Weird Weekend

Pete and George in happier times

N Saturday morning I sat down to bodge together my usual last minute editorial. I made some jokes about Biden and slagged off Britain’s sporting achievements. Then, just before I mailed it, I heard that Tom Pidcock (who I had mentioned) had retired from the Tour De France with Covid. Then in the early evening I turned on the telly and surprise, surprise caught Henry Patten winning a dramatic men’s doubles final against all the odds! Then later the TV was suddenly swamped with film of the assassination attempt on Trump and I began to wonder if the mere mentioning of peoples names in my Ed was causing massive ructions in the real world. At that point I sent it off exactly as I had written it on Saturday morning to try and avert anything happening to George Clooney or our much-maligned footballing heroes. HOW COULD YOU GEORGE?

By the time you read this I imagine the people who hold the real power in the good old US of A (the film stars) will have sent poor old Joe Biden off to wherever old Presidents go. Best not move to Florida as he doesn’t want to keep bumping into Donald. Yes, George Clooney really stuck the knife in, just because Joe made a couple of minor, speech errors, such as confusing Putin and Zelensky. Clooney’s remarks were widely reported but what didn’t get much publicity was a casual remark he made to one of his aides, while the microphones were still live. “It’s also about time they stopped that Pete guy writing the Broad Sheep editorials. His grip on reality, not to mention his lack of correct punctuation is an embarrassment to the What’s On press”.

George! How could you? We used to be such good mates. (see pic). I detect some dark forces at work here. I know it’s unlikely that George reads Broad Sheep every month, he probably only gets to see it when he goes to the dentist and reads the free magazines, which judging by the state of his teeth is pretty damn regularly. So the only other explanation must be that some person who is jealous of my page 3 slot has been badmouthing me to him. The question is which of the Broad Sheep regulars is most likely to be on buddy/ buddy terms with Clooney?

Comp therapies on losers” the Petester‘s going nowhere.

O’Halloran on the green pages is a likely culprit. (By the way massive congrats to Ellie Chowns for smashing it as N. Herefordshire’s new Green MP.) He could easily have met George when he was a hot, shit, international, news hound. Mark, on the film page, is another candidate he could have bumped into George at some swanky film premiere. Pernickety might have made friends with him at one of his posh restaurant outings. Sam, Hugh the list of potential Brutus’s is endless. So, let me say right here – “Bring it

Now to finish off this month’s masterpiece I am sure you will be gagging to get my take on UK’s progress through this month’s frantic succession of major sporting events. Wimbledon, Formula1, Euro footy, Tour de France etc. WIMBLEDON. Boo-hoo no more Andy Murray, he is finally calling it a day after an illustrious career dogged by injury, sky high expectations from his British fans and the unfortunate fact that his classmates included Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal! Highest placed Brit this year is Henry Patten who with his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara is through to his first Grand Slam final. Britain’s Emma Raducanu saw her bright run at Wimbledon ended in the fourth round as she was defeated by Lulu Sun, from New Zealand.

Patten and Heliovaara have a quick

FORMULA I. Finally after a few bad years trailing around after Max Verstappen Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix and cried all over first his Dad then his Mum and then anybody else who was within 100 yards of the podium AND Lando Norris came third. Result!

FOOTY. Following a lack lustre series of marginal, last minute wins and against all the odds England is through to the final. Despite my quite wanting to watch 16-year-old Spanish superstar Lamine Yamal in action I intend to hide my head under a large pile of cushions until it is all over.

TOUR DE FRANCE. Best result so far 2nd place on stage 9 for Tom Pidcock but despite the best efforts of Geraint and the gang the golden days of Frome and Wiggins are over. Meanwhile the over confident, Slovenian, Pogacar, the wily Dane, Vingegaard and the young Belgian pretender, Evenepoel fight it out for the win.

MORAL. If you are imagining that your young progeny might support you in old age by becoming a British sporting superstar the best plan is to buy them a Formula 1 car. Approx cost £12million.

A Little Bit of Magic philosophy

SO who’s your favourite philosopher? Anyone professionally involved with philosophy can expect to be asked, sooner or later, this annoying question. Notice the give-away word ‘so’ with its irritating assumption that if you’re in this line of business you MUST have a favourite. This is akin to asking parents which child they like most. Mind you, I recall hearing a father admit that although he loved all of his children dearly, he didn’t much like any of them.

But what would it mean, I wonder, to claim that So-and-so WAS your favourite philosopher? On what basis? [The next bit of this article might seem like an irrelevant diversion. But actually it isn’t.]

In 1949 J.B. Priestley wrote Delight, a splendid book, still in print, and rightly so. The gist of the book is that no matter what horrors the world throws at us, there’s excitement and delight to be found in all manner of simple everyday things - for instance, the experience of unexpectedly meeting up with an old friend. Such a chance encounter is often nothing short of magical.

Continuing with this diversion - which really isn’t a diversion - long years ago, in a grim second-hand bookshop I enquired of the equally grim owner where one might find the philosophy books. He explained that they were in the section on Witchcraft and Magic! Words failed me. However, it occurred to me that the link between philosophy and magic was so much more integral than he imagined.

Drawing these threads together, I would suggest that your Favourite Philosopher, be it a thinker from the dim-and-distant or some contemporary luminary, will be nothing less than a Bringer of Magic. It works like this. A particular philosophical problem has been attracting your curiosity, rattling around in your head and refusing to go away. Then one day you happen to come across Philosopher X and, miracle of miracles, to your delight you find that they too are wrestling with the very same problem. There’s an immediate meeting of minds. Like a reunion of two old friends. Not necessarily sharing the same opinions, but sharing the exact same passion.

When that occurs, when you unexpectedly chance upon a soul mate, the Magic happens. You’ve found your Favourite Philosopher. And with any luck you’ll have found someone who’s devoted months, years, maybe an entire lifetime, to a consideration of this particular conundrum. Suddenly you’re in the best of all possible company. In the space of a few pages you could find yourself sharing time and ideas with an acknowledged authority on the subject, a scholar with maybe an international reputation, whose expertise and erudition will enrich your thinking on the problem, open up new avenues to explore, help you avoid errors, or even confirm that you’re on the

right lines. Meeting up with your new chum is a magical experience - and exciting.

For my money, the connection between philosophy and excitement is real. I used to suggest to students that if the philosophical topic they were studying failed to excite them, failed to stop them in their tracks, failed to expand their thinking, they should look elsewhere - while admitting, of course, that the fault may well lie with the students themselves, the material they were reading, or probably their tutor. A colleague, a distinguished philosopher of international repute, once told me that the ‘secret’ of successful philosophy teaching was to present students with ideas that would ‘pull the rug from under their feet’.

A recurring problem for me was to know which philosophical problems and which writers, suitable for absolute beginners, might well create the necessary rug-pulling. On many occasions the 17th century French thinker, Descartes, was the go-to thinker. For several reasons.

His books are mercifally short, readily available in translation, and his prose easy to read. [By the way, the ability to present ideas clearly is, believe me, something of a rarity amongst philosophers.] Also, the problem he sets out with - ‘Can I know ANYTHING for certain?’ - usually succeeds in starting the rug-pulling process. But perhaps most important of all, consideration of that single problem leads on to a whole raft of other complex and related issues, taking students on a journey from the seventeenth century to the present day and into the future.

So, is Descartes my Favourite Philosopher? No. Of course not! It’s a meaningless question and a meaningless answer, as pointless as asking someone if they believe in God. Such questions, and their answers, need to be systematically unpacked and clarified before anything meaningful can be said.

So, who’s your Favourite Philosopher? It has to be the one who, at any particular moment, brings The Magic into your thinking. You’ll know who it is. Philosopher-in-Residence

Descartes

Dear Broad Sheep

I feel obliged to respond to Mr. Pernickety’s piece in your June issue. Specifically, his unwarranted (and inaccurate) comments with respect to the Blood Bay in Ludlow, in which he disparages not only the owners, but also the clientele. This establishment was not ‘sold to a man from Gloucester’ as ‘Mr. P’ falsely asserts (Ludlow actually - formerly London, I believe), and changed hands in 2022, not ‘last year’ as stated (get the facts right, at least). Yes, it was the visionary idea of Jon Saxon that established this gem, together with The Dog Hangs Well in Corve Street (another jewel in Ludlow’s crown), but it is the current owners who, post-COVID, have saved it for the town, essentially unchanged, and prevented it being converted back to some anonymous shop selling trinkets to tourists, or fixing mobile phones.

I am unsure as to Mr. Pernickety’s qualifications as an ‘arbiter of taste’ when it comes to pubs (an evident fondness for Farrow and Ball in ‘subtle hues’ and ‘knick-knackery’ would appear to bring this somewhat into question), but on this occasion he is sorely mistaken. While possibly not everyone’s cup of tea, the Blood Bay is much loved by its regulars and tourists alike, and receives overwhelmingly positive reviews on Trip Adviser. Its regular beers are perhaps a little unadventurous, but are from a small, established independent brewery, are eminently quaffable and competitively priced. The current owners have put together a great team behind the bar, and the pub benefits from all the same positive attributes ‘Mr. P’ lists in praise of The Dog Hangs Well (no TV, no music, no phones) – I have to note that I have rarely, if ever, seen ‘Mr. P’ in either establishment. In a climate where, both nationally and locally, pubs are closing at an alarming rate, and Ludlow is blighted by a depressing number of empty commercial premises, I think Mr. Pernickety’s time would be better spent supporting local small businesses rather than sniping in print at something not to his personal ‘taste’.

I am sure that I am not alone in being enormously grateful to Clive and Denise for stepping in to save The Blood Bay for Ludlow (likewise Nick and Ed at the Dog); it is unfortunate that Broad Sheep has been used as a vehicle to discredit their admirable contribution to the town. Yours faithfully

A Blood Bay / Dog Hangs Well regular

Dear Broad Sheep

I was surprised to see the negative comments about the Blood Bay (p26, June edition).

This is a fine pub with a fine selection of beers and a very interesting cross section of customers. I can’t see how Mr Pernickety found anything to really criticise. The landlords have effectively saved a pub and have kept it much as it was under Jon Saxon. Yes the beers may be different but the beers are still good. Perhaps Mr Pernickety was a little under the weather when he visited. . . Regards

Mr Pernickety has responded to the above letters on the Food page, (page 26).

Dear Broad Sheep

The introduction to the piece by PetrusOnus on page 20 of the July issue - ‘Whole Lotta Lyin’ Goin’ On’ made a reasonable stab at involving Elvis, with pelvis, forelock and Colonel Tom - but poor old Petrus got it wrong. For sure, Elvis sang Shake Rattle and Roll, but it was Jerry Lee Lewis that knocked out Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On. Is Petrus really an ancient Roman? In which case perhaps we should forgive the poor old soul his memory lapse.

Best wishes,

Dear John,

Some might consider me a bit of a classic, but I’m not such an ancient Roman that I can’t type the words “Elvis” and “Lotta Shakin’” into Youtube search and hear a lively rendition of that foot-tapping classic by Elvis Presley, performed in a tacky Las Vegas casino. Naturally, I’m aware that the original was recorded by J Lee Lewis. But thank you for pointing that out for the benefit of other Broad Sheep readers.

The Clive, Bromfield

BEFORE starting this month’s review, Mr Pernickety must respond to critics whose comments can be found at the front of this issue, (page 7). Mr P attempts to address his thoughts on the places he visits to the broad spectrum of readers of the Woolly Organ. But one anonymous reader complains of his comments about the Blood Bay in Ludlow, questioning Mr P’s qualification to assess the region’s victuallers on the grounds of his vocabulary, when Mr Pernickety aspires only to add clarity and colour to his descriptions.

Mr P apologises, of course, for incorrectly reporting the precise date of the new ownership of the Blood Bay, and the birthplace of its new owner, but neither are germane to his views. Careful readers will recall that he described the pub as “a little, recreated Victorian gem” and “this charming little bar”, terms not intended or likely to discourage customers. He went on to make the point that an old-fashioned landlord, such a that of the Cross Keys, who fully engages with his clientele, has become a rarity which Mr P, as a committed devotee of the traditional British pub, regrets. Mr P’s regular readers know his function is to express an honest view from an entirely personal perspective; they are, as he is, believers in the freedom to speak. He has no doubt, and sincerely hopes that there are many, like his anonymous critic, who enjoy the beer from Gloucester at the Blood Bay, and are content to discuss the footie, the weather or the price of diesel while they drink it. But Mr P prefers great local ales that reflect the character of the Marches, accompanied by creative, well-informed debate on more complex issues.

He wasn’t aware that he was in any way disparaging about the Well Hung Dog, where he has enjoyed many stimulating discussions.

A few miles north of the Dog, a fi ne historic 18th century roadhouse offers a pleasing example of 21st century service and cuisine.

The Clive Arms, a substantial, four square red-brick edifice, sits in front of a cluster of buildings including the Ludlow Farmshop, its café-restaurant, the Ludlow Kitchen and the Ludlow Distillery which sells its own burgeoning brand of Wardington’s Ludlow Gin (and whisky, vodka and rum).

The Clive underwent a comprehensive re-ordering a few years ago, making good use of all the ground floor space. The restaurant is stylish and unexpectedly chic for rural South Salop, uncluttered and well-lit. Inside the front door and to the right is a comfortable, relaxing drawing-room bar, where Mr P sometimes enjoys grumbling at the Sunday papers with his Lovely Companion and a gin & tonic. The main bar is marred, in Mr P’s view, by the presence of elevated tables and stools like a Soho coffee joint, but there is comfortable seating in the characterful lower bar. Throughout the building, the Noble Grocer, who started the Ludlow farm shop in 2007, and whose family run the Clive Arms, has drawn on his own fine collection to hang several outstanding pictures on the walls., including some by the

The farm shop is on hand to supply many of the ingredients which the chef at the Clive can use, especially from the butchery and green grocery which are stocked directly from the surrounding acres. Mr Pernickety and his lovely companion arrived to find a large crowd gathered in the lower bar to watch England’s footballers playing the Dutch. Luckily not much of the ensuing racket penetrated to the corner of the dining room where he and the LC were comfortably installed.

Inspecting the menu, they were struck by the variety on offer – a sign of an adventurous and, it had to be hoped, competent chef. The starters confirmed that he hadn’t over-reached himself. The LC’s Heritage Tomato salad, broad bean hummus with fresh leaves and olive tapenade provided a variety of tastes and textures which she ate with pleasure, while Mr P had a good chunk of smoked lamb shoulder with BBQ sauce Chipotle mayo and apple and dill coleslaw - a festival of flavours which made a promising start to their dinner.

They had a glass of excellent dry Chilean Chardonnay, which Mr P supplemented with a glass of his favourite grape, Primitivo from Puglia. The LC asked for a dish of chicken breast with tarragon sauce, and smacked her lovely lips as she declared it al dente and succulent. Mr P, feeling adventurous, took a punt on the chef’s version of an Indian dish: Tandoori Cod Fillet with lentil and spinach daal, a crunchy broccoli and onion bhaji, mint and yoghurt – a risk he soon decided was worth taking. He and his companion were enjoying the food and the ambience so much they chose to have two puddings instead of sharing one, as they often do. The LC was delighted with her sticky toffee pudding, which she found light and digestible, while Mr P can still recall the subtle sweetness and flavour of his Baked Raspberry Cheesecake and ice-cream.

When they’d finished dinner, they followed the racket and joined the hoi polloi just in time to see Mr Ollie Watkins ping the ball into the Dutch net – undoubtedly the best moment of the game.

They drove home, replete and happy.

Climate Policy Ruination - Sunak’s role in boosting global warming

IMUST apologise in advance. The normal high standard of my flowing prose may be marred by events beyond my control. Writing in early July, if my thoughts seem disjointed or my arguments incoherent, I can only blame the programme planners, or schedulers, as their minions are called.

Although I spent some decades frequenting BBC buildings, I am not sure that I ever met a programme planner. In fact, BBC programmes are not planned and scheduled by actual people.

They are conjured up by dark forces, lurking somewhere the recesses of Broadcasting House. However these inanimate entities are controlled, they have joined together, in an effort to subvert my journalistic efforts.

Our dashing young tennis ace, Emma Raducanu, more or less confessed that she and the gymnastic footballer, Jude Bellingham, had plotted together to derail our sporting expectations. Whoever is at fault, it has been hard to find five minutes to assemble my thoughts – what with VAR checks, action replays and top British talent on centre court.

But, finally, I have found a spare few minutes, after midnight, when sports presenters and producers are presumably tucked up, or are mentally preparing for another day of breathless commentary.

My intention this month was to review the environmental achievements of the UK’s most recent prime minister. He was fairly forgettable, but I will just help you…it was Rishi Sunak. Already he is a mere a footnote in history.

But his record should not be ignored or forgotten. It should remain in our thoughts as a reminder of what can happen when a Downing Street occupant sets out to trash the environment and reverse positive steps taken by some earlier governments.

When Greenpeace attempted, in an online summary, to review the Tories’ performance on the environment and climate, it spoke of 10 major Conservative policy blunders.

It listed everything from filthy rivers to last autumn’s failed auction for offshore wind farms. In case you missed it at the time, the sale failed because of a total lack of bidders. Which can only be seen as government incompetence on a massive scale.

But the use by Greenpeace of the word “blunders” was surely an error. All the damage done to Britain’s climate performance by the last resident of Downing Street was surely quite deliberate. One should speak of a blunder only when it is something done by mistake.

Where to start? Last autumn Sunak made a speech listing various measures he planned, to throw into reverse the UK’s progress in trying to curb climate change. The speech was notable for giving a grotesquely false picture of the environmental achievements of previous governments.

For instance, he wrongly claimed that some homes would “never ever be suitable for a heat pump”. Putting the wretched grammatical howler, “never ever…” on one side, government fieldwork concludes that, “There is no property type…that is unsuitable for a heat pump…”, according to one climate campaign group.

At the same time the respected daily climate newsletter, Carbon Brief, calculates that, over the last decade, energy bills have been £10 billion higher than they would have been if climate policies, such as energy efficiency support, had not been scrapped by recent Tory governments.

Why did Sunak make his dramatic policy lurch? The climate campaign group, DeSmog, says that the Tory party has in recent times been given £8.4 million by bodies which deny man-made climate change.

And if, in future, conservatives do any deal with the party led by Nigel Farage, they will be gaining even further from climate denialism, since Reform UK is said to get over 90% of its funds from such sources.

A good friend tells me I am in danger of being lighthearted about political actions that will tend to trash the planet. That was not my intention. I was only trying to aim some sharp darts of satire at the recently departed Tory prime minister. But my friend is right.

The actions of Rishi Sunak, in reversing long standing UK environment policies, deserve only the most severe censure. And these U-turns, in an area voters care about deeply, may well help to explain why the Tories have now been thrown out of power so dramatically.
