Are you ready to rock? I

HATE playing at weddings. The chances are that you have been booked by the bride’s brother-in-law who likes you, but it’s a pretty good bet that 99% of the diverse bunch of people that you get at weddings would rather have an Abba cover band. Admittedly, they will probably all be tipsy by the time it comes to play but that just means that Uncle Henry will be extremely persistant in his demands that you play Mustang Sally “You don’t play Mustang Sally?” “What do you mean, everyone plays Mustang Sally!” “Here, give me your guitar, I’ll play the bloody thing”. The same sort of thing can be true at other event gigs. By that I mean gigs that are not primarily music events, but are meetings of railway enthusiasts or annual firm parties or political meetings. i.e. They do not come to see the band but are there for some other purpose. I used to run gigs on the Saturday nights of the ‘Tour de Presteigne’ electric bike rally. I pondered long and hard about what sort of music electric bike enthusiasts might enjoy, but never really cracked it. Although we all had our love of electric bikes in common we probably had nothing else. In actual fact the electric bike mob were quite a tricky lot and despite its slightly green eco-air, some of the people I had to deal with were downright unpleasant! I seem to remember minor fracas going on at Radnorshire Arms and at the Workhouse I eventually stopped doing it when I got threatened by The Kalkhoff crew who were really nasty. I was later sent a link to a You Tube video of the guy who rode their bikes in the Tour de Presteigne races and, would you believe it, he turned out to be a cage fighter and the film was of him pummelling somebody’s face with his bare fists! Anyway what I was leading up to was the fact that last week we were booked to play at the Moto Guzzi Owner’s Club annual bash. The story that immediately came to mind was told to me by my friend Ian Marchant, (don’t forget to buy a copy of his latest book ‘A Hero for High Times’). He and his sidekick the late lamented Chas Ambler were booked to be the musical comedy act at a big biker’s rally north of Shrewsbury. Ian, who doesn’t like bikers, strode onto the stage and in the approved manner shouted three times to the audience ‘Are you ready to rock?’ They then played a very mild mannered version of ‘The Girl from Ipanema!’ The bikers were not amused. After their second song, the organiser came onto the stage and told Ian ‘If you aren’t out of here in the next five minutes those blokes over there are going to come and beat you to a pulp with their chains’. “I said play Mustang Sally”

Surprisingly the Moto Guzzi owners seemed a really nice bunch and didn’t seem in the least inclined to beat us to a pulp with chains. That might be because their bikes were shaft drive and didn’t have any chains, but no, they applauded the band and the organiser even suggested we might come back next year! So that was a turn up for the books. Perhaps my prejudices are all wrong and it’s simply a matter of matching the band to the organisation. Hang on, an email has just popped up on my computor. Would we like to play at next year’s cage fighting convention? What the hell! Okay, bring it on.

Keep Calm and Keep Worrying U NSETTLING times, don’t you think? - what with the tedious diet of Brexit for breakfast, dinner and tea [n.b. Broadsheep readers from southern England should read ‘breakfast, lunch and dinner’, or possibly ‘supper’] not to mention deranged shenanigans over the pond in Trumptown. With so much to worry about a body could be excused for not knowing where to start. But ‘Hold on’, I hear you ask, ‘is it EVER worth worrying at all?’

According to my mother there are few things in this life - very few, in her opinion - that are worth worrying about. She used to say this whenever she saw me in the grip of yet another bout of existential angst. Hoping for further enlightenment I would ask her what these things were. Her reply was as simple as it was annoying - ‘That’s for you to discover’. As a young man I worried quite a lot, but with age came the gradual realization that in fact I was not worrying nearly enough. Fortunately on the rare occasions when jollity intervened another example of my mother’s gnomic wisdom usually helped to get my fretting back into gear. ‘Remember’, she would say, ‘things are never so bad that they can’t get a little bit worse’. Oh yes, I could give masterclasses in fretting and as a result of years of immersion in 19th and 20th century philosophy, especially continental existentialism, am now able to be gloomy in several European languages. It’s said you can tell a great deal about someone’s character from the books they read, the clothes they wear, the type of car they drive, or the size of their second home in France. Maybe. But I reckon a much more reliable barometer is to find out what they worry about; or even more revealing, what they DON’T. A student of mine once told me that she always tried to have six things to fret over. Not more than six, but never fewer. Her reasoning was that as soon as she got fed up with one item she could move on to another. More than six became too stressful but with fewer than six she had too little room to manoeuvre. For my money, dear readers, six is nowhere, absolutely nowhere, near enough. Heavens, I can worry about six before breakfast! But is there any point in worrying? Does it actually achieve anything? A recurring worry of a close friend is

the apocalyptic vision of a powerful but clearly demented world leader with his finger hovering excitedly over the nuclear button, while wondering if pressing the button might not only teach his enemies a thing or two but also usher in world peace [more likely the last trump?]. Of course, no amount of fretting on my friend’s part will make an iota of difference. He is powerless to change anything. By the same token, having sleepless nights fretting about Brexit, or the precarious plight of countless refugees across the world, is a waste of energy. Unless it makes a difference. Unless it can change things, what’s the point? Maybe the song got it right: ‘What’s the use of worrying? It never was worthwhile. So, pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag, and smile, smile, smile.’ No! That simply will not do at all. A worry-free life seems, ironically, something to - well, worry about. Worrying is a vital part of the human condition, which is why any decent philosophical discussion about worrying soon gets us into deep waters. But perhaps a more practical and less negative-sounding phrase is needed - e.g.‘to be concerned about’. We worry about what concerns us, what matters to us. Even - dare we say it? - what matters most. That, by the way, is a humdinger of a question for philosophers to ask: what matters to you more than anything else? Mind you, I’ve encountered some pretty odd answers to that question. You run this risk if you mix with academics. For instance, there’s the colleague who told me that his chief worry was the future of a particular species of African dung beetle. OK, he WAS the world authority in that field, but you do have to wonder if he needed to get out more. Or perhaps less. The thing about worrying is that it’s a double-edged affair: it can either galvanize you into decisive action or else leave you unable to think straight, let alone do something to make a difference. And, of course, obsessive worrying can be seriously destructive. Philosophers get terribly excited about worrying, and for good reason: it’s a topic that brings you into contact with crucial issues, such as sorting out what matters most to you, what difference you can make, and the all-important notion of community. cinema THE CHILDREN ACT (15) Already a worthy double Oscar w i n n e r ( H o w a r d ’s End, Sense and Sensibility), Emma T h o m p s o n ’ s performance as a workaholic high court judge in Ian McEwan’s adaptation of his own eponymous novel is arguably a career best. Oblivious to the dire state of her marriage to laconic college lecturer Stanley Tucci, Thompson’s Fiona Maye is confronted by hubby’s announcement that he’s about to embark on a fling with the inevitable younger colleague, just as she’s taken on a morally impossible case concerning the separation of conjoined twins. But things get worse, ethically and otherwise, when she has to rule on the rights of Jehovah’s Witness parents whose religion forbids them to allow their cancer-ridden son (Fionn Whitehead) a life-saving blood transfusion. BLACKkKLANSMAN (15) Although best known for works championing racial equality such as Do The Right Thing and He Got Game, Spike Lee has also made sharp thrillers like Inside Man and Oldboy but here he manages to combine both a hefty l a d l i n g o f c o m e d y. Wise-cracking Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) insinuates himself into a reluctant Colorado Springs police department and thence and improbably into the Ku Klux Klan’s inner circle in an effort to discredit and ultimately arrest its leader, David Duke. As an afro-sporting black man, this takes some chutzpah and requires an equally unlikely partnership with a Jewish officer, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) who represents him in face-to-face encounters with the Klan. JOURNEY’S END (12A) Film Society Corner makes a brief reprise in deference to the excellent Shropshire WW1 Film Fest which includes this fourth film version of R.C. Sheriff’s 1928 stage play by Suite Francais director, Saul Dibb. The folly of wars waged by deluded politicians and fought quite literally by cannon fodder stars Hunger Games’ Sam Claflin as Capt. Stanhope, driven to despair and drink in charge of his trench-bound troops who include a philosophical schoolteacher, (Paul Bettany, Margin Call), young newcomer Lt. Raleigh (Asa Butterfield, Hugo) whose eager innocence quickly falls victim to shoddy reality and Toby Jones as the determinedly cheerful cook. The muddy claustrophobia and dubious sense of purpose are much aided by cinematographer Laurie Rose (Peaky Blinders) and re-invigorated by writer Simon Reade, Sherriff’s original script has lost none of its bite which this ensemble cast deploy with both verve and sensitivity.

ESPITE suffering from a severe pain in the heel, Mr Pernickety hobbled up from the free parking to the castle several times last weekend to do his duty at the Ludlow Food Festival. He continues to feel that this event could do a lot more to involve the whole town, in the way it is done in Abergavenny, but there appears to be a pressing need to contain most of it in the castle leaving it a somewhat limp affair outside. There were, of course, a number of exhibitors whom Mr P enjoyed and he also had the opportunity to catch up with one of the principal Beefy Boys who was there. They discussed an irritating new directive from the Food Standards Agency [FSA] that prohibits the selling of hamburgers that are not overcooked. The Beefy Boys produce the best burgers in the country, if not the world, and naturally they want to serve them in the most delicious way possible, which means leaving the ground beef a little (even lot) pink in the middle, the way any discerning eater would want it. Last time Mr P ate in the BB’s Hereford restaurant he found a flyer attached to the menu, explaining why they were no longer able to serve their burgers the way they wanted. Their burgers are still delicious, but regrettably, because of this overzealous directive, less so than they might have been. Mr P supposes that one must accept that the FSA has a duty to discourage death by consuming food that poses an (albeit very slight) risk of containing harmful bacteria. However, as far as Mr P is aware, instances of death by burger are very rare, if not non-existent. As with many of this agency’s rulings, it would be more helpful if they restricted themselves simply to pointing out the miniscule risk in eating pink meat while letting consumers decide for themselves if they wish to take that risk, rather than banning it outright. After all there are many activities that pose higher risks to health which are not banned – Cocacola, for example, doner kebabs from rusty vans, or oysters, pot noodles, reading the Sun Newspaper and watching Big Brother.

At the fair, Mr P also tasted two ciders which he hadn’t done previously – Pip’s Dry, which was outstanding and clearly made with knowledge and love, and Gillows, which clearly wasn’t. In general, the cidermakers of the Marches have come on mightily over the last twenty-five years, and this was shown in a dramatic way by the opening of Dunkerton’s new cider mill in Charlton Kings on the far side of Cheltenham. Having been started by the later Ivor Dunkerton and his wife, Susie, some three decades ago in an outrageously picturesque corner of west Herefordshire (still the home of the excellent Cider Barn Restaurant) his son, Julian has taken it on, and is determined to bring this fine product to the attention of as great a public as possible. Mr P and his taste buds were delighted to find that all the products in the entirely organic range show no compromise in standards as a result of the increased production levels. There are, Mr P has discovered, many occasions when a fine cider more than happily replaces wine as an accompaniment to a number of different foods – a Dunkertons Court Royal with a roast loin of Middle White Pork, for example.

To drink with the mutton curry Mr P had ordered at the Chai Shop in Bishop’s Castle (the subject of this month’s review), which doesn’t have a booze licence, Mr P slipped over the street to the New Deli (no Indian connection) to buy a bottle of Three Tuns Cleric’s Cure (brewed a few hundred yards up the road). Mr P and his lovely companion always enjoy a visit to BC with its wacky painted houses and flaky shops, reflecting its former days as a hippy outpost in the 1970s, where whiffs of patchouli oil and ganja might be expected to waft through the streets. Sadly, they don’t, but there remains an engaging alternativeness to the place, which distinguishes it from its neighbouring, distinctive Marcher towns. The Chai Shop, set up five years ago by a charmingly garrulous and industrious woman called Tara, carries on this alternative tradition. A tiny place with three or four tables, walls covered in pictures, and cluttered shelves full of magazines and books, it serves tea and cakes and whatnot, as well as spicy chai and freshly made curries, samosas, onion bargees and chutneys. Tara doesn’t set out to serve gastro-curries, although Mr P would describe the one he ate as good and honest, containing mutton reared by Mr Pugh the butcher’s brother in the lovely hills around Bishop’s Castle. The LC, a long-standing aficionada of Asian food, munched her samosas and medley of veggie curries with a contented grin, and contained her impatience as Mr P, who suffers from chronic verbal overload, enjoyed a lengthy and wide-ranging chat with Tara as she cooked in the back half of her small premises; to Mr P, the ambience of the place was a rare delight, especially added to a lovely curry at a tenner a head. www.misterpernickety.com

NE of the great bonuses of living in the Welsh Marches is that so many well-known classical musicians live here or have family connections to the area. Sooner or later most of them succumb to the temptation to set up a festival on their doorstep. Who can blame them, if their working lives consist mainly of negotiating the winding, pothole-strewn roads of Herefordshire en route to a motorway that will take them to concerts or recording studios in London, Birmingham or Manchester? Eleanor Alberga & Thomas Bowes

Composer Eleanor Alberga and her violinist husband Thomas Bowes founded the Arcadia Festival in 2010 on the Downton Castle estate near Ludlow, where they live in the cottage to which Richard Payne Knight, the builder of the castle, retired in the 1790s. The name of the festival comes from the untamed, naturalistic landscapes that Knight preferred to the neat parklands of Capability Brown. St Giles Church, where the final concert of this year’s festival will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 7 October, is surrounded by just such a wooded landscape, in the middle of a field out of sight of any other buildings. Arcadia 2018 is focused on the music of J S Bach, and with eleven musicians taking part, Tom and Eleanor aim to cover a wide range of the composer’s vast output and to provide a meaningful portrait of his times, outlook and personality. There is instrumental music, religious music and one of the great musical puzzles, ‘A Musical Offering’, written towards the end of Bach’s life, which will be explored in an illustrated lecture at the Assembly Rooms, Ludlow, on Saturday afternoon and performed in Downton Church on Sunday.

The centrepiece of the festival is a recital by Tom and pianist Joanna MacGregor in St Laurence’s Church, Ludlow. Tom will play Bach’s great Chaconne for solo violin, preceded by Eleanor’s companion piece ‘Oh! Chaconne’. Joanna will also begin with a solo work by Eleanor, ‘It’s Time’, as a prelude to another masterwork by Bach, his Goldberg Variations. The concert will showcase St Laurence’s new Festival Steinway piano and will provide an interesting contrast in performance styles for anyone who heard the recent performance of the Goldberg Variations on the harpsichord by Mahan Esfahani at the Hereford Three Choirs Festival. Unique to Arcadia are its free taster events at the Sun Inn, Leintwardine, where you can meet some of the musicians and hear examples of the music to be performed in the more formal concerts. This year’s is on Thursday 4 October at 7.30 pm.

Brecon Baroque

Another violinist, Rachel Podger, not only directs the Brecon Baroque Festival in her home town, but founded her own period-instrument orchestra, also called Brecon Baroque, to go with it. The orchestra gives its own concerts with guest soloists and ensembles during the festival weekend, and runs education projects that give conservatoire students and members of the South Powys Youth Orchestra the chance to perform alongside professional players. Young musicians are also among the performers at the pop-up Festival Cafe in The Muse on Brecon’s Glamorgan Street, gaining valuable performance experience in a friendly and informal environment; and young professionals give lunchtime recitals within the festival. Brecon may also be the only festival that includes a Baroque Tea Dance, a popular annual event that is preceded by a workshop where the mysteries of this arcane art form are unlocked. This year’s Brecon Baroque Festival takes place 19 – 22 October and opens with a concert by Rachel Podger and the vocal consort Voces8, making their festival debut. The ravishing programme interweaves music for violin with choral masterpieces by composers including Thomas Tallis, J. S. Bach, Heinrich von Biber, Nicola Matteis and a new work by Owain Park. The repertoire is linked by the theme of angels, which runs throughout the weekend and includes references to a few ‘fallen’ angels as well as the more virtuous ones evoked by works such as J S Bach’s double violin concerto, with its exquisite central slow movement, which Rachel and Johannes Pramsohler will perform on the Saturday evening in the canalside Theatr Brycheiniog. And look out for another chamber music festival making its debut in November. Clun Valley Music Festival is the brainchild of yet another violinist, Richard Tunnicliffe, who grew up in Clun though he now lives in London and works all over the world. ‘Voices from Darkness’ takes place 9-11 November and will explore music of the first world war period, from both sides of the English Channel, by composers such as Ravel, Vaughan Williams and George Butterworth, who died on the Somme in 1916. T is 30 years since a British prime minister first called attention to the threat posed by global warming. On 27th September 1988 Margaret Thatcher highlighted the huge growth in the world’s population in her lifetime and the headlong rise in the use of fossil fuels. She told the Royal Society that it was possible that “we have unwittingly begun a massive experiment with the system of this planet itself.” Thatcher locked onto the issue of climate change following several years of advice on the environment from a man who had reputedly become her favourite diplomat, Sir Crispin Tickell. He was then about to retire from the Foreign Office, but, since 1984, Tickell had seized any opportunity to discuss environmental issues with the prime minister.

found myself by chance sitting with Sir Crispin Tickell on a bench in the garden of Green College, Oxford, where he had recently become warden.

He had more than once visited Downing Street for that very purpose while on leave in Britain from foreign postings. Tickell had found in Mrs Thatcher an eager listener. Thatcher, who had gained a chemistry degree at Oxford, found it easy to understand the “greenhouse effect”. She prided herself on being the only scientist in her government.

I was interviewing him for Newsnight. I am not sure whether the interview made it to air, because, by the time we got back to the office, the BBC news machine was focused on the invasion of Kuwait, and I was soon being dispatched to a course on how to survive biological and chemical warfare, in preparation for a long trip to the Middle East.

Sir Crispin Tickell, was, in his early career, not a climate scientist, and indeed not a scientist at all. He had read history at Oxford. He did however have links to one of Britain’s best known scientific families. His mother was a descendant of the 19th century biologist Thomas Henry Huxley, who was in turn a friend of John Tyndall, a glaciologist and a towering figure in the history of climate science.

Before meeting Tickell, I knew almost nothing about climate change. But his cool and dispassionate exposition of the threat posed by global warming left me with a lasting interest in the subject which has only intensified as the years have gone by. He surely played a key role in the events which led to Britain becoming a leading country in the war to curb climate change and passing, under Labour in 2008, a unique climate act to impose a duty on energy ministers to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050.

As for Tickell, back in the 1960s, in his early years with the FO, he manned a desk which dealt with Antarctica. And when he got the chance of a mid-career sabbatical he chose to go to Harvard for a year to study global warming. At a time when, in my memory, very little was being reported about global warming in the mainstream media, Tickell, in 1977, described in his book “The causes of Climate Change”, the relentless rise of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere since the mid-19th century. By then, he said, carbon dioxide was at a level of over 270 parts per million, “increasing to 290 ppm between 1880 and 1890. “Thereafter its rise has continued to be steep. Up to 314 ppm in 1958…to over 340ppm in 1983, and still rising fast.” And, he wrote, “The increase is almost certainly due to the accelerating consumption of fossil fuels and the destruction of forests.”

During the 1980s I was unaware of Tickell’s role in calling attention to climate change. As a BBC reporter, I was rather busy in late 1989 and early 1990, covering the disintegration of communism in Eastern Europe. But when things quietened in the summer of 1990 I

Reading that speech today, you might easily think it had been made by a campaigner from Friends of the Earth or Greenpeace. “What we are now doing to the world, by degrading the land surfaces, by polluting the waters, and by adding greenhouse gases at an unprecedented rate – all this is new in the experience of the earth. It is mankind and his activities which are changing the environment of our planet in damaging and dangerous ways.” Some doubters and denialists in the Tory party later tried to suggest that Mrs Thatcher’s speech had been an aberration. However, she and Sir Crispin Tickell remained in touch for at least another ten years. And that 1989 UN speech remains a high point in conservative environment policy, even if Tory leaders since then have often failed to live up to it. Julian O’Halloran
