We Deserve a Happy Ending T

HERE are a lot of jokes about having to find a seven year old if you don’t know how to switch on your TV and in our case, they were all true.

We would never have been able to negotiate our way through the minefield of 90’s digital technology without having our resident computer nerd. Digital cameras, digital sound recorders, digital TV, scanners, printers, computers, producing this bloody magazine it would all have been a nearly impossible without ‘the kid’. Even when he left home it was still possible to ring him up and get him to explain how to turn your jpgs into pdf’s or whether or not to buy a Mac or a P.C. These days he’s way too busy for the likes of us, he’s rushing round the globe doing ‘God knows what’ on other computers. When I say ‘God knows what’ that is literally true. Sometimes I try and explain what he does to friends but I haven’t a clue what I’m talking about. Here is his own description of one such project. Music of the Spheres is a collaboration between visual artist Charlotte Jarvis and British scientist Dr Nick Goldman, who have taken a piece of specially commissioned music from the Kreutzer Quartet and stored it as digital information in synthetic DNA molecules. The team have suspended the DNA in soap solution, and with the help of artistic production company Artists & Engineers they want to raise money to create installations where bubbles fill the air, pop on visitors’ skin and “bathe” the room in music. See what I mean! Anyway recently having had a couple of years off making videos, I decided it was time Little Rumba had a new one to go with their album ‘Cafe Perdido’. I had been eyeing up other people’s You Tube films and two in particular had caught my eye. The first was ‘In Hell I’ll be in Good Company’ by The Deep South. It’s a pretty slick vid, but the extraordinary thing is, despite the band being quite unknown, the video has gone nuts. I just looked and it has 25 million views on You Tube! We were offered them by their agent to come and play in Presteigne, but by the time we emailed back within two or three hours, all the UK dates had already been booked. The other one I’ve got a soft spot for is ‘We Deserve a Happy Ending’ by the Rev. Peyton’s Damn Band. It really made me chuckle. The Dead South

So suitably inspired, when the kid said he was coming home on a lightning visit, I got him to agree to help make our new vid.

Clare Edwards

Along with a cast of thousands from Presteigne and Alex on the other camera, we had a very Hereford, HR1 3RQ fun afternoon shooting a lot of Tel: 01432 850444 nonsense in the Moroccan Deli on Email: info@broadsheep.com the corner of the High Street. The The Rev. Peyton’s kid did a lightning edit and then Damn Band Website: www.broadsheep.com disappeared back into the real world and I spent the next three days watching ‘Teach Yourself Premier Pro CC Videos’ in order to put on some titles and change one bit of the film from colour to black and white. If you’d like to see the result it’s up on You Tube now it’s called ‘Poisson Rouge - Little Rumba’. Let’s see if we can get 25 million views by next Thursday. The Lodge, Westhide,

Talking of the Moroccan Deli, it was also the venue for a final dinner with the Broad Sheep Contributors and a chance to thank them for all the brilliant articles we’ve had over the years. Farid is an excellent host and you can see him complete with fez, making a cameo appearance in the video. I would like to thank Print Plus, Hereford for being such reliable and supportive printers of Broad Sheep over the last 20 years. The magazine always looks great and I can highly recommend them for any print work you need. I’d also like to acknowledge Nicky Warwick’s contribution to Broad Sheep. She not only looked after all the accounts and invoicing but has kept all the directories running at the same time. Without her, Broad Sheep would have gone down the pan long ago. So I’m about to head off to France and for the first time in 25 years I actually don’t have to come back! Of course, there is that gig and that dentist appointment, but still... A Classical Piece A

S the Presteigne Festival fades into the brilliant dazzle of a sunlit August and the rain comes sweeping in, the old questions resurface. How does all this water get into the sky and why is it falling on us? Why is human existence a feature of this tiny planet lurking on a limb of an insignificant galaxy in a universe apparently limitless? And what the hell, actually, do orchestral conductors do? All right, all right, all right. They stand up the front in a thing like a one-man boxing ring and wave a short white stick to and fro, roughly in time. Occasionally they get excited, and their clawhammer coats swirl in a breeze of their own making, and beads of sweat roll down their intellectual brows. Even more occasionally they feel hostile towards the orchestra, and scowl horribly. On very rare but extremely interesting occasions they get pissed off with the singer, and you can see them longing to ram the baton up the nostril of the soprano who is substituting a massive vibrato for actually hitting the note. But mostly they are cool as a mountain stream, and the audience reckons they are up to something elevated and mysterious. Which is not always the truth. When Pete Townsend did his famous human windmill manoeuvre with the Who, you knew something was happening. When Jerry Garcia took a mazy half pace towards stage front, it was possible to divine that something was going to take place. But when Herbert von Karajan raised the baton, you were never quite sure whether the orchestra was going to burst into a touch of Wagner or whether he was showing the Fuhrer’s troops the way to Poland (first left, second right, follow der nose, four to the bar). I write this as I am watching Sir S Rattle conduct something or other by Schoenberg. I am illuminated, but not brilliantly. So I am ringing up the great Anthony Powers, a classical composer who has had

6

stuff on at the Proms and who now heads up It’s Our County, Herefordshire’s only honest, decent and sensible political party. And I am saying it like this. Anthony, what are conductors doing? And because he is an honest man, and speaks as he, he is saying, well, actually, not much. Into the night the discussion continues. What comes out of it in the end is that your ordinary conductor might as well not be there. But that your supreme or top-hole ace numero uno conductor, on a good night, can do plenty of telepathy, and the orchestra is a mere extension of his neural ganglia, if that is the expression I am groping for. Which come to think of it is pretty much where Jerry Garcia was coming from, and if you ask me, which I know you did not, just goes to show. People may say that there is classical and romantic and bebop and rockabilly and psychedelia and hip hop and prog rock and zydeco the rest of it. But in the end there is just music. Conductors? Feh. cinema KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE (15) Three years ago Kingsman: Secret Service was a global smash, so a sequel to this ever-soBritish spy actioncomedy caper was inevitable. Loosely based on the comic book created by Dave Gibbons and Mark Miller and once again written / d i re c t e d b y M a t t h e w Vaughn and Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass) the story reunites unlikely Kingsman special agent ‘Eggsy’ (Taron Egerton) with his pin-striped mentor (Colin Firth) heading over the Pond to meet their opposite numbers at ‘Statesman’. A spangly, A-lister cast includes Halle Berry, Channing Tatum, Mark Strong, Jeff Bridges and Elton John (!) whilst Oscar-winner Julianne Moore gets to flex her baddie muscles as Poppy, a notorious criminal mastermind, whose personal bodyguard is the inimitable Vinnie Jones. Big fun all round. All reveiws by Mark Williams

THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM (15) Set in London’s mistily realised Victorian East End, erudite detective John Kildare (Bill Nighy) faces a case he can’t crack, in a career that’s going nowhere owing to his ‘confirmed bachelor’ status. A rising music hall star, Lizzie Cree (Olivia Cooke, The Signal) is blamed for murdering her husband (Sam Reid) but Kildare suspects that he in fact was the so-called ‘Golem’ he’d long ago pursued for a series of grisly murders. Flashbacks chronicle Lizzie’s picaresque rise through the seamier habitats of showbiz, and we’re kept guessing as to exactly who did what and unto whom, with some wonderful cameos from the likes of Eddie Marsan (Their Finest) as a duplicitous stage manager, Douglas Booth (The Riot Club) and fêted Spanish actress Maria Valverde as a jealous acrobat. 14 Oct HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Martley Memorial Hall 01886 888406 16 Oct THEIR FINEST (12) Welshpool Assembly Room 01938 552043 16 Oct 20TH CENTURY WOMEN (15) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 17 Oct CHURCHILL (PG) The Royal British Legion Hall, Newport 07886 697934 17 Oct VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) The Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch 01948 660660 18 Oct I, DANIEL BLAKE (15) Chetton VH 01746 789257 18 Oct THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS (12A) Myddle VH 01939 290872 18 Oct JULIETA (15) Escleyside Hall, Michaelchurch Escley 01981 510696 19 Oct THE EAGLE HUNTRESS (U) Pudleston VH 01568 760606 19 Oct MOONLIGHT (15) SpArC Theatre, Bishop’s Castle 01588 630321 19 Oct VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) Claverley VH 01746 710528 19 Oct THEIR FINEST (12A) Gorsley VH 01989 720358 19 Oct LION (PG) Kinnerley Parish Hall 01691 682282 20 Oct LION (PG) Whitchurch & Ganarew Memorial Hall 01600 890640 20 Oct VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) Little Dewchurch VH 01432 840333 20 Oct FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (PG) Shifnal VH 01952 462787 20 Oct LA LA LAND (12A) Bosbury Parish Hall 01531 640415 20 Oct LA LA LAND (12A) Little Wenlock VH 01952 505888

BLADE RUNNER 2049 (Cert TBA) Perhaps the decade’s most anticipated film is finally here, and it’s a triumph. Ridley Scott, director of the seminal sci-fi noir returns as Blade Runner 2049’s producer alongside i t s o r i g i n a l c o - w r i t e r, Hampton Fancher, with the supremely imagi native Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Prisoners) directing. The now ageing, suitably cynical replicant hunter Deckard (reprised by Harrison Ford) is tracked down by LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling) to help confront a terrible secret that could throw an already broken society into terminal chaos. Their mission leads them to a chilling creator of ‘disposable workforces’ (Jared Leto, Suicide Squad) and other major players include Robin Wright (House of Cards) and Ana de Armas (War Dogs), but key to the film’s atmospherically stunning impact is Villeneuve’s regular British cinematographer, Roger Deakins. 26 Oct VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) Almeley VH 01544 327195 26 Oct KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE (15) Chelmarsh Parish Hall 01746 862884 27 Oct BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (2017) (PG) Marton VH 01938 580116 27 Oct THE EAGLE HUNTRESS (U) Conquest Theatre, Bromyard 01885 488575 27 Oct SULLY: MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON (12) Longden VH 07539 545846 27 Oct HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Knighton Community Centre 07751 221487 27 Oct FENCES (12) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 27 Oct LION (PG) Clungunford Parish Hall 01588 660159 28 Oct VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) Ripple Parish Hall 01684 592781 28 Oct HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Yarpole Parish Hall 01568 780279 28 Oct HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Clifton on Teme VH 01886 812238 28 Oct CHURCHILL (PG) Belmont Hall, Wellington www.theclifton.org 28 Oct THAT HAMILTON WOMAN (U) Neston Civic Hall 0151 336 7805 30 Oct BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (2017) (PG) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 31 Oct GIFTED (12A) The Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch 01948 660660

food page Old Downton Lodge, Downton-on-the-Rock

I

T HAS been observed that in recent times, the idiosyncratic Inspector Clouseaux of the Guide Michelin have turned their backs on the Marcher counties. Where once their stars clustered like Orion’s Belt around Ludlow, and the first starred gastro-pub in Britain was a short drive away near Kington, there are now none, bar the Chequers at Montgomery, and the Walnut Tree near Abergavenny (prop. Mr Shaun Hill, formerly of the Merchant House in Corve Street.)

Local gourmets have been upset, while aspiring food reviewers in the Shropshire press bemoan it. Having said this, these days Mr P couldn’t give a soggy fig for the Guide’s approval. For he knows, whatever M. Michelin and his fastidious, fusspot food gurus may think or say, that for every twenty or thirty rotten and mediocre eating establishments within the Woolly Organ’s footprint there is at least one truly good, imaginative victualler to be found; Mr P is proud to have presented several of these to readers of the Broad Sheep over the last half dozen years. And he is confident, at least hesitantly sanguine, that there may be more yet to come under his scrutiny. And it was in this spirit and his never-ending quest for these elusive eating places, that he re-visited Old Downton Lodge for the first time in a dozen years. It was impressive back then - run by Martin and Jayne Emsen, (always outstanding, formerly of the Jolly Frog, now resident at Ludlow’s Cicchetti Bar and shortly to re-open the historic Angel, just up the street as a wine bar serving, Mr P hopes, fine Chablis & oysters). Old Downton Lodge is a cluster of buildings in the hamlet of Downton-on-the-Rock, approached by an undulating lane over the curvy Herefordshire hills opposite Bringewood Chase. The restaurant and its nine rooms are housed in medieval agri-buildings with Georgian additions, which may once have been occupied by Richard Knight, the C17th iron-master who ran foundries, forges and blast furnaces a few miles downstream on the River Teme, generating a big enough pile of family wonga for his grandson to build his own fantasy dwelling that is Downton Castle. Now Downton Lodge is occupied by Willem Vlok who has worked hard to build it into an establishment with nine impressive, if slightly masculine bedrooms, along with a comfortable, commodious bar and dining room. In the long stylish bar - converted stables displaying much handsome beamery and muzzle-rubbed timber partitions - Mr Pernickety met his guests for the evening, a distinguished thespian and his lovely wife (a former London cabaret performer, reputed to have possessed the longest pair of Scotch eggs in the West End).

26

As his guests guzzled large designer gins and fever tree tonic, Mr P sipped gratefully from a glass of super-dry manzanilla sherry in a very agreeable ambiance. And while his Lovely Companion, had she been with him, might have found aesthetic holes to pick in the fabric and decoration of the place, Mr P could find none. He had earlier been told (while booking a table in an artificial name in order not to alert the management to the purpose of his visit) that he had two options - a taster menu of six courses, or of nine. In deference to his guests’ girth and his own wallet, he picked

the six, and was presented with a menu describing the six dishes being prepared that evening. The dining-room is an ancient grain store with a high, vaulted ceiling, naked stone walls, triangular air vents, hanging tapestries and more hefty beams, with iron chandeliers bearing electric bulbs which were compensated by many fat flickering wax candles around the room. Discreet classical music took the edge off the echoes among the rafters. Eight or nine tables, mostly occupied, even on a dampish Thursday in this quite remote spot, were well spaced, with vaguely, but not offensively baronial chairs around them. Any worries that wenches in mob caps would appear and try and force leathern mugs of mead on the punters were quickly dispelled. In any case a sommelier of impeccable suaveness had already told Mr P’s party that he would bring a separate small glass of wine, especially chosen to complement each of the six courses to be served. After nibbling a few mouthfuls of excellent sourdough bread, the first of chef Karl Martin’s offerings arrived. It comprised three types of tomatoes with basil and goats cheese. Beautifully presented, it was a delicate treat and an uplifting start. The next (this is quite a long list) consisted of a small chunk of good fresh plaice, with small cubes of eel, pureed pea, seaweed and lovage, which had Mr P and the Distinguished Thesp grinning happily, while the DT’s lovely wife eschewed her eel and shovelled it over to a willing Mr P. She did the same with the pigeon breasts that were the feature of the next dish, served with rye, elder, purslane (a lovely spicy herb which Mr P had not tasted before) and greengages. Mr P enjoyed it well enough but was conscious that the light cooking of the dense meat had left it a little chewy for him. It was undoubtedly as the chef intended, but was the only aspect of the six-chapter dinner to strike even a faintly negative note for Mr P (who accepted anyway that these things are a matter of personal preferences). All the party praised the next small platter of monkfish, anchovies, leeks and watercress with olive sauce. Each mouthful delivered an excitingly different burst of taste, in what, in Mr P’s view, was the very best of the four courses thus far. When Mr P had booked the table over the telephone, he had been asked if there were any ‘dietary requirements’. ‘Yes,’ he answered. ‘The food must be delicious.’ He was

happy by this stage that this requirement had been met. These were dishes light on carbohydrate that did not lie heavily in the gut, and evoked a lightness of spirit as the party reminisced about tasting menus eaten on the Orient Express, and then, not really apropos, the DT described his first appearance with the Royal Shakespeare Co as The Poisoner, in Hamlet. The DT’s wife, having recently ended a long period of abstinence from puddings of any sort, had become quite excited at the prospect of the next two dessert offerings. The first of these, raspberries with rose and white chocolate drew from her little gasp of pleasure at the lightness of the chocolate, while the final dish was even more special, a curd of meadowsweet and tonka bean with cherries - a dish of rare, subtle flavours which were a fine coda to an outstanding dinner. None of the party felt overfull or bloated, or drunk, for the suave sommelier had picked well, and the wines, some pleasingly obscure, had for the most part positively added to the dishes as promised (though Mr P must apologise for not remembering their names or the grape varieties from which they were squashed). Not surprisingly, a dinner of this standard, served perfectly in special surroundings, wasn’t cheap; the bill for the party of three, with the DT’s lovely spouse not drinking wine, just topped £320. Well worth it, Mr P felt, for an outstanding, entertaining evening. www.misterpernickety.com

The eighth Arcadia Festival will take place in Leintwardine, Kingsland, Downton and Brampton Bryan continuing its commitment to great music with an ensemble of international musicians directed by Thomas Bowes and Eleanor Alberga. This years theme is Syrinx and Harp – a French Affair, which features works by Debussy, Ravel, and Saint Saens, plus that unjustly neglected figure of French music, Albert Roussel. Beethoven features in each concert and Eleanor Alberga’s first string quartet at Kingsland. A special feature this year is the harp, and Hugh Webb will unravel the secrets of the instrument in a special event at Brampton Bryan at which Roger Nichols, world authority on French music will also bring an insight to us in a talk illustrated by the musicians of the Festival. Concerts will be in the usual surroundings of the historic 14th century Leintwardine Church, its Norman fellow church in Kingsland, and the delightful rural setting of Downton. For full details of the events go to www.arcadiamusic.org.uk Tickets are available in various packages: £15 each, £25 two concerts, £35 three, and £40 for all four events (£10 for the Brampton Bryan event on its own). grass roots Floods, climate change and Trump’s weapons of mass distraction W

HEN Donald Trump squeaked into the White House with less of the popular vote than Hillary Clinton, I wanted to focus on the policy side of his presidency, especially on what he would do on climate change, the environment, and energy. But there was a rival show in town – in the shape of infighting and chaos within the administration.

Floods in Texas

In late January, just after the inauguration, a so-called “science rebellion” was getting under way. It was to culminate in a march by thousands of boffins in Washington in April, to protest against Trump’s policies on climate and the environment. One spark for the scientists’ revolt against Trump was his deletion, within hours of his arriving in power, of all references to climate change on the White House website. Another factor was the swingeing cuts imposed by Trump on major federal science bodies. The National Institutes of Health were to face an overall budget cut 18%. The Environmental Protection Agency fared even worse. Its funding was to be hacked back by around 30%. And the man Trump appointed to head up the EPA, Scott Pruitt, spoke like a classic climate change denialist. He insisted the role of carbon dioxide in relation to global warming was not clear - a claim that directly contradicted a major report by the National Academy of Sciences. But trying to follow these events wasn’t easy when one kept being side-tracked by the epidemic of resignations and sackings that began within days Trump’s inauguration. First to go, by the end of January, was acting attorney general Sally Yates, who had stymied Trump’s attempt to ban immigration into America from seven nations with Muslim majorities. In early February, a much bigger head rolled. The hatchet-faced Michael Flynn became the shortest serving national security advisor ever, resigning for misleading the Vice President over his phone conversations with the Russian ambassador. Arguably these departures were not arranged with the sole purpose of distracting me from my environmental agenda. But when White House press secretary Sean Spicer got into his stride, it felt as though the Trump team were trying to mess with my head. Sean Spicer had insisted in his first briefing to the media that the rather thin ranks of those who came to see Trump sworn into office were the largest crowd ever to ever to witness an inauguration, a claim instantly disproved by photographic evidence. Then there was Spicer’s view, tossed casually into a media briefing, that Hitler never stooped to the use of chemical weapons. With that breath-taking howler, Spicer brought ridicule on the whole administration.

58

An even bigger distraction than Spicer was the hilarious portrayal of him on the TV show Saturday Night Live by comedian Melissa McCarthy. Although she is a) a woman and b) a foot or so shorter in height than Spicer, once you had seen her impression of his vindictive and thin-skinned performance, it became hard to get her out of your mind whenever you saw Spicer himself.

When Spicer finally resigned, in late July, it became easier to concentrate on Trump’s policies – such as pulling America out of the Paris climate agreement and reversing important measures taken by Obama to tackle climate change. Obama, in his Clean Power Plan, had blocked coal mining leases on federal land and brought in restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. He had also frozen the plan for the 1200 mile Keystone XL pipeline, which would take oil from the tar sands of Alberta to refineries in Texas. Oil from the tar sands is highly controversial because of the dire impact of the gigantic open cast mines on the landscape. It also has a much bigger carbon footprint than that of oil from conventional wells. Trump wasted little time in giving the tar sands pipeline a new lease of life. At the same time, he ditched Obama’s Clean Power Plan and opened the way for coal mining to resume on federal land. The administration is also lifting restrictions on the dumping of mining waste and other chemicals into America’s waterways. These rules were introduced as recently as 2015 and would have reduced the flow of toxic metals, such as arsenic and lead, from power stations. The 2015 measures were also aimed at curbing water pollution from fracking operations for oil and gas. And fracking companies would have been forced to disclose details of the harmful chemicals used in their operations. A coalition of environmental groups has launched a court action challenging the rollback of Obama’s environmental measures. One of the groups, the Sierra Club, said that in the case of mining and power station waste, the drinking water of millions of Americans was at stake. It said it would not stand idly by “as the Trump administration tries to steer America back to an era where…polluters dumped their waste into our water with impunity.” But, in mid-August, Trump was still engaged in undoing Obama era environmental measures. He reversed a flood protection mandate meant to ensure that all new federal buildings, roads and hospital projects must take climate change into account. In some areas this would have meant putting them on higher ground or further away from flooding threats. Within days of these defensive measures being junked, a large area of Texas was inundated as Hurricane Harvey struck.

Keeping track of the struggle between Trump and the sensible use of science hasn’t been easy when he and his team are so adept at fogging our minds. The president has proved highly skilled at deploying his so-called “weapons of mass distraction.” Although this pun was first used by a New York congressman in 2004, it might have been coined for Trump. High on the list of distractions have been Reince Priebus, Anthony Scaramucci, Steve Bannon and several other top White House players who have been made to fall on their swords. It would be easy to write off Trump and his motley crew as buffoons who are no more effective than the Keystone Cops. But while it may be tempting to see them as a comedy act and become mesmerised by their antics, we may well find they have done massive damage to their country, as well as the planet, long before Trump’s first term is out.
