Dear Diary

L

OS Angeles Times in 1982: Comedian Charlie Fleischer observes: “If you remember the ‘60s, you really weren’t there.”

A friend has kept a regular diary and now in his late 70’s has been doing so since he was a kid. Why haven’t I done that myself? Then I would be able to re-live all those missing memories and although I have not learnt to play the piano, life would be almost complete. This is why I have decided to write belated diary entries for some of the events I witnessed during that grooviest of decades.

January 16th 1960 Have just got home from playing at St Mary’s Catholic youth club with our band The Strangers. We played Shadows numbers and I think it went ok. I used my new gimmick for the first time (knitting flannels with drumsticks between songs) and my sister said our matching blue cardigans with dark blue edging looked very smart. Still no girlfriend or any sign of puberty!!! October 10th 1962 That Beetles band just released a single ‘Love Me Do’ I haven’t heard it yet but I saw a picture of them in the window of Dick James publishing on Denmark St where we go every Saturday to look at guitars. I think we might change the style of The Strangers and go a bit more mod. Girlfriend – 0 Puberty - 0.75 November 24th 1963 Last night actually saw The Stones at Leyton Baths. It was a ruddy madhouse. Lots of rockers down the front doing their crazy dance. Appalling sound - as you’d expect in a swimming pool, plus a bunch of girls screaming like you see on the telly when The Beatles are on. Actually preferred The Dowliners Sect who played first, at least you could hear them and they featured a few Jimmy Reed songs. Wore my new button down shirt and blue nylon mackintosh. We are thinking of changing our band name to The Black Cat Bones. Still no girlfriend. May 15th 1964 We have been chosen to be on ‘Ready Steady Win’ next week. I think this is our big break! The Judges will include Murial Young and Kenny Lynch. The presenter is Gail Singelton who lives just down the road from us and is a big mate of our keyboard player Geoff Blyth. We are taking a whole rented double decker busload of supporters and school friends. Girlfriend – possibly Susan. Puberty Yesss! - Though as yet nothing worth shaving. June 27th 1964 Despite being the most authentic blues band on the show Kenny Lynch didn’t like us. He particularly disliked my song Railroad Ern about working laying sleepers on the Indiana trail “the gang leader said you’ve laid your last rail”. Last week saw Jimmy Reed in person at the Flamingo club in Wardour Street. No sign of Christine Keeler or the Beatles but feel we are now part of the London scene.

June 12th 1965 Earlier this year I read ‘On the Road by Jack Kerouac’ and last night I hung out with the beats!!! Email: info@broadsheep.com Alan Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Gregory Corso at the International Poetry Website: www.broadsheep.com Incarnation at The Albert Hall. On the instructions of our guitarist Barry I wore a black polo neck and I think I fitted in fine although I found Ginsberg’s incessant Ommming and playing finger cymbals very tiresome. July 17th 1966 Devastated to hear that Eric is leaving John Mayall to start his own band with Ginger Baker. I saw John Mayall last week and Eric was sitting on his amp looking out of salts all the way through. A gang of us has just been to Newcastle. We stayed in Geoff’s brothers house for the weekend and went to see the Pretty Things at the Mayfair Ballroom. When we went to get our tickets the girls outside, saw our long hair and thought we were the band. They chased us down the street screaming … It was brilliant! May 26th 1967 I have a girlfriend. She’s called Julie and she is in the Fashion department just below us at Bournemouth Art College. Her Mum and dad are working in Cyprus so she has the house to herself out near Hengistbury Head, which is great because my landlady is not that friendly since she discovered I am hiding her cardboard, breakfast toast in my sock drawer. Also there is a new album out by a guy called Jimi Hendrix and the new Beatles album Sgt Pepper’s is fucking amazing and I am living by the seaside and life is brilliant. May 25th 1968 Hornsey Art School sit in is an exciting end to a very disappointing year at Hornsey. I have a new girlfriend who is in the fashion department of the Royal College. I think I am going to give up college and music and be a motorcycle outlaw. September 2nd 1969 Just went to the Isle of Wight to see Bob Dylan. When I say ‘see’ we were so far away that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Roll on the seventies! Cover pic: Byron Wallen, Shrewsbury Jazz Network, The Hive, Belmont, Shrewsbury - 13 November

Sutton Walls’ Dark Secrets I

T ISN’T often that a truly epic archaeological discovery turns up on our doorstep. The last one that I can recall was the Rotherwas Ribbon back in 2007. That was the 75m-long serpentine path – thought to be a sacred burial route – linking the Dinedor Iron Age hill fort with the banks of the Wye. The route was paved with upturned split stones, not dissimilar in appearance to knapped flints. The county’s chief archaeologist described the find at the time as ‘possibly unique to Europe’. But that didn’t stop Herefordshire Council from burying the Ribbon beneath a new HGV feeder road to its Skylon Business Park.

her three seasons at Sutton Walls she recovered 20 adult male skeletons. At the time, the discovery was thought to have been the bodies of local warriors, unsuccessfully defending an attack by Romans. But local archaeologist Dr Keith Ray now believes that the remains are later, dating from the 8th century and may be those of the entourage which accompanied the East Anglian King Æthelberht on his ill-fated journey to Hereford to marry Alfreda, daughter of King Offa. Where all the skeletons uncovered by Kenyon’s team went to is unclear, making carbon-dating impossible. Enough to make Tony ‘Baldrick’ Robinson cry.

Perhaps 14 years on, the county has become slightly more enlightened about the importance of preserving our historical past. The Sutton Walls Conservation Group (SWCG) certainly believe so. Formed four years ago at the instigation of Historic England, when it was awarded a £12,000 Heritage at Risk Repair Grant, this small group of local volunteers is in the early stages of discovering just what man-made structures originally existed on and around a natural mound four miles north of the city at Sutton Walls, between Marden and Sutton Saint Nicholas. It is thought that the crude Iron Age timber and earth palisade was superseded by a more sophisticated stone structure, one of the seven royal residences of the legendary Mercian warlord King Offa (757-796AD). A 1999 edition of Channel 4’s ‘Time Team’ uncovered evidence of a huge grain store in the vicinity of Sutton Walls, as well as the outlines of two timber-framed watermills in a gravel pit at nearby Wellington, all indications of the royal estate’s considerable support structure.

Pre-empting Lady Macbeth’s infamy by several centuries, Offa’s wife Cynethryth poisoned her husband’s mind into believing that the arranged marriage was a mistake. On the eve of the nuptials, she hired assassins to strike down the 15-year-old king and his entourage inside the main banqueting hall at Sutton Walls. The suggestion is that the slain noblemen were buried together in a pit by the gateway. Æthelberht’s end was no less ignominious. Drawn on an open ox-cart, his decapitated cadaver was first flung into the River Lugg, then on passing through the hamlet of Lyde the head rolled off the cart and landed in a ditch. The following day a natural spring appeared at the point where the head had fallen.

The hill fort itself covers around 20 acres, partly wooded but with 13.7 acres at its eastern perimeter cultivated with crops. Over the years the site has suffered both from quarrying (huge quantities of gravel were excavated to build RAF Credenhill at the start of WWII) and indiscriminate land-filling. It is ironic to think that priceless archaeological evidence in the gravel may have inadvertently ‘migrated’ from one hill fort to another. SWCG intends to discreetly discourage burrowing mammals via fencing, giving archaeological protection to the Walls’ ramparts and ensuring the growth of different grasses and wildflower habitats, for the benefit of birds and butterflies.

6

The last serious archaeological investigation, more than half a century ago, was undertaken by the distinguished field archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon. During

Folklore or fiction, the story was strong enough for Hereford to successfully petition the Vatican for the beatification of Æthelberht, eventually leading to his papal canonisation. Offa himself atoned for the murder by founding monasteries and making a pilgrimage to Rome. Alfreda, haunted by the brutal assassination, fled Mercia to become an anchorite at a Benedictine abbey in Lincolnshire and remained there for the rest of her life. Such was the veneration later shown for the young martyred king, that at one time Hereford Cathedral’s popularity as a p i l g r i m a g e c e n t re w a s s u r p a s s e d only by Canterbury. More information on the hill fort, including some excellent aerial images, can be found at https://www.suttonwalls.co.uk. SWCG has also published a useful walking guide for the site, which is available from the Golden Cross at Sutton St Nicholas. cinema THE FRENCH DISPATCH (15) Wes Anderson is unarguably one of America’s most creatively influential filmmakers – read Wally Koval’s 2020 book, Accidentally Wes Anderson if proof were needed – as each new release reinforces. Delayed from 2020 by the pandemic, his latest is a total joy for Anderson fans. Building on the success, look and format of 2014’s GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL a terrific ensemble cast execute an arresting conceit, this time parodying the global if slightly smug reach of magazines like The New Yorker and Time. Written by Anderson and co-star Jason Schwartzman’s, here it’s a fictitious Kansas newspaper supplement which claims to reflect European culture from the whimsically named French burgh of Ennui Sur Blasé (geddit?). From there, and indeed elsewhere, Anderson regulars play self-important hacks and editors including a sublimely cantankerous Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Anjelica Huston, Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody and Edward Norton, plus Francis McDormand, Benicio del Toro, Jeffrey Wright, Elizabeth Moss and more. As ever, Robert Yeoman (cinematography), Adam Stockhausen (production design) and Andrew Weisblum (editor) ensure that THE FRENCH DISPATCH is visually stunning and breathtakingly paced whilst never losing its narrative and immensely comic grip. A must see. Mark Williams

M

R PERNICKETY has been eating in restaurants around the world for many years and, for the last decade, reviewing those in the Marches on behalf of readers of the region’s most comprehensive Guide to the Arts. Over this time, he has been determined not to allow his pallet to become jaded or unexcitable. Nevertheless, seeking out new and stimulating gastronomic experiences seems, after the last ghastly two years, to have become more challenging and, gratifying though it would be to blame the stand-up comic who now runs this country, culpability must largely lie with the dreary multiple restaurants that infest the streets of our towns and cities. The dishes offered on the lacklustre menus of places like Zizzi, Ask, Jamie’s Italian (RIP), and Wildwood (partially RIP), despite the usual descriptions of local and seasonal ingredients and inspirational chefs, are concocted in head offices, manufactured in central kitchens and sent out frozen, to be warmed up in microwave ovens on the premises. There is a blandness and sameness to this food, up with which large sections of undiscerning British restaurant-goers seem prepared to put. Thus, they are partially to blame too. This month Mr P was anxious to eat at an establishment firmly outside this depressing norm. Scrolling through the options on a popular online restaurant finder, he came across such a place in Hereford – the Mediterrané, in the unpromising surroundings of Red Barn Drive, an industrial estate and busy route for rumbling juggernauts seeking Bulmers’ back entrance. On the face of it, occupying one end of a large warehouse, with no obvious concessions to prevailing concepts of restaurant presentation, Mr Pernickety’s heart sank as he and his Lovely Companion parked the Volvo outside. He had forgotten the sound advice offered by the late Mr Bo Diddley – that you can’t judge a book by looking at the cover – and was sure he was in for an ordeal that would lead him to deploy his most acerbic nib. As they pushed open an aluminium framed door into an area of shiny zinc canteen self-service counters, and walked past an open kitchen, where a man in a chef’s toque was occupied between a battery of cookers, through into the profoundly unchic dining area, Mr P’s first impression persisted. As they sat down, he apologised to the LC for bringing her to such a place. But she has a more subtle, less

22

conventional sense of the aesthetic than Mr P, and was looking around with unexpected animation. ‘This’, she said, ‘could turn out to be good!’ She took in all the nuances of the interior – the plastic plants, turquoise plastic banquettes, wooden school chairs, melamine-topped tables, big television screens set high on the walls, dim ceiling lights. ‘It’s so kitsch. I love it. I feel like I’m on holiday, in a local family restaurant that would be very busy. Maybe in a suburb of Athens, or Naples, or Bilbao.’ The man in the kitchen, who turned out to be the only staff on the premises, came over with menus. There were surprises – a set price of £15 for a starter, main course and side dish. And punters had to bring their own wine, for which no corkage was charged. Mr P hadn’t brought any wine, but a quick dash to the One-Stop a few hundred yards away along Grandstand Road yielded a bottle of Chilean merlot. The proprietor/chef brought over a jug of tap water. The menu, consistent with the restaurant’s name and evident schtick, offered a selection of dishes from around the shores of the Mediterranean. It was fun choosing, and the LC was enjoying herself more than for a long time on Mr P’s restaurant forays on behalf of the readers of the WO. To start, she chose Coullouché – dough balls stuffed with tomato sauce, olives chillies, herbs and spices. She found them surprisingly light and very much enjoyed them but was kind enough to pass one over to Mr P, who found the same. He had been very stimulated by his own first course – Pepe Cozzé – mussels cooked with onion, garlic, red chillies, paprika and lemon juice, the kind of truly uplifting dish that brings an involuntary smile. He followed this with Beef Fungioli – chunks of beef with mushrooms in a delicious aromatic sauce. The LC’s D’agneau was lamb in a yoghurt and mint sauce with aubergines and chickpeas – a combination with subtle delicate flavours to it. Both agreed that their food had been wonderfully unusual, and entirely delicious. Mr P felt like a robber when he was given a bill for just £30. And how right the LC’s first impression had turned out to be. Mr Pernickety

grass roots Broken, bruised & blighted - UK fishing after Brexit

T

HREE years ago, leading conservatives promised that, in the wake of Brexit, UK fishermen would get a fairer share of the fish caught around Britain. Michael Gove, Theresa May, and the Scottish Tory leader, Ruth Davidson, all pledged that better times were ahead for the UK fishing fleet, under deals which the government would sign with European neighbours. Some Tories spoke of “a sea of opportunity” as the UK extracted itself from the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy. And last year Boris Johnson backed that up in his own words. “We will take back our fisheries,” he said, “and we will boost that extraordinary industry.” Maybe fishing chiefs were naïve to take those words at face value. But as time has gone by it seems that even sceptics in the fishing industry have been shocked by just how worthless those pledges have proved to be. In July, the head of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations expressed dismay at the course of events since January 1st. Barry Deas told City AM, “The flags flying over our vessels for the last couple of years had a slogan which was, “Fishing – No Sell-Out!”, and that really spelt out our fears. Those flags now seem both politically astute and prescient because that’s what’s happened...It’s a tale of woe, very far from the sea of opportunity that some spoke about.” In Wales, skippers have suggested they fear that in some inshore waters their small vessels are at risk of being swamped by much bigger French and Belgian trawlers until at least 2026. And, in Devon, one fish merchant has described how his business was brought to its knees, almost overnight, by Britain’s departure from the EU. Ian Perkes, of Brixham, told Byline Times he now regretted voting for Brexit. “If I could turn back the clock, would I have voted Leave?”, he said. “Of course not! I think me and many others have made a mistake.” In a commons debate in May, Emma Hardy, Labour MP for Kingston Upon Hull West and Hessle, said that “Fishers from Penzance to Peterhead are out of work and angry.” She alleged that ministers had sat back and let the whole industry sink. The deep-sea fishing fleet had been “...holed below the water line by a government who have failed to secure a single fisheries deal with any of their northern neighbours.” Fisheries minister Victoria Prentiss conceded that adjusting to Britain’s post-Brexit role as an independent coastal state was challenging, but she was confident that a bright and sustainable future for British fishing lay ahead.

42

However, a former civil servant at DEFRA, the department responsible for fisheries, has shocked both fishing bosses and Brexiteers by producing his own study predicting heavy losses by the industry over the next half decade. Gary Taylor, whose role was to negotiate for Britain with the EU on fishing quotas, reckons UK fishing will lose £64 million annually in the years to 2026.

More than half of the UK’s fishing fleet is based in Scotland. Its industry chiefs are also alarmed at the impact of Brexit on their boats and crews. The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation has called the UK’s share of catches post-Brexit “miniscule, marginal, paltry, pathetic.” Dr Bryce Stewart, a senior environment lecturer at York University, says that, based on the maths, the agreement between Britain and the EU has ended up much closer to the EU’s initial position than to the UK’s. As to whether the current deal on fishing will finally calm the seas, he is far from sanguine. And he reckons that climate change will add to the conflict in future, “wreaking havoc” on fish stock distribution. Most of the fish caught by UK vessels is exported. Whoever actually lands the fish, the key thing is that the fishing is carried out sustainably. But over the last 20 years, there has been over-fishing on a severe scale. One example is mackerel, which lost its sustainable status in the north-east Atlantic two years ago. And last year the UK was among six countries judged to be guilty of exceeding maximum sustainable catches for several categories of fish. The fisheries department, DEFRA, has spoken of the need to share fishing opportunities on a fair and scientific basis. But the whole Brexit process has been marked by an ugly contempt for our European neighbours by some in Britain. And there’s been a reflex to blame the EU for all that goes wrong. Our decades in the EU were marked by an almost routine bust-up in Brussels every December as countries squabbled with each other, and with EU officials, over fishing quotas being allotted for the following year. In future, Britain’s share of the fish around these islands will depend on the Brexit deal signed in 2020. But the EU nations which buy UK fish will be able to apply tariffs from 2026 onwards. So, it’s likely that the conflict over catches and EU quotas is very far from being a thing of the past. Julian O’Halloran
