity of the ride is deciding where you are going to stop and eat. The Moon Inn looks pretty information herein straight forward, Pie and chips £12.95, beer - Timothy Taylors and Wickwar Brewery. Clare Edwards The Walwyn Arms is one of a small chain of nine rather upmarket pubs owned by The Lodge, Westhide, Buccaneer Holdings. That being said, the Walwyn Arms has a relaxed ambience Hereford, HR1 3RQ and the Beef and Wye Valley Ale pie is £13.50. On your way between the two pubs Tel: 01432 850444 you will also pass The Westons Cider Factory with its Scrumpy Restaurant, open Email: info@broadsheep.com lunchtimes and Thursday evenings and the tiny village of Woolhope which appears Website: www.broadsheep.com to have two gastro pubs (eat your heart out Presteigne). The Crown Inn, three times UK cider pub of the year, steak and ale pie £14 plus The Butcher’s Arms who have Wye Valley Beer and Butty Bach, are too posh for pies, but you might fancy a Pheasant, Tarragon and Bacon Burger with Stilton Cheese £13.95! Vital Statistics. 7.2 miles, 700ft up, 700ft down. 3. The Bridge Inn, Michaelchurch Escley to Hay-on-Wye This is another great ride with brilliant views and to finish, a downhill run into Hay-on-Wye. So, go up the road out of the Bridge Inn, turn right at the junction and then after 100yds, left, signposted to Craswell. Then right at a small crossroads and finally right at the T-junction in Craswell signposted Hay-on-Wye. Onto the top of the hill and then feet off the pedals, it’s downhill all the way to Hay. The Bridge Inn’s food is a bit posh. No pies but a Wild Venison Burger at £15.50 and intriguingly they have their own distillery producing Hill Billy Gin. Then when you get to Hay, well you pays your money and you takes your choice. The Blue Boar, The Swan, The Black Lion, Kilverts, The newly refurbished Three Tuns. My fave these days is Tomatitos but they serve tapas so no chance of a pie, but they have a great selection of wines. Vital Statistics. 7 miles, 800ft up, 1350ft down, whoopee!

4. Sun Inn, Leintwardine to the Riverside, Aymestry Right here is a flat one for all you cheapskates that won’t buy electric bikes. On the other hand it is a very pretty bit of the countryside that you usually wouldn’t see while you are flashing past on the A4110. Anyway, you start off at the famous Sun Inn in Leintwardine, which was until fairly recently the home of Flossie Lane, Britain’s oldest and longest serving licensee. Next door, an excellent fish and chip shop. Come out of the Sun and turn left to continue down Rosemary Lane for a mile or so till you come to a T-junction, turn left signposted Ludlow, then left to Leinthall Starkes. Turn right in Leinthall Starkes heading towards Wigmore, but after 100 yards fork left. If you’re feeling super wimpy at this point you could go into Wigmore and stop at The Castle or the very fine, newly renovated Oak. Otherwise, turn left at the next T-junction and then past the Quarry into Leinthall Earls. Fork right at the village green heading for Yatton and as you come into Yatton, turn left by the postbox into a little lane that becomes a bridleway, that should bring you out onto the A4110 just a couple of hundred yards before the Riverside at Aymestry. Vital Statistics. 8 miles, 160ft up, 220ft down. My gastro-pals tell me the food is very good at the Riverside. Cover pic: Tankus The Henge, HowTheLightGetsIn, Hay-on-Wye, 27 May

Twelve Steps To Freedom W ELCOME to the Glyndwr Institute for Personal Rehabilitation. We were set up yesterday to tackle the problems of addiction to fluids and substances, but decided that there were more pressing issues. Later that evening down the Royal Oak Dr Rhys Pwlleli of our Management Team explained with some passion that the most pressing problem was addiction to social media, and we realised he was actually talking about himself, and his attempts to tackle this crippling dependency. Here are his twelve steps: 1. He admitted that he was powerless over social media, and that his life had become unmanageable, and that the epiphany had arrived when he had wrecked his car in a twitterstorm on that bad bend outside Lyonshall. 2. He had come to believe and accept that he needed strengths beyond his awareness and resources to restore him to sanity, had posted the fact on Facebook and got three supportive comments, 2319 likes and quite a lot of emojis. 3. He had made a decision to entrust his will and his life to the care of the collective wisdom and resources of those who had searched before him, and tweeted about this, and been trolled to hell and gone, and thrown his phone into the fire and had burned his hands getting it out, but luckily it still worked. 4. He had made a searching and fearless moral inventory of himself except for what he had posted on Snapchat because that wipes itself out after a bit. 5. He had admitted to himself and to his 3218 followers on Instagram without reservation the exact nature of his wrongs, which were manifold and could not be solved by signing online petitions, though it did make him feel as if he was doing something. 6. He was ready to accept help in letting go of all his defects of character, except of course his phone, but he would have to let go of his phone, or anyway lend it to his little nephew until he felt better about himself.

6

7. With humility and openness he had sought to eliminate his shortcomings, but he was not quite sure how, plus he had got bitten by his sister’s dog as he was climbing into his little nephew’s bedroom to nick his phone back. 8. He had made a list of all persons he had harmed and become willing to make amends to them all, and the best way of doing this was probably to form a Whatsapp group of his victims, except the ones he had flamed when he was drunk, and how was he supposed to find them, dirty little Remoaner numpties, whoops, there he went again? 9. He had made direct amends to those people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others, by promising the entire Whatsapp group that he would throw away his phone and computer and buy a biro. 10. He had continued to take personal inventory and when he was wrong promptly admitted it, though of course that was impossible without a phone because his whole life was on it so after taking a bit more personal inventory he had decided he was not going to throw it away just yet. 11. He had sought through meditation to improve his spiritual awareness and understanding of the rehab way of life and so to discover the power to carry out that way of life, but his phone goes bing with messages such a lot that he never really has time to concentrate on it, whatever it was, oh, yes, meditation, sorry, I’d better take this. 12. Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, he had tried to carry this message to social media addicts and to practice these principles in all his affairs, but the only way he could get messages to anyone was by tweeting them or instagramming them or snapchatting them or messaging them or whatsapping - bugger, the battery’s run out. At this point the police arrived and Dr Pwlleli was sectioned. Samswn ap Pynysysywmgwn

Letters Dear editor I have just read Julian O’Halloran’s grass roots item about onshore wind. In it he states “Of course, other countryside groups, like the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales, are battling to stop wind farms being erected”. As a member of the CPRW Montgomeryshire branch committee I would point out that this is not strictly accurate and a tad misleading. Indeed, CPRW does campaign against developments slated for inappropriate locations, particularly near protected areas and the like. Also, we campaign where planning inspectorate decisions have unjustly been overturned and brought to our attention by others wishing to protect the environment. We fully realise that off-shore wind can make a significant contribution to our energy mix. On-shore is more problematic as actual energy production is low and the siting of turbines in upland locations is detrimental to precarious ecosystems, water retention and carbon storage capacity. They also frequently require many kilometres of industrialising transmission infrastructure in otherwise unspoiled landscapes. There are sites in old industrial areas or along motorways away from residential properties and close to the Grid where wind turbines could be appropriately sited with minimal impact. Let’s take the sensible approach to meeting carbon reduction commitments while looking after the precious landscape of our country. It can be done. Brian Drew, Montgomeryshire branch, Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales

Dear Pete An avid fan of Broadsheep, I thankfully acquired these two issues at The Cellar Door restaurant in Widemarsh Street, Hereford yesterday. (Not bad, but not one for Mr P and his LC, I don’t think!) So, anyway, I’ve only now got to read your editorials. As for “the fabulous bit of new road”, I walked a groove in it through March with all my visits to Borderlines at The Courtyard (blissfully engaged with seeing a total of 27 films!) Re: Supermarkets Aldi and Lidl “have teeny-weeny one foot square bits of space to load your groceries”, I’m reliably informed at Lidl, because the German way is to load everything back into your trolley and pack it elsewhere. Lidl is also my personal fave - and happily my nearest shop - and I too really rate the wine buyer’s choices. Having lived in France where you could buy it by the 10-litres at the co-ops for about 1 euro a litre, I’m suffering acutely, since returning from the wine prices here. The obvious excuse at Sainsbury’s is to say you’re going to Argos to look through the catalogue for cordless hoovers; otherwise, I wouldn’t be seen dead in there - or in snobby Waitrose. Looking forward to seeing you at one of the gigs - I’m certainly up for yet another CD. [See page 35!] Best wishes. Jan, Little Rumba groupie

Oh dear. Once more Mr. Pernickety blots his copy book with the use of the nearly right but wrong word (see blond instead of blonde previously). In the useful and informative restaurant review of The Coach House he described his current favourite as being a feather blade. Unfortunately I do not think he would like such a piece of meat “sliding unsteadily” ref. Oxford Dictionary for slither but perhaps a “sliver” ref. Oxford Dictionary for a slice. Never the less a helpful and actionable review. (Call me old fashioned but I use the 1940 Third edition which does not refer to a slither being a sliver. Perhaps persistent misuse has caused it to be so the current online OED calling it British informal.) I shall remain being vigilant. Mr. E(even). M.(More). Pernickety Mr Watt’s pedantry is always welcome, provided he is right. In this case the word ‘slither’ has a well-documented meaning as a ‘slice’ or ‘sliver’ of meat (See OED 1998). And if Mr P may indulge in a little pedantry himself he would like to point out that in his follow up communication, Mr Watt declares: ‘I shall remain being vigilant’, unaware presumably, that ‘being vigilant’ is a tautology, since ‘vigilant’, as present participle of the Latin ‘Vigilare’ (to be wakeful), means ‘being wakeful’. Did Mr Watt really mean to say: ‘I shall remain being being wakeful’? Were Mr P of a vulgar disposition, he might have uttered a phrase involving the words Boo, Sucks and Yah. Mr Pernickety

cinema Cinema Goes Live

A

S anyone who’s visited one in the last few years will know, a major trend in cinema-going has little to do with films, namely the live broadcasting of theatre, ballet, opera and other cultural events from faraway places that we punters couldn’t easily attend or afford. As someone who until fairly recently worked in the industry, I also know that this has proven something of a commercial lifeline for cinemas whose audiences have been leeched away by a combination of Netflix, social media and economic austerity. So I’m sure many of us scour the Broad Sheep listings each month to see how we can indulge our cultural appetites for something other than CAPTAINS MARVEL and UNDERPANTS. In May, for example, you can see FAUST performed live from London’s Royal Opera House, Arthur Miller’s ALL MY SONS from the National Theatre, Mathew Bourne’s rendering of SWAN LAKE, and AS YOU LIKE IT from the Stratford on Avon. All My Sons, National Theatre

However for those who’ve not yet been tempted, I feel I should sound a few notes of caution. Firstly, prices are almost always considerably higher than your usual cinema ticket, although of course a lot less than those charged at the original venues. Secondly, increasingly these ‘live’ streamed events are not actually live at all, but filmed days or even weeks in advance of their appearance in cinemas and then often edited according to the director’s predilections, both of which invariably mean it’s not the same as seeing them ‘live’ at all. And I was recently lucky enough to see the flat-out fantastic production of ANTHONY AND CLEOPATRA at the NT starring Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo which was streamed not-quite-live to cinemas late last year and found somewhat wanting by some friends who saw it thus. I subsequently read an interview with Fiennes who pointed out that the presence of many cameras and changes to lighting and staging put the cast off their stride, which when you think about it, is perfectly understandable.

20

However all that said, do please try out some of these events for yourself if only because they genuinely offer an opportunity to engage with performances in a manner that you simply can’t with a film that has been shot and pieced together over many weeks and months.

The Sisters Brothers

But if films are primarily your thing, then May sees some corkers due locally, starting with the cutely titled THE SISTERS BROTHERS, yet another confirmation that following the recent-ish HELL OR HIGHWATER, THE REVENANT and DJANGO UNCHAINED, the western genre refuses to die in the face of CGI-driven blockblustering and happy-clappy musicals. So we find the often underrated John C. Reilly and ever watchable Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous siblings and hired guns out to capture a meek chemist (Riz Ahmed), discover his trick of divining gold from riverbeds… and then kill him. French writer/ director Jaques Audiard established his ability to deepen the characters of his protagonists with RUST AND BONE and A PROPHET and goes even further here in sketching the flaws and flawed relationship between the brothers, but with a considerably more humorous tone than in those earlier works. And Reilly, in particular, rises to the occasion of being a main character instead of his usual co-star roles (THE LOBSTER, CARNAGE). Actually, that’s not quite true because he also starred, and rather magnificently so, as Oliver Hardy in that very different buddy movie, STAN & OLLIE, which was completed after THE SISTERS although released here later and that, too, is being shown around the Marches this month. And two other must-sees, if only for terrific turns from Brit legends Julie Walters and Judi Dench are are RED JOAN and WILD ROSE.

Wild Thyme, Presteigne

A

FTER a full English day spent in a sharp easterly wind swooping down the slopes of the Titterstone Clee, munching al fresco Andrew Francis Old English bangers in Price’s rolls while helping to make the local bookmaking community a little richer, to the accompaniment of the thundering hooves of overgroomed bloodstock with tasteless patterns brushed on to their sleek rear quarters, Mr P and his Lovely Companion were more than ready for a peaceful, civilised dinner. They drove through the quiet spring evening to Wales, to the bustling former county town of Radnorshire, Presteigne. The High Street was thronged with two youths as Mr P and the LC approached the premises which on their last visit nearly four years ago had been called the Duck’s Nest. Although not without a few cavils, they had liked the place, and, noting that it was full of young men with big beards, thought it a useful addition to the cosmopolitan cultural centre that Presteigne aspired to be. Subsequent tales of rifts, broken-hearted chefs, and general disintegration reached Mr P and before he had the chance to return and see what had happened to it as an eating establishment, it was gone. The place reopened a month or so ago as an entirely new venture called Wild Thyme – a term which Mr P fervently hopes is not intended as some kind of lumpen pun, as favoured by headline writers of the Daily Express. From the outside, Wild Thyme with its big front windows looks inviting, a promise which is carried through to the interior at which the LC, something a visual stickler, nodded her approval; she enjoyed the combination of industrial workshop with cosy rustic and Italian knick-knackery hanging on the walls, which

chimed with the restaurant’s subtitle, ‘Cicchetti Bar’. The danger of this designation is that it inevitably draws comparisons with Ludlow’s Cicchetti Bar, which, despite the fact that the chef/proprietor keeps missing his appointments at the Shropshire School of Charm, continues to produce the most delicious Italian cucina within a few hundred miles. The first course Mr P ate at Wild Thyme did fall short of that benchmark. A linguine with crab, lemon, garlic and chilli was disappointing. The crab was bland, with little evidence of chilli or lemon. With great confidence the restaurant doesn’t put salt or pepper on the tables, but this dish was distinctly under-seasoned. The LC, on the other hand loved her Salad of Buffalo Mozzarella, tomatoes and basil; so did Mr P when offered a mouthful. There were, sensibly, only four options for main courses: one fish, one meat and two vegetarian. The LC chose a Pan Seared Sea Bass fillet with tomato and butter bean puttanesca. This, Mr P agreed tasted delicious, fresh and authentic. Mr P’s Aberdeen Angus sirloin served with a light sauce, confit cherry toms and roasted Charlotte spuds was outstanding and at £17 good value, although the potatoes were undercooked and quite hard. He and the LC disagreed about the dressing on the mixed green salad that they ordered; Mr P found it too salty by a long way; the LC declared that she liked dressings that were sharp, rather than sweet. Afterwards, they shared a slice of happy-making rhubarb tart. They had drunk only San Pellegrino (although there are some interesting, even adventurous wines on the list), as a result their bill came to about £60, which felt fair. The LC was well-contented with her dinner while Mr P retained reservations over a couple of elements but appreciated the absence of two common irritants: there was not a .95p to be seen on the menu, and no serving staff ordered him to enjoy his food. He looks forward to another visit in a few months’ time. www.misterpernickety.com

Festival Time! Linton Festival

Music, real ale & cider festival. Linton Festival organisers have proudly announced that they have smashed through the £100,000 barrier in fund raising and donations to local charities. “Last year our six nominated local charities benefited from a whopping £8,800 in sponsorship and donations raised by the festival.” Said festival chairman David Lambert. “Now in its 19th year, Herefordshire’s best loved 3-day music event returns on the weekend of Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th July. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy fantastic international bands and artists, not to mention over 40 real ales, ciders and great food, while raising money for local charities!” Linton Festival is a not for profit community event, run by volunteers and is held in the grounds of The Alma Inn, Linton near Ross-on-Wye, HR9 7RY, which won CAMRA’s Herefordshire pub of the year in 2018. Full camping facilities are located right behind the site, within walking distance to the main stage. Headline acts this year include on Friday Limehouse Lizzie, UK’s top Thin Lizzy tribute band. Also playing on Friday is Hamilton Loomis and Lisa Mills. On Saturday The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - toe tapping Hillbilly/Pink Floyd, folk pop and rootsy psychedelica band from New York. Also playing is Nine Below Zero, Juke Joints, Viva Santana, Catfish and Rosco Levee. Headlining on Sunday are The Manfreds, legendary UK band from the 1960s. Also playing on Sunday is Aynsley Lister, The Amy Winehouse Experience, Xander & The Peace Pirates and the Troy Redfern Band. “Tickets can be purchased for just one day, for all three days and with camping if you’d like to stop over and make a weekend of it” said David Lambert. “Please help us to continue helping to support local charities just by coming along and having a great summer weekend at Linton!” WIN TICKETS to Linton Festival – Broadsheep has a pair of weekend tickets (worth £180) to give away. To be in with a chance of winning, answer the following question: Q: Which band will be headlining on Sunday 7 July 2019? Email entries to: info@broadsheep.com BEFORE 1st June. Include the answer, your name, postal address and telephone number. For further details and to buy tickets see the Linton Festival website at www.lintonfestival.org

grass roots Climate Strikers - The Kids are Alright!

I

T is less than a year since the haunting face of the Swedish school student, Greta Thunberg, first appeared in our newspapers. Greta started to skip classes and to stand or sit with a small home-made placard outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm.

Greta Thunberg outside the Swedish Parliament, August 2018

Her sign said, “school strike for the climate”. She was warning the world that the response of most countries to the threat posed by climate change has been utterly inadequate. At the outset she was totally alone. Greta looked very young indeed. She appeared several years less than her actual fifteen years. Her stare seemed to burn right through the glances of puzzled passers-by, and the complacency of government and business.

about why climate change matters and learning how political processes work.”

At first, success seemed unlikely. But then Greta’s obvious courage started to win support among other pupils, both in Sweden and in nearby countries. Her solitary protest sparked a response which has since spread through Europe and beyond.

But, arguably, the pupils are already one jump ahead of such critical teachers. They sense that it is the very act of missing classes that is gaining them attention. They reckon that, if they demonstrated outside school hours, they would attract less news coverage.

Greta, who is reported to have Asperger’s syndrome, told one reporter that she tended to “over-think” things. Dogged persistence in spreading her message became her greatest strength. But for some of her supporters there was a backlash. A trans-gender school climate striker in Belgium was soon being targeted over her sexuality. A supporter complained that “People are putting all her private life on the table, and she received death threats.”

Theresa May’s reaction to the first London demo was dismissive. She suggested the pupils were wasting lesson time and making the workload of teachers heavier. Mrs May certainly knows a thing or two about waste!

Even so, within a few months, school students in Britain were following in Greta Thunberg’s footsteps. On two Fridays - in February and March - thousands of teenagers missed lessons to protest in London and other UK cities that they felt betrayed over climate change and that tough action by government was long overdue. One sixth former, Noga Levy-Rapoport, aged 17, told the BBC that at a big London demo, she had found herself suddenly at the head of an impromptu march. Wondering where it would end, she perhaps feared arrest. “I called my mum and I went, ‘Mum, I’ve sort of got everyone marching! I just thought I’d let you know in case anything happens.’ In that moment, I think we were all very elated and feeling as if the bravery had sort of paid off.” One of the young marchers said, “The criticism we face is daily - from adults, from parents, from nearly every authority in our life. ‘You are just teenagers! You are just young people. You don’t understand enough.’”

A teachers’ representative, Geoff Barton, of the Association of School and College Leaders, dismissed the pupils’ actions and bemoaned the loss of teaching time. He said, “They should be learning in school

Two years ago, if memory serves me, she and the Tories were sitting on a Commons majority which, while not vast, was quite adequate to achieve some of her main goals. She then, in a reckless political gamble, squandered that majority by calling a totally needless general election, at significant public expense. The drubbing she got at the polls helped to cause the parliamentary chaos that Britain is now undergoing. So, I doubt whether our schoolkids have any very useful lessons to learn, about either education or political protest, from the bossy and accident-prone schoolmarm in Downing Street. Two years ago, I went to give a talk about climate change at a large secondary school. I boned up for tough questions on extreme weather and on climate change denialism. But the big issue I forgot to prepare for was very simple, namely, “What can we schoolkids do?” Ad-libbing desperately, I spoke of writing to MPs, turning down the heating, and trying not to travel by air. What I should have added was, “Make a cardboard placard, write your climate slogan on it, and go and stand with it, somewhere prominent, for several hours a month!” That sort of individual protest just seemed so hopeless! But, suddenly last summer, Greta Thunberg showed us all exactly how it’s done! What a staggering achievement for such a young, and once unremarkable, schoolgirl! Julian O’Halloran
