This Is The End My Friend SCENARIO 1 It’s the annual shareholder’s meeting but so many outraged people have decided to turn up, they have had to move from the back room of the Dog & Duck to the Town Hall. Outside the Town Hall an angry mob of people with placards have assembled. The placards all say the same thing. PETE OUT! PETE OUT! The Broad Sheep readers are in no mood for compromise. Once the meeting gets underway the litany of accusations does not make pleasant reading. Millions of dollars squirrelled away in offshore bank accounts. A private jet always on hand at Shobdon Airfield just in case Pete decides on a whim to go for a drink in Bromyard (or some other far flung outpost of the Broad Sheep empire). Broad Sheep contributors imprisoned in a caravan site in Llandod and only allowed out once a month to write their column and go to the chippy. Afternoons spent lounging around at some Leominster golf club buying drinks for all and sundry. Not to mention the infamous and entirely unecessary gold plated Mercedes van with matching platinum-plated electric bike for deliveries. The outcome is a fait accompli, the shame-faced editor is sent off to live in the Cayman Islands with only his second largest yacht and a suitcase of bullion to keep him company. Good riddance to bad rubbish. SCENARIO 2 It was a cold drizzly day in August when the door of the Broad Sheep office slammed open and in strolled the boss, the capo and the consigliere of the Presteigne Cosa Nostra. The heavily set capo lost no time laying his cards on the table. “This is no two-bit shakedown but we is thinking that your esteemed rag should conjoin with our waste management business. We don’t want to be hitting the mattress, but since you are not a wise guy we figured you could juice us up as an associate. The books are open so forget about it!” “How do you mean, forget about it?” stammered the cringing Broad Sheep editor. “Well”, explained the capo, “forget about it, is like if you agree with someone, like ‘Racquel Welch is one great piece of ass, forget about it’. But then if you disagree, like ‘a Lincoln is better than a Cadillac?’ Forget about it. You know?” But then, it’s also like if something’s the greatest thing in the world, like, ‘Minchia! Those peppers in red wine sauce, forget about it!’ But it’s also like saying ‘Go To Hell!’ Like you know, like ‘Hey Ratso, you got a one-inch pecker?’ And Ratso says ‘forget about it!’ and sometimes it just means well ‘Forget about it’. So you, mister editor man ‘Forget about it’. Capeesh?
THE ACTUAL STORY I walk into the office and tell Clare “I’ve done 25 years of Broad Sheep. I need a Clare Edwards change. I’m thinking of selling it.” Clare says “Okay, I’ll take it on”. End of story! The Lodge, Westhide, So this is my last issue and thank God it’s Clare who’s taking over. She’s alHereford, HR1 3RQ ready been running it pretty much single-handed for the last ten years anyway and she’s about 3000 times more together and efficient than I am so that’s only Tel: 01432 850444 Email: info@broadsheep.com good for the magazine. You, dear reader probably won’t notice any difference. I shall still write bits for it, but I won’t be doing the deliveries anymore, that’s Website: www.broadsheep.com probably going to be Clare’s fella Martyn’s job. He is an extremely friendly guy but he does like a bit of a natter, so it could be late November before you see the September issue if he stops for a chat with everyone in Hereford! The few people I’ve told about this change have immediately asked “what are you going to do instead?” having correctly spotted that I am unqualified for any role in the real world. I am therefore compiling a list of the exciting new possibilities that are opening up for me. 1. Turn ‘Pete’s Pannacottas’ into a world-wide mega-brand by inventing a new irresistable flavoured wobbly desert. ‘Salted-Caramel & Brussel Sprouts’ anyone? 2. Discover cheap, easy to find alternative to Lithium for electric bike batteries. Possibly all the metal from scrapped VW diesel engines. 3. Write a hit song for Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran to sing as a duet. 4. Sit around doing bugger all except looking at maps and planning long and unlikely bike rides. I think option 4. sounds the most promising. Cover pic: Laura Cortes & The Dance Cards; Velvet Violin, Assembly Rooms, Presteigne - 1 Oct

Now Everyone is Digging Holes S EVERAL years ago there was an epidemic of subterranean constructions in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. Millions of cubic metres of soil were excavated from beneath some of the borough’s most opulent houses in order to accommodate underground car parks, swimming pools and cinemas. The craze briefly spread to the London Borough of Camden, though when one sheikh wanted to buy a complete Nash terrace in Regents Park and start burrowing downwards, planners said enough was enough.
Not so in the world of culture. Short-listed for this November’s RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture is Richard Rogers’ £135-million World Conservation Centre for the British Museum, which includes a huge underground exhibition hall. Externally, the complex’s steel and glass facades bear RR’s machine-age imprimatur – a far cry from Norman Foster’s glazed dome within. Over in the Royal Borough, the Victoria & Albert Museum has recently unveiled its £55-million Exhibition Road Quarter, designed by Amanada Levete’s AL_A practice: a rich melange of the styles, colours and quirky details we have come to expect from the former partner (with the late Jan Kaplicky) of Future Systems. As well as being the youngest-ever female winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize (for the 1999 Lords Media Centre), Levete has been chalking up some notable achievements, including Lisbon’s Museum of Art, Architecture & Technology (MAAT), which opened last October and is one of the finalists in this year’s World Festival of Architecture in Berlin. Founded by Prince Albert in 1857, the Victoria & Albert Museum is the world’s largest museum dedicated to the decorative arts, a depository for more than 4 million items. Space is of the essence and though it has long run an ambitious programme of art- and fashion-related blockbuster shows, it

desperately needed a big gallery space. But where to put it? Underground was AL_A’s competitionwinning solution. The wester nmost edge of the site was earmarked for the huge excavation programme, which took six years to complete. The area was once known as Boiler House Yard and in the 1980s provided a temporary home for the fledgling Design Museum, before its move to Docklands. That ‘yard’ has now been transformed into the Sackler Courtyard, providing a new public entrance to the museum from Exhibition Road. It is tiled with over 11,000 white porcelain tiles, making it a dazzling experience on a sunny day. It is approached through what was once a solid stone Screen (the Aston Webb Screen of 1909), now ‘punctured’ by no less than 11 gated arched
entrances, making it a colonnade. In the topmost corner of the courtyard is a nameless café (way too small, with a seating capacity of only 50, so expect to queue for your latte), whose origami-like ‘folded’ roof profile may be a subtle tribute to Amanda Levete’s close friend, the late Zaha Hadid.
extension, nicknamed The Spiral. The scheme was abandoned in 2004 due to difficulties in attracting funding. After experiencing the new complex’s rich palette of materials and colours, many of the V&A’s visitors this summer will be thanking their lucky stars that Libeskind’s Spiral never happened.
Fifteen metres beneath the courtyard is a huge exhibition hall – the Sainsbury Gallery – providing 11,000sq m of column-free display space (identical in size to the BM’s new Bloomsbury space) for major crowd-pullers like the Balenciaga, Bowie, McQueen, and Pink Floyd shows. High up in the gallery’s ceiling area, a series of rooflights - reminiscent of Concorde exhaust ducts - connect with an oculus set in the corner of the courtyard above. Within the existing fabric of the V&A building, fanning out from the Blavatnik Hall, are a shop, cloakrooms and the Sackler Centre for arts education.
The opening exhibition in the V&A’s new Sainsbury Gallery will be Opera: Passion, Power and Politics (30 September 2017 – 25 February 2018). Nick Jones Picture caption Bird’s eye view from Exhibition Road looking east through the remodelled Aston Webb screen into the porcelain-tiled Sackler courtyard, with the V&A’s new origami-roofed café (left). On the staircase descent to the Sainsbury Gallery, the architects have chosen to highlight, with scarlet-painted steel columns and beams, the structural engineering achievement of supporting the dead weight of 800 tonnes of the Grade I-listed museum’s west façade. The engineering aspect of the project (by Arups) is as impressive as the same firm’s subterranean sections of the re-modelled Westminster tube station, alongside and beneath Portcullis House. Back in 1996, Polish enfant terrible Daniel Libeskind proposed a monstrous cube-like deconstructivist

cinema LOGAN LUCKY (12A) Having allegedly retired after 2013’s Side Effects, maverick director Steven Soderbergh was tempted back to the fray after reading newcomer Rebecca Blunt’s script about the ill-fated Logan brothers’ Jimmy (Soderbergh regular Channing Tatum) and Clyde (Adam Driver) plan to rob Charlotte Motor Speedway during a NASCAR race. Referencing his highly successful heist franchise, Soderbergh himself claims it’s “an inversion of an Oceans movie” although it certainly has some wonderfully comedic moments and wild-card twists, not least when the red-neck siblings’ lack of experience compels them to spring safe-cracking supremo Joe Bang (an improbably blonde Daniel Craig) from jail, oh, and Clyde’s handicap of a false arm. Seth McFarlane as a bumptious racing driver, Hilary Swank as a suspicious cop and Katie Holmes as Jimmy’s ansty ex-wife add to the very considerable fun. All reveiws by Mark Williams

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS (12A)
Following sci-fi hits Lucy and The Fifth Element, Luc Besson’s vivid imagination – “It’s all I have,” he recently quipped – has kindled a mighty work based on the highly influential French comic book series. Under their commander Arün Flint (Clive Owen), Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (model-turned-actress, Cara Delevingne) are two enforcers traveling through the myriad territories of the planet Alpha, an ever-expanding and peaceful metropolis in the 28th Century. When a mysterious dark force menaces the eponymous City of a Thousand Planets, the pair must quickly determine who is behind this threat and then neutralise it. For what is allegedly the most expensive French film ever, Luc Besson has wrought a gripping adventure set in a visually breathtaking, 3D universe peopled by extraordinary creatures. 16 Sept LOVING (2016) (12A) Bicton VH 01743 850495 18 Sept SULLY - MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON (12A) Pattingham VH 01902 700586 18 Sept HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 19 Sept THEIR FINEST (12A) Acton Scott VH 01694 781260 19 Sept WHISKY GALORE (2016) (PG) The Talbot, Whitchurch 01948 660660 20 Sept A UNITED KINGDOM (12A) Escleyside Hall, Michaelchurch Escley 01981 510696 20 Sept SULLY - MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON (12A) Chetton VH 01746 789257 20 Sept VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) The Red House, Albrighton 01902 373854 20 Sept LION (PG) Myddle VH 01939 290872 21 Sept A UNITED KINGDOM (12A) Kinnerley Parish Hall 01691 682282 21 Sept LION (PG) Claverley VH 01746 710528 21 Sept DENIAL (!@A) Pudleston VH 01568 760606 21 Sept HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) Gorsley VH 01989 720358 21 Sept LA LA LAND (12A) Chelmarsh Parish Hall 01746 862884 22 Sept LA LA LAND (12A) Clungunford Parish Hall 01588 660159 22 Sept THE GRADUATE (15) Lydbury North VH 01588 680302 22 Sept A UNITED KINGDOM (12A) Stoke Prior VH 07850 030821

CITY OF GHOSTS (18) Few documentaries feature their subjects under certain threat of death if caught by those they sought to expose, but that’s the sorry lot of the incredibly brave young ‘citizen journalists’ running the online news service ‘Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently’. Oscar-nominated for his Mexican drug war doc, Cartel Land, Matthew Heineman seamlessly knits together interviews, safe-house fly-on-the-wall reportage and often harrowing news footage of ISIS psychopaths brutally subjugating, indoctrinating and, yes, executing the denizens of Syria’s once great, cosmopolitan city. Having eventually moved to Turkey, and then Germany and using mobile phone and video footage smuggled out of Raqqa at huge risk to those who remained, this tight knit, visibly battle-weary group somehow manage to continue broadcasting to a world that if not uncaring, remains apparently impotent to bring ISIS carnage to an end. 29 Sept LION (PG) Longden VH 07539 545846 29 Sept A STREET CAT NAMED BOB (12A) Colwall VH 01684 540926 29 Sept LA LA LAND (12A) Marton VH 01938 580116 30 Sept THE BIG SLEEP (U) Belmont Hall, Wellington www.theclifton.org 30 Sept LION (PG) Neston Civic Hall 0151 336 7805

HOSE readers of the Woolly Organ who have seen the 1987 film of Bruce Chatwin’s On the Black Hill will recall with pleasure the long, virtuoso shot that opens it. Cinematographer, Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s point of view is a little south of the peak of Hay Bluff, looking west across the dank moorland that tops the Black Mountains. A scattering of peat-stained ewes are grazing sullenly beneath a sombre sky; a steady drizzle drops from clouds suspended a few feet above the gorse and heather. A first title appears: ‘Wales’. The camera pans slowly to the north, revealing a softer view across the valley of the Wye, over the riverside town of Hay, towards the gentle Begwyns where the Rev Kilvert used to stride. Without a pause or a cut, the camera’s eye continues its arc until it is looking east, over a green landscape of fecund fields bathed in golden sunlight. A second title appears: ‘England’. This single, beautiful shot captures the essence of the story – the tension between the inhabitants of the lower, fruitful land, and those earlier natives of the higher ground; the suspicion and jealousy that straddles the borderland created by acquisitive Saxons, reinforced by Mercian kings and Norman Marcher Lords with their pale of stone castles. Since Mr Pernickety first walked the gently rising ridgeway from Hatterall Hill to Hay Bluff, some thirty years ago, the panorama to the east over the magical Olchon Valley, the Cats’ Back and the Golden Valley has been a favourite, enhanced by the knowledge that the folds of land leading up to the mountains conceal tumbling farms, abandoned barns, rickety footbridges over glittering brooks, and deep sunken lanes overhung by gnarled oak and birch. In a valley beyond the Cat’s Back, at the top of a small dingle, stands a whitewashed stone pub in the scattered community of Craswall. The Bull’s Head was once the most special pub Mr P had encountered – absolutely original in its steep cobbled path down to a duck-through doorway, with deeply worn stone flags within, and dangerously low slung beams, ancient fireplaces and inglenooks, all untouched by ugly improvements, where ale and simple food were served; it was a place to drink, think and talk. Then it was bought by the people who own the Swan Hotel in Hay (and who used to own the Ancient Camp in Ruckhall until the Herefordshire planners were persuaded to release the place from its designated use as a pub so it could be sold as a private dwelling at a substantial profit). These owners spruced up the place, wiped away several layers of patina and served up vaguely gastro dishes on beastly rough-hewn slate platters. Its old charm and former raison d’être had been entirely lost. The owners wouldn’t serve draft beer; they were only open at weekends. A visit to the Bull’s Head web site now offers the information that it is ‘temporarily closed’; it has been for over two years. A punter could be forgiven for thinking that the owners have given up. Mr P can only hope that it will be put on the market as a licensed pub – not as a private dwelling like the Ancient Camp – and that someone who understands its unique character will save it. In the meantime, a few miles away and just as re-
mote as the Bull’s Head, the Bridge Inn at Michaelchurch Escley thrives. Mr P knew the Bridge but hadn’t visited it in ten years. Like many remote rustic pubs it’s had several owners and a variable reputation, but word had reached Mr P that it was going through a good patch, so he took the opportunity to show his Lovely Companion a little of the landscape he loves. On a wonderful late summer afternoon they walked a ridge below the mountains and sucked in gulps of pure air and delicious sights before descending down the lane to cross the ford on the Escley Brook to the small stone inn set beside it. Outwardly, a little had changed. There are some useful-looking new facilities for campers and, indeed, Glampers using the handsome yurts that have been erected for those who like the idea of camping without the usual discomforts. Externally the pub is fairly plain; Mr P, the LC and the Human Hoover sat outside on bistro style chrome chairs around a matching table standing on golden Cotswold gravel beside the brook. Nature came to the rescue to improve the scene with an evening sun slanting through the weeping willows, as if M. Monet himself had painted them. While Mr P’s party decided what to eat, he ignored negative thoughts about the furniture and the golden gravel. He could only hope that he hadn’t driven for over an hour to be served the pretentiously conceived, badly cooked food that is so depressingly the norm, even in lovely west Herefordshire. To start, they ordered ‘nibbles’ – a troubling term, with its rodent connotations – as a starter: a platter of anchovies, Serrano ham and bread. They were shown into a tiny stone-walled cell – such as Edward II might have known in Berkley Castle while awaiting his sticky end; but still Mr P kept his judgement in reserve. The starting ‘nibbles’ were encouraging, with good, possibly in-house bread, although Mr P thought one small pot of anchovies, another small pot of air-dried ham and three hunks of bread weren’t good value at £9.50. However the main courses dispelled any forebodings. The LC chose a Feather Steak – an unusual cut from the shoulder blade, and not often served in Britain. It was offered either rare or medium rare. The LC chose rare, and so, to her surprise, it came. It is a cut which is clearly tricky to cook without toughening it, but the LC found it perfect, tender and juicy, with a bowl of authentic frites.
The Human Hoover has developed a taste for Belly Pork and chose the Bridge’s version – slow roasted with garlic, ginger and soy sauce. Mr P was offered a forkful and could only shake his head with pleasure. His own Breast of Chicken, wrapped in Serrano Ham in a Creamy Garlic Sauce arrived not looking attractive, two amorphous lumps drenched in thickening white sauce. However, with the first mouthful Mr P recalled the late Chuck Berry’s advice about judging books by their covers. It turned out to be an especially well conceived dish with great balance in the sauce, and a texture to the chicken and ham that delivered pleasure with every mouthful. This dish and the belly pork were enhanced with succulent al dente steamed vegetables, and a good Argentinean merlot at £14 a bottle. After an exceptional dinner, topped off by all piling into the Human Hoover’s Shepherd’s Mango and Passion Fruit Sorbet the deliciousness of what they’d eaten sank in, the hour’s journey seemed entirely justified while a benign glow suffused the party. www.misterpernickety.com

The eighth Arcadia Festival will take place in Leintwardine, Kingsland, Downton and Brampton Bryan continuing its commitment to great music with an ensemble of international musicians directed by Thomas Bowes and Eleanor Alberga. This years theme is Syrinx and Harp – a French Affair, which features works by Debussy, Ravel, and Saint Saens, plus that unjustly neglected figure of French music, Albert Roussel. Beethoven features in each concert and Eleanor Alberga’s first string quartet at Kingsland. A special feature this year is the harp, and Hugh Webb will unravel the secrets of the instrument in a special event at Brampton Bryan at which Roger Nichols, world authority on French music, will also bring an insight to us in a talk illustrated by the musicians of the Festival. Concerts will be in the usual surroundings of the historic 14th century Leintwardine Church, its Norman fellow church in Kingsland, and the delightful rural setting of Downton. For full details of the events go to www.arcadiamusic.org.uk Tickets are available in various packages: £15 each, £25 two concerts, £35 three, and £40 for all four events (£10 for the Brampton Bryan event on its own). Available from LAR box office 01584 878141 or online www.ludlowassemblyrooms.co.uk Also available at Griffiths Garage Shop Leintwardine, Kingsland Post Office, Aardvark Books Brampton Bryan, or call local agents 01547 540762, 01568 709579, or on the door.

grass roots Shale Gas - is it safe to use the F Word? I
T MUST be nearly ten years since I first heard energy economists saying that a shale gas revolution was about to sweep Britain, just as it was doing in America. Some claimed that fracking would provide the perfect bridge from fossil fuels to a low carbon future. Fracking involves cracking open tiny bubbles of gas or oil in shale rock thousands of feet below ground. A chemical solution, is pumped at high pressure, often through aquifers, layers of rock on which some people depend for drinking water. By 2009 fracking was going on at full pelt in the USA. And it has since been credited with arresting what had been America’s growing dependence on imported fuel. In Britain, it soon seemed, no energy conference was complete without maps showing swathes of the UK sitting above shale rock. Geologists spoke of the steep decline in the UK’s supplies of North Sea gas. And they predicted big things for shale gas in Britain. Yet, after all this time, the UK has seen precious little shale gas development. And even today fracking has been approved at only three sites in England. When Third Energy applied to frack for shale gas at Kirby Misperton, in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, over 4,000 people sent objections to the county council. Only 34 responses were in favour. But the council sided with that tiny minority and gave the go-ahead for fracking. In Lancashire, Cuadrilla’s plans to frack for shale gas at two sites near Blackpool have brought years of protests. A decision by the county council to reject Cuadrilla’s plans was over-ruled by the government last year. Since then anti-fracking demonstrations have intensified there. And counter measures against the protestors have become tougher. Police have been drafted in from nearby forces to contain the anti-frackers and there’ve been over 180 arrests. At the same time advocates of fracking are now being satirised on stage. In “Fracked! OR : Please don’t us the F-word”, playwright Alistair Beaton lampoons what he sees as the slick public relations tactics used by the shale gas developers. As a village faces the threat of fracking, the PR man acting for the energy company insists that it must never uses the word fracking, because of its harsh sound and sexual connotations. In the real world, it would have taken a very skilled spin doctor to make the early efforts of the shale gas developers look good. When Cuadrilla began to frack in Lancashire in 2011 Blackpool was quickly rocked by two minor earthquakes. Fracking was held up for over a year while a review took place. When the green light was given for fracking to re-start, new tremor-monitoring conditions were imposed on the companies. It was hard not to conclude that Cuadrilla been flat-footed and that the safety regulators had been caught napping.

In the south of England, resistance to fracking at Balcombe in Sussex, made national front page news in 2013. Local people opposed to operations by Cuadrilla said they were trying to protect the Weald Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. They were joined by activists from across Britain camping on the roadside near the site. Some tabloids portrayed the campers as a mob of full time eco-warriors. But villagers pointed out they had already been resisting Cuadrilla’s plans for two years before the campers arrived. Both groups of protestors had been alarmed by the environmental damage said to have been caused by fracking in America. Across several states, people had complained of the disturbance caused by the hundreds of truck movements required for each well to be fracked. It emerged also that some well shafts leaked. A number of farmers alleged that shale gas operations had polluted their land or their water supplies. These complaints were eventually backed the US Environmental Protection Agency, which last December issued a long report on contamination, finding evidence of “impacts to drinking water at each stage” of the fracking process. Oil and gas developers in the USA also face big questions over their alleged role in climate change, because of widespread accidental discharges of methane from oil and gas drilling sites. Over twenty years methane released into the atmosphere has a global warming potential over eighty times greater than that of carbon dioxide. The sludge left behind after fracking has also been a big issue in the states. This waste may include some of the thousands of gallons of acid and other chemicals that are routinely pumped underground at fracking sites. The flowback liquid which comes back to the surface may also be radioactive. In America some of this toxic waste has been pumped into abandoned wells, or left lying in open lagoons. In Britain, the Environment Agency has already ruled out the use of open lagoons for fracking waste. So where will fracking waste be put? Retired petrochemicals engineer John Busby concludes in a recent paper that, as things stand now, there are no treatment plants in Britain ready to deal with fracking waste. Given that advocates of fracking want to see thousands of shale gas wells drilled across Britain, how much support
does fracking have from the main political parties? In the last three years both Labour and the Lib Dems have reversed their policies and moved to support a ban on fracking. And opposition to fracking from the nationalist parties has resulted in effective bans on fracking in both Scotland and Wales. So the Tories now look isolated in their support. But the stakes have now been raised by Ineos, operator of the giant Grangemouth refinery, led by the freewheeling billionaire Jim Ratcliffe. Ineos Shale, said to have 30 shale gas planning applications in the pipeline, has obtained a wide-ranging interim injunction against unlawful activities by campaigners aimed at impeding its operations. If upheld, this move could end in protestors being jailed for up to two years for actions which have so far been treated lightly by the courts. In a long drawn out conflict between Ineos and campaigners, the skirmishes over fracking of the last few years might begin to look like little more than the phoney war. Julian O’Halloran
