Dear Broad Sheep Reader P

LEASE fill in the following questionnaire which will enable us to continue to provide you with the best free What’s On Magazine in Herefordshire and The Borders. It’s only going to take a few minutes and anyway what else would you be doing with your time probably either staring into space or fiddling around with that bloody phone! Thank you.

Broad Sheep Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire

Please make sure you only tick one box for every question otherwise your questionnaire will be invalidated. 1.How to you get your copy of the magazine? a. I am waiting outside the T.I.C every morning for the last 10 days of the month quivering with anticipation. □ b. I work at Print Plus and just nick one off the print machine. □ c. I might read it in the Weobley Dentist waiting room if I happen to have toothache. □ 2. Are you satisfied with the page 3 editorials? a. No. It should be always be about Brexit, Brexit, Brexit like every other newspaper worth its salt. □ b. I never read it, I just go straight to the dog cartoons, although I wish they were about cats, which in my opinion are 10 times more funny than dogs, just look at the views on YouTube. □ c. I think whoever writes them is a person of great vision, compassion and one of the great thinkers of our time. (Note to Ed. Clare can you please leave this bit in only edit out the bit in brackets). □ 3. What new page or subject would improve the magazine? a. A Brexit page that could go on and on for years about restoring the UK to its former glory as a great nation and a world leader. □ b. A page about changing the exhaust pipes on a 1983 Ford Escort with easy to follow photos. □ c. A knitting page possibly including some interesting crochet work. □

4. What would you change about Mr Pernickity? a. He should stop talking about the restaurants colour scheme and soft furnishings and concentrate on the bloody food. □ b. He could be the new Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, He should give up writing and become a world renowned interior designer. □ c. In the words of one Herefordshire publican “ If he comes in my place he won’t get out alive”. □

5. Do the Music listings adequately cover your preferred style of music? a. I love the fact that you support the local live music scene and are happy to give equal billing to some teenage hopefuls just starting out at their first gig alongside visiting American Legends and International Folk superstars. □ b. Unless it’s Grime or Drill I don’t give a toss, Broad Sheep is dead and what’s with the paper? Get online or get outta my face losers. □ c. Why does it all have to about Art and Music and all that posh stuff? We need more info on Sheep Dog trials, Moto-Cross races and most importantly Car Boot Sales. □

6. Have the Band Directory and The Complementary Medicine Directories proved useful? a. I booked a Rolling Stones cover band for our wedding and the lead singer, who didn’t look at all like Mick Jagger had relations with my ‘bride to be’ in the conveniences. This cast a black cloud over the rest of the evening and we are still coming to terms with the whole situation although it must be said the personal counselling and massage therapies have been helpful - the homeopathy not so much. □ b. Yes. □ c. No. □ 7. What do you do with Broad Sheep after you have read it? a. Chop it up in the Magimix dilute it with a little recycled, waste water, press it into bricks and use it as a starter for our solid fuel pellet boiler. □ b. Hide it in the pile of out of date sailing magazines at the Doctor’s surgery. □ c. Display it in a gold painted frame alongside my complete collection of all the Broad Sheep covers from 1992 to the present day (and yes I am talking to you Ricky!). □

Thank you for completing this survey. Without your very valuable input Broad Sheep would not be able to continue to learn and grow alongside the community it serves and would just carry on the way it always has …. ermm just like it always has … ermm … although there is something to be said for continuity… ermmm…. now where did you put those questionnaires? More Mediocrity T

HE future of Hereford’s much-vaunted city bypass (aka the Western Relief Road) still hangs in the balance. Under the Tory administration it would have been a shoe-in. But with the Herefordshire Alliance’s wellorchestrated seizure of power last May the road might well be abandoned, despite Plough Lane’s scare-mongering tactics, suggesting that £10-million would be wasted on aborted design fees. As the late Mandy Rice Davies might have observed: “They would say that, wouldn’t they?” So now the indie coalition has decided to hold a series of ‘market town consultations’ over the summer and autumn. If the bypass is scrapped, the biggest losers will be the volume housebuilders holding options on the agricultural land adjoining the route (the dear old money-grabbing Church of England is said to be one of the local landowners with most to lose). A ‘no bypass’ decision would see the county’s housing programme capped at 3,000 units. Last March, the public consultation document for the council’s Hereford Transport Package suggested that, if built, the bypass could provide space for up to 6,500 new housing units, nearly all on green field sites abutting the new road. Would they be cutting-edge and contemporary, worthy of architectural awards and destined to be featured on Grand Designs? Does Donald Trump tweet joined-up sentences? More mediocrity, I fear. A paradigm of what we can expect is Bloor Homes’ Hereford Point development on the Roman Road, north of the city, where a sprawling estate of 465 housing units, is due for completion by 2024. All are conventional – almost dated - in appearance and feature traditional construction techniques. By contrast, the county’s premier timber-framed housing specialist Border Oak says that around 60 per cent of the components used its homes are produced in its Kingsland factory. This summer Worthing Borough Council announced that it was considering a partnership deal with Scandinavian contractor SKANSKA’s construction arm BoKlock (part of the IKEA group) to develop an estate of 200 factory-built affordable starter homes. BoKlock says that after initial site preparations, a single housing unit usually takes less than one working week to erect. Over 10,000 have already been built in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The Worthing components will be prefabricated at a factory in Estonia. Needless to say, all the new homes will have fully-fitted IKEA kitchens.

6

Prefabrication is nothing new. Back in the 1960s, industrialised building was all the rage, with the UK’s major construction groups jumping on the bandwagon. Most featured factory-made storey-height concrete panels. Modern Movement devotees fell in love with system building because it underscored the Bauhaus ethic of mechanization. Few of the resulting housing estates – with the possible exceptions of the GLC’s Brutalist Trellick Tower and Park Hill, Sheffield - had any architectural merit. Gullible councilors and municipal housing officials were no match for the big contractors’ snake oil salesmen and ugly highrise towers soon began sprouting like concrete mushrooms.

Caption: Waterside housing. If ESG hadn’t lost its nerve, Hereford could have had an urban community like this. [Photo: Urban Splash] Until the Ronan Point disaster in 1968. Four died and 17 were injured, following a gas explosion in a 22-storey system-built tower block in London’s Canning Town. The entire estate of over 900 homes was eventually demolished, to be replaced by low-rise housing. In the same way that the words ‘Grenfell Tower’ will forever be linked to the perfidy of cladding residential towers with inflammable panels, so the words ‘Ronan Point’ will always be associated with the get-rich-quick industrialised building bonanza. Perhaps the closest the county ever came to producing attractive state-of-the-art housing design was back in 2007, when ESG (Herefordshire Council’s short-lived development company, set up to build the Old Market shopping centre) commissioned the London architectural practice CZWG to prepare a feasibility study for an 8.6 acre brown field site at the extreme north end of the ESG site (roughly where the new Premier Inn is now going up, adjacent to the old Merton Meadow car park). As well as providing over 1000 housing units, the Post Modernist pioneers proposed cycle routes, communal play spaces, traffic-free areas with underground car parks, shops, a residents’ community centre and a canal-like water feature, which was to be created by realigning the old Widemarsh Brook. In other words, a proper urban community. Perhaps most prescient of CZWG’s ideas was for a formal civic square to be created in front of the city’s Grade II listed railway station. Sadly, the scheme never got off the ground, the waterside housing never happened and the space earmarked for that civic square is now the site of the unlovely Hereford Medical Centre. An ambitious West Midlands canalside housing scheme which has got off the ground is Urban Splash’s recently-launched Port Loop development, west of Birmingham city centre. The urban renaissance of this 43-acre site is adjacent to the 18th century Birmingham-Wolverhampton canal, and will eventually comprise over 1000 housing units, many affordable and all featuring a high level of off-site prefabrication. A similar approach was used in Manchester, North Shields and Salford. One of the first phases at Port Loop is being overseen by Glen Howells Architects. Twenty years ago, it was the design of the young Glen Howells which won the competition for Hereford’s Courtyard Arts Centre. Nick Jones

cinema PAIN & GLORY (15) This thinly veiled memoir of Spanish auteur Pedro Almadovar’s film-making passion becalmed by both illness and ennui will appeal strongly to his fans but also to anyone keen to see two of Spain’s biggest stars on top of their game. A grizzled Antonio Banderas (I’M SO EXCITED!) plays the Almadovar doppelganger, Salvador, and almost reprising her role in VOLVER, Penelope Cruz his mother when he was a young boy and yes, there’s a lot of flashback here – a favourite Almadovar device – which sometimes gets a tad confusing. And fans of the director’s 20 strong back-catalogue may see the final twist coming a long way off, but none the worse for that. The backbone of his typically brashly coloured film are, as ever, complex relationships, notably between Salvador and Alberto (Asier Etxeandia), a fractious actor he cast out decades ago, but also a tender reunion with a long-forgotten lover (Leonardo Sbaraglia). 20 FEET FROM STARDOM (12) Rarely shown h e r e a b o u t s except for an upcoming outing at The Hive, noted music documentarian Morgan Neville’s 2014 film loving ly salutes those unacknowledged but certainly not unsung heroines of the music business – the back-up singers. Neville combines extensive interviews with the stars whose careers wouldn’t have succeeded without them – consider the Stones’ Gimme Shelter or David Bowie’s Young Americans – with profiles of some of the greatest, most enduring talents, including Merry Clayton, Darlene Love and the drop-dead gorgeous Claudia Lennear. But revealing as they are, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM’s finest moments spring from the archives: studio and concert performances from present day Bruce Springsteen and Sting, going back to Ike & Tina Turner’s Ikettes and Phil Spector’s Crystals (in reality, Darlene Love and The Blossoms). Wonderful characters, in most cases philosophically resigned to the sidelines, fantastic voices and overall a marvellously uplifting movie no true music fan should miss. 25 Oct THE SISTERS BROTHERS (15) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 25 Oct GREEN BOOK (12A) Whitchurch & Ganarew Memorial Hall 01600 890640 25 Oct COLETTE (15) All Stretton VH 07812 583113 25 Oct MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (15) Stoke Prior VH 07850 030821 25 Oct THAT GOOD NIGHT (12A) Colwall VH 01684 540926 26 Oct ALL IS TRUE (12A) Cawley Hall, Eye 01568 615836 26 Oct GREEN BOOK (12A) Upton upon Severn Memorial Hall 01684 592273 26 Oct TOY STORY 4 (U) Leintwardine Community Centre 07572 442903 26 Oct TOY STORY 4 (U) Dolau Community Hall 07904 883038 26 Oct A PRIVATE WAR (15) Aston on Clun VH 01588 660545 26 Oct THE KEEPER (15) Withington Parish Room 01743 709236 26 Oct ROCKETMAN (15) Clifton on Teme VH 01886 812238 27 Oct THE FAVOURITE (15) New Inn, Pembridge 01544 387571 28 Oct TOY STORY 4 (U) Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, Craven Arms 01588 676060 28 Oct THE WHITE CROW (12A) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 30 Oct TOY STORY 4 (U) Lindridge Parish Hall 01584 881615 31 Oct FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS (12A) Goodrich VH 01600 890609 4 Nov HAPPY AS LAZZORO (12A) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911

THE MUSTANG (15) Unashamedly re-working her 2014 short, RABBIT in which a female prisoner is given the titular bunny as therapy, Laure De ClementTonnerre here employs that mythological animal of the American West as a means of rehabilitating violent offender Roman (Matthias Schoenaerts, THE DROP, A BIGGER SPLASH) incarcerated in a bleak Nevada jail. Prison psychologist (Connie Britton, AMERICAN ULTRA) frustrated by his monosyballic truculence, refers Roman to a scheme whereby heavily supervised prisoners must break the wild horses rounded up to ensure sustainable numbers. As he gradually bonds with one of the wildest horses, Marquis, his relationships both with other inmates he’d previously alienated and most notably, his estranged daughter (Gideon Adlon, BLOCKERS), Roman opens up and eventually softens. Schoenaerts give a performance of restrained power only slightly more impressive than an incredibly sprightly 83 year-old Bruce Dern (NEBRASKA) who plays the no-nonsense boss of the equine training programme.

Wildwood, Ludlow (Hereford, Worcester, Telford & all over the place)

T

HE last time Mr Pernickety reviewed a restaurant in the site now occupied by Wildwood it was called De Greys – a consciously old-fashioned Tea Room, where scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream were served by young local women wearing little black dresses, white aprons and cotton mob caps. Mr P reviewed it in his 2009 Guide to Eating in Ludlow and enjoyed its dated quirkiness. He regrets that the then proprietors didn’t have the courage, or skill to carry on offering that kind of thing, especially in the historic timber-framed building whose shop window is set beneath a jettied front at the top of the outstandingly handsome Broad Street. It had become clear that the owners hadn’t just mislaid the plot but had abandoned it completely when Mr P came in for a cup of tea to find the space filled with the raucous and unrestful sound of Mr Ozzy Osbourne’s Black Sabbath. The combination of this and the black and white clad waitresses skuttling about with teapots and sugar bowls made the worst example of ill-chosen restaurant music Mr P had ever encountered. He was disappointed, but not at all surprised when the old de Greys, a unique and appropriate establishment for Ludlow, had packed up. The premises were snapped up by a chain of restaurants called Wildwood. ‘Wildwood’ suggests a dark mysterious place where mythical creatures, unicorns, Robin Hood as well as wolves and bears might lurk among impenetrable undergrowth beneath stately oaks. Sadly, there is little sense of adventure to be found within the chain of restaurants marketed under that name. The whole set up is altogether too boringly, blandly familiar and, apart from its name, indistinguishable from a dozen other similar chains, like Zizzi, Bella Italia, Prezzo, Ask, Jamie’s Italian – all thinking they’re a little hip, Usually with a faint hint of Italian – offering a stock range of punningly-named pizzas and burgers, with a few centrally prepared rotating ‘specials’. These places have all been chasing the same undiscerning punters, deemed easy pickings by the hedge-funds that back them and now there are just too many. There’s a long, depressing alley of them in Hereford’s New Market development, though it seems unlikely they will all survive. In Ludlow there are mercifully few chains, represented by just Costa, a dull, underperforming branch of Pizza Express, and the even more underperforming Wildwood. These places do not prosper in a town which relishes its own independence and where the inhabitants are unusually food-savvy. Mr P had once dined at the Ludlow Wildwood with a gathering of thespians and had been struck by how unpalatable his Penne Arrabiata was, so it was in a spirit of gloomy foreboding that he walked into the restaurant last week to make a formal assessment of it for the readers of the Woolly Organ.

24

Depressingly, the once charming Elizabethan interior has been thoroughly blandified, now housing a sea of empty, quasi-rustic tables and very little else to engage the senses in any way.

Mr P had his pick of the unoccupied seats, and sat down to peruse the predictable menu. Service, at least, was quick and friendly. Mr Pernickety chose one of the more expensive wines by the glass, as past experience had shown him that the bottom of the range of house wines in these places usually tastes as if it’s been transported in a petrol tanker. The Argentinian Malbec at £5.90 the 175 cl glass was enjoyable but, as always, hideously overpriced, representing £25 for a bottle which could have been bought at Aldi for around £6.99. Tap water came in a jug without being asked for, which Mr P appreciates, His first course of Bruschetta was a slice of soggy toasted baguette beneath a blob of unrecently mashed avocado, some cherry tomatoes a token piece of cheese that may have been mozzarella, for around six quid. For his main dish he’d ordered lasagne. This looked to Mr P, and subsequently tasted as if it had not originated on the premises and had just been brought back to life in a microwave oven. This process doesn’t necessarily render a dish inedible, and although its construction was inauthentic giving the impression of an Italian recipe modified for English palates, it was fit for human consumption and not as off-target as the pasta dish he’d had on his previous visit. Mr P’s choice of pudding, though, was a bit of a disaster – a tiramisu that had been industrially prepared and still retained a little hard frost at its core. Mr P had a similarly disappointing version if this classic Italian dessert at Pizza Express and he wondered why chain restaurants like this even attempted such a dish – it’s never going to work, especially for Ludlovians who can enjoy the real, magnificent thing for about the same price, just down the road at the Cicchetti Bar (if the proprietor allows then in). Mr P paid his £30 bill feeling a little cheated, and wondering why the owners of Wildwood ever thought there was any reason for anyone in Ludlow to chose to eat factory made food in such uninspiring surroundings when the town already contains so many genuine, individually run eating places, several of which offer outstanding eating experiences often for less money. The only positive qualities Mr P could discern in Wildwood were the service and the choice of music – mercifully no longer provided by Ozzy Osbourne. Mr Pernickety

grass roots “We’re not cutting emissions. And we don’t care!” say UK farmers. O

KAY! I’ll put my hands up. I am immediately guilty of a gross distortion, and an unfair allegation against many responsible farmers. I should have attributed that “don’t care” attitude to just under half of UK farmers, rather than to farmers in general.

Dr Jim Skea

However, the real facts, contained in a report last November, are shocking enough. The revelations came from the Committee on Climate Change, an official expert body set up more than ten years ago, with the almost unanimous backing of the House of Commons. The first key message from the committee, in their 2018 document, was that cost-effective reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were not being delivered across the whole canvas of farming, forestry and land management. The report said that in 2017, “44% of farmers took no action to reduce GHG emissions and half of farmers did not think it was important to consider emissions when making decisions about farming practices.” Back in 1990, the base year for efforts to curb climate change, greenhouse gases emitted by farming were just 7% of all emissions in the UK. But today farming is causing 10% of all GHG pollution. And it is notable that, while most sectors have been cutting the damage they do to the climate, emissions from farming, land use and forestry have been static for more than ten years. So, there is no justification for the complacency in agriculture which is highlighted in the Committee on Climate Change report. Of course, the dire failure by many farmers to play their part in facing up to, and curbing, climate change, is not confined to Britain. In August this year an equally troubling report came from the International Panel on Climate Change, a UN body of more than a hundred climate scientists, including some eminent British ones. It suggested that human activities were causing the degradation of soils, the spreading of deserts, the felling of forests and the destruction of wildlife. When the environment analyst, Roger Harrabin, reported this troubling picture on BBC bulletins, I was told that some people in west country agriculture saw this as a plot against livestock farmers, cooked up by the BBC, with the aid of vegans! These critics seem quite unaware of the role of the IPCC, or the efforts it goes to provide accurate and objective scientific answers. The co-chair of the IPCC working group which produced the land report is Dr Jim Skea, a cautious Scot, who is one of an energetic band of climate scientists at Imperial College.

48

These academics and many others in Britain have worked hard in recent decades to keep the issue of global warming in the minds of ministers and the public both here in Britain, and in United Nations member

states. And Jim Skea believes that now is not the time to relax efforts to cut back on emissions from farming and food production. “Land plays an important role in the climate system,” says Dr Skea. “Agriculture, forestry and other types of land use account for 23% of human greenhouse gas emissions.” Farmers Weekly recently asked the chairman of the Committee on Climate Change, Lord Deben, once a Tory agriculture minister, whether this meant we in Britain need to keep less livestock on our farms, in order to reduce methane emissions. In his view, people do not have to stop eating meat, but he suggested we should cut down. “Human beings are omnivores,” said Lord Deben, “…meat is part of our diet…but we ought to be eating less of it and better… we’ve got to learn about how to keep animals in a way which contributes less to GHG emissions.” For the Soil Association, the leading authority on organic farming, much could be done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions if farmers cut out the use of chemical fertilisers. It says, “if half of all farming in the European Union converted to organic by 2030, we could cut almost a quarter (23%) of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions simply by increased soil carbon sequestration and reduced use of mineral fertilisers. This is because healthy soils are a major store of carbon, containing three times as much carbon as the atmosphere and five times as much as forests.” We also need to remember that it is too easy to blame farmers. We should examine our own role as consumers. The excellent Energy and Climate Change Intelligence Unit reports that we waste a staggering £14.9 billion worth of food every year. If we eliminated even half of that food waste we could, at a stroke, make a huge cut in our annual contribution to global heating. Julian O’Halloran

The Return of the Trees I

‘M on a holiday flight. I’m reading the paper: Shock! Horror! The Brazilians are burning their forests, the same as we did 3,000 years ago. I look down from 35,000 feet at its tyical UK replacement, a Midlands agribusiness shop floor, monotonal, monocultural deserts of grain and grass and conifers which we nevertheless still call “the countryside”. Yet it seems there is nothing effective I can do about the Amazon or global warming or any of Attenborough’s beautiful Mea Culpas and Misereres except to savour the elusive taste of climate guilt, and reference an impotent nostalgia for the Eden we left and then destroyed, and to reheat my morally suspect indignation, because in truth we are tiny impotent individuals firing pea-shooters at the gates of Mordor, and we achieve almost nothing however much we greenwash our consciences, give up beef, donate to Greenpeace, protest, take the yacht not the car nor the plane. As far as I can make out whatever depressive hairshirt we wear for our eco-Lent, the only really effective option is to stop breathing entirely. The end is nigh! There remains a huge gap between our increasing green awareness and our unchanged norms of behaviour, mine included. We are tinkering at the margins. Judgement Day: Guilt & Dread: Past Ecocide & Future Global warming The only place we can plausibly change these narratives and take positive action - so much more fun than the hair-shirt - is in our own country. It goes like this. While we fear the future End of Days let’s not forget the already accomplished Holocaust, the megadeath we have already inflicted on our islands’ ecosphere, our pogrom of the species, our cleansing of the wild; we and our ancestors have destroyed 90% of our wildernesses and the animals and eco-systems to go with, and yet still nurture a romantic attitude to devastated places like the Lake District – a World Heritage Site no less. That status shows the power of narrative – Wordsworth’s in this case. Ecocide continues in new ways, like the epidemic of plastic. The reactions after Attenborough’s film again shows the power of narrative. While Global Warming is the slow future Apocalypse, on the conveniently distant horizon, that mostly threatens poor far away countries that we can wash our hands of because in truth we can do nothing about them, Ecocide is the megadeath we have led the world in unleashing on our own countryside - which we can repair! .... at the same time as re-absorbing some of our historically enormous CO2 footprint. By planting trees.

We all love trees. This is a positive narrative – something sorely lacking in the implicitly defeatist message of moral impotence in the face of corrupt governments and polluting corporations, and a better story than our cultural need for a new doomy Apocalypse to succeed the previous generation’s Nuclear Armageddon. Julian O Halloran is right (last month’s BS) that globally Trees may not be The Answer to CO2 and that phasing out fossil fuels is the main deal, but trees are nevertheless a very neat multi-purpose solution in individual places, to past ecocide, desertification, local climate change, the warming planet, even economic land use in upland Wales after Brexit - however much academics and statisticians may disagree about their precise CO2 mitigation value. We all love trees. We don’t have to invent an off-putting narrative of statistics, incomprehensibly complex technology and tut-tutting to sell this to ourselves, it already carries with it an optimistic economic, political and cultural story. We all love trees. The uplands of Wales are home to bogs, trees, not very many sheep, and a lot of pointess bracken. Sheep eat off all the natural regrowth of saplings that would otherwise lead to rapid reafforestation. They cost twice as much as New Zealand lamb to produce. Half their value comes from subsidy. Their replacement with broad-leaved trees would produce a self-sustaining incremental carbon sink at less cost than the sheep. Forests soak up carbon for centuries before they reach CO2 neutrality. Back in 1919 the UK government formed the Forestry Commission in order to rebuild our woodlands. In the century since then it has doubled the area of UK forest to 10% of the land, albeit mostly in conifers and in Scotland. The scale is titanic. So we already have the administrative vehicle, the experience and the positive narrative – we all love trees. Subsidise the trees (and the bogs) instead of the sheep. Voters will love it. It would be grossly unfair to displace the sheep farmers, but like anyone in business they will profitably go where the market of taxes, subsidies and prices takes them - as they did in the Midlands in response to generous 1970s EU grain prices – and latterly in response to the change from subsidy per sheep to subsidy per hectare. Love it or hate it Brexit is the perfect opportunity to abandon the lumbering, costly and restrictive agri-subsidy system and re-orientate the Welsh countryside to different values, with the help of the usual government bribes. One traditional welsh sheep farmer I know will be planting 170,000 trees this winter. My equally traditional neighbour is considering the same thing. The farmers can see the writing on the wall – sheep have had their day, bracken always was a waste of space, the next thing is the return of the forests. Hugh Colvin
