All Along the Watchtowers J UST back from Corsica, the stunningly beautiful mountain range that sticks out of the Med, South of France and West of Italy. All around the coast picturesque beaches and winding coastal roads. All up the middle, jagged rocks and a trillion trees. We took one of the world’s most diabolical rail journeys on the island’s single line from Ajaccio to Bastia through the mountains and then picked up two bikes in Borgo so we could continue our important research project - ‘Hiring holiday electric bikes in Southern Europe’. The plan was to explore the Cap Corse, which is the knob of land that sticks out of the Northern end of the island beyond Bastia. It looked on the maps to be sparsely populated and not quite so vertiginous as the middle of the island. The guidebook suggested that any trip round the coast should be in a clockwise direction to ensure that you are on the right hand side of the road and hence nearest the solid rock and furthest from the sheer drop to the sea. Somehow or other we managed to bugger up the Air BnB bookings so that we ended up going anti-clockwise and it was with some trepidation that we scuttled out of Bastia up the D80. Actually it wasn’t that scary on the East coast. The roads were good, the sun was shining and the light amount of traffic, although not keen to slow down, gave us plenty of room regardless of what was round the next bend. By the time we turned inland halfway up the Cap we were really having fun. Empty roads, nice places to stay although rather disappointingly the local mini supermarkets were all Spars, just like Presteigne! Masses of ham, salami, sheep and goat’s cheese and we saw a few goats and sheep but there was no sign of the pigs. Were they in the woods? Were they in internment camps? I have no idea even now. (Hang on, I just Googled it. The little black pigs all live in the South of the island).
All round the Island are 14th century Genoese, stone, watchtowers and enough ornate mausoleums to solve the London housing crisis in one swoop but thankfully Email: info@broadsheep.com no high rise tourist hotels. Corsica is also famous for its bloody anarchy and its abnorWebsite: www.broadsheep.com mally high murder rate. It manages to rival its, next door but one, neighbour Sicily for Mafia killings, despite only having 300,000+ inhabitants compared to Sicily’s 5 million. It doesn’t help that everyone has guns and knives so with 30,000 registered weapons on the island, it’s no surprise that every road sign is peppered with bullet holes and shotgun pellets. But, what the hell, we were blissfully unaware of all this as we gently pedalled our way up 5km climbs (those bikes with their Bosch motors were fantastic) and spin down the other side to the west coast, which was even more beautiful and certainly a lot scarier. Still I might have been a bit more careful when I got into an argument with the owner of ‘Le Pete, surprisingly not dressed in his usual black Chat qui Peche’ about the state of his steaks (Me - ‘Only fit for the chien’) and about us having left our hotel key in the room (Him - ’You stupid English. What you think the key is for?’) if I had known about the guns. Anyway after shouting at each other in the empty street, he phoned us in our room to ask if we wanted to put our bikes in the bar out of the rain, so I guess he wasn’t proper Mafia. The west coast got hairier and hairier, but then suddenly flattened out into the wine-growing region of Patrimonio and both breathed a sigh of relief. Great red wine and no sheer cliffs. If only I hadn’t been haunted by the feeling that on a foggy morning a week before I’d left the lights of the car on in Stanstead long stay car park. The Sleeping Dragon O NCE or twice a week in the spring and summer of 2014, I would walk across the fields between my home and Stapleton to visit the artist blacksmith Pete Smith, to catch up on the progress of the Sleeping Dragon, which was taking shape in his forge.
I had the honour, and the pleasure, to see the dragon in pretty much every stage of its construction; from photos of the initial clay model, to the chalk outline on the floor of the forge; from the actual construction of the steel frame, (from 700 feet of steel rods) to the painstaking (and painful) tying on of 50 metres chicken wire with 3500 zip ties; to the stretching and doping of the cheesecloth skin and the final paint job, I was lucky enough to follow the birth of the Sleeping Dragon from conception right up to the moment of her/his appearance by the roundabout in Presteigne. Pete’s idea came about because someone wanted to commission a statue commemorating the Welsh contribution to the First World War, the Great War, the War, as it was hilariously known, to End All Wars. They wanted a dragon. And Pete suspected – rightly as it turned out – that the commissioned dragon would be rearing in angry triumph, as though about to spew flames at its enemies. But this was to miss the point; 40,000 Welshmen died in the war. Is that a triumph? In what sense? For Pete, is was equally important to remember what was lost in terms of culture; how many poets, singers, artists were silenced? The Sleeping Dragon is not just a sculpture; S/He is also an act of performance art. The Sleeping Dragon appeared on August 3th, 2014, and will leave the site at dusk on 11th November 2018. Pete Smith hopes that anyone who had a relative who died in the war will send a British Legion cross, to be planted around the base of the dragon, so that when S/He goes, what will be left will be a void, an absence, a space where s/he once was. There is hope that another Sleeping Dragon might take his/her place; this will be 100% sculpture, rather than a sculpture/performance hybrid. (Crosses can be sent to Royal British Legion, Presteigne, Powys). I can only say what the Sleeping Dragon has meant to me. I had two great-uncles who died in the war;

one as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps, and one as an infantryman in the German Spring offensive of 1918. My paternal grandfather was too young to be in the forces. My step-grandfather fought as a boy sailor at Jutland – and never really spoke of the experience. Old men I remember from my childhood, who were there – they didn’t talk about what happened. Their slogan was not ‘never forget.’ It was ‘never again.’ Fifty years ago, when many of the old soldiers were still alive, there was not the kind of Remembrance commemoration that we are seeing this year. I know, because I am 60. Remembrance has become politicised; and those who don’t wear poppies (supposed to raise money for the war-wounded, rather than to be seen as virtue-signalling), are viewed as something approaching traitors. What is it that we are remembering? The UK is a country which still recruits under 18’s to the armed forces. Anywhere else in the world, we would call them what they are; child soldiers. The UK still earns billions from selling arms to brutal regimes, in particular Saudi Arabia, who bomb and kill and maim children everyday. With plucky British bombs. With heroic British highexplosives. The First War was the first time that the Ruling classes had encountered the working classes in any number; and they were shocked to discover how ill fed the infantry were, how malnourished – how small, how underfed. Tonight, as you read this, there are people in this country who subsist on handouts from foodbanks. This is a country which still turns its back on its service personnel; which abandons them to sleep rough on the street. The writer AL Kennedy has pointed out that no one bleeds poppy flowers, and that if we want a true representation of what the British state visited upon its people, we should pile offal at the feet of our war memorials. They treated us like meat. They still do. That is why the Dragon sleeps – S/He is in mourning. There is no triumph in this, no glory, no sacrifice. 40 000 Welshmen were murdered by their own government. The people who own this country and control it don’t care if we live or die. That is the enduring lesson of war. The Dragon sleeps, and is lost in nightmare. War is an obscenity, waged by nation states, against other nation states – it is not our business. We must not help them. Never again. Let dragons sleep. Ian Marchant

cinema THE WIFE (15) Niftily adapted from Meg Wolitzer’s fêted novel, this is a familiar story of an underrated power behind a smugly occupied t h ro n e , i n t h i s case the monarch being novelist Joe C a s t l e m a n (Jonathan Pryce) who is off to collect his Nobel gong in Stockholm with titular wife Joan (Glenn Close) and their sullen son (Max Irons). During the celebrations it becomes clear just how vital Joan’s role is in her husband’s success, and how little respect and recognition he’s paid her, but it takes Joe’s putative biographer, Nathaniel (Christian Slater) to sense the regret and resentment seething behind Joan’s loyal and witty carapace, auguring a masterfully evolved finale. The players here are all at the top of their game and following Emma Thompson’s recent performance in The Children Act, a battle for Oscar honours between her and Close is inevitable. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (12A) Originally slated for a 2017 release, director Brian Singer (The Usual Suspects, the X-Men franchise) repeatedly stopped shooting this rumbunctuous celebration of Queen’s career up until their legendary Live Aid perf or ma nc e ‘f or p e r s on a l reasons’. Actor/director Dexter Fletcher, whose musical credits include Sunshine On Leith was then co-opted to complete the work but the overall result is a seamlessly infectious biopic starring American t.v. actor Rami Malek as the suitably imperious, hugely talented but troubled Freddie Mercury. Unafraid to address Mercury’s wilfully wanton gay lifestyle and his ultimately lost battle with Aids, the film is still more about the music and the machinations within the industry that governs it, and neat turns for Tom Hollander and Michael Myers add to its considerable entertainment value. 17 Nov THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY (12A) Bicton VH 01743 850495 17 Nov INCREDIBLES 2 (PG) Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, Craven Arms 01588 676060 17 Nov THE GREATEST SHOWMAN SING-A-LONG (PG) Much Birch Community Hall 01981 540097 18 Nov LES JEUX INTERDITS (U) The Coach House Theatre, Malvern 01684 892277 19 Nov THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY (12A) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 20 Nov DARKEST HOUR (PG) Acton Scott VH 01694 781260 20 Nov CHURCHILL (PG) SpArC Theatre, Bishop’s Castle 01588 630321 21 Nov JOURNEY’S END (12A) Clun Memorial Hall 01588 640109 21 Nov THE HAPPY PRINCE (15) Escleyside Hall 01981 510352 21 Nov PUDLESTON FILM FEST Pudleston VH 01568 760606 22 Nov OCEAN’S 8 (12A) SpArC Theatre, Bishop’s Castle 01588 630321 22 Nov PHANTOM THREAD (15) Much Birch Community Hall 01981 540097 23 Nov JOURNEY’S END (12A) All Stretton VH 07812 583113 23 Nov THE PARTY (15) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 23 Nov FUNNY COW (15) Knighton Community Centre 01547 520602 23 Nov THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY (12A) Dorstone VH 01981 550943

THE RIDER (15) Brady is the titular bronco buster on South Dakota’s hayseed rodeo circuit, except that due to a serious head injury, he really isn’t anymore and struggles to adapt to a very uncertain future. His alcoholic gambler father and teenage sister with learning difficulties offer little emotional support and his best friend lies in hospital badly brain damaged by his own horrific rodeo accident. Superficially this isn’t a promising evening’s entertainment, but when you realise that the ‘actors’ here are playing themselves it becomes mesmerisingly engaging, and Chinese writer/director Chloé Zhao paints an evocative portrait of a disappearing rural Americana imbued with the hopes and dreams of her protagonists. Although there are echoes of Sam Peckinpah’s much glossier Junior Bonner, Brady Jandreau is a more complex character than Steve McQueen’s itinerant cowboy, and all the better for it.

food page Ask Italian, Hereford
B
EFORE Mr Pernickety gets stuck into the main subject of this month’s page, he returns briefly to a theme from last month – that of Her Majesty’s Government’s insistence that the British public may be permitted only to consume hamburgers that have been overcooked – and the difficulties that this directive creates for supreme Burger Meisters like Hereford’s Beefy Boys. Over a quick lunch at the excellent CSONS Green Café, by the salmon jump at Dinham Weir, Mr P and his ever-lovely companion enjoyed a burger that not only achieves the same heady heights of deliciousness as the BB’s product, but is also served delightfully, juicily, succulently rare! Hoorah! For this month’s review, Mr P thought he should take a fresh look at one of the high street chain restaurants that he is inclined to distrust. They abound in Hereford, on the brick-built wind tunnel that is the New Market Mall, and in the older streets of the much-abused city. Mr P found it hard to choose; they all look, sound and smell pretty much the same. Having asked a long-standing, elegant and witty friend, who two decades ago had invited him to a dinner party she was cooking for the then fresh and spritely Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s TV Dinners programme, he chose Ask in Broad Street, as it was short walk for his guest. At one o’clock on a Wednesday, the place was fairly empty, allowing Mr P a clear view of the bland, derivative furniture and plain walls that these kinds of establishments favour. Mr P’s guest, the LEWF, who can be a bit fussy, gazed around in disappointment and said she didn’t give a fig where she sat. They placed themselves by a wall, to better observe their surroundings. They were ushered their by an over-jolly waiter who spoke English with a faintly Italian accent as he took their order for a glass of Primitivo from Puglia – which was good but overpriced – and Pinot Grigiot, which the LEWF liked.
To start, Mr P ordered Meatballs Picante, which, although they were served looking slightly tired, as if they’d hung around for a while before being skilfully popped in the microwave, tasted OK, even enjoyable. In theory, there’s no reason why a well-prepared dish can’t be heated in a microwave and retain some flavour. Mr P’s guest was surprised that the ‘Italian’ waiter called her Bruschetta ‘brooshetta’. However, she ate it without grimacing, which Mr P took as a good sign, and she observed that at least the parmesan cheese that topped it was freshly grated as it was scattered across the plate.
24
So far, not so bad, they agreed, with Mr P, always fair, ready to rescind his prejudice against multiple eateries. However, things went downhill after that. The LEWF had chosen Salmon wrapped in Coppa Ham and roasted. She quickly concluded this was an unhappy combination, especially as the salmon hadn’t been boned or skinned. The outer edges of the concoction had been overheated, to the point of crispness, while the fish was dried out and bland; the gloopy tomato sauce did nothing to improve the dish. She ate two mouthfuls before giving up. Mr Pernickety’s Porchetta belly pork was worse. All the distinctive pork fat flavours had been cooked out of it, sitting on a small square slab of stuffing with squidgy roast potatoes which had gained nothing from their visit to the microwave. The pork meat was grey in colour and taste. Mr P managed only a few mouthfuls, then abandoned it. The waiter, perceiving their dissatisfaction, expressed his regret in a different voice, this time with more of a Slavic lilt to it, and offered them a glass of wine on the house, which they accepted, having wasted some £30 on two unfinished dishes. There seemed no point in trying a pudding after this; besides Mr P was feeling guilty about subjecting his friend, a talented amateur cook in her own right, to such a disappointing experience. The attractive profitability of mainstream Italian food (pizza, pasta and so on) has meant that many places serving it have opened over the last decade or so. Mr P knew an Italian who opened a pancake restaurant in London and told Mr P, “I take a sack of flour and turn it into a sack of money,” which seems like a sound business principle, but inevitably, there is now an oversupply of these places. Mr P believes that the public have become more savvy to the cynical exploitative nature of chains like Jamie’s Italian and Pizza Express, and it looks as if that particular party is now winding down. Mr P’s view of Ask? Don’t ask. www.misterpernickety.com

HEREVER you live in the Marches, it’s likely there’s a Choral Society within a 30-minute drive … and equally likely they will be giving one of their main concerts in November. The third Saturday is always popular – doesn’t clash with Bonfire Night, and with term starting in September it means there are just the right number of weekly rehearsals to prepare a substantial programme of one or two major choral works or a selection of shorter ones. If you’re reading this soon after publication you might just be in time to catch Ledbury Choral Society’s concert on 3 November in Ledbury Parish Church. They’ll be performing Vivaldi’s Gloria and Haydn’s Nelson Mass. (www.ledburychoral.btck.co.uk). The following evening, 4 November, in the Severn Theatre, Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury Choral Society joins what’s billed as a Consortium of Shropshire choirs to perform a new work by Bob Chilcott, Move him into the Sun, to mark the centenary of the death of the Shropshire-born poet Wilfred Owen and the end of the First World War. (www.shrewsburychoral.org.uk) Bromyard Choral Society also marks the WW1 centenary with a performance of The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins, at the Courtyard, Hereford on Saturday 11 November, paired with John Rutter’s Gloria (www.bromyardchoral.x10host.com). But the busiest date is that third Saturday, 17 November. You can hear Benjamin Britten’s St Nicholas and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms in the Blake Theatre, Monmouth (www.monmouthchoralsociety.co.uk); Handel’s Messiah in Leominster Priory (www.leominsterchoralsociety.co.uk); Poulenc’s Gloria and Vaughan Williams’s Hodie in Worcester Cathedral (www.worcesterfestivalchoralsociety.org.uk); or a programme of Choral Classics in Hereford Cathedral (www.herefordchoralsociety.org). Popular favourites such as Handel’s Zadok the Priest and Cesar Franck’s Panis Angelicus will be slipped into Hereford Choral Society’s programme, which is built around works by Sir Hubert Parry, who lived near Gloucester and died one hundred years ago. It includes Parry’s wonderful Coronation anthem I Was Glad; a rarely-heard Magnificat that was written for the Three Choirs Festival in 1897; the beautiful ode to music Blest pair of sirens; Jerusalem; and Land of Hope and Glory. The ladies of the choral society will also perform The March of the Women by Dame Ethel Smyth, a prominent member of the women’s suffrage movement. Dedicated to Emmeline Pankhurst, The March of the Women became the official anthem of the Women’s Social and Political Union.

Hereford is one of the largest choral societies in the Marches, with around 150 auditioned singers, and is conducted by Geraint Bowen, Director of Music at Hereford Cathedral. If you want to work hard and perform challenging music to a very high standard, this is the choir for you; you can also do a more rigorous audition and join the Hereford contingent of the Three Choirs Festival Chorus. Most of the societies in smaller towns are not auditioned, but some state in their information for new members that an ability to sing in tune is essential and the ability to read music is helpful. One choir that is punching above its weight at the moment is Kington Choral Society (www.kingtonchoral. org.uk), whose current musical director, Robert Evans, is a professional singer who regularly appears with The Sixteen, The Cardinall’s Musick, Tenebrae and other chamber choirs. He has been inviting his colleagues to come over to Herefordshire and sing the solos in some of Kington Choral’s concerts. Their recent Bach St John Passion in Presteigne really benefited from having a team of soloists who know the work very well and are used to singing with one another; the inspirational effect on the choir was obvious. Earlier this year the choir also ran an excellent masterclass for young singers with Julie Cooper, a soprano with The Sixteen, who spent an afternoon in the Assembly Rooms, Presteigne, working with young singers from the area. Kington Choral’s autumn concert is on Saturday 24 November in St Mary’s Church, Kington, when they will perform Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Charpentier’s sparkling Messe de Minuit pour Noël … ie, Midnight Mass for Christmas Eve. If you’d like to hear the whole of the Christmas story as told by J S Bach in his Christmas Oratorio, actually a series of six cantatas that would have been performed on the relevant church feasts from Christmas Day to Epiphany, head to St Laurence’s Church, Ludlow on 8 December. Patrick Larley has chosen this great work to bow out after 16 years as musical director of Ludlow Choral Society (www.ludlowchoral.org.uk). Clair de Lune

grass roots The UK & greenhouse gases – falling or going up? F
OR most of the last two decades, governments of both colours in the UK have claimed they have cut greenhouse gas emissions considerably compared with the 1990 figure. That year has been used as the baseline for British and global efforts to curb climate change. In March this year, the Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) trumpeted that new figures for 2017 showed that UK greenhouse gas emissions had gone down by 43% since 1990. A breathless sounding message from climate change and industry minister Claire Perry said “…fantastic news that we continue to lead the world in cutting our emissions while growing our economy.” Wow that’s impressive! Given that the official target is a cut of 80% in emissions by 2050, it looks as though we in Britain are almost half-way there! Marvellous! We can all stop worrying and go home, put on the kettle, and turn up the heating! But there is a problem with that apparent huge reduction in our emissions. The fact is that this figure accounts only for what’s been emitted here in the UK. And, sadly for Britain’s industrial workers, a big percentage of our manufacturing - plus all the emissions that go with it - has effectively been outsourced to other countries during the last three decades. When an imported foreign-built car hits the road in Britain and starts to pump out exhaust gases, nearly all the greenhouse gases linked to the vehicle’s manufacture have been emitted elsewhere in the world. And if you look at the greenhouse gas emissions linked to what we’ve consumed in Britain, as opposed to what we have produced here, things look a lot less impressive. In Britain, in the 1980s and 1990s, we were effectively outsourcing a lot of our industrial production to Asia, Europe and elsewhere. So, the official tables showing our greenhouse gas emissions since then look, at first sight, a lot lower than they ought to. Indeed, the expert committee set up by the government, the Committee on Climate Change, has said that, on the basis of consumption, Britain’s carbon footprint has actually gone up by 10% since 1990. A little noticed House of Commons committee summed up the situation succinctly as long ago as 2012. “The UK’s territorial emissions have been going down,” it said, “while the UK’s consumption-based emissions, overall, have been going up. The rate at which the UK’s consumption-based emissions have increased has far offset any emissions savings from the decrease in territorial emissions. This means the UK is contributing to a net increase in global emissions.”

Each day I receive an excellent newsletter called Carbon Brief. Its whole purpose is to get at the real facts on climate change and to assess where we have got to on curbing greenhouse gas emissions. I have a lot of time for the people who write it.
Claire Perry, Minister for Climate Change & Energy
But the idea that Britain, despite regular government boasting to the contrary, has been helping to cause a net increase in global greenhouse gas emissions, seemed to have hit them like a bolt of lightning when they learned of it three years ago, from a BBC report. Their article was headlined “Are the UK’s emissions really falling or has it outsourced them to China?” and they suggested that for greenhouse gas purposes, global trade should be tracked from the point of purchase and use back to the point of manufacture. If someone in Britain buys an Audi or an iPhone, they implied, then Britain should take ownership of the emissions needed to make those products and ship them to the UK. Actually, Carbon Brief found that the bulk of Britain’s outsourced emissions did not take place in China. China accounted for only a fifth of them. More were taking place in Europe and elsewhere. However, by March this year Carbon Brief seemed to have lost sight of its own very forceful argument. And, with other climate campaign groups, it went into celebratory mode to announce the steep drop in UK greenhouse gas emissions claimed by the BEIS department. Carbon Brief reported that, “The UK’s total CO2 emissions…are now as low as emissions were back in 1890 – the year the Forth Bridge opened in Scotland and Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray was published.” If that assertion rings hollow, I suspect it happened because even environmental campaign groups and climate experts have may have faulty memories. From time to time even they fall victim to Whitehall spin that tends to point to past successes rather than to current failures. No department wants to highlight its own shortcomings or to point out that some of the statistics it puts out year after year, showing it in a good light, are, at best, beside the point and, at worst, downright misleading.
