BROAD Have I Got News For You? No! T

sheep

HESE days there is a huge appetite for News and it comes in all shapes and sizes. From Auntie BBC in Syria to the most fatuous entertainment facts about Jennifer Anniston’s dress sense. From rabid, right-wing, born-again American propaganda to RT News with its jumble of incisive reporting and then two seconds later downright scurrilous lies. It’s all there. However, it took last week’s ridiculous spat between Tesco and Unilever about the wholesale price of Marmite for BBC News to finally hit its all time low. At one point a fearless BBC reporter was in Tescos in Swansea and in a live broadcast on Radio 4 was letting us know how many jars of Marmite were left in Tesco Express, (two as it happens). As always, with my finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist, I realised here was an opportunity made for Broad Sheep and I hurried off to Broad Sheep Towers to see if I could get approval Small Ads 4 from the Board of Directors to steam ahead with my new idea. Luckily I remembered we Philosophy 6 don’t have any directors so I was able to proceed with my own New Channel - ‘24 Hour Art 8 Rolling Trivial Facts You Don’t Need to Know About Presteigne Radio’. As you can imagine, like all Broad Sheep enterprises (who’d have thought anyone Art workshops 12 wanted to know who was playing at the Fish & Fiddle on Wednesday night), it’s been a Cinema 18 blinding success from the start and you can Dance 22 tune in on 72.1MHZ or digital and pick up on Food 24 the latest stunning uninteresting facts. In case you can’t afford a radio, here is a Music 26 sample of the last 24 hours broadcasting. Music workshops 38 8am. “Hi, this is Pete for Broad Sheep Radio, Band directory 40 reporting to you at great personal expence up Theatre 42 at this time of the morning, just to make sure Word 46 you will be able to get your breakfast Marmite Grass roots 50 fix”. “I’m just entering Costcutter now and I immediately spot on my right that stocks of Comp therapies 52 Valpolicella are a bit low, only one bottle left, but surprisingly there are vast quantities of Blossom Hill Rosé available. Plenty of mushrooms a bit brown around the edges. Very low on ownWe take no responsibility brand toilet paper and here we are now at the for the veracity of the Marmite section. Phew, the panic is over and there information herein is lots and lots of Marmite”. “This is Broad Sheep Pete Mustill Radio signing off from Costcutter”. “And remember Mayfield, Stapleton, ♫ If you can’t sleep, tune into Broad Sheep, it’s the Nr Presteigne, Powys paregoric that can’t be beat ♫”. LD8 2LW 10am. “This is Broad Sheep Radio reporting Tel: 01544 260051 Email: info@broadsheep.com outside The Dukes Arms. The pub is shut. What Website: www.broadsheep.com do you expect it’s ten o’clock in the morning”. “♫ Don’t have a clue where to go. Neither does Broad Sheep Radio ♫”. 12 noon. “There is a traffic jam in the High Street. That’s because no one parks in the car park because you have to pay”. “♫ In the day or in the dark, Broad Sheep tells you where to park ♫”. 2pm. “There is a spare seat outside the Morrocan Cafe. If you get up here pronto you can grab it. Ring me now and I’ll sit in it till you turn up”. “♫ Desperate to put up your feet, Broad Sheep Radio will find your seat ♫”. 4pm. “Hi Broad Sheep, reporting from the main car park. It’s still empty. What’s the point of having a bloody great empty car park and big jams in the High Street 50 yards away? They should make it free to residents and all traders and solve Presteigne’s parking problem in one simple step.” “Hang on, this is getting a bit too serious, it’s more like Newsnight than Broad Sheep Radio. I’ll put on a jingle quick”. “♫ Broad Sheep Radio’s loads of fun. It appeals to everyone. Every mother, every son. Sing Broad Sheep Radio’s number one ♫”. 6pm. “ Hi, it’s Pete reporting for fabulous Broad Sheep Radio. I’m very cold, very hungry and very bored. I know I said it was a 24 hour rolling inconsequential news channel, but frankly I’ve had enough. “♫ 24/7 was a stinking lie, Broad Sheep Radio says goodbye ♫”.

Who Are You Calling Normal? I

T might be just a sign of ageing but I seem to have developed a disturbing habit. Nothing illegal, mind you, and nothing that costs money, except the price of a cup of tea and a doughnut. But in any case it’s not my fault. Not at all. The blame lies fairly and squarely with Mr. Blewit. If his shop hadn’t been open every Saturday and hadn’t been just round the corner from the pub in Dudley kept by my grandparents, none of this would have happened. As a child I was very bookish and Mr. Blewit’s shop, you see, was a book shop. It was a shop offering exciting new worlds, adventures, thrills, all available once you crossed his palm with not much silver. A few of the books bought from Mr. B’s Shop of Dreams are still on my shelves, sixty years later. Companions of a lifetime. Some of his books were easily affordable, costing just pence, such as the tiny ‘I Spy’ books, delightful but ever so addictive. In one book you might be looking out for different sorts of trees, in another, lorries or farm animals. Every time you ‘spied’ something you won a point. You ticked a box. These little books encouraged children and their parents to keep their eyes open and to be more aware of their surroundings. But thanks to Mr. Blewit I’ve now embarked on my very own, very risky, ‘I Spy’ quest. Oh yes, these days ‘I Spy’ NORMAL people! Practical fieldwork for this is carried out whenever I go to Aberystwyth and sit at a certain café window overlooking a busy street. In no time at all scores of people pass by, providing ideal spying conditions. Or so you would think. But guess what? - ‘normal’ people are few and far between, at least in Aberystwyth. If not actually on the brink of extinction, certainly rare birds. They should probably be registered as an endangered species. To give you, dear reader, some idea of just how difficult it is to spy a ‘normal’ person in Aberystwyth [and presumably elsewhere] I refer you to recent entries from my ‘I Spy Normal People’ notebook: That man there: quite smartly dressed, superficially normal, but has green hair. So NOT normal. And look at her: a woman in her sixties, a bulging shopping-bag in one hand, and in the other a leash attached to a Staffordshire bull terrier. Nothing abnormal about that, except for one small detail: it’s a dog on wheels. She walks past as if exercising a pretend dog was the most normal thing in the world. But it isn’t. And no one, but no one, bats an eyelid. Look over there: a young man dressed as a sheep. You can tell it’s a man because he’s carrying the sheep’s head in his hands, revealing a man with a huge red beard. Normal? I think not. Nor is that woman: she’s smoking a pipe, moreover a pipe emitting clouds of purple smoke. So far my spying activities are scoring ZERO POINTS.

6

Same café later in the day. A girl comes in, sporting a T-shirt with [in Welsh] the words ‘Plato Was Wrong’. And then a large camper-van drives past. It has to stop right outside the window because of traffic. This enables me to read the fascinating question written on the side the vehicle: ‘What if the Hokey Kokey IS what it’s all about?’ I

catch sight of the driver - it’s the woman with the pretend bull terrier! A thought comes to mind: is the world about to end? Or perhaps it’s ended already? Maybe if I ventured into the university? Would that yield better results? Not a chance! If my experience has taught me anything at all it’s that a university is the least likely place on the face of the planet to find anybody remotely normal. However, my failure to spy normal people is not as depressing as you might think, because it has prompted a few intriguing, and without doubt topical and urgent, questions. What if....[I hesitate to type the next words] what if there is no... such... thing... as... normal? Or, even more worrying, what if the explanation for not spotting any normal people in Aberystwyth is quite simply that EVERYONE there [as elsewhere] is ABNORMAL? Yes, everyone. Spot someone who seems normal, dig a little more deeply and - hey presto! - you find they are not normal after all. In which case, what’s normal is to be abnormal. Maybe we’re all just different from one another? A puzzle to end with: what kind of person would you say is most different from you? But different how? - now that’s the point. [Anyone got a couple of paracetamol?] Philosopher-in-Residence

cinema THE 9TH LIFE OF LOUIS DRAX (15) Shelved after the deaths of its original Oscar-winning screenwriter Anthony Minghella and director Sydney Pollack, Liz Jensen’s best-selling novel finally hits the screen directed by Alexandre Aja (THE HILLS HAVE EYES) but written by Minghella’s son, Max. This gripping, supernatural thriller follows the blighted life of young Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) who suffers a violent accident every year, ending up in a coma after a cliff fall on his 9th birthday. When a top neurologist (Jamie Dornan, 50 Shades Of Grey) attends the boy, he’s intrigued by Louis’ catalogue of near-death disasters and begins to unravel the mysteries that prompted them – an extraordinary conflation of reality, riddles and dark secrets, whilst also falling for Louis’ mother (Sarah Gadon, Elizabeth in A Royal Night Out).

D E E P WAT E R HORIZON (12A) Maverick director Peter Berg reunites with h i s L O N E SURVIVOR star M a r k Wa h l b e r g in this fact-based drama centred on the worst oil spill i n U . S h i s t o r y. Wahlberg plays a wise-cracking engineer leaving his anxious wife (Kate Hudson) and daughter for a 21 day stint on the titular DEEPWATER HORIZON, along with safety-conscious senior officer Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell) and marine engineer Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriguez). Confronted by cost-cutting executives from the rig’s owner led by a sneery Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich), their watch soon becomes a battle of wills swiftly followed by a crippling blow-out which imperils the entire crew and kills 11 of them. Berg’s talent for fast-paced dramatic twists allied to stunning special effects contribute to an awesome disaster movie which is also both morally underpinned and emotionally charged.

MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE (15) Unlike Alex Gibney’s exactingly serious 2015 documentary GOING CLEAR, the ever playful yet insightful BBCtv investigator Louis Theroux and his co-writer/director John Dower now more-orless lampoon the highly secretive Church of Scientology. Co-opting the Church’s most notable defector, Mark Rathbun, they re-enact a training stint for new recruits, the scare tactics employed by its leader, David Miscavige and a casting session for a fake Tom Cruise, its most famous convert. Theroux’s flair for disarmingly undermining psychopaths and the wilfully misguided – think white supremacists, paedophiles and ultra-zionists – remains to the fore, but when it becomes clear that the Church is filming him filming them and threatening his crew with legal recriminations, the full might and paranoia of the organisation chills both him and his audience.

HOSE who are regular readers of Mr Pernickety’s column should have gathered before now that he favours pubs of the old tradition – those, in other words, whose primary function is to serve good, well-kept beer and provide an ambiance in which local people and curious strangers can exchange views on level ground; where the mole-catcher and the hedge-fund manager in the manor house, the small-holder and the American tourist in hired ‘Jagwar’, the tractor driver or a member of the family whose arms are on the pub’s sign can mix without reference to the differences in their wealth or standing; where the farm worker’s voice carries as much authority as the squire. The true English pub is a place where the pub landlord is visible and in charge, and in which those class distinctions that still remain are neutered. This, above all, is the raison d’etre (correspondent of Knighton please note – no typographical error this month) of the public house, equal in importance to the quality of ales it serves and the way they are presented, while the provision of victuals is merely a supplementary, sometimes unwelcome activity. Mr P was reminded sharply of these desirable qualities when revisiting a former and much favoured watering hole, the Cross Keys Inn on the road from Hereford to Bromyard at Withington. This is a very good example of what a country boozer should be and do; there have been few changes to this place since Mr P first frequented it nearly thirty years ago, where the landlord himself has barely altered, beyond a few faint streaks of grey in his fox-hued beard, a man who is a fount of rustic lore and up-to-date with all the local news a punter could want. Which reminded Mr P again of the sadness of the disappearance of publicans like Mr Corbin, whose presence is an essential element of a pub’s persona, where the drinker drops in as much for a chat with the landlord, as for the beer. There is, though, more than a hint of this quality in an excellent, if somewhat furtive parlour pub that was opened quite recently at 14, Corve Street in Ludlow by Mr Jon Saxon. The Dog Hangs Well has no external sign and is open only between 5pm and 9pm from Thursday to Saturday. In the front parlour, which looks as if it was furnished over a hundred years ago, the potted palms and arm-chairs with anti-Macassars offer a good place for a quiet chat, while the tap-room, cluttered with taxidermy and pub-related stuff is more of an open forum. A choice of one beer and one cider (which change weekly) are offered. (As a general guide, though, beware of brews with names like Badger’s Breath, Ferret’s Tinkle or

Floppidik). There is no food (apart from pork scratchings), no Sky Sports, and no music, but there is much ambiance within the short window of its opening for chat about the niceties of ale-tending, about local politics, the shortcomings of the town’s other hostelries, and whether or not the combined IQ of Ludlow town council adds up to 100. Another Herefordshire pub, The Royal George at Lingen, also fulfills these requirements. In the midst of a splendid, lively village, the George not only serves good beer (sensibly offering just two), for which it received a CAMRA award a few years ago, it is also filled with a pleasing soft hubbub of bucolic conversation, contained between hop-garlanded beams, well-tended wood-burners and comforting ancient walls. Window sills and shelves are stuffed with knick-knackery of variable quality, and some of the furniture is pretty awful, but this is beside the point and anyway reflects a charming, unpretentious authenticity about the place. The food they serve is similarly unpretentious – good honest pies, steaks and puds, with not a drop of drizzled jus in sight. Mr P, as ever accompanied by his Lovely Companion, had settled at a discreet corner table, when her pert little ears pricked up, recognising the distinctive American chuckle of a former colleague and fellow clutter merchant – a spritely goodnatured Daughter of Alabama and her friend, an English Bearded Pedagogue, who live nearby. They came and sat with Mr P and the LC who had already ordered, too late to take advantage of the D of A’s commendation of the various pies on offer, which as a regular and a part-time pint-puller in the pub, she knew all about. Mr Pernickety started with a duck and green fig paté which was light and creamy; the LC was pleased with just a mouthful. Without foreknowledge of the excellence of the pies, they had both ordered steaks, Mr P a large rump, and the LC a smaller sirloin, both good, both properly rare as ordered; the Diane sauce though disappointed them, and didn’t help their enjoyment – partly, Mr P guesses, because they’d stupidly thought they were going to get something more like a Bearnaise sauce. When they’d finished, Mr P was offered a taste of the D of A’s Fish Pie, which was stuffed with flavoursome fish. He also tried a forkful of the BP’s Chicken and Leek Pie, which reminded Mr P how good a simple home-made pie can be when the pastry’s right. With a couple of glasses of the Cab Sauv (identity unknown but good enough) the LC ordered an Apricot Bread’n’Butter Pudding, which she declared was light and springy with a satisfyingly crunchy top. Mr P

ordered a gooseberry crumble because he was told that a little old lady brought the goosegogs round on her bicycle, straight from her garden. There was no good reason why this should have made the crumble better, but it was – a good topping with the right ratio of crunch to lightness, and a lovely sweet stew of gooseberries below. An ideal finish to satisfying dinner. The Royal George is a real pub, with real food, and a real landlady who knows how to run it. And- a good bonus – the journey to Lingen, from whatever direction, is through some of the finest, most uplifting landscape to be found anywhere in England. www.misterpernickety.com

ON THE POWER OF NOT INVESTING Divestment from fossil fuels aims to morally bankrupt the fossil fuel companies, thereby weakening their political influence and creating the space for meaningful action on climate change. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has promised to ‘take all possible steps’ to divest the City’s £4.8 billion pension fund out of fossil fuels after his predecessor, Boris Johnson, refused to do so.
