LTHOUGH I am not a bona fide fortune teller I am prepared to make a prediction for 2024. Given the astonishing success of the recent docudrama, ‘Mr Bates Vs the Post Office’, in getting the relevant authorities to act on stuff that was common knowledge 10 years ago, I predict that we are in for a flood of campaigning dramas. Anyone who has been banging their head against a brick wall of injustice is bound to go ‘Oh now I see how it’s done’ and be straight on the phone to James Strong (the director). In fact now might be a good time to start our own docudrama TV channel possibly called Shocking Sheep TV. Meanwhile in my real world and in order to fill those dreary days before and after New Year and to counteract the lousy cycling weather, I have been attempting to watch every single bike travel documentary I could find on Netflix, iPlayer and the rest. I know you are fed up with my cycling stories but stay with me for a minute ‘cos I’ve found some corking films that EVEN you might enjoy. As you can imagine various people have been filmed crossing Europe, crossing Asia, crossing Australia etc. However the place they cross most is America. East to West, West to East, North to South and South to North and sometimes over the Panama canal and right down to the tip of Argentina. The cyclists are very often German and the one thing they all agree on is that the worst bit of it all is the 400ml Dalton Way in Alaska – cold, wet, bad roads, no cafes , no shops, no people, massive trucks lumbering past and mosquitoes. After watching 20 or more of these films I came across the Daddy of them all. Meet - Heinz Stüke ‘The Man Who Wanted to See It All’ on Netflix. In 1960, only 20 years old, Heinz left his hometown Hövelhof with only a few dollars in his pocket. He cycled from Germany, from there through Turkey and Iran into Baluchistan in Pakistan, Young and off entered India through the to see the world Punjab, cycled through India to Sri Lanka. He stayed in Sri Lanka for a while until he found a cargo boat to Vietnam. He got a job on a banana boat and sailed three times from Vietnam to Russia and back. Every time he tried to enter Russia, he was denied entry. The third time he was successful, left the cargo boat and traveled through Russia on his bike. From there he cycled to Finland and to the North Cape Norway before going back to Hövelhof. The whole trip took him a year and he cycled 17,000km. Then in November 1962 Heinz left his hometown Hövelhof on a 3-speed bike with only 300 bucks in his pocket. The goal was to see the Olympics 1964 in Tokyo. His plan was to cycle through Africa, then take a ship to South America and then further on to Japan but this time he never came back. Over the next 50 years Heinz and his bike visited every country in the world only eventually returning to Hovelhof in 2010. Between 1962 and 2010, he cycled more than 378,000 miles, and visited 195 countries. The Guinness Book of Records described him as having travelled more widely by bicycle than anyone in history.

In Haiti he was chased by an angry mob. In Egypt he was beaten unconscious by soldiers. In the United States he was abandoned by Heinz 378,000 miles later a car driver who offered him a ride and then stole all his supplies. In Mozambique, 1995, he was attacked by bees while bathing in a river. In Siberia, 1997, his bicycle was stolen for the fifth time, along with his luggage. In England, (shame on you) 2006, his bicycle—the same machine he rode from Hövelhof in 1962—was stolen again, this time from his campsite in Portsmouth. These days Heinz lives happily back in his hometown and cyclists are very welcome at his house and if you bring a tent you can stay overnight in his garden. Should you want to visit you should call him first: 0049 5257 9809877. My other 2 hot tips are films I thought were going to be documentaries but turned out to be intriguing, dramatic, feature films. Dhak Dhak – 4 women on motorbikes ride from New Delhi to Ladahk. Feminist, Bollywood meets biker, movie. Ventoux - four friends meet up after 30 years to repeat their cycling ascent of the famous Ventoux mountain with added sex and death. Happy trails! philosophy Assertiveness - A Guided Tour

I

T was nothing short of a masterclass. Mrs P could have sold tickets. She and her companion Dr B, both in their seventies, were enjoying their evening meal in the elegant dining room of a South Wales hotel. Three tables away sat a group of younger women, their conversation getting louder, cruder and more intrusive by the minute. Mrs P could stand it no longer. She got up, walked over to the offending women, stood in front of them, waited until she had their undivided attention, then, without raising her voice or showing the slightest sense of anger, asked a question: ‘Don’t you think you might be better in a zoo?’ She returned to her table, after which the women gave every impression of being a group of Trappists on a night out. Another masterclass: Ludlow Post Office on a busy Saturday morning on the run up to Christmas some years ago. Long queues at all the windows. Through the door strides a middle-aged lady, attired head to foot in tweeds, complete with the mandatory hat with its long feather.

Although there is no sign of a twelve-bore shotgun, she is probably off to a jolly afternoon’s pheasant shooting. She has the bearing of a woman you would be ill advised to tangle with. A retired brigadier perhaps? Ignoring the queues she marches up to a cashier. Nobody speaks, but murderous thoughts fill the air. A man approaches the brigadier. ‘Perhaps I can help you.’ Then, pointing to his waiting comrades explains, ‘These, madam, are what we call queues. Are you maybe unfamiliar with how they work?’ Like Mrs P, this hero never once raised his voice, never revealed the slightest trace of anger, remained the very soul of politeness, albeit armed with withering sarcasm. Only people blessed with enviable poise and self-confidence can bring this off. The woman, without speaking a word, joins the end of the queue. The silent applause is deafening. Nor is assertiveness the monopoly of old age, as this next episode shows, also in Ludlow, this time in a Chinese restaurant on a busy Saturday night one December. A boy of twelve or thirteen comes in. He has that aura of someone more than able to take care of himself. After speaking to a waiter, he begins to regale the company with a medley of Christmas carols. Not always sure of the words, he is even less sure of the tunes. But nothing ventured nothing gained.

6

Once this mini-maestro has completed his repertoire he approaches each table of diners. No words are exchanged. Words are not necessary. After all, he isn’t asking for a scholarly appraisal of his performance - the cash would do, thank you very much. Every table

obliges, putting money into his cap, clearly enjoying the lad’s bravado in the relaxed atmosphere of the evening. But the best is yet to come. Oh yes. Having collected his earnings, he sits down at an empty table, summons a waiter and orders a meal. Meanwhile, an attempt on my part to be more assertive was an abysmal failure. I used to frequent a well-known cake shop. The owner, a tiresome specimen, always made fun of my family name. Always the same tired joke, it irritated me no end. Time to get a grip. Time to be - yes, more assertive. So in readiness for the next visit I worked out precisely what my reply would be: ‘It’s a good job your cakes are a lot fresher than your jokes.’ Surely that would do the trick? I practised it over and over until word-perfect. Unfortunately, overcome by nerves, at the next visit I heard myself say to the wretched woman, ‘It’s a good job your jokes are a lot fresher than your cakes.’ To the best of my knowledge, that was my first, and last, attempt at being more assertive. Assertiveness can take us in many directions. It can initiate miracles, be life-affirming, maybe even help someone mend their ways. But it can also create pure mayhem. To be assertive and at the same time bullying and self-important is all too easy. But to be assertive and at the same time compassionate and constructive - that’s a very different kettle of fish. The right balance is elusive. A university colleague, a distinguished psychologist, used to run assertiveness-training courses. They were much in demand. I asked if I might join one of them, being intrigued to discover how assertiveness could actually be taught. They say actions speak louder than words: he became so convulsed with uncontrollable laughter he was unable to utter a single word. Of course I wanted to know the reason for his amusement, but couldn’t ask. Just not sufficiently assertive. Philosopher-in-Residence

CONQUEST, BROMYARD

Following his whacko historical drama THE FAVOURITE, the mischievous Greek director, Yorgos Lanthimos again delves back in time, here to Victorian London where mad scientist Goodwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe, reliably eccentric) animates the corpse of a young woman, Bella (Emma Stone, also in THE FAVOURITE and never better), by inserting the mind of a child curious to discover what the world has to offer. Then along comes immoral cad, Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) who after introducing her to wild sex as they whirl around Europe, plans to unceremoniously dump her. Needless to say in a film which Lanthimos and his scripter Alisdair Gray offer the odd nod to Candide, Frankenstein and Monty Python, things do not go according to plan as Bella wears out Duncan and Goodwin accedes control to his creation. As well as hilarity and endless plot twists, the film is a riot of idiosyncratic production design, rich colours… and some decidedly weird animals. All reviews by Mark Williams

The actual Priscilla Presley co-produced and provided the original memoir on which director/co-writer Sofia Coppola has delivered a thoughtful and revealing film which begins with the King of Rock’n’Roll (Jacob Elordy, SALTBURN) whilst on national service in Germany meeting, courting and soon marrying the lonely, 14 year-old Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny, T.V’s MARE OF EASTTOWN’s Erin). For her, it begins as a fairy tale but once ensconced in Graceland she remains lonely and isolated whilst also subject to his control and demands – from how she should dress, do her hair and apply tons of make-up to, well, pretty much everything. Coppola, who has a reputation for subtle portrayals of vulnerable and conflicted women, including her Oscar-nominated LOST IN TRANSLATION, and 2006’s MARIE ANTOINETTE, is a little coy regarding the couple’s much speculated upon sex life and the film is as much an exploration of Priscilla’s discomforted and increasingly rebellious character as, rather tellingly, it is of Elvis’s. 8 Feb INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (12A) Leintwardine Community Centre 07572 442903 10 Feb THE GREAT ESCAPER (12A) Callow End VH 01905 830469 10 Feb LIVING (12A) Yarpole Parish Hall 01568 780250 10 Feb BROOKLYN (12A) Bayston Hill Memorial Hall 01743 872096 13 Feb RYE LANE (12A) Garway Hall 01600 750465 13 Feb PAW PATROL THE MIGHTY MOVIE (PG) Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, Craven Arms 01588 676060 13 Feb OPPENHEIMER (12) Acton Scott VH 01694 781260 13 Feb LUNANA - A YAK IN THE CLASSROOM (PG) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross on Wye 07789 778048 14 Feb BARBIE (12) Hope Bowdler VH 01694 721376 15 Feb THE GREAT ESCAPER (12A) Gorsley VH 01989 750649 15 Feb THE GREAT ESCAPER (12A) Kinnerley Parish Hall 01691 683619 15 Feb DREAM HORSE (PG) Pudleston VH 01568 750303

food Old Hall Persian, Dorrington

M

24

R PERNICKETY has driven north and south on the A49 through the village of Dorrington countless times, frequently in a state of fidgeting frustration behind a tractor towing a cartload of dung at 28 miles an hour, thoughtlessly ignoring a tail of motors behind. The most notable features of this highway-dominated village are Mr Sadd the Butcher, more notable for his curious name than his butchery; Erozone, purveyor of erotic underwear, and the Old Hall Persian Restaurant – an unlikely ancient timber framed structure to be housing a restaurant serving unfamiliar middle eastern food. If only for this bizarre apparent mismatch, Mr P had not hitherto felt curious about this restaurant; thus can ignorance and prejudice deprive a man of new, engaging experiences. This admittedly unjustifiable prejudice was heightened by perceptions about the unattractive political theocracy that has ruled Iran, formerly Persia, since 1979, when the authoritarian and unpopular Shah was deposed by an even worse regime of bigoted Mullahs. Luckily for Mr P, a friend (oh yes, he does have one, despite his opiniated reviews) had suggested that he should try it. He and his Lovely Companion canvassed the support of a couple of fussy foodies who had last joined them at the Cattle Shed in Penrhos Court, and were naturally a little wary. As ever with open minds, though, they set off to see what Old Hall Persian had to offer. Arriving, it was bizarre to walk in through the front door of an quintessentially traditional English dwelling and into a dining room draped in exotic eastern wall hangings, rugs and lights of oriental design, along with the aroma of the region’s spices to a background of Persian music. At a table by a mercifully blazing wood-burner on a frosty evening, they sat and read the menus they’d been handed. At that point in the evening, none of them was aware that they were about to experience an ancient food tradition, with origins dating back six millennia. From an intriguing menu, for their first course Mr P’s party ordered a selection of starters, or Mazeh, in small dishes containing a selection of several, among them: Murgh Kabab, juicy cubes of chicken breast marinated in grated onion, garlic, cumin, cinnamon, olive oil and lemon, then cooked in a clay oven on a skewer. Or Mahi Biryan, chunks of river cobbler (a freshwater fish found in Iran) deep fried in tempura batter with onion and carom seeds. These were served with a distinctively light and airy flatbread. One of the joys of eating from a variety of ethnic traditions can be the sudden discovery of unexpected and entirely new tastes or combinations of flavours, and at this restaurant, Mr P discerned that he was going to experience many of them. In this diverse and sophisticated cuisine, spices from saffron, dried Lime, julienned ginger to turmeric, fenugreek and mace, and dozens more between, contribute to the aromatic flavours. The inventiveness of traditional dishes and the chef’s individual take on them did indeed produce many tastes that were excitingly new to Mr P and his party. For a main course, Mr Pernickety chose Ghormeh Sabzi, considered a Persian national dish by some, it was based on chunks of good quality lamb slowly cooked with green herbs,

red kidney and rose coco beans, spinach, onion, fenugreek, parsley and sundried limes. Like most of the dishes on the menu this could have been served for vegetarians without meat or any loss of flavour. With it, he scoffed some good, freshy baked naan. Another of the party ordered Fesenjam, a stew of boneless chicken breast cooked with onion, tomato in pomegranate juice and olive oil which he enjoyed, describing ‘an interesting use of spices that made it a distinct and welcome change from the usual, rather samey Indian/Bangladeshi meals.’ The LC, in vegetarian mode that evening, chose Spicy Red and White Braised lentils, cooked with fried onions, tomatoes, smashed cumin, lime juice and turmeric which evoked an enthusiastic response from her. After this feast, desserts were little disappointing. Mr P and the LC shared a bowl of Halva, which they failed to finish, concluding that it was one of those dishes that have to be eaten since childhood to be appreciated. The others had Sheer Khurma, made with fine vermicelli, plain whole milk, honey, dates, shattered pistachios and almonds. Delicious as it sounds, they felt that it didn’t live up to the description in the menu. Perhaps other desserts on offer would have suited them better. The restaurant has a surprisingly extensive list of wines, most from the new world, with some good French bottles and some, more adventurously, from India and the Beekar Valley in Lebanon. Mr P’s party enjoyed the house wine, an Argentinian Shiraz at a reasonable price. The party was delighted when the woman who had served them so diligently explained that she was the wife of the chef/owner, Dr Syed Ijlal Haider (MB BS, MBA HPN Keele, FRCS Ed.), a surgeon and senior consultant with the NHS who enjoyed moonlighting as chef in his own restaurant simply to indulge his fascination for his native cuisine. They could sense that the food had been prepared with dedication and a passion for the vast palette of spices he uses. Despite a few perceived shortcomings in the decoration of the place and a view that the dishes of starters could have been a little larger, Mr Pernickety can fulsomely recommend Old Hall Persian, for a memorable dining experience, unique in Shropshire, and he hopes that Dr Ijlal continues to wield his chef’s Sabatier as well as his surgeon’s knife for years to come. Mr Pernickety

grass roots Old, Decrepit and Overstretched Britain’s nuclear submarines

A

ROUND the end of last year, you may have seen a report about a close shave endured by the crew of a navy warship. The vessel was one of four British submarines armed with nuclear weapons. It was carrying out a planned dive when its main depth gauge failed.

HMS Vanguard

Reports say the crew did not know their actual depth. And the sub came close to reaching a point where the vessel would have been crushed and destroyed. Luckily, someone on board finally noticed, and a back-up depth gauge was checked just in time. Some readers may be indifferent about the efficiency of the UK’s most destructive weapons systems. But I imagine most of us would be alarmed by the thought of a vessel, with a crew of 130 servicemen and women, and armed with nuclear warheads, breaking up and disintegrating deep below sea level - whether close to Britain or far out in the ocean. It doesn’t bear thinking about. The Ministry of Defence suggests there is always a nuclear-armed submarine on patrol somewhere, with a second at base and ready to go to sea. The subs are called Vanguard, Vigilant, Vengeance, and Victorious. And then there is Vigil. Whoops, no! I imagined that last bit. Sometimes my creative instincts take over. Vigil is the sub at the centre of a BBC television drama. In its first series, a police detective, played by Suranne Jones, is sent aboard, to crack a plot in which the vessel’s chef has been planning, with Russian contacts, to do something dire. For added spice, Suranne’s character is in a lesbian relationship with a shore-based woman in a camouflage top. Well, a girl surely deserves a bit of fun during her shore leave! Especially leave after spending months at sea, saving British democracy from Putin and his evil spooks. But back to the real submarine service! In recent times, duty rotas and manpower have become stretched almost to breaking point. Online navy watchers have noted that crews, who used to expect tours of duty of around three months, may now face half a year or more at a time beneath the waves. A former submarine commander has raised the alarm about such pressures. Retired commander Robert Forsyth writes about the mental stress submariners will suffer when they must routinely work for such long periods away from home and family. Commander Forsyth cites the risk of anti-social behaviour, loss of control, boredom, complacency, and a drop-off in standards. He says, “…it is hard to establish the human cost and associated risks of abnormal behaviour, unless an incident draws attention to it – by which time, of course, it will be too late.”

It is said that direct approaches to the Ministry of Defence about nuclear submarine operations are routinely

blocked. But I found an internet piece that seemed wellsourced and gave some detail. It came from a publication called Tortoise, co-founded by a former editor of The Times. The article is headlined “All at sea – UK’s nuclear submarines.” It recounts how one of Britain’s four nucleararmed submarines returned to its home port of Faslane in September, after 196 days at sea. Tortoise says that, while the average patrol length for these subs used to be around three months, it is routine now for them to last five months or more. One reason for the growing length of these patrols is that the navy has been scraping by with only three or sometimes only two fully operational deterrent submarines. Part of this overstretch may relate to a severe overrun in a refit carried out on one of the four subs. Some time ago HMS Vanguard was taken out of service for what was planned to be three years. But the maintenance and repair work went on for twice as long as expected – all of seven years. Another of the navy’s nuclear deterrent subs reportedly suffered a fire in 2022. It went into the Devonport dockyard at Plymouth last year and is still there, as far as is known. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament claims there have been other submarine incidents where there was a risk to human lives. It asserts the subs, far from defending us, put us at higher risk of nuclear war and that “… it is time to get rid of them once and for all.” Tortoise says that three of the UK’s four nuclear armed subs are now beyond their planned retirement dates. In November, the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Ben Key, told the commons defence committee that the pressure of long deployments for submarine crews kept him awake at night. How concerning is all this? Tortoise quotes an expert at Chatham House, the international affairs think tank. Marion Messmer, a senior research fellow, says, “I think the longer the patrols get, the higher the psychological stress…and, I think, the higher the risk that something could go wrong.” Julian O’Halloran
