BROAD The Nasty Quiz I
sheep
T may not have escaped your notice that things are getting pretty rough out there in ‘The Real World’. All the things that made Britain great are under attack. The BBC, the National Health System, our wonderful free education system. We manufacture less and less but are apparently keen to keep selling guns and bombs to Saudi Arabia, invest in nuclear submarines we will never use, and Chinese nuclear power stations that will be the death of us all. Meanwhile the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Yes folks, we are going through a nasty period of history. Don’t even mention the mess we’ve helped make of the Middle East or the insidious racism that’s creeping across Europe and especially don’t mention Trump the Lump. Meanwhile, back at Linton Festival (outside Ross), the strange muggy weather produces a plague of tiny little spiders that rain down from the inside of the spectators tent. Small Ads 4 While the various members of Little Rumba are either squashing them or flicking them Sam’s page 6 away I noticed a sweet pony-tailed gentleman sitting on a hay bale in front of us who is Art 8 locating the tiny spiders and carrying them 20 yards to the nearest hedge to keep them out Art workshops 12 of harms way. I like to think of you, the Broad Sheep reader, being like that man. Gentle Cinema 18 and caring, but basically unfit to exist in this new, nasty, post-Brexit world. I’m here to tell you that this hippy-dippy attitude to life is going to get you nowhere. You Dance 22 need to ‘man up’. You need to get yourself some ‘cojones’ as I believe the Cubans say. Food 24 Yea, you need to get really nasty and I’m going to show you how to do it. First of all you to have to fill in this brief questionnaire - No! Stop running the other Music 26 way and avoiding eye contact. It’s only going to take a couple of minutes and I’m pretty Music workshops 38 sure it won’t result in an avalanche of junk mail. If you score higher than 7, then you can Venues 39 just walk away and I won’t bother you again. But if you are 7 or lower, I’m afraid you are Band directory 40 going to have to follow Pete’s 7 Day ‘Get Nasty’ Plan. So let’s get started. QUESTION 1. When did you last kick a dog, a cat or a small child? a) Today - 3 points. Theatre 42 b) Last week - 2 points. c) Last year - 1 point. d) Never - 0 points. Word 46 QUESTION 2. Who has been the best Labour Party leader since 1970? a) Tony Blair - 3 Grass roots 50 points. b) Gordon Brown - 2 points. Neil Kinnock - 1 point. d) Michael Foot - 0 points. Comp therapies 52 QUESTION 3. If I could have a new set of wheels (money no object) I’d buy myself: a) A Hummer - 3 points. b) A Porsche 911 - 2 points. c) A Prius - 1 point. d) A new electric bike - 0 points. We take no responsibility for the veracity of the QUESTION 4. My favourite sport is: a) Cage Fighting - 3 points. b) Karate - 2 points. information herein c) Hockey - 1 point. d) Scrabble - 0 points. QUESTION 5. The world’s greatest wall is: a) Berlin Wall - 3 points. b) Donald Trump’s Pete Mustill planned Mexican Wall - 2 points. c) Hadrian’s Wall - 1 point. d) ‘Another Brick in the Mayfield, Stapleton, Wall’ by Pink Floyd - 0 points. Nr Presteigne, Powys So, just as I expected, you haven’t done very well have you? Hockey? What kind LD8 2LW Tel: 01544 260051 of a dumb answer is that? No you definitely need to toughen up and Pete’s 7 Day Nasty Email: info@broadsheep.com Plan is going to help you fit better into 21st century society. Website: www.broadsheep.com PETS. First off, lose the Labradoodle. That’s just not the sort of animal you need to be seen with. You need something that has a muzzle and one of those harness type studded collar things and big scary teeth and is called a Romanian Fighting Pug. CAR. You need something big, probably 4-wheel drive. Bull bars on the front, possibly a pick-up. But NOT muddy. You don’t wanna be driving the baby in the mud, it’s only for getting you down to Lidl and then to the car wash and maybe squashing a few cyclists. MONEY. Loads of it, you need loads of it. You especially need more than all your mates. But how to get it? I recommend the internet. Perhaps you could send a lot of emails to Nigerians explaining you have just come into a lot of money but need to use their Nigerian bank account to launder it and suggest they send you £10,000 to be in on the scam. POLITICS. Without doubt the only way to get ahead in politics is to be very racist in a thinly-veiled manner. What people crave is some new threat to be scared of, so I suggest getting on the case of the more unlikely nations. Get really abusive about the effing Swiss with their stupid clean streets and cuckoo clocks. Or perhaps start lobbying for G4 to rebuild Hadrian’s Wall (Blimey, that’s the second mentin of Hadrian’s Wall in this article, I must have some sort of fixation) in order to keep out the bloody Scots with their free universities and their snooty superior bagpipe loving shtick. And finally T.V. You need to be watching a lot of very bad, nasty, name-calling television. And I don’t just mean Jerry Springer or Jeremy Kyle. I recommend a diet of The Real Housewives of Orange County or The Real Housewives of New York or The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. These shows consist of a group of very nasty, heavily made-up women sitting round on white leather sofas insulting each other. You could intersperse this with some of the many shows which feature real-life American cops chasing drunken dope dealers down the freeway, zig-zagging through the traffic at high speed before crashing into the safety barriers and then being beaten to death by big, fat policemen. There, I bet you feel better already. We’ll have you fighting fit and ready to meet the world in no time!

Reading makes you thin L
AWD, how we used to love Paddington Bear. He arrived, you will remember, from Darkest Peru, and was discovered on Paddington Station by the Brown family, who lived somewhere near Notting Hill. Very ordinary, the Browns. Kindly mum, cheerful children, father a bit resistant to change but ready to be won over by bears of talent and initiative. A family friend is Mr Gruber, a fellow immigrant, Jewish antique dealer and all-purpose good egg, Paddington’s particular confidant and adviser. Armed with a Hard Stare that can turn skim milk to Greek yoghurt, Paddington tackles the hypocrisies and snobberies of Britain, occupying roughly the same structural niche as Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter. You may by now be suspecting that this will be a rant about loathsome twerps who bully immigrants, or indeed about how Paddington Bear with one paw tied behind his back would be a better opposition leader than Jeremy Corbyn, or could pin Teresa May to the furniture with a single Hard Stare. Well, if you like. But the real plan is simpler than that. It is about the things that nasty beancounting publishers and film makers are trying to do to your children to make them obese - not in body, but in mind. The Paddington film was bad enough, being a wearisome catalogue of dumb slapstick episodes, general purpose CGI showings-off and sickly emotings. Reviewers, except this one, seemed to love it, from which we infer, perhaps wrongly, that the hospitality surrounding the screening was extra lavish. Things got worse. Deputed to read a story to a person about four years old, I discovered a book called Paddington. I picked it up. Off I went to the sofa, four-year-old alongside me, ready to relay a spot of razor-sharp satire camouflaged as knockabout comedy. No such luck. The bastards had taken the jokes out (a laughing child can choke sooooo easily), made the kindly but acerbic Mr Gruber into a sort of cipher or drone, pasteurised and homogenised the original, dropping in story lines of a feebleness that would have sent Paddington back to
Darkest Peru as fast as his short furry legs could carry him. The lemon in the original had been replaced by sugar, or possibly corn syrup laced trans fats. This was a story without nutritious elements, stuffed with the raw material of mental obesity, followed as night follows day by intellectual diabetes and atrophy. We flung it aside, and made one up. Paddington is only one specimen in a grim trend. There is an ancient publishing maxim that says it is folly to publish in one book (price £5) what can be stretched, by the addition of milk, water, sickly E numbers and second-rate illustrations, into six books (total price £30). It is of course hard to get close enough to the bean counters to let them know you have rumbled their little game, because they are cowering behind dense entanglements of PR people and receptionists and interns and (when you point out that they are stretching the rich red meat of excellent stories with toxic fillers into foul grey burgers) lawyers. And of course the public at large does not realise that large-scale children’s publishing, like most of the rest of publishing, is not about books, but about money. (Hear that distant neighing? It is the pitying laughter of publishers, audible even over the clack of counted beans?) There is a way round this. Shun Paddington spinoffs, and head straight for the hilarious original by Michael Bond, bought second hand. Refuse to trog down to Hereford to see the filmic BFG struggling through a glutinous swamp of sugar syrup and go straight for sharp, subversive, written by Dahl. Boycott the latest movie antics of the scrubbed-shining Swallows and Amazons and read the books, plodding but grubby. Put on that wolf suit and leap with a glad cry into the mad and sinister universe Where the Wild Things Are, ignoring the horrid little zoo where the spinoff merchants have put miniature copies of them and are charging admission. Ignore the merchants of sugar, folks. Reading real books makes you thin. Llywelyn Hadid ap Twhir
ON NUCLEAR POWER Is there an argument for creating more nuclear waste when it would cost £100 billion and take a century to clean up Sellafield alone? Meanwhile spent fuel and vast amounts of radioactive waste continue to stockpile. Who wants it buried in their backyard?

cinema CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (15) In remote Pacific Northwest woodland, Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen) raises and radically home-schools his six, genius-tinged children whilst his wife (Trin Miller) battles with bi-polar disorder, finally committing suicide in hospital. Despite her rich, conservative father (Frank Langella) threatening to have them arrested if they arrive, they then travel in their converted bus to attend her funeral. The journey offers numerous opportunities for the family’s hippie-going-on Marxist values to grate against America’s overfed consumerism, opportunities that actor and now writer/director Matt Ross and his talented cast avidly mine for both humour and sly ideological commentary. Happily neither detracts from the core drama, especially as Ben inevitably finds his own moral compass challenged by the children he’s striven so hard to cast in his own mould. THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS (15) A post-apocalyptic Britain has been decimated by a fungus which turns its victims into flesh-eating zombies, but on a heavily guarded army base a small group of apparently immune, but ultimately doomed children are being studied by a callous biologist (Glenn Close). However when its eventually overrun by crazed zombies, one highly gifted child (remarkable newcomer Sennia Nanua) is spared by her kindly teacher (Gemma Arterton) who escapes with her along with a protective soldier (Paddy Considine) and the treacherous scientist. Based on the terrific but terrifying best-selling novel by M.R. Carey, PEAKY BLINDERS director Colm McCarthy’s big screen breakthrough has elements of such undead epics as WORLD WAR Z and 28 DAYS LATER but with a uniquely nuanced narrative and winning turns from all involved.

THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (18)
Undeniably innovative, Nicolas Roeg’s follow-up to the horrific thriller DON’T LOOK NOW was nominally a sci-fi adventure but without reptilian invaders wreaking havoc on an alien Earth. Instead its hero, played with a dreamily apt intensity by a popstar, David Bowie, arrives here to seek the water that will save his drought-ridden planet and armed with brilliant scientific mind and aided by a mightily impressed lawyer (Buck Henry), establishes a corporation which nets him millions and coincidentally, a loving girlfriend (Candy Clark). But diluted by a fascination with Earth’s corrupting physical pleasures, his mission ultimately ends in a failure that can be seen both as allegory and metaphor, but downbeat finale aside, ex-cinematographer Roeg’s striking images and the powerful performances will forever stay etched into your memory. 29 Oct OUR KIND OF TRAITOR (15) Clun Memorial Hall 01588 640254 29 Oct EDDIE THE EAGLE (PG) Clifton on Teme VH 01886 812238 29 Oct CHICKLIT (15) Aston on Clun VH 01588 660545 29 Oct ZOOTROPOLIS (PG) Upton upon Severn Memorial Hall 01684 591044 29 Oct GOLDEN YEARS (12A) Neston Civic Hall 0151 336 7805 31 Oct EDDIE THE EAGLE (PG) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911

food page Mister Pernickety’s Peregrinations in West Wales
M
ISTER Pernickety doesn’t understand why the highways that pass Jamaica Inn and Bodmin Moor and the bye-ways of West Cornwall become impossibly bunged up every summer with the family saloons of the hoi polloi and the urban tractors of Ranging Sloanes, all seeking refuge from mad dog days in London and the over-stuffed suburbs of the south east. If they’re looking for ozone-infused air, the music of breaking waves, or perhaps a deserted beach in which to rediscover their ravaged spirits, haven’t they heard of Pembrokeshire? ‘Thank God they haven’t!’ those clever Marches dwellers who are the readers of the Wooly Organ will be murmuring anxiously to themselves. ‘We’d rather keep the West Wales secret to ourselves.’ They need not fear, for, of course, Mr P agrees, and only allows the cat to poke its nose out of the bag in the Marches’ own opinion former, not in the Metropolitan news sheets for whom he also plies his pen. Let, he urges, the hoard of Range-Roving ignorami worm their way through narrow sunken lanes to overcrowded beaches, exorbitant eateries and bijou designer cottages in St Ives and St Mawes, where they can bellow at one another in strident self-satisfaction as they shop for a loaf of Cornish focaccia in the St Mawes’ bakery, or a still twitching crustacean from the Lobster shop – while Mr P returns for the umpteenth joyous time to the magical empty shores of St Bride’s Bay, and the warmly patinated surroundings of the Druidstone. While a little sadness still lingers over the place since the deaths of Jane and Rod Bell who created the hotel and ran it in their own idiosyncratic way for forty years, their son, Angus, and his wife Beth have a good grip on the place, tweaking the infrastructure where needed without in any way altering its unique ethos. Mister P arrived with his Lovely Companion and her son. Formerly known as the Children’s Menu Consultant, this young individual is now huge and hungry, and has asked to be billed henceforward as the HVC (Human Vacuum Cleaner). Mr P has written about the food at the Druidstone before, and only mentions en passant the Caribbean Feast that they ate with Master Pernickety and two pretty girls to celebrate his birthday and his love of all things Rastafarian. Like all the Druidstone’s regular Tuesday night themed Feasts, it was booked out and a great tasting event, including Rude Girl Saltfish & Potato Patties, Dynamite Sauce, Dub Dub Chili Butter Corncobs, and Bajun Slow Roast Tin Can Lamb – all delicious, if not always readily identifiable. On the one day of their week when the weather promised a little beastliness, and swimming in the lukewarm sea was not an option, Mr P took his party off to Picton Castle – always enjoyable, and notable for the unusual eating arrangements it offers. Being run neither by the National Trust nor Cadw, the trustees have taken the wacky decision to install in the courtyard Maria’s Spanish tapas bar and restaurant, which serves delicious authentic Iberian food and is a successful tapas bar in its own right.
24
Ever conscious of his duty to his readers, Mister P also booked a table that evening at one of the several fish restaurants in the area. The most promising was the Saint Brides Inn in Little Haven, an attractive seaside village
which, had it been in Cornwall, would have found its steep streets impossibly jammed with expensive motorcars and braying Sloanes. It is, perhaps inevitably, the location for a Welsh TV romantic soap opera called Cara Fi. The St Brides Inn is so popular that Mr P could only have a table at 6:30, which suited the HVC, who claimed to be starving. While there is nothing remarkable or stylish about the way the St Brides is presented there is nothing objectionable either, apart from several hundred promotional china whisky water jugs of inevitably naff design dangling from every beam. On the walls hang a series photos of lighthouses in conflict with the sea, and some sepia shots of the village in olden times. The HVC started and was happy with Calamari Rings cooked in batter with what the LC deemed to be an offthe-shelf chili dip. Mr P relished his Scallops Wrapped in Sage & Pancetta [£8.50], although the salad that accompanied it was edible but frankly dull; a good chef should have considered that a few more exciting leaves – rocket, say – would have lifted it easily at little extra cost. The LC, sipping an agreeable Koppie Valley Chenin Blanc, chose, like her son, a Fish Stew, consisting of moules, cod, salmon, prawns and something else that Mr P wrote down but can’t read. Mr P helped himself to a mouthful and was disappointed. He was expecting something more like a Mediterranean bouillabaisse, which wasn’t fair, but considered that there was too much tomato and not enough strong flavour to it, and salmon tends to taste out of place in this company. The garlic bread that came with it was simply a slice of granary loaf with a garlic paste smeared on, while the LC had been looking forward to a proper garlic-soaked baguette, fresh from the oven. Mr P’s is salivating even as he describes his own Fillet of Sea Bass on a Bed of Smoked Salmon, Leeks, Rosemary and Bubble’n’squeak; fresh, if perhaps a few seconds too long in the pan, and falling off the bone, he enjoyed it immensely. Puddings were a great success. The LC was pleased with her Summer Pudding, in which the juices had descended
as they should to give the base just the right amount of sogginess. The HVC loved his Mint Choc Chip Sundae but was ultimately defeated by the size of it – served in a pint jar. Mr P had to help him out, having enjoyed his Fruit Crumble, which included real plum stones and was a great deal better than the disappointing version he’d had at the Druidstone’s Caribbean Feast a few days before. With a couple of glasses of Rioja for Mr P, l’addition scraped in at just under ninety quid. Mr Pernickety urges his readers not to pass on to the wider ignorami the good news that Pembrokeshire remains – for humans as it is for seals – a great place to swim, eat and sleep. www.misterpernickety.com
