OU’RE going to sit there and look at my holiday snaps whether you like it or not.” “I had to listen to you pratting on for hours about the bloody Amazon jungle!” “France.”
“Yes I know it’s not the Amazon but you’ll sit there anyway.” “Boat.” “Yes, in the car with the bikes.” “No, in the car.” Yes it was a bit of a squash but we managed to force them in.” “Portsmouth.” “No we didn’t take the A346 through Marlborough. We went round the Newbury by-pass in memory of the protest.” “I don’t know Stumpy or Slumpy or something like that.” “No, I suppose it’s not much of a tribute if we can’t remember his name.” “Brittany Ferries, but just shut up and listen.” “Caen.” “No we took the wrong exit, started heading off towards Mont St Michel then there was no exit and finally we were on some tiny little back road, but at least we were heading south and it looked like France.” Whoops, wrong side of the road! Better concentrate a bit harder. Big market in Flers. Black pudding, goat’s cheese, fabulous fish. That’s a bit more like it. We stay a few nights in the Loire Valley with Macadam Piano. Crazy food, delicious wine, a long low house with a piano in every room. If Macadam is not cooking he is playing, moving from room to room picking up the same tune. Every day we cycle through the woods to Le Loir hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive coypu that everybody says is so common but I’ve still never seen one! (Yes, yes, I know I said Le Loir instead of La Loire, but confusingly the two rivers run side by side till Le Loir joins La Sarthe, so there.) On our last night they take me to Angers for a concert of local band made good, Zenzile. They play mostly instrumental tracks of very heavy, unrelenting dub. I escape to the bar. Later we sit in the back of someone’s van, smoking and drinking beer. It’s like being 14 years old again. I wonder if I should pretend I liked the music but decide honesty is the best policy. Next day we continue south. Driving, driving, driving. The roads are extraordinary. Three and four lane highways, a smooth tarmac, through beautiful countryside and not a person on them. Less traffic than on the back road to New Radnor. We stop to eat a picnic lunch on a secluded side road in a wooded valley. Inexplicably there is a fully fenced tennis court, complete with nets and umpire’s chair in a field at the bottom of the wood. We sit down beside it to eat our lunch wondering who put it there and who plays on it. When we drive up out of the valley Al goes suddenly very white. “I’ve lost my mobile phone!” It’s got all the phone numbers and addresses of all the places we are meant to be staying. We are up shit creek. We try and remember where we last stopped that day - petrol stations, 50km back a small supermarket. We drive back down the valley. The tennis court is still there - empty. The phone is still there in the long grass by the court. That night in a little village outside the crazy hillside town of Terrason, we stay in a rather nice Air B & B with a massive collection of old 60s, 70s and 80s CD’s. We end up listening to Sade and The Grateful Dead. Next night Toulouse and a quick fix of city life. We find a pokey little wine bar with a huge collection of wine all around the walls and a very stoned proprieter playing blues records. We feel very at home and the owner is keen that when we go off to eat, we go somewhere he approves of the wine selection. We end up in a live music joint with nice food and very good wine. So it should
be - 35 bucks a bottle! Finally we meet up with our friends in Minervois country and find the lovely house we will be staying in. The clouds disappear and for the next five days it’s clear blues skies. Every day we cycle off with our packed lunch into the countryside - four go mad in the Languedoc. Every evening we sit in our favourite bar by the Canal du Midi and reflect on another day spent doing nothing in particular! One day, feeling adventurous, we decide to transfer on to the Canal de la Robine and cycle to Narbonne. This involves a weird detour through some bushes and over a disused railway. We have a lot of fun pretending to be in a Buster Keaton movie on the bridge. On the way back from Narbonne we pass a couple on even posher electric bikes than ours. When we get to the bridge Marion spots a mobile phone someone’s dropped. She picks it up and at the next canal lock we stop to discuss what to do. I say “I bet it’s that guy on the KTM.” The phone rings, 10 minutes later the guy on the KTM emerges from the bushes very red faced and grateful. BRAVO - another holiday saved. ON BEING PROTECTIVE Is it just about conserving what wildlife we have for future generations? Or is it more about the growing evidence combined with the instinctive understanding, such as Leonardo da Vinci had 500 years ago, that we are destroying what is/has been a self-regulating ecosystem with everything - great and small - playing it’s part in this huge, wonderful balancing act. No one thing can be eliminated without detrimental effect on the whole.

Architectural Vandalism R EPUBLICAN readers of Broad Sheep won’t need to be reminded where the ‘carbuncle’ epithet originated. Back in the 1980s, Prince Charles successfully defenestrated the designs for an extension of the National Galley, by describing it as ‘like a carbuncle on the face of a much-loved friend’. The scheme was abandoned, but the slur cost Buckingham Palace a grovelling OBE for the partner of the slighted designers. Mi’lord Rogers is another starchitect who has suffered a tongue-lashing from Brian. In a new memoir (A Place for All People), he reveals that it was the Prince’s intervention – via a personal letter to the Prime Minister of Quatar - which put the kibosh on Team Rogers’ scheme to redevelop Chelsea Barracks. One of my architectural critic heroes is the unashamed modernist Jonathan Meades, a man who puts his modernist money where his mouth, since he lives in an apartment in Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in Marseilles. Not only does he tell it like it is (usually defiantly facing the TV cameras wearing sun glasses), but his own journalist hero is the late Ian Nairn, author of the seminal Nairn’s London, quite the best architectural guide to the capital which has ever been published (Penguin reprinted it in 2014). The pair would have had a journalistic field day with this year’s Carbuncle Cup, promoted by the Building Design architectural website. Like The Literary Review’s ‘Bad Sex in Fiction’ award, BD’s annual carbuncles (now in its11th year) attempt to draw attention to the perpetrators of architectural vandalism, both large and small. Most notorious recent winner was Rafael Vinoly’s preposterous Walkie Talkie tower in the City of London. To bowdlerise Nairn (he was writing about the Shell Centre’s 26-storey South Bank tower, which he hated with a vengeance): the best view of London is from the viewing platform of the Walkie Talkie Tower, since this is the only place in London where you don’t have to look at the monstrosity.

Preston Station’s ‘lop-sided cake tin’
This year’s short-listed carbuncular horrors were: the multi-coloured Nova office block overlooking Victoria Station (eventual winner); poppers were obviously being served with morning coffee the day the tower’s façade was detailed; the lacklustre Waterloo Plaza Hotel, for merly gover nment offices - hence it is clad and tiled entirely in grey; some Lego-like student accommodation in Portsmouth; an incongruous single-storey house extension in Malvern; and the wholesale cover-up of the surviving brick skeleton of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s Battersea Power Station. The judges described the Nova tower as “a new benchmark in dystopian dysfunction.” But head and shoulders above these architectural nasties is Preston Railway Station’s new entrance. Ever since the desecration of the Euston Arch in 1961, British Railways and Network Rail have managed to get it wrong - Bristol Parkway surely being the nadir. But this pathetic, mean-spirited little single-storey station building – one outraged local resident described it as ‘like a lop-sided cake tin’ - is in a league of its own. The design brief drawn up by Virgin Trains called for “a contrasting structure which would create a more modern and passenger-friendly environment.” Preston once had an exemplary record for modern architecture, with its totemic bus station, completed in 1969, being the prime example. The graceful structure – which would be equally at home in Brasilia - was the work of one of Britain’s most influential modernist practices: Building Design Partnership, founded in the town 45 years ago and still going strong today, with a staff of almost 1000. Though the town’s blinkered local authority twice tried to have the bus station demolished, it is now protected by a Grade II listing. Last year, following an energetic local preservation campaign (backed by the Twentieth Century Society), Lancashire County Council stepped in to approve a competition-winning £13-million refurbishment programme, which will see the reinforced concrete structure converted into a youth sports centre, complete with a rooftop football pitch. Meades and Nairn would surely approve. Nick Jones

Wish You Were Here? P
OSTCARDS FROM LIFE is a collection actually far removed from the bawdy images on seaside postcards of yesteryear. Rather, it is an often charming, usually colourful, mixture of pieces, each one the size of a postcard. And each postcard has been created for and donated to St Michael’s Hospice.
Still life, portraiture, landscape, abstract and more produce a feast of visual art. The eclectic theme continues with the methods each artist has used. These include painting, printing, photography, embroidery, calligraphy and even ceramic. Over 300 pictures from 150 artists, given a uniform elegance by their identical oak frames, provided by David Beswick. The exhibition runs for just three days in The Great Hall of The Bishop’s Palace by the Cathedral in Hereford. On November 10th, 11th and 12th, from 10am until 4pm with free entry. However the catalogue is already available to view online and bidding for each piece has begun http://www.st-michaels-hospice.org.uk/postcards-from-life Each time I’ve looked at the images I’ve enjoyed different pieces and, of course, noticed more detail. The disadvantages of viewing online are obvious - the lack of intimacy with a piece must affect your reaction to it, involvement with it. However, the advantages are that it is accessible to everyone, whenever and wherever they are and it can be revisited. Such a diversity of talent almost demands a second look. There is definitely an ‘aaaah’ factor to many of the animal portraits; a restful feel to sunsets, a beach scene, a wooden boat tied to a jetty and there is humour - a black wolf wearing Red Riding Hood’s cloak, for example. There is a painting of tubes of paint, another of sardines and a lemon ready for cooking, a brightly coloured kingfisher that appears to be made of beads and bees flying over a music score that may be ‘The Flight of the Bumblebee”? Find your own favourite - mine’s a secret. Now in its third, and possibly final year the event is the brainchild of Paddy Nugent, Community Fundraising Manager for St Michael’s Hospice. Although it has not always gone strictly to plan - he jokes that he originally imagined inviting internationally renowned artists - it has been a huge success. Raising over £22,000 in its time it has become
David Simms
a truly community based art show.
The portfolio includes professional and leisure artists. Many are local but not all. Ten pieces in the exhibition are from Herefordshire College of Arts’ extended diploma programme students. There’s also work from current patients of the hospice. With a building reputation and, of course, a limit to the number of postcards that can actually be shown there have to be some hard choices made but Paddy says they have made a conscious decision not to be over selective. This “come one come all” approach is what gives the collection its charm and turns it from a mere exhibition into something of a family art show which is open and friendly. The artists all give an original work. Every pound raised goes to the hospice and from October 30th the online bidding goes live. It is important to remember that buyers are encouraged to bid their maximum from the outset. This means that the highest bid, will, of course, secure the purchase. At the exhibition the bids will be shown on a screen. At noon on Monday, November 13th the auction will close - with the lots sold in numerical order Simon Dorrell at one-minute intervals. Last year the little 6 x 4 works of original art fetched from £8 to £750 (the minimum is £5 to cover costs). Obviously, Paddy and his team are hoping to exceed the £12,000 raised last year. St Michaels has been helping people with a terminal illness live life to the full for over thirty years. Proceeds from Postcards for Life will help them to extend their outreach work. This supports people who have family members in the hospice and expands the hospice care into the home. The event is sponsored by Brightwells, Craven Design and Print and Champagne Pol Roger.

cinema THE DEATH OF STALIN (15) Justly famed The Thick Of It and In The Loop, A m a n d o I a n n u c c i ’s h u g e talents as a contemporary satirist now focus on the demise of Soviet Russia’s last great tyrant. Starring many of Britain’s finest and funniest character actors including Paul Whitehouse, Simon Russell-Beale, Michael Palin and Paddy Considine, opening scenes depict a potty-mouthed Joseph Stalin well aware of his hold over both a vast, impoverished empire and a crew of fawning courtiers. But following a stroke and fatal heart attack, the machinations of these senior party officials kick into overdrive as they bicker and back-stab over the political ramifications and in particular the route of succession. Brimful of acerbic, politically incorrect discourse with subtexts obviously, if shockingly relevant to current times, Iannucci’s skill in weaving hilarious secondary, almost incidental dialogue just behind the main narrative to fashion a seamless torrent of laugh-out-loud humour has never been more brilliantly rendered. MARSHALL (15) “The only way to get through a bigot’s door is to break it down,” aptly sums up the narrative arc of this episode in the early career of America’s first black Supreme Court justice. Hitherto solely a civil rights lawyer, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman, The Avengers’ Black Panther) agrees to defend Joseph Spell (Sterling Brown), accused of raping his wealthy employer, Eleanor Sturbing (Kate Hudson) in conservative 1940s Connecticut. Battling against racial prejudice and a loaded legal system is initially not helped by Marshall’s choice of back-up, a local Jewish insurance attorney Josh Gad (Jobs’ Steve Wozniak) and some major evidential twists, but the acting is convincingly charged and director Reginald Hudlin, best known for comedies like Boomerang and House Party, drives it all along at a febrile clip. 12 Nov LE GOUT DES AUTRES (15) The Coach House Theatre, Malvern 01684 892277 12 Nov ETRE ET AVOIR (U) The Coach House Theatre, Malvern 01684 892277 13 Nov THEIR FINEST (12) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 13 Nov HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Welshpool Assembly Room 01938 552043 14 Nov LION (PG) Ashford Carbonel VH 01584 831574 14 Nov HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Garway VH 01600 750465 14 Nov TOMMY’S HONOUR (PG) The Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch 01948 660660 14 Nov THE CARER (15) Much Birch Community Hall 01981 540097 14 Nov THE INNOCENTS (2016) (15) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross on Wye 07956 456290 14 Nov GOODBYE, MR CHIPS (1939) (U) Neston Civic Hall 0151 336 7805 14 Nov THE MIDWIFE (12A) All Stretton VH 01694 723378 15 Nov THE CARER (15) The Red House, Albrighton 01902 373854 15 Nov HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Escleyside Hall 01981 510352 15 Nov A UNITED KINGDOM (12A) Myddle VH 01939 290872 16 Nov LA LA LAND (12A) Pudleston VH 01568 760606 16 Nov BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (2017) (PG) Claverley VH 01746 710528 16 Nov GOLDEN YEARS - GRAND THEFT OAP (12A) Kinnerley Parish Hall 01691 682282 16 Nov LION (PG) Gorsley VH 01989 720358

LOVING VINCENT (12A) Seven years in the making, this fictionalised account of Vincent Van Gogh’s death and its roots is a marvel to behold, each scene handpainted by some 120 artists using the master’s own works as references, which then overlay the live action. Armand (Douglas Booth) the son of the local postmaster (Chris O’Dowd), both of whom modelled for Van Gogh (Robert Gulaczyk), decides that although suicide was undeniably the actual cause of his death, what prompted it may conceal dark secrets about his life and convinces him to investigate. Along the way we meet his paint supplier (John Sessions), enigmatic model Marguerite (Saoirse Ronan) and her doctor father (Jerome Flynn) but the course of Armand’s amateur detection is perhaps less impressive than the explosion of near psychedelic colourisation articulating it. 21 Nov TOMORROW (DEMAIN) (PG) Acton Scott VH 01694 781260 21 Nov CHURCHILL (PG) The Royal British Legion Hall, Newport 07886 697934 22 Nov THEIR FINEST (12) Chetton VH 01746 789257 23 Nov HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Almeley VH 01544 327195 23 Nov HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (12A) Castlemorton Parish Hall 01684 833549 24 Nov THE GRADUATE (15) Clungunford Parish Hall 01588 660159 24 Nov LION (PG) Little Wenlock VH 01952 505888 24 Nov HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) The Red House, Albrighton 01902 373854 24 Nov VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) Longden VH 07539 545846 24 Nov VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 24 Nov MY COUSIN RACHEL (12A) Conquest Theatre, Bromyard 01885 488575 24 Nov ANOTHER MOTHER’S SON (12A) Knighton Community Centre 07751 221487 25 Nov HAMPSTEAD (12A) Withington Parish Room 01743 709236 25 Nov CHURCHILL (PG) Ripple Parish Hall 01684 592781 25 Nov THEIR FINEST (12) Neston Civic Hall 0151 336 7805 25 Nov VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) Clifton on Teme VH 01886 812238 25 Nov SULLY - MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON 912) Cleobury Mortimer Parish Hall 01299 271129

food page The Angel, Kingsland
F
ROM the outside, The Angel is an attractive looking village inn, although the pale green painted timber frame might set alarm bells ringing among architectural purists. Mr Pernickety visited the place in early October and found some good things to say. For one thing, this pub (which describes itself coyly on its website as a ‘Bar & Kitchen’) is obviously fulfilling its function as a traditional community pub, which is the prime and laudable purpose of any village inn. The evening Mr P and his daughter arrived there it was buzzing with locals exchanging gossip and drinking some of the good ales that the pub serves (a well-kept Butty Bach for Mr P) while a clutch of cheerful oldtimers played cards at a table beside a large, well-charged wood-burner. This is a place where an agreeable hour or two can be spent communicating, exchanging views and humour in the traditional way, without recourse to relentless tapping and swiping of smart phones and what the media insist on calling ‘Social Media’ – ‘Antisocial Media’ if you ask Mr P. It’s a lot easier to judge another’s veracity when looking them in the eye, while the internet is as much the natural home of mendacity and hyperbole as Rome’s Cloaca Maxima. However, when they sat down to dine, Ms P was aware of her father’s function that evening, and being generally of a more forgiving disposition, she was anxious to note that the serving staff were cheerful, polite and efficient. Although literate, articulate and in some ways as intolerant as her father, she didn’t object as vehemently as he to the subsequent order to ‘Enjoy!’ as each dish was delivered. Mr P’s public may know that he’s been grumbling about this irritating and plain rude use of the imperative for years, although so far without much effect. Perhaps the mostly young and female members of restaurant staff who use it believe that it makes them sound hip and at the cutting edge of social communication, or possibly that it adds to their customers’ enjoyment; it does none of these things. Sad to say, this was not the only source of Mr P’s dissatisfaction with The Angel as an eating house. While he’s conscious that his strong views on pub furnishings do not accord with everyone’s, this pub’s ancient innards have been abused so cruelly that it cannot have escaped the notice of a good proportion of visitors. Ornaments of cheaply manufactured bogus kitsch deface walls (already of an inapt and unpleasant hue) while some of the tables and chairs are almost offensively hideous and clunky. If the proprietors think they are making some kind of style statement, they’ve missed by a long way. Why, Mr P often asks himself, do so many naïve publicans indulge in such risky, untutored taste; ‘bland’ (as in, say, the Church Inn, Ludlow ) isn’t good, but it’s a lot better than ‘horrid’ (as in, for example, The Bell at Yarpole.)
26
To compound the unsettling lack of cohesion about the interior of The Angel, the choice of food on offer was similarly artless. Perhaps the owners feel that the
more ‘culturally’ diverse the range of dishes on offer, the greater the chance of pleasing the punters. In Mr P’s experience this is not a strategy that works. The first dish which Mr P and his daughter shared was a bowl of Cheesy Nachos with Guacamole and Salsa - a whacking great bowl of too much of them – not especially delicious but comforting face-stuffage which is difficult to stop eating until it’s all gone. Mr P resisted, though, in order to leave room for a main course beneath his straining belt. He was not sure how smart a move this was when his next course arrived. Billed as Ribs, with a Side of Coleslaw, Onion Rings and Chips it was unclear to him what species had died to provide the rack of bones on his plate. Whether pig or cow, they had a somewhat knackered air about them, which the kitchen had attempted to perk up by ladling on a heavy coating of muddy-sweet brown gloop, now congealing into a sticky blanket. It didn’t look good; it didn’t taste good, restricting Mr P to undressing just two or three of the slippery bones before he abandoned the whole platter. Ms P, however, currently in a vegetarian phase, had ordered a Roast Vegetable and Hazelnut Crumble with New Potatoes, which, she was anxious to point out, she was enjoying very much, although she too was full from over-indulgence of Nachos, and had to ask for a bag to take home what she hadn’t been able to eat. A helpful waitress happily complied. Mr Pernickety didn’t feel much like ordering a pudding, but his daughter insisted, and they opted for a New York Cheese Cake. Whether it was made in house or came from Messrs Brake Bros wasn’t clear, but they enjoyed it, and Ms P asked her father to mention also that there was a terrific selection of freebies in a basket in the Ladies’ Loo and she assured him that she’d enjoyed her dinner. He, on the other hand, had been too overwhelmed by his main course to feel the same. However, he acknowledged that he might have enjoyed just a few pints, chatting with the animated clientele at the bar. He feels, though that he could only recommend The Angel to those who while enjoying a drink in sociable surroundings have limited aesthetic sensibilities and no pressing need to eat. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots Air pollution – Are Petrol and Diesel Cars Running Out of Road? O
KAY – so we are finally getting the message about diesel vehicles. They are bad for our health. Their exhaust emissions are a key factor in about 40,000 early deaths every year in Britain. And that fact was rammed home when the government was ordered to reveal its plan to deal with air pollution before the general election. In compelling ministers to publish, high court judge Mr Justice Garnham noted that 64 deaths a day are linked to nitrogen dioxide, mainly from diesel vehicles. Now, within a few months of his ruling, UK drivers are starting to show a loss of confidence in diesels. In September their sales were down 20% against last year.
So, is it time for diesel drivers to make a screeching u-turn and head off to test drive a petrol car? Maybe not, because environment secretary Michael Gove has set up a menacing road block for both, only 23 years ahead. He says that sales of both diesel and petrol cars will be banned from 2040. You might not want to buy a used car from Mr Gove or to rely on him not to revise the deadline in a couple of years’ time. But you can see the general direction of travel. One response to the plan, from the Green Alliance, is that it is too little too late. They argue instead that Britain should ban diesel and petrol vehicles by 2030, thereby saving the country a ton of money in oil imports. As used car prices for diesels already begin to slide, the question now is whether electric cars can fill the gap. It is far too early to say whether they alone can bring about the huge cuts we need in greenhouse gas emissions and in air pollution. Indeed, under the government’s strategy, hybrid electric cars which also burn petrol or diesel, will escape the 2040 ban. The benefits of electric cars for the environment can’t be judged without a clear picture of where the electricity to power them will come from. The Telegraph reckoned it would have to be generated by a fleet of new nuclear reactors, and claimed that this meant the Gove plan was fast unravelling. I have limited patience with those whose knee-jerk reaction to any guestimate of future power demands is to wish ten or a dozen Hinkley Point nuclear power stations on us - not least because the cost to consumers and taxpayers would be astronomical. It used to be said the price of offshore wind power would be equally punishing. But while new nuclear power costs have risen ever upwards in Europe and America, those of renewables have fallen year after year.
50
In a recent UK auction for low carbon energy projects supported by government subsidies, contractors
for two offshore wind farms successfully bid power prices that were less than two thirds of the proposed guaranteed rates for Hinkley Point nuclear – quite a shock for the opponents of wind power. However, it’s no good thinking that electric cars will soon be clean and green just because wind and solar are making rapid advances. In early June this year wind and solar power broke records for electricity generation. Renewables were said to have produced over 50% of Britain’s power on one day for the first time ever. But this claim depended on classifying biomass burning as renewable power. On that June day, it turned out that 5.7% of our electricity came from biomass. Biomass is often described as waste wood but much of it is wood chips sourced from virgin forest thousands of miles away. And this fuel could produce emissions not so very different from those from coal. Yet in this country biomass gets renewable subsidies from the government. I have yet to see any compelling evidence that burning this stuff is sustainable or will help to curb climate change. Growing a new tree to absorb carbon dioxide and replace one burned as biomass may take many decades. A study by the Partnership for Policy Integrity, poses the question, “Is biomass worse than coal?” and answers, “Yes, if you’re interested in reducing CO2 emissions any time in the next 40 years.” There is also heated debate about biomass smokestack emissions. In a report funded by America’s Clean Air Council, Professor Christopher Ahlers of Vermont Law School concluded that wood burning causes “nearly as many carbon dioxide emissions as coal and…more CO2 emissions than natural gas.” So, are we back where we started? Not quite. To help cut air pollution, we need much cleaner vehicles. And fewer vehicles. Especially in our cities. Very hard to achieve, but it’s better to know the scale of the problem before we set out. Julian O’Halloran
